bridal basics

The Rules Of Wed How Will You Pull Off The Party Of A Lifetime? Start here…

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT Want to make your celebration stand out? Think personalization, a term industry pros often use. It can mean blending ethnic traditions into your ceremony, or asking your caterer to add a family recipe for dinner. For some couples, it also means including your pooch as part of their big day festivities. Just remember to first check with the ceremony/reception site to see if they’re pet-friendly. Another modern touch is to add some kick to your bridal shoes with charms featuring gemstones in your birth month and his. Or, if you prefer, substitute the charms for flowers signifying each birth month. Another personal detail is to honor a special someone. For example at the reception, toast the woman who has had the greatest impact on your life (mom, grandmother, or perhaps an aunt) and then hand your bouquet to her instead of tossing it to the crowd.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION? Once you announce your engagement, take time to sit down with your fiancé and discuss your thoughts of a dream wedding. Will it be a formal or a more intimate affair? At home or away? Doing this will identify what’s important to the both of you and also help you decide what exactly is feasible. Reach out to the Internet and magazines to generate ideas about the overall look of your affair. Remember, you can’t think about contracting with your vendors, ordering flowers, or even sorting out a guest list until you decide on what your style will be. For instance, maybe you’ll be inspired by the colors and flavors of Greece. Or, perhaps you’ll see a painting, a handbag, or even a shoe in a color design you’d love to recreate in your wedding invitations and floral centerpieces. As you continue to research, you’ll soon notice that a theme will begin to surface, which can catapult you to choosing all the individual elements.

62

HIRE A PRO As most recent brides

MAKE A GRAND EXIT

will confess, planning a wedding¬while very exciting¬is no stroll in the park. That’s why it may be wise to employ help. A wedding planner will do everything from finding you a wedding site for the ceremony and reception to suggesting a photographer. If you feel a fulltime person is not within reach, consider getting someone on a part-time basis to handle big projects.

No wedding album is complete without that photo of the bride and groom waving

goodbye at the reception. Make it memorable with the classic sparkler send off, but if your venue doesn’t allow them, or you just prefer something less expected, consider one of these alternatives. Have guests wave colorful pinwheels or hold wands streamed with ribbons in your wedding colors as you pass by them. Hand out minibells for friends and family to ring, or battery operated tea lights to illuminate your path. You can also bid guests goodbye while driving away in a vintage vehicle (opt for a convertible with the top down!). Attach a “Just Married” sign to a shiny red pickup truck for a country-themed celebration, or a bicycle built for two for a garden soiree. Cool couples can climb onto a Vespa or motorcycle and speed off into the sunset.

planning

What It Takes To Throw An After-Party. By Kathleen L. Kent

SIMPLIFY YOUR PLANS The ceremony and reception have been scheduled with precision, but at the end of the evening, you’d like to shake off the stress and just kick back, relax, and catch up with old friends you haven’t seen in ages. Consider an after-party. This growing trend is an opportunity to let your hair down, continue to party, or maybe just chill for an hour or two—or four! You can go as formal or informal as you’d like. Where you choose will depend in part on your budget, as well as how you want to spend the time. If your venue has a separate area for cocktails, you could head back there after the reception, but you’ll need to consider that you might be paying a premium for the place. Want to dance? A nearby nightclub—complete with a VIP list for all your guests—might be the way to go. Typically, there is no formal invitation; instead, the couple let guests know about it at the bridal shower or other pre-wedding parties. Seek out close friends and family, those you didn’t get enough time with at the reception, and who traveled from afar.

SET A NO-FUSS MENU Though you’ve served a delectable multi-course meal, by the time the reception wraps up, your guests have been dancing the night away and toasting the occasion, so they’ll welcome some nibbles for those midnight munchies. Danielle Bobish, founder and creative director of Curtain Up Events (curtainupevents.com), recommends keeping it fun with the kinds of foods you enjoyed in college after a night out and suggests renting a popcorn machine or serving a variety of donuts. Other ideas might include iconic foods from your hometown, like cheesesteaks and Tastykakes if you’re from Philadelphia. For a Cape Cod wedding, why not offer clam chowder and lobster rolls? But you could go for something as simple as burritos from your favorite takeout taco place, or trays of sandwiches or passed hors d’oeuvres: mini-mac ‘n’cheese cups, sliders, fries, and tiny ice cream cones are also welcome treats. Be sure to check with your locale’s manager to see what’s okay and what’s not as far as bringing in outside food.

ADD INSTANT AMBIANCE Décor? Again, the choice is yours. If it’s a DIY kind of party, you could keep it simple and maybe see if a friend or two can cut out of the reception a bit early to make sure some tables and chairs are strategically placed at the space, dim the lights, set out a few votive candles and decorations. Or, says Rena Puebla, owner of Coast Concierge (coastconcierge.com), if your wedding is cultural, you may go all out as your heritage dictates.

