As we do every year around this time, we have put together a Holidays-themed issue to celebrate all the good stuff happening (and that’s for sale) around North Texas and to prepare ourselves for the greatness that will be 2021: a potential vaccine, a fresh outlook, and, most importantly, a chance to come together and heal. Putting all of the divisiveness of the past few years behind us, we can focus on what brings us together instead of what divides us. And there’s no better time for coming together (as long as we’re 6 feet apart) than the holidays. And here we are, offering you an issue chock full of all sorts of juicy info and stories. From a look at local nonprofits to the hottest video games and seasonal drink recipes, the Fort Worth Weekly’s annual Holidays issue has you covered. (Big props to coverguy Tony Green. Feliz Navidad, man.) Part of the festivities around these parts this year include the National Finals Rodeo. Taking place at Globe Life Field in Arlington from Friday thru Dec 12, the “Super Bowl of rodeo” also features Cowboy Christmas, a shopping extravaganza with live entertainment. Best of all, NFR gives us the opportunity to dust off our cowboy hats and so some socially distant mingling. (NFR will be following strict safety measures throughout the event.) And we know Fort Worth will show up and show out, so allow us to point newcomers to Fort Worth and environs in the right direction. For some boot scootin’, the Stockyards offer a plethora of fun locales, especially the new Mule Alley section. For some youthful exuberance, pilot the Uber driver to the West 7th or West Exchange, and for either a dive-bar experience or a fancy craft cocktail, the Near Southside’s West Magnolia Avenue or South Main Village are here for you. Wherever you go, practice social distancing and wear a mask. Keeping others safe is the best way to keep yourself free from harm. Happy Holidays! — Anthony Mariani

The curtains opened, revealing a scene familiar to many Fort Worthians: the retro, brightly colored back alley sign that welcomes music lovers to Scat Jazz Lounge. Standing beneath the entryway, Texas Ballet Theater dancer Kamryn Spell began to strut as upbeat New Orleans jazz set a playful mood. Spell, with a beaming smile, erupted with buoyant foxtrot steps and spins as her solo performance turned latenight downtown Fort Worth into a magical stage that summoned the unbridled optimism of the Roaring ’20s. Spectacle was choreographed by dancer/choreographer Riley Moyano as one of dozens of solo premieres performed, recorded, and edited by TBT dancers this past October. TBT artistic director Ben Stevenson, O.B.E., came up with the

idea of featuring different dancers throughout that month. “There were quite a lot of solos put out,” Stevenson said. “Some were really good. It was something exciting that we wouldn’t have done before. It doesn’t mean we are happy to have the virus, but we wouldn’t have come to that point in our imagination if we had not been thinking, ‘What can we do

now?’ ” In March, the rapid spread of COVID-19 across North Texas and the world necessitated the abrupt cancellation of in-person ballet performances. TBT executive director Vanessa Logan said the nonprofit’s classes were quickly brought online as in-person rehearsals and concerts were

TBT is the resident ballet company of both Dallas and Fort Worth, but its roots and current home are local. The performing arts group was founded as the Fort Worth Ballet Association in 1961 under the direction of its founder and local ballet icon Margo Dean. In 1988, the company began producing performances of The Nutcracker in Dallas after the

demise of Dallas Ballet. TBT’s current artistic director — Ben Stevenson, whose past career as a principal dancer with English National Ballet and ongoing work as a choreographer have won him international awards and acclaim — joined the organization in 2003. The addition of Stevenson marked the beginning of TBT’s current reputation as an organization that offers beginner lessons to children as young as 3, careers for professional dancers, and opportunities for serious students to prove themselves on the stage of Bass Performance Hall in front of thousands of viewers. The company also provides free ballet lessons to more than 1,000 students through TBT’s CityDance program, which partners with

local community centers and elementary schools across North Texas. TBT reaches an additional 30,000 students through free matinee shows of Peter and the Wolf and The Nutcracker. March 13 marked the beginning of a new and unexpected turn for the performing arts group. That’s when TBT’s staff and dancers were told to begin working from home for the foreseeable future. Logan said her team pivoted quickly to allow instructors to continue providing group lessons to students in the TBT School. Staffers “worked with what equipment they had and Zoomed from home, living rooms, and kitchens,” Logan said. “We did our best to

postponed. While other performing arts groups, like the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, were able to adapt to new safety guidelines in recent months by spacing musicians apart or using transparent shielding, ballet remains inextricably linked with proximity, she said. “For our artform specifically, we are not able to social distance chairs as an orchestra can,” she said. “The nature of our art is to cross spaces, touch each other, and breathe on one another.” Still, as other art forms have, ballet is adapting and moving forward. TBT has two premieres scheduled for February at Bass Performance Hall. Both works make use of smaller groups of dancers that can

