Ukrainian families
Advertisement
So much is available for families coming to the UK- but it’s often still a struggle for individuals to get the specific help they need. HCC has set up a direct query line specifically for councillors to answer these questions. So far, it is proving effective. If you are hosting a family, please contact me and I can seek a quick answer.
Household Support Fund
The fund for food, heating and fuel is now extended to all ages. Please contact your school, Citizens Advice for access to this fund. You may also like to check if you are entitled to benefits. Go to the www.gov.uk website and search for ‘benefits calculator’ or search on my website for links.
Warm Homes Scheme
If you live in private housing, and have an income of less than £30,000, you may be entitled to funds from the Warm Homes scheme to improve the insulation in your home. Please see my website for details- search ‘Warm Homes scheme’
Grants for projects
The County Councillor grant scheme is now open. I have a limited fund to distribute so you are strongly advised to talk to me first about your idea. Funding can be from £100 to £1000.
Walk to school week
I hope your family took part in Walk to School week in May. If a small change to the route could have made your journey easier, please let me know. The Bishop’s Sutton to Alresford path assessment has been made but the costs are astronomic. The A33 paths are overgrown too. Is your route used by many others? If it is well used, the path may be kept clear by feet walking along it, but report any difficulties on your route, and let me know of any ideas for future park & stride locations.
Glass recycling
Post lockdown, many of the public glass bins are reporting as full quicker than expected, even though most households have access to a Winchester Council doorstep collection. The County Council has withdrawn glass recycling at the HWRC’s, adding to this problem. A local pub owner describes public delivering wine bottles to his onsite container as the ‘walk of shame’! I have taken up the matter with city and county to ask them about capacity, but meanwhile, you may like to take this quiz from Heart Matters- it’s a simple look at how many calories in each glass of alcohol… A fun quiz from Heart Matters https:// tinyurl.com/calories-count
Winchester Go LD celebrate community spirit with successful outdoor event
Headbourne Worthy Garden & Craft Fair. Winchester Go LD, a charity that supports adults with learning disabilities, held their annual Garden & Craft Fair. The event was officially opened by retired Paralympian Gold Medallist Peter Hull MBE and Lady Portal MBE DL (Louisa).
The fair took place in the stunning grounds of Katie and Simon Browne and included gardening Q&A with Bob McQueen of Hilliers and a selection of plant stalls from nurseries across Hampshire and a variety of garden products, unique gifts and produce.
The atmosphere was no less fun despite the downpour and there were plenty of hot drinks and home-made lunches on hand in the relaxed sanctuary of the Winchester Go LD Café Marquee. “The community spirit is important as people with a learning disability can feel very isolated and have fewer chances to take part in leisure or social activities. This week is Mental Health awareness week and at Winchester Go LD we work hard to ensure our members have a voice and have the opportunity to connect with staff and our incredible volunteers, both in group settings and individually with Walk and Talks. “ explains Betty Chadwick, CEO. The charity launched it’s new member designs – T-shirts, T-towels and cards. “This is a place for us to share the creativity of our members with learning disabilities and a chance for people to invest in them. 100% of the profits goes back into supporting our members and our activities. Our members enjoy working with paint during our Tuesday activity session at the Arc in Winchester and this latest range is called “My Favourite Fruit.” It supports our Health and Nutrition learning in our workshops.”
Winchester Go LD were delighted to bring the Smoothie Bike to the Garden Fair after 2 years in lockdown. The one-wheeled, orange mobile drinks machine provides valuable training and experience - social and workrelated skills, promoting independence and boosting self-confidence.
For more information please visit winchestergold.org.uk
With hundreds of visitors, the funds raised will help with running costs for Winchester Go LD, who offer free memberships to adults with learning disabilities in the Winchester area.
Broadband
I continue to use HCC’s select committee process to challenge the very slow roll out of the Gigabit broadband scheme . Openreach cancelled their appearance in March, and are now coming to HCC in June. Thank you to our Community Fibre Partnership organisers who are continuing to press the case for faster broadband for your area- they truly are your local heroes!
Elections
Finally, thank you for voting in the local elections this year. I was elected as a city councillor again, but I will leave magazine reports on city matters to others and continue to concentrate on County matters in Jackie’s County Corner.

Five Godolphin teams complete Ten Tors Challenge 2022

Many congratulations to the Godolphin teams who successfully completed the Ten Tors Challenge 2022 on Dartmoor last month. This year, after two years away, Godolphin secured 5 teams on the start line for the Challenge with 30 girls taking part.
In the foggy gloom of Saturday morning, the teams set off on their adventures - 35 miles of self-sufficient travel across the wilds of Dartmoor. As the sun chased the fog away by 8 am the temperatures rose and provided an additional challenge for the girls to consider.
Back in the Okehampton campsite and across many Wiltshire and Hampshire homes the teams were tracked and followed as they made their way around their designated routes with nail baiting nervousness (some kitchens were even turned into Command Posts, with parents tracking every team). All teams progressed well through the day and remained on course in line with their route cards, making it to the night time camps in good order. Waking up at 4.30am on Sunday morning the teams were greeted with a thick fog as they readied themselves for a 6.00am start. The fog remained in place for several hours and provided some tricky navigation conditions initially.
Slowly, parents gathered at the finish line and welcomed the first tired team over the line at midday. The remaining teams marched in triumphantly over the next couple of hours with the final team arriving at 4.15pm to a huge cheer from all the parents and girls who had stayed on to see their teammates complete the Challenge. This year the most notable characteristic has been the togetherness and teamwork across the whole squad and there is no doubt that is the strength that got all of these girls to the end of the Challenge. Many of the girls are already asking about 45miles in two years' time!

It seems that news of the recycling option in Alresford has still not reached you all. The recycling point for Tetrapaks is at the western end of Alresford Station car park, next to the clothes recycling bins.
The lovely new Rubbish Bins for the Town Centre
were installed ready for the Watercress Festival, all part of our budget to improve the Market Town centres.

There is a well-hidden DEFRA consultation on tip access and the disposal of DIY waste. It closes on 4th July, you will need a cup of something restorative. https://consult.defra.gov.uk/waste-andrecycling/consultation-on-diy-waste-andcall-for-evidence
Housing Association Tenants
Have been given some very high service charge bills for 2022-23. We are seeing some success in having these reduced. Your first step should be to query the basis for these bills with your housing provider, if that does not result in a satisfactory result let us know.