AFTER-PARTY EXTRAS

Have your bridesmaids bring their bouquets and centerpieces from the reception to decorate the after-party scene. Another option is to pick up bunches of brilliantlycolored flowers or potted plants at the supermarket or local flower market and scatter them about. MUSICAL NOTES Sure an iPod with speakers is a great idea. But why not create the ultimate in post-wedding celebration. The experts at International Sounds (internationalsounds. com) will create an afterparty allowing newlyweds time to kick back with guests. Music is just part of the story: They will also customize special lighting and furnishings to complete the picture. FLOWER POWER

Big-Day Survival Guide Easy Ways To Avoid Potential Problems. By Anne Raso

More than likely your wedding will go off without a hitch. But it’s always a wise bride who expects the unforeseen. Sudden rain showers, withering flowers, or even the unanticipated blackout are just a few of the possible bewildering situations you may encounter. Here’s our quick guide for averting possible calamities. BAD WEATHER For an outdoor reception, select a venue with a large indoor space and book both in one contract. If possible, reserve a tent and be ready to leave a deposit. Check weather reports a week before the big day. Go to Plan B if the chance of rain exceeds 60 percent. Remember that tent setup can take up to three days. If you fear the worst (having to postpone) buy insurance early. Severe weather can affect an indoor wedding as well. Wedding expert Erin Sutera remembers one bride who survived a recent blizzard. “Because most family and friends could not get to the wedding, the venue insisted the couple have a proper celebration a week later with both families in attendance.” Happily, all had a wonderful time! LATE ARRIVALS If your ceremony and reception sites are miles apart, you might opt to have your guests transported, so that no one gets lost along the way. Experts recommend reserving buses or vans. On the day before your wedding, make sure the drivers have accurate directions and schedules in hand. Thank goodness for GPS systems!

WILTING BLOOMS Flowers such as gardenias, camellias, and hydrangeas are delicate

POWER UP Always have a back-up power source. Consider a second generator if you’re thinking of a country wedding. Also, look for an alternative power source if your venue is an older building. Most important of all have your caterer, band or DJ and lighting designer communicate about power distribution.

CATERING WOES Have your caterer visit the venue in advance to gauge any potential problems and check any restrictions so that you can negotiate or budget for them in advance. Also be certain that the caterer has an experienced wait staff to handle everything from cocktail hour to table service.

THE BAND/DJ DOESN’T SHOW

and will not last the full day. If you are marrying in summer (indoor heat in winter can be just as detrimental!), choose heat-resistant buds like orchids and anthurium. Avoid out-of-season blooms, they’ll likely come a far distance plus the extra travel will often show. New York City wedding planner Joseph Alexander recommends using locally grown flowers especially if your celebration is in a faraway destination. “Remember, when importing flowers into a foreign country, it's important to note that at least 30 2013

MELTING CAKE

Without music, the festivities are certain to fall flat, so you must find a way to crank some tunes. If there’s time, have a take-charge wedding attendant go online to find a DJ. Other options: Grab an iPod and a few CDs—and keep your sense of humor. Along with your signed contract, your best bet at preventing no-show entertainment is to call several times to confirm the date and time.

Fondant and marzipan are not prone to melting. However, neither are as delicious as buttercream, which can often “dissolve” at the sign of heat. To avoid this happening, schedule the cake’s delivery to the venue as late as possible. If it’s multi-tiered, have it assembled on site. For peace of mind, have your cake designer bring extra sugar flowers and icing to repair any mishaps.

Whether tears of joy or warm weather have altered your perfect look, there’s always a solution. Always carry an emergency kit of essentials for quick touchups. Makeup artist Tiffany Bartok recommends all natural Skincare Makeup Facial Blotting Papers from Jane Iredale. Made from organic flax seed, they’re great. ½

percent of the blooms will show up wilted.”

Honeymoon Bliss Kick Off Your First Week Of Marital Pleasure With These Hot Suggestions.

It’s your wedding night and, of course, he knows ni what he’s getting—but wants w nothing more than to watch you n unveil the goods, slowly and senu sually. A sexy striptease requires s confidence to pull off and done c properly can put you both in a p deliciously amorous mood. You d may never get a chance to wear your wedding gown again, but your veil is another story altogether. Pack it in your suitcase with a pair of sexy stilettos. Or, incorporate some scarves or opera-length gloves that you can use to tickle and taunt him as you undress. Not into a striptease? Then slip into something soft and silky. Lingerie may not be the newest idea but is always fun. SEXY BEGINNINGS SE

PLAY GAMES How well do you know your new husband? The honeymoon is a great time to find out—by playing Strip Trivia to uncover some inner secrets. While traveling to your honeymoon destination, take a few moments to write down 10 to 20 personal questions you’d like your partner to reveal. They can be anything from “What was your first pet’s name?” to “What is one of your sexual fantasies?” Once you have arrived at your destination and are relaxed, take turns answering these questions; if you get something wrong, you take something off. The best thing about the game is that no one really loses!