MacGyver our way through that time.” The pandemic created additional costs at a time when ticket sales became an impossibility. Fort Worthians showed generosity during those early months by donating tickets instead of asking for refunds, Logan said. The TBT Relief Fund was created to prevent layoffs and to allow artistic staff to continue training and preparing from home. On June 22, TBT resumed in-person summer programming with smaller admission numbers and under strict safety protocols that were developed by working with medical professionals at UNT Health Science Center and Dance/ USA, the national service organization for professional dance. Most of the 40 attendees were teenagers, Logan said. This past August, TBT’s professional dancers were brought back for rehearsals. Dancers were placed in 10-by-10-foot partitioned spaces while instructors led the lessons remotely. Temperature checks and COVID-19 self-screening forms were also used to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. Stevenson said the remote lessons posed several challenges. “I like to work with a certain amount of humor in the studio,” he said. “There is [typically] a lot of fun

going on. That camaraderie, it could be laughter or people asking questions. In the class, you can go up to someone and say, ‘Look at your foot.’ With Zoom, you just have a screen with a load of people on it. Dancers don’t have the personal attention they normally would. It’d be like going to church, and you are the only person in there.” The dancers, he said, are the ones who really struggle from the isolation.

Company dancer Carolyn Judson has faced the challenge of remaining in top form while largely training at home. “As dancers, it’s part of the job description to have self-motivation,” she said. “This is taking it to new limits. You lose so much by not being physically next to people. It’s a challenge, not just for dance but for mental health. We don’t have that physical contact.” It’s the small things that Judson

realized she missed most. “You do your tendus and suffer alone in silence without that person next to you making that face and saying, ‘Uh, quite a day today?’ ” she said. “There’s something nice about the camaraderie. With Zoom, you can’t talk all at once. That must be difficult for the teacher. You can’t hear the feedback. Ben has been choreographing from behind a screen. I can’t imagine how difficult that is, thinking, ‘I hope she’s getting it.’ My favorite part about dancing is dancing with other people — sharing in that experience. We haven’t gotten to do that since March.” Stevenson said his dancers have done a commendable job, given the circumstances. Beyond Solo Premieres, the remote learning environment has led to a surprising number of new opportunities. “It is amazing how everyone has knuckled down and worked with this virus,” he said. He gave the example of a Zoom-led masterclass featuring Marianela Núñez, principal dancer with The Royal Ballet, and another master teacher who taught a recent TBT masterclass from Buenos Aires. “That shows how technology has

changed” how we can reach artists from around the world, Stevenson said. Judson said that some of TBT’s classes, which are available to the general public, were taught by professional dancers who normally would not have been available due to the long hours they typically put in during studio rehearsals. “The kids have enjoyed that face-to-face time with a professional dancer,” Logan added. “There have been challenges with teaching virtually, but it has also offered these different opportunities. It’s a different way to reach students.”

The Nutcracker at Bass Performance Hall will inevitably lead to a precipitous drop in much-needed earned income that can be made up only through private donations, Logan said. TBT will focus on digital programming for the early part of 2021. Plans are in the works to perform three works, including two world premieres, when public safety concerns allow for in-person concerts. Those currently postponed concerts will each feature Serenade (a Balanchine classic set to Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for String), Star Crossed (a pas de deux of the famous lovers Romeo and Juliet), and a world premiere by TBT associate artistic director Tim O’Keefe. “Our goal is to not make too many decisions early on so we can pivot if needed,” Logan said, referring to the upcoming spring season. “Ben will have some live premieres. It won’t be a ballet of 42 dancers at once.” Judson said the TBT dancers have learned to be creative in an environment that no one saw coming. “I don’t think any dancers were like, ‘Ah, right. I was waiting for this — only being able to dance outside on the grass,’ ” she said with a laugh. Learning to film and edit solo

dances is just one example of new skills TBT’s professional dancers now have, she said. “All of the editing, I don’t think anyone thought they’d do that,” she said. “That’s something we can use to reach someone who wouldn’t normally come to our live shows.” The online programming and world premieres are a part of TBT’s continuing work to grow the visibility of the venerable organization, Stevenson said. Over the course of the group Zoom meeting, the dancers and directors voiced a common goal. Texas Ballet Theater, the largest and most prominent ballet company in the region, has reached the highest levels of artistry under the guidance of Stevenson and TBT’s artistic staff. The leaders of the nearly 60-year-old performing arts organization appeared focused on finding new and innovative ways to reach ever-larger audiences, whether that be through traditional concerts or online experiences. “The more we are appreciated, the better it is for the dancers and company,” Stevenson said. “I have the most amazing group of dancers. We are lucky to have them in the Metroplex.” l

