SINGING FOR JOY…

Sugar Land City Council discusses proposed charter changes By Subhrata Barot For The Star

Local choir brings smiles to Fort Bend County residents By Deborah Rowe For The Star Fort Bend Boys Choir of Texas organization has a lot to offer audiences. The Fort Bend Boys Choir of Texas organization plays a delightful and varied repertoire that consists of patriotic, classical, folk-tune, religious and whimsical genres. William Adams founded the choir in 1982 with 42 boys in one choir. Now there are five choirs with 175 boys that make up the Fort Bend Boys Choir organization that reflect different skill levels based on talent and age. “Boys begin at 6 years of age and stay in the treble

choir until their voice changes. After performing in the other training, town and tour choirs in the organization then they can join the alumni choir, Cantabile,” Adams said. The choirs perform locally for weddings, civic events, grand openings, parties, conventions, churches and concert series, Adams explained. “They also sing the national anthem at sporting events, for local dignitaries, fundraising event campaigns and frequently with the Houston Symphony.” He said. They perform at these events nationally as well as internationally. They have toured 22 states as well as Texas and have made nine international concert tours.

The Sugar Land City Council held a workshop on Tuesday to discuss proposed amendments to the city charter that could make citizens’ opportunities to petition in protest a more difficult task. The main proposed amendment is a change to the number of petition signatures required for recall petitions for a referendum. Currently, the charter requires signatures required for a referendum is 30 percent of the number of voters who voted in the last election. A proposed change would require 15 percent of ALL registered voters in the city, before the city would be legally required to consider it. The Fort Bend Boys Choir has been entertaining local residents “Our recent referendum since 1982. Fort Bend ISD is inviting the public to share its input on the proposed 2016-17 FBISD Calendar, which will be voted upon at the board’s Jan. 19 meeting. The public has until tomorrow to comment and share input on the calendar, which includes an additional 20 minutes per day of added instruction at the elementary, middle and high school levels. The new calendar was formed due to state legislation which updated the Texas Education Code to require 75,600 minutes of instruction, rather than 180 days. FBISD currently has 73,500 minutes of instruction – which is 2,100 less than the state will require beginning next year. The proposed schedule would add one more instructional school day to the calendar. If the board doesn’t pass it, the district would have to make up bad weather days. The district formed the calendar with input from administrators, teachers, parents and other stakeholders. House Bill 2610 also allows districts flexibility to add minutes to the school day to compensate for instruction lost due to school closures caused by bad weather, without having to add make-up days.

KEN BRYANT GOP Primary Candidate

MARY WALKER GOP Primary Candidate

Ken Bryant and Mary Walker don’t expect a contentious Republican primary in State House District 27. But whomever wins the March 1 primary plans on convincing the overwhelming Democratic district that it must move in a conservative direction. Three-term incumbent Rep. Ron Reynolds (D-Missouri City) will face three opponents in the Democratic primary – Angelique Bartholomew,

Steve Brown and Chris Henderson. Reynolds, the Democratic House Whip, has won the last three general elections by 67, 69 and 85 percent, respectively. District 27 has never elected a Republican, so Bryant and Walker – both Missouri City residents – face long odds. Bryant, an attorney who owns a law practice in Richmond, served one term on the Fort Bend ISD board of trustees and lost to former District 27 Rep. Dora Olivo (D-Rosenberg), 60.8 to 39.2 in the 2006 District 27 General Election.

“District 27 needs a person who will cross the aisle,” Bryant said. “Olivo and Reynolds have not been effective. I will try to persuade people to understand what’s needed for our area.” A Houston native and lifelong Republican, Bryant considers himself “a fiscal conservative” and believes that Republicans have done a better job of encouraging “personal responsibility” and limiting unnecessary spending.

