Editor’s Preview Farewell, friends Michael Sudhalter Editor
S
erving as editor of the Fort Bend-Katy Business Journal was one of the great joys of my professional life. Prior to this endeavor, I had very little magazine knowledge. But as the months went on, I gained experience and learned the ins and outs of managing a magazine. During that time, we had the chance to profile some of the most interesting business owners, community leaders and politicians in the Fort Bend-Katy community. This month’s edition is no different as we profile Fred Taylor, who is running for Missouri City Mayor in the May 7 election. Taylor has a great deal of experience, from serving in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves to working as a corporate executive, and as a special education teacher. I have great memories of my 18 months at the helm of the Business Journal, but there’s a time for everything. And now is the time to bid farewell to my loyal readers. Please join me in extending Joe Southern, the new editor of the Fort Bend-Katy Business Journal, a warm welcome. Thank you, Michael Sudhalter

Puzzled by Retirement Planning?
R
etirement planning is a lot like putting together the pieces of a puzzle. Retirement planning is not about accumulation, but is about distribution. Thus, your stock broker or financial advisor who has helped you amass your lifetime savings, was great at accumulating your assets but perhaps is not so great at distributing your assets. When you’re retiring, it’s not so important who is the best stock picker, or who has the lowest trade costs, but rather who can put together a plan to help you retire and stay retired. That’s the bottom line, isn’t it? What are the pieces of this puzzle? They differ for everyone. But, some of the pieces of the puzzle are income sources — social security, rental property, pension, and any other source of systematic income that you have. These differ from investment assets, which would be IRAs, Roth IRAs, 401Ks, 403Bs, TSAs, TSPs, brokerage accounts, SEP IRAs, Simple IRAs, Deferred
Compensation Plans. Almost everyone has social security or a government pension, but for most people, this source of income alone will not sustain them in retirement. If you’re in the minority who April R. Roberts, J.D. can sustain their lifestyle based on social security and pension, then “Congratulations!”. For the rest of you, what we have to do is determine 1) your necessary monthly gross monthly income; 2) how much income you will receive in retirement from “income sources”; 3) subtract #2 from #1 and obtain your “income gap.” For example, if you need
$6000/month before taxes to cover your bills and daily living, and you will receive $2500/month in social security and no pension, then your income gap is $3500/ month. This is the retirement income that we need to create to make sure that you live comfortably in retirement. On top of that, we need to consider inflation, which we will get to later. For now, let’s keep it simple and say that $3500 is your “income gap”. Where do we go to solve for this gap? We have to go to your investment assets and convert some of them to an income source. But first, we need to determine your “withdrawal rate” from your total investment assets. Let’s say that you’ve saved $750,000 for retirement. If you need $3500/ month, that’s $42,000/year of income from your retirement assets. We simply divide $42,000 by $750,000 to get your withdrawal rate, which would be 5.6%. continued, on page 8