HAPPILY EVER AFTER We’re enchanted by some of the amazing pearls of wisdom from our readers. Share your thoughts on marriage with us at ForTheBrideMag.com. O “One of the greatest gifts you can give your partner is your happiness.”

THE HEAT IS ON After your honeymoon, you will likely find that you miss features of that memorable trip such as your morning croissants and café au lait in Paris. Or the sunset you viewed each evening from your Bahamian balcony. And, of course, the great sex you had. Wait! So how do you re-create honeymoon sex? Here, a few tips. O Get in the mindset. One of the reasons vacation sex is different is that you have no interruptions: you know that’s what you’re there for. So unplug the phone, shut the door—and get away! O Create the ambiance. Recall the sights, sounds and flavors you loved about your honeymoon. Were margaritas a favorite in Mexico? Then stir up some memories. Jamaican reggae music? Buy a CD of your Caribbean favorites. Wear that sexy sarong you purchased on the beach. Suddenly, you’re back in the Islands!

GOOD & PLENTY On one honeymoon night, place a call to room service and order some ice cream with all the toppings on the side: Think chocolate syrup, whipped cream, strawberries, caramel sauce and other sweet indulgences. When dessert arrives, take turns blindfolding each other and tasting the goods, or turn your partner’s body into a plate filled with goodies!

What Kind Of Groom Is He? Take Our Quiz To Find Out. By Eleni Elias

IT IS THREE MONTHS BEFORE THE WEDDING. MY FIANCÉ... 1. Is helping, but when I mention favors or color themes his eyes glaze over. 2. Enjoys the hustle and bustle of planning but at times doesn't realize the difference between fonts and fondant. 3. Has overruled most of my ideas. I almost long for one of those grooms who can't be bothered—at least I’d get my way sometimes.

2. We both definitely had our eyes on specific things. But in the end we got what we really needed and made some compromises. 3. He knew exactly what he wanted and so did I. There was a little fighting over the scanner.

on a particular place. So it was kind of hard to decide on a final location. MOST WEEKENDS... 1. He's out on the golf course or off with his pals so I spend most weekends running wedding

DID HE COME ALONG TO PICK YOUR DRESS? 1 No, I went with my mom, his mom and bridesmaids. 2. He knows I'm a traditional girl, so he's fine with waiting till the wedding day--but insists on some hints! 3. He came along--and insisted I try a couple of extra styles to make sure the dress I loved with actually "the one!"

Here’s how to score.

SELECTING THE VENUE… 1. Well, I have always dreamed of a beach wedding, he just thinks of lounging in a beach chair. 2. A simple task. As long as the site is large enough to hold all the guests his mom has invited, he’s fine with anything. 3. Nearly impossible. I want the wedding to be big time, he would rather something more intimate—so location was a little tricky to hash out. WHO CHOSE THE FLAVOR OF THE WEDDING CAKE? 1. He just loves cake, so it didn’t really matter what flavor—as long as he has to have his share. 2. He has his favorites while I love some others. In the end, though, we found a flavor and made it our own! 3. He wants his own groom's cake.

A Chill Groom He may be a bit too laid-back. But remember this is his big day as well, so urge him to get involved. Give him some exciting tasks such as asking him to make a list of all his favorite songs he wants the DJ to play or letting him pick out gifts for his groomsmen.

1 AND THE HONEYMOON... 1. I let him know several options, but in the end the decision was mine to make. 2. We researched different locations and decided on a final place together! 3. We both had our heart set 2013

A Helpful Groom You lucky bride! It is great that your guy wants to help out and give his opinion. Bring him along to pick out the flowers, ask him what he thinks of the color theme you have chosen and even let him pick out tuxes for himself and his guys (with your final approval of course!).

mostly 3's A Groomzilla It looks like you may be dealing with a Groomzilla. It’s awesome he wants to be involved, but make sure he is not completely overpowering and making every decision. Try to be open and patient with each other ½

Hidden Costs Of Weddings What You Need To Know. By Stacy Holz

With the cost of a wedding in the US averaging over $27,000, brides are looking to create a budget. However, that is sometimes not enough to keep the spending from expanding when you come across the many hidden costs of getting married. So, if you are a bride trying to keep her eye on the bottom line, read on… DOLLARS & SENSE Typically when you book your reception venue or caterer your contract will include the service of a wait staff. But have you considered the other needs of your guests? Upon arrival, your guests will need to park their vehicles, and if there is cooler weather will likely have to check their coats. More often than not, a valet and coat check will not be included in your venue contract. Valet parking can be as much as $10 per vehicle; the coat check is customarily $1 or $2 per person. Some other considerations include bathroom attendants, chaffing tray servers, food station staff, plus additional bartenders. Check with your venue about what exactly is included before you sign on the dotted line.

