Katy ISD Education Foundation presents GROOVE Event, April 7

The Katy ISD Education Foundation will host its third annual jazz event, GROOVE, on Thursday, April 7, at Omni Houston Hotel Westside, 13210 Katy Freeway at Eldridge. The reception begins at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Presented in partnership with the Katy Jazz Festival, the event will benefit the Foundation and its Inspiring Imagination teacher grant program.The Foundation has awarded over $500,000 to Katy ISD teachers for inspiring, innovative classroom projects at district campuses. GROOVE features an evening of jazz music performed by The Dennis Dotson Quartet. Dotson began his career as a staff musician for major hotels in Las Vegas, then performed as the jazz trumpet soloist with the Woody Herman Orchestra. His career includes playing with jazz greats Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, the Charles Persip Big Band and the Chuck Israels Nonet. Dotson has been a clinician, guest artist (soloist) and adjudicator at more than 40 colleges and high schools across Texas and throughout the United States. He continues to play at major jazz festivals across the country and in Texas. The Katy ISD Education Foundation plans to award over $1,000,000 in Katy ISD teacher grants over the next five years, an effort that is supported by events like GROOVE. Thompson & Horton, LLP serves as GROOVE title sponsor. Other early event sponsors include Phillips 66, Cross Creek Ranch and Newland Communities. george ranch high school Band Booster cluB's 3rd annual autorama, april 3 On Sunday, April 3 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., the George Ranch High School Band Booster Club (GRBBC) will be hosting its third annual AutoRama at the Ranch community event and fundraiser. A fun family event for the entire community, AutoRama at the Ranch is a unique car show featuring over 100 sports, classic, muscle, exotic, tuner and sport compact and low rider cars. New this year, the event will also feature motorcycles. Last year, over 2,000 people attended to visit with the car owners, enjoy live music and other performances as well as tasty food from food truck vendors and much more. The event organizers are currently looking for car owners and corporate sponsors. Trophies will be awarded in various categories. GRBBC is registered as a 501(c)3 charitable organization, so contributions are tax deductible. Run For The Rose Fundraiser For Brain Cancer, April 10 Brain cancer will once again meet its match on Sunday, April 10 at NRG Park in Houston as patients, supporters and family members converge for the 14th Annual Run for the Rose sponsored by the Dr. Marnie Rose Foundation (DMRF.) The event raises awareness and funds benefiting The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and McGovern Medical School (formerly UTHealth Medical School). The event offers a 5K Fun Run/Walk and Family 1K Fun Run/Walk, and participants range in age from 2 months to 102 years. The race starts and ends outside NRG Arena. Last year’s race attracted more than 5,500 participants and 80 brain tumor patients and netted $610,000. The inaugural Survivor Stroll, a special walk for brain cancer survivors, was hugely successful, and a special tent was added at the Run solely for these individuals. Through the annual fundraiser, DMRF, a tax-exempt public charity, has donated more than $4.75 million for brain cancer research at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center as well as pediatric health initiatives, including but not exclusive to brain cancer, at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital since 2003. In 2015, the group established the Dr. Marnie Rose Professorship in Pediatric Neurosurgery, a permanent endowment for the use and benefit of McGovern Medical School. Dr. David Sandberg, a brilliant pediatric neurosurgeon, will be the first holder of

the newly established Professorship. The DMRF was founded in 2002 in memory of Dr. Marnie Rose, a 28-year-old pediatric resident who died from what is considered one of the deadliest of human cancers, a glioblastoma. Dr. Rose was in the first year of her pediatric medical residency at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital when she was diagnosed with the rare form of brain cancer. Despite her diagnosis, she agreed to share all — her cancer journey, personal life and professional duties as a medical resident — with a TV crew from the ABC reality series Houston Medical. The critically acclaimed hospital series followed the lives of doctors, nurses, other health care professionals and patients at Memorial Hermann in summer 2002. Dr. Rose died on August 23, 2002, from complications of her cancer, just five weeks after the show's final episode aired.

This year’s Run for the Rose begins at 6:30 a.m. with late registration. The Survivor Stroll starts at 8 a.m., followed by an 8:15 a.m. start for the Timed and Non-Timed 5K and 8:45 a.m. start for the Family1K. The Post-race party will offer delicious food and drink items, activities for children, great music, an inflatable, walk-through brain exhibit, and a silent auction. The awards presentation will be inside NRG Arena immediately following the end of the race. Registration fees range from $15 to $40. Sponsorship opportunities start at $1,000. The DMRF receives support from individuals, corporations and foundations. Every $1 that is donated generates an estimated $510 of federal funding and grant support. don’t mess With texas trash oFF- Katy style, april 9 Keep Katy Beautiful is seeking volunteers for its 22nd community-wide clean up event known as the “Texas Trash Off” on Saturday, April 9. Volunteers may register individually or as teams. Scouts, youth/civic and professional groups are not only invited, but encouraged to join in on this immediate impact event. New this year are designated “Family Friendly” clean up locations specified for those wishing to get the kiddos involved in making a difference through this litter abatement outreach effort. The Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off is spearheaded by TxDOT and Keep Texas Beautiful and serves as Texas’ signature event for the Great American Clean Up which is organized by Keep America Beautiful. This one-day event allows community members to join thousands of other Texans in their hometowns to make a big difference just by picking up harmful litter and debris along roadsides, in local parks and other places in the city. “This is one of those events where community members get to know their neighbors a little bit better, and those neighbors become friends in action helping to Keep Katy Beautiful,” says KKB’s Executive Director, Amy Reed. Participants will not only receive supplies for their part of the clean-up, but are also invited to attend the After Trash Bash for a celebration of community, food, prizes and fun. The luncheon will honor Houston’s own multilevel Hadassah leader Linda Freedman Block. A natural tie with Hadassah’s position of connecting and empowering women, Browne’s books’ concepts involve a belief in a sisterhood that promotes self-esteem and positive thinking. Fort Bend County Precinct 3 Commissioner Andy Meyers and Fort Bend County Libraries are hosting the 3rd annual Literary & Fine Arts Festival & Parade in Partnership with Katy SummerFest on Saturday, April 16 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. at the Cinco Ranch Branch Library located at 2620 Commercial Center Drive in Katy. Wild West BReWfest at katy Mills, aPRil 22-23 After a successful 2015 showing at Katy Mills, Wild West Brewfest (WWBF) returns in for a Launch Party on Friday, April 22 from 610 p.m. and the Main Event on Saturday, April 23 from 4-9 p.m. The 2016 WWBF will feature more than 150 breweries bringing more than 500 beers, including rare and one-off varieties made available for this event only.

