Fakeman’s Hot Takes

A N D

If there’s one thing to take away from the Cowboys’ 11-pick haul in this year’s class, it’s that the purported focus on “the right kind of guy” left The Star with Jason Garrett. (That the likes of Zeke Elliott, Greg Hardy, David Irving, and Randy Gregory don or donned stars on their helmets during his tenure might prove the mantra was mere lip service, anyway.) Jerry — no doubt sensing his number of remaining years shrinking and throwing caution to the proverbial nor’easter to “win now” — added plenty of questionable character to top the war room’s seemingly knee-jerk boom-or-bust selections. As I forewarned in our pre-draft coverage last week, Dallas’ front office found themselves without their preferred options at their biggest position of need when they picked at 10 in the first. Corners Jaycee Horn and Patrick Surtain were sniped by Carolina and Denver, respectively, and any other corner at that point would have been a big reach. Contrary to silly denunciations of trading with a division rival wiped out, Jerry pulled a nifty one when he accepted an additional third rounder from the hated

Bo Jacksboro’s Meltdown

God fucking damn it. This year’s draft class felt more like an episode of The Price Is Right than a serious attempt to improve the team. Who the fuck is Nahshon Wright? That’s what letting Byron Jones walk nets you in a comp pick? Come on down, Nashon! You’re the next “project” spare in the secondary. Shoutout to Matt

Johnson (fourth-round pick in 2012) and Akwasi Owusu-Ansah (fourth-rounder in 2010), both of whom went on to wash out in the Canadian football League. And Chauncey Golston in the third round? Apparently, when you have a chance to add sixth-round talent in the third, you have to jump. Was Will McClay using hot dog water in his bong on Day 2? I hated the hiring of Head Coach Mike McCarthy at the time it was announced, but one nugget from his opening press conference gave me hope. When answering a question about his personal draft preference, he said the team would pick the most talented guy available and craft the offense or defense around his strengths. Last year’s draft seems to fit that philosophy and is considered one of the better hauls in the league. This year, however, the front office seemed to have a very specific blueprint for the type of players they wanted: guys who suck. Zing! I’m only sort of joking. If you weren’t a 6’4” defensive back or didn’t carry a long rap sheet (more on that pun later), you need not apply to the ’21 Cowboys class — one that will be remembered by many as the draft that Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn put his stank all over. The ’Boys walked into the party with a historically bad defense, an aging O-line, and hell-mouth-sized holes throughout the roster. Day 1 started with Carolina and Denver snagging the two best corners in the class, but tackle Rashawn Slater was still on the board at Pick 10. The front office relieved the Eagles of a third-rounder and moved back two slots. Slater, my dream pick, was still in play. Instead of shoring up a so-called strength, the team went with its alleged best available player, linebacker Micah Parsons. I was frustrated by the pick, but “Hey,” I thought. “They got a guy who can play, and maybe he won’t go full-on Martín Gramática every time he makes a play a la

Jaylon Smith.” The more I thought about it, the less I hated it. Still, with better players at more urgent positions of need on the board, I gave the pick a solid B. In Round 2, the Raiders leap-frogged ahead of the Cowboys to steal TCU safety Trevon Moehrig, but Jerry and Co. hit back with Kelvin Joseph, a triple-threat corner, who is also a shitty rapper and apparently a bad person — coaching staffs at both LSU and Kentucky asked him to stop showing up. Athletically, he’s off the charts. Most scouts see him as a first-round talent with a canned ham for a brain, but if the team gets into a rap battle … they’re still going to lose. Dude’s got weak flow. Just because Dan Quinn gives off Dr. Phil vibes, I’m giving the pick a C+. The Cowboys’ third round was the dumbest thing I’ve seen in sports since Mark Sanchez’s butt fumble. I don’t want to talk about it. Grade F for FUUUUCK. Thank God LSU linebacker Jabril Cox fell to the team at Pick 115 on Day 3. This almost salvaged Day 2 for me. Never mind the front office opted for serial domestic assaulter Josh Ball with its next pick. The team made some smart choices up and down the board all day, though — like bear-hog Quinton Bohanna, who weighs more than a used Buick — and freaky athlete corner Israel Mukuamu. This whole day gets a B-plus from me thanks to some bottom-ofthe-roster potential. My overall grade for the draft is a C. Parsons will likely make an immediate impact, and hopefully he and Cox will erase the twin stains of Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander-Glass-Doll at linebacker. I’m not sure any other pick outside of Bohanna will have an immediate impact, and I am sad about investing the last six months learning about this stuff. I’m just going to do it all again next season, because the Stockholm Syndrome runs deep. God fucking damn it. — BJ l

In this year’s NFL draft, the Cowboys consistently saw coveted players go off the board just before they could pick them. Did the silver and blue deftly adjust or just hit the panic button? Our crack analysts slap some grades on Jerry and Co.’s efforts.

