HART Wildlife Rescue - Medstead
What a busy couple of months it's been
Advertisement
As the leaves have been turning crisp and orange and the nights drawing in, HART has welcomed our 3,300th animal into the hospital this year. 2020 saw a total of 3,233 animals, so the team really have had their work cut out for them. In October alone we rescued 246 animals, including barn owls, swans, a red kite, kestrals, tawny owls, brown longeared bats, badgers, foxes and a staggering 99 hedgehogs.
Exciting news - Our Teemill site is LIVE!
We are enormously excited to announce the launch of our Teemill shop, with a large range of Exclusive branded clothing, bags and art prints designed for Hart by wonderful local artist Mischief King and Hart volunteer, Eliza Whitfield. Every purchase helps us raise crucial funds here at Hart to continue our work rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing wildlife. All our Teemill products are made in a factory powered by renewable energy and garments are made from certified organic cotton and come in plastic-free packaging - perfect for Christmas presents!

Spotlight - Emergency badger rescue in Beech...
In October HART were called out to a site in Beech where some construction work was taking place, after a badger had been spotted down an enormous hole in the earthworks. The team, with care, patience and skill, managed to catch the badger and remove it from the hole. Despite the badger being in his more seasoned years, he thankfully presented no major concerns, suggesting his rescue must have taken place not long after he fell. On release, the badger was quickly off the mark and knew exactly where he was going!
Stories like these are excellent reminders to all of us undertaking any sort of construction work (even small-scale work in the garden), that it is important to keep wildlife at the forefront of our minds and regularly check for animals, where possible covering any holes that they might fall into when not working on site.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay. Upholstery we specialise in cleaning and refreshing 3 piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle, and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you’ll see!

New Alresford Town Council
Remembrance Day Project
A year ago, we decided to embark on a Remembrance Day project which has reached fruition this week! The good people of Alresford have knitted and crocheted over 4,000 poppies since the beginning of the year and these were displayed at St. John's church, the Memorial Gardens, and other locations in the town.
Huge thanks go to everyone involved including Six West for providing the wool at cost, the Men's Shed for their skill and expertise in constructing the frameworks and R M Trailers for ensuring the displays were firmly anchored down. This has truly been a community effort - well done everyone. Poppies were also attached to lamp posts around the town, which together with all the knitted poppies were a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives in two world wars and more than seventy other conflicts.
Grants At our town council meeting in October, we were delighted to award two grants. Alresford PIGS was awarded £400.00 towards the Christmas tree in Broad Street which they organise each year. A second award of £1000 was given to Citizen’s Advice for their Outreach Service in Alresford. They have provided information around benefits, particularly Universal Credit, employment concerns and queries around health and community care to Alresford residents.
We award grants to local groups and charities serving our community every quarter. If you would like to be considered, please submit your application by Monday 3rd January 2022. Applications will be considered at the next Town Council meeting on 25th January 2022. Please visit our website for more details. We look forward to hearing from you. Winchester Basics Bank The Basics Bank will be open on Wednesday 22nd December and Wednesday 5th January from 10am to midday in the Lower meeting room, Alresford Recreation Centre. They will also be providing an emergency delivery service on 28th December together with providing food to families with children who normally get free school meals, during the holiday period.
If you would like to donate food items in time for Christmas, then they have asked for you to do so by 14th December. There is a donation point at the Co-op in Alresford. For items that they are most in need of, and details of how they can help, then please visit their website www. winchesterbasicsbank.co.uk
Hanging Basket Scheme 2022 By early January, businesses and homeowners in the town centre will receive an order form for the hanging baskets and trough scheme 2022. Please could you email/post your order form together with your payment to our office no later than Friday 28th January 2022. This is to ensure that the nursery has sufficient time to grow your order! Preferred payment method is by BACS adding your surname or company name as your reference, so that we can identify your payment. A copy of the order form will be on our website. Thank you for your continued support. Please contact us if you have any further queries.

TALKS - No Talks in January New Book - “The John Whites of Selborne” by Ronald A Chalmers. This book consists of biographies of three relatives of Gilbert White the naturalist – his father, his brother, and his nephew. All called John, rather confusingly. They were very different, however. The father was originally a barrister in London. Later he settled at The Wakes in Selborne, leading a blameless life “devoted …to family life, country pursuits, music, …charitable interests” and the improvement of his own garden and the Village of Selborne in general. He died in 1758. John’s son John (known in early life as “Gibraltar Jack” from his birthplace) became his Uncle Gilbert’s amanuensis before training as a surgeon.
He had quite an adventurous life, including being captured by a notorious French privateer during the Napoleonic wars, while on his way to India with his wife. He died in 1821. This informative and scholarly book, a great addition to works on Gilbert White’s background and the early days of Natural History study, is on sale in the Museum for £5.