KCAM Partners With Fotofest For An Intimate Look At Cuba KCAM – Contemporary Art Museum Fort Bend is participating in this year’s biennial FotoFest. This year’s theme, Changing Circumstances: Looking at the Future of the Planet, features an array of work that offers important commentary on our world and its rapid evolution. In light of recent political developments, photographer Kevin Douglas West addresses the restrictions on travel between the U.S. and Cuba being lifted in 2015 with his exhibit at KCAM, Cuba Behind Open Doors. West’s photography takes a colorful and personal look at a country whose recent history has been dramatically changed with this new openness. West captured the daily life of those residing in this fascinating country. By focusing on the humanity and personality of the Cubans West encountered, viewers of his exhibition have an opportunity to see the heart and soul of a country that seems to have stood still in time. “Cuba has been on my bucket list for over 10 years. I love the place and its music, art, people and history. I was lucky to see it,” West said. West is returning to FotoFest, having contributed his work in 2012 and 2014. 2016 Relay foR life of katy, aPRil 29-30 The 2016 Relay for Life of Katy will be held on April 29-30 from 7 p.m.-7 a.m. at Katy City Park, 5720 Franz Road. This event is the largest cancer fundraiser in Katy. The public is invited to form a team, donate, honor survivors with a luminaria, and participate or volunteer to support those who are fighting, those who have lost their fight, and most of all help finish the fight in helping to find a cure for all types of cancer. Relay for Life is an organized, overnight community fundraising walk where teams of people camp out around the track and take turns walking around the track. Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie in a family-friendly environment for the entire community. Because it's a team event, individual participants are not required to be there the entire time. Event details vary by location, but all events have key moments in common: Survivors Lap – All cancer survivors take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while cheered on by the other participants who line the track. The event also recognizes caregivers who give support to those facing cancer. Luminaria Ceremony – This ceremony takes place after dark, so participants can remember people lost to cancer, honor people who have fought cancer in the past and support those whose fight continues. Candles are lit inside of personalized bags and placed around the track as glowing tributes to those who’ve been affected by cancer. Fight Back Ceremony – This ceremony inspires participants to take action, symbolizing the emotional commitment each person can make in the fight against cancer. The action represents what participants are willing to do for themselves, for their loved ones and for their community to fight cancer year-round and to commit to saving lives. In 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society’s fight. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since then, the movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer. Eagle Scout Coronation Seventeen-year-old Kasey Dean Hodge of Katy has earned the Boy Scouts of America’s highest advancement award, the Eagle Scout Award. Kasey was recognized in ceremonies on Saturday, January 30. The Court of Honor was held at The Club at Falcon Point. Kasey was honored to have the following special guests join him at the Court of Honor Ceremony: U. S. Congressman Pete Olson, Texas State Rep. Dr. John Zerwas, Former Waller County Commissioner Stan Kitzman, Matthew Conner representing U. S. Senator John Cornyn, and Ron Servis representing Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. Also attending were Kasey’s greatgrandmother, Marilyn Hodge of Fairfax, Virginia; grandparents Bob and Ann Hodge of Katy; his great-uncle and aunt, Ron and Lisa Hodge of

Great Falls, Virginia; and his uncle Sammy Alfano, also of Great Falls. The following dignitaries participated in the Court of Honor Ceremony and helped to recognize Kasey’s attainment of the Eagle Scout Award: Don Abrahamson, Randall Gardner, Paul Stirrup, Pete Olson, Dr. John Zerwas, Ricky Nietsche, Ryan Pever, Wilson Riddle, Jeremy Smith, and Stan Stanley. A member of Sam Houston Area Council, Texas Skies District, and Troop #73, Kasey is one of only approximately 2 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle rank, according to Sam Houston Area Council vice Chair, Stan Stanley. Each candidate must earn at least 21 merit badges and successfully complete a community, church, or synagogue-related service project to earn his Eagle; Kasey chose to

enhance the City of Katy Dog Park. The project included building a shady spot for guests to sit and enjoy watching their dogs play. The trees were reshaped for easy accessibility to the custom bench Kasey built for the park. They also installed a paved 4-foot-wide path from the concrete to the bench under the shade tree. Kasey also paved the entire area around the bench to add beauty and provide easy access to the bench. Brad Barnes, director of the City of Katy Parks and Recreation Department, expressed the City of Katy’s appreciation: “I am impressed with Kasey’s commitment to this project that benefitted the community – the heart of Katy – his home town.” Barnes also added that Kasey went to great lengths to ensure everything went smoothly and thanked Kasey for allowing

the City of Katy residents to be the beneficiaries of his Eagle Project. Kasey is a senior at Katy High School and involved in many community projects. Kasey credits his experiences with the Boy Scouts of America as being an instrumental part of strengthening the love and bond he has with his dad, Richard Hodge. he Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition is the flagship of Tundras. Both luxurious and capable, this Tundra has a proud heritage that Toyota won’t let you soon forget. The Tundra got a major remodel a couple of years ago, and for 2016 it gets a few minor touch-ups. All Tundras have an upgraded electronics interface this year, while the 1794 gets a larger gas tank and a standard integrated trailer brake control. The 1794 also gets a slight face lift on the front, and can also be equipped with the TRD Off-Road package. First, a little history. The date of 1794 pays homage to the founding year of the ranch that the San Antonio Toyota Plant calls home. With special badging, 20-inch wheels, and Lexus-quality leather, the 1794 Edition

is a workhorse in show horse clothing. The Tundra is designed, engineered, and built entirely in the U.S. and is mostly made from American-made components. Its styling is certainly bold enough, with that huge chrome grille and tight design lines. Inside, the cabin is a study in refinement and feels equally at home off road or at a country club. The Crew Max cab is roomy and comfortable for adults both up front and in the back seat. Copious amounts of legroom and a reclining rear seat are major contributors. The TRD package adds even more capability, with 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels with P275/65R18 off-road tires, tow hooks (standard on 4x4), off-road-tuned suspension, Bilstein® shock absorbers, engine and fuel tank skid plates, and exclusive TRD graphics on bed quarter panels. There’s no mistaking that driving this truck gives you a commanding presence. It’s big and brawny and you have to watch yourself in narrow places because its burliness makes everything around you seem much smaller. However, it handles quite well despite its truckiness. Steering and braking feel accurate and offer good feedback. Outside noise is minimal — including the roar from the big engine up front. In fact, even for those who feel that driving is a bother, the ILX will make your commute much more enjoyable. Katy couple devoted to helping area youths achieve their dreams

He is in his 28th year with the district, 12th year as the head baseball coach at Morton Ranch High School, and also serves as the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assistant football coach and health and physical education department chair. She is the campus/principalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s secretary at Tompkins High School and the calf scramble greeters chairman for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where she provides support and mentorship to

youth participants. This time of year, Jim and Crystal work arduous schedules, running from their day jobs at school to the endeavors that fuel their respective professional passions during the evenings; he at Maverick field and she at NRG Stadium. The Early Years Jim, known to his close friends as Jimbo, grew up in Katy and attended Katy ISD elementary and junior high schools. Following his eighth-grade year his family relocated to Sealy and he attended Sealy High School, where he was a celebrated athlete. After gradu-