Eagles to drop two measly slots, only to select the player they were likely going to take at 10 anyway. That pick, Penn State’s Micah Parsons, could be the most talented defensive player in the draft, but since his off-field behavior is concerning and since he represents yet another premium pick burned on a run-and-hit linebacker in a league that sees that position further devalued by the year, the selection reeked of panic. Speaking of panic, sitting idle in the second round while six teams traded up in front of the Cowboys to pick the cupboard bare of the remaining top-tier secondary help forced Dallas to settle for rapper Bossman Fat, né Kentucky corner Kelvin Joseph, a player so in love with pot, he got booted out of the LSU program. (Yes, LSU!) The choice seemed a desperation play. The third round started a little better as the ’Boys added some size and speed on the defensive line with UCLA tackle Osa Odighizuwa and an edge rusher in Iowa’s Chauncey Golston. Then, in one of the biggest reaches of the entire draft, new D Coordinator Dan Quinn plunged his hand to the very bottom of the well to turn in a card for Oregon State corner Nahshon Wright, a player many media scouts had as an undrafted free agent, at 99. Jerry and the gang would make up for a little of that blunder with their first selection in the fourth with LSU linebacker Jabril Cox — maybe the best coverage linebacker in the draft and one of the better value picks of the weekend. As concerning as Parsons and Joseph may be, the fourth-round pick of troubled OT Josh Ball was enough to sour many (including myself) on the entire draft. Smoking a little devil’s cabbage pales in comparison to Ball’s 11 (!!) documented charges of domestic abuse, an undeniable top talent at the position but not a player anyone of conscience could ever root for. The Cowboys rounded out Day 3 with some future practice squad guys and camp bodies with giant Stanford receiver Simi Fehoko; Joseph’s former teammate at Kentucky, D tackle Quinton Bohanna; South Carolina corner Israel Mukaumu; and Nebraska guard Matt Farniok. With eight picks dedicated to his side of the ball, Quinn has plenty of new toys to help churn the Cowboys’ dismal defensive roster. Whether the potential talent overcomes the potential off-field issues remains to be seen. All told, a pretty typical Dallas Cowboys draft. Grade: B. — TF

The finals were done and not a moment too soon. It was 2004, and I had made it to yet another last day of school. On the porch of my portable at Amon Carter-Riverside High School, I was one exhausted teacher but deeply happy to have notched one more year in my belt. As always, a couple of stragglers came by to say their goodbyes. I wished them all a happy and safe summer. Then I caught sight of two of my former-ESL students, walking hand in hand. They were the cutest couple you’d ever want to see, Mirna Dominguez and Fernando Vitolas, both bright and engaging young people. As they passed, I gave Fernando a deep bow and shouted out, “Congratulations, senior!” He smiled and nodded a slight acknowledgment. I didn’t feel slighted, though. They were both in the moment — glad school was finally over,

Don’t Want the Vax? Then Forfeit Medical Care

6

Here’s an idea. Don’t want the vaccine? Because TFG (The Former Guy) said COVID-19 was a hoax, even though he jumped the line for the vax and absorbed it quicker than a rail of granulated Adderall up his dumb, racist, sexist orange nose? Or because you think the vaccine is in some way a better means by which the government can track your words and deeds than your smartphone? Or because you clearly didn’t take elementary school too seriously and think conspiracies are the truth? Good. Don’t get the vax, but

in return for forgoing it, you need to sign a document declining medical care once you become sick. So sure that COVID is a hoax? Put your money where your coughing mouth is. In a way, it’s a win-win for all of us. You get to take a stand against whatever it is you’re taking a stand against — science? logic? compassion? common sense? — and we reasonable folks get to live on with less competition for natural resources. As one of my best friends calls it: “thinning out the herd.” Please, be our guest. I’ll draw up the paperwork. So. Maybe it appears that I am wishing death upon my fellow Americans. It may seem that way, but I’m not doing anything that rogue cops aren’t doing constantly to Black citizens or to what the Republican party isn’t doing every minute