DRESS SUCCESS You’ve mentioned your budget to the sales associate, but did she inform you of the extra charges for gown adjustments. In order to get the perfect fit, most brides need several alterations. These changes can add up to several hundred dollars depending on how much work you need. Ask your bridal consultant what the average costs

SHIP SHAPE If you decide to rent linens, chairs, or even a photo booth, remember that charges for shipping will be added to the bill. Vendors often charge a flat fee ($25-to-$100) or a fee based on distance (50 cents per mile or more). Inquire about shipping charges before you sign the contract. It may save you a considerable amount of money to choose a vendor closer to your reception site.

MEALTIME While not required it is a nice gesture to offer a meal for those vendors like photographers, videographers and musicians. Remember, it’s a long day for them too. The caterer will often offer you a discounted price (as much as half off ); vendors often enjoy their meal in a separate area from the main reception. Count your vendors and you’ll see that the cost of their meals can add up quickly.

JUST FOR HIM

are so that you can factor it into your budget beforehand. Other alteration charges are customized beading or appliqués, changing the neckline and adding sleeves to your gown.

STICKER SHOCK You have the invitations ordered and the envelopes addressed but what about the postage? This seemingly little 2013

detail can really add up and is important to factor into your invitation budget. An invitation weighing more than an ounce (most do) will require at least a 66 cent stamp if not more. It’s best to take a completed invitation to the post office and have it weighed to see just how much postage will be required. Don’t forget to purchase additional first-class stamps for reply cards and thank-you notes, as well.

While tips are not often a hidden cost, it is often something that is a last-minute consideration. Help your bride stick to her budget by creating envelopes. Place the desired amount in each envelope and give them to your best man to hand out on the day of the wedding. Tell your bride-to-be what the total amount was so she can add it to the budget. Not sure how much to tip? Visit ForTheBrideMag.com/ Grooms-Guide-to-Tipping.asp for all you need to know. ½

Don’t get stuck waiting for a dress that will never come...

Before you purchase your dress be sure to verify that it’s from a authorized retailer, not a counterfeiter.

Hollywood Glam By Patricia Canole

a celebrity magazine and coveted Beyonce’s gorgeous looks and Lea Michele's timeless beauty. Here’s your chance to snag your best bridal look from these top beauty experts to the stars. WHO HASN’T FLIPPED THROUGH

Her Mally Beauty Collection (mallybeauty.com) is a favorite with Hollywood A-listers including Zoey Deschanel and Beyonce. She dedicates every day of her life to helping women celebrate their MAKEUP ARTIST unique beauty. SLIM YOUR FACE Apply highlighter strategically! Mally’s Face Defender Super Natural Highlighter is a lightweight formula and can be used on key facial features that naturally catch the light. Apply to cheekbones, down the center of your nose, the tip of your chin, your brow bone and the inner corner of eyes. TREAT FINE LINES Roncal suggests applying primer before you begin your makeup routine. This should always be the first step after you moisturize, since it fills in the lines and minimizes the appearance of pores creating a perfect canvas for your makeup. Her Perfect Prep Poreless Primer smoothes out the skin’s texture and keeps makeup fresh all day long–a must for every bride! MAKEUP THAT WORKS While it may be tempting to really go for something different with your makeup, Roncal recommends a bride stick with a natural matte look. Avoid dewy, which will appear “greasy” in your wedding photos. Be sure to have Mally Beauty Face Defender handy the day of your wedding, so you can easily touch up and not have to worry about shiny skin all day. Some say that shimmer may not be appropriate for a wedding day. However, Roncal loves using a little bit of a shimmery eye shadow; it will catch the light and help make your eyes sparkle!

SARAH POTEMPA Celebrity hairstylist Sarah Potempa (sarahpotempa.com) has created waves for some stellar actresses, Jaime King and Lea Michele and amazing singers, including Alicia Keyes. With her experience and knowledge of the hair industry, Sarah has HAIRSTYLIST produced styling tools to make it easy. GET THE LOOK Brides who want to wear their hair long, should consult with a hairstylist for some indvidual inspiration. A heavy, side part is the perfect way to add volume on top, says Protempa who advises you tuck the other side behind your ear for an alluring look. She guarantees this sultry style will last all day into night. Have your stylist use The BEACHWAVER™ Rotating Curling Iron and Clips for a perfect set. Increase the Hollywood glam quotient by adding a vintage brooch as the perfect accessory on your wedding day. Take a hint from the ‘40s and wear a vintage brooch in your hair. You can find these glittery pieces in antique shops. Convert the brooch by attaching a clip with a hot glue gun.