ation, Jim headed to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville to study education and play baseball. At SHSU, after two years on the team, Jim realized that his baseball-playing days were numbered. The head coach at SHSU, however, saw something special in Jim, and offered him the coveted position of student assistant coach to keep him with the team. This turn of events ultimately played an enormous role in the trajectory of Jim’s life. He says, “For five years I sat beside Coach Skeeters in the dugout and soaked up as much baseball knowledge as I possibly could. If it wasn’t for Coach Skeeters, I wouldn’t be the successful person that I am today.” In addition to realizing his calling to teach and coach, something else happened to Jim in college that would once again change his life dramatically: a teammate introduced him to Crystal, a coed from Houston who worked in the athletics office. Crystal had lived in Calallen, outside of Corpus Christi, until the age of 12 when she moved to Houston. She had grown up a rodeo kid, both in Calallen and in Houston, where her dad became involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1974. She was part of the first graduating class of Elsik High School in Alief before she enrolled in SHSU as a business administration major. Jim and Crystal immediately hit it off. Crystal says, “On our first date, he taught me how to tamp a pitcher’s mound. I knew from the beginning what I was in for and loved every moment.” Jim says that the first thing he noticed about Crystal was her genuine kindness. “There is a friendliness about her that catches your attention from the start,” he says. The two were married in June 1986 in Houston and left the next day to return to Huntsville so Jim could help run the Sam Houston baseball camp. Jim acknowledges with a smile, “I am fortunate that she knew exactly what she was getting into.” Life in Katy After graduation, Jim was recruited to return to Katy ISD, and the couple jumped

or years, April Murphy, who is this year’s featured artist at Houston’s prestigious and fun Bayou City Art Festival (BCAF), made a solid living as a artist doing marketing and graphic design for a local bank. In January 2009 that bank was bought by BBBA, and Murphy was part of the 25 percent of employees who lost their jobs. “Nothing like that had ever happened to me before,” she said. “I was stunned, and for about 15 minutes I had a pity party.” After that quick indulgence, she decided to go get a canvas and paint. She continued, “I had received a severance, so I thought it would be great to just have some fun and play for a little while.” When Murphy had enough paintings to sell, she approached the manager at the neighborhood coffee shop where she stopped every morning and with whom she had a friendly relationship. He allowed her to hang her art, and for the first year of

what was now her new career, she sold exclusively there. “I switched out the paintings every few months, and it was lucrative enough that I didn’t have to get a job.” After building up her confidence and her portfolio, Murphy began to shop for other avenues to display her art. She began with small shows like the First Saturday Art Market in the Heights and JoMar Visions. These venues allowed her to gain valuable experience and taught her important lessons like what kind of art to bring to a show (e.g., originals or prints), how to price her show selections and how to hang her pieces in the space to best attract interest. “Setting up my booth at a show is proba-

they are studying,” she said. “It never fails to bring a huge smile to their face and spark a new conversation about my work.” Murphy said that even with the mild success she was enjoying, for a couple of years she felt like there was something more; she would sit and wonder just what she needed to do to really make a name for herself. She acknowledges three distinct turning points in her career. The first was in 2010 when she joined a Facebook group called SNArt, or Sticky Note Art, which gave its members an opportunity to create with reckless abandon. “Because not everything is worthy of painting,” Murphy said, “doing work on threeinch square sticky notes gets it out of your

system and also gives the artists tons of drawing experience.” She admits she became obsessed with this idea and every morning would finish two pieces. She began to experiment with color during this process, and her current style today was essentially born on her sticky note art. What was formerly a geometric style became more fluid and life-like on the sticky notes she created. Additionally, this process generated hundreds of templates from which she could select the ones she wanted to actually transfer to canvas. The second turning point was in 2013 when Murphy moved into a studio space at Winter Street, which she describes as “the coolest place on Earth,” where more than 90 artists in 60 studios create, show and sell their art on every second Saturday each month and at five bigger shows annually. “Now I can say, ‘Meet me at my studio,’ which to me equates success,” she said. The third turning point for Murphy also occurred in 2013 when a veterinary group, the American Association of Feline Practitioners, searched the Internet for cat artists to feature at their annual conference, and Murphy’s name came up. She went to the event, set up her booth and in the first breakout session sold four paintings to one veterinarian. “The guy in the booth next to me — not an artist — said I looked like a deer in head-

lights,” Murphy said. Armed with the knowledge of a new arena where she could show and sell her work, Murphy attended five vet conferences in 2014 and 10 in 2015. Needless to say, her name and art are now very well known in the veterinary community. And now, another milestone in her career is Murphy’s selection as the 2016 Featured Artist at the BCAF. Her success here has been a gradual and hard-earned as each of her other milestones. She first applied in 2014, when she was selected as part of the second wave of artists whose work was admitted to the show in a section at the back of the event. Then last year, she applied, and didn’t even get placed on the wait list. She admits that with that setback, she was hesitant to even apply this year. “I’m still pinching myself,” she said. “When they called to tell me I was selected to be the featured artist, I was in total shock and my voice sounded completely deadpan when I think back on it. But then I ran upstairs and practically had a fit telling my husband. I don’t think he could even comprehend what I was saying at first.” She attributes her newfound acceptance to a shift in attitudes. “I think people are ready for a shot of ‘feel good,’ ” Murphy said. “I can honestly say that my art provides just that. When people enter my space and look at my art, they start smiling.” She is also profusely grateful to the BCAF board for giving her the opportunity to deliver her unique brand of happiness at this show. Spring Cleaning Tips Art and antiques need special treatment

pring cleaning has its drawbacks and its ad vantages. The drawbacks are obvious: nobody really likes to clean. Once the task is complete, the advantages to spring cleaning include gaining additional storage space, discovering items that you thought you had lost, and netting some quick cash if you work to sell some of your unwanted stuff online. In the world of art and antiques, spring cleaning is a great opportunity to review the condition of objects, repurpose items, sort out what to keep and what to sell, and reconsider a collection’s display options within your home. Here are some tips for your spring cleaning your valuable art and antiques: • Don’t be too hasty to clean paintings. Many people automatically want to clean old paintings, but some just don’t need to be cleaned. If a painting only has minor evidence of surface dirt but no evidence of yellowing varnish, consider leaving the painting alone. Never clean a painting using soap and water as this will dry out the pigment and the canvas, and can lead to pigment flaking and damage over time. • Glass jars and bottles require special care when cleaning. For cloudy glass jars and bottles, use equal parts of white vinegar and distilled water, and wash

n 1952-53, Lars Bang, one of the first graduates of the University of Houston’s College of Architecture, designed the extraordinary Bendit House in the then-new Ayrshire section of Braes Heights subdivision (now Braeswood Place) in suburban Houston. The home was featured on the Contemporary Arts Museum’s popular Modern House Tour VI in 1957, and it was heralded by local and national media, including the January 1954 Good Housekeeping article, “10 Best Small Houses for 1954” and the April 10, 1957 edition of The Houston Press. Of the home’s original design, architect Bang said, “This residence was designed so that the house and lot would be integrated into one unit. To accomplish this, the terrazzo flooring, masonry and frame walls and ceilings were carried from inside to outside, further emphasizing the basic

Fast-forward to 1993. Martha and Steve Curry were shopping for a new home to accommodate their young family. Martha, a nurse practitioner in the Texas Medical Center, and Steve, an architect and a founding principal of Curry Boudreaux Architects, wanted a home on a cul-de-sac and something closer to Martha’s job.

