June 2021

The definitive guide to London living Editor’s letter Liz Skone James How beautiful does this month’s issue look? I couldn’t be more excited to – finally – have the incredible Cush Jumbo OBE on our cover. This was meant to happen last year, but, like many things, had to be delayed… We had lots of fun at the shoot (and it really shows in the images) and it was so interesting chatting to her about work and life. Read the interview to find out what she had to say about her role in BritBox thriller The Beast Must Die, her upcoming debut as Hamlet at the Young Vic, juggling motherhood with work and how it felt to be awarded the OBE. Elsewhere in the magazine, we show you how bringing plants into your interior scheme can have benefits far exceeding the aesthetic – though there’s no denying that they do look gorgeous, too. And we’ve a coastal chic inspired Wish List, especially for those of you who haven’t yet managed a well deserved escape. If you do happen to fall into that category, head to our travel section for some ideas on UK-based holidays that don’t depend on the government’s traffic light system. Finally, if you are in London this month, for the first time in a long time you’ll find plenty to keep you busy out and about, including exhibitions, theatre and lots of exciting new restaurant openings – I hope you can all get out and enjoy some of what’s on offer. Until next time…

EXHIBITION

Charlotte Perriand: The Modern Life 19 June-5 September, Design Museum

It’s been 25 years since London shone a spotlight on this remarkable woman’s life and work. The Design Museum are now revisiting the pioneering French furniture designer, whose work was so ahead of her time and still feels so relevant. As far back as the 1920s Perriand was designing open-plan living spaces so that women didn’t feel trapped in their homes. She is, of course, best known for her modernist furniture pieces, most notably the iconic Chaise Longue Basculante. In this comprehensive expo we’re invited to step inside recreations of Perriand’s interiors and recline in some of her most recognisable pieces, alongside a deep dive into her creative processes through sketches, photographs, scrapbooks and prototypes. A must-visit for the Capital’s design-lovers. 224-238 Kensington High Street, W8 (020 3862 5900; designmuseum.org)

CULTURE

WORDS by ALI HOWARD

EXHIBITION

Andy Denzler: Anatomy of the Mind 4-27 June, Opera Gallery

In this dreamy solo show renowned Swiss artist Denzler presents 20 new works, all created during lockdown, and all particularly pertinent as we emerge, licking our wounds, from the strangest year ever. Anatomy of the Mind explores the human capacity to travel, even when our physical bodies cannot. The result is a series of arresting largescale artworks in Denzler’s signature distorted style with a dramatic curiosity and elusiveness. The artist uses a Leica camera to take the initial image, but rather than painstakingly reproducing the snap, he layers the paintings, merging the figurative with the abstract, skilfully integrating scenes from everyday life with hazy landscapes from his own imagination. “I started to paint these places of longing; it is a form of escapism and a desire to create invented places,” he says. Not to be missed. 134 New Bond Street, W1S (020 7491 2999; operagallery.com)

CULTURE AUDIO TOUR

King’s Cross: Art + Culture tour Throughout June, King’s Cross

Whether you know Russell Tovey from his roles in Being Human, Him & Her, or Years and Years, you might not know that the actor is also quite the art afficionado. In his brand new audio guide, Tovey takes visitors on a tour of one of the Capital’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, exploring the rich art, culture and history of King’s Cross. “We’re all emerging from a pretty crazy, insular year but we’re so lucky to be in London at this time where there’s so much art and culture at our fingertips,” he says. “It’s the perfect way to reconnect with our great city. I think this summer is going to be all about rediscovery – of our city, our self, our friends and family, our passions. My advice, start with King’s Cross as it’s a real gem and there’s so much to see.” Get your walking boots on, it’s time to fall in love with London all over again.

