Start the year off right by reviewing policies

As we enter the New Year, we should look at the highs and lows of last year to determine what we can learn from our past experiences.

Family members should likewise reflect and celebrate their successes and challenges and take stock of those situations and events that could serve as life lessons.

The beginning of a new year is an opportunity to review and collaborate to make 2023 a banner year. As families, we should also look at the legal issues that confront us and the ones we love.

I recommend a review of all insurance policies to be assured of proper protections including proper uninsured motorist protection and med pay, and a discussion of health insurance and disability policies to consider whether they need revising.

Meeting with an independent insurance broker to address emerging risks issues should considered.

Do an internal ‘Self Audit’

A self-audit can ensure a candid look at oneself so as to plan solutions for any frustration in one’s relationships and business. For example, a good look at one’s family relationships may lead to better communication and financial planning.

Meeting with a trusted lawyer can help define what legal protections should be had to help define these legal concerns. Such a trusted advisor can also help navigate legal minefields in planning.

Business

Although it is a good “problem” to have, a growing business creates growing needs.

Businesses often struggle with knowing when to ask for help, before becoming so thin that the risk of errors can increase. This can be a good time of year to review whether it would be appropriate to bring on more personnel. A good review with a lawyer or accountant can bring about good planning.

As we enter a new year we must review the past and forge a new future. The year 2023 is a time to plan ahead and prepare for the challenges.

Weather-related flight delays or cancellations are often the cause of much frustration. However, one timely storm nearly 80 years might just have paved the way for a beloved beverage.

In 1943, Joe Sheridan was working as a chef at the Shannon Airport in Ireland. According to the Foynes Flying Boat and Maritime Museum, on one fateful night, a flight bound for Newfoundland was forced to return to the airport in Foynes due to inclement weather.

Sheridan was called back to work that night and asked to create a warm beverage for the suddenly stranded passengers. Quick on his feet, Sheridan brewed some coffee but decided to add a little whiskey. Asked if the beverage was Brazilian coffee, Sheridan shook his head before indicating his newly minted creation was “Irish coffee.” And thus a legendary beverage was born.

This recipe, courtesy of the Foynes Flying Boat and Maritime Museum, can be great for anyone who wants warm up with their own batch of Irish coffee at home.
