Stafford City Council commends the Fort Bend Subregional Plan Karen Daniels

At last week's Stafford City Council meeting, H-GAC and Traffic Engineers. Inc gave a presentation on their findings and vision plan for the Subregional Planning Initiative (SPI) that is aimed at strengthening and growing Fort Bend County as the

premier location in Texas to live, connect, prosper, learn, and enjoy quality of life. Although six other cities are involved in the report, the presentation focused on the study as it pertains to the City of Stafford. Between 1980 and 2010, the population in Stafford grew 4.5% per year, while the

On the west, the boundary is FM 521 and roughly by the city limits on the south and east, according to an agreement entered between the City of Arcola and Fort Bend County. Fort Bend County is the grantee of the funds and is charged with the responsibility to comply with the terms and conditions about the use of the grant monies. Because the “city is not familiar with such federal laws, rules, and regulations relating to the expenditure” of the community development block grant government funds,

Cheers and chants are still buzzing in the community as the First Annual Strike Out Autism Family Fun Day gained three victories during one event on April 21. Hope for Three hit a grand slam by hosting more than 400 members of the autism community to an exciting family day of exclusive events, food and fun. Fans and supporters of Fort Bend County was empowered and inspired to see the ability in the disability of autism. The event, a collaborative effort between Hope for Three, Sugar Land Skeeters, Judge Bob Hebert, Mayors and elected officials of Fort Bend County is the largest of its kind held in the community to commemorate April as Autism Awareness Month. Children and their volunteer buddies join together for on field play reminding others to “Be the Difference”. See related article on page 7.

Shaping the face of Stafford with new design in building By Karen Daniels

One of the newest buildings in the City of Stafford is hard to miss if you're driving down Highway 90 due to its unique design: Apex Cheer Gym. The design is so intriguing that as a driver you have to be careful not to take your eyes away from the road for too long. The concept and design of this building is from architect J. Thomas Marrow, president of Tomorrow Planning, Inc. He explained, "When we were first getting started on their design, owners Roque Baecker and Craig Jones, along with Apex' managers and staff, challenged Tomorrow Planning Inc. to design a facility and facade that reflected the

dynamic energy that was soon to be happening inside." Of all the cities in Texas, Mr. Marrow says his favorite to work with is Stafford. In addition to telling his clients about the city's policy for no property taxes, working with the Building Director and Zoning Administrator has always been efficient and professional. "Of all of the places we've designed and managed projects, our favorite place to work is in the City of Stafford. They work with us to help accomplish our clients goals, while still adhering to codes and city ordinances. I just think its incredible and unique the way the Stafford Mayor and City Council have created a different kind of environment."

Tomorrow Planning has designed 14 facilities in Stafford with an additional 19 in Fort Bend County, not including numerous finish-outs and remodels. With over two-hundred plus designs in the State of Texas, SHAPING, continued on page 10

FOOT FACTS by Dr. Eric Tepper BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS CAUTION ADVISED