KATE SOMMERVILLE Her pore cleansing facials are cutting edge (thanks to years spent working in a plastic surgeon’s office), but Kate Somerville’s (katesomerville.com) real claim to fame is her thirst quenching skin care line FACIALIST and her ability to make celebs like Christina Aguilera and Ivanka Trump radiant. PERK UP DULL SKIN Exfoliate: Ridding your body of dead skin cells leaves healthy cells on the surface and helps keep pores free of impurities. Somerville’s own ExfoliKate, uses natural fruit enzymes, gentle acids, and microbeads to do the job. It clarifies and polishes skin to reveal a glowing, fresh complexion, and it’s also available in a body version! Hydrate: Look for a serum with sodium hyaluronate to put hydration and moisture back in skin. Hydration means getting water into the skin cells; moisturizing means locking it there by applying a cream or lotion on top of the hydrated skin. Both hydration and moisturizing are truly necessary because more-hydrated cells are healthier; they look and function better. Kate Somerville’s DermalQuench Liquid Lift is the at-home treatment that only takes seconds and is used twice a day to deliver deep hydration to improve the look of elasticity and tone, rejuvenate the skin and immediately reveal a gorgeous glow. DIFFERENT STROKES Stress less before your special day and treat yourself to a massage. Doing so will reduce anxiety, elevate mood and encourage a feeling of well-being. Somerville contends that a massage will also aid in helping eliminate excess fluid and bacteria. ½

DIETS DO WORK. But they are definitely not a permanent solution. More often than not you end up gaining the weight back—and then some. So how does a busy bride-to-be (and fiance) even have time to focus on stringent diets? Actually it’s quite easy when you’re living a healthy lifestyle. Here are some strategies that will help you achieve your goal and leave you fit.

WHEN TO EAT

BOOST YOUR PORTION IQ

You don’t always have to cut calories to shed weight. Try eating every Controlling portions is the single best way to lose weight. Stick to a fistthree to four hours. It keeps your metabolism up, so your body burns sized portion of pasta (because carbs increase serotonin, a mood enhancer; energy most efficiently. And never skip breakfast. Avoiding breakfast will you’re given, slice off a piece the size of a deck of cards (those four ounces cause you to eat more during the day plus it will not give your metabare all you need). Frozen entrees are a lifesaver for a busy bride-to-be. Try olism and body that jump start it needs. You don’t have to do a Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice and Kashi which are usually around 300 40-yard dash from your bed to the refrigerator; just eat within two calories—and often contain less sodium than most deli sandwiches. Work hours of waking. Nosh on one or two snacks of them into your weekly dining menu. When running around town to fittings, avoid experiencing a drop in blood sugar because if your energy and mood plummet, you’re more likely to binge later. You can do this by carrying healthy, portable snacks, such as a yogurt drink, soy chips, a few whole grain cookies, string cheese or an high-protein energy bar.

HOW THEY MET Mike and I met the end of junior year in high school. We became friends, and after a while started dating. That was 11 years ago. THE PROPOSAL Mike surprised me in May 2011 during a girls’ night out in Atlantic City. He arrived with Champagne and a beautiful diamond ring which he secretly placed in the flute glass. As I was sipping the bubbly at this surprise celebration, I shouted to one and all, “Is this what I think it is?” Everyone was in a cheerful mood as Mike got down on one knee and proposed. Of course I said, “Yes!” NUMBER OF GUESTS 175. BRIDAL GOWN My mermaid-styled gown

featured a beautiful sweetheart neckline delicately embellished with rhinestones. The skirt was fashioned with fluttering tulle and ostrich feathers and was designed by Jorge Perez de la Habana for Demetrios. WEDDING COLORS Red, black and white. SIGNATURE COCKTAIL Pomegranate martini, Jack & Coke. WEDDING CAKE The delicious marble cake with strawberry filling was accented with silver-dot candy and cream cheese frosting. FAVORITE MOMENT One of my favorite moments was when my sisters, Stacy and Sara, gave their toasts along with a slideshow of funny photos

of Mike during our courtship and engagement. I loved it and the presentation was enjoyed by our family and friends. FIRST DANCE “I Swear” by All 4 One.

WORDS THAT DESCRIBE THE DAY Art-Deco…Insane…Epic.

FAVORS FOR GUESTS Monogrammed chocolate Champagne bottles made by my talented mother. We set them in a beautiful silver box with a photo tag sticker. HONEYMOON SPOT We traveled to Maui, Kauai and Oahu. On our way back, we stopped off in San Francisco and drove along the amazingly beautiful Pacific Coast Highway to Los Angeles.

