GENERAL MANAGER

Bob King

“Alive, with others, in the moment” is the vision of our theatre. I emphasise ‘our’ asFortune Theatre is part of Dunedin and the wider region. What we present on our stages reflects our diverse community. When the 2017 Season was being developed that community was very much at the forefront of our thinking as to what plays our community wants to immerse themselves in. We believe we have achieved this with Fortune Theatre productions and partnerships with leading New Zealand theatre companies. We are confident that within the season there is something for everyone. With the interesting times we live in, Colin McColl of Auckland Theatre Company noted ‘In a world that is becoming increasingly fractured and uncertain, theatre brings people together. Theatre provides an occasion for a community to form to be entertained, to reflect, to be challenged, to celebrate, to be provoked, to escape the madness of the world outside’. We believe our 2017 Season ticks all these boxes. We are fortunate to live in Dunedin a great small city. The arts and culture sector are an important part, both in economic contribution to our economy and bringing diversity and vibrancy to our inhabitants. The importance of the sector is reflected in the Dunedin City Council’s Ara Toi Ōtepoti – Our Creative Future strategy released in 2015. We here at Fortune Theatre are proud to be part of this sector which brings life to our city. The city is also known as an education hub with national and internationally recognised centres of excellence, the University of Otago and the Otago Polytechnic. We are pleased to be able to collaborate with both these institutions in past productions, Punk Rock in 2015 with the University of Otago Theatre Studies Programme students and staff and Grounded in 2016 with students and staff of the Otago Polytechnic. We look forward to continuing these partnerships in 2017 providing students with practical experiences of theatre whether it be on stage, design or one of the many other roles which bring productions to life on our stage. Thank you for your support of Fortune Theatre, we look forward to welcoming you to our place in 2017.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Jonathon Hendry

We love living in Ōtepoti, We love living in Otago and Southland. Our work celebrates this through bringing people an experience that is alive, with others and in the moment. ALIVE Start the year off with a bang as we pop up near you in our first touring show, share in the magic of Dunedin Fringe and join some great guests to celebrate Fortune’s forty years with Roger Hall. WITH OTHERS A Fortune Company brings back both a Shakespeare and a musical to warm the winter months. This company of eight extraordinary actors will be joined by young practitioners from Dunedin and beyond. IN THE MOMENT Spring brings our second brand spanking new touring comedy and two smash hit New Zealand shows that capture the new through revisiting the past. In order to remain sustainable we’ve made some changes. For example we’re bringing a few selected shows at 11am. Also look out for more 6pm shows in winter and more daytime readings and events. 2017 brings a kids’ season of three shows directed by Jordan Dickson. Our school outreach programme grows further to include the exciting Backstage Pass initiative under the sure guidance of Shannon Colbert. There are a number of ways to work with us including the 4x4 Emerging Playwrights Initiative, various workshops and training opportunities. We’re also partnering with national companies to bring you some of the best work from elsewhere. We’re growing our relationship with local artists through a variety of collaborations. Like the southern lights we’re often only associated with nighttime but look out for us in the day as we may well be around. We strive to make theatre that is entertaining and that you are a part of rather than watching from a distance. An experience that stays with and rewards you long after we’ve been together. As we share the bumper year ahead we’ve profiled some of our local champions. Thanks for taking a look at what we’re up to. Why not join in the fun?

MY DAD’S BOY By Finnius Teppett

Directed by Anya Tate-Manning

A young man writes a play about his father, trying to figure him out. We open our 2017 season with an exciting new play My Dad’s Boy by award winning twentysomething playwright Finnius Teppett. Peter used to play for Otago and in 1985 despite a loss to the Lions in the House of Pain he came close to joining David Kirk’s All Blacks. Honest! Life hasn’t really been as simple since. His son is a chip off the old block in a 2017 kind of way. While he’s writing this play about his Dad he finds out his girlfriend is pregnant. Men, their myths and realities fuel this richly honest kiwi comedy.

