Winner The Carpet Care People Frequently Asked Questions Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Upholstery we specialise in cleaning and refreshing 3 piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle, and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you’ll see! Alresford Police

I hope everyone has been staying safe. I would like to start by asking people to report crimes to us via 101. We have had crimes, which are not being reported or are being posted in Facebooks groups and not the police. Whilst it is a good idea to let people in the area know what is going on via Facebook crimes should be reported to the police first. If incidents are not being reported to us then we will not know what incidents are taking place. In addition, please report things that may seem suspicious as it could help develop a bigger picture. I will be holding another beat surgery that will be taking place on the 16th of June. The beat surgery will take place at the Alresford community centre between 11:00-13:00 and I will be covering safe at home so please feel free to pass by. I will also be more than happy to chat about any other issues or enquiry’s you may have. Victor Mills - P.C.S.O.

Are you eating enough?

Many people are trying to cut back on calories, but did you know it is estimated that around one in ten people over the age of 65 are malnourished or are at risk of malnutrition. The reasons for this can be varied. Mobility issues may affect the ability to shop and cook, dentures fitting incorrectly may make eating uncomfortable and poor health or low mood may affect a person’s appetite. What is good nutrition? Good nutrition is getting the balance of food types right, thinking about portion size and the frequency of meals. Find a balance across the day by eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables, 3-4 portions of starchy carbohydrates, 2-3 portions of proteins like fish, eggs, beans and meat and 2-3 portions of dairy or alternatives. What are the warning signs of nutrition issues? • Unplanned weight loss which will show in loose clothing or rings • Frequent or prolonged illness due to a reduction in the body’s natural defences • Loss of interest in activities and withdrawal from social events • Finding it hard to keep warm and to concentrate • Feeling weak and tired • A lack of equipment, beverages and food supplies in the home

How can you combat poor nutrition? • Take nourishing drinks and supplements in addition to meals • If appetite is low, eat small amounts but more frequently • Have breakfast to set you up for the day • Seek medical help early to help prevent hospital stays for infections • Ask for nutritional advice from your pharmacist, practice nurse or GP

The Covid year at the Church in the Wood

Restoration and redecoration The outside of the building has been repainted by volunteers, except for the roof. Woodwork has been replaced where necessary. Music At the end of 2019, the harmonium was not always producing the notes and harmonies initiated by its player. There were some blanks and some novel noises. This instrument had been donated by the Salvation Army at the instigation of David Mortock, who was the bandleader who brought a band to accompany Hymns in the Wood, for each year since 2015.The previous harmonium was wrecked by vandals in 19?? . As repair was beyond the financial means of the church; an electric keyboard was bought for a modest amount and played outside Socially Distanced (SD) on 9th August Good news was to come however within a few days when Paul Hellard a self-confessed harmonium addict, got in touch to say he had overhauled the instrument. This he had done brilliantly.

Services The bad news was that sadly David Mortlock died of cancer in April 2020 and Covid caused the cancellation of Hymns in the Wood in May of that year with his son as bandleader. On a brighter note, SD services took place outside accompanied by the rejuvenated harmonium on 23rd August and also 13th 20th 27th September, harvest festival. After this service, our musical mainspring went to spend the winter in Beauworth Church where it was used to accompany two funeral services. Clued up with Pat Sissons on Radio Solent The church was one of the mystery venues on 20th December. Did you hear and manage to make sense of the clues?

Visitors While the work has been going on there has been a stream of visitors taking their Covid exercise on the footpaths that cross Bramdean Common. It has been a pleasure to allow them to have a look inside. as for many the CiW was where they had been christened years ago, but since forgotten. The church is operating again..(sometimes outside). Services will be at 3pm on the second and fourth Sundays of each month until the end of September. All are welcome including dogs, squirrels, birds, horses and wellington boots. Do come if you can - Directions. Park on Bramdean Common at 2.45 and listen for the bell.

Jackie’s County Corner

I’m back and very grateful to all of you who took the time to vote by post or in person at the elections on the 6th May. I was elected to be your County Councillor for the Itchen Valley Division. Although we could not meet you earlier, we were allowed to meet you at your door after the 8th March and I had hundreds of conversations- both happy and sad. I saw a distinct difference in those conversations in comparison to those in previous years. • A greatly increased interest in our green environment • A greater awareness of recycling, and how we can reduce our own Carbon footprint • A far greater number of electric cars plugged into homes • The health and wellbeing of you, and of those around us • And of course- getting out more! Electric cars have burgeoned in the last few years. ‘Range anxiety’ is often less with an electric car when you plug it in at home , rather than find a fuel station. But conscious that this is not possible for residents without off-street parking, WCC has provided fast and rapid charging spots at car parks in Winchester and Alresford, with more planned. HCC is trialling slow charge on-street overnight charging from lamp posts. NewLeaf Alresford is joining a group of sites that are working with WCC and HCC trialling new forms of verge management to increase the number of wildflowers we see on the roadsides. The cost of maintaining a verge in this way is more complicated than it sounds so these trials will be really useful to see the implications. If you fancy trying verge gardening, please contact www. NewLeafAlresforford.org for more details Many of you will have had a tidy out as part of the Covid19 rethink in our lives and want to recycle children’s toys and clothes. Go to www.winchestervineyard. org (see ‘storehouse’ on their menu) to support families with young children- toys, money, they even have an Amazon wishlist! I’m still a Trustee of The Watercress Way. Our progress has been hampered through the last year but we are volunteering from June, with walks, and conservation activities. Go to www.thewatercressway. org.uk for details. Volunteering is an opportunity to make a real difference for others, and taking part is fun particularly if you want to walk and talk and meet others along the way. Proposals for new incinerator sites in Hampshire fill me with horror. If this county is taking recycling seriously, we must do that: recycle what we can and not build more capacity to burn. So, it is disappointing that even though pubs and shops are open again, the recycling centres are still appointment only- and still only for cars. I’ll talk more about recycling in the context of the new Hampshire Minerals and Waste plan in July’s county corner. As you read this, the Hampshire Together consultation on the difficult decision on the new hospital will be underway. Go to www.HampshireTogether.nhs.uk to give your views- and I’d be pleased to hear them too! If you don’t have the internet, please give me a call, so I can talk you through how you can be involved too.
