St. John’s Art Centre Project Location

St. John Catholic church is in the heart of Korogocho, one of the largest slum neighborhoods of Nairobi, Kenya.

3

The catholic Church was established by Father Alex Zanotelli to provide a place of worship for the catholic faithful of Korogocho.

1 7 6

Besides being a place of worship, St. John is also a community centre that has organically evolved to a hub for local NGOs, that serve and provide for the underprivileged people of Korogocho.

Most structures don’t provide enough space for all its users, especially on the weekends when it is at its busiest, where both the local NGO’s and the church is active.

Kenya

The St. John Catholic Church is a place for the community, and every inch is occupied by someone whether it is the local NGO’s, the youth, the elders, the religious or the once that need space for refuge government. The effort that is put into developing youth and the community in large by St. John Catholic Church and the local NGO’s is admirable, especially with the limited resources and space they have.

Amphitheatre functions as: -The church on Sundays where more than thousands of people attend the religious ceremony -Art of Music Foundation uses the space for rehearsals and performance. They have on the weekends both Saturday and Sunday. -St. John Sports Society also uses the Amphitheatre for sports activities and events such as Boxing and karate tournament. -The Korogocho community uses the space for community-based functions as they have the meetings and such.

-The Office of Pastor -Father Andrew. -Office and rehearsal space for The Art of Music Foundation (AOMF), local NGO founded by Elizabeth Njoroge. The NGO aims to use art music to change lives and inspire the youth of Korogocho to transform themselves and their society. AOMF also teaches dance both ballet and hip hop. -St. John Sports Society (SSS) that arranges ten different sport disciplines for the youth of Korogocho both boys and girls to avert criminality, alcoholism and drugs abuse. -St. John Justice centre who serve the community with juristic matters.

Approach

The proposal aims at extending the prorams on site onto the derelict quarry site bordering the Nairobi river. This is a sustainable approach in reclamation of the derelict land, furthermore, the construction techniques implemented will target to grow technical skills in the use of recycled materials (from the neighbouring dumpsite) in construction. These will further improve awareness on sustainable techniques.

The design intervention therefore proposes to take this into consideration using easy to assemble and modular structures in housing the relevant programs. THE MODULAR Modularity The construction system is modular, easily erected and dismountable. It allows for easy expansion with time if more resources are allocated, but also facilitates eventual replication to the various locations highlighted on site. Façade elements are modular and easily exchangeable, allowing for re-use of the panel solutions, to any configuration.

The Program

Systems The structural system is based on the 12 foot container making it easy to assemble infill systems (planes). This also allows for a large open plan system without columns, with flexible distribution of spaces over time