to all of us by espousing the Big Lie, that somehow President Joe Biden (President Joe Biden) stole the election from TFG. It’s stunning to think that there are millions of people out there — some of them honest people, some of them in my fucking family — who believe not only the Big Lie but that the vaccine is somehow dangerous. Holy shit, you feel bad for a day or two afterward. Must be a government ploy to poison you because you’re soooo important. Can you say “snowflake”? I knew ya could. There’s an old saying that you can’t live someone else’s life for them. In this case, we reasonable folks are doing all we can to ensure our — let’s say “special” — loved ones get the damn vax. There comes a point when you need to cut the cord. This is where I am now.

There’s another old saying I have at the ready. It says that your right to swing your fist ends at my nose, and by not getting vaccinated, like a normal, reasonable person, you mouth-breathers are setting us months if not years back from achieving herd immunity. Funny, but weren’t you right-wingers preaching herd immunity a few months ago? Why is it that you same people are trying to avoid achieving your goal? Hmm. I wonder. Could it have anything to do with TFG’s resounding defeat at the polls? Guess we’ll never know. — Anthony Mariani The Weekly welcomes submissions of all political persuasions. worked with die before their time shook me to the core every time it happened. This accident also points to how many of us underestimate the primal power of water. Living around the Trinity River and the creeks that run into it, we all become complacent, forget about those times their swirling muddy eddies, filled with branches and fast-food flotsam, rise, surge, and kill. We become so used to it we see it as something that we have tamed. Walking or cycling beside it, we smell it, its saltiness, its sometimes effluent stink. As we go about our business, we drive over bridges and shake our heads at how low the Trinity has gotten, how sometimes it meanders like a creek, barely trickling through the city. And at times, our creeks aren’t even puddles. We forget we live at the confluence of the Clear and West forks — that, yes, practically dries up sometimes — but at other times, it and the creeks running into it are a rushing torrent that have the proven ability to kill. Since there are so many local governments along the river, the number of people who annually drown in the Trinity is hard to pin down, but if you google “Drownings in the Trinity River,” you’re sure to receive tons of results. And no matter what the exact number is, the answer is too many drown in the Trinity. Spring has returned to North Texas. Yellow oak pollen covers our cars, flowers bloom, trees are reborn, and, even after COVID-19 and the snowpocalypse or because of them, a spring returns to our steps, but it is also that time of year when storms pop up quickly and low water crossings become death traps. Despite our very human hubris in thinking we control nature, even in 2021, we don’t completely. l

looking forward to the summer, and just happy to be alive. That was the year we had the big June storm right after school let out. In my neighborhood, it knocked out electricity. It wasn’t so bad. The rain and clouds cooled the air so that it wasn’t as sweltering here as usual, and we were fine living without AC for a little while. Just out of the hotplate of high school teaching, somewhat akin to herding feral cats, living without electricity totally relaxed me so much so that after our power returned, I went by my portable to clean up my files, a yeoman’s task I would have normally put off until closer to August. Afterward, as I went out to my car, I felt especially virtuous for being such a conscientious teacher. That feeling of earned virtue didn’t last. When I crossed the street, one of my old students, a junior in his hopped-up car, stopped me. He rolled down his window and asked me a question I never wanted to hear, “Have you heard about Fernando and Mirna?” I shook my head. With a face etched with pain, he told me that during the storm, Fernando’s car was washed off a bridge that went over a creek that ran into the Trinity. Two of his best friends were now dead. I could tell he was badly shaken by this news. All I could do was listen. Inside, I was just stunned. That sight of Fernando and Mirna on the last day of school so full of life flashed through my mind. I asked myself, How could it be they were gone? It’s one of the saddest things teachers deal with — the death of a student. It occurred way too often in my career. I know we’re not family or best friends, but we see our students 180-some odd days in the year. To see such fine young people I’ve