Five Reasons why you need an Estate Plan By T. Aaron Dobbs
M
any people avoid planning for their potential incapacity and eventual death. Here are five reasons why you should reconsider that approach. #5: Your Will was not drafted in Texas. State laws regarding the probate of wills and the administration of estates vary, and your out-of-state will may not be maximized for probate in Texas. #4: Your marital status has changed. Failing to update your estate plan after a marriage, divorce or death may have unintended consequences, including leaving your current plan ineffective. #3: Your estate has significantly increased or decreased in value. If your estate has grown substantially, your
current will may not include provisions designed to avoid or mitigate estate taxes. #2: You have purchased real property located outside of Texas. If you own real property in multiple states, your will may have to be probated in each of those jurisdictions if you have not properly planned to avoid multiple probates. #1: You are about to sell or transition away from your business. It can be difficult to continue the operation of a business upon the death or incapacity of a business owner if you do not have a succession or continuity plan in place. T. Aaron Dobbs is board certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Now, if you know traditional thinking, you would think that you don’t have enough to comfortably retire. What do I mean? Well, traditionally if you are working with a brokerage house, when you retire they will put you 60% in stock and 40% in bonds and tell you that with this mix, you can withdraw 4% from your assets. But, you need to withdraw 5.6%, so you may think that you need to work longer and save more. Another erroneous part of this formula is that stocks and bonds in today’s economy are not likely yielding 4%. So, you will be drawing down money each year. What if the market has another recession and declines 50%? You have 60% in stock, so your portfolio would decrease 30% overall. On your $750,000 of savings, that would equal $225,000. Let’s keep things simple and assume that your bonds did not decrease in value (which we all know is not very likely). Your investable assets now equal $525,000, but you still need to withdraw $42,000/year. Let’s do that math: $42,000/$525,000 = 8% withdrawal rate. If you were afraid that your assets wouldn’t last at a 5.6% withdrawal rate, how likely are they to last your lifetime at an 8% withdrawal rate? With a 60/40 blended portfolio, not very likely. So, how do we get you retired with the above scenario? By turning some, not all, of your investable assets into income sources. If you’d like to learn more about turning your retirement savings into income sources, reach out to us and ask for our Consumer’s Guide to Finding the Right Retirement Income Planner. Or, just give us a call and schedule a time to come in for a complimentary, no cost evaluation. You’ll be glad you did!

This year’s season kicked off with an elegant Mothers’ Luncheon at Holley’s Seafood Restaurant and Oyster Bar in midtown Houston. Activities for this year’s Beaux included a golf clinic at Royal Oaks Country Club, a financial management workshop hosted by and held at the offices of McConnell Jones Lanier & Murphy, LLP (MJLM), a worship experience at St. James’ Episcopal Church (Houston), and an etiquette workshop, for the 52 Beaux and Belles, at Holley’s Seafood Restaurant and Oyster Bar. The formal culminating Beautillion Ball was co-emceed by Houston’s recentlyelected mayor and long-time State Representative, the Honorable Sylvester Turner, and Fox 26 News anchor Melinda Spaulding. An uplifting invocation was delivered by Reverend Derrick Cyprian, pastor of Clear Lake AME Church, and father of one of this year’s Beaux. A significant fundraiser in the life of the chapter, this year’s Beautillion event proudly benefited both the Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated Foundation as well as Covenant House of Texas.

Memorial Hermann named Region’s Most Outstanding Care providers in Four Top Categories
T
hree Memorial Hermann Health System hospitals as well as Memorial Hermann Life Flight® were recently honored at the SouthEast Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC) Awards Banquet 2016. Memorial Hermann received awards in four of the top categories, including: • Cardiac Award (hospital less than 250 beds): Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital • Cardiac Award (hospital with more than 250 beds): Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital • Pediatric System of Care Award: Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital • EMS/Air Medical Partner of the Year Award: Memorial Hermann Life Flight In its inaugural awards ceremony, SETRAC honored hospitals and first responders who have exhibited outstanding performance in areas such as trauma care, stroke care, cardiac care, multi-agency teamwork, disaster preparedness and public education. Award recipients were chosen by an 11-member selection committee, which was comprised of SETRAC committee chairs and independent healthcare representatives. The banquet was held at the Marriott Westchase in Houston and was attended by nearly 700 individuals and elected officials,
12
including State Representatives Rick Miller, Sarah Davis, John Zerwas, M.D. and Cecil Bell. Also in attendance were City of Houston EMS Physician Director David Persse, M.D., and Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, owner and operator of Gallery Furniture. “The banquet was held as a way for hospital executives and clinicians, as well as EMS and other first responders across our nine counties to celebrate their accomplishments,” said Darrell Pile, SETRAC CEO. “All too often we forget their sacrifices so we wanted this awards banquet to be an evening where every link in the emergency healthcare system could be recognized for the truly amazing things they do every day.” Former patients from the award-winning hospitals were also on-hand to share their stories of exceptional care, including Linda Flynt whose family experienced the life-saving benefits of Life Flight and the Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute – the city’s only location to offer Level I trauma care for both adult and pediatric patients – after their private plane crashed in July 2014. “Following the crash, my son Jonathon