Since it’s not easy to view one’s own feet and any subtle changes that may occur over time, melanoma of the foot can be overlooked when it is at an early stage. Melanoma is a form of cancer that can be treated if caught early on. Difficulty identifying it may result from lesions that grow on the soles and within the nail. The most common type is superficial spreading melanoma (SSM). If detected in its early stages, the optimal treatment is surgical removal of the melanoma. This excising of the surface layer and underlying tissue has a great success rate for eradicating the cancer. If the condition is more advanced, additional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be necessary. The next time you clip your toenails, take a closer look at the rest of your feet. The extra 60 seconds could save your life. Experience our expertise with customized care and surgical and non-surgical approaches to help you heal with a treatment plan made just for you. Feet are vulnerable and prone to complaints, but most problems don’t just disappear on their own. We can treat them effectively with medication, surgery, or other, less invasive procedures such as exercise. Don’t take your feet for granted. Call us at 281-980-3668. We’re located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. Don't take your feet for granted - call us for an appointment. Make your next step a comfortable one - call us for an appointment. Problem solved.....A few weeks ago I was griping about not being able to access the county’s web site because I had a Mac, and the county’s web site didn’t like it. I complained to Annie Elliott, the county’s district clerk, who was in possession of the files I wanted to view on line. Finally someone from her office wrote me a curt note that said to the effect--too bad if you have a Mac. Either get a different computer or drive over here to use ours. About that point Dianne Wilson happened to call me and I unloaded on her and accused the district clerk (Dianne is the COUNTY clerk) of having a cozy relationship with the vendor. Dianne informed me that the vendor was the same for her office and all the JP offices in addition to the constables. In other words, the entire county’s web site--judicial that is-was in the power of this vendor. However, Dianne was sure there must be a solution. Later in the afternoon some young man from the county’s IT department called me and said he had a Mac and he had figured out how to use it to view all the county’s stuff on line. It was a simple matter of holding down a certain key. So for five years I hadn’t been holding down the right key. I didn’t get the young man’s name or if I did and wrote it down, now I can’t find it. Anyway, I wanted to inform you that I take back a lot of what I said that week. Arrogance, thy name is

Sugar Land.......I think it’s a bit arrogant for Sugar Land to install a whole bunch of red light cameras the very week a group of its tax-paying citizens presented the city with a valid petition to remove what they already had. Over the months, we’ve had letters from people who think the red light cameras are a good thing and decrease accidents. We’ve also heard from people who think they are wrong. Don’t get me wrong. I’m for certain cameras. If not for cameras, we would not have caught the Boston Marathon bombers so quickly, and they were planning on doing much more harm. England uses a lot of cameras, and their crime rate is lower for it. So I guess I believe in cam-

eras in the first place. After all, if you are not doing anything bad, why worry about cameras? Now that I think about it, one can extrapolate cameras everywhere and red light cameras also. If you believe in one, you almost have to believe in the other. However I can’t help but believe that the city does it to make money. But according to Assistant City Manager Steve Griffin, Sugar Land makes about $250,000 per year on all its red light cameras. For the city of Sugar Land, that’s chicken feed. Hardly worth the money if that is what they are doing it for. The company that provides the cameras and also the expenses associated with sending out the notices and collecting the money gets 50% of the

“Aliefians” Wanted!! By LeaAnne Klentzman

This is a all call for former Alief residents. The long running Alief Homecoming is struggling to find and invite all former Alief residents to a community homecoming on Sunday May 19, 2013. Betty Youngblood Stelzer has been heading up the Alief Homecoming celebrated at Youens Elementary for the last 20 years. This year she has asked the media to help her find former "Aliefians" who have moved from the immediate area. Ms. Setlzer said, “The Alief oldtimers are scheduled to gather for their 64th consecutive year to share in a barbeque lunch and hear about the good old days in Alief, Texas. These Homecomings often become family reunions. Last year we had 14 from one family and hope to break that record this year.” Lt. Colonel Ervin Rees and Betty Youngblood Stelzer have served as President and Secretary/Treasurer for the last 20 consecutive years. Seltzer provided a brief history saying, “Alief was first settled in 1861 and was known as Dairy, Texas. In 1896 it had a population of 25 and the community had one two-room school. In 1917 the community was renamed "Alief" in honor of