The challenges brought by COVID-19 have pushed the TBT team to rely on one another like never before, Stevenson said. “Even though we are farther apart [due to remote work], it has drawn us closer together,” he said. “Some amazing things have happened that I found thrilling.” Logan said COVID-19 has forced ballet companies across the country to seek new ways of collaborating to counterbalance strained resources. That spirit of cooperation will shape TBT

productions in the years to come, she said. Fort Worth’s resident ballet company is best known for lavish performances, but lessons taught to children through dance classes are an equally valued part of TBT’s work, Logan said, adding that dancers gain skills and traits that are highly valuable in any workplace. Employers should know the value of hiring a dancer, she said. “Regardless of the career choice, dancers understand focus, dedication, and attention to detail. They pay attention to the energy in a room so they can navigate it. They are extraordinary, talented people.” Dance lessons since the age of 3 and a subsequent career in ballet have taught Judson how to take critiques and directions, Judson said. “Our first job is to listen to what is expected from us,” she said. “That’s valuable outside of the dance world. To hear criticism and not just shut off, that’s something we all learn.” TBT’s annual production of The Nutcracker will soon be offered online. Each ticket can be used by an entire household. The virtual concert features 2012’s production and a brand new Nutty Nutcracker. Donations of ticket sales helped TBT meet its financial obligation last spring. The loss of performances of

Tarrant County’s nonprofits and faithbased groups worked miracles this year. Faced with a devastating pandemic — the likes of which haven’t been seen in more than a century — Tarrant Area Food Bank, SafeHaven, arts groups, and other nonprofits found ways to expand or pivot services to meet unprecedented levels of need in our community. The holidays offer an opportunity to support one or more of these worthy programs.

The arts are a vital part of any society. Fort Worth’s visual and performing arts groups pivoted to providing online educational resources and programs that directly addressed the COVID-19-related problems affecting our community. Amphibian Stage (AmphibianStage. com/donate) found new ways to provide De-Cruit workshops for traumaaffected veterans and civilians. The Near Southside nonprofit also hired unemployed theater artists to make protective gear for seniors and students.

Catholic Charities Fort Worth

For 110 years, Catholic Charities Fort Worth has created paths out of poverty

for deserving men, women, and children. Last year, Catholic Charities lifted more than 200 families from subsistence living to fulfilling jobs that pay living wages. Beyond proving job opportunities, the charity teaches life skills like budgeting and debt-free living. The large nonprofit also provides legal assistance to folks who are eligible to apply for immigration benefits. The number of programs offered by Catholic Charities Fort Worth is too vast to list in our Holiday Issue. To learn more about this group’s charitable work and ways that you can donate, visit CatholicCharitiesFortWorth.org.

Center for Transforming Lives

Center for Transforming Lives works to disrupt cycles of poverty within Tarrant County. Money management, housing, and education programs are just a few of the ways the charity serves our community. CTL’s newest initiative, Transform Tarrant County from Within, provides a roadmap for individuals, community leaders, influencers, and stakeholders to “activate six key elements” that address inequality within Fort Worth’s small business community. Black-owned businesses in Tarrant County earn five times less revenue than white-owned businesses, CTL leaders recently said in a public statement. Addressing poverty is a daunting task, and you can support that effort by donating at Transforminglives. org/donate.

Children’s Charities of Fort Worth

Children’s Charities of Fort Worth supports 14 local charities, primarily through the annual Fort Worth Margarita Ball. Even with the fundraising difficulties posed by the pandemic, Children’s Charities recently took three charities to Target for a $17,000 shopping spree to buy toys, clothes, and other items. Every dollar donated to Children’s Charities goes to groups like Alliance for Children, Child Protective Services of Tarrant County, Ronald McDonald House of Fort Worth, and many more. To learn more about this charity, visit ChildrensCharitiesFW.com.

The Van Cliburn Foundation

The Cliburn is best known for captivating piano competitions. Since March, the charity pivoted to creating new online content for homebound kiddos. Cliburn Kids, hosted by the affable Buddy Bray, is viewable at Cliburn.org or on Instagram @thecliburn. Each video explores musical concepts through visual and auditory examples. More recently, the

CommUnity Frontline

CommUnity Frontline is a brotherhood of men who work to improve the quality of life in Fort Worth’s East Side. Founded by a group of Stop Six natives, the grassroots effort has grown into a network of civic-minded Fort Worthians who support the Eastside community through monthly meetings and by volunteering in “units” that tackle issues like over-policing, education, and health. Nonprofit cofounder Quinton Phillips said CommUnity Frontline volunteers coordinated food pantry efforts and delivered food to elderly Eastside residents early in the pandemic. There’s no shortage of work to be done in the culturally rich and historically underserved neighborhood of Stop Six. To support this nonprofit’s efforts, visit CommUnityFrontline.com/donations.

Creative Industry Relief Fund

Early into the pandemic, local singersongwriter Rachel Gollay started a relief fund for out-of-work and underemployed artists and service workers. That initiative raised $10,000 before being picked up by Hear Fort Worth, Film Fort Worth, and the United Way of Tarrant County and rebranded as the Creative Industry Relief Fund. The fund continues to funnel one-time grants of $300 to Tarrant County musicians, filmmakers, and artists. The return of large live music events is months away at best, so consider giving back to the creatives who put the funk in Funkytown by donating at UnitedWayTarrant.org/ ArtistsReliefFund.