was scared to be in the Life Flight helicopter by himself but he was comforted knowing that I was able to be in there with him,” said Flynt. “Even after arriving at the hospital, I felt more at ease knowing that my family was being taken care of in the same place. I could see that my son was recovering and being cared for even though I wasn’t able to care for him myself.” The awards are especially meaningful to Memorial Hermann given the breadth of locations and services honored. “On behalf of the entire system, I am incredibly proud and honored that we received such tremendous recognition from the healthcare community in Southeast Texas,” said Dan Wolterman, Memorial Hermann President and CEO. “SETRAC is a true testament to the fact that, in order to be successful, we must all work together to increase access to care and continually improve the quality of care delivered to the millions of Texans we collectively serve every day.” SETRAC was founded by the late James H. “Red” Duke, Jr., M.D., legendary trauma surgeon at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and John B. Holmes Professor of Clinical Sciences at UTHealth Medical School, and has been funded by the Texas Department of State Health Services for the last 23 years.

he Houston District Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) has announced Cross Creek Ranch as its People’s Choice Award winner in the 2016 Development of Distinction Awards. Cross Creek Ranch was one of eight finalists in the annual awards program, which recognizes developments and public open spaces that exemplify best practices in design, construction, economic viability, health places, marketing and management. In awarding recipients, ULI said “Cross Creek Ranch creates an enduring community by prioritizing core values associated with a sustainable environment, engaged people, vibrant culture, endless learning and interconnectedness. Together, the result is a distinct development that has experienced sustained and recognizable economic, social and environmental success within the Houston region and beyond.” A 3,200-acre master-planned community in Fulshear, Cross Creek Ranch is designed around following environmentally friendly, sustainable practices. Among the highlights is Flewellen Creek, winding approximately 150 acres through the development. Much of the creek has been restored, creating a balanced ecosystem for wildlife and a natural backdrop for amenities. A 50-acre pond in Cross Creek Ranch also has been developed as a bird and wildlife habitat, as well as a groundwater filtering system. “Our significant natural elements combine with premier amenities and an array of luxurious homes to create a masterful West Houston community,” said Rob Bamford, general manager of Cross Creek Ranch. “It is an honor to receive this distinguished award from such a prestigious organization.” Finalists in three categories of the Development of Distinction Award — forprofit, not-for-profit and urban green space — were announced in October. An international jury of real estate experts toured each project late last year to select the winners. For more information about Cross Creek Ranch, visit www.crosscreektexas.com.
Sugar Land marketing professional participates in Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo
L
ike many of his fellow Sugar Land residents, Kirby Ducayet enjoys the annual Houston Livestock & Rodeo in March. But for Ducayet – the owner of the Sugar Land location of SpeedPro Image franchise – the annual event is about more than bull riding and Cotton Candy. “I love the relationships that have been developed over the years at the Rodeo,” Ducayet said. “As for concerts, all of them have been great. I can’t single any one out.” Ducayet’s been involved with the Rodeo for the past nine years. “My business partner has been a longtime volunteer and member of the HLSR,” Ducayet said. “For over 9+ years my labor and time were also included, so over the years we have made several friends with other volunteers and members. This friendship has led to great business relationships that we look forward to growing over the next few years.” At SpeedPro, Ducayet and his staff take care of a wide variety of services. “SpeedPro is not a large/grand format graphics printer, but a marketing solutions company that happens to specialize in large/ grand format graphics print,” Ducayet said. Among SpeedPro’s services are Large & Grande Format Printing, Window, Wall & Floor Murals, Event Graphics, Trade Show Displays, Indoor & Outdoor Banners and Stands, Couture Cutting and Lettering, Vehicle Wraps, Decals and Fleet Branding, Corporate Décor, and Digital Signage Solutions. Ducayet decided to start Speed Pro Imaging because he wanted to do be an independent business owner. “With a long stint in the corporate environment of the oil and gas industry under my belt I had decided that I wanted my own business; control my own destiny that wouldn’t be so dependent on an ever swaying world commodities market,” Ducayet said. “After a great deal of research I had decided that a welldeveloped and proven franchise was the best investment decision I could make. Therefore, SpeedPro was the logical choice. Ducayet said it’s important to give back to the community, and his company does that annually.

