WELCOME from Gardner Barrier

Dear Furies,

Welcome to the 2024 issue of Amidst the Trees, the magazine of Forsyth Country Day School and the 20232024 Impact Report!

What was the one thing that made or is making your experience at Forsyth Country Day life-changing? For hundreds of students each year (going back almost to the school’s beginning, though in smaller numbers), the answer has been the Johnson Academic Center. Whether students have diagnosed learning differences or they just need a little help with organizational skills and executive functioning, the Johnson Academic Center can change the game. In Unleashing Potential: The Johnson Academic Center on page 6, three alumni share their stories of transformation and success.

On page 18, we celebrate the retirement of an FCDS legend: Joe Trotter, founding teacher of the FCDS Engineering Program and an inspiration to many a successful engineer and human being. Read more about Joe’s impact in Not Your Average Joe

Last fall, the Class of 1974 celebrated its 50th reunion—the first 50th reunion to be celebrated in Forsyth Country Day School history. To have a class reunite after 50 years with the majority of its members attending is a testament to the closeness of the class, and to how special the relationships we build at FCDS are—even many years after graduation. Read their story on page 20.

Finally, we bring you up to date on Campus News on page 10, catch up with old friends in Class Notes starting on page 22, and remember the Furies we lost in In Memory beginning on page 26. We celebrate the Class of 2024 starting on page 28, and you’ll find the Impact Report— which celebrates your generosity and our successful Campaign for Forsyth.

Take care and Go Furies!

UNLEASHING

The Johnson Academic Center at Forsyth Country Day School changes the lives of hundreds of students each year. Whether they have a diagnosed learning difference, as about 25 percent of students who use its services do, or they just need extra support and guidance, the Johnson Academic Center provides educational support services during the school day to help students thrive.

We interviewed three alumni at various stages of their educational journeys post-FCDS about the impact the Johnson Academic Center had on them: Spencer Powell ’16, James Snyder ’22, and Sarah Grace Clifton ’22. All three alumni worked with long-time language development specialist Ann Parke Muller, now FCDS’s Lower School Director, at some point in their journey. “There’s so much cognitive power there,” she said of Spencer,

James, and Sarah Grace. “We were just trying to unlock it for them. After that, the sky was the limit.”

SPENCER POWELL ’16, UGA ’20, LMU ’25

Spencer Powell ’16 recently finished his second summer of interning with Winston-Salem District Attorney Jim O’Neill. He’s in his final year of law school at Lincoln Memorial

University in Knoxville, Tennessee, and he’s found his happy place: the courtroom.

“When I graduated from the University of Georgia, I knew I wanted to go to law school, but I thought I’d be a corporate lawyer,” he said. As soon as he set foot in a courtroom, however, that idea was quashed. “Being in a courtroom is intoxicating,” Spencer said. “In the district attorney’s office, there is a service component to helping

POTENTIAL The Power of the Johnson Academic Center

the community in working to protect and uphold justice. Now that is the kind of path that excites me.”

When he first started at FCDS, finding this kind of fulfillment wasn’t something Spencer could have dreamed of. “When I first came to Forsyth in third grade, my reading and writing were not on par,” he said. Spencer was diagnosed with dyslexia and began to work with a language development specialist on specific strategies that help dyslexics learn. “My first [language development] teacher was Kathy Hendricks,” he said. “I dreaded reading, but she made it fun and engaging.” As he progressed through the middle and upper schools, he also worked with Peggy Gallagher,

Martha Farrabee, and Annie Troxell. “I always had great ladies in the Johnson Academic Center who helped me. They taught me specific techniques and made me believe I was smart at a time when I didn’t believe I was smart at all.”

One thing about the Johnson Academic Center that was invaluable to Spencer was how his teachers advocated for him. “I got all of my textbooks as audio versions, and the teachers always helped me find alternative materials.” If needed, his language development teacher would advocate for him with his classroom teachers to help make sure they understood what he was facing and how they could help. “The advocacy component of the Johnson Academic

Center is underrated,” he said. “Through college counseling and the Johnson Academic Center and having that track record of very concrete plans and accommodations was instrumental in getting me help at the University of Georgia.”

Today, Spencer is thankful for his dyslexia. “I’m incredibly grateful to be dyslexic,” he said. “I’m genuinely thankful that my brain is wired this way.” He said that having to work harder due to dyslexia has been a strength. “The work ethic that dyslexia has sown is required in what I do, and I’ve applied that work ethic to all aspects of my life.” Dyslexia also helps him be creative with problem solving. “When I approach a problem in law

school, I will find a different route to solve it that people without dyslexia never even considered. If not for that struggle, I wouldn’t be in law school to begin with.”