THEATRE

Extended 2021 Season

The tour can be accessed via an online app with free Wi-Fi available throughout King’s Cross. (kingscross.co.uk/russell-tovey-arts-tour)

17 June-25 September, Open Air Theatre We could not be more thrilled that our favourite amphitheatre has announced a jam-packed season of theatre, comedy and cinema – and as if to make up for last year’s culture void, the powers that be have extended it into late September, come rain or shine. Kicking off with a classic, Kimberley Sykes directs Romeo and Juliet while Timothy Sheader’s re-imagining of Carousel promises a triumphant return to live song and dance. There’s fun for little Londoners,

too, with productions of Anansi the Spider and Dragons and Mythical Beasts on offer, while OAT’s MOREoutdoor series features appearances from the likes of Aisling Bea and Jimmy Carr, alongside screenings of cinematic favourites Moulin Rouge! and The Shining. A fittingly glorious riot of culture. Inner Circle, Regent’s Park, NW1 (0333 400 3562; openairtheatre.com)

SCULPTURE

CoExistence

From 14 June, Royal Parks London’s runners and early morning dog walkers might be in for a surprise this month as the Royal Parks play host to a large-scale public art exhibit with an environmental focus. CoExistence features over 100 life sized elephant sculptures crafted from lantana by artisans from the Adivasi tribal communities. That they’re placed in our city parks, flanked by dense urbanisation, is incongruous, it’s jarring – and that’s the point. The aim is to induce a collective empathy for these magnificent creatures whose natural habitat is increasingly threatened. Funds raised from the sales of the herd will protect rural communities from conflicts with wild animals, highlighting the need for a wider ecosystem and an expansion of protected areas to give other life the necessary space to exist. At St James’s Park, Green Park and Berkeley Square. If you would like to provide a home for one of the elephants, contact lucy@elephant-family.org (coexistence.org)

ush Jumbo has not had a bad pandemic, all things considered – though she worries that this sort of comment could be taken the wrong way. Back in the spring of 2020 she was packing up her life and heading back to London after five years spent living in New York with her husband and son while filming The Good Fight. The plan was to go straight into rehearsals for Hamlet at the Young Vic. As we all know, plans went awry. “The theatres closed, but then suddenly my screen work piled up instead, because we were still able to shoot,” she explains. Once the industry worked out how things could be done safely – with regular testing, masks on set and production bubbles – filming projects were able to resume. In this way, The Beast Must Die was filmed on the Isle of Wight during the second lockdown last year. Cush plays the lead in the drama, which is now streaming on BritBox. Recalling that time, she tells me: “I feel like in the middle part, the loss of jobs started to kick in, and it was very evident what was going on with the NHS, and it was really difficult for everybody, so I think that we were really lucky to be away, especially somewhere as beautiful as the Isle of Wight, and to be able to just take a breath and get away from the stuff that was going on.” The series tells the story of Frances, a single mother who tragically loses her very young son in a hit and run at the beginning of the show. “That is where we find her, and she kind of goes on a revenge mission, to seek out the person she suspects has done it, and to murder him,” Cush reveals. “I was looking for projects that really excited me, and it was by far one of the best scripts I have ever read. Just in terms of the pace, the psychology of it, and how gripping it was. I couldn’t put it down. Although it sounds quite dark, it is also very, very entertaining, and twisty and turny. Half of my time is spent acting, but the other half I am watching stuff, like everybody else, and it just seemed like the kind of thing that I would like to watch.” That said, she hasn’t watched any of it yet, and she has no plans to do so any time soon. “I think unless you are incredibly vain, it is human nature to find it very strange to watch yourself. And I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so I tend to be over judgemental about the wrong kind of things,” she tells me, explaining why she always needs to put distance between herself and a performance before watching it. Instead, she has learnt to feel when something is going right, and to trust that innate feeling.