Linda &Edward BRONXVILLE, NEW YORK

PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK J. PADRONE OF FULL CIRCLE

HOW THEY MET While attending college in Providence, Rhode Island. I worked part-time at a shoe store. One day in walked Eddie and I proceeded to give him my sales pitch. Well, he never purchased shoes, but we did end up talking for over a half hour and he ended up getting my number. THE PROPOSAL It was a complete surprise! It was my birthday celebration with an overnight stay at a bed and breakfast in Newport, Rhode Island. After spending much of the day at the beach, we returned to the B&B to rest up for a romantic dinner at our favorite restaurant. Well, we never got there, because as I opened the door I found a trail of white roses leading to a picnic in the courtyard. Eddie guided me to the blanket and on one knee asked me to marry him. Unknown to me at the time, his sister was photographing all of this! Guests staying at the B&B joined in the celebration. NUMBER OF GUESTS 150. BRIDAL GOWN My ivory A-line gown featured lace and beading with low back and was designed by Demetrios. I felt absolutely beautiful! WEDDING COLORS Blue and orange. WEDDING CAKE This four-tier confection actually looked too good to eat! It was a delicious red velvet cake draped with brilliant orange blossoms. FAVORITE MOMENT When Eddie and I had a moment before the reception, we held hands and promised to savor every moment with each other. Our party still felt like it happened so fast, however we did enjoy every moment! FIRST DANCE “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” by Frankie Valli. WORDS THAT DESCRIBE THE DAY Elegant… Exciting…Picturesque. FAVORS FOR GUESTS A glass serving plate. HONEYMOON SPOT The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY GARY KAPLAN

HOW THEY MET Justin and I met through mutual friends while attending Arizona State University. It took a while, but we finally started dating and knew then we were destined to be together. THE PROPOSAL Justin had a work conference at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. At the completion of this week-long event was a formal dinner. However, we decided to leave the dinner on the early side and try our luck at the casino. Justin suggested we take the long way to the casino via the beach. So we did but soon realized this was taking forever! Lady Luck had to wait, though, because the next thing I realized Justin was on one knee asking me to marry him! Of course, I said yes, NUMBER OF GUESTS 46. BRIDAL GOWN I had two wedding dresses. The first was an ivory strapless gown with a bodice encrusted with beads and crystals. The second dress was a strapless modified sweetheart neckline and asymmetrical bodice. Both dresses were designed by Demetrios. DDING COLORS Tiffany blue and silver. SIGNATURE COCKTAIL Margaritas. WEDDING CAKE The wedding cake was so funny because we only had three choices. We selected a heart-shaped lemon cake and it was delicious. FAVORITE MOMENT Our favorite moment was our cocktail reception on a huge catamaran around the island at sunset. It was the most picturesque scene. FIRST DANCE “Marry Me” by Train. WORDS THAT DESCRIBE THE DAY Intimate… Romantic…Fun. FAVORS FOR GUESTS Since we were in Mexico, we gave our guests monogrammed beer bottle koozies. HONEYMOON SPOT Our honeymoon was in nearby Cancun at the Grand Mayan.

Barcelo Los Cabos

Live Aqua Cancun

Ever wonder why all-inclusive resorts are so popular? Well, they’re true to their name—accommodations, food and drinks, most activities, airport transfers and even tips are bundled into one price. There are no surprises and you won’t have to open your wallet during your stay. As all-inclusives have gotten more popular, they’ve also gone upscale, offering everything from high-end cuisine to fabulous spa experiences. But like margaritas, each resort has its own flavor. Which one is the best for you?

ACTION Perched on the sun-splashed southern tip of Baja, Los Cabos, this destination is for those keen on sports and adventure. The Barcelo Los Cabos Palace Deluxe (barcelo.com) is an inspired choice for on-the-go couples. On-property lures include a half-mile-wide beach, over 50,000 feet of pools and a myriad of activities including snorkeling, golf and tequila volleyball (yes, it’s exactly as it sounds—you drink the potion while hitting the ball over a net in the pool). The concierge can arrange any pursuit that strikes your fancy; whether wildlife-intensive (whale-watching, swimming with dolphins, touring turtle conservations) or sporting (surfing, scuba, snorkeling, kayaking, zip lining, parasailing, fishing). Indoor action is available at the resort’s fitness center and spa, nightly Broadway-style shows and a sports bar. SPA Set like a colonial hacienda overlooking the sapphire Sea of Cortez, Zoetry Casa del Mar Los Cabos (zoetryresorts.com) provides a fabulous getaway that highlights wellness, serenity and romance. Couples can opt for spa packages that offer multiple treatments at Suenos del Mar (Dreams of the Sea) Spa. This relaxation station features a Zen-like temple, a secluded palapa hut for beach massages and gifted practitioners with an innate sense of what you need. The spa menu showcases couple’s massages with healing Mexican elements like amaranth oil and volcanic lava stones. This boutique hotel boasts 42 ocean-view suites, with lush king-size beds, teakwood terraces, sitting rooms with plasma TVs and bar, and his-and-hers marble bathrooms with double Jacuzzis and Bulgari toiletries. By day, you can sun, snooze or stroll on the sand, laze alongside a pool or pursue personal perfection with a visit to the gym or at a dance or yoga class. Later, visit the on-

premises turtle hatchery or swirl a glass in a wine-tasting session.