Spencer doubts he would have this attitude if he hadn’t had the support he got from his family and the Johnson Academic Center. “It truly changed my life,” he said. “I remember the relationships with my language development teachers and how pivotal they were to finding success. With their help and guidance, I could get where I wanted to go. I unequivocally would not be the man I am today without the Johnson Academic Center. I’ve told many people that my Forsyth experience changed my life and the chief mover of that was the Johnson Academic Center.”

JAMES SNYDER ’22, GRINNELL COLLEGE ’26

“The Johnson Academic Center allowed me to love school, which opened the door for me to pursue my interests outside of the classroom.”
— James Snyder ’22, Grinnell College ’26

James Snyder ’22 is thriving in his junior year at Grinnell College, where he’s double majoring in anthropology and studio art, running NCAA Division III cross country and track, and planning a career in advertising. He is confident and poised, balancing his academic, artistic, and athletic commitments with skills he learned in the Johnson Academic Center.

James started in the Johnson Academic Center in second grade for language development and speech articulation issues. “Fast forward 10 years to my senior year at FCDS, when I created and hosted a podcast for [the school] as an independent study and completed the highest level AP English classes with stellar scores,” James said. “My FCDS experience would have been far less enjoyable and certainly not possible without the one-on-one Orton-Gillingham teaching I received early on.”

James credits his teacher, Ann Parke Muller, with completely changing his view of school. “She taught me how to read and write, and I vividly remember the phoneme handouts she let me draw on and decorate based on the sound-symbol correspondence,” James said. “She was so nice and patient. The Orton-Gillingham approach that the Johnson Academic Center uses was the key for me to learn to read as a dyslexic student.”

James did not always love his educational journey, however. “When I first started at the Johnson Academic

Center, [writing] was frustrating and I did not enjoy it at all. Now, writing is one of my strongest areas, and I’m a stronger writer than my peers at Grinnell,” he said.

James said he wouldn’t have been able to reach as far academically without Ms. Muller and the Johnson Academic Center. “The Johnson Academic Center allowed me to love school, which opened the door for me to pursue my interests outside of the classroom. I found success on the cross country course, in the pool, and on the track at FCDS, and it circled back and positively affected my academic experience.”

SARAH GRACE CLIFTON ’22

When Amidst the Trees first contacted Sarah Grace for this story, she had been up for 48 hours straight covering the presidential debate as an intern for Fox News in New York City. Now a junior at Davidson College, which she attends on the prestigious Bryan Scholarship, Sarah Grace balances rigorous academics (she’s created her own major in digital and screen media with a minor in data science) with playing field hockey for the Wildcats. Sarah Grace is fascinated by the emerging fields she’s studying— and particularly interested in how data and technology affect public sentiment.

“I hope to continue studying and working in the political field after college and focus on how media and technology determine an individual’s

political beliefs and, as a result, the functioning of our democracy,” she said.

Like Spencer and James, Sarah Grace sought help from the Johnson Academic Center early.

“I first started receiving services from the Johnson Academic Center when I was in second grade,” she said. “My mom and teachers noticed that I was behind with regard to my reading comprehension.”

She began working with Ann Parke Muller, whom she affectionately calls AP. “AP was the most influential teacher in my education at Forsyth,” Sarah said. “I started working with her in second grade, yet the skills and confidence she helped me gain are with me to this day. AP made learning fun.”

Sarah Grace recalled how difficult it was to leave class or miss an extracurricular activity, and how hard it was to be behind her peers in something. “Knowing I was behind other kids in regard to my academics was something very difficult for me,” Sarah Grace said. “AP’s confidence in me and care for my success allowed me to feel comfortable in my own skin and accept that some parts of my academic journey would be harder than others. She believed in me even when I did not believe in myself.”

The Johnson Academic Center helped Sarah Grace develop more skills

than she fully understood until recently. “It was hard to realize the vast impact the services at the Johnson Academic Center had until I was thrown into the competitive environment of college academics,” Sarah Grace said. “Being able to manage your time effectively and write a paper quickly and efficiently are two of the most critical skills that I have used in college. AP equipped me with the skills to read in a way that saves time while still allowing me to gather all of the necessary important information and main themes from various pieces of literature. Similarly, the way I learned to plan out and structure an essay in the Johnson Academic Center is still something I use to this day.”