Your home, your life

And her husband has had to “learn to deal with being a year behind” when it comes to her most talked about projects. Of course, theatre is different, and there is no doubt that he will be among the first to see Cush’s long-awaited debut as Hamlet at the Young Vic in September. And she could not be more thrilled that the project is finally coming to fruition. “It has been nearly two years to get it on now, because the first time round it clashed with a lot of other work, and then Covid happened, so it has just felt like the crest of a wave almost. Rising and falling – I’ve been really, really close to doing it and then, nope it’s not going to happen, and then really, really close… I think, for me, being able to do it now, as theatres are reopening, it is going to take on a whole new optimism,” she tells me, happily. “Just the very fact that audiences will be able to come back, and that people’s jobs will be able to restart, that gives an extra level of excitement to the project. I think it will strangely feel like the show is even more fulfilling than if I had done it the first time around.” Though it has been a long time coming, Cush does not yet know a great deal about how the play will be treated. “As you probably know, theatre works a little differently to film,” she explains. “You can only map out so much – maybe a bit of your design, a bit of your visualisation of it. I have worked very closely with Greg [Hersov, the director], and with Kwame [Kwei-Armah, Artistic Director at the Young Vic] over the last year, but you know, most of your show comes from rehearsal. The only thing that I know for sure is that I am playing him as a him.” Cush tells me that she “discovered Shakespeare really deeply,” while studying at the Brit School, adding. “I found my way to the business through the theatre. Which is why I guess I find myself pulled back there all the time. I have known for a few years that Hamlet was something that I was going to want to do.” The time had to be right, though – Cush strongly believes that any performance of his work needs contemporary relevance. “It is quite pointless doing any kind of Shakespeare unless you know what the point of doing it is,” she explains. “Hamlet is all about a rotten State. A situation where the elite are out of step with the people, and somebody is born into the middle of this and is quite confused by it. So, it is about the coming generation, and Greg and I both found that idea really interesting in respect of so much that has happened over the last few years, socially and politically.” On a more personal level the time felt right, too. “There are always going to be reasons why you are going to be put off doing certain projects, through fear,” Cush admits. “It might be that you are afraid of working with ‘that’ actor who you feel is

INTERVIEW Cush wears: dress (galvanlondon.com), shoes (aquazzura. com), jewellery (jessiethomas jewellery.com)

“There was something about going through that pregnancy and coming out the other side of it. Maybe it’s just pushing a human being out of your body and thinking, f**king hell, I can do anything” way out of your league, or there are too many words to learn. Whatever it is. And with Hamlet it is like everything. The whole thing. And on top of that you have got so much history and there is so much hanging over it in terms of what people think it should be. I honestly didn’t really feel brave enough until, actually it was after I had my son, who is about to turn three. There was something about going through that pregnancy and coming out the other side of it. Maybe it’s just pushing a human being out of your body and thinking, f**king hell, I can do anything – what exactly am I afraid of after that?” she exclaims. I wonder how she is coping with managing career and family life. “Oh yeah, it is so easy: It’s a piece of cake! What is everybody complaining about?” she jokes. “I think what I have learnt is that everything costs something,” she adds, more seriously. “I do not prescribe to this idea of the perfect mother, or the woman who can do everything. It is literally impossible, and the pressure that you put on yourself is not sustainable. Sometimes I can give 100 per cent to being a mum and being around and present, and at other times, when I’m working, I can’t. But if I concern myself with the mother part of it then I am not going to do my job properly. And it is the same when I am writing, or when I am travelling, or having to do other things for work. But ultimately, I feel like working allows me to be more of a whole person, and the more of a whole person I am, the better mother I am.” Cush is reassured by her own childhood experience. “My mum was a working parent, but the time that she did spend with me, those are some of my strongest memories. The things we would do together and what we would talk about and where we would go. That is what you remember,” she recalls. “And my strongest feeling when I look back is that it was kind of inspiring to me that she went out and did what she did. And people admired her at work. I remember that really clearly.” She hopes that her son will admire her in the same way; it is hard to believe that he won’t. Cush’s critically acclaimed work saw her awarded an OBE for her services to drama in the Queen’s Birthday Honours two years ago. “It was absolutely amazing,” she tells me, recalling the ceremony. “A true honour. And the Queen, God she knows her stuff. She is sharp as a tack and she knew everything about me when she was talking to me.” The recognition means a lot to Cush. “I am born in London – I think of myself as a British person, a black British person, and there are lots of different emotions rolled up in that, because you are multi-layered in terms of your background and where you come from, but also, who you are,” she explains. “Having those letters after your name, I have never seen as anything other than a positive, because it just means that more people