Civil Servant of the Week: Drabek Elementary's Michele Rose By Michael Sudhalter

Michele Rose loves watching her students discover their artistic side. “I love when a kid holds a paint brush and thinks its magic,” said Rose, the Art Teacher at Drabek Elementary in Sugar Land. “I teach the kids to follow directions and think through problems. They’re learning how to be creative – a 21st Century skill they’ll need forever. As long as the students try, that’s good in my book.” Elementary school is the only time when all students will have Art classes, so Rose tries to introduce as many different forms of Art as possible from painting, clay, ceramics and more. Some of the Art is on iPads, and the district recently purchased iPads for all of its art teachers. In addition to teaching classes, Rose started an after-school Art Club for her students.

Libraries announce Family Reading Club this winter The popularity of Fort Bend County Libraries’ Summer Reading Clubs for children, teens, and adults inspired the library system to add a similar program for families during the winter season. The Family Reading Club will begin on Sunday, January 24, and will continue for six weeks through March 5, at all branches in the Fort Bend County library system. This six-week program is designed to encourage families to read, learn, and have fun together. Families participate in the program by reading books and completing optional “challenges” that can be done at home. All Fort Bend County families are eligible to

participate. “The best way to help children learn new words and to build a larger vocabulary is to talk and read with them,” says Susan King, Coordinator of Youth Services for the library system. “Children hear more new words when you read books to them.” Families that complete the program by reading 36 books or for 6 hours – 6 books per week or for 60 minutes per week – are eligible to receive a book bag for the family, and will have their name entered into a drawing for a $50 dining gift card, donated by the Friends of the Library. The drawing for the gift card will take place on March 7, and one winning family will be selected from each branch library.

challenged Republican incumbent Milton Fox in the District 93 (West Houston) election. Walker, a real estate agent and retired Alief ISD bus driver, said she became more conservative over the years and identifies with the Republican Party. Walker said that support for law enforcement will be a major part of her campaign. She agrees with Reynolds on his support and participation in passing the Body Camera Bill, which requires law enforcement officers to wear body cameras on their uniforms. She would also like to see more emphasis on school bus safety. During her time with Alief ISD, she was the elected representative to speak on behalf of 300 bus drivers at school board meetings. Walker is also a strong proponent of strict drug laws and criticized President Barack Obama for advocating the release of non-violent drug offenders from prison. “I know Reynolds is popular, but we’ll see what happens between now and the election,” Walker said. “I will try to get law enforcement and realtors to back my campaign.”

He said the major issues facing the district include the need for better schools, reducing crime and increasing economic development. “The (economic development) train may not be there yet, but we have to at least lay the tracks,” Bryant said. Bryant, who said he knows and gets along with Reynolds personally and acknowledges his popularity in the district, said the incumbent candidate may not be able to accomplish much for the district due to ongoing legal issues. In November, Reynolds was convicted on five misdemeanor counts of Barratry in Montgomery County and sentenced to the maximum one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Reynolds has posted bond and is free, pending an appeal of the case. The results of the appeal won’t likely be revealed by the primary election but could be revealed by the general election on Nov. 8. Walker will be running for office for the first time in 37 years. In 1979, Walker – then a Democrat – unsuccessfully

A single registration is required for each participating family. An adult (parent or guardian) is asked to register the family online by going to the library’s website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “Family Reading Club Sign-Up” image, which will become available January 24. Families may also register at any of the libraries in the Fort Bend County library system. Upon registering, families will then have their own online page on which to record their books or reading time. There is no charge to join the Family Reading Club. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends of the Library organizations that support the county library system. For more information, call the library system’s Public Information Office at 281633-4734, or the library branch nearest you.