FOODIES

Glorious food is a given anywhere in Mexico, but many repeat visitors believe the best cuisine south of the border is found in the Yucatan, where the Riviera Maya is located. Here, the beachfront Royal Hideaway Playacar (royalhideaway.com) has earned its reputation for fantastic food. Breakfast spotlights sweet-tart pastries and fresh juices from local fruits like guava, guanabana, papaya and mammey. High tea is served every afternoon in the hotel’s mansion-like reception area, with museum-worthy colonial paintings. Six bars mix margaritas exactly to your order, and six restaurants feature breathtaking design and exquisite eats from around the globe. The hotel’s chef, Eugenio Villafana invites guests to dine in his kitchen at the Chef ’s Table. Can’t decide between a late dinner and a show? Club Royale, a dinner theater, combines the two deliciously!

NIGHT OWLS For those who love the nightlife, there’s no Mexican destination as exciting as Cancun. Stay at Mexico’s brightest star Live Aqua Cancun (feelaqua.com), where couples have access to the coolest bars, lounges and clubs just steps away from the beachfront property. Looking to party a little closer to home? Head to the hotel’s trendiest bars, which stay open to serve chilled tequila and cerveza until the wee hours. By day, savor the restorative Aqua Spa, wander along the beach or sunbathe at any one of eight pools. WATER BABIES Located an hour east of Cancun, the island of Cozumel is a trophy destination for snorkeling, diving and beaching it. At Secrets Aura Cozumel (secretsresorts.com) guests luxuriate in sleek, modern rooms and suites equipped with free WiFi, elegant sea-view restaurants and a spa with marine-based treatments. Many junior and ocean view accommodations provide swim up suites. Just beyond the hotel’s palm-shaded beach, crystalline waters teem with vibrant sea life. The reefs are so unspoiled and exciting that you’ll want to slip into your fins every single day. Luckily, the hotel has its own pier. FORTHEBRIDEMAG.C OM

DAY TRIPPERS The BVI chain has many islands worth exploring; some have facilities, but most are better as day trips from Tortola. In addition to jaw-dropping natural beauty, many are also home to world-famous watering holes. If you’re up for a bit of adventure, add these off-the-beaten-path places to your itinerary. NORMAN ISLAND Snorkel the Caves on Norman Island (normanisland.com), the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Treasure Island. Then head to Willy T’s, a bar on an anchored schooner, features a rocking happy hour. Although you’re no longer permitted to jump off the deck, it’s still a good time! NAUTICAL PARADISE

A ROMANTIC GUIDE TO THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS. BY JILL FERGUS

With more than 40 unspoiled islands and uninhabited cays (many only accessible by boat), the Caribbean’s British Virgin Islands are a sailor’s dream come true. Along with sugar-soft beaches and crescent-shaped bays, the BVI are also steeped in history and folklore. Christopher Columbus and Sir Francis Drake explored these waters, while the infamous pirate Blackbeard plundered ships around the area. Increasing the allure of the isles are more than a half-dozen offshore shipwrecks with rumors of buried treasure. A variety of activities from sailing and snorkeling to lounging on the beach provide romance-seeking couples endless hours of adventures. Here, our top picks.

ANEGADA The northernmost point of the BVI chain is the little-known 11-mile-long island with a population of just 200. Unlike Tortola or Virgin Gorda, which are volcanic in origin, Anegada is a flat coral-and-limestone atoll. Its name means “drowned” island, and due to its remoteness, it attracts those travelers looking to truly escape. In addition to the main beach, Loblolly Bay, Anegada has plenty of serene stretches, including Flash of Beauty and Cow Wreck, where you can spread out a towel and be blissfully alone all day. Of course, nautical activities are endless—fishing for blue marlin, snorkeling at Horseshoe Reef, diving amid sunken ships and sailing around the clear waters. Many people also come here for sightings of the indigenous Anegada rock iguana, which can grow to six feet in length. And there’s also a flock of flamingos, which can be found wading in the island’s salt ponds. A favored lunch spot on Loblolly Bay is Big Bamboo, which sells sweet local lobster, grilled and served with rice and veggies. Or join the yachting crowd at one of the few local bars that serve potent Wreck Punches, a sweet mix of cane rum and fruit juices; feast on locally caught lobster and conch and take advantage of the hammocks to watch the fiery sunsets. WHERE TO STAY Among Anegada’s handful of basic hotels, a longstanding one is Neptune’s Treasure (neptunestreasure. com). The family run hotel has well-equipped rooms and a restaurant offering jerk short ribs, shrimp curry, conch fritters and mango shortcake. Neptune's Treasure