who come from my part of London, or grew up where I grew up, or look like me, look at me and think, well that’s a real achievement, maybe that’s something that I could do. There is no reason why, just because you are born in one part of London, you can’t make a success of yourself in any area if you apply yourself. And it means that people listen to you when you are wanting to talk about or support important causes. It is a lot harder for them not to reply to your email when you have got an OBE!” she grins. The OBE might have been a highlight, but it is in no way the pinnacle of Cush’s career. She is currently filming a new Netflix adaptation of Harlan Coben thriller Stay Close, after which she will go straight into rehearsals for Hamlet. “And there are other things after that, but to be honest, right now I cannot think past it,” she admits. “Because I think you just have to give yourself over to it and not think about what comes after. We’ll see if I have arms and legs left by the end of the year. I think that if I can get to Christmas, I will be OK!” That said, she is still managing to find time for writing. “I have just been finishing a play for Audible, who have a theatre arm now,” she tells me. “So, I have been working on something with them. And also, I am quite interested in devising some children’s theatre, so I have been doing some bits and pieces of that in between, because, as I have been telling you, I have so much time on my hands!” she laughs. “I am jam packed with ideas – I can barely get them out. So, when I do get a pocket of time, I like to sit down and do a bit. You know, no pressure on myself, I just do it when I can, and it gives me a little bit of headspace.” Cush’s passion for the arts is clear – this is undoubtedly what she was born to do. “I have been on stages for as long as I can remember,” she confirms. “I was definitely an attention seeker – I am one of seven children, and there is never enough attention to go around, so maybe, even subconsciously, I was absolutely loving that people thought I was good at something and wanted to come and be in the front row,” she smiles. “But also, I always really loved language and poetry, and writing stories and telling stories, and that kept going and going through my younger years. You know, writing shows, and poems and songs… So, I guess it all rolled into one. I really, really enjoy pretending to be other people, and taking on another skin, becoming somebody else. This is all I ever wanted to do for a job, to be an actor. I mean, with a name like Cush Jumbo I don’t know what else I was meant to be!” The Beast Must Die is streaming now on BritBox

Look good, feel better FABRIC RECOMMENDS

Ana Trida Lymphatic Drainage and Modelling Massage I have booked an at home appointment with therapist Ana, and I can’t wait; it is longer than I care to remember since I last enjoyed a massage. This is no ordinary massage though – Ana is a specialist in lymphatic drainage (she originally trained as a nurse, working in oncology and bone marrow transplantation) and has been recommended to me as I’ve been feeling sluggish and bloated, as well as generally run down. And while it might sound purely functional, I’m promised a treatment that is as restorative as it is hardworking. Ana is punctual and professional, and her warmth immediately puts me at ease. She sets up in the bedroom, following the various Covid-safe protocols, and afterwards we go through a quick consultation. She asks me various questions about my general health and wellbeing and explains that she will start by using gentle pressure designed to stimulate the lymphatic system to work better, eliminating excess fluid and toxins, strengthening the immune system, increasing oxygen supply to tissues, and improving circulation. Afterwards, she will move on to the firmer pressure of the modelling techniques, which will relax the muscles, improve the appearance of my skin, and help with body tone. With soft music playing, I feel like I am in a spa. The massage is gentle and oh-so relaxing, and I almost drift off. It is such a joy to experience this kind of human touch after so long. All too soon it is over. I am left feeling light and energised. Ana has taken before and after photos of my stomach to illustrate the benefits of the modelling techniques and the difference is staggering (and gets even more pronounced over the next 24 hours). It’s no exaggeration to say Ana is a miracle worker; I can’t wait to see her again. LSJ From £200. For details, and to book, see anatridatherapist.co.uk

JEWELLERY

Buy less, buy better Sales of ethical products in the UK have risen for the 14th year in a row, with a third of us now wanting to spend money on brands that make a positive social and environmental impact. If you, too, are looking for cutting edge design with a conscience, we’ve just discovered Seekd, a new online platform for ethical jewellery and accessory designers. The site works with a handpicked selection of producers to curate monthly

42

collections of the most stunning pieces, making it easier for you to invest in something that you will love forever. Best of all, every brand represented on the site has been chosen because of its desire to give back and create a better way of shopping, be that through the use of sustainable materials, like Tonya O’Hara who crafts statement jewellery from salvaged acrylic, or through philanthropy, like Snazzy,

whose products are handmade by artisans in an ethical partnership across developing countries. Founder, Fay Cannings says, “To make a change, it’s up to us to make better decisions on how often we shop and what we add to our wardrobes. It’s all about choosing brands based on our own values, not just the monetary value of our purchases.” Discover more at seekd.co.uk