I’m thrilled to tempt Dunedin actor, writer, and director Anya back down south from her extensive performance tours locally and internationally. Whether becoming Admiral Ackbar of Star Wars fame in stand up or guiding others in their work development Anya is a force for fun. Look out for My Dad’s Boy over summer as it may pop up anywhere. - Jonathon Show Times: Tuesday: 6pm Wednesday - Saturday: 7:30pm Sunday: 4pm

Autumn has arrived, students are back and an explosion of artistic anarchy happens in Dunedin over ten remarkable days. After experiencing the Dunedin Fringe in 2016 it’s been wonderful to work with festival director Josh Thomas on creating a Fringe hub. Artists from here, out of town and overseas will entertain you at both the Murray Hutchinson Studio and a new pop up auditorium on our very own Fortune main stage. This will allow us to present several shows a night all supported by our bar in the heart of the city. I can’t wait! - Jonathon 7

Roger Hall Playwright and Fortune Patron

29 April - 27 May

LAST LEGS By Roger Hall Directed by Ross Jolly

Growing old disgracefully. News that Bill English is to open a new wing of the Cambridge Retirement Village sparks a revolution amongst its residents. Though many want to turn on something special for the Deputy PM, others are less enthused and plan to stage a protest. Soon, new fractures appear along old fault lines, transforming the swanky facility into a hotbed of insurrection, intrigue and infidelity. The shenanigans and skullduggery continue right up to the last minute. With the Minister’s car only moments away, a vehicle suddenly blocks the driveway. What’s worse, it’s a hearse!

Roger Hall Play Readings The party continues throughout May as we give public readings of some key plays from Roger’s extraordinary body of work. We invite you to share your own memories with local and guest artists amid much laughter and fun. Programme details to be announced in March 2017. Supported by the Friends of Fortune.

We celebrate 40 years of presenting work from New Zealand’s most loved playwright with his irresistible new comedy Last Legs. In an exciting venture the cast and director from the original Circa production join us here in Dunedin to work with designer Peter King and others. Roger has been a huge part of our story not only as a playwright but for many years as a local theatregoer, patron and at a crucial time serving as Board Chair. He has left an indelible mark not only on us in Dunedin but all New Zealand Theatre. How wonderful to have two original cast members Ross Jolly and Ray Henwood from the world premiere of Glide Time over 40 years ago, along with other Circa favourites, join us for a month of celebration. Let the party begin! - Jonathon Show Times: Tuesday-Thursday: 6pm Friday-Saturday: 7:30pm Sunday: 4pm 11am shows: 4 May & 11May

FORTY YEARS OF FORTUNE PERSONAL MEMORIES

By Roger Hall When I first came to Dunedin, as Burns Fellow, in 1977, the Fortune was at The Athenaeum. That first year I have hazy memories of Female Transport (condemned by the ODT for its strong language); an impressive Equus, starring a young Simon O’Connor; and an ambitious Macbeth at The Regent. Alex Gilchrist and Murray Hutchinson were the co-directors and they certainly knew their Dunedin audience in a way that no one has ever quite done since. One of their triumphs was doing that fun musical, Irma La Douce, importing the very popular Yolande Gibson to play the star role. Other highlights (though I now forget the order) include the two Sondheim musicals, Pacific Overtures and Side by Side by Sondheim; Renee’s Wednesday to Come, the definitive NZ play about the Depression; the witty and elegant Les Liaisions Dangereuses, starring Bridget Armstrong; and John Godber’s hilarious and energetic Bouncers , where the eager cast of security men insisted on searching women’s handbags before they could go in and watch the play. One of the funniest of all was The Sex Fiend, Stephen Sinclair and Danny Mulheron’s delicious attack on most things PC, probably as relevant today as it was in 1990.. The most exciting and dramatic show of the lot was Deathtrap, full of thrills and so credible that when Peter Verstappen was garrotted and blood poured from his throat, one female student was convinced she’d seen a death on stage. Snuff theatre had come to Dunedin. Fortune has done more of my plays than any other theatre, and I’m grateful. They chose Middle Age Spread to open the new (current) premises. One old lady admired the building but regretted that “they hadn’t chosen a nice English play”. Alex and Murray also put on my first panto Cinderella, the first of six I was eventually to write.

Campbell Thomas directed many of my plays and often built the set as well. For The Hansard Show he re-created the Beehive’s debating chamber, and built a convincing mountain hut for the premier production of Social Climbers. Campbell’s production of the Mills and Boon musical Love off the Shelf was a big success, went to the UK and was within a whisker of getting to the West End. We disagreed occasionally. In By Degrees, I had all the mature women university students tell their story directly to the audience throughout, never to each other. Campbell wanted some dialogue, but I stuck to my guns and it worked (helped considerably by a wonderful cast). Perhaps the most fun for everyone in the theatre on both sides of the footlights was during the run of Footrot Flats when the audience was invited to attend dressed as a Footrots character. The seats were filled with multiple Wals, Dogs, Aunt Dollies, Cheeky Hobsons and several sheep. The cast sensed the added excitement, and loved peering into the audience and spotting their doppelgangers. The least fun was being on The Fortune Board, including being its Chairman for a time. The theatre was teetering on bankruptcy and the then Minister of the Arts insisted we appoint Tony Taylor as Artistic Director. Tony was a great director, but financial acumen was not his strong suit. Only many fund-raising projects including two celebrity auctions, house tours, three midwinter Sunday-afternoon lecture series, and a mammoth mystery envelope scheme together with continual support from the Friends of the Fortune and from loyal sponsors got us through. Which is how we’re here today.