Martha spotted the home, which had just been listed for sale. “It was love at first sight,” said Steve, although nearly all of the original surfaces of the house were obscured by paint, gypsum board and fence-board cladding. The couple was immediately captivated by the very open living/dining/kitchen plan and its relationship to the rear yard and pool. The Currys made an offer on the just-listed house, and Steve began researching the home’s original design. He found architect

Lars Bang in the Yellow Pages and dropped by to meet him and found him in the process of closing down his office, clearing out furniture, equipment and files. When asked about any available documentation of the Bendit House, Bang assured Steve that he didn’t have any project information from that long ago. They discussed the house, which Bang remembered very well, offering several anecdotes from about the original client and construction process. Steve gave Bang his business card and thanked him for his time. That evening at home, Bang called Steve at home with good news. As he had continued with the clearing out of his office, Bang found the complete original construction drawings for the Bendit House in the back of a file drawer. If not for Steve’s inquiry, those drawings would have followed many others into the dumpster that day. Steve went back to Bang’s office the next day to get the documents to copy. Armed with those plans as well as copies of the original press and images of the Bendit House, the couple selected Dovetail Builders to oversee their renovation based on its reputation, quality of its subcontractors and willingness to take on the challenges of a multi-phase restoration/ renovation project. The project’s goal was the total restoration of the original features of the home, along with a new kitchen that would relate to unique aspects of the original, which had been lost to replacement. That set of original construction documents, obtained more than 20 years ago, proved to be a key reference source and design inspiration for this project. This was supplemented by record photographs and on-site analysis of existing conditions revealed during selective demolition. Phase 1 was a total roof replacement with contemporary materials, allowing for vastly improved energy efficiency and resistance to Houston’s semi-tropical environment, with respect for the original detailing of fascia, soffit, flashing and skylights. On-site analysis during demolition of non-original materials and finishes led to a more complete understanding of what was depicted in 1954 Good Housekeeping photos. Original wood paneling and millwork where extant were stripped of paint and restored to finishes of tinted stain, and a plywood ceiling was installed throughout to match original layout and finish. New materials – such as ceramic tile in bathrooms, cork tile flooring in the study, patterned glass at kitchen hanging cabinets, plastic laminate sliding

cabinet doors throughout – were specified to complement to that original color palette. The interior décor gives homage to the original mid-century modern design. The selected furniture and furnishings are low and relatively small in scale, period-correct for the house and collected over 20-plus years. Many pieces were obtained from area estate sales; some are family inheritances. All contribute to the relaxed quality of the environment, with textures and colors of upholstery fabrics and window coverings specific to each room. Light fixtures, hardware and other finish details are either original to the house, “new old stock” found from online sources, or were obtained from neighboring demolition sites. The Currys love their master suite with its all-glass eastern exposure that allows morning light and excellent star and moon gazing at night. But the central living/dining/kitchen area – the heart of the house –

is the couple’s favorite, with light patterns changing throughout the day. Martha said, “The informal, open plan of the common space is cozy enough for daily life, and also is great for entertaining.” And as with the original kitchen, the view to the backyard is stellar, through a kitchen window that is 8 feet high and 32 feet long. The Currys also love that their home is close to all the amenities and services they use now – YMCA, grocery stores, Metro bus line – and will also be great for aging in place. The vintage vehicle in the carport adds to the attention the home draws from passers-by who often wonder if it is a prop. It is not – it is a genuine 1950 Chevrolet Styleline Convertible – Martha’s inheritance from her dad, which coincidentally arrived just as the house project was nearing completion. The end result of the project include the home being featured in the 2012 AIA

The original large-scale handmade brick at the bed headboard continues from inside to outside, creating a walled private garden to the east. All original framing – stained redwood lumber at fixed glass, and painted steel at sliding glass – was refinished to original specifications, and period-correct light fixtures were installed inside and out.

The partition between the master bedroom and bath is the original redwood framing with clerestory glass above a pocket door. Other existing interior surfaces and features were restored, refinished and complemented with new plumbing fixtures and four-inch-square ceramic tile.

Houston Architectural Guide. Stephen Fox, architectural historian and author of the guide, said, “Dating from the first generation of houses built in Ayrshire, this is the perfect Houston house, a forcible reminder of how beautiful and rewarding simplicity and good sense can be.” The home also was featured in the 2015 AIA Houston Home Tour. The Curry’s home represents and yet transcends its time and place with a design rigor effectively showcasing the optimism of early Modernism. It is futuristic enough to be mistakenly identified at times as contemporary construction – although it is 60plus years old. From his architectural perspective, Steve assessed the home’s appeal saying, “The house presents conservatively to the street, while inside we find spatial richness, material tactility, and an expansive quality that belies its humble size. This restoration/renovation project is a tribute to the original Bendit House and its capability to teach and inspire.” With a 2015 AIA Houston Design Award, a 2016 Preservation Houston Good Brick award and a 2016 Preservation Texas Honor Award, the restored Bendit House is the first residential project ever to receive this combined recognition. On top of the home’s numerous accolades, the Currys love living here. It is their dream home — the perfect combination of location, size and requisite amenities – even as it has become a part of the history of the neighborhood and the city. l

Just as people choose fashion to suit different activities, different design considerations for your custom pool will be based on what activities you and your family enjoy. Of course, safety is your first consideration. Proper enclosures and constant supervision are a must to ensure the safety of children, pets and wildlife that may go near the pool. Many specialty safety products are

Next, you begin considering all the other aspects of your pool’s design. Think about the current ages of your family members, and plan for the future as your family grows and changes. Think about how many years you plan to stay in your home, and plan the pool to be as suitable to your future situation as your present one. Are you a young family with growing children? How many children? How many relatives, friends and neighbors might you be entertaining in the pool? Are you a family with teenagers? Are you an older couple building a pool primarily for the grandkids to enjoy when they visit? Is your family primarily adults who will be doing

more sophisticated entertaining? Or will your pool just be a relaxing getaway for you as an individual or couple? These parameters will mostly affect the size, configuration and materials you select, as well as addition of items such as a spa, slide, diving board, shallow kiddie area, tanning bench, etc. Ask yourself what features might provide the most enjoyment for your individual needs, such as whether your family will use the pool primarily for exercise, sports activities such as volleyball or basketball, entertaining adult friends and parties for kids or teens. After you’ve considered the family uses and activities, next you will want to carefully analyze the custom features you can add to a basic pool to perfect it for

maximum function and fun. This would include selection of equipment, high-tech additions that can make the pool easy to operate and maintain, and visual design elements that create the wow factor you might wish for. The average pool size is 16 feet by 32 feet, or about 20,000 gallons of pool water. If you have a large site, big family, lots of teenagers, want a diving pool, or plan to have big pool parties, you may want to design a larger pool. For safety reasons, if you choose to have a diving board, you need a length of at least 20 feet just for the deep end diving-well area of the pool. If you have a smaller site, or don’t have divers in the family, you could opt for a shallower “play pool” design, with a smaller overall size. Most families find themselves spending

rritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects up to 10-15 percent of adults. It has a significant worldwide prevalence. Although IBS is not associated with an increased risk for life-threatening illness, it is associated with a significant health care and economic burden. Studies have shown that IBS patients have an increased number of outpatient health care visits, diagnostic tests and surgeries. IBS can also severely compromise a person’s quality of life. IBS is second only to the common cold as a cause of absenteeism from work. Understanding IBS IBS is best understood as a long-term or recurrent disorder of gastrointestinal (GI) functioning. It usually involves the

large intestine (colon) and small intestine with disturbances of intestinal/bowel (gut) motor function (motility) and sensation. These gut related activities are regulated by the brain. This may also be impaired, which is why IBS is often called a brain-gut disorder. Symptoms of IBS Individuals with IBS may either have mostly diarrhea, mostly constipation, or both diarrhea and constipation (mixed pattern). The pain is often relieved by having a bowel movement and can at times be worsened after eating. Symptoms can change over time. There can be periods when symptoms flare up as well as periods of remission when they diminish or disappear.