Alief Ozella Magee who was the country’s first postmistress; she is buried in the Alief Cemetery at Bellaire and Dairy Ashford. In 1911 the first Alief school was constructed, that building fell to condemnation in 1939.” Today Alief ISD has 46 schools, many of which are named in memory of original settlers to the area. In the late 1970’s Alief was annexed by the city of Houston but the school district and remains. In stark contrast to a population of 25 in 1896; 2009 found Alief with a population in excess of 100,000. For many years Mrs. Mora Boone attended on behalf of her late husband James Boone, an early Alief ISD superintendent. Mrs. Boone celebrated with the group up until she was 104 years old in 2006. Sunday, May 19, 2013 will be another moment for fun and fellowship for longtime residents as they continue the 64th consecutive Homecoming which will be held at the Youens Elementary School, 12141 High Star in Alief. money and the city gets the other 50%. Of the city’s 50%, the state of Texas gets half of that. So the city gets to keep about 1/4th of the revenue. The city now has 7 red light cameras. Sometimes I don’t remember....I forget just how far right a lot of people in Fort Bend really are. Someone told me just the other day that an acquaintance of theirs still called President Obama the “N” word. And a school board member told me that I would be surprised at how many people in Fort Bend thought we should arm teachers. Are they crazy? More guns just means more chances for an accident. Why our own sheriff shot himself in the foot demonstrating gun safety as did the gun safety expert in Stafford who did it during a demonstration. I love it that some people think the government (read Obama) is secretly buying up all the bullets. I hope they are. Last I heard, one had to travel to Wharton to buy bullets as there were none within a 25 mile radius of Houston and that includes Fort Bend. I remember Chris Rock suggested during his comedy act that if we made bullets $100 each, we might be able to curtail some gun violence. I’m beginning to think something Chris Rock said in jest might be just the thing. It’s getting pretty bad when Chris Rock makes more sense than anyone else. Yes, I know. I’m an unrepentant liberal. The trivial $1,000 app fee requires $500 upfront while the remaining $500 can be made in installments. The loophole:

The Secy may exempt defined classes of individuals entirely from the fee. “Tough luck,” the govt says to the millions who have paid $50K or $100K to become U.S. citizens the honest way. Further, the Secy deems what is “required” information, but has the “sole

Cuts of Meat Have you noticed some strange names when shopping for beef or pork lately? There is a group heading up the Uniform Retail Meat Identification Standards (URMIS) who claim that people are confused by the old meat cut names such as pork chops, rump roast or port butt. URMIS thinks people will be less confused by names such as Porterhouse chops, Ribeye

chops or New York chops. You might also find such new names as Denver roast or Boston roast. Well that clears the confusion right up! Being a native Houstonian, I might better understand what a Houston roast is, but even that’s a stretch! Naming a cut of meat from where it comes from on the cow or pig makes perfect sense. Furthermore, calling it by the breed such as Angus, OUR SERVICES:

After enactment, the Secy shall broadly disseminate in languages spoken by aliens—not English—to TV, radio, print and social media the procedures, terms and conditions and eligibility requirements. The cost? None given. Prosecutions in the Tucson section are to increase to (a laughable) 210/day while illegal immigrant criminals are now defined as ones who have been tried and found guilty. Guess where the first cuts will be made. States will be reimbursed

for criminal cases that the U.S. Attorneys turn down. Reality check: The DOJ will turn down cases so that it can sue states and bar them from prosecuting illegal alien criminals. Equipment/technology: The deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles, 24-hour surveillance (drones), along with a double fence “if necessary,” while still not addressing tunnels— which we know are being dug. Further, we are leaving $35 Billion in equipment in Afghanistan—that we already paid for—instead of bringing it home to secure our borders. A two-year grant program will be implemented to

is equally descriptive of the quality. How a pork butt roast is associated with the name Boston is anybody’s guess. So whose idea was it to rename meat cuts after major cities? Aren’t most cattle ranchers and pig farmers from the country? Perhaps this is not a move toward clearing up confusion among the American people as much as it is to appeal to the growing middle class in Mexico who is buying more American products including Texas beef. The people from Mexico may not recognize

the American names for parts of a beef or pork carcass, but they would recognize the names of American cities. So there you have it, the culprit behind the confusion. On another note, Allyson Huston, owner of Russo’s Coal Fired Kitchen participated in a dessert contest at the capitol in Austin last week for Missouri City day with her Pantone Bread Pudding. It was a labor of love as she soaked her own dried fruit for the Pantone, which she also made from scratch and dried in the coal fired oven before adding a plethora of other ingredients. Having tasted it myself, it is truly a delectable experience. If you have a favorite recipe you would like to share, please submit to denise@fortbendstar. com for consideration.