STYLE&WELLBEING LINGERIE

You’re free Londoner Alex Pluthero wasn’t going to let a little thing like the pandemic stand in the way of achieving her dreams. Within the first few months of launching Wear My Freedom, her premium underwear brand in June last year, she had sold thousands of bras, with customers claiming that they were the most comfortable they had ever worn. As a size 32G, Alex was all too familiar with the pain of poorly fitting bras and uncomfortable underwires, and she wanted to offer women something better. She explains: “Many D+ bras that are available on the high street are incredibly dated… not only the design but the actual engineering of the bra. Once you go above a D, bras need to be constructed differently rather than just doubling up patterns on a sewing machine.” Engineered for comfort and support, the Freedom Bra is wire-free and features a signature cross-over centre, which is not just part of the sleek design but creates natural separation and prevents irritation. The fabric and straps are soft and gentle on skin, while scratchy labels have been scrapped, and care instructions are instead printed on the hook and eye. And the bra’s wider under band smooths as it lifts and its seam-free design means no cup lines, so it is completely hidden when worn under a t-shirt. We particularly love the company’s collaboration with Free The Girls, an organisation that helps survivors of sex trafficking to earn an income by selling bras in the secondhand marketplace. Simply select a free donation mailbag at checkout and post your unwanted bras back to Wear My Freedom, who will donate them to the charity. Seriously uplifting stuff.

Low Pressure Fitness with Samantha Lisbôa I’ve heard a lot about Low Pressure Fitness as an alternative core training technique, and about how it can help with pelvic floor dysfunction. The term ‘hypo’ refers to a reduction – this form of exercise reduces pressure to the abdominal and pelvic cavities, lifting the pelvic organs and increasing core muscle activity. Traditional exercises and ab work, coupled with the effects of gravity in most daily activities, are

hyperpressive – they increase pressure, making things worse. Samantha Lisbôa is a trained Pilates instructor and physiotherapist – and one of the few people in the UK who is trained in this new technique. Offering at home one-to-one training across the Capital, she is a lady in high demand, but I manage to grab a coveted slot. She arrives with an ingenious piece of portable Pilates equipment that

£55, available in Black and Clay, in sizes 28-40, D-HH cup (wearmyfreedom.com)

fixes into a standard doorframe, recreating the tower reformers one finds in studios. We start with this, and a full body Pilates workout. As I work, Samantha, in her physiotherapist’s hat, makes physical adjustments to improve posture and alignment. We move on to attempting to create the stomach vacuum which is at the heart of hypopressives. It involves breathing into the chest cavity, rather than the stomach, something which does not come naturally to me. Samantha patiently talks me through the process and massages the muscles under my ribs to help to open the chest cavity. It looks like I will not achieve it, but Samantha perseveres, and I eventually succeed. There’s more work to be done, but I’m excited by the prospect, and implementing it into my routine. EXERCISE

The future of fitness The past year has brought about some changes that we can’t wait to be rid of, while there are other aspects we wouldn’t mind holding on to. Like the explosion of virtual fitness – there’s something to be said for being able to take our favourite class at any time, anywhere. Which isn’t to say that we don’t miss the motivational benefits of being part of a community of likeminded folk IRL. And we’re not alone, luxury health and wellness brand Psycle says that 80 per cent of their customers would like access to a combination of in-studio and at-home workouts going forward. Earlier this year, Psycle at Home launched the most immersive, integrated home workout experience, forever changing and enhancing how we are moving and feeling at home during lockdown and beyond. And now that their studios are reopening, a new membership option will allow members to continue to benefit from both. Psycle Flex allows clients to wrap their fitness around their lives, rather than the other way around. Offering five in-studio credits as well as unlimited access to Psycle at Home, with daily live stream and on-demand classes, for just £100 per month. For details, see psyclelondon.com