In addition, the main bowel habit can vary over time. For example, some people that suffer mainly from constipation (or diarrhea) may later experience a change to constipation alternating with diarrhea. Other common symptoms of IBS include: • bloating (a sensation of fullness in the belly), • urgency (the need to use a restroom in a hurry), • mucus (white or yellow liquid) in the stool, and • the sensation of incompletely passing stools. The typical features of IBS are generally recognizable by a physician. Usually the physician will examine the abdomen of a

patient with IBS and it will be normal or have tenderness. A rectal examination is also done to evaluate the functioning of the rectal floor muscles, particularly if there is incontinence or severe constipation with straining. The most important first step is to confidently recognize the diagnosis of IBS and remove the suspicion of other diseases. Causes of IBS The cause of irritable bowel syndrome is not completely understood. There are possible factors like genetics and prior adverse life experiences (e.g., infection, trauma) that can predispose someone to get IBS. The symptoms appear to result from disturbances in colonic motility (muscle con-

tractions) and increased sensitivity to food, gas, or stool in the bowel. Finally, there is a tendency for the bowel to be overly reactive to various factors, which can amplify or bring about the symptoms. Examples include eating, stress, emotional arousal, GI infections, menstrual period or gaseous distension. n 1976, Margaret and Dan Duckhorn, along with a number of investors, started Duckhorn Winery, with the first production in 1978 being 800 cases of Merlot and 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon. Over the years until 2007, Dan not only vastly improved the quality and quantityof the wines, but also added the following: Decoy; Migration; Goldeneye and Paraduxx — all now with their own wineries He also added enough estate properties in Napa Valley and Anderson Valley to assure a continuous supply of the best estate fruit possible. Dan is already one of the legends of the California wine industry, with his persistent and successful work on branding one of the great names in California winedom, but also in his roles as a Director of The Wine Institute, former President of the Napa Valley Vintners’ Association, past Chair of the Napa Valley Wine Auction and as a primary instigator of the Premier Napa Valley Trade Barrel Auction. In 2007, Margaret and Dan sold a majority interest in the winery to GI Partners, a private equity firm in California and London, for an estimated $250,000,000, making, among other things, 80 investor families very happy. A General Description of the Wines Decoy — There are seven wines in the Decoy stable: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Decoy Red Wine. Although considered super-premium, this line is the introduction to the Duckhorn Wine Company. The prices range from $20 to $25, and all provide delicious drinking and great value. Goldeneye — After years of searching for the perfect spot for Pinot Noir, the Duckhorns found what they sought in the Anderson Valley — vineyards “that could express varietal purity and an intimate sense of place.” From the first Goldeneye Anderson Valley Pinot Noir in the ’90s, the stable has burgeoned dramatically in quality and quantity to an additional seven all-Anderson Valley Pinot Noirs: Confluence Vineyard; Confluence Lower Bench; Confluence Hillside; The Narrows vineyard; Split Rail vineyard; Gowan Creek Vineyard; and Ten Degrees. The prices run from $55 to $115, with most around $80. All are world-class renditions of Pinot Noir. Paraduxx — The first vintage of Paraduxx that I tasted — possibly in the mid-’90s — was a blend of mostly Zinfandel with some Cabernet Sauvignon, and I remember not being too impressed. It seems like every year, Paraduxx has improved. Today, the original Paraduxx is vastly improved, and sells for around $40 a bottle. I have recently noticed a monumental change. Paraduxx now makes a Richter Creek Red Wine, Howell Mountain Mountain Red Wine, Atlas Peak Red Wine, Winemaker Series Red Wine, Proprietary Red Wine and an X2 Red Wine in addition to the M Blend and the Z Blend! The prices range from $40 for the M and Z Blends to $95 for the X2 Red. Three are $80: Rector Creek; Howell Mountain; and Atlas Peak. I have tasted them all. Some are limited, but all are fabulous! Duckhorn Merlot — The original Napa Valley Merlot now has five sister wines — all Napa Valley: Atlas Peak; Rector Creek Vineyard; Carneros; Stout Vineyard; and Three Palms Vineyard. The

NAPA Valley Merlot is $54, and the rest are in the $70 to $95 range. Once again, world-class Merlots, and all great values. I once served the least expensive of these blind with a $250 Saint-Emilion (primarily Merlot) from a great vintage, and three out of five tasters preferred the Duckhorn and one had them at a tie. And to make it a realistic comparison, the Saint-Emilion had three additional years of age and was from a great vintage. Duckhorn Cabernet Sauvignon —From the original 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978, another enormous and successful undertaking has given us an additional seven otherworldly Cabernets priced at between $72 and $135 — the latter for Duckhorn’s Discussion. Most are in the $95 price range: Rector Creek Vineyard; Three Palms Vineyard Rutherford; Howell Mountain; and Monitor Lodge Vineyard. Fabulous ultra-premium Cabernets, and like the entire Duckhorn line, luscious drinking and an easy choice for birthday and Christmas presents. When I first visited the California wine country as a wine writer in 1977, most of the winemakers of great wines were in their early 60s — Andre Tchelistcheff, the most famous of all, was 77, and Robert Mondavi, Joe Heitz, Louis Martini, Warren Winiarski and others were in their early 60s. A recent phenomena of young winemakers making some of the best wines on the planet is highlighted at Duckhorn, with the average age of the winemakers at the five pillars of the Duckhorn dynasty being about 34! I can’t imagine any advancement by Duckhorn over the next nine years that could possibly equal what has transpired since the GI Partners purchase nine years ago, but if I had to bet on it, I’d place my bet on them, along with Alex Ryan, Renée Ary (Duckhorn’s incredibly impressive but understated winemaker), her five sister winery winemakers and J. P. Alviso, the talented Duckhorn Vineyard manager, to find a way! I believe that Duckhorn is possibly the best winery in the world in the 250,000 t0 500,000 case range! l

‘Lend-a-Book/Give-a-Book’ Program Comes to Katy/Fulshear Firethorne launches first-ever Little Free Library

irethorne resident Meg Glenn is a former English teacher whose life-long passion for instilling the love of reading books into the minds of children has opened a new chapter in her life. Though she officially retired from the Katy ISD classroom in 2013, she now dedicates herself to placing books in the hands of avid young readers as the founder and steward of two Firethorne Little Free Libraries, outposts of an international movement to share literacy on a neighborhood basis. “When I learned about the Little Free Library, a free neighborhood ‘lend-abook/give-a-book’ program, I thought this would be a good link to education and reading in our own community,” explained Glenn. After extensive research, she presented a proposal to the Firethorne homeowner’s association board to fund a Free Little Library. “The board agreed to fund two of these libraries and there is talk of opening a third library for adults,” added the former educator, whose 21-year career included teaching reading and English on the elementary, middle school and high school levels. Firethorne is the first master-planned community in the Katy/Fulshear area to house a Little Free Library. Its two Little Free Libraries offer 50 titles – hard and softbound - for children from birth through mid-

dle school. Open on the honor system 24/7, the mini- libraries are located by the main playground next to the Firethorne Community Center. As the registered steward, Glenn is responsible for the books being “safe, available, age appropriate and dry. The buck stops here,” said Glenn, a Firethorne homeowner since 2010. The idea behind the Firethorne Little Free Library came to Glenn after she learned how her high school friend established a Little Free Library as a memorial tribute to her late mother in her Nashville, Tennessee suburb. Firethorne’s new libraries are officially registered and featured on the nonprofit organization’s website map. One Firethorne neighbor stated in the Free Little Library guest book, “With family visiting from Chicago, we really enjoyed finding the little library. We read ‘What Makes a Monet a Monet’ and ‘A Joyful Noise.’ It was so much fun to read poetry with two voices.” Titles include classics by Dr. Suess, Maurice Sendak, Sandra Boynton, Eric Carle as well as Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon in English and Spanish. More advanced readers will enjoy novels like Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo and The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine

