Through education abroad, students of every background benefit from their experiences with other peoples, cultures, and countries, in ways not available on their home campus Together these experiences advance students’ personal, academic, and professional growth. In return, host communities and home institutions benefit from students participating in education abroad Widely accepted standards, sustained by best practices and implemented by well informed professionals, are critical to education abroad as a field of professional practice. The Forum’s Standards must remain adaptable to the unique mission and operational model of each institution or organization engaged in education abroad
The Forum envisions a future in which education abroad is integral to the mission of higher education, meets Standards of Good Practice, and is accessible to all students Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

WORKING TO advancE the sdgS
In March 2021, The Forum released guidelines for Advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through Education Abroad, which have been among our most accessed resources since their publication. These guidelines direct the education abroad sector toward social, economic, and environmental sustainability by connecting the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad and the UN SDGs They are accompanied by an SDG Impact Worksheet, which helps users visualize the connections between their work and the SDGs and formulate their own plans.
Sexual and gender based misconduct is harmful to an individual’s well being, can be disruptive to students’ educational experiences, and can damage an institution’s reputation While laws and regulations governing educational institutions’ and programs’ responsibility in such matters vary from country to country, the Standards of Good Practice for Education Abroad (5 1 6) tell us that having policies and procedures in place to prevent such misconduct wherever possible and to respond to it when it arises is not only best practice in our field but also mandated by the Standards.
GUIDELINES FOR BEST PRACTICES IN RESPONDING TO SEXUAL AND GENDER-BASED MISCONDUCT
Historically, U S federal laws have created specific obligations for U S colleges and universities regarding the prevention, reporting, and response to sexual and gender based misconduct that occurs when participants are abroad In 2017, The Forum on Education Abroad published the Sexual Misconduct, Education Abroad and Title IX/Clery Act guidance on compliance with those U S laws when they apply overseas. These current Guidelines are in part a response to the most recent Title IX Final Rule which negated overseas compliance, published in May 2020, and aim to provide colleagues with best practices in responding to incidents of sexual and gender-based misconduct During the preparation of these guidelines, the Department of Education withdrew its Clery Act Handbook (and ostensibly, according to a cover memo, obligations for Clery compliance in study abroad and distance learning) Many institutions maintain such obligations in their Codes of Conduct, and future administrations may return to the prior approach to addressing crime, violence, and harassment in distance learning and study abroad. Therefore, when a program or partnership involves at least one partner institution that is based in the U S , the following guidelines should be used in conjunction with the aforementioned guidance to ensure good practice and regulatory compliance

Future Nobel Laureates scholarship program
Fueled by a common belief that in order to change the world you need to experience it, EF College Study and The Forum implemented a first-of-its-kind, high-impact student scholarship program, in collaboration with EF's educational partner the Nobel Prize Museum. Development of this interdisciplinary program was guided by the Standards of Good Practice. The scholarship is dedicated to enhance students’ professional, personal and intercultural competence development by engaging in culturally relevant, ethical, and reciprocally beneficial activities in relation to the local context The inaugural cohort included 11 students from the U.S., Peru, and Ireland studying at a community college, an HBCU, and both public and private institutions The online course, developed and led by Dr David Wick and Dr Darla Deardorff, featured numerous distinguished speakers, including a Nobel Prize Laureate. Students worked in teams to tackle some of the most urgent issues of our time. Since students were unable to travel to Stockholm to participate in the 2021 Nobel Dialogue Week as planned, all students who successfully completed the course have had their scholarship extended so they may attend the 2022 Nobel Dialogue Week with the second cohort of students