the OPINION

Why the last election on the ballot really matters… In just a matter of hours, we’ve gone from Christmas Lights and New Year’s Party Hats to campaign signs and political chatter with the primaries on March 1 – now less than two months away. And while we’ve always been inundated with the national storylines of “Trump vs. Cruz” and “Clinton vs. Sanders’, it’s important to remember how important the local elections are for our community. One of the local elections that can often be overlooked is that of County Party Chairperson, because it’s largely a heavy-lifting, behind-the-scenes, no glory type of job. It’s also the last contest on the ballot. By that point, voters are often ready to turn in their ballot and head to Starbucks

or the local dog park. And this March, both incumbents Mike Gibson (Republican) and Don Bankston (Democratic) face challenges in their respective re-election bids from Bill Michie (Republican) and Cynthia Ginyard (Democratic), respectively. It’s difficult to underestimate the importance of a Party Chairperson. An appropriate comparison would be to that of a professional sports franchise’s General Manager role. Sure, more Houstonians know J.J. Watt’s name than they do Rick Smith’s, but the latter is the reason why the former is in Space City. And Smith has shaped the entire 53-player roster. Everyone knows the names “Ted Cruz” and “Hillary Clinton”, but quick,

TOO MANY MATTRESS STORES I do feel we do have too many mattress stores right now. It is kind of like the old joke “how many people does it take to screw in a light bulb?” Well ask yourself “how many mattress stores do you need to sell mattresses?” Every time you look another one is opening. I still cry but not as often when I see David struggle to walk or do things that most folks take for granted. I know that one day, I wont be here to take care of him and he will be at the will of the State and that worries me a lot. Thank you for helping to heal that misconception. Don and I lost our amazing son, Chip, to cancer. It was 10 years ago but it was yesterday. I can promise you that you will never forget your baby girl, she will always be your child, and that your writing about it did her proud. I know you fear that losing her so early in her life will make it seem as if she was never real to the rest of the world or capable of giving such joy and such sorrow. She was a powerful little girl. With your permission, Don and I would like to place a children’s book in the Fort Bend County library with her name in it to honor the joy she brought you and your family. Thank you again for your courage and your story-telling skills.

With all due respect to the Democrats, we’ll start with the Republican Party Chair election because it’s the Party that’s dominated Fort Bend politics for more than 20 years now. Gibson, the GOP Party Chairman for the past four years, faces a challenge from the right in Michie, although both candidates have strong conservative credentials. Gibson brags about “Straight Ticket” voting increasing by 42 percent. As a journalist, I like to see voters educate themselves on all of the candidates and choose the best person, but for a party chair, there’s

nothing better than straight ticket voting. Gibson has kept the County deep red and ensured that the GOP has made inroads in the fast-growing Katy portion of the County and has not taken for granted that the area’s suburban demographics would translate into Republican votes. Both Gibson and Michie have said the party needs to do a better effort at promoting its conservative message on the eastern side of the County (State House District 27, County Precinct 2).

At the County level, Party Chairperson is responsible for recruiting candidates, fundraising for the county party, hiring and managing employees, precinct chairs, volunteers and interns and coordinating with the state and national party leaders. The Fort Bend Democratic Party is similar to the modern-day Dallas Cowboys. They’ve had glory days, but it’s been a while. The Fort Bend Republican Party recalls the early 1990s era Dallas Cowboys. They currently having a winning brand, but as the mid 1990s Cowboys proved, success can be fragile. I’m not going to endorse a party chair in either election, but I think it’s important for voters to be informed of these respective elections.

Q: A:

Are hearing aids really better than they used to be?

For decades, hearing aid technology was limited to standard analog circuitry, similar to a simple transistor radio. Now hearing systems include Terry Snook miniaturized microprocessor technolAuD, FAAA ogy. These new digital hearing aids have revolutionized the way hearing aids perform. These hearing aids use custom programmed circuits that react automatically to the sounds around you. The circuits can be programmed to provide more amplification of soft sounds and less amplification of loud sounds. By doing this, there is less need to adjust the volume control. A number of the aids have data logging as well, so when the patient returns after wearing the aids, the audiologist can read the aids and evaluate how they have been processing sounds in different environments. The audiologist can then adjust the aids based on the data logging, thus allowing the aids to be adjusted even more precisely for each patient’s needs. Please call us if you would like an appointment and a demonstration of these exciting advancements in technology. We look forward to helping you hear even better!