You think this “self-funded” amoral train wreck has secured our borders and this issue is forever solved while powers and Constitutional responsibilities haven’t been forever stripped away? “11 milllion,” you say? How about 40 million. Obamacare…let’s see how soon we see our doctor. For comments, contact Barbara J. Carlson at Barbara@ FortBendBusinessJournal.com.

Treatment of Nerve-Related Pain

Neuropathy is a generalized term for a condition that occurs when nerves are damaged. Typically, neuropathy is a result of injury, nerve disease, or improper care of long-lasting diseases that can cause nerve damage. High blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, alcohol abuse, AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), and carpal tunnel syndrome are a few conditions that may increase the chances for nerve damage. Some types of chemotherapy medicines may also cause neuropathy. Symptoms of neuropathy include tingling or burning sensations in one or both parts of the body, numbness, or complete loss of feeling. While there is no cure for neuropathy, treatment includes proper management of chronic disease and reducing the symptoms of neuropathic pain. Gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica) are anti-seizure medications that help reduce this type of pain. Topiramate (Topamax) is an anticonvulsant medicine that may lessen neuropathy. Tricyclic antidepressants (Desipramine, Amitriptyline) have helped some people with neuropathic pain, but many people cannot tolerate the bothersome side effects. The addition of NSAIDs (Aleve, Advil) and Tramadol (Ultram) may also help lessen nerve-related pain.

Isensee Family calls for Sugar Land to improve response to mental health crises Dear Editor, On April 7, 2013 Sean D. Isensee was shot and killed by a Sugar Police officer who was responding along with many other officers to a call for help regarding a mental health crisis. No one else was injured at the scene. The facts of the case have not all come to light. However, it is clear that the results could have been much better. If things had been handled differently, Sean could be alive today. In response to his death his family and other concerned citizens are calling for an independent investigation into the events and root causes leading to his death. In addition, his family and

friends have formed the Isensee Foundation for Safe Police Response. The mission of the foundation is to “provide law enforcement and professionals with training, techniques and equipment that will increase their ability to de-escalate mental health crises.” The foundation will focus initially on efforts to increase the ability of law enforcement and professionals in Sugar Land to respond safely and effectively to mental health crises. The Foundation is sponsoring an “awakening walk” on May 7 from the Isensee residence in Sugar Land to Sugar Land City Plaza. The date is 30 days after Sean’s death and coincides with a city council meeting. The foundation is

Victory for Strike Out Autism Cheers and chants are still buzzing in the community as the First Annual Strike Out Autism Family Fun Day gained three victories during one event on April 21. Hope for Three hit a grand slam by hosting more than 400 members of the autism community to an exciting family day of exclusive events, food and fun. The Sugar Land Skeeters went neck and neck with the Long Island Ducks, but with a huge hit out of the park, they prevailed with a 2 to 1 win. And thousands of fans and supporters of Fort Bend County was empowered and inspired to see the ability in the disability of autism. The event, a collaborative effort between Hope for Three, Sugar Land Skeeters, Judge Bob Hebert, Mayors and elected officials of Fort Bend County is the largest of its kind held in the community to commemorate April as Autism Awareness Month. "This was a huge undertaking and we are elated about the positive impact it has made in our community, especially our families living with autism", said Darla Farmer, Hope for Three Founder. Families attending the event arrived to the cheering welcome of more than 300 volunteers who paired up with children on the autism spectrum and their siblings, while their parents or caretaker had enjoyed a social hour. A parade followed, along with the inaugural Strike Out Autism first pitch by Collin Montgomery, whose triplet sisters are on the spectrum and the signing of the National Anthem by 12 year old Avery Najarian, who also has autism. Judge Hebert then took to the field and proclaimed April as Autism Awareness Month. Each County Mayor and/ or city representative stood alongside the Judge in support and recognition of autism awareness and acceptance in the community. "The time I spent hearing the stories and interacting with children and families affected by the disorder helped me realize just how many people are impacted”, said Mayor Vincent Morales, Rosenberg. "We are lucky to have organizations such as Blessed Be Hope For Three as community partners providing awareness, education, support, and resources not just at events like Strike Out Autism, but each and every day of the year.” Skeeters players also

