Three Sugar Land attorneys to serve on Sandra Bland investigative committee By Michael Sudhalter msudhalter@ fortbendstar.com

Three of the four attorneys on the Sandra Bland investigative committee are defense attorneys in Sugar Land who previously worked as prosecutors in the Fort Bend District Attorney’s Office. In an effort to provide a transparent investigation,

Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis asked that Sugar Land defense attorney Lewis White join a committee to investigate the Bland case. Mathis has repeatedly said the case will be treated like a Murder investigation. White then requested fellow Sugar Land defense attorneys Chad Dick and Shawn McDonald join the committee, and they accepted. The fourth

member of the committee is Houston defense attorney Darrell Jordan, and White said the committee is looking to add a fifth member. There is no timeline on the completion of their investigation. The committee is a diverse one, since White and Jordan are African-American, while Dick and McDonald are Caucasian. Bland, who had recently ac-

cepted a position at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M, reportedly committed suicide on July 13 in the Waller County Jail in Hempstead, 55 miles northwest of Sugar Land. The Chicago native was driving in Waller County on July 10 when she was pulled over by Department of Public

Missouri City switches trash contract to WCA Left: Richmond resident Reid Williams is an ice hockey enthusiast who began coaching a Sled Hockey team in recent years. The Missouri City council voted to authorize an agreement with WCA Waste Corporation for residential, commercial and municipal solid waste and recyclable materials collection service, effective on Jan. 1. The city previously contracted through Republic Services. WCA was one of eight contractors who put out a bid on Trash services in Missouri (Photos by Michael Sudhalter) City, and their cost is believed to be 41.9 percent cheaper for similar twice-per-week service. WCA was selected because it had the best combination of proposed approach, experience, financial stability and exceptions to contract and financial proposal. Representatives from WCA presented to Council an overview of the company, how the company handles various safety concerns, their approach to public education and how they would implement a transition plan for the City from their previous contract to the new WCA partnership. City-wide recycling is now a viable option, under WCA. The City’s contract would provide a $12.40 per household base rate with an additional 5 percent franchise fee. The City would transition to fully-automated solid waste service under the new contract; WCA representatives said By Michael Sudhalter they would work closely with msudhalter@ fortbendstar.com residents who needed special assistance with the automated trash pick-up, such as elderly or Two Fort Bend County men disabled residents. have helped Paralympic ice hockey players in the Greater Houston area achieve their dreams. show that discussed a program like that in Buffalo and checked around to see if there was anything like this in Houston, and there wasn’t,” said O’Neill, who referees recreational hockey games at the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center and around the Greater Houston area. O’Neill met Richmond resident Reid Williams at the Sugar Land rink and encouraged him to volunteer with StarSkaters, specifically the Sled Hockey program. Williams began to volunteer, and before long, he was hooked. He eventually became the head coach, which is also a volunteer position. “At the end of it, I couldn’t believe the joy in the players’

eyes,” Williams said. “It’s very rewarding. Every week, the payment of seeing what you’re doing and helping out these achievers is unmeasurable. The volunteers are constantly helping. It’s such a good, rewarding thing.” The 25-member team is officially called Texas Sled Hockey, and often includes players from throughout Texas. The team, and StarSkaters, will be honored before a Sugar Land Skeeters game on Aug. 21. Williams coached Rico Roman, who won a gold medal in the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia, and Kyle Huckaby, who won a world championship earlier this year. In the national tournament,

Texas Sled Hockey player Joe Montemayor become the first triple amputee to score a goal in a tournament. Then, went on to score three. Williams was always a hockey enthusiast but didn’t have any experience playing beyond the recreational level. He’s coached Texas Sled Hockey in the nationals for each of the past two seasons. Williams has built a partnership with the Sugar Land Imperials, a junior hockey team that plays its home games at the local rink. A Navy veteran who served in the Persian Gulf War, Williams moved to the Houston area to work as a drummer in a band.

Missouri City at-large council member Jerry Wyatt can’t do anything about improving the U.S. Post Office at 1902 Texas Pkwy., but he’s still going to try. “It’s dirty, and that’s not right,” Wyatt said. “People don’t have a choice when it comes to the Post Office. They’re captives to the Post Office’s business. Even the post office in the older part of Sugar Land looks better than this.” Wyatt, who has lived in Missouri City since the mid 1970s and has served on city council twice since 1981, said the 39-year-old Missouri City Post Office’s lack of quality is concerning. Efforts to reach Missouri City Postmaster Howard Joseph were unsuccessful. Wyatt said he has support from other council members in his efforts to improve the only retail post office in the city limits. “We can’t tell them to do anything — we can only ask,” Wyatt said. “We can’t legislate another governmental entity.” The doors entering the post office were designed to be automatic, but they haven’t worked in approximately 20 years. “I’ve seen people struggle with packages trying to get through the door,” said Wyatt, who contends that the post office isn’t compliant with the

Tradicao proud to be involved in Houston Restaurant Weeks By Michael Sudhalter msudhalter@ fortbendstar.com

When Sugar Land native Melissa Abrantes heard about Houston Restaurant Weeks, she knew it was a special opportunity for Tradicao Brazilian Steakhouse –her family’s restaurant at 12000 Southwest Fwy. in Meadows Place – to

give back to the community. Houston Restaurant Weeks, which started in August and runs through Sept. 7, offers food aficionados the opportunity to try several excellent restaurants at a discounted price. This will be the third year that Tradicao has been involved, said Abrantes, the restaurant’s director of market-

ing. “We had tremendous support the past three years and we have been fortunate to donate over $37,500 or 112,500 meals for the Houston Food Bank.” Abrantes said. “We are hoping to make an even larger donation this year than last!”