If the insurance companies estimate is lower than the repair shop’s, do I have to pay the difference? According to state law, your insurance carrier must Chuck Charlton negotiate in good faith with your choice of shop to arrive at an agreed price for repairs. It is the role of the professional collision Repair specialist to be an advocate for their customer by working with an insurer to document and identify physical damage. You are only responsible for your deductible. When additional damage becomes evident as the repair progresses, a claim can be reopened and a supplemental payment issued. In fact, most large collision repairs require at least one supplement to the original estimate. An estimate is exactly that - an estimate. May God Bless our Men and Women in the Military

Former Missouri City council member Gary to run this spring Missouri City resident Cynthia L. Gary, a former two-term Missouri City council member and one-term Fort Bend ISD trustee, announced her candidacy for City Council At-Large Position 2. She will be challenging first term incumbent Chris Preston in May. At Large candidates are elected by the entire Missouri City electorate. “I want to work for the people of Missouri City and be part of moving Missouri City forward,” Gary said. “I like Chris. I really do. This isn’t about running against anyone else. It’s about service.” Gary, however, said she chose to challenge Preston instead of At-Large Position 1 council member Jerry Wyatt, due to Wyatt’s experience, and she questioned whether Preston’s recent enrollment in law school would become an issue. “He won’t be able to dedicate as much time to his constitu-

H OPINION, FROM PG 4 Michie, a former GOP Precinct Chair, said the party must do a better job connecting with all of the County GOP volunteers. “It is essential to reconnect with our County Republican volunteers who have been neglected during this chairman’s term,” Michie said. The Democrats, on the other hand, have an uphill battle – regardless of who’s elected chair. Bankston, a Richmond attorney, is more dialed into the State Democratic Party than anyone. He serves on the State Democratic Executive Committee, and his first stint as Democratic Party Chair was 1992-94 – when most county officeholders had “Ds” after their names. Ginyard, a Sugar Land

Rodeo investment in HCC students prepares next generation of first responders The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) is helping educate the next generation of first responders at Houston Community College (HCC) with a generous gift. At the December meeting of the HCC Board of Trustees, rodeo officials presented the HCC Foundation with a $146,000 check to support programs at the HCC Public Safety & Automotive Technology Center of Excellence and the expansion of technical programs. Of that total, $116,000 will support the Public Safety Institute (PSI) for the 2015/2016 academic year. • $45,000 will be used to purchase equipment for the Law Enforcement Academy. • $71,000 will support the Emergency Telecommunications Center to provide training to meet industry demand for 911 dispatchers. “As a result of the contributions, we are seeing a significant difference in the success of our students — in police, fire, and EMS,” said Dr. Margaret Ford Fisher, HCC Northeast College president. “Our students pass the state exams with over 95% pass rate. Our students are being placed in jobs, in many instances before they complete their degrees. So we are truly grateful. You are making a significant difference in the lives of our students.” Also included in the $146,000 is a $30,000 grant that was used to establish a Technical Education Scholarship to help HCC students earn welding certifications. It is an area Rodeo officials say they want to expand in the future. “Those technical skills are truly what drives our economy. We realize there is a shortage of skilled labor,” said Joel Cowley, HLSR president and CEO. “We are really excited to get the program up and off the ground.” Of the students who attend HCC, 66 have received HLSR scholarships totaling $671,000 and since 2009, grants to HCC have totaled $564,000. “This generous gift from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is an investment in our students and our economy,” said Shawn Taylor, HCC Foundation Board president. “It is timely and very important because this year to date, the HCC Foundation has awarded over $800,000 in scholarships which goes a long way for an education at HCC.”