Now there are more than 36,000 Little Free Libraries around the world. Meet the Janczaks at the opportunity to return to Jim’s roots. Jim says he enjoys how Katy has “the hustle and bustle of a busy city suburb but somehow maintains its small-town flair.” Crystal appreciates the rich history of the region, noting “Where our house is, they used to run cattle.” Jim first taught at Memorial Parkway Junior High and then at Taylor High School, and at different times coached baseball, softball, football, basketball and tennis. He moved to his current position at Morton Ranch High School as a teacher and head baseball coach in 2004, the school’s inaugural year, later adding PE department chair to his credentials. After several years of staying home to take care of their daughters, Jaime and Christina, and then working as a pre-school teacher, Crystal was hired by Katy ISD to help open Morton Ranch Junior High. She later joined Jim at Morton Ranch High School, where she worked as campus/principal’s secretary before she left to help open Tompkins High School.

“I always knew I wanted to be involved with baseball, and I always knew I wanted to help young people.” – Jim Janczak In addition to resuming her career, Crystal also sought to become more involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo calf scramble, the event with which her father had been involved. For this event, 4H and FFA participants go into the arena at NRG to catch calves. The youths that catch receive a certificate to purchase a calf to raise for the coming year, and are invited back the following year to show their steers and heifers for the chance to win prizes and awards. Greeters are responsible for meeting the scramblers after they catch, serving as mentors to the youths throughout the year, and running the Progress show and Houston Livestock shows for the scramblers the following year. An Accomplished Pair Jim achieved his 100th victory as a head baseball coach in 2015. He has served as regional director for the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, and

is currently vice president of membership for the Houston Area Baseball Coaches Association. His most fulfilling achievements, however, were not accomplished on the athletic fields, but rather in the classroom. “I am proud of the fact that I have won Teacher of the Year twice at two different campuses: in 2002 at Taylor High School and in 2011 at Morton Ranch High School. I consider that a tremendous honor,” he says. Jim’s passion for coaching isn’t fueled solely by his desire to win on the baseball diamond — it is also rooted in his aspiration to make a difference in the lives of youth. “I always knew I wanted to be involved with baseball, and I always knew I wanted to help young people,” he explains. “Therefore, I think the two of them became a natural fit.” Crystal believes that Jim is where he was meant to be. She says, “He is an amazing and patient teacher and coach. He will go the extra mile for any student or player.” Crystal has also achieved great success in

her work with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. She has held several leadership roles on the calf scramble greeters committee and is the first woman to hold the position as chairman on any of the calf scramble committees. She says that through her work with the rodeo, she has “been lucky to meet astronauts, generals, President and Mrs. Bush, Red Duke, and a lot of amazing people over the years.” She takes pride in the fact that, along the way, she has also positively impacted, as both mentor and role model, the lives of many young people. A New Generation Jim and Crystal are pleased to have Jaime and her husband Cody, both Katy High School graduates, and Christina, a Morton Ranch High School graduate, living and pursuing their careers in Katy now that they are all finished with college. They also are excited that Jaime and Cody are expecting their first child, a boy, in May. “I foresee lots of baseball and football in his future,” Crystal says happily. l

icole Brende and Jan-Oliver Schmidt are living proof that blind dates really do work. They were introduced by mutual friends during a “chaperoned” dinner at UP restaurant in Highland Village and have been together ever since. Nicole studied broadcast journalism at Southern Methodist University and is active in the SMU Houston alumni chapter. Prior to her career in real estate, Nicole was a television host and producer for 10 years. Her programs included Hot On! Homes for KPRC Local 2, Designing America on HDNet and Designing Texas. Jan-Oliver is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and Huron University College in Canada, earning an Honors BA degree in philosophy/economics. He is senior vice president of Stahlschmidt Incorporated. The happy couple tied the knot on Oct. 3, 2015 at The Country Club in Pepper Pike in Gates Mills, Ohio. They originally planned an outdoor wedding at Jan-Oliver’s brother’s historic Tudor estate, but hurricane Joachim swept through Ohio. Thank heavens they had a back-up plan!

First Solo Date After a month of group get-togethers, Jan-Oliver invited Nicole on their first solo date at Kiran’s. He had no idea if she liked Indian cuisine, but the gamble paid off. They dined four hours, nearly ordering the whole menu! The restaurant became the future venue for their engagement party of 150 guests.

Courtship The couple, dubbed “The JaNic” by a close friend, love antiquing together and embarked on road trips to Brenham and San Antonio. They visited family in California and Ohio and enjoyed adventurous travels to Puerto Vallarta, Hawaii and Spain. They spent a week yachting to the British Virgin Islands with a captain, cook and plenty of the famous local “Pain Killer” tropical drinks.

Proposal Nicole and Jan-Oliver became officially engaged on Jan. 3, 2015 on Maui. Jan-Oliver had carefully pre-planned their last morning in paradise and opened one remaining bottle of Veuve Cliquot on the beach. As he popped the champagne, a rainbow, which he of course had ordered from Mother Nature, appeared over the water. Holding Nicole’s champagne flute, he asked her to take a photo of the rainbow while his remaining free hand attempted to extract an engagement ring from his backpack. It took several tries, but finally Jan-Oliver was able to drop the ring into his beloved’s champagne flute. A surprisingly intense swell of bubbles camouflaged the diamonds, so Nicole noticed neither the sparkly addition to her glass nor the volcanic eruption taking place. To draw her attention to the ring, JanOliver told his bride-to-be that a bug had just flown into her glass. At last he had her attention, but by now was somewhat flustered and forgot the words to his eloquent proposal. Improvising on bended knee, he asked, “Can you tolerate me for the rest of your life?” Luckily, Nicole answered in the affirmative.

Engagement The engagement lasted nine months to the day and involved to trips to Cleveland, Ohio for wedding planning. A bachelorette party weekend in San Francisco at The Ritz Carlton Hotel enabled the bride and her friends to spend one day in Napa and Russian River valleys for private wine tastings. The bachelor party took place over a week on board a 46foot Catamaran sailboat in the British Virgin Islands hosted by the groom’s best man.