Jan. 1 saw the launch of a new ambulance service in Sugar Land and thus far, it has been a success. However, the Sugar Land Fire Department rolled out two drugs last Monday that were not available in the ambulances before. The drugs, Versed and Fentanyl, are both controlled substances - pharmaceuticals that have the potential for abuse or dependence. Versed, a Category IV, medication is used in EMS to control acute epileptic seizures and is also used in hospitals for sedation purposes. Fentanyl is used to treat moderate to severe chronic pain. Although two controlled substances are carried now, they were not physically in the ambulances when the program commenced on Jan. 1. City officials insist that patient care was uncompromised and that they had the appropriate licenses and medications in place for their department protocols when they launched the ambulance service in January. “We had to get our system up and running first,” said Sugar Land Assistant Fire Chief Mario Partida. “You have to have your stations and security in place, then you apply for licensing and request items like controlled substances.” In an email to The Star,

Sugar Land Spokesperson Doug Adolph said the process identified by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Texas Department of Public Safety required an operational ambulance transport service in place prior to issuing the necessary licenses to distribute narcotics. They also knew this well in advance. Adolph also added that the city followed the directions given by both agencies to obtain Distributor and MidLevel Practitioner Licenses as required. Like Partida, Adolph also maintained that Controlled Substances Registrations are not issued to agencies prior to becoming EMS Providers with the Texas Department of State Health Services. Partida added that the delay in rolling out these drugs was a conscience decision by the city. Before rolling out the controlled substances, the Partida said the city ensured that staff was adequately trained; the proper

security measures were in place and did the appropriate testing. “This was a part of the city’s plan,” Partida said. “We wanted to get everything ready and then apply for additional drugs. This is all part of starting a new system.” As for the Sugar Land EMS, Partida and Adolph both say that the service has been very successful. Partida added that they have improved customer service levels and have control over where the locations of their ambulances. Adolph added that the city is providing a higher level of access to emergency medical services and advanced life support since the city launched the ambulance transport system. Prior to the city launching it’s own service, it relied on Fort Bend EMS to provide ambulance care and arrival times were 15 minutes. The average ambulance response times now are just over six minutes.

JOHN HEALEY Fort Bend District Attorney

A federal judge in Houston dismissed a civil lawsuit in U.S. District Court against Fort Bend District Attorney John Healey and Assistant District Attorney Mark Hanna. The plaintiff in the case was Jacob Estrada, a Rosenberg

man who alleges that the District Attorney’s Office’s inaction in bringing forth new evidence/information resulted in him staying in prison unnecessarily. Judge Nancy F. Atlas determined in a “final appealable Order” that there was no wrong-

doing on the parts of Healey and Hanna. Estrada, with the assistance of former Assistant District Attorney (and DA candidate) Michael Elliott, has filed a complaint with the State Bar of Texas against Healey and Hanna. That case is still pending.

the OPINION

Reynolds owes the community an apology

Whether he is innocent or guilty, Reynolds has shown a pattern of putting himself in situations where it can seem almost conclusive that there is wrongdoing on his part. A larger part of the problem is Reynolds’ response to questions about civil suits. When I told him last month that we were reporting the pending civil suits in The Star, Reynolds responded by e-mailing “it has nothing to do with my public office. This is exactly why people don’t run for office.

Advocating for Gun Control Thank you for providing both sides of the gun control issue. All I can say is, poor Mike Gibson. I’ll bet he wished he’d have let the call go to voicemail. Defend the GOP position on guns? You mean, the party that wants drunk college kids to have guns? The party that opposes any restrictions on copkilling, armor-piercing bullets? The party that responded to 20 tiny children being slaughtered by actually expanding gun rights? The party that will trot out a cherry-picked statistic or two yet routinely denies funding to study gun-violence? Or the party that always brings up mental illness in the wake of almost weekly massshootings yet votes against measures that would improve or expand care for the mentally ill? The party that claims that the US Constitution is absolute yet had no problem with the Bush administrations warrantless wiretaps - a clear, direct violation of the 4th Amendment? Or takes the position that “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”, yet votes

against every attempt to keep those “people” from accessing guns? That position? Admirably, Mr. Gibson does present a fact or two, though, predictably they are cherry-picked. With respect to California having stronger than average (which isn’t saying much) gun control yet high murder rates, what’s not mentioned is that California borders Arizona and Nevada, two states with almost non-existent gun control measures - meaning that anyone who can’t get a gun in California can just drive across the border. He also fails to mention that Hawaii, which boasts the lowest gun ownership rate and among the strongest gun laws in the nation, has the lowest gun violence rate of all 50 states. Or that 1995 gun control legislation passed in Connecticut has resulted in a 40% decline in gun-related homicides. And states with some of the most permissive gun laws, such as Mississippi and Alaska, suffer some of the highest rates of gun deaths in the country. States with stronger gun

regulations, like Rhode Island and Massachusetts have 1/5 the gun death rates that Mississippi and Alaska do. If more guns made us safer, the United States would be the safest place in the world. Instead, that designation goes to countries like England and Japan, which took on gun violence with the seriousness it deserves. Then there’s the special case of Australia, which passed strong gun control measures in 1996 in the wake of it’s own mass-shooting tragedy. They had suffered 11 mass-shootings in the ten years before the legislation, and none since. More facts not offered by Mr. Gibson? Women are five times more likely to be killed by an intimate partner when a firearm is present. For every “bad guy” that’s killed by a “good guy”, dozens die due to self-inflicted gunshots, including toddlers. Mr. Gibson also never mentioned that part about militias that’s referenced in the 2nd Amendment, or that in Colonial days most guns were held under lock-