Sugar Land native Jared Jameson provides quality financial planning BY MICHAEL SUDHALTER
F
or Sugar Land native Jared Jameson, the best part about being a Certified Financial Planning Certificant is watching his clients reach their dreams. “I really enjoy helping people reach their financial goals,” Jameson said. “They start as goals and dreams and then they get to fulfill them. We help clients in Financial Planning and Investment Management. We help them with sending their children to college and retirement.” Seventy-five percent of WJ Interests’ business is individuals, while the other 25 percent are companies.
Most clients have $500,000 or more to devote to investments, but Jameson said they work with some clients would have less. Jameson, who now lives in Greatwood, started Sugar Landbased WJ Interests with Jared Jameson his father, William, 20 years ago. They’ve added five staff members to their team over the past 2 years. WJ Interests, 2333 Town Center Drive, Suite 100, manages approximately $250 million for 170 clients. They are unique in that they’re a Fee-Only financial advisory firm. They don’t take

commission on any of the investments. “That way, we can be completely objective when we give financial advice,” Jameson said. Jameson, who earned a Civil Engineering degree from Southern Methodist University, worked as an Engineer for a few years, and then decided, he prefers more personal interaction in his job. The Clements High graduate went on to earn his Master’s of Business Administration from the University of Texas. When he’s not working with clients, Jameson is identifying opportunities for investment and researching market conditions. “I take the information and distill it into an investment strategy,” Jameson said. Jameson said the current oil slump has made some clients more cautious, and he encourages them to scale back their spending. “Don’t take that dream vacation, and just wait to see how things play out,” Jameson said. Jameson, however, pointed to several positive signs in the economy as higher consumer confidence, a lower unemployment rate and automobile sales being at an all-time high. Jameson is heavily involved in the community as the past president of the Sugar Land Rotary Club, and a current or former board member for the Fort Bend Women’s Center, Oak Bend Hospital, Access Health and the Fort Bend Boys Choir. Jameson usually works in a financial capacity due to his strong background in it. He’s also volunteered with the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, the Central Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Bend Literacy Council, Fort Bend Child Advocates and more. WJ Interests supports many of these local charities through donations. Jameson said he’d like to work closely with local schools and begin teaching financial literacy that’s not taught in most high schools. Jameson’s the treasurer for the Fort Bend Economic Development Council, which his father started in the 1980s, and he was recently named treasurer for “Joe Zimmerman for Sugar Land Mayor.” “I’ve known Joe for a long time, and I really believe Joe will continue a lot of the things Mayor Thompson started,” Jameson said.

Medical Billing & Coding training offered at HCC Missouri City Campus Fort Bend County has experienced a recent growth spurt, which has created a need for more trained office staff in the medical field. The Houston Community College (HCC) Missouri City Campus will help fill that need by offering two certificates: Medical Business Office (Medical Billing) and Comprehensive Coding System (Medical Coding). “I worked in the medical field for 25 years before coming to HCC. I spent part of that time in a large clinic specializing in various practices as an office manager,” said HCC Health Information Specialist Jackie Franklin. “The doctor saw 40 to 80 patients a day. The staff could not keep up with the charts that had to be coded and the paperwork to bill patients and insurance claims.” Medical Billing is an entry-level certificate. This certificate takes less than one semester to complete and provides students with knowledge and skills required of clerical health care professionals. Students enrolled in this program can expect to work in a handson environment with medical terminology, patient scheduling, insurance verification,
medical records, collections, accounts payable, financial reporting, and medical billing. Comprehensive Coding System is an advanced entry-level certificate, and takes less than one semester to complete. In medical coding, the employee assigns diagnostics and procedures codes within the electronic medical record, while maintaining compliance with establishing rules and regulatory body guidelines. Students enrolled in this program can expect to work with ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding, basic anatomy and physiology and medical terminology. “These two programs offer students the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to work effectively in managing a medical office, billing for healthcare services, and coding patient care delivered for billing and medical statistic purposes,” said HCC Continuing Education Director Kirk White. For more information on the Medical Billing and Coding classes as well as other courses offered by the Continuing Education Department, go to http://www.hccs.edu/ continuing-education/departments/health/ medical-business-office.