LVTRise

Beginning in March, members of the Westside-based nonprofit LVTRise

worked to avert a hunger crisis. The community around Las Vegas Trail largely subsists on jobs in administration and food services that were hit hard by the recent recession. Throughout the worst of the pandemic, Westside residents watched out for one another and shared what resources they had, said the nonprofit’s director Willie Rankin. Now, he and his team are fundraising for a community center that will serve as a neighborhood hub that offers classes in financial literacy and career development as well as meal assistance and other crucial programs. The communities around Las Vegas Trail are on the rise, thanks to this charity. Learn more at LVTRise.org.

Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County

The COVID-19 outbreak has made once-routine trips to the grocery store a potentially deadly endeavor for elderly folks or anyone with a chronic health condition. Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County provides hot and nutritious meals for homebound people all over Tarrant County. A visit from one of the charity’s staffers or volunteers can also help combat feelings of isolation. One holiday initiative, Silver Santa Giving Tree, allows donors to buy personalized gifts for homebound, elderly, or disabled neighbors in need. The Christmas gifts range from items like furniture and clothing to slippers and televisions. To learn how to donate time or money to this charity, visit MealsonWheels.org.

NAMI of Tarrant County

Millions of Americans experienced heightened anxiety due to COVID-19. For individuals with mental health disorders, those debilitating moments can be a daily fact of life. Turquoise Banks, president of NAMI Tarrant, and her team provided support group conference calls throughout the pandemic while helping locals find medications and access to online mental health treatments. NAMI is a nonprofit, not a government agency, so contributions are needed to keep this important mental health resource afloat. Donations can be made via NAMITarrant.org.

SafeHaven of Tarrant County

As economic stressors go up, so do incidents of domestic violence. Children are rarely spared from the violence and homelessness that accompanies spousal abuse. Standing between fleeing parents and uncertainty is SafeHaven of Tarrant County, a charity that offers a 24/7 hotline of help (1-877-701-7233). Taste Project takes a novel approach to feeding those in need. The charity looks like just another trendy Near Southside restaurant, but the business model works on the idea that customers pay in one of three ways: what they can afford, what they would typically pay, and what they would typically pay plus a little extra. Tested and Rested

Underserved areas of Tarrant County saw a further pullback of public health resources following the outbreak of COVID-19. The loss of free or affordable screenings for HIV, hepatitis, and other sexually transmitted infections left communities potentially blind to deadly outbreaks. To restore critical public health programs to predominantly minority communities, two nonprofits — reproductive justice group Re+Birth Equity Alliance (RebirthEquity.org) and drug overdose prevention nonprofit O.D. Aid (ODAidFW.org) — created Tested and Rested. The program provides affordable STI screenings, directions on what to do in the event of a positive screening test result, blood glucose tests, free condoms, and other essential public health services and items.

The nonprofit, which calls Fort Worth home, was hit hard by the cancellation of concerts that bring in muchneeded earned income. Due to the realities of over-policing and a monetary bail system that criminalizes poverty, hundreds of innocent men and women — facing charges does not equal guilt — languish in our county’s squalid jail simply because they cannot afford bail amounts of as little as $100. No fewer than 11 men and women have died in the Tarrant County Jail this year under the watch of the county’s Sheriff Department. The Tarrant County Community Bail Fund seeks to address those human rights abuses by posting bond for persons of color who have small or relatively small bail amounts keeping them from enjoying life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Visit ActionNetwork.org/groups/united-fortworth for information on how you can give a Tarrant County resident the gift of freedom (and the chance to meaningfully defend themselves in court) this holiday.

The realities of America’s wealth gap and the severity of the 2020 recession mean that Tarrant Area Food Bank (TAFB) continues to work overtime to ensure that local families do not go hungry. Julie Butner, Tarrant Area Food Bank CEO, told us this past April that the spike in food pantry lines may take up to two years to fully subside. Like other nonprofit directors, she worries that donors will underestimate the long-lasting effects of COVID-19’s economic damage. TAFB receives food donations from grocery distribution centers, but increased staffing needs and purchases of specific food items are paid from TAFB’s budget. To help local families meet that most basic of needs, donate at TAFB.org/donate.

Holiday Games With moviemaking slowing down, gaming has stayed steady, with lots of fresh titles for the season.