TWELFTH NIGHT By William Shakespeare Directed by Benjamin Henson

Better a witty fool than a foolish wit. Shakespeare is moving back into the Fortune with this perennially rich, bold and classic. comedy. Even after 400 odd years this tale with shipwrecks, gender bending disguises, traps and some terrific party songs hasn’t lost any of its entertainment value. From the beginning of 2017 a number of local Theatre Studies students will work alongside us in every facet of the Fortune organisation to bring you this deeply rewarding meditation on loss, love and lunacy. Under the inspired direction of Benjamin Henson the 2017 Fortune Company will join them to deliver some playful pyrotechnics.

In 2016 Benjamin Henson joined us as part of The Engine Room Programme with Auckland Theatre Company and New Zealand Opera. Working alongside him it became clear that he would be the perfect choice to direct Twelfth Night. In early 2016 he wowed audiences with two sellout productions at Auckland’s Pop-up Globe. His sense of adventure and daring is perfect as we look to build our 2017 company around one of the best plays ever written. - Jonathon Show Times: Tuesday-Thursday: 6pm Friday-Saturday: 7:30pm Sunday: 4pm 11am shows: 6 July 13 July

INTO THE WOODS Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Book by James Lapine Directed by Jonathon Hendry Musical Direction by Mark Dorrell

An enchanting musical journey from America’s greatest living composer Crammed with magical moments this 1987 Tony Award winning musical resonates in surprising ways today. This is not exactly the tale you remember as a childless baker with his wife along with Cinderella, Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood, Jack (amongst others) combat giants, break spells and strive for happiness. As each decade passes new generations discover the delights of Sondheim and Lapine’s mashup masterwork. Warm the cold Dunedin winter and take a parent or child on a brilliant adventure into the woods and out again with the 2017 Fortune company. Originally Directed on Broadway by James Lapine Licensed exclusively by Music Theatre International (Australasia). All performance materials supplied by Hal Leonard Australia

We have long talked about doing this show together. It is quite simply magic. Having guided Sondheim work on London’s West End Mark brings vast skill to our second company production. This surprising reimagining of a remarkable musical will include the best emerging young talent from Dunedin and beyond alongside our core company. Through the production, forums and workshops we want to make Into The Woods a lasting experience for as many people as possible. - Jonathon Show Times: Tuesday-Thursday: 6pm Friday-Saturday: 7:30pm Sunday: 4pm 11am Show: 10 August 17 August

THAT BLOODY WOMAN Time to rock the vote

By Luke Di Somma and Gregory Cooper Directed by Kip Chapman

Kate’s back: a kickass role model for equality and people power. May her message continue to roll out across the country. -Metro Magazine New Zealand’s smash hit rock musical That Bloody Woman is back. Our favourite daughter, suffragist, activist and cyclist Kate Sheppard is transformed from the face on the $10 note into a feminist firebrand raising hell and rocking out. Fresh from sell out seasons at Auckland Theatre Company and The Court Theatre, Kate takes the show on the road in 2017.

Experiencing this extraordinary New Zealand musical at The Court Theatre alongside so many delighted women and men of all ages was a highlight of 2016. As topical, fearless and fun as the title suggests, bring a grandparent if you can and get ready to rock! - Jonathon

“Bursting with wit, verve and righteously rocking tunes”, That Bloody Woman presents New Zealand’s founding mother like you’ve never seen her before; loud, proud and in your face. Leading the charge to win women the vote, Kate takes on the patriarchy, public opinion and even Prime Minister Richard ‘King Dick’ Seddon.

ONE PERFECT MOMENT By Ellie Smith

Directed by Jonathon Hendry

“I’m going insane! I want to see something that’s not hanging from a clothesline! I need to do something with my life!” Based on first hand experiences with her own daughter, One Perfect Moment is Ellie Smith’s hilarious new work about a mother running from her sixtieth birthday by hauling her daughter on the trip of a lifetime to Europe. The idyllic holiday Pammie had planned is soon flipped on its head. As it turns out 24/7 contact may be a little too much for this pair.

Whether as Edith Piaf, Judy Garland or Sondheim’s Mrs Lovett celebrated actress Ellie Smith has extraordinary transformative power and warmth. Her writing is equally vital and loving. This two-hander comedy gem has either actress play not only themselves but each other and a very colourful world out there. - Jonathon