ith five strong mayoral candidates that included two city councilmembers, a runoff election for Fort Worth’s top office was always likely if not inevitable. Tarrant County Democratic Party Chair Deborah Peoples took in 22,352 votes, which amounted to roughly one-third of the ballots counted, while Mattie Parker, former chief of staff for city council and the mayor, came in a close second with 20,501 votes. Councilmembers Brian Byrd and Ann Zadeh earned 15% and 9% of ballots cast, respectively. Local business owner Steve Penate, who was largely unknown in local political circles, surprised many by pulling in around 9% of the votes for mayor. Jen Sarduy, who made social and economic justice central to her campaign, came in second at 17%. When Byrd ran for mayor, he left the District 3 race without an incumbent candidate. Michael Crain, Byrd’s district director, will soon represent the district, which includes swaths of West and Southwest Fort Worth. Crain earned just over 71% of 11,400 votes cast. retirement from public office in January, three frontrunners sought the district that includes Arlington Heights, and two conservative candidates are now in a runoff. Leonard Firestone, co-founder of TXWhiskey, has the endorsement of Mayor Price and outgoing councilmember Shingleton. Firestone lists his top issues as lower homeowner property taxes, safe neighborhoods, and traffic mobility. Business consultant Zeb Pent is a proponent of fiscal responsibility and an outspoken critic of gender expression. Five years ago, he blasted Fort Worth school leadership for allowing students to use the restroom of their self-identified gender. Firestone and Pent will compete for the District 7 seat on June 5. Neither remaining candidate responded to my requests for comment on their campaigns. A cursory glance at Pent’s active Twitter page (@ ZebPent) shows that he frequently retweets bogus claims of a stolen 2020 presidential election and other rightwing conspiracy theories. “Zeb Pent is unquestionably dangerous to our city,” said Lee Henderson, who came in third at the polls. “His lack of Fort Worth values makes him the wrong choice in this race and for public office altogether.” District 8’s runoff will pit Christopher Nettles, a community leader and small business owner, against incumbent Kelly Allen Gray, who marginally led Nettles 46% to 43.5%. District 9, which encompasses downtown, the Near Southside, and parts of South Fort Worth, was arguably the most contentious race. Political newcomer Jordan Mims, a queer Black waiter, launched a grassroots campaign that called for social justice and police reforms. He earned just over 9% of District 9 votes while Ricardo Avitia, founder of Hemphill No Se Vende (Hemphill Is Not for Sale), took in just over 3% of votes

councilmember after pulling in 63% of ballots cast in her Eastside district. Councilmember Jungus Jordan, who has represented District 6 since 2005, will face Jared Williams in the June 5 runoff. Public outrage over a police union flyer may bolster Williams’ chances of unseating Jordan, the police union’s favored candidate. In late April, District 6 voters received a flyer that endorsed Jordan and listed four candidates who were not seeking public office at the time. Tiesa Leggett, one of three candidates at the time, was left off the political ad entirely. Fort Worth Police Officers’ Association president Manny Ramirez told the Star-Telegram that the flyer was a mistake. “Omitting me was a way to mute me BUT I AM HERE,” Leggett wrote on Facebook in response to the patently false and misleading flyer. “This flyer speaks volumes about the exclusionary climate of our community.” Jordan’s office did not return my phone call. Fort Worth’s police union also declined to respond to my questions. After District 7 Councilmember Dennis Shingleton announced his

Fort Worth School Board Results and the Race for Texas’ 6th Congressional District In February, U.S. Rep. Ron Wright died from complications related to COVID-19. His widow, Susan Wright,

entered the Congressional race along with 22 other candidates. While official elections results are still pending, Wright and state Rep. Jake Ellzey (both Republicans) are slated to compete for the district that overlaps Southeast Fort Worth and parts of Ellis and Navarro counties to the south. Fort Worth school district trustees Daphne Brookins (District 4) and Anael Luebanos (District 8) won their reelection bids while challenger Michael Ryan (District 7) unseated Norman Robbins, who was first elected in 2004. District 9 was vacated when Ashley Paz announced that she would not seek reelection. Unofficial county results show that candidates Roxanne Martinez and Cade Lovelace will compete in a runoff election for that district. Jacinto Ramos Jr. ran unopposed to retain his District 1 seat.

