ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP

FOR’s Vision:

FOR National Council

We envision a world of justice, peace, and freedom. It is a revolutionary vision of a beloved community where differences are respected, conflicts are addressed nonviolently, oppressive structures are dismantled, and where people live in harmony with the earth, nurtured by diverse spiritual traditions that foster compassion, solidarity, and reconciliation.

FOR’s Mission: FOR-USA seeks to replace violence, war, racism, and economic injustice with nonviolence, peace, and justice. We are an interfaith organization committed to active nonviolence as a transforming way of life and as a means of radical change. We educate, train, build coalitions, and engage in nonviolent and compassionate actions locally, nationally, and globally. Since 1915, The Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) has carried on programs and educational projects concerned with domestic and international peace and justice, nonviolent alternatives to conflict, and the rights of conscience. A nonviolent, interfaith, tax exempt organization, FOR promotes nonviolence and has members from many religious and ethnic traditions. It is a part of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation (IFOR), which has affiliates in over 40 countries.

YEAR IN REVIEW The Brooklyn-based organization SOS (Save Our Streets) Crown Heights was the 2011 recipient of our National Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Award. Pictured below is one of their prize-winning banners.

Fiscal Year 2012 was a busy time for the Fellowship of Reconciliation. We centralized our international and domestic work under the manifesto of “Demilitarizing Life and Land (DLL). Our focus was to establish a foundation for our regional coordination strategy. Seeking to reinvigorate our regional and local relationships, we interviewed and connected with chapters and individual members based in identified regions to explore and support the issues being addressed in their local communities.

PROGRAM WORK

Social, Economic and Racial Justice In fiscal year 2012, FOR’s Program initiatives continued to actively engage in work and collaborations to demilitarize life and land. Program staff worked cross-currently in terms of research and action on various campaigns. The critical issue of gun violence and exposing its foundational support in the government and business became a centralizing theme addressed in both our domestic and international work. The first peace community was created by campesinos in northwestern Colombia who committed themselves to nonviolent resistance in the midst of war. Since its beginnings, more than 30 volunteers have served as human rights observers as part of the international community of the Colombia Peace Presence (CPP). FOR is present because we believe in the struggle and rights for safety of the peasant farmers and their families. The anniversary event looked at how accompaniment has worked over the last 15+ years since the beginning of the peace

“As far as the work goes, it is going to be difficult to leave behind the intense lifestyle of accompaniment. I have loved how life and work are completely intertwined, with no set schedule. One minute, I might find myself playing with the children; the next moment, I am making phone calls to various entities to assess the security in the area following a combat… As accompaniers we are not part of the Peace Community, but simply living here, one truly feels community… This has been my home, one I know I cannot replicate elsewhere.” —Chris Courtheyn, FOR volunteer, 2008-10

While challenged with the cancellation of a delegation to Iran in November 2011, Middle East Program Director Leila Zand continued FOR‘s mandate of advocating for an end to militaristic interventions in the Middle East. Along with representing FOR-USA at two major conferences,

Peace workers, members of the Border Free Movement, marching in Afghanistan.

one organized by The National Iranian American Council (NIAC), and the other by the Middle Eastern Studies Association (MESA), her advocacy work raised awareness in launching a new campaign focusing on Syria. Leila was also actively involved with Occupy Albany. She proposed a “War and Peace” caucus focusing on Iran, which was adopted. In addition, Leila organized the Feb. 4, 2012 demonstration in Albany, “No War, No Intervention, No Sanctions, No Assassinations in Iran.