MICHAEL SUDHALTER EDITOR

I thought that we were better than this. This is tabloid stuff and not news. Have a blessed day!” Because he is a public servant, Reynolds is held to a higher standard, and he, more than anyone else, should understand that. He has regularly used the term “selective prosecution”. Well, OK. Then, be even more careful than if you were just some random attorney. The problem is that Reynolds’ legal troubles never become a political issue until his Republican opponents raise it during the general election. By that time, it’s too late. Unless they change party affiliation, Republican opponents Kris Allfrey and David Hamilton could cure Cancer or establish a lasting peace in the Middle East and still not come within a dozen percentage points of Reynolds in a general election. That’s not a criticism of them, but rather a sign of how District 27 is a Democratic stronghold. And Fort Bend Democratic Party Chairman Don Bankston

and-key in local armories. Three people died from listeria possibly as a result of eating Blue Bell ice cream and all of their products are quickly pulled off the shelves. Congress demands an investigation and lawyers are lined up to sue Blue Bell. Yet the GOP passes legislation that actually shields gun manufacturers from any liability for the carnage their products create. The Preamble of the Constitution promises that our government will protect the general welfare and domestic tranquility. The parents of 20 children will never again know domestic tranquility yet the GOP yawns. Between 2003 and 2010 over 247,000 Americas died as a result of gun violence - more than twice as much as all the American soldiers killed in Korea and Vietnam combined. Republicans have responded to this infringement on our domestic tranquility by relaxing

doesn’t want to turn his back on the House Democratic Whip, nor would one expect that. The state-wide news has focused on felony Fraud charges against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Even if Paxton is convicted, it will hardly impact the state’s conservative Republican apparatus. But Reynolds is in a much different position. The Democratic Party in Texas can’t afford to have any more mistakes. Although Reynolds has been fortunate with an inept investigator with an affinity for comic books and a DA’s Offices which struggled to understand the basic concept of “Double Jeopardy”, he’s flirting with disaster. If he stays the course, it’s only a matter of time before a prosecutor secures a conviction.

It’s the law of averages. Apologies in politics are often seen as toxic and an admission of guilt. But they don’t have to be. It’s no secret that Reynolds hopes to run for the 9th Congressional District of Texas after Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) retires. Reynolds owes it to himself and his constituents to apologize, take responsibility for his actions and chart a better, less controversial path forward – especially if he’s interested in furthering his political career.

If there had been one case, you could give Reynolds the benefit of the doubt and consider the alleged offense to be part of a misunderstanding or an unintentional action. Voters have been willing to overlook it because Reynolds has an engaging personality and has established himself as a moderate, pragmatic legislator. He’s worked across the aisle on important issues like Body Cameras, Grand Jury Reform, Truancy and more. But as a private sector attorney, the 41-year-old Reynolds has been sued by personal injury law clients multiple times, including at least three since March. The clients’ allegations have been that he didn’t pay them the agreed amount, or that he agreed to a settlement without their consent. He also had his law license temporarily suspended by the State Bar of Texas earlier in his legal career. Reynolds maintains his innocence in all of the cases, criminal and civil.

20 Years Experience

A Houston political blogger recently called for District 27 State Rep. Ron Reynolds (D-Missouri City) to consider stepping down as a legislator. I disagree, and think that would be the easy way out for the Bellaire-based attorney. If you haven’t heard, Reynolds had felony Barratry charges (colloquially known as ambulance chasing) downgraded to misdemeanor Barratry charges last week in Montgomery County. A new trial hasn’t been set. It’s solely up to Reynolds’ constituents on whether to reelect him. Last fall, they voted him to a third term with 66 percent of the vote. And only a jury can decide whether Reynolds is innocent or guilty of the misdemeanor charges, which carry a penalty of a $4,000 fine and up to a year in jail. Just two years ago, Reynolds beat felony Barratry charges in Harris County, not on whether he was innocent or guilty, but because the investigator in the case stole comic books in an unrelated case.