Tarrant Regional Water District Board The Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) is tasked with providing safe and reliable drinking water to around 2 million Tarrant County residents and 10 nearby counties. TRWD’s five-member board oversees operations at the water district and construction at Panther Island, the $1.2 trillion development and flood control project on the North Side. Three board seats were up for grabs last week. Two incumbents, Leah King and James Hill, were reelected while former TRWD board member Mary Kelleher, who served from 2013 to 2017, ousted TRWD board president Jack Stevens. Current board members Marty Leonard and Jim Lane are not up for reelection until 2023. Kelleher said she ran a “bare bones” campaign with the help of friend and community leader Layla Caraway. “I felt like I really had the support of the people,” Kelleher said. “It was a lot of networking and talking with people on the phone. Facebook was used a lot. I think people want to know more about the water district. We tried to let them know more about what the water district did. I think people recognize the fact that I will provide transparency and accountability.” Kelleher said her priorities will be helping the board select a new general manager, protecting TRWD’s water supply, and finding a sustainable path for the Panther Island development. “Jim Oliver will be retiring after 35 years,” she said, referring to Oliver’s recent public statements. “It will be important to select the right person to replace him.”

tallied. The runoff pits lawyer and U.S. military veteran Elizabeth Beck (43%) against community leader and active Texas Army National Guard member Fernando Peralta (12.5%). Beck said in a phone interview, “We are keeping our foot on the gas, talking to voters, and knocking on doors.” If elected to represent District 9, Beck said her priorities would be to create “good jobs and to make sure the city focuses on bringing back our economic base. We need to bring our tax base back. The city took a hit with COVID. I can make sure that every child has what they need to be successful when they go to school. We should invest equitably around District 9 by creating a culture that truly celebrates our diversity and lifts up our communities of color [so] they are at the table and opportunity exists for every child in this city, regardless of neighborhood and ZIP code.” Beck said parts of this city, like the communities that founded Hemphill No Se Vende, feel left out of the local political process. “The reason there is distrust with the city is that we have not done a good job of meeting the communities where they are at,” Beck said. “We expect engagement to look the same across the city. That’s not practical. What works for one neighborhood doesn’t necessarily work in the next. We need a councilperson who understands that. Instead of telling [those communities] what to do, work with them and find out what they need. Development of [the Hemphill] corridor is going to happen regardless. When you have high property values next to low property values, what happens? Do we want to shape that in the way that is most beneficial to the community? For me, that answer is yes. We need to make sure we are ensuring that very vibrant, generational communities are not being uprooted for investment purposes.” Beck said she chose to run for city council because she saw the chance to drive drastic change in Fort Worth. “There is an opportunity for us to pivot as a city and decide where we want to go,” Beck said. “My sincere hope for the city is that this new leadership is committed to Fort Worth.” Peralta did not respond to my request for comment.

Fort Worth’s police union sent District 6 voters erroneous election information.

Federal funding for Panther Island has stalled, although one TRWD director said those funds have by no means dried up (“Progress Coming to Panther Island?” Sept. 2020). The expansive project includes three bridges, a riverwalk, residential projects, and attractions that promise to one day transform swaths of Fort Worth’s North Side into a waterfront tourist destination. Though Kelleher has been a vocal critic of the project, Panther Island has advanced to the point where construction cannot be reasonably stopped or reversed. The White Settlement Road Bridge recently opened, and project leaders have promised that sections of a San Antoniostyle riverwalk will open by year’s end. “I think it will have to be a privatepublic partnership,” Kelleher said. “It wouldn’t be right for the [taxpayers] to pay. From what I understand, there’s no more money earmarked for the project. I

would really like to see if it is too late to have a feasibility study that does a costbenefit analysis. That may be one reason why the federal dollars have stopped.” Kelleher’s first term in office was partly defined by her poking and prodding for TRWD documents and insisting on greater transparency by board members. She still sees herself as the outsider who will always put the public over private interests, but there are pressing matters at hand. She said she looks forward to working with her colleagues on TRWD’s board. “I’ve grown up a lot since my first term,” she said. “I’m going to work a lot harder to do more. That’s what I’m hoping to do, to help encourage discussions at the board level.” l

The campaign to make Mother’s Day a national holiday first began in 1907, when Anna Jarvis memorialized her mother, Ann Reeves Garvis — a peace activist who worked tirelessly to help the wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War. In 1908, the U.S. Congress rejected her proposal, but by 1911, all the individual states observed Mother’s Day as a holiday. By 1920, Hallmark Cards had created a line of Mother’s Day greeting cards, and the rest? Well, here we are. Here in the 2020s, we can still get those Hallmark cards at the grocery store and at a few locally owned Hallmark Gold Stores such as Gene Allen Gifts (255 SW Plaza, Arlington, 817-478-4788), Norman’s Hallmark Shop (4620 Bryan Irvin Rd, Ste 540, Fort Worth, 817-294-8808), or Trudy’s

Hallmark (1110 W Arbrook Blvd, Ste 104, Arlington, 817-467-6562). But we’ve also evolved.