Feast your eyes on this month’s finest CHARITY

Time for tea Oh, how we’ve missed those little luxuries like a proper afternoon tea. For a slightly different take on the most English of traditions, head down to Petersham Nurseries this month. Their new afternoon tea will help to raise funds for conservation charity Elephant Family and awareness of their new campaign, CoExistence. Over the past five years, a collective of artists in the jungles of Tamil Nadu, Southern India, have carved majestic life-size elephants from dried lantana camara, an invasive species of weed which chokes their forest habitat. Two of these are on display at the restaurant, and the remainder of the majestic herd of over 100 sculptures are now being

sold to raise funds which will enable people to live in harmony with wildlife globally. The tea has a distinct Indian influence, with a hibiscus bellini to start, spring pea and potato samosas, coronation chicken flatbreads and mushroom idli, a pillowy rice and lentil cake topped with wild mushrooms. Drawing on Southern India’s abundant seafood traditions, there will be crisp pani puri dough balls filled with Portland crab, while the Scotch egg is reimagined as a delicately flavoured kedgeree Scotch quail egg. Rum Babas, Earl Grey tea cakes, banana and turmeric macarons, mango layered slices and coconut eclairs will round off the feast. £55 per person, £10 of which will go to Elephant Family. We’re looking forward to being transported to the Med this month, if only through a visit to new Soho restaurant INO (with overseas holidays still in question at time of going to press, it might be the closest we get to a summer holiday). The latest restaurant from Andreas Labridis, Nikos Roussos and Georgianna Hiliadaki – founders of Marylebone’s OPSO and Athens based two Michelin-starred Funky Gourmet – it has been inspired by the traditions of the Greek Psistaria grill. The opening menu will celebrate cooking over charcoal, with a collection of comforting small plates designed for sharing – think prime short ribs, house cured mackerel and lamb sweetbread skewers. Also on offer are a variety of light day-boat fish dishes such as catch of the day carpaccio and sardines sashimi, and signature dishes include ‘Secreto’ souvlaki with Iberico pork, and fish ‘cheeks’ with tomato and parsley salsa. With a name derived from the ancient Greek word for wine, it will come as no surprise to hear that INO will showcase Greece’s most exciting producers via an entirely Greek wine list, curated by Andreas. All available by the glass, the list will change frequently and focus on innovative producers currently creating a stir in the country’s wine scene. And the interiors offer a taste of Greece too, with Mediterranean terrazzo marble, original brickwork, wooden tabletops, custom-made wine cages and cast-iron shelving, made by Nikos’ father, a Greek silverware artisan. We suggest popping in after nightfall, when the lights will be dimmed and the music turned up in true Greek style. 4 Newburgh Street, W1F (020 3701 6618; inogastrobar.com)

For Jacob Kenedy, founder of much-loved Soho gelateria Gelupo, nothing says summer quite like a bowl of ice cream or a refreshing sorbet, and we’d have to agree. His new book, Gelupo Gelato: A Delectable Palette of Ice Cream Recipes is out now (Bloomsbury Publishing, £14.99). A frosty masterclass in the simple art of gelato, it takes us through everything from the basics of a classic granita, to barely-melting semifreddo and ice-cream-stuffed brioche buns. In celebration of the release, we asked Jacob to share a favourite from the book. He says: “This is a very English granita, if such a thing is not contradictory – three flavours that, above all, scream of Queen and Country. It would be suitable alongside finger sandwiches and cream tea, and probably has no place in the pages of the book, but here you have it.”

INGREDIENTS 4 large cucumbers | 100ml gin | 75ml elderflower cordial | 180g caster sugar | Possibly a little water

METHOD Juice the cucumbers (with their skins): if you have a juicer, so much the better. If not, grate them finely or purée them in a food processor, then strain through a sieve or muslin into a measuring jug, twisting and squeezing hard to extract all the juice. Stir together the cucumber juice with the gin, elderflower cordial and sugar until the sugar has dissolved. Check the volume is a litre – if it’s short, make it up with water. Transfer the mixture to a wide dish and put it in the freezer. Once it starts to freeze at the edges, every 10–15 minutes stir it with a fork or whisk it, until the mixture is almost completely frozen and icy (this will take a long time – perhaps 4 hours). It is ready to serve in this slightly wet, slushy state. To keep it longer, let it freeze solid, then before serving take it out to thaw for 20 minutes or so, breaking it up with a fork. (Chill your serving glasses for at least 20 minutes in the freezer before you serve.)

What’s the last thing you cooked? One of my favourites – crab spaghetti with fresh Cornish crab, chilli, Thai basil and butter.

What do you cook on days off? I cook dishes that are seasonal and weather dependent, whether that is Vietnamese cuisine or classic British food. In the summer, I absolutely love barbecuing with friends and family. One dish I love to cook whatever the weather is a classic English roast – chicken, Paxo stuffing (which I named my dog after) and all the trimmings.