Riverstone to host American Society of Interior Designers Tour May 11-27 A select group of Houston’s top interior designers are combining their creative might to design a home that will both enchant and inspire during this year’s American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Show Home Tour, May 11-27 in Riverstone. The 6,682-square-foot Vista Fontana, an Italian villa at 22 Ivy Bend, will be open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. The home also will be open 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Memorial Day, May 27. Admission is $12 in advance or $15 at the door. The home’s architecture reflects a Tuscan influence and its name — which means “fountain view” — references the lake scenes visible from nearly every room.

More than a dozen designers from the ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter are showcasing their talents throughout the home. Among the award-winning professional designers working on the home are Kelly Gale Amen, Sharon Staley, Donna Vining and Diana Walker, all known for their innovative design and creative styling. Proceeds from the event benefit the ASID Foundation, an organization that supports interior design research, education and scholarships. For more information on ASID and to purchase tickets, visit www.asidtgcc.org. presents a salute to the troops The HAR-Fort Bend Realtor Networking Meeting on May 16, 2013 will recognize HAR members and family members who have served in the various branches of the military. Members are asked to bring someone in their family who is a veteran or is presently serving our country. The monthly Networking meetings are held at Sweetwater Country Club the third Thursday of each month with networking beginning at 11:30 AM and the program beginning at 12 Noon. The program planned is going to be completely focusing on recognition of service members, past and present. A color guard will present the colors prior to the pledge and our guests of honor will be asked to stand as the song from their branch of the service is played. Recognizing the dedication of members who have or are currently serving in the military gives us pause to their sacrifice and dedication to our nation and our freedoms. How fortunate we are in our homeland to have individuals who forgo their personal agenda to preserve, guard and protect our country every day. Their commitment should not be taken for granted. The Advertisers for this meeting are Trendmaker Homes, RiverPark West and Newland Communities, Cinco Ranch. Door prizes will be awarded following

the speaker’s presentation of the Story Behind TAPS and includes the very moving significance of the folding of the American flag. If you are interested in attending, please contact Theresa@alliedhomewarranty. com. Leave your name and phone number and the name of your guest. Sugar Land accepting applications through State Hwy. 36-A County to oversee funds & water May 20 for Land Use Advisory Committee Coalition you’re system upgrades in Arcola individuals for the committee. During the approximate 18-month project, LUAC members will attend committee meetings, "Land Use Forum" educational sessions, public meetings and possibly workshops with the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council. These meetings will generally be held during weekday evenings and will be scheduled in coordination with selected LUAC members after their appointment. The City is accepting volunteer applications for the Land Use Advisory Committee through May 20. The application and a description of the process is available at www. sugarlandtx.gov/landuseplan.

Police volunteers partnering with Skeeters, Harley Davidson for Memorial Ride on May 18 Sugar Land's 5th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ride on May 18 will end this year with a Parade of Chrome at Constellation Field for "First Responders Night." The memorial ride continues a local tradition of honoring men and women who routinely place themselves in harm's way to protect and serve. Each of the past three years, the community has joined police officers for a motorcycle procession that honors National Police Week. This year's event is being organized by the Sugar Land Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, Republic Harley Davidson and the Sugar Land Skeeters. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world plan events honoring those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice, including former SLPD Sgt. Ron Slocket who died in the line of duty on the night of July 4, 1987. "It's important that we all remember and honor the memories of our law enforcement family," said Police Chief Doug Brinkley. "That's what we'll be doing on May 18 - making sure their contributions are never