Safety (DPS) Trooper Brian Encinia for changing lanes without using a turn signal. An argument ensued during the traffic stop, and Encinia forcibly removed Bland from the vehicle after threatening “I will light you up” with his taser. He then arrested Bland and charged her with Assault on a Public Servant. She unsuccessfully attempted to post bail on a $5,000 bond. Initially, there was some suspension over whether Bland committed suicide, but an autopsy revealed her cause of death as such. But the Waller County Sheriff’s Office has been criticized for not doing more to protect Bland while she was in custody. On Aug. 4, Bland’s family filed a federal lawsuit in Houston and requested a US Department of Justice investigation into her death. The case has received international press coverage due to the ongoing trend of law enforcement’s relationship with the African-American community nationally, with Ferguson, Mo. (Michael Brown) and Staten Island, N.Y. (Eric Garner) among the cases. A Google search of Bland’s name produces 51.8 million results. White, who also previously worked as a prosecutor in the Waller County District Attorney’s Office, said there has been a misconception that the

committee is made up of special prosecutors. “We’re not special prosecutors – we’re a committee that’s been asked to investigate the case,” White said. “We can take the case to a Grand Jury if we decide to indict somebody. We will do a proper investigation and see what the facts are. Right now, people only see what’s in the media.” Each of the attorneys has worked on big cases before, but none have ever worked on a case with this much publicity. White, Dick and McDonald have all said they haven’t followed the case closely up to this point. Dick, who agreed to join the committee last week, works for Sam W. Dick & Associates in Sugar Land. “There’s been a whole lot of coverage and scrutiny – we have a tough job ahead of us and a lot of work to do,” Dick said. “I trust and like Lewis a lot. He asked me to join the committee, and he can trust us to do a good job.” McDonald, a Sugar Land resident who recently moved his law firm back to Sugar Land (from Pearland), is looking forward to being part of the committee. “It’s always good to have a thorough, transparent investigation to see if any crimes were committed,” McDonald said. “We’ll be looking at the case as a whole. There are no particular suspect that we have our eyes set on.” someone higher up the chain. “Show me a good school, and I’ll show you a good principal —somebody apparently doesn’t care,” Wyatt said. Wyatt said the post office is in violation of a city ordinance, requiring trees to be seven feet above the sidewalk, so people can walk under them. Because the post office falls under the ownership of the federal government, the city can’t enforce the ordinance, nor can it force them to repair a crooked sign, a dirty interior, to mow an overgrown parking lot or paint the curbs/re-stripe the parking lot. “In a different community, the post office wouldn’t look like this,” Wyatt said. “They should clean it up, and make it look better for paying customers.”

H TRADICAO, FROM PG 1A And it’s for a good cause, with part of the proceeds going to the Houston Food Bank. Last year, Houston Restaurant Weeks raised $1.6 million for the Houston Food Bank. Tradicao, which has a second location in Clear Lake, is one of the few Fort Bend restaurants to participate in Houston Restaurant Weeks. Tradicao created a special three course menu with eight elections of meat for $35 for the Restaurant Weeks. Some of the highlights on the menu are unlimited grilled beef, cognac marinated chicken, parmesan dusted pork tenderloin and bacon wrapped beef along with their signature gourmet salad bar. The restaurant features an endless parade of top-grade Angus quality beef. Customers put a coaster on green, and waiters keep bringing food. Once they flip it over to red, the waiters stop. “The food comes straight from the grill, and you can hear it sizzle,” Abrantes said. “We marinate everything inhouse. Coupled with chicken wrapped with bacon and Argentinian Pork Sausage, there’s also a tradition of black beans, rice, mashed potatoes and caramelized bananas. Tradicao has an interesting story of entrepreneurship and taste. Luis Abrantes lives in Sugar Land, and his children graduated from Dulles High. Luis, who grew up in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, came to the U.S. with $20 in his pocket. He established a successful career in the insurance industry, and then decided to open a restaurant six years ago. Luis met Vanderlei Bernardi, a chef from southern Brazil. Together, they partnered with the restaurant, with Bernardi coming up with the menu, and Abrantes taking care of the business aspect of it. They own locations in Meadows Place, as well as a Clear Lake location that’s open for dinner (and lunch on Fridays-Sundays).

FOOT FACTS by Dr. Eric Tepper BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS

BLISTERS

The rubbing of an area of skin on the foot can result in a blister, which forms on the outer layer of the damaged skin. This pocket of liquid serves to protect the area from additional damage, providing it with sufficient healing time. Running barefoot, wearing poorly fitting footwear, burns, or exposure to chemicals in detergents can cause blisters. Various medical conditions, including impetigo, can also cause blisters to form. Preventative measures to help avoid foot blisters include wearing socks that absorb moisture and applying talcum powder to the skin. Should a blister burst, do not peel the skin off of the top. Allow the fluid to drain, and cover the area with a sterile, dry dressing. Consult your podiatrist. Blisters are often annoying, painful, and uncomfortable. If you ever have unexplained blistering on your skin, you should see your doctor for a diagnosis. We are specialist who provides medical diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems. Our approach is conservative, gentle, and caring at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. We welcome your call for family foot care at 281-9803668. HINT: When poolside or at the beach, applying sunscreen to the feet will help avoid foot blisters.

Missouri City native will ride bike to Alaska in hopes of curing cancer By Keon Broadnax

What to do About This Type of Constipation

Opioids are a class of medications that reduce the feeling of pain by blocking pain receptors located in the brain, spinal cord, and lining of the stomach. Opioids also send signals to the pleasure centers of the brain causing extreme happiness. This class includes codeine, and morphine or derivatives such as oxycodone or methadone. Opioid pain killers are frequently prescribed by a healthcare professional to help reduce severe pain. However these medications can cause the uncomfortable side effect of constipation called opioid-induced constipation (OIC). The movement of food in the stomach drastically slows down when a person is taking opioids for a long time. Many people who take opioids are unable to tolerate this side effect and end up discontinuing their medications. OIC may be alleviated with increasing fiber-rich food, water, and physical activity in a person’s daily routine. Over the counter stool softeners such as Colace and Dulcolax can help alleviate some of the constipation. Suppositories or enemas may be used along with opioids or alone for a more complicated constipation. Methylnaltrexone is a medication that is injected under the fat tissue that blocks the opioid from binding to receptors in the stomach. This blocking action thereby relieves the feeling of pain without experiencing the symptoms of constipation.