The Wedding The aftermath of Hurricane Joaquin caused the wedding to be moved indoors at The Country Club, but the bride and groom were cheered by the saying “Rain brings good luck and fertility.” A string trio and a singer performed a rendition of Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars as the bride came down the aisle with her father. The couple customized their ceremony with help of their officiant and literally “tied the knot” with a fisherman’s knot of black and white satin cords. The exit song for the newly married couple was Marry You by Bruno Mars. Bridal Party: Rev. Darwin L. Huartson officiated; he had previously married the bride’s father and stepmother, as well as the bride’s twin brother. Parents of the bride, Vicki and Al Brende and Ann Bayless, were in attendance with parents of the groom, Hans-Joachim Schmidt and Sigrid E. Schmidt. Michelle Brende Evrard (the bride’s sister) and Lori Lemon-Geshay served as maids of honor. Bridesmaids included Lyndsey McCall Rice and Laura Elizabeth Cernock. Flower girls Hadden Charlotte Brinegarm, Shaylie Lynn Rice, and Chloe Chanel Elise Evrard (the bride’s niece) were absolutely adorable. The groom’s brothers Uwe Thomas Schmidt and Kai-Roger Schmidt served as best men. Groomsmen included Willard Chace Brinegar and Richard Alan Brende (the bride’s twin brother). Quentin Leo Evrard served as ring bearer. Attire: The bride’s Pronovias Atelier ivory all-lace gown featured an open-back floating flower applique and train. Her custom extra length lace veil was crowned with a Swarovski crystal tiara. She wore emerald green Manolo Blahnik pumps with a crystal brooch, and a second pair of shoes by Joyce Echols of white snake skin and gold barbed wire

stilettos. Bridesmaids wore Alvina Valenta strapless black dresses with peplum and trains, paired with Enzo Angiolini sandals in black satin with crystals. The groom wore a custom tuxedo with bowtie, cummerbund and Mont Blanc cufflinks, as well as green socks to amuse his bride and maintain the color scheme of the wedding. Groomsmen wore tuxes in classic black and white and were gifted with Mont Blanc cufflinks. Floral and Décor: Floral arrangements in all shades of white filled the venue. The altar was decorated with birch trees and pomanders hanging from the branches. The bridal bouquet featured a selection of roses, stephanotis and subtle crystals. The bridesmaids’ bouquets were arranged with white mini calla lilies interspersed with camellia foliage. The groom wore a cluster of white roses and stephanotis with silver brunia and grey foliage. The ring bearer’s sign heralded “Jan-Oliver, here comes the love of your life.” Wedding ceremony signs said “Pick a seat, not a side.”

Top Wedding Moments: A wardrobe mix-up occurred while the groom and groomsmen were getting ready in the locker room of The Country Club. The bride’s twin brother inadvertently wore the groom’s custom-fitted jacket, while the groom wore the groomsman’s tux jacket for all the festivities. Since the bride’s brother is 6’4” and the groom is shorter, his sleeves were too short and the groom’s were a bit too long. No one realized this until the bride and groom were packing at the Ritz-Carlton a few days later!

The Reception The classically elegant black tie affair was themed in black, white, gold and emerald green (the bride’s birthstone). A huge black and white umbrella sat center stage on the dance floor to symbolize a rainy wedding day. The dance floor was checkered in black and white in a nod to the bride’s mother’s love of MacKenzie-Childs designs. The couple performed a custom choreographed number to Michael Buble’s Feeling Good, thanks to dance lessons in Houston at Beginner’s Only. Father and daughter danced to Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. Bridesmaids danced to Girls Just Want To Have Fun by Cindi Lauper; groomsmen to Who Let The Dogs Out by Baha Men. Music of the 1980s/90s entertained partygoers, as well as glo sticks, glo sunglasses, a smoke machine, and props such as frames and mustaches, lips and hats. Floral and Décor: The exterior was lit with coach lamps and decorated with

hydrangea, white roses, alegrian ivy and camelia. Tables were adorned with a floral palette of hydrangea, phalaenopsis, roses, dahlias and mini calla lilies, complete with candles, gold votives, gold chargers and black napkins. As a special touch, tables were named after the couple’s beloved pets (displayed in gold frames), including the sweetheart table with a gold sequin table topper and photo of the bride’s Persian cat, Chako. Custom lighting changed from blue to green to pink and amber to create the ultimate party atmosphere, and guests lounged on white couches. A bar sign stated “No good story started with a salad.” The guest book was an ensemble of polaroid guest selfies. Favors of JaNic Bacon Habenero vodka were a huge hit, as well as mini bottles of bubbly with green ribbon holding black/white straws, JaNic Rocks chocolates and a popcorn bar. Cake: A stunning four-tiered white cake included different flavors of butter cream, peanut butter cup with chocolate and hazelnut with raspberry swirl, all previously taste-tested and approved by the bride’s father! Top Reception Moment: A speech by both of the couple’s fathers included such entertaining banter that the first dance didn’t occur until 11 p.m.! The Exit: “The JaNic” exited to sparklers and a black Rolls Royce. The night ended in the concierge private level at the Ritz Carlton Cleveland hotel with friends and family celebrating over a night cap “recap” before the newlyweds retired to their suite. l

Representatives from Typhoon Texas discussed details about the Katy area waterpark which is set to officially open on May 28. Located adjacent to Katy Mills Mall on roughly 40 acres, the newest entertainment option in the Katy area is sure to excite. According to its developers, including Katy Area EDC member Keith Dalton, the park will feature slides and fun for the whole family while boasting the cleanest water in Texas. ‹Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

At the Katy Area Economic Development Council's General Assembly meeting on Feb. 16, representatives from Typhoon Texas and Wild West Brewfest, were on hand to discuss their respective spring and summer attractions.

Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus, Houston’s first community hospital designed, built and equipped exclusively for children, has proudly served the west Houston area for five years. Since opening their doors in 2011, West Campus has provided more than

750,000 patient encounters in one of the fastest growing pediatric communities. Upholding Texas Children’s mission of providing the highest-quality health care for children, West Campus is continuing to expand their services to meet the growing needs of their patients. Some of the most recent highlights include the opening of the state-of-the-art special isolation unit, which is the only one of its kind in Texas and the Southwest region, and the activation of the hospital’s helipad that allows all helicopter services in southeast Texas to bring patients directly to West Campus. ‹Katy ISD Board of Trustees Approves Namesakes for Three New Campuses The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved the namesakes for three new campuses opening up in fall 2017, as recommended by a school naming selection committee. The committee proposed names for Elementary School No.38, located in the Cinco Northwest Subdivision; Elementary School No. 39, located in the Ventana Lakes Subdivision; and Junior High No. 14, located within the Hawks Landing Subdivision. The committee carefully deliberated on the namesake recommendations submitted by community members and heard the feedback from attendees at the public forum on Feb. 9. Elementary No. 38, located at 27602 Westridge Creek Land, will be named after retired educator MayDell Jenks. Elementary No. 39, located at 4535 East Ventana Parkway, will be named after former teacher Catherine (Gigi) Bethke and Junior High No. 14, located at 26721 Hawks Prairie Boulevard, will be named after former educators James and Sharon Tays. ‹Cross Creek Ranch Wins ULI People’s Choice Award The Houston District Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) has announced Cross Creek Ranch as its People’s Choice Award winner in the 2016 Development of Distinction Awards. Cross Creek Ranch was one of eight finalists in the annual awards program, which recognizes developments and public open spaces that exemplify best practices in design, construction, economic viability, health places, marketing and management. In awarding recipients, ULI said, “Cross Creek Ranch creates an enduring community by prioritizing core values associated with a sustainable environment, engaged people, vibrant culture, endless learning and interconnectedness. Together, the result is a distinct development that has experienced sustained and recognizable economic, social and environmental success within the Houston region and beyond.” A 3,200-acre master-planned community in Fulshear, Cross Creek Ranch is designed around following environmentally friendly, sustainable practices. Among the highlights is Flewellen Creek, winding approximately 150 acres through the development. Much of the creek has been restored, creating a balanced ecosystem for wildlife and a natural backdrop for amenities. A 50-acre pond in Cross Creek Ranch also has been developed as a bird and wildlife habitat, as well as a groundwater filtering system. Finalists in three categories of the Development of Distinction Award — forprofit, not-for-profit and urban green space — were announced in October. An international jury of real estate experts toured each project late last year to select the winners.