Last year, she was appointed to 19-member Missouri City’s Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC) by first-term District C Council Member Anthony Maroulis. The committee helps city council, and the Planning and Zoning Commission, city staff and a consultant team in reviewing the city’s policy and goals. “CPAC will work with city entities to create a plan that will address Capital Improvements and I believe (City Manager) Anthony Snipes

Speech Language Professional and former County Democratic Party Secretary, is challenging Bankston, who raised $160,000 for the Party in 2014. She’s running on a platform of change and saying that Bankston hasn’t engaged prospective voters – something he strongly denies. Bankston has referred to Ginyard as “divisive” and “someone that has no ability to do this job…and can’t raise a dime.” Ginyard has acknowledged that she lacks experience in fundraising, and if elected, she’d like to see Bankston stay on board in a fundraising capacity. Not possible, said Bankston. If that happens, Bankston said he’ll raise money for individual candidates in Fort Bend but won’t be involved with the County Party. Bankston said he took responsibility for the Democratic Party’s low turnout and electoral losses in 2014, but noted that factors outside his control (gerrymandering, a Republican Wave nationally) were at play.

will work diligently to address Capital Improvement issues as well,” Gary said. In recent months, there has been discussion about how Missouri City can improve facilities for its police and fire

departments. “Because the construction and/or expansion of Public Safety facilities are impacted by city growth, I’m sure it will be a topic of discussion at future meetings,” Gary said.

Antibiotics forAppendix Inflammation

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association antibiotics may be an effective alternative to surgery in the treatment of uncomplicated appendicitis. Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. The appendix is an area of tissue that hangs off the intestines. The exact role of the appendix is unknown to scientists. When the appendix becomes infected and inflamed, it can cause severe pain, rupture, and may require removal by surgery. Symptoms of appendicitis include severe pain in the right side of the abdomen, nausea, and vomiting. Researchers reviewed cases of over one hundred individuals who had mild appendicitis and pain for forty-eight hours or less. Thirty-seven of the 100 received intravenous antibiotics for one day, followed by a ten day course of oral antibiotic without surgical removal of the appendix. Ninety-five percent reported that they felt better and did not require surgery. Only two required appendix removal up to thirty days after the antibiotic treatment.

at its 2016 Gala for their part in its founding back in 1999. The Smithers, who together made their home in Sugar Land for almost 40 years, started their work long before the SLCAF was organized as a non-profit, and they worked tirelessly to preserve the Lakeview Auditorium. Don Smithers formerly served Sugar Land as a city councilmember between 1997 to 2003, and later between 2009 to 2013, both times contributing to the growth of the city in his official and volunteering capacity. He also served as Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Sugar Land during both stints on city council. The Smithers’ fundraising work with the SLCAF began with May Fest at Lakeview Elementary school and the popular Ice Cream Socials that further led them to continue their steadfast involvement with the fundraising gala. And now, the Big Wigs themed, 2016 Founders Ball at Safari Texas celebrating them for their devotion is in the making. SLCAF promotes the arts and successfully renovated and restored the city’s oldest public space, the Sugar Land Auditorium. It represents a historic landmark in old Sugar Land in a neighborhood where employees of the Imperial Sugar Factory and their families lived, and to this day the origin of the community is still known as “The Hill,” adjacent to the Imperial Redevelopment District. Based on the progress and continuing development underway with planned retail, residential, entertainment and office sites, it appears that this area may again be a destination. H PROPOSED, FROM PG 1

RECOMMENDATIONS City Spokesman Doug Adolph said the charter commission made eight recommendations. In October, City Council suggested moving forward with the following six. • Changing council terms from two years to three years • City council members will communicate through the city manager’s office rather than directly to employees regarding day to day operations of the city • Equalizing the petition signature requirements to 15 percent as well as basing percentage on registered voters for all categories for consistency • Updating the severability clause • Clarifying definitions of council member(s) and city council • Clarifying that city council has power to regulate all city owned property

13-45 to review the operations of city government to determine whether revisions in the Charter should be made. Though not directly related to the general public, the proposed Interference with Administration section (2.10) is also baffling to her group. It states that “the city council and it’s members shall deal with city officers and employees who are subject to the direction and supervision of the city manager solely through the city manager, and neither the council nor its members shall give orders to any such officer or employee, either publicly or privately.” In other words, the proposed change states that to communicate with city employees, council members must go through the city manager’s office. It is still unclear The Star why this particular change has been proposed.