There are many ways to spread awareness about cancer, but one Missouri City resident is looking to do that through the Texas 4000 next year. Sarah Qureshy, a University of Texas senior biochemistry major and Lamar Consolidated High graduate, chose the Texas 4000 because it offers a unique opportunity for UT students to spread hope, knowledge and charity around the nation. Qureshy’s father, who is currently in remission, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1994. She went on to say that he is one of the reasons that she will be riding. “I ride for all who have had to battle cancer, like my father…” Qureshy said. Qureshy also said that she will be riding for development of treatments for these diseases as well as spread the

word about knowledge. Texas 4000 is a non-profit organization that gives students the chance spread cancer awareness through a bike ride from Austin to Anchorage, Alaska. Riders are split into three teams and take one of three routes, Sierra, Rockies, or Ozarks. The ride takes 70 days. This journey takes place every summer, but participants are selected a year and a half before they ride. During that year and a half, the participants go out into the community to raise money for their cause. That money is then distributed among different cancer research and awareness groups around the nation. Some these groups include M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Live Strong Foundation, and Brent’s Place. To become a part of this adventure, students must show their passion to fight cancer, leadership abilities, and the ability to work well with a team. After being selected,

Sarah Qureshy students go through a year and half training program in order to prepare for the trip. Over the course of the 70 days, riders share personal stories and ways to detect and prevent cancer. The riders not only use their own stories, but also stories from local people from the cities visited and those from their hometown. “I ride for all of the work

being done to develop treatments for various cancers and other conditions around the world…the power of society working together to keep more people cancer-free,” Qureshy said. Qureshy said the riders will not only be speaking about the prevention, but they will also be showing how to prevent skin cancer through wearing sunscreen.

Beating the Heat before Beating the Competition Most of us are trying to stay inside when the summer heat and humidity is at its peak. But for many athletes, that’s not an option. While baseball and softball season may be drawing to a close, training for fall sports like football and cross country is just getting started. July and August are typically our hottest months of the year with an average afternoon high temperature of 94 degrees. But when you factor in humidity, the heat index, or what it “feels like” outside can easily top 100 degrees. The summer heat isn’t something to take lightly. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 618 deaths per year were associated with exposure to excessive natural heat from 1999-2010. It’s important for athletes to prepare for the stress extreme heat can place on their body. Dr. Rehal Bhojani, M.D.,FAAFP, CAQSM, is the Medical Director of the Sports

Medicine Outreach Program at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital. “One of the first things an athlete needs to do before they start to train is to get acclimated to the environment,” says Dr. Bhojani. “An athlete needs to ease into their workouts, take 7-10 days and begin with a light cardio workout instead of going straight into a 2-hour, twice a day football workout.” Once the workouts begin, it’s important to start well hydrated and then to stay hydrated. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, dehydration is likely to start affecting performance when sweating causes you to lose 2-3% or more of your body weight. That’s a little more than 3 pounds for someone weighing 160 pounds. Dr. Bhojani says an athlete’s weight should not fluctuate significantly from day to day. You need to replenish the fluid loss following a workout. “It’s impor-

If you are plan to be working out for more than an hour, you’ll also need to replenish your electrolytes with sports drinks. An electrolyte is a salt or ion in the blood or other bodily fluid

that carries a charge. Electrolytes play a key role in sending electrical impulses that influence our heart, muscles and nerves. They also play a key role in hydration of our cells, tissues and muscles. Electrolytes can be found in fruits and vegetables but also in sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade. Heat exhaustion is a common reaction to severe heat and includes symptoms like dizziness, headache and fainting.

Individualized Medications at Sienna Compounding Pharmacy What do you do when you need a medication that is not commercially available? Your baby needs a diaper rash ointment, eczema cream or lansoprazole suspension for acid reflux. Your teenager needs a customized acne medication. You would like to try bioidentical hormone replacement therapy or an anti-aging cream tailored for your sensitive skin. Maybe even your pet needs a specialized medication! This is where having a great compounding pharmacy will be an asset to you and your family. Not only do your compounding pharmacists have a wealth of knowledge and can speak to you about a variety of health and medication issues, they are also great problem solvers. Building a rela-

tionship with your compounding pharmacist can benefit you and your family in many ways. The demand for professional compounding has increased as healthcare professionals and patients realize that the limited number of strengths and dosage forms that are commercially available do not meet the needs of many patients, and that these patients often have a better response to a customized dosage form that is individualized to meet their specific needs. For more information on how compounded medications can improve your health and wellbeing, please come by Sienna Compounding Pharmacy starting Tuesday, August 18th for you free mini-consultation. www.SiennaRx.com

Benefits of Dental Implants • Dental implants look, feel and function like your natural teeth. • Healthy teeth do not need to be ground down, like in bridgework, which is more likely to need replacement or can fail because of the heavy load placed on the teeth. • Anchoring dental implants in the jawbone stimulates bone tissue and gums, ensuring an attractive, esthetic result, while helping to maintain facial structures. • Dental implants do not require any adhesives to hold the new teeth in place, and eliminate discomfort and insecurity of ill-fitting dentures. • Last but not least: you get a secure and permanent tooth replacement.

