2 FORT WORTH WEEKLY MUSIC AWARDS feStIvAl 2018

Welcome to the 2018 Fort Worth Weekly Music Awards Festival (#MAF18). This is the 17th iteration of our celebration, and this year we’ve gone back to our roots: one day, one neighborhood, eight venues, 40 bands, no cover. All of the action will take place in the Near Southside, and there will be complimentary shuttles from Texas Silver Star Whiskey zooming around the area to ferry you from club to club. Since you’re not paying anything to see the bands and being chauffeured around for free, we would appreciate it if you’d drop $5 to purchase a digital download of our annual compilation album, Frequencies, Vol. 9, featuring some of the best up-and-coming bands that the 817 has to offer. Sales from the album will benefit the United Way of Tarrant County. Thanks to everyone who supports local music now and all year round. –– Eric Griffey Jarvis St

The

performers Do yourself a favor: Don’t miss a chance to see Abraham Alexander, as his breakout into the big time is not a question of if, only when. The gospel-influenced R&B soulman’s golden voice is the main attraction, but it’s the impassioned poetry in his lyrics that makes this man a cut above the rest.

The solo project of Zach Edwards (Son of Stan, Oil Boom, Ice Eater) All Clean is an anxiety meltdown in band form, welding angular guitar leads, throbbing bass, and banging drums to computerized loops and samples, unleashed in waves of industrial postpunk.

Brutally honest and self-effacing yet veined with a cynical sense of humor, Kevin Aldridge & The Appraisers draw on the sonic tropes and signature moves of classic rock. That doesn’t mean it sounds like a rehash –– while the chords kerrang and the leads and melodies make your hair stand on end, Aldridge’s thoughtful lyrics hit you right in the heart.

Convoy & The Cattlemen amp up honkytonk and rockabilly traditions with punk rock velocity and the musical precision of a metal band, packing bars with people stoked to knock back beers and hop on Convoy’s breakneck ride.

8 FORT WORTH WEEKLY MUSIC AWARDS festival 2015

If there’s one band in town that just gets it right, it’s probably The Cush. They write great songs, they tour frequently both in the United States and across the pond, and they put on a thrilling live show. Maybe it’s because the husband-and-wife team of Burette and Gabby Douglas have been in the game since the ’90s, but, more likely, The Cush are awesome because their take on swirling psychedelia and driving Brit rock-colored power pop never sounds tired or contrived. Cut Throat Finches are rooted in Americana and gospel, but they know how to turn the amps up to 11 and dig into some clanging guitar rock. On their new album, Polite Conversation, there’s even a bit of punk-rock grit, both in the guitar tones and frontman Sean Russell’s lyrical bite. And even when he’s in political-leaning call-out mode, Russell’s delivery and ear for melody pack his songs with singalong pop hooks. After meeting on social media, Danni & Kris collaborated on an EP and eventually recorded their first album, Mountain Sounds, in beautifully intimate Northern California settings –– first, in a house on a vineyard and then at a cabin in the Sequoia Forest. The women’s picturesque surroundings for their recording fit their pristine, dream-like vocal harmonydriven balladry. Danni & Kris posses that rare combination of radio-ready star power and songwriting street cred.

Veteran scenester Ryan Higgs’ long-gestating The Daybreak Hits channel the feel-good guitar rock of the ’90s and pair anthemic choruses with punchy rock ’n’ roll. His backing band reads like a Fort Worth music all-star lineup.

Influenced by the greatest gods of the classic rock pantheon, Dead Vinyl decided they weren’t messing around anymore and in the fall put out Gold Mine, an album that turned their Led Zeppelin worship into manifested greatness. And like their legendary heroes, Dead Vinyl’s blues-based hard-rock riffage leaves plenty of room for improv –– whether they’re on a big stage or in the corner of a crowded dive, the band takes the energy of a room and spins it into sonic gold. FORT WORTH WEEKLY MUSIC AWARDS festival 2018 9

This country singer-songwriter may pay her respects and follow in the footsteps (or bootsteps) of greats like Tammy, Loretta, Dolly, and Reba, but she’s no mere retread cashing in on a look and an accent. Summer Dean’s songs own her own angst, heartbreak, and failings, bearing the weight of her thoughts on the strength of her gorgeous voice. Her stage presence is friendly and fun, even when her tunes become introspective and sardonic. Earthchild Imperius was born when members of Igneous Grimm and the now-defunct Secret Ghost Champion started kicking around some heady sci-fi ideas about the clash between a ruinous, sentient world-ship and the spacefaring descendants of humans who stand against them. Musically, their cosmic tale is told through proggy psychedelia hued in Beatles-esque harmonies. It’s as gorgeous-sounding as it is stoneriffic.