She also added that in the City of Houston, the amount of signatures needed for petitions is 10 percent of the number of voters who voted in the Mayoral Election. In most other cities, it is a percentage of the last election, not the entire registered voting population. Despite delays from the Planning & Zoning Commission regarding the public hearing to consider the elimination of recent updates to the City’s Development Code and the addition of a provision limiting multi-family in planned development districts to no more than 200 units, Miller said her group plans to submit the petition. The amendments were recommended by the 2013 Charter Commission, which according to City documents, was created from Resolution

“I don’t know why they feel the need to change that, or what is driving that change,” Miller said. “It concerns me.” Another agenda item is the approval of the release of 214 acres of the City’s Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) upon the property’s acceptance to Richmond’s ETJ. The property is o the south of FM 2759 and west of Crabb River Road. According to city documents, staff recognized that it is difficult to plan for land uses on the ETJ properties south of FM 2759, because properties have unusual shapes and sizes. A number of property owners in the area have expressed interest in being part of Richmond’s ETJ.

SPORTS True to Toro... Sugar Land’s Schneider is Fort Bend’s Biggest Texans Fan By Michael Sudhalter msudhalter @ fortbendstar.com

Before every Houston Texans game, Sugar Land resident Wendy Schneider makes sure that she’s wearing her lucky Texans shirt and holding a JJ Watt doll. “JJ is a beast, and he commands respect,” Schneider said. “Off the field, he’s very much into his charity work and an allaround good guy.” But Schneider – nominated and selected as Fort Bend’s Biggest Texans Fan – has followed the team long before Watt came to town in 2011. As the Texans Biggest Fan in Fort Bend, she’ll be presented a Watt jersey. “I started watching the team in 2002 – I didn’t want to be a Cowboys fan after the Oilers left,” Schneider said. Like many of her fellow Houstonians, Schneider endured some lean years before the Tex-

ans finally clinched their first playoff spot in 2011. “At the beginning, we had some really good players, but they weren’t cohesive as a team,” Schneider said. Schneider, who works as an Energy Lender for Amegy Bank (the Official Bank of the Houston Texans) considers Watt and former Texans Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels to be among her favorite players. “I was heartbroken and sad when Andre left for Indianapolis,” Schneider said. Following the Texans has been a cathartic part of Schneider’s life at times. Her best friend and fellow Texans fan, Lisa, was diagnosed with Cancer a few years ago. Lisa is now cancer-free. The friends made it a point to meet and watch the game every Sunday to take their mind off Lisa’s Chemotherapy. “That was something fun to do during the hard times,” Sch-

neider said. Schneider likes other sports, but not like Texans Football. She made an exception and watched softball last May. To be clear, it was the JJ Watt Celebrity Classic at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. And she was ecstatic after Watt signed her doll. She hopes to continue going to the Celebrity Classic as it moves to Minute Maid Park in Houston. Looking forward to Saturday’s AFC Wild Card Playoff Game, Schneider said it could be Space City’s playoff revenge against Kansas City. Last October, the Astros were on the brink of eliminating the Kansas City Royals in the American League playoffs. The Royals staged a comeback, and went on to win their first World Series in 30 years. Schneider’s prediction for Saturday’s showdown? Houston 17, Kansas City 14.

TEXAS BOWL HOMECOMING

Texas Tech senior running back DeAndre Washington, a Marshall High graduate, finished his collegiate career with a 118-yard all-purpose performance – including seven receptions for 81 yards – in a 56-27 loss to LSU in the Texas Bowl on Dec. 29. An NFL prospect, Washington compiled 2,595 rushing yards and 713 receiving yards over the past two seasons. (Photo by Michael Sudhalter)