THE FORT BEND

STHRSPOTTER Missouri City POA to host September 11 Charity Golf Tournament By Elsa Maxey elsa @ fortbendstar.com

Missouri City’s Amy Robinson, long-time mainstay supporting public safety and the Missouri City Police Officers Association, announces one of this area’s events in remembrance of 9-11-2001, also referred to as patriot day. As those of us who experienced the terror whether there or not, this was when the twin towers in New York were destroyed and the Pentagon was attacked. Robinson advises that on Friday, Sept. 11 in Missouri City, the Missouri City Police Officers Association will host an Invitational Golf Scramble at the Quail Valley Golf Club. “In remembrance of that fateful day, the tournament will recognize First Responders, past and present, for service to their community,” she states. These heroes, many of them unsung, vigilantly respond to and handle so many life-altering situations that start with

telecommunicators. Robinson tells The Star that proceeds from the tournament, again this year as in the past, which garnered between $18,000 to $25,000, have supported college scholarships, Adopt-a-Family Program, Bethel Ministries, Boy Scouts, Special Olympics, crime prevention, and financial assistance for Missouri City officers, First Responders and their families. Throughout the tournament at the golf course, the themed event next month will have “a unique golf ball drop on the 18th green” along with a display of first responder vehicles from Missouri City and Fort Bend, says Robinson. She asks interested persons to visit www.golfquailvalley.com to register or purchase balls for the Unique Ball Drop. The tourney itself is unique in that in addition to the standard 4-person scramble, a tournament from within will be featured as pat of the invitational event for first responders. First responder

flight winners will be awarded separate prizes for this competition. An advocate of the police officers, Keith Boyett, President of the Missouri City Police Officers Association, reportedly said recently that the city’s budget will likely allow the hiring of four additional police officers, which would increase the size of the force to 98. Boyett has been working with city officials in support of commensurate pay for police officers with that of neighboring cities. Community partners making the upcoming special observance golf event with a cause possible include Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, Republic Services, Johnson Development, Market Petroleum, Classic Chevrolet, Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, Tool Mart, Quail Valley Golf Course, Raising Cane’s, Aquarius Home Service, Quail Valley Fund, Collision Clinic, Quality Wrecker Service, Trammel Crow, Whitley Penn, LLC.

Those interested in playing in either golf flight and/ or businesses and individuals looking for sponsor opportunities, visit www. golfquailvalley.com, contact Detective Keith Boyett at kboyett26@gmail.com or 281403-5827, or Missouri City Councilman Floyd Emery at floydemery@sbcglobal.net or 713-562-0331. The Fort Bend Star invites interested persons to visit this story online and leave feedback as a tribute, a kind of acknowledgement to honor First Responders, past and present. Personal experiences and public safety personnel names are welcome. We appreciate the service and sacrifice of these public servants for our safety and protection as we continue to enjoy the great American way of life. For more information about the Missouri City Police Officers Association Invitational Golf Scramble, please contact Amy Robinson, 832-274-6212 or ajahlbrand@yahoo.com.

12U National World Series Champs Mike Jonkins Baseball (formerly Texas Saints) competed in the Nations 12U National World Series last month in Beaumont and came home with some hardware. The first award they won was the Skills Competition Overall Team Champion Award. They finished pool play with a perfect 5-0 record earning them the No. 2 seed for bracket play. They finished the tournament with a third place finish and did an outstanding job representing our league/city. They were the talk of the tournament with their rare combination of speed and power. Everywhere they went people wanted to know where they were from. They proudly replied Missouri City.

Ridge Point High’s Bruffy commits to Texas Tech By Adrian Martin the for star

Summer just keeps getting better for Ridge Point High offensive lineman Travis Bruffy. One of Bruffy’s goals was to pledge to his desired school by the start of the season. He achieved that goal with a commitment to Texas Tech University on July 27. Bruffy is elated to have chosen the Red Raiders’ program for his collegiate career. He’s the second FBISD player to commit to the west Texas school after Elkins quarterback Johnathan Giles committed last year and

enrolled this month. “It feels amazing,” Bruffy said. “I could not be happier. It was a great decision at the time and now I realize it was an even greater decision. All the support I’ve gotten from the tech staff and the Tech alumni has kind of been overwhelming.” The 6-foot-7, 270 pound senior was also honored with being listed on the 2015 Touchdown Club of Houston UIL High School Preseason Team. He’ll be honored at a banquet with the rest of the All-Greater Houston team, including fellow FBISD stars Jeremy Smith (Marshall/Arizona State com-