Long Bay Beach Resort & Villas

TORTOLA Mountainous Tortola is the largest and most populated island in theAsiate BVI chain. where wineIt’s celler you’ll find a wide variety of hotels and restaurants, as well as lots of nightlife and shopping options, especially around the small but busy capital of Road Town. Here, you’ll want to pick up souvenirs such as local spices and rum in the busy marketplaces. On the shores, you’ll find myriad deserted beaches, sheltered bays and stellar sunsets. Secluded Brewer’s Bay, reached via hairpin turns, is known for its snorkeling and swimming, while nearby Cane Garden Bay has a watersport’s concession and plenty of open-air cafes. Just as the sun sets, you’ll want to find yourselves in one of the many barefoot beachside bars offering lively happy hours that turn even more vivacious when night falls. One great option is Rhymer’s (canegardenbaybeachhotel.com), a family-owned hotel with a popular beachfront restaurant. Be sure to try their legendary conch fritters and rum punches. If you’re feeling adventurous, head inland to Tortola’s Sage Mountain, a 92-acre, semi-rainforest national park with the island chain’s highest point, 1,716-foot Mount Sage. WHERE TO STAY On the northern coast is Long Bay Beach Resort & Villas (longbay. com) which offers honeymooners scads of water sports and tennis courts and miles of gorgeous beach. Rooms and villas feature a modern tropical feel with rattan furnishings and brightly colored accents. Given its relative isolation, you may not be inclined to make many excursions, but luckily the 1748 Restaurant serves romantic dinners for two. FORTHEBRIDEMAG.C OM

Scenes from Rosewood Little Dix Bay

VIRGIN GORDA The island of Virgin Gorda is said to have gotten its name from Christopher Columbus, who thought it resembled a reclining woman. Though more low-key than Tortola, it still has some of the British Virgin Islands’ swankiest resorts, appealing to those who like some luxury served along with sublime natural beauty. Virgin Gorda’s most famous attraction is the Baths on the island’s southwestern tip. Here, massive boulders at the water’s edge form an eerie labyrinth of caves, caverns and tidal pools, where you can wade and swim—keep an eye out for Sally Lightfoot crabs. On the island’s west side are several pristine beaches, including Mahoe and Savannah, where snorkelers might spot sea turtles among the coral reefs. Don’t miss a chance to get a bird’s-eye view of Virgin Gorda. Climb to the top of the 1,359-foot Gorda Peak in the middle of the island for dazzling 360-degree vistas. Later, kick back at Chez Bamboo, a festive restaurant with garden seating serving Caribbean and Cajun dishes like conch gumbo and baked red snapper en papillote. At night, the eatery’s outdoor bar turns into an after-dinner hotspot with reggae music and dancing. WHERE TO STAY After a walk along the crescent-shaped beach, take a nap in the hammock in your cozy cottage at Rosewood Little Dix Bay (rosewoodhotels.com), created by Laurence Rockefeller in 1964. In the evening, as gentle tradewinds blow, enjoy a romantic dinner of grilled lobster or mahi-mahi in a coconut sauce at the alfresco Pavillion. Private, candlelit dinners on the beach can also be arranged for lovers. ½

Whether you call it the Big Easy, NOLA or Crescent City, this iconic piece of Americana on the mighty Mississippi is the place to love—again and again. COLLECTING MEMORIES Start your day with a leisurely breakfast in bed: hot beignets and coffee will set the pace. Then explore the French Quarter with its Old World shops and buildings. This section of town embodies romance, with its walled courtyards, narrow streets, tiny museums, and shops. Surprise waits around every corner and jazz spills out of every door. You’ll notice that distinctive Creole architecture combines lacy Spanish and elegant French elements, reflecting the mix of culture that give this city its continental flair. For a mid-day break, head to Tujague's (prounouced Two Jacks), where things are still done precisely as they were 157 years ago—only four authentic Creole entrees are served per day—one beef, two seafood and one chicken. All dishes are made to perfection with strict attention to detail. For dessert the kitchen also serves a heavenly bread pudding. Afterwards, stroll over to Jackson Square, where portrait artists, jazz bands, tap dancers, and fire-eaters can be seen—all in the shadow of St. Louis Cathedral, the nation’s oldest active church.