C O L E

If one thing has helped save the sanity of many in 2020, it’s video games. As moviegoing screeched to a halt, and various films and TV shows have had their productions slowed or halted by COVID-19, games have gone on strong, thanks to new releases and developers working from home. And that work is noticeable. Early November saw the release of the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft, the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X. Both have relatively similar technical specs, and both are backwards compatible with the vast majority of games from the previous generation. They even cost the same at $500. That is, unless you buy a PS5 without a disc tray, which means you can only buy and download games online. Then it’s $400. So, the choice depends on whether or not you’ve bought most PS4 games physically or digitally. You could also buy the Xbox Series S, a system with lower specs than the Series X but that plays all the same games. Since it’s meant for only 1440 resolution as opposed to 4K and 8K, you’re looking at only $300. If both systems are out of your price range or impossible to find right now, then don’t worry, as neither system is launching with a ton of must-have games. The PS5’s big hitters are Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a semi-expansion on Insomniac’s 2018 game, which is also available on PS4, and Demon’s Souls, a critically acclaimed remake of a 2009 PS3 game. There’s also the family-friendly insect food-themed adventure Bugsnax and Little Big Planet platformer spinoff Sackboy: A Big Adventure, both of which are also on PS4. Xbox, meanwhile, had to postpone the release of Halo Infinite into next year. Essentially, for those awaiting the next Halo or God of War, you’ve got a while before you really need one of the next-gen systems. However, it was announced before the launch of the Series X that Microsoft had purchased developer Bethesda, likely meaning that all future Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Doom games will be Xbox console exclusives. Alongside that is the Xbox’s Games Pass, which lets players pay $15 a month and have unlimited access to stream hundreds of games. That puts quite a lot of weight in Microsoft’s corner. There are also plenty of third-party titles coming to both generations of Playstation and Xbox. Long-running series are seeing new releases, from Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, their newest first-person shooter which has met with decent

The season is loaded with cool new games.

ratings, to Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the latest Viking-themed entry in their historical/stealthaction series, released to very good reviews. There are also new IPs to keep things fresh, including Ubisoft’s Greek mythology-themed adventure Immortals: Fenyx Rising, which is coming to every major current system, including Switch, Stadia, and PC, on Thursday. Not to be outdone, Nintendo has Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, a prequel to the acclaimed Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which features single- and two-player co-op in massive battles with hundreds of enemies. And PC gamers get bragging rights with the newest World of Warcraft expansion, Shadowlands, while RPG players have Balder’s Gate III from Larian Studios, which came out in early access in October for PC and Stadia. Perhaps the most hotly anticipated game for the holidays, though, is the oft-delayed Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red’s long-awaited follow-up to The Witcher III based on the Cyberpunk role playing game. Featuring sci-fi first-person action and RPG gameplay, it finally sees release on December 10 for PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Series X and Series S, PC, and Stadia. This would also be a great time to get the games your family and friends missed earlier in the year. Now that Switches are relatively more available, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is still a solid purchase, with content still being added to it, like the upcoming Toy

Day event. Or if you want to go old-school, grab Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which collects the classics Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy and is available only until March. Not to be outdone, the PS4 had a great year for exclusives, with Final Fantasy 7 Remake, The Last of Us 2, and Ghost of Tsushima, while the Xbox had … a lot of games, like Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs: Legion, iD Software’s Doom Eternal, and Sega’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which are all also available on PS4. (That Bethesda purchase could not have come soon enough for Microsoft.) Then there’s the usual barrage of indie games worth playing, from the beautifully animated Spiritfarer by Thunder Lotus Games to Satisfactory’s 3D open-world factory builder by Coffee Stain Studios and the final episode of Cardboard Computer’s Kentucky Route Zero, as well as upcoming crime management sim Empire of Sin by Romero Games. And while it came out in 2018, we’d be remiss not to mention InnerSloth’s Among Us, the game that exploded this year on streaming and mixed The Thing’s paranoia with backstabbing your friends and family in easy-to-grasp gameplay. Long story short, a number of stellar titles, combined with the release of the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft, have helped make 2020 a great year for gaming, which is about the only thing it’s been a great year for. l

Interlochen Christmas Lights

7-11pm daily December 18 thru December 25 For more than 40 years, the Arlington neighborhood of Interlochen Estates (LakeInterlochenTX.com/Map) has drawn thousands of visitors to see its annual Christmas light route. In previous years, along with cruising the streets in cars, visitors were encouraged to walk the neighborhood on foot. For the 2020 event, please stay in your vehicle. The two-mile route of holiday-themed yard décor and lights installed by 200 or so homeowners will be ready for the public on Fri, Dec 18. Your presence is welcome thru Christmas Day.

In Christian circles, Christmastime is when the birth of the savior Jesus Christ is commemorated. As the story goes, all the country folk of pre-Israel Judea were traveling to the big city to be counted for the census. A very pregnant Mary — Jesus’ mother to be — needed to rest, but there was no room in “the” inn or any inn for that matter. Luckily, a pre-Airbnb barn situation was arranged for the travelers (3 stars, would stay again). Called the Nativity, modern churches reenact this scenario seasonally. From 6-8pm Dec 12-13, you can see this Christmas story come to life with actors and live animals at St. John’s Lutheran Church (1218 E Debbie Ln, Mansfield, 817-473-4889). St. John’s Drive-Thru Nativity features nine scenes and is free to the public.