H LTR. TO ED, FROM PG 4A gun control measures. Mr. Bankston reminded us of the Aurora theater shooter who killed 12, yet what’s often forgotten is that he managed to shoot a total of 82 people. Yes, you read that right - one person was able to shoot 82 people. No one should be able to mow down 82 people. As Mr. Bankston said, enough is enough. — S. Marshall Sugar Land HHHHHHHHHH Gun owner requests gun control laws Don’t tell me what I, as a citizen of the United States, believe. If the Constitution is not able to be interpreted as times change, we’d still have segregated schools and corporations wouldn’t be able to try to buy elections. Republicans have never supported responsible gun ownership – they’ve supported unlimited guns for any nut that might be able to put money on the counter at a gun show. I’m a gun owner and I agree with you completely. Those who have drunk the NRA kool aid are just aiding irresponsible gun ownership and use. I also teach in law school and cannot image allowing people to bring guns on campus. That’s just stupid. –Alan Blakley HHHHHHHHHH PRO-RECYCLING We were pleased to read in the Fort Bend Star about the possibilities of citywide curbside recycling for Missouri City -- especially since our subdivision of Quail Valley doesn’t provide such now. Our city should enter into the modern era and join Sugar Land and Pearland (and even Houston) in this effort. Also an adjoining newspaper article said Ft Bend County was attracting “Millennials”; they expect to find recycling as part of a progressive community. Irv & Jane Smith Missouri City HHHHHHHHHH FBCAD response (from fortbendstar.com) We need more law enforcement battle against unlawful appraisal valuations taking place by Central Appraisal Districts violating state policies annually of ten percent limit increases, that’s effecting homestead exempt properties and forcing owners out of their homes! Fort Bend DA needs a prosecutor and investigator to be

solely assigned to CAD illegal appraisal actions, that’s effecting residents from west side like Katy, Fulshear, Sugar Land, Missouri City and east Fort Bend. Protesters continue to increase each year. –Rodrigo Carreon Fresno HHHHHHHHHH RED LIGHT CAMERA RESPONSE I am dismayed that The Star, as a local neighborhood newspaper, supports lawlessness. Your many frequent articles publicizing removal of the Red Light traffic cameras in Sugar Land is out of place for a family paper. These cameras are designed to promote safe driving and reduce personal injuries caused by Red Light Runners. To encourage their removal is inconsistent with trying to encourage safer driving. Yes, fines are collected for running red lights. As are fines for speeding and other driving errors. You do the crime you have to pay the fine. To encourage more intersection accidents to eliminate fines is ludicrous. Lets promote Life is Fragile Handle with Care. Tom Altenbern Missouri City HHHHHHHHHH Anti-Red Light Cameras (from fortbendstar.com) Mr. Van Der Grinten is one of many committed individuals and groups to the money grab robbery systems using red light and speed cameras. These systems produce profits ONLY when the traffic safety engineering factors are deliberately done improperly to increase the numbers of tickets – often at the expense of reducing safety. Speed limits are arbitrarily set well below the 85th percentile speeds of free flowing traffic under good conditions (safest method). Yellow light intervals are arbitrarily set shorter than needed for the ACTUAL perception/reaction times and approach speeds of at least 85% of the vehicles (safest method). Engineers must deliberately do (or be forced to do) their job improperly or the expensive-to-use ticket cameras lose so much money they are not employed. This is literally a racket, a government operated robbery system that should be illegal to use in every state – as it is in many states already. James C. Walker, Life Member – National Motorists Association HHHHHHHHHH Civil Servant: Stafford PD Chief Bonny Krahn (from Facebook) Congrats, Chief. He hired me for my first police position in 1993. Even then, there were many nights I was the only one on the streets of Stafford. Agencies

worked much closer back then because we had to. –Chad Norvell HHHHHHHHHH Missouri City goes back to the drawing board in city manager search (from Facebook) This will be a tough and complicated selection process. What accomplished City Manager would want to take over the reins of a City with a notoriously headstrong Mayor, huge amounts of debt anchored to marginally profitable businesses and few ways to remedy these situations? How do you constructively harness the talents and potential of a City with few financial resources and an archaic and inflexible approach to issues? The City would have residents believe that we have strong commercial development but they won’t disclose how many new businesses are wholesalers (no sales tax) or have entered into long-term tax abatement agreements. If new commercial development is not bringing in new taxes, it certainly merits huge criticism. So, the new City Manager will have to resolve some very tough strategy, communication and transparency concerns. The City touts its commercial development but if it doesn’t really assist to decrease the tax burden on residents, why is it a positive? –Howard Moline HHHHHHHHHH There’s no room for socialism in Fort Bend County (from Facebook) I’m not a Bernie Sanders fan, but his ideas are receptive to a group of people (mostly liberals and some independents) that are frustrated in income inequality in this country and that the middle class has not recovered from the Great Recession. Sanders speaks to those who think the bankers and CEOs have gamed the system for so long and have gotten off light in the face of the recession while others continue to struggle. But I think it’s unfair to paint the local Democrats who support Sanders as socialists. It would be just as unfair to label local Donald Trump supporters as those who say Mexicans are sending rapists and disease to America, as The Don said. Neither –Don Bankston– nor –Richard Morrison– have passed out or have claimed to have any socialist ideas, but they’re now socialist just because they went to a Sanders rally? That’s not fair. –Chad Washington HHHHHHHHHH In Defense of Socialism… (from FortBendStar.com) Sudhalter’s title to this Commentary reveals his ignorance and does nothing more than promote discrimi-