Sarah Grace finds that she can write papers more quickly than most of her peers, and saving time is key when trying to balance her demanding academic and athletic schedules. “I rarely have a minute to rest; however, the Johnson Academic Center taught me how to stay [caught] up with all of my course material even though it would naturally take me longer than my classmates to complete. Having a personalized learning plan through the Johnson Academic Center allowed me to find the most effective way to learn and study, which truly is different for each student, and has allowed me to excel in my academic journey beyond Forsyth.”

CAMPUS NEWS

FCDS Wins Fourth Wells Fargo Cup in a Row with Five State Championships

Congratulations to Fury athletics for winning its fourth consecutive Wells Fargo Cup!

We had five NCISAA state championship wins: boys’ cross country, boys’ basketball, boys’ swimming, girls’ lacrosse, and girls’ soccer.

FURY BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY WINS BACK-TO-BACK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to the 2023-2024 boys’ varsity cross country team for winning its second NCISAA 3A state championship in a row! This is the first time in FCDS history that a boys’ cross country team has repeated in consecutive years.

Prior to winning states, the boys won their 12th consecutive conference championship at Ivey Redmon Park in Kernersville. This year’s team was one of the youngest ever, with only one senior boy. The top 14 team members will return for the 2024-2025 season.

“The boys’ team is riding high,” said Head Coach Joe Scott. “Though relatively young, these guys compete like seasoned veterans. Coming in as the favorites, they never seemed complacent or arrogant. They knew that only consistent hard work would give them the opportunity to compete for championships. I think they will come back very hungry in the fall.”

FCDS BOYS’ BASKETBALL WINS FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN 40 YEARS

Congratulations to the 2023-2024 Fury boys’ basketball team on its historic NCISAA 3A State Championship win! The last time the Furies made state champs - or even played in the championship - was way back in 1984.

The team finished its season with an incredible 27 wins, which Head Coach Doug Esleeck said is the most wins in one season in the history of basketball at FCDS. The boys also earned the honor of being ranked fifth in the state - among all schools, public and private, and in all classifications.

“I could not be more proud of this group of young men,” he said. “Like any championship team, they weathered plenty of storms over the course of a long season.”

Leading up to the state tournament run, the coaches watched as every member of the team put aside their individual goals for the good of the team. “They truly had one thought and one purpose: finding a way to win together,” Coach Esleeck said. “They had the opportunity to learn important lessons about being a part of something bigger than themselves, and I hope they carry those lessons into every part of their lives in the years ahead. They accomplished historic things together, and they always represented FCDS with class.”

BOY’S VARSITY SWIM TEAM WINS ITS FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN SCHOOL HISTORY

Congratulations to the FCDS boys’ varsity swim team, which won the NCISAA 3A State Championship for the first time in the history of the school.

“One of the best parts of swimming is that it is both an individual and team sport,” Coach Sawyer Hubbard said. “When you dive in for a race, it’s just you, the water, the competition, and your time. But to score well as a team and to win the championship like we did this year, it took multiple good swims across all the events in the meet.”

The final race was tight, with the Furies beating Asheville School 310 to 296. One swimmer, Thad Austin, set two new individual records in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle and swam a leg of FCDS’s two winning relays. Eric Petruzzi, who also swam part of each winning relay, also took home a dominant win in the 100 breaststroke to give FCDS first place in five out of 11 events.

“The team aspect of Forsyth swimming is what has propelled the program to a state title this year,” Coach Hubbard said. “The boys lift each other up in and outside of practice and the seniors especially seized this opportunity and scored big for us at the meet. Coaching this special group has been an honor of mine and seeing the personal improvement was extremely rewarding. It’s great to see the work pay off at the end of the season with a memory that will last a lifetime.”

GIRLS’ LACROSSE WINS FIRST-EVER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to the Fury girls’ lacrosse team for winning its first state championship in school history!

The team finished the regular season with a 10-6 record, playing a challenging schedule against many Division I schools. Due to their winning record and the strength of their schedule, the Furies earned the number-one seed in the NCISAA 3A State Tournament. With a semi-final win against Greensboro Day School, the Furies advanced to the State Championship against defending state champions the Asheville School. The Furies got off to a dominant start and never let up, with a final score of 14-8.

“This is the culmination of many years of hard work by our players and the devotion and commitment to the lacrosse program by these players and their families,” said Head Coach Laura Clay. “I am so happy for our players—especially the seniors. To win a championship is hard and it requires everyone on the team to support one another no matter their role. We have a remarkable group of players and each one should be proud of what the team has accomplished.”