For those of us in the real world, the holidays mean joining — or avoiding — traditions passed down from our families, including cultural and religious celebrations. Below are a few happenings from now thru Jan 2021 to check out.

Even the Nativity is drive-thru this year.

These kids would love the giant menorah in Frisco.

If you are of the Jewish faith and looking for a little road trip, head to the Simpson Plaza right outside Frisco City Hall (6101 Frisco Square Blvd, 972-292-8000) at 4pm on Dec 13 for the 7th annual community Chabad of Frisco Chanukah Celebration. Along with the giant menorah lighting, there will be treats, dreidels, a balloon artist, and crafts for the kids. Distribution of the goodies will be contactless, social distancing is a must, and families will be seated in family pods, so this is a COVID-safe event. Jewish musician Yoel Sharabi will be performing classic and modern Israeli songs. This event is free to attend, but donations are welcome at ChabadFrisco.org. Virtual runs have become all the rage, with many being fundraising efforts not unlike real 5K runs. In a world that is smaller than ever, this means you can support communities and benefit efforts around the world — not just locally — through a variety of online events. For example, Fit Black & Educated — a nonprofit group empowering African Americans in San Diego — is hosting Kwanzaa Virtual 5K from Dec 26 to Jan 1. The race theme is umoja (unity), which is the first principle of the Kwanzaa holiday created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga after the Watts riots in Los Angles to bring the community together. Participants receive a finisher’s medal and a digital finisher’s certificate and race bib, plus sunglasses for the first 150 people. Registration is $30 at Kwanzaa5K.com.

This couple is on Day 4 of Kwanzaa.

The yin to the European Santa-like person Saint Nicholas is Krampus, a half-goat, half-demon entity who punishes misbehaving children during Yule (a.k.a. Christmas). On Sat from noon to 5pm, join the folks at Fort Witch (1424 Brown Tr, Ste E, Bedford) as they celebrate with a Krampus Day Yule Mini Pop-Up. Fort Witch — the “little witch shop around the corner” that is “a place, a community, a coven” — is a retail shop with candles, gift items, herbs, stationery, stickers, and more. For Krampus Day, there will be additional vendors on-site, plus there may (or may not) be opportunities to take photos with Krampus. Attend and see.

Festivus is real? I was today years old when I found out. Originally created by author Daniel O’Keefe as a secular alternative holiday focused on resisting commercialism, Festivus rose to meteoric fame when featured in an episode of Seinfeld in 1997. For those interested in feats of strength, the airing of grievances, and dinner by the Festivus pole, the Seinfeldsanctioned official celebration date is Dec 23.

Celebrate Krampus Day at Fort Witch.

Now is the time for Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year in the Northern hemisphere, marking the symbolic death and rebirth of the sun. With the global pandemic still a concern, even the ancients have gone virtual. On Mon, Dec 21, from sunset at 16:01 GMT on Sun, Dec 20, thru sunrise at 8:09 GMT (and for 45 minutes before and after), join a livestream at Stonehenge hosted by English Heritage — a British nonprofit group that maintains more than 400 historic buildings and monuments in England. The event is free at Facebook. com/EnglishHeritage.

Friday, December 18 For the first time in its history, TransSiberian Orchestra — a rock ’n’ roll holiday tradition for more than 20 years — is not on tour this winter due to the pandemic. Instead, TSO is hosting a 90-minute livestream performance of Christmas Eve and Other Stories on Fri, Dec 18, at 7pm. Tickets are $30 at TSOLivestream.com.

STAGE Holiday

Fort Worth’s performing arts groups have a mix of virtual and in-person concerts to liven your spirits this month. B Y

Ballet Concerto Presents A Holiday Special

Ballet Concerto is presenting a shortened version of A Holiday Special (typically performed at Will Rogers Memorial Auditorium) at Arts Fifth Avenue on the Near Southside. This year’s special includes a variety of singers and dancers who will perform holiday favorites while socially distancing. Flamenco dancer Margarita Bruce will reenact scenes from the ancient story of Hanukkah through dance, and a small cast of ballet dancers (choreographed by Margo Dean) will bring the Nativity and other popular Christmas scenes to life.

Local performing arts organizations are taking special safety precautions when offering live music and theatrical performances this month. Many holiday concerts, like Texas Ballet Theater’s Nutcracker, will be offered online only. While not a comprehensive listing, these upcoming performances are a great place to start your holiday entertainment journey.

Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Performs Sounds of the Season

Stage West Theatre Presents The Naughty List

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is one of the few professional orchestras performing in-person concerts this year. Several concerts this fall were held at Will Rogers Memorial Auditorium and featured a smaller, socially distanced ensemble. There are two dates this month to catch the FWSO’s brass and percussion section as they perform Sounds of the Season, a live concert of popular Christmas and holiday tunes. The FWSO’s brass section, led by Nikolette LaBonte (french horn), Kyle Sherman (trumpet), and Joseph Dubas (trombone), are in top form and ready to lead your family through a pitch-perfect holiday journey.