nation–often rooted in ignorance–of many policies that he probably agrees with, even though he’s a “Conservative,” whatever that means to him or anyone else. Just like the fact that President Obama is “black,” although technically half white and half black (and really half-African, not African American), causes racists and other ignorant people to believe that nothing he can do can be right for America or Americans. His “no room for socialism” comment simply shows that he doesn’t know what Sanders means by “socialism.” But Sudhalter goes one step further and even more ignorantly states “Fort Bend can’t sustain it’s [incorrect spelling of the intended word] success with any type of Socialism.” Well, I’d say Fort Bend County is already successful in part because of “socialism” when you consider one definition of that word. What do you think us paying property taxes is, other than all of us chipping in our fair share for the common good? Dictionary.com has this as the first definition: “a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.” That’s what we have. Our cities and county governments use tax dollars paid for by the community as a whole and then our government representatives use that money to build roads, hire police officers, etc. That’s socialism. Seems pretty successful, and most people are happy to have both. The third definition is as follows: “(in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.” That’s clearly the one about which Sudhalter speak negatively. Think the former USSR or China. But to get to the point, Sanders and his Democratic Socialists believe the following principles: “We are socialists because we reject an economic order based on private profit, alienated labor, gross inequalities of wealth and power, discrimination based on race and sex, and brutality and violence in defense of the status quo. We are socialists because we share a vision of a humane social order based on popular control of resources and production, economic planning, equitable distribution, feminism, racial equality and non-oppressive relationships. We are socialists because we are developing a concrete strategy for achieving that vision, for building a majority movement that will make democratic socialism a reality in America. We believe that such a strategy must acknowledge the class structure of American society and that this class structure means that there

A DS

is a basic conflict of interest between those sectors with enormous economic power and the vast majority of the population.” Seems pretty reasonable. But those are broad principles, and this forum is not appropriate to give all of the specific examples of what those principles would mean as specific policies. You can Google them easily and decide for yourself whether you agree or not. But the final point is, let us not, particularly in this campaign season, decide issues on false-impressions and vague understandings of ONE word, like Socialism, to reject the underlying policies that may be at the heart of the idea to the person who uses the word, whether it be Socialism, Conservatism, Liberalism, Democratic, Republican, Tea Party, Independent, or otherwise. Words are words. But specifics control. –Dylan B.R. HHHHHHHHHH Response to Sudhalter’s Column: Dear Mr. Sudhalter, I read with great interest your claim that my husband of 45 years is a socialist. Son, it scared the heck outta me. I mean, it’s bad enough that he’s got socialist Medicare, frequently uses the socialist United States Postal Service, attended a state university, applauded his son for joining the largest socialist program in the world – the United States Military, has been known to get books at the government owned library, has knowingly driven on government roads, supports socialist farm subsidies, has deliberately gone to a public park, and has wantonly listened to the National Weather Service. But now, according to you, he’s really done it. He went to see a Democratic Socialist candidate for President of the United States, Bernie Sanders. So, not only do I have to worry about him, I have to fret about myself, too. I went to see the Pope once, so does that make me a Catholic? God help me, I went to see Malala speak, am I now a Muslim? I saw George HW Bush speak at his library, does that make me a Republican? I went to see Rick Perry, does that make me a Moron? Please offer me some guidance on this subject because I don’t know where to go on Sunday mornings, and to be honest, I doubt that Rick Perry is going to be much help. And by the way, you left out the part where he told you that he also went to see Hillary Clinton. I guess I should be relieved that you did. Finding out that she’s a woman would totally ruin our anniversary party next month. Like any good wife, I have often blamed my husband for things that happened before I met him. He’s only been Democratic County Chairman for two years so blaming him for 20 years of politics in Fort Bend is kinda like blaming

PAGE 5B

him for the earth cooling. Well, I guess you might as well blame him, I often do. I saved the most important for last -But here’s the part that really, really concerns me. Years and years ago, I used to write for this newspaper, the Fort Bend Star, with a column named Juanita Jean. The owner of the newspaper at that time was a female Democrat. She was probably a socialist, too, because she was on Medicare when she got sick. She paid me very well in legal tender American money to write for her newspaper. However, you, the capitalist rabid free-market mature grown up man, asked my husband to write a column for you for free. Whoa, that reasoning just swirls around the rim without ever going down the drain. What political philosophy is it that says other people should work for free to make you rich? What’s the word I am thinking of here? Oh yeah, communist. The sad part is that now everyone who read this is also a communist. Susan DuQuesnay Bankston HHHHHHHHHH Response: “Socialism: Bring It On!” If it’s such a terrible thing to support Bernie Sanders, or even to attend one of his speeches, why is he drawing such huge crowds, even in red states? 8,000 in Dallas. 11,000 in Phoenix. The Houston event was announced less than a week in advance, there was a virtual media blackout before the event, yet 5,000 people showed up. Something is striking a chord here. OK, granted, the majority is not always right. So let’s look at the actual positions, shall we? You can find them at http://www.sanders.senate.gov/ agenda/ Here are some selected quotes (but please go read the whole thing): “We need a major investment to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure: roads, bridges, water systems, waste water plants, airports, railroads and schools” “No one in this country who works 40 hours a week should live in poverty.” “Quality education in America, from child care to higher education, must be affordable for all. Without a high-quality and affordable educational system, we will be unable to compete globally and our standard of living will continue to decline.” “The greed, recklessness and illegal behavior of major Wall Street firms plunged this country into the worst financial crisis since the 1930s. They are too powerful to be reformed. They must be broken up.” If that’s socialism, bring it on! –Vicki Coffman Richmond