red Taylor has served in the U.S. Marine Corps reserves, worked as a senior executive, started a nonprofit to help his neighbors, and taught Special Education students in the Houston Independent School District. The 49-year-Missouri City resident is running for Mayor of Missouri City on May 7, 2016. “I love Missouri City,” Taylor said. “It’s a good city that has the potential to become great.” Taylor’s challenge? Unseating Allen Owen: a 22-year-incumbent who is seeking re-election for the 11th time since taking office in 1994. “I recognize the efforts that Owen has made in the past for our city,” Taylor said. “He has overseen a lot of change in the past 22 years, but it’s time for new leadership.” Taylor said his overall life and work experiences make him just as qualified if not even

COVER STORY HHHHHHHHHHHHH more than Owen when he was first elected. Taylor believes in a pro-active approach to recruiting and retaining high-quality businesses for the city. His vision will benefit the entire population, rather than a select few. Taylor’s story started in Leesville, Louisiana. where he grew up as the 21st of 22 children. His father, a World War II Veteran, was a very tough man and ruled his house with a hand of steel. He taught the young Taylor to work hard with his hands and never give up on anything. With a fourth grade education, Taylor’s father started a construction company where the young Taylor had to work every break he had from school. The family moved to Houston, and Taylor grew up in the Settegast neighborhood graduating from East Houston Elementary, B.C. Elmore Middle School and Forest Brook High School or affectionately known as “The “Brook”. It was during that time that Taylor became interested in politics while volunteering for the campaign of the late Ernest McGowen, a prominent politician who served on the
Houston City Council as well as the Houston Community College and Houston ISD boards. While in high school, Taylor joined the Marine Corps reserves in its delayed entry program until his graduation on May 28, 1985. The next day May 29, 1985, Taylor was on a plane to San Diego, Calif. where he started his basic training following in the footsteps of his late father and late sister. The training was rigorous, but Taylor credits his tenacity for success to his father who challenged him to succeed throughout his youth. After serving his country, Taylor received an honorable discharge. Taylor started working for Al Copeland’s Enterprise, a chain restaurant, and then he opened his own restaurants, one in Dallas and one in Houston. Taylor worked as an executive for the Jasper Oil Company in East Texas. Taylor stated he’s had many jobs, some glamorous and some not so glamorous. Taylor returned to college and enrolled at the HCC and the University of Houston-Downtown. Taylor earned a Political Science degree from the UH-Downtown and then dedicated himself to serving his community. Taylor obtained his teaching credentials from HCC and became an educator in HISD, beginning his teaching at Thomas Middle School. “Principal Bill Sorrell gave me my first teaching assignment and I will never forget that or him,” Taylor said. “It’s about giving back to the community