GIRLS’ VARSITY

SOCCER WINS THIRD STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN THREE YEARS

Congratulations to the girls’ varsity soccer team for winning the NCISAA 3A State Championship for the third year in a row!

The girls dominated the season, finishing 20-0 with 13 shutout victories. In the championship game, they faced number-one seed Cape Fear Academy and won 3-0. Alum and captain Maddie Templeton ’24 scored two goals and Bailey Divelbiss ’29 contributed one.

Head Coach Julie McCann and assistant coaches Nuwo Johnson ’04 and Brendan Bohon were proud of the entire team.“The girls worked hard, cared for one another, respected one another, and grew from the beginning of the season to the end,” Coach Johnson said.

Joe Trotter keeps every letter and email his students—dating back 46 years to when he started teaching in public school— have ever written to him.

“I have boxes of letters, stacks of them,” he said. “When I had a bad day, I would pull out one of those letters and say, ‘That’s why I teach’.”

Mr. Trotter retired in spring 2024 after 20 years at Forsyth Country Day, where he began as a physics teacher and founded the Engineering Program.

“One of my favorite things at FCDS was that at every single class change, I would shake every boy’s hand and give every girl a high five. That’s a memory I’ll take with me,” he said. “I knew every kid. K-12 education is as much about relationships as it is about content. Kids want to learn when they know you and you know them.”

One of his favorite things is to talk to his students after they’ve graduated. “You don’t know the impact you have until you talk to them after they’ve gone out into the world.” Some of his former students—about 10 percent who went through the engineering program—become engineers, “That’s always fun,” he said.

Working with Eric Pike, Mr. Trotter came up with a plan for a series of courses that would become the Engineering Program. He remembers his inaugural class well. “Katie Contento was the first girl I taught in engineering. Bradford Church. Michael Chang,” he said. “It was a great jumpstart and really set the bar high for the program.”

Bradford Church ’08 is now the founder and CPO at Village Labs in Atlanta, which uses AI to make work more meaningful. “Twelve years after I took Mr. Trotter’s Robotics class, I started a company with a couple of MIT CSAIL Robotics Lab graduates. It was only then that I truly appreciated how insane we’d all gone back in 2008,” he said.

“To my surprise, it turns out we’d been building robots to accomplish tasks which would have left even seasoned MIT PhDs hemming, hawing, and muttering things like ‘that’s not possible’ and ‘don’t be ridiculous’. And we did it with LEGOs, some ‘if” statements in C++, and of course, Mr. Trotter. We’d learned more hard skills in the [program] than the average MIT student might learn in their first year.”

Katie Contento ’08 concurred. After earning her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Villanova University, she earned her master’s degree in systems engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. She joined the Coast Guard, where she flew the MH-60T helicopter as a search and rescue pilot. “Just last year I applied to the Coast Guard’s Aeronautical Engineering Program and was accepted,” she said. She recently completed that course of study and now serves as H-60 Aeronautical Engineering Officer for Air Station Kodiak in Alaska.

“I owe [Mr. Trotter] a very heartfelt thank you for [his] contribution to my education and professional development,” Katie said. “[His] encouragement and confidence in me played a central role in my pursuit of an engineering degree and my career path.”

Mr. Trotter loves to hear it. “Students tell me, ‘I am so far ahead because of what I learned here.’ I get that all the time. I get that a lot. ‘I am so prepared and ahead of my classmates’,” Mr. Trotter said.

Bradford has been thinking a lot about why Mr. Trotter had such a profound impact and was able to narrow it down to two reasons. “First, Mr. Trotter brought a wild, visceral reality to academics. When he was teaching, it was never AP Physics or Principles of Computer Science or Introduction to Mechanics and Control to us,” Bradford said. “It was ‘calculate how far we can launch a potato toward the headmaster’s office’ ... or ‘program a robot to bring me coffee from the cafe’. His approach kept us engaged in even the stodgiest subjects and equalized engagement among students that had natural gifts, because it made hard

problems less about whether you were ‘good’ at them (a grade) and more about how we might actually change the world we lived in.”

The second reason was Mr. Trotter’s faith in his students. “Mr. Trotter so firmly encouraged us to believe we could build whatever we dreamed up with physics and engineering knowledge that it was hard to believe that anyone ever doubted it,” Bradford said.

“This isn’t the same as an adult telling you, ‘you can accomplish your dreams.’ It was more of a complete and total lack of acknowledgment of the impossible. If someone had a wild idea, he’d neither suggest it was too difficult nor would he waste time encouraging us. He’d ask for a proposal.”