When opening the first Vietnamese distillery of its kind in America, raised eyebrows were to be expected — but not calls from Australia in the middle of the night regarding the liquor’s availability or a couple from Switzerland adding the distillery to their travel itinerary or a handwritten letter postmarked from

Virginia by an 80-year-old Vietnamese lady requesting a bottle be mailed to her. To that point, no one would ever have expected a nondescript building off a parkway through Kennedale to be the site for the recreation of such an ambiguous spirit, ambiguous because although it’s ricebased alcohol, it carries the label of whole grain and potato-made vodka, ambiguous because its name remains taboo in Vietnam due to its history as the moonshine of their culture, and ambiguous because its return from obscurity represents a newfound respect rooted in heritage. The families of Suy Dinh and Tien Ngo emigrated here after the Vietnam War, settling in the Arlington area, which boasts one of the largest Vietnamese populations in America. (Houston is the only other Texas city in the Top 10.) Growing up as friends, their bond grew stronger as brothers-in-law and now as entrepreneurs of the new SuTi (Soo-tee) Craft Distillery. By trade, Ngo is an architect for commercial real estate, including several bars as well as the intelligently designed tasting room heavy with vintage Vietnamese accents complete with a Honda moped (both are avid riders), while Dinh was a software engineer by profession who is now fully retired to concentrate on distillation and operations. Just how distinctive is the bottled product being boiled south of Arlington? SuTi’s Ruou De, or grass liquor, is the first

rice-based Vietnamese liquor made in the States. Think: Japanese sake or Korean soju — both rice-based as sweet or rice wines. While those clock in around 14% alcohol content — similar to that of wine — Ruou De floats between 40-45%. Dinh became interested in Ruou De after being asked to learn by an older friend in 2016. Building permits began in 2018, and tanks arrived on Labor Day in 2019 with a November 2020 opening. Ruou De was once a celebrated spirit that’s party came to a halt during the communist regime of Northern Vietnam’s prohibition, thus drying the country of the legal variant. Much like moonshine in America, illegal variations of Ruou De sprung forth, keeping the people full of rotgut. De is grass that can grow upwards of 10 feet, which provided ample coverage to distill in grass fields akin to what occurred in the heavily wooded Appalachians with moonshine. Due to the bastardizing of the popular spirit during the prohibition, Ruou De now carries a negative connotation in Vietnam, so it’s simply called vodka. That doesn’t negate the fact that this spirit is still enjoyed to this day. Especially amongst the aging Vietnamese population, in which the taste harks to pre-war memories. The two products that Dinh and Ngo decided to focus on are the Lion 45 and Old Man. The Lion 45 comes from long grain rice grown along the Gulf Coast in Beaumont whereas the Old Man is made of a Louisiana-grown hybrid rice named Jazzman developed by Louisiana State University professor and rice breeder Steven Linscombe to compete with

aromatic rice like jasmine imported from Southeast Asia. While Lion 45 is SuTi’s “Americanized” version, in which character commonalities align with that of vodka, Old Man’s flavor is defined by an initial sweetness before a rice aftertaste that the Vietnamese prefer as a complement to their cuisine. Each recipe has one hour of cook time followed by five hours of fermentation before an eight-hour distillation and one-month aging process. A tour of SuTi distillery displays shiny stainless steel and copper equipment imported from Germany and fermentation tanks that yield aromas of sweet bread. Unlike many other distillers who brag about their distillation amounts, Dinh maintains a single distillation to avoid a loss of flavor. To prepare for their endeavor, Ngo traveled to Vietnam and purchased topshelf versions of the drink and attended educational conferences as far away as Wisconsin. Dinh invested much of his time with older Vietnamese immigrants doing taste tests until the co-owners felt confident enough in their product to move forward. Old Man’s title is a hat tip to this aging Vietnamese generation, specifically those who helped Dinh rekindle the Ruou De flavor. As somber post-wartime Vietnamese tunes of loss circle on the reel-to-reel Teac, after a couple shots into the day, Dinh and Ngo remain eager but hesitant to expand, selling only on-site. Their patience shows a willingness to learn and with that, Dinh hints at the possibility of a future product, a rice-based port liquor all the way from Kennedale, Texas. l

HearSay Weekend Shows

Now that mean ol’ COVID-19 appears to be going bye-bye and since most of us nonmouth-breathers have gotten vaccinated, the time is now for some springtime show-going.