forgotten and recognizing the hard work and sacrifice of those who serve on a daily basis." Sugar Land's event on May 18 begins with ride registration at Republic Harley Davidson, 12707 Southwest Freeway, from 2-4 p.m. The ride is $35 for a single rider or $45 for doubles, and the cost includes a ticket to the game. Fort Bend County's armored response and rescue vehicle will be on public display during registration. Known simply as the Bearcat, the Fort Bend Regional SWAT Team utilizes the vehicle for deployments throughout the county. Following a "Blessing of the Bikes" by SLPD's chaplain, the Bearcat will join a procession of police and civilian riders as they embark for Constellation Field at 4:05 p.m. The Parade

of Chrome at the stadium is scheduled for 5:15 p.m., with the game set to follow at 6:05 p.m. Other festivities at the stadium will include a presentation of the colors by Sugar Land's police honor guard and a bagpipe rendition of Amazing Grace by Sugar Land Fire Lt. Robert Rogers. The tradition of playing bagpipes for fallen police and firefighters is a time-honored tradition of more than 150 years. Sponsorship opportunities ranging from $250 to $1,000 will be available for the event to benefit CPAAA's ongoing fund-raising efforts to benefit SLPD's crime prevention activities. The group's goal this year is to raise $10,000. For more information about the event, e-mail paradeofchrome@slcpaaa.org.

This new association founded by the three counties, according to the action taken during a commissioner’s court meeting of April 23, will advocate improvements to Highway 36 with the intention to create a new route, Hwy. 36-A. The new road will go through Fort Bend and Waller counties instead of Austin County. State Highway 36, which is owned and maintained by the state through the Texas Department of Transportation, runs from Freeport to Abilene, which is the end or terminus of the highway extended there in 1939. reconstruction on the road is due to increased traffic (39,000 vehicles per day) on West Airport and changes in traffic throughput requirements. The start date of the project will begin sometime in 2014. New features to enhance traffic flow will include the elimination of the traffic calming devices (bumps) and esthetics to the area will help Meadows Place rejuvenate the city and make it even more appealing to the many people and families moving to Fort Bend County.

COSTCO’s construction clearly underway At the start of the year there was no real visible sign of major activity at the intersection of U.S. 59 and University Boulevard, but today…voila…the COSTCO in Sugar Land looks like it may be gearing up for an opening sooner than we think. This specific site with the “Coming Soon” banner is between Wescott Avenue, Wallingford Avenue and U.S. 59, information provided

by city spokesperson Doug Adolph. But, if you’re on U.S. 59 headed towards Victoria alongside Telfair on the other side of University Boulevard, you’ll clearly see the massive building along the interstate with a gas station pump area, also under construction. Adolph advises that the $10 million capital investment project creating 150 jobs is expected to be finished in the fall. It seems like just the other day, back in September 2012, the Sugar Land city council held a public hearing for the proposed final development plan to establish the wholesale store on part of the 84-acre site of the Telfair Center Lakefront District. We cannot begin to thank everyone who participated in this wonderful event,” said Manuela Arroyos, CEO, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels. One of the trademarks of the event is every table is decorated by a different organization or group and a winner announced. This year, Lisa Anhaiser owner of Linens by Lisa won for best table decoration.

Shakespeare and Seuss together at Fort Bend Theatre What would happen if you combined Shakespeare’s greatest love story and the fantastic, creative wordplay of Dr. Seuss? Award-winning Fort Bend Theatre’s Action Reaction Troupe is going to find out with The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet. The show will run from May 10 to 19, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm and Sundays at 3pm. This is a “Again, we are thrilled the event was so successful and we are already planning next year’s Mad Hatter and we look forward to seeing everyone there. Thank you to all for making this year's event so success. The elderly in the community are the real beneficiaries since their plates will not go empty,” Arroyos said.

All kids 16 and under are invited. Sugar Land CCA will be providing the rods, reels, bait and refreshments!