SMOKE ALARM BLITZ dEEMEd A HUGE SUCCESS The Harris County Emergency Services District 48 Fire Department (HCESD 48), the American Red Cross, Kingsland Baptist Church and Katy Area Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members all went door-to-door Saturday to alert residents in the Memorial Parkway community about the importance of having working smoke alarms and to install new detectors in homes where needed — as part of the Home Fire Prevention Campaign. HCESD 48 firefighters and volunteers from the Texas Gulf Coast Red Cross chapter, Kingsland Baptist Church and Katy Area CERT divided into several teams on separate routes through select sections of the Memorial Parkway community. Some groups installed the smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors while other groups moved ahead of them to identify houses who wanted to have their systems checked. By the end of the day, 172 smoke alarms had been installed in over 60 homes previously lacking proper smoke alarm systems. Also, thanks to Kingsland Baptist Church donating additional funds and a partnership with Ace Hardware – Cinco Ranch, HCESD 48 was able to install 45 CO detectors. Jeffrey Stuart of the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast said spreading awareness about fire alarms can save a lot of lives. “The goal for the Home Fire Prevention Campaign, launched by the Red Cross, is to install 5,000 smoke alarms in the Texas Gulf Coast Region by June and overall to help reduce fire deaths by 25 percent by 2019.” HCESD 48 noticed over the last several months an increase in residential fires where residents were barely escaping their homes because they didn’t have working smoke alarms. “This observation led the department to believe that there were probably several homes in the area that didn’t have working smoke alarms installed,” said Fire Chief Jeff Hevey. “This is a big concern.” Meanwhile, HCESD 48 Commissioner Derrick Hughes noted that talking to unprepared residents after a tragedy is clearly ineffective. “Typically, we meet people on their worst day — when a disaster has already happened,” Hughes said. “This blitz gives the department an opportunity to get out and meet our neighbors and educate them on ways to keep them from having a disaster.” Residents in the area were very receptive in letting the volunteers and the fire department into their homes to check their smoke alarms and install new ones. Many residents were unaware that they had outdated smoke alarms. The Smoke Alarm Blitz is just one of many efforts the HCESD 48 Fire Department is planning to increase safety awareness in the Katy area. Lt. Simon Vandyk said a top priority is to bring more programs like the blitz to the area within the coming year. “We are always looking for opportunities like the American Red Cross’ Home Fire Prevention Campaign. I’ve been working in the Katy area as a volunteer firefighter for years, and I’m extremely excited to see that the HCESD 48 commissioners are very supportive in helping us to move toward becoming a fire department of the future, by allowing us to execute and implement safety programs like this.” To learn more information about smoke alarm safety, visit esd48fire.org. KaTy’S WooDlanDS EliTE WinS naTional ChaMPionShiP TiTlE Katy spirit and cheer really showed the weekend of Feb. 21 when the Katy location of Woodlands Elite Level 5 - Small Sr. Restricted Co-Ed A cheer squad won first place champions in the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) nationals held in Dallas. The squad motto, “The Work is Worth it!” spoke volumes as they went against 10 other squads from across the United States. NCA weekend usually brings the close to the cheerleading season, but this group was invited to participate in the Summit, held at the ESPN World of Sports in Orlando. This group of boys and girls is coached by Calvin Beene and owen Cox.

They will also participate in master classes, leadership sessions and other development opportunities. Of these, 48 were Gold Key recipients and 45 were Silver Key recipients. Gold Key artworks have advanced to national judging, where renowned artists, art professionals and arts educators review Gold Key works from across the country and select national medalists. Each year around 300,000 works of art and writing are submitted for local competitions held around the U.S. Art is judged on originality, technical skill and emergence of a personal vision or voice. Approximately 5 to 7 percent are selected for Gold Keys and

John Paul ii SChool nEWS This spring, the St. John Paul II Saints (SJPII) are busier than ever, whether they are creating prize-winning artwork, competing in robotics competitions or helping families afford a Catholic education, St. John Paul II Catholic School is shining. SJPII artists had an extremely successful showing this year at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Student Art Contest. For the fifth year in a row, SPJII received only secondplace ribbons or better on their entries. This year, they earned more “Finalist” ribbons, (higher than first-place blue ribbon), than the sum total for the prior 12 years. “I am extremely proud of our St. John Paul II art students as they continue to exceed way beyond expectations in the statistical performance of ribbon awards at this prestigious art event,” said Ronda Stieber, art teacher at SJPII. First Lego League AWEBOTS and RoboKids, robotics teams from the school’s “Stretch” program, which offers challenging opportunities for exceptional students, competed in the league’s Gold Championship on Feb. 20. The fourth grade AWEBOTS earned a personal best, scoring 15th out of 73 teams in Robot Games. The middle school RoboKids won trophies for first place in Robot Performance and second in Robot Programming. In addition to their supportive coaches and mentors, five SJPII alumni cheered on their former team while volunteering at the event. During Catholic Schools Week, the students were busy celebrating Catholic educa-

tion with a pep rally, a teacher/student volleyball game, a Religion Jeopardy game, and a talent show. A volunteer mass and breakfast was held in thanksgiving for the many people who help make SJPII successful. School tours and an open house rounded out the week. More than a hundred prospective families came to see the school and learned about the school’s commitment to affordable education by an offer of not only sibling discounts, but also employee discounts for all Archdiocesan employees.

FulShEaR hiGh ChaRGERS aDD loGo To ThEiR iDEnTiTy - Fulshear High School Principal Daniel Ward waited until noon, Feb. 19, before revealing the logo for the newest Lamar CISD high school— Fulshear High School, Home of the Chargers. "We wanted something different from the other District mascots," Ward said. "I think we've hit the mark." The new logo will set an identity for the campuses, he said, noting that Leaman Junior High will have the same mascot. "From grades six through 12, these kids will be Chargers," Ward said. "We are one. Once a Charger, always a Charger." The logo, featuring a fierce horse, with a body that tails off into a lightning bolt, was designed by a graphic artists. Ward, Leaman Principal Mike Semmler, oschler Flemming, Fulshear High's athletic coordinator and Socorro Torres, Ward's administrative assistant, took part in the process of finalizing the logo. "This is actually the fifth or sixth version," he said. "But this one really pops!" Ward said spirit wear will be available in May.