When Bradford, Katie, and their classmates were learning, Mr. Trotter was learning, too, so he had to believe in possibilities. “I have an electrical background, so I had to learn a lot of the stuff I was teaching. If you teach physics, it doesn’t change. You teach engineering, technology changes constantly. I was having to constantly learn new things. I had to learn to program,” he said. “It never got boring because there was always something new on the horizon. There were times when someone would ask a question and I wouldn’t know the answer.”

Like his students, however, he learned by doing, and sometimes failing. “When we got the CNC machine, it came in a box,” Mr. Trotter said. “The students worked on assembling it during class, during study halls, and at lunch. They got in there and put it together purposely. It’s teaching them the math and science behind it and then now you have to do something with it.”

He’s had students so dedicated he would have to beg them to go home. “Guys, it’s five o’clock. It’s time to go home, and they’d ask for ‘five more minutes’. That’s the thing of it. You see the enthusiasm of these kids. I have kids that are unbelievable. I have kids that it’s not their natural aptitude, but they will learn. They learn to think and problem solve.”

Katie credits Mr. Trotter’s guidance with the much of the success she enjoys today. “I firmly believe [Mr. Trotter] is the reason I am where I am today,” she said. “I hold [him] as the educator who was most impactful in my life.”

Bradford agreed. “Joe, you’ve made a huge mark on my life, and I thank you for it. I wish you a long, happy, and creative retirement,” he said. “I also want you to know that today, comfortably ensconced in my mid-thirties, whenever I find myself start to hem, haw, or mutter things like ‘that’s not possible’ and ‘don’t be ridiculous,’ I look back to that room on the second floor of Pike in 2008, just across from Mr. Funk’s classroom, when we’d all bitten off way more than we could chew and succeeded all the same.”

“You don’t know the impact you have until you talk to them after they’ve gone out into the world.”

The Class of 1974 wasn’t the first class to graduate from Forsyth Country Day School—that honor goes to the Class of ’73. The Class of ’74, however, was the first to come together to celebrate its 50th reunion this past April.

Of the 35 members of the class who were invited, 28 came, said Steve Sloan ’74, who helped organize the event. He said that number included some people who attended FCDS but did not graduate with the class. Sadly, four members of the class have passed away - Kathryn Leinbach Brown, Jan Hampton, Cathy Deal, and David Butner. “They were there with us in spirit,” Steve said.

Why has a class that graduated 50 years ago remained so close? First, they grew up together. “Back in our youth, in the 60s and 70s, Winston-Salem was

a smaller city, more provincial than it is today. Some of us were from families that had been in Winston-Salem for generations,” Steve said. Most of the class lived in Buena Vista or Sherwood Forest, and some are even related, including four sets of first cousins: David Stockton and Stu Miller, Will Miller and Stu Miller, Julie McNair McBride and the late Kathryn Leinbach Brown, and Lisa Lybrook Goodson and William Lybrook.

“When we were in high school at Forsyth, the turbulence of the 60s had died down and the Vietnam War was essentially over,” Steve said. “It was the Camelot era for Winston-Salem.”

It was also a time when if you wanted to hang out with friends, you did so in person. “We had no social media or cell phones,” he said. “We were with each other because it was the only way to interact, we had known each other most of our young lives, for the most part, were all neighbors and most important, we genuinely liked

each other and wanted to be together.”

The class stayed close to home when its members graduated, too. Most attended North Carolina universities, and after college, the majority settled in-state. “Seventeen members of the Class of ’74 still live in Winston-Salem,” Steve said. “Only three, including me, live outside of the state. The rest live in North Carolina.”

But it’s not just proximity that keeps the Class of ’74 together. “As adults, we made time to see each another,” Steve said. “We have continued to be part of each other’s lives: weddings, births, kids growing up and graduating some from Forsyth and now more weddings and grandkids. “Even though I haven’t lived in Winston-Salem since graduating high school, I have always come back to visit. I’ve stayed close to a lot of people. I see these friends all the time. Every time we see each other, it’s like we were just together last week. We’re all comfortable together and love each other.”

Class of 1974’s

Twenty-eight ’74 alums (including some non-graduating alums) attended the
50th Reunion. First row: Jane Taylor Lassiter, Rush Dorsett Coe, Beverly Rudolph Shaw, Emily Allred Hutchison, Gretchen Pixley, Anne Butler McDowell, Marilyn Steele Paschal. Second row: Julie McNair McBride, David Stockton, Liston Orr, Stu Miller, Laura Carpenter, Debbie Armstrong Lipinsky, Kim Erlacher Johnston. KENNETH PAUL “KENNY” SOMMERKAMP, JR. ’88

Kenneth Paul Sommerkamp, Jr. ’88 passed away peacefully on April 11, 2024, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 54.

