Matters of testing MOT Guide MOT modernisation has provided garages with a new up-to-date online testing system From September 2015, garages started the switch over process to the new, up-to-date web-based system enabling testers to enter MOT results whilst testing a vehicle.

What IT equipment and internet access will garages need to have in place to run the new system? Most garages will already have the right IT equipment in place to run the new system, so the majority shouldn’t need to buy anything new. If testers are able to visit websites without problems then they shouldn’t have issues using the new system.

What will be the main change once a garage has moved over to the new MOT system? Testers will be able to use a portable tablet to enter MOT results while testing a vehicle making it more convenient to capture notes. If they don’t want to use a tablet then they can still enter results after the test on a desktop computer or laptop.

What are the benefits of changing over? The new online web-based system is designed to be easier and quicker than the current VTS device. MOT testers, who’ve tried the new system, said how quickly they picked up how to enter the test results, making it a much easier and more efficient approach to MOT testing. Garages will also be able to check and update their details.

What will I need to start using the service? To start using the online MOT testing service you will need your user ID and password. You will also be asked for your 6 digit pin at important points of the testing process e.g. when you finish a test and print a certificate.

What happens if the internet stops working or if my laptop breaks? There will still be emergency testing, but this will only be available if the new MOT online system goes down for a significant amount of time or if there is widespread internet failure in the local area. If any IT stops working – including any desktop PC, laptop, tablet or local internet connection problems – then it will be the garage’s responsibility to fix.

Where can I go for more information? There is a section on Gov.UK which houses lots of publishing advice and guidance. There is also an MOT video providing more help on the switchover and also giving testers an idea of what is being achieved by implementing this new approach. https://mattersoftesting.blog.gov.uk/switching-over-to-the-new-mot-system/ https://www.gov.uk/topic/mot/modernisation