Holiday in the Garden

Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT), Fort Worth Opera, and the Fort Worth Botanic Garden present Holiday in the Garden (FWBG.org/events/ holiday) later this month. The daylong event includes a Holiday Sip and Shop (food trucks, live music, artisan market), Santa in the Garden (socially distanced

Performed outdoors on the beautiful and expansive Texas Wesleyan University mall, The Naughty List is a comingof-age story told through holiday icons (frosty Jack, Krampus, and Kris Kringle, among others). The Stage West production follows the story of a young Santa Claus who is working with a friend to put the finishing touches on the Naughty and Nice lists when a mysterious name unexpectedly shows up on one of the lists and launches an effort to save Christmas. The Naughty List is offered in person and online.

Texas Ballet Theater Presents The Nutcracker and The Nutty Nutcracker

Texas Ballet Theater’s uber-popular Nutcracker performances are bowing out for a year for public safety reasons, but the resident ballet company of both Fort Worth and Dallas is selling tickets for a virtual performance of the beloved Tchaikovsky ballet. The online concert features a video of TBT’s 2012 Nutcracker concert — choreographed by TBT artistic director Ben Stevenson

— and the release of a new, shortened Nutty Nutcracker that parodies the events of this past year. Teachers can contact TBT (community@texasballet.org) for information about classroom streaming options. l

As Christmas lights shine bright and the holidays hit full stride, we discover ourselves caught in the struggle of a busy life. Bogged down with the awkwardness of gift exchanges, holiday office jubilee, or tipsily texting Tinder strangers, a pandemic put a halt on all that cheerful glee. If 2020 were a present from Satan (no, that is not misspelled),

it would be a lump of coal in a well-worn stocking that reeks of soured milk and charred bacon. We don’t have to allow this lump-ofcoal year to alter our holiday festivities. While most local bars have reopened, we safely encourage your visiting, although three local bars have generously shared holiday cocktail recipes out of gentle care — if only to prevent your innerScrooge from being rattled by ghosts. Or relatives. Whichever you fear the most. Opening a year ago at the Jennings and Pennsylvania intersection on the Near Southside, Low Key Tavern is proprietor Chas Taiple’s latest concoction in addition to the West 7th speakeasy Bodega. With High Top pub coming soon to the former Pizza Bar None space next door, Taiple took a breather to let us in on a drink that’s perfect for this time of year. “Aromatic smells we are all familiar with for the holidays,” said Taiple when running down the list of ingredients of Griswold’s Old Fashioned. “Cinnamon, baking spice, oranges. And the double oak by Woodford Reserve is a solid whisky choice. It’s a reminder of the log fire burning in the fireplace.” continued on page 36

Griswold’s Old Fashioned ½ oz cinnamon tea syrup 2 oz Woodford Reserve Double Oak Dash Peychaud’s bitters Dash orange bitters Rosemary sprig for garnish Low Key Tavern’s second annual coat drive will be held on Sat, Dec 19. Get your whistle wet while providing warmth for someone else. Up the street and around the block is where Fort Worthians transform into Hawaiians to unleash their inner Don Ho. Tarantula Tiki Lounge is the brainchild of co-owners Autumn Brackeen and Jason Alford, who also keep West Magnolia Avenue stalwart Boiled Owl hooting. Providing a brief background, Brackeen dives into what she calls their signature swill, the Black Spider Grog. “We started crafting the menu almost three years ago, and this gem was the very first creation,” she said. “I knew I wanted to do a play on the classic navy grog but wanted to put a Tarantula signature on it. After experimenting with

housemade blackberry syrup, we landed on this strong, fruity, perfectly balanced cocktail that is sure you leave you happily buzzing. The rich combination of three distinct rums and allspice dram give the Black Spider Grog a flavor that can be enjoyed year-round, but it also tastes perfectly festive for the holiday season.”

Black Spider Grog 1 oz Diplomatico Reserva rum 1 oz Lemon Hart Blackpool spiced rum 1 oz Plantation 3 Stars rum ¾ oz fresh lime juice ¾ oz housemade blackberry syrup ½ oz St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram ½ oz grapefruit juice Combine in a shaker with cubed ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a grog mug filled with nugget ice. Garnish with fresh blackberries, an orchid, and your favorite swizzle. Aloha to that! The final two recipes are a boozy doozy. Owner Lisa Little-Adams of Proper on Magnolia has again turned this quaint neighborhood go-to into the North Pole for their Christmas pop-up happening now. The Papa Elf beverage joins forces

with local liquor maker Blackland Distillery. “We’ve been trying to support owner Markus Kypreos and general manager Megan McClinton from Blackland as much as possible during COVID,” Little-Adams said, “and when Megan brought us this new product, we jumped on it. It fits perfectly with our Christmas menu and is such a good product.”