Kenny earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama in political science and began his career in commercial real estate at Grubb & Ellis, Bissell Patrick in Charlotte. After 10 years, he moved into business development at York Development Group, Cummins Atlantic, Metrolina Builders, and finally JE Dunn Construction.

Kenny had many close friends from every life stage and was known for being friendly and outgoing. He loved golf and music - especially Phish, Panic, and Goose - and his happy place was listening to a show - either live or at his home. He loved visiting Tuscaloosa and watching his beloved Tide, hanging out at old spots, and visiting the KA house. He loved traveling, loved a good laugh, and had an unwavering zest for a good time. He adored his wife LeAnn, whom he met in college, and their children Ellie, Anna Davis, and Mack. The family loved to spending time together at Sea Island.

Kenny is survived by his wife, LeAnn Glover Sommerkamp, his three children, Ellie Sommerkamp, Anna Davis Sommerkamp, and Mack Sommerkamp. He is survived by his sister Paula Sommerkamp Magargle and nephew Alex Magargle and his father Kenneth Paul Sommerkamp Sr. He is also survived by many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.

III ’93

Joel Alexander Black III ’93 passed away on November 22, 2023. He was 49. Alex was an incredible swimmer, winning medals for FCDS and swimming collegiately at Southern Methodist University. Swimming was in his blood, and he enjoyed sharing his love of the sport with the young swimmers he coached in Texas and North Carolina. In 2012, Alex was inducted into the Fury Athletic Hall of Fame for his swimming accomplishments.

Alex’s greatest achievement was being a dad to his son, Joel Alexander Black IV, who was born in 2014. Alex was a talented artist, a Shakepeare enthusiast, an avid Star Wars fan, and a lover of music (especially the Rolling Stones) and movies. He loved to share his interests with others, and his enthusiasm and joy for life were undimmed by his six and a half year battle with colon cancer, which he handled with a grace and determination that inspired everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his parents, his wife, Betty Robinson Black, their beloved son, Joel Alexander Black, IV, his sister, Suzanne Black Wrighton ’96, his nephew and niece, Brian and Bonnie Wrighton, and uncles, Samuel Wauford and David Black.

Margaret loved living on the French Broad River with her partner of six years, Trevor, whom she married two years ago, and taking part in Marshall’s festivals, especially the Mermaid Parade, where she danced down Main Street with her husband as her pirate mate.

Welcome to the 2023-2024 Impact Report. It’s a snapshot of our success and a list of everyone—more than 2,000 donors—who helped make the Campaign for Forsyth the most successful campaign in school history. We raised more than $12 million dollars and transformed our campus to enhance the lives of our students, faculty, and families and to ensure that we continue to live our mission to prepare students for what’s ahead and our vision to know ourselves, connect with others, and build community.

I’m so thankful to everyone who gave to support this campaign and the work we do at FCDS. First, I’d like to thank our Board of Trustees for all they do for the school. I’m especially grateful to Mark Dunnagan for his leadership and service as Chair of the Board of Trustees. I’d also like to recognize and thank our campaign leadership team. We simply could not have run this campaign successfully without the support and leadership of our Honorary Campaign Co-Chairs Betty Quick and David Neill, the Honorary Campaign Cabinet of Bruce Brown ’74, Toni and Jimmy Dew, Melanie and Robert Niblock, Margaret and David Townsend, and Ilene and Dr. Jaime Trujillo; Current Parent Co-Chairs Shea and Brad Breitling and Meredith and Matt Masten, and Faculty Emeriti Pattie Stoltz and John Danforth.

We raised more than $12 million dollars and transformed our campus to enhance the lives of our students, faculty, and families...

I’d also like to thank all of the parents, faculty, alumni, grandparents, alumni parents, corporate partners, friends, and current students who supported the Campaign for Forsyth. Your gifts, no matter the size, allowed us to reach our goal and create the spaces and places needed to fulfill our mission and vision for what’s ahead.

Thank you and Go Furies!

Please note that this report reflects gifts received by June 30, 2024.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR SUPPORTERS!

If you made a gift to FCDS before June 30, 2024 and your name does not appear in this report, please contact Michel Ellis at michelellis@fcds.org.