Taylor, who moved to Missouri City in 2010, currently works as an educator, small business owner and a business consultant. In addition, Taylor is the founder of “Our Voice Matters”, which assists elderly and disabled individuals by providing free lawn service, home repair service and outreach services to those who couldn’t otherwise afford it. Taylor, a member of Missouri City Baptist Church, is the proud father of two sons, two daughters and one granddaughter. Taylor may be a first time candidate, but his commitment to Missouri City is strong. Many Missouri City residents are familiar with Taylor, who is accustomed to knocking on doors and listening to the concerns and questions of thousands of Missouri City voters. As an active member of his community, Taylor has successfully managed the campaigns of Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Judge Joel Clauser and Houston Community College trustee Neeta Sane. Taylor also managed Missouri City council member Yolanda Ford’s 2013 campaign. Missouri City is a safe place, but we deserve a safer place to live. That is why I will support and increase the number of our First Responders. We also need to fix our sidewalks, repair street lights and clean up our neighborhoods. — Fred Taylor When asked about his qualifications, Taylor said, “as a family man and an accomplished senior-level executive, I have a wellestablished track record of successful strategic and risk management leadership for over 25 years. I am no stranger to governance, and I recognize how interwoven our challenges and our solution are,” Taylor said. “I’ve been a businessperson – I understand what it takes to run a company; equally, my experience in business has given me a roadmap for what I believe will move our city forward.” When asked about his vision for Missouri City, Taylor provided a plan which focuses on strategic economic development, the delivery of essential services, a better educational system, and the creation of a modern urban development including entertainment, shopping, and recreational centers. As a military veteran, Taylor is a strong supporter of law enforcement and plans to make police officers and firefighters a top priority, when elected. “We need to do everything we can to make First Responders’ available to the people of Missouri City,” Taylor said. “First Responders are my first and primary focus.” “We deserve a safe place to live – that is why I will support and increase the number of our first responders. We also need to fix our sidewalks, repair street lights, improve our roads, and clean up our neighborhoods.” Taylor also intends to coordinate with the Texas Department of Transportation to improve the lighting on Texas Highway 6 and finally make light rail access between Missouri City and Houston a reality. “We have the technology to improve our roads and traffic flow – it’s about taking the initiative to get the job done,” Taylor said. Taylor supports the current efforts to revitalize the Texas Parkway Corridor, but said more must be done to revitalize the whole city, bring more job creating businesses to keep our property taxes down. Randy Bloom to manage Smart Financial Centre Longtime industry vet Randy Bloom has been selected by ACE Theatrical Group to manage the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land, Texas. Bloom will serve as VP and General Manager for the company created by Allen Becker, the well-known founding chairman of PACE Entertainment Corporation who sold his company during the promoter SFX rollup of the 1990s, leading to the creation of Live Nation. Bloom attended the Pollstar Live! 2016 conference in San Francisco to promote the new facility, a 6,300-capacity venue sitting on 38 acres in the Houston suburb of Sugar Land. The Smart Financial Centre is scheduled to open Fall of 2016, is owned by the city of Sugar Land and cost $84 million to build. “I’m going to try my hand at the venue side of the business,” he told Amplify. Bloom is the son of legendary Feld promoter Allen Bloom, a PT-Barnum style promoter famous for creating a program to give every child in America a free ticket to the circus. Randy worked at Feld in the 1990s and has helped launch several companies including AEG ThemeSTAR

and Act 5 Entertainment. “The building has an interesting configuration,” Bloom explained. “It utilizes a new moveable wall technology that allows us to expand and contract the size of the room,” from 3,300 seats to 6,000 seats. “It fills a nice niche in the region,” Bloom said of the venue, located 20 miles southeast of Houston. Bloom told Amplify the facility will focus on attracting national concerts, touring theatrical shows and family entertainment. ACE Theatrical is owned by the Ambassador Theatre Group Ltd., which man-

kavat was hired as an instructor for Wharton County Junior College’s adult education program and a few years later was promoted to Instructional Supervisor for the same department. Prior to relocating, she worked as an instructor in Persia for 12 years. Zekavat said she was ready to make the move from instructor to recruiter when she applied with TSTC. She said her teaching and supervisory duties gave her the experience she needed in working closely with instructors, providing departmental resources and trainings, and working orientations at different schools. “I felt confident in my skills when I applied for this recruitment position,” said Zekavat. “I was also ready to make the move to TSTC. Their growth was impressive to me and I had to at least attempt to join the team.”