The Papa Elf 1¼ oz Blackland Texas Pecan Brown Sugar Bourbon 1¼ oz rye whiskey 1 dropper of cardamom bitters (2-3 dashes) Add all ingredients to a tumbler, stir with a big cube of ice or a snowball. (Make sure it’s not yellow snow.) Garnish with brown butter tincture or lemon peel spritzed and cinnamon stick. “His Heart Grew 333 Times that Day is our next recipe,” Little-Adams said. “This is essentially a variation of a Grasshopper but with a little chile kick and not too much mint. I’m not a cream drink person, but this is just delicious. It’s hard to not drink more than one. I also wanted a green drink to tie in with

the name. It’s referring to a line in The Grinch but with a secret message to my children.”

His Heart Grew 333 Times that Day 6-10 mint leaves (depending on size) ½ oz Hendrix Gin 1 oz Crème de Cacao ¼ oz Ancho Reyes Verde Chile Liqueur ¼ oz pandan 1 oz heavy cream Lightly muddle mint with gin before adding other ingredients, then shake and strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with one mint leaf. Here’s your chance to avoid a nightmare before Christmas and turn your holidays into holidaze. Drink up, Grinches! l

As of this writing, there is one major Hollywood blockbuster scheduled to come out in theaters before the end of the year. It is Wonder Woman 1984, which is also out on HBO Max on Christmas, the same day it will be in theaters. That sequel, which features Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal in villainous roles, may be the only bigticket item, but as we’ll observe, there’s plenty else worth seeing before the year is out. This time of year is traditionally known as “awards season” in the trade, when studios put out Oscar contenders. The coronavirus pandemic has pushed many of those films into 2021, but not all of them. Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy has earned poisonous reviews with its Hollywoodized depiction of rural poverty, but Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland offers a much less sentimental and more earthbound depiction of life on that economic edge, with Frances McDormand blending into a cast of mostly nonprofessional actors in this story set among the itinerants who travel the West and Midwest in RVs working odd jobs. Tom Hanks stars in News of the World, a drama set during the Civil War which is directed by Paul Greengrass, taking a break from his previous films that recreated recent historical events. Fresh from her Oscar win for acting, Regina King makes her directing debut with One Night in Miami, dramatizing a real-life 1964

meeting between Malcolm X, Cassius Clay, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke. The film lit up the virtual Toronto Film Festival this past September. On a less exalted but no less entertaining plain (we hope), Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman is a delectable slice of evil with Carey Mulligan taking revenge on the parties responsible for the unpunished rape that forced her to drop out of medical school. Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari stars Steven Yeun as a Korean man who moves to Arkansas in the 1980s to start a family farm. Marc Meyers’ All My Life has Jessica Rothe taking on a somewhat more dramatic role than we’re used to seeing her in as a woman who discovers that her fiancé (Harry Shum, Jr.) is gravely ill shortly after becoming engaged to him. Lawrence Michael Levine’s Black Bear features a hellacious dramatic performance by Aubrey Plaza as an actress who unravels mentally on the set of a film or possibly as the filmmaker who conceives that actress as a character in

her own film. There’s also John Patrick Shanley’s Irish romance Wild Mountain Thyme, whose trailer has drawn widespread internet mockery for the bad Irish accents on Emily Blunt and Christopher Walken. On Netflix, David Fincher’s Mank has Gary Oldman playing Herman J. Mankiewicz, the co-writer of the movie classic Citizen Kane. The most enthusiastic reviews have been for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, adapted from August Wilson’s play about a 1920s trumpeter (played by the late Chadwick Boseman in his last role) whose life turns tragic while he’s waiting to record for a legendary blues singer. Beyond that, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey is a musical about a toymaker who has lost his magic which features a highly entertaining turn by KeeganMichael Key as the villain of the piece. Not to be outdone, Hulu has already released Happiest Season as well as the thriller Run, which has drawn raves for paralyzed actress Kiera Allen as Sarah Paulson’s wheelchair-bound

daughter. Amazon is putting out I’m Your Woman in theaters the same day it’s available on Amazon Prime, with Rachel Brosnahan as a 1970s mother who goes on the lam when a crime deal goes bad. The Irish movie Wolfwalkers is currently playing in Dallas, and, while it’s a bit over-elaborate in story terms, it’s certainly something to look at on a big screen. If you’re in a more documentary mood this season, Dear Santa tracks the U.S. Post Office’s handling of letters to Santa Claus, Billie examines the legacy of jazz legend Billie Holiday, and Collective follows a group of Romanian journalists whose investigation of a nightclub fire wound up forcing resignations at their government’s highest levels. With theater audiences so sparse right now that movie theaters may need a federal bailout to survive, there’s a decent selection of fare even in these straitened times to get you out to the cineplex. Just stay safe when you do. For more, visit FWWeekly.com.