M AY 5 - 1 1 , 2 0 2 1

fwweekly.com

The last show that Meach Pango played pre-lockdown was at the John Ed Keeter Public Library. That’s not the tongue-incheek name of a hipster bar. It’s an actual library in Saginaw. I was there. It was actually the last show I attended before COVID-19 sent live music to a screeching halt. There was an odd vibe that afternoon. The band was playing an event called Libraryfest along with a handful of other Fort Worth groups. The show was set to take place in a field behind the library, but due to inclement weather, it had to be brought indoors at the last minute. I got Meached for the first time right there in front of the fiction section. “It’s pretty funny to think about our

MUSIC

last show being in our hometown library,” recalled guitarist Jared Loftis, laughing, as he and his bandmates spoke with me over the phone. “It felt like we were doing something wrong.” The show was intimate but tightly packed with about as many people you could fit into a library without creating a fire hazard. It was buzzing with the neon electric joy that Meach Pango specializes in. There were lots of smiles, lots of laughs, and a lot of people dancing. It’s definitely the most fun any of us in attendance ever had in a library. “I think everyone kind of knew it was gonna be the last time we saw live music for a while,” said guitarist Tony Coffman. “It could’ve been the last time we ever played.” Thankfully, it was not the last time Meach Pango ever played. “A couple of us lived together throughout quarantine, so we were always around each other,” said frontman Alex Mackenzie. “It didn’t really hold us back.” The band continued to meet up for practices to keep their morale high and their skills sharp, despite the impossibility of performing live shows throughout the duration of lockdown. “At the end of the day I feel like not meeting up to practice would be almost impossible, and it would kill what we had going,” Loftis said. “We had a whole tour set up for the week after the lockdown started, and all that went down the drain, which was kind of a bummer, so the only thing we had was meeting and practicing. Obviously, we didn’t play any shows. We just hung out and played music, just like we did when we were high schoolers.” With new single “Wander” dropping in April, followed closely by the music video released last week, Meach Pango is back to generating forward momentum

The video for Meach Pango’s “Wander” nicely encapsulates what it was like being an artist during lockdown.

again. “Wander” was recorded and produced with the help of Ben Barnett in Hurst at The Hang, where the band also recorded their first two albums. “When we started writing it, we didn’t intend for it to be some self-referential quarantine-type thing,” Mackenzie said. “It just sort of played out that way. It’s about just isolating yourself and being by yourself.” “Wander” manages to take the heavy topic of isolation and reverse it, injecting it with the kind of bright, energetic riffs Meach Pango is known for. Their upbeat rock-pop sound is laced with just the slightest hints of ska, and it shakes the COVID blues immediately. It is really hard not to dance to it. The “Wander” video was shot in Fort Worth at The Funktion, a small venue and

creative space, with the help of Ocular Pop Films (married couple Kirstin and Austin Black). Ocular Pop has been close with the band since their inception in 2016 and have maintained a tight relationship with Meach Pango ever since, having helped the band with their first major photoshoot and since assisting them with several other projects, including “Wander.” Mackenzie said “Wander” may be the best thing they’ve ever collaborated on. “We’ve done five or six full-length videos,” he continued, “and out of all of them, I think this one is definitely the one we’re most proud of. I think being pent up for so long and not being able to have that creative release just forced us to do something that we think is one of the best things we’ve done creatively.” They have every right to be proud. The video for “Wander” is smoooooth. The transitions are seamless but energetic, working in harmony with the song’s refined up-tempo groove. It brings to life Mackenzie’s long-term aspiration of shooting a video in one solid take, without cuts. The whole video has an intimate feeling that drives home the single’s relatability. The video opens on the band in a dark room, dimly illuminated by overhead lights and the glow of several television monitors. It pans between shots of the full band and shots in which each bandmember is alone playing in an empty room, underlining the feeling of what it’s like to be a musician in isolation. “Wander” is an emotionally accessible anthem that puts to words what nearly all of us have been feeling during the pandemic, and the video complements that.
