ENTRANCE HALL 8 Queen’s Gate place is a beautiful Victorian townhouse that sits in the heart of one of London’s most exclusive areas; and it’s only right that it’s interior should reflect that. With an entrance hall that connects the top five flats via stairs and an elevator, it should offer a chic escape from the outside world but still with a grand sense of arrival. Moreover it should feel like a bright and airy space, with its exceptionally high ceilings, and the light should bounce off the floors and mirror to create a sense of ease and serenity.

The general styling should feel effortlessly luxurious with a kind of understated opulence. This can be achieved through carefully selected materials and wall colours, lifted with stylish accents and small decorative accessories. Features such as the meter cupboards should blend seamlessly into the scheme through use of decorative panelling and the area should be easy to maintain and keep tidy so as to serve as a functional space as well as a beautiful one.

Marble effect tiles in a chequered pattern on the floors. These should preferably be large-format tiles to give a grand Victorian feel to the space. There could be hints of black throughout other elements of the hallway to tie it all together. Nickel, chrome or gold materials could mix well with the black & white, especially in items such as mirrors or table lamps, with a warmer colour on the walls to breath a homely feel into the scheme.

Champagne or taupe coloured runners would compliment the black & white flooring well to add some warmth and a welcoming feel to the scheme. The initial 5 steps as you enter the property should could be painted plain white or black & white as shown in the image to the left. This would add some richness to the space and complement the champagne colour further.

Finally, Victorian style panelling will tie the whole scheme together and highlight the vast amount of volume in the space, drawing the eye up to the ornate original coving. The drawings show the proposed spacing of the panelling, which wraps around doors and up the stairs to further floors. Plaster wall lights painted the same colour as the walls are spaced evenly between the panels creating interesting geometries on the walls, and the panelling continues over the meter cupboards to disguise and blend them with the rest of the walls.