Elkins Knights Baseball Hall of Fame weekend 12th Annual Elkins Baseball Hall of Fame Banquet January 22, 2016, 6:30 PM Sugar Creek Country Club The Elkins Knights Baseball Program will be inducting three new members into their Hall of Fame. Dan Tuskowski (1998), Duke Dykeman (2007), and Kevin Max (1997) are this year’s honorees at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 at the Sugar Land Country Club. Event will include a buffet style dinner, silent auction, and live auction. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students and must be purchased in advance at www. K nightsBaseballClub.com Ticket sales end at 5 PM on January 21st. Carpenter Field on the campus of Elkins High School (7007 Knights Court, Missouri City TX 77459) will host the ceremony for the formal naming of the baseball field at Elkins High at 1 p.m. on Jan. 23. With the approval to formally name the baseball field at Elkins High School “Rick Carpenter Field” approved by the FBISD Board of Trustees last May, the formal field dedication ceremony will take place prior to the Alumni Game on January 23. Numerous Elkins alums will be returning to their home field for this event and to participate in the game. The Elkins Baseball Program welcomes the Missouri City & Sugar Land

community to attend. There will be no admittance charge for this event. “Having our field named after Coach Carpenter is an obviously well-deserved honor,” EHS head baseball coach Tyler Porter said. “Coach Carpenter

not only started the program and led it to national recognition; he more importantly impacted the lives of countless young men. The impact he had on the kids he coached is still reverberating in Fort Bend today.”

Hightower graduate Bralon Addison declares for NFL Draft University of Oregon wide receiver Bralon Addison, a Hightower High graduate who led the Hurricanes to a second place finish in the UIL Class 5A Football Championships, has declared for the NFL Draft after earning All-Pac 12 honors this season. “I came here as a kid who wanted nothing more than to play football at a high level,” Addison said in a prepared statement. “In the process, so much more has happened. I think I have become more mature, a better person and a better Christian and most importantly a better man. I just wanted nothing more than to thank everyone that has been a positive influence in my life academically and athletically during my time here at Oregon: my professors, this entire staff, the fans and everyone else involved. Addison, a redshirt junior who had a year of eligibility remaining, caught 58 passes for 775 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Ducks, who finished 9-4 this season. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Missouri City native, who played quarterback in high school, returned to his home state for his final collegiate game. He caught five passes for 29 yards in the Ducks’ 47-41 triple overtime loss to TCU last Saturday in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio. The Ducks led 31-0 at halftime, before UO quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. left the game due to injury. Addison had originally committed to Texas A&M, but switched to Oregon after the Aggies replaced Mike Sherman with Kevin Sumlin.

FOOT FACTS by Dr. Eric Tepper

BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

PRETTY FEET

Foot “facelifts” are touted in beauty magazines as a way of surgically enhancing the appearance of feet to accommodate highfashion footwear. It is wise to note that the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) does not support the practice of foot surgery for purely cosmetic purposes. There are inherent risks in all types of surgery including infection, temporary or permanent nerve damage, and scarring. The AOFAS recommends that surgical procedures on the foot be undertaken solely for the correction of deformities, reduction of pain, or improvement in range of motion. Shortening a long second toe so that it looks better in sandals or having excess fat removed to wear narrower shoes are considered insufficient reasons for surgical intervention. Unfortunately, today’s lifestyles often place excessive or unusual demands on your feet. In order to stay mobile, professional care of your feet is a true necessity. Our team of specialists and staff believe that informed patients are better equipped to make decisions regarding their health and well-being. We’re located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. Don’t take your feet for granted - call us for an appointment. PH: 281-980-3668. HINT: Change the shoe style to fit the foot rather than change the foot to fit the shoe.

Spanish Honor Society students. The celebration included the traditional “Las Mañanitas” and other special songs to serenade Our Lady of Guadalupe. We enjoyed Mariachi music and we were very honored with the participation of the Knights of Columbus. In December 1531, Mary appeared to Juan Diego, a peasant and farmer, on Mexico’s Tepeyac Hill, and told him to visit his bishop and request that a temple be built on the site of her appearance. After the bishop doubting Juan Diego’s tale denied his request, the peasant next brought him flowers at the orders of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Upon opening his tilma in front of the bishop Juan Diego found an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on his cloak. Students shared the story beautifully and reverently, highlighting the devotion to Our Lady and our Blessed Mother’s message at Tepeyac. It was a wonderful celebration that brought together students, faculty, staff, parents and community friends.
