Do you get bored during the summer holidays? Summer Mix 2014 offers over 100 courses (many are new this year!) with more than 3,000 places available for young people to sign up to.

Summer Mix 2014 is:  completely free!  open to young people living in Plymouth (your home address must receive services from Plymouth City Council)  for young people aged 11 to 19 years - some courses are available for those aged up to 25 years if disabled or with an additional need  allocated on a first come, first served basis  initially open for young people to book up to 3 courses  after 23rd July you can book as many places as are available  available to sign up to online at www.summermix.co.uk  organised by Plymouth City Council Youth Services and funded in partnership with local organisations This booklet provides information about the courses available including dates, times, age ranges, locations and accessibility. You’ll get the opportunity to learn about the world of architecture in a REAL hands on way under the guidance of a trained architect! As you will be based at Devonport Guildhall you will have the opportunity to view Plymouth’s architecture from the top of the recently renovated Devonport Column. AN INTRODUCTION TO STABLE MANAGEMENT AND HORSE WELFARE WOW02

Age range 11- 25 What a way to see if you really enjoy horse care and horse riding! Here is the opportunity to work with a pony for a day. Learn about how to care for the pony, learn about stable management, looking after equipment, how to ride a pony safely and most importantly, HAVE FUN! Set in Bickleigh village on the edge of Dartmoor and Maristow Forestry, RNRMRS Bickleigh offers young people the chance to do all of these things on a friendly, safe, established yard. Experienced staff will guide you in the every day running of a stable and caring for a horse.You are guaranteed a fun, exciting and memorable experience! Once you have a place confirmed you must phone or email Bickleigh straight away with details of your name, height and weight. The weight limit for this course is 12 stone, with one pony able to carry up to 14 stone.You can also contact them if you have a query about your riding ability, This course is suitable for beginners. BUG HUNT AND POND DIPPING SAFARI WOW04 Age Range

11 - 25

Take part in a fun undergrowth and pond safari in the beautiful surroundings of Antony House Estate. A ranger will guide you around and you will discover a range of pond and insect life, as well as learning how to record them.You will need to bring any food and drink with you, sun screen, clothes and footwear suitable for the weather and outdoor activities. The safari times are 12-3 plus travel time on the minibus. Free minibus transport is provided from Plymouth, leaving Rees Youth Centre, Mudge Way, Plympton PL7 2PS at 11.30am and returning to Rees Youth Centre for 3.30pm. Dates:

Age Range: 11-13 Welcome to Bikeability - ‘cycling proficiency’ for the 21st Century! If you’re thinking about getting on your bike, why not complete your Bikeability? It’s fun and gives you the skills and confidence to cycle in modern road conditions. During Level 2 Bikeability training you will get out on the roads! Level 2 gives you a real cycling experience, so that you are able to deal with traffic on short journeys such as cycling to school. During Bikeability Level 3 training you will learn the skills to tackle a wider variety of traffic conditions than on Level 2. When you reach Level 3 standard you will be able to deal with all types of road conditions and more challenging traffic situations. The course covers dealing with hazards, making ‘on-the-move’ risk assessments and planning routes for safer cycling. Dress suitably for riding a bike, and bring drinks and a packed lunch. BIO-BLITZ: DISCOVER PLYMOUTH’S WILD SIDE! SL10

Age range Course One 11 - 15 Course Two 16 - 25 This course is ideal for budding scientists and natural history enthusiasts (perhaps the future Chris Packham or Michaela Strachan!). If you like being outside, hunting for bugs and spotting wildlife, then this is the course for you. The Plymouth Woodland Project, run by the School of Biological Sciences at Plymouth University, will be hosting this fun day-course at Radford Woods, with a chance to learn from real scientists and discover some interesting creatures and plants living right on your doorstep. Course activities will include a woodland bug hunt, where you will learn to identify different invertebrates whilst helping with real research to uncover what bugs live in urban woodlands.You will also get to take part in the Plymouth Plant Trail, check our overnight live mammal traps, and of course go pond-dipping to find newts, dragonfly larvae and search for the elusive water spider! BUILD YOUR OWN CHAIR USING RECYCLED MATERIALS SL11

Age Range 11-25 Over the course of a day you will get the opportunity to convert a standard wooden pallet into a chair. This course gives you hands on experience of woodworking and working with tools.You will be guided through the construction process by Diggin’ It staff, so don’t worry if you haven’t got any experience, enthusiasm is all you need! At the end of the day you should have a pallet chair which you can either take home or donate to a local Youth Centre. COMPUTERS INSIDE OUT SL14 Age Range: 14-25 Log on with us to discover exactly what’s inside your computer. This is a practical session in which you will build a computer and then get two or more computers ‘talking’ to each other. On this course the rule is ‘Have a Go’. If you are fascinated by technology or have ever thought of working in the computer hardware industry then you should come along and upgrade your skills. Discover Dartmoor through exploration and navigate your way across ancient historical landmarks in search of hidden letterboxes and geo-caches. This fun one day course will teach you basic map reading and compass skills to safely navigate your team across the moorland. DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD EXPERIENCE WITH CAMPING, SURVIVAL AND EXPLORING SKILLS SL18

Age range 13 to 19 Come for a two day, one night camp and learn from experienced people how to: cook outdoors, explore wilder places using a map and compass on a route you planned yourself; put up a tent and make a camp; meet new friends and become a team.You may also use this to start on the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Plymouth and can count it as your practice expedition (there are chances to do your qualifying expedition at the end of the summer, if you choose to sign up to do your Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award). Day one will start with a tour of the Aquarium with one of our marine experts – there may even be a chance to see some sharks having their breakfast! Do you enjoy making things? Join us at Plymouth Arts Centre for 2 days of creative construction. Let your imagination run wild and transform our art studio into a fantastic new world. Working with two experienced sculptors you will be using large scale and unusual materials to build the magical town of your dreams. On 21 August Plymouth Arts Centre will be hosting the Art Party and the Perfect World created during Summer Mix will be open to the public. Friends and family can attend the party and see what the participants have achieved. Plymouth Arts Centre is running the nationally recognised Arts Award this year and you can use your experience and outcomes of Perfect World towards arts award. Learn how to use paints and other mediums to achieve simple but stunning designs onto pottery. We will be using stamps, stencils, lace and yarn to decorate and you will be guaranteed to produce a beautiful piece of pottery, even if you are not very ‘arty’. If you are looking for something fun and artistic then give it a go, step by step instructions will be given.Your plate will be fired after you have decorated it, and you will be able to collect it a few days later from Clayart to take home and keep. Remember to bring a snack and drink for the break Dates

On this course you will be introduced to the concept of customising and up-cycling, looking at designers who have done this successfully to create fashion collections.You will look at different fabric manipulation techniques used and experiment with ones you think you would like to explore for use in your own garment. Once you have refined your technique you will be able to customise a garment, ending with a successful, wearable item. This course allows you a lot of creative freedom, and gives you the time, facilities and support to create something individual and exciting that you can show in your future portfolio as well as wear.