Though the members of FOGG are still pretty young, it seems their debut as a Sabbath-worshipping power trio-turned-sextet transpired around the time the earth cooled. But in the passage of time, their mastery of the riff has led them to find the heavy in other inspirations. In their current incarnation, they make dark-shaded psychedelic rock built on complex arrangements played with telepathic musicianship.

One listen to Heater will make you check the date just to be sure you’re not listening to a Dischord band from the late ’80s –– the punk quartet’s guitar freakouts lay old-school emo and American post-punk on top of a hardcore frame, and their live show is commensurately intense. You could wear earplugs to see them, but you’ll be missing out on the full effect of this glorious noise.

Huffer turns beer-powered garage rock into a bonfire of shoegaze guitar and massive riffage. Though their vibe is decidedly party-forward, their sound belies some really excellent musicianship and songwriting chops

Henry the Archer is tough to pigeonhole. You can file them under “indie rock,” but the combination of their musical alacrity and willingness to reference other genres –– sometimes in the middle of a song –– makes for a mercurial, exciting listening experience, especially given the impassioned melodicism of frontman Richard Hennessey. Better still, the trio’s impeccably captured recordings perfectly translate well in a live setting. Claire Hinkle’s debut album, Let It Be, sounds like it came from a songwriter who’s been at it for years, which is notable given that she’s still in high school. Steeped in the blues and delivered in a world-weary voice that belies her age, Hinkle’s songs aim for that smoky spot in everyone’s hearts. Though her last name suggests serious music lineage, Hinkle’s work stands on its own.

Longtime cowpunk misfits Holy Moly have made their mark for more than a decade with beer-chugging balladry about drugs and mustaches, countrified versions of Primus songs, and hard-swingin,’ heavy-drinkin’ good times.

After three years of woodshedding, the guys and gal in Mañana Cowboy recently released their debut. The nine-song album Día Tree tells a story of a man’s descent into his subconscious world over the cymbal splash and guitar jangle of lo-fi indie pop. The quartet has a sunny, psychedelic side that is tastefully subtle, yet they aren’t afraid to rock out when the moment calls for it.

Matthew Broyles is many things –– author, radio show personality, podcaster –– but music seems to be his chief creative outlet. His resumé includes production and guitar with a variety of artists, from local world-folk artist Daniel Katsuk to the Dandy Warhols’ Zia McCabe. As The Matthew Show, he writes eclectic pop songs speckled with wry humor. FORT WORTH WEEKLY MUSIC AWARDS festival 2018 15

Even though the dudes in Meach Pango don’t take themselves too seriously, they’re serious about showing a crowd a good time. Tight as hell and pumped up to play, the musicians hit their audiences with sticky pop hooks, anthemic rock choruses, and a party-friendly vibe –– what they like to think of as “getting Meached.”

This band only gets better with time. Now with a keyboard player, Mean Motor Scooter’s garage rock has only gotten more interesting and dynamic while retaining the overdriven bass and guitar crunch that’s made them a favorite here and, now apparently, out of town.

Blasting fuzz-heavy rock ’n’ roll from a towering mountain range of high-gain amplifiers and shrouded in a weed-scented fog-machine haze, The Me-Thinks have reigned as Haltom City’s lords of guitar power for the better part of two decades. As their capes billow behind them, their legend grows.

Peter More has called several places home, but his connection to Fort Worth never wavers. Nor, it seems, does his connection with Steely Dan mastermind Donald Fagen, whom More met years ago in Mexico. Their chance acquaintance has led Fagen to produce More’s music, most recently on an upcoming album showcasing More’s talent for writing hook-laden indie pop punctuated by fluid guitar work and intelligent, relatable vocals.

Clint Niosi always seems to be working on one project or another. Whether it’s an indie film score, acting as producer for other bands, or one of his solo albums, Niosi’s musical vision bears a cinematic atmosphere that’s shaded and textured in moody emotion that gives way to tense, cathartic moments. His most recent album, the jazz-inflected, reverb-colored Daedelum, is like a modern film noir. 16 FORT WORTH WEEKLY MUSIC AWARDS festival 2018

Composed of talent from Denton, Fort Worth, and Arlington and named for a weird species of squid, O. Deletron began as instrumental soundtracks to videos that guitarist Jason Flynn had made from Super 8 and VHS cameras as a teenager and young adult. Singer Aaron Bartz imagined narratives around the footage, and he wrote lyrics for Flynn’s low-key, mid-tempo slacker jams, creating a sound that is autumnal and nostalgic. Panic Volcanic turn three basic elements –– drums, bass, and vocals –– into heavy- hitting hard rock that’s greater than what that minimalist arrangement suggests. On their long-awaited second album, they’ve made that less-is-more ethos into an even bigger sound, built on fuzzed-out low-end runs and powerful vocals.

Sailing toward success on the strength of his self-titled second album, Fairmount-area piano man Andy Pickett is finally getting his due –– and the crowds to match. Backing him is a six-piece that fully realizes his vision of wryly worded, sumptuously produced ’70s AM radio gold.

Atmospheric and intelligent yet bracing and gritty, Picnic Lightning’s music blends punkrock distortion with moody desert vibes –– like the soundtrack to downing a bottle of whiskey on a moonlit night while talking to a rattlesnake.

Pinkish Black’s goth-leaning horror movie soundtrack-inspired experimentalism makes for some truly dark, foreboding, and heavy music. But the synth-and-drum duo’s sound is also rooted in a pop sensibility. The two continue to produce songs that are both spooky and catchy, overwhelming audiences like an ancient malfunctioning robot from beyond. 18 FORT WORTH WEEKLY MUSIC AWARDS festival 2018

Featuring Fort Worth hip-hop scene veteran Big Cliff Watkins, Remember the Name hits the stage with total ferocity, punching their audiences with high-volume guitar attacks and Cliff’s freestyle mastery. The quartet pulls the rap-rock genre back from its Limp into the grave and restores it with Rage-era vitality.

After what seemed like forever, Royal Sons emerged from the ashes of the Hanna Barbarians and In Memory of Man this past year to burn down local stages like a phoenix hellbent on reminding the world what guitar rock can do for your soul. Furious and loud, the band captivates audiences with electrifying riffage and frontman Blake Parish’s animal howl.

Passionate about his art and a poet at his core, Joe Savage is a well-traveled singer-songwriter with a voice like Merle Haggard and a soul like a character out of Steinbeck or Kerouac. His tunes are fiery and honest, rooted in C&W traditions but never bound by them.

Between his aspirations for international business and his time spent chopping beats for other artists, Juma Spears is a busy dude. That doesn’t mean his rap game gets short shrift. The 24-year-old performer earned a slot at two local festivals this year, Fortress Fest and Summerthon (opening for legend Bun B), and he continues to hone his skills and collaborate with artists both within Fort Worth and without.

War Party’s Cameron Smith started playing under his Sur Duda alter-ego to give life to the songs that didn’t fit with his main band’s sound. In November, he debuted Paper Knife, a full-length of punk-rock poetry influenced equally by Bob Dylan and Lou Reed.

Yes, Matt Tedder was a contestant on The Voice. And, yes, he made it onto the TV talent show because he is indeed a blues guitar prodigy with a soulful set of pipes. But that was a long time ago, and he’s forged ahead with his career in the meantime, wowing crowds with his effortless shredding and knack for crafting truly great songs. Whether he’s on his own, with his band, or sitting in on a jam, Tedder leaves an indelible sonic mark every time he picks up his guitar.

Tame … Tame and Quiet’s temperamental post-punk punctuates chiming atmospherics with a cerebral, angular guitar attack. Their sound is like a calculus textbook rewritten as a magical reality novel, brainy and colorful all at once.

Vandoliers frontman Josh Fleming has always gone for the hookiest route to his audience’s hearts. His rowdy cowpunks hit their paces with roots rockin’ aplomb, spilling heartfelt tales and honkytonk stompers across the stage like cans of Lone Star kicked over just for the hell of it. Every show is a party that you don’t want to miss.

Pumping out melodic dance-pop with a heavy dose of electro-flavored synth-rock, Vodeo’s music is as perfect for late-night solitary drives as it is for crowded parties. Disco might have died a long time ago, but when these boys turn it up, their bass-heavy pulse and spacey funk make for inescapable grooves that are as precise as a Swiss-made watch.

Formed in a sweltering attic by two longtime friends reconnecting over their love of loud guitars and tribal drums, Washed Up Rookie lays down slabs of fuzzed-out swamp-water blues-rock that’s raw, sultry, and infectious.