What’s your signature dish? At Kitchen Table we change our menu daily. If I had to name a signature dish at home, I have been known to cook scampi with smiley faces, peas, tartare sauce and lemon wedges!

Best meal you’ve ever eaten? At Alinea in Chicago – ten years ago now, but nothing has beaten it. Every course was sensational and offered something I had never experienced before or since.

FABRIC PROMOTION XUL pride themselves on finding the right strategy to suit the client’s needs

Let there be light

XUL Architecture believe in the strength of natural light to positively improve not only physical space but also the wellbeing, productivity, and creativity of those who inhabit that space

orth London based architecture practice XUL’s name came about during research into ways of bringing natural light into architecture. XUL is an anagram of lux, meaning ‘light’ in Latin and also derives from the measurement of light – ‘luminous flux’. In any design produced by XUL, bringing natural light into typically darker parts of the home from at least three directions is imperative. “We’ve all spent a great deal of time at home in the past year, and during that time we’ve realised just how important natural light is,” explains director Sebastian Sandler. “To maintain a high level of wellbeing, it’s crucial to consider how we can allow more light in through architectural details.” This approach has become a signature for XUL Architecture, enabling the team to look at each project from a unique perspective and to creatively overcome challenges. XUL’s motto is ‘There is always another way’ and through their unique perspective, the team explore alternative design solutions as well as finding the right strategy to suit each client’s needs.

XUL believe that natural light should flood the home from multiple sources

XUL utilised this method on a recent project in the desirable Hampstead Garden Suburb. The homeowner wanted to improve circulation within the house at the same time as extending to create a larger, formal living room. XUL approached this project by reconsidering the internal layout issues, and ensuring that each space was filled with light from multiple directions. To create better sightlines, a glass door opens into the central vestibule, while garden access is through a single glazed door at the rear – in this way there is an unobstructed view from the front of the property right through to the back. A tilted skylight brings more light into the kitchen and living area, which has undergone renovations to open up the room, creating a cohesive space that can be used by the family throughout the day. A skylight was added above the landing to create a third direction of light. Thanks to projects like this, XUL Architecture have become known across north London for bringing light in to both traditional and contemporary homes and improving the wellbeing of homeowners. Interiors news Make your house a home Garden glow

With rules of social engagement changed beyond recognition it seems apt that outdoor dining should be awarded a fresh new aesthetic. Jennifer Newman’s SS21 indoor/outdoor collection puts the concept of “the optimistic garden” at the fore, with funky furniture pieces in earthy shades, bold primaries and neon brights. Hand-welded from recycled aluminium, the Block series, with its hard-edged angular shaping, is a boundary-pushing take on the conventional picnic table. Embrace the bold this summer.

Back to earth

The pandemic has thrown up all number of creative surprises – the latest being Henry Holland’s foray into ceramics. The former House of Holland director discovered his love of pottery during lockdown and found it to be a meditative endeavour so different from the frenetic world of fashion. His debut ceramics collection, available exclusively at Liberty, comprises chalice bowls, serving platters, plates and beakers, all crafted using the Japanese nerikomi method: stacking, folding and rolling coloured clay before handmoulding it into functional (and fashion-forward) tableware. A match made in Brit Punk heaven, BeauVamp, who create vintage-inspired silk lampshades, have teamed up with Blackpop, a homeware brand with a joyfully anarchic take on fabric design. The lighting company already subverts the traditional with its slimline shaping and excessively long, dip-dyed fringing. Excitingly, their statement Tiffany shades now come in Blackpop’s trademark colour clash textiles. Choose Morpho, Vanguard, Dizzy or Birdland.

Contemporary rug makers Nordic Knots have launched an irresistible collection inspired by the architecture of the 1920s design movement, Swedish Grace. Elegant and refined, the Art Deco carpets playfully break conventions of symmetry with their abstract geometrics and offhand use of colour and pattern. Intricately hand-knotted, the statement rugs recall Stockholm’s iconic buildings while their muted earthy tones bring homely warmth to the sharpest lines.

HOUSE PLANTS OFFER A WEALTH OF FEEL-GOOD BENEFITS THAT GO BEYOND THE AESTHETIC – MAKE SURE YOUR INDOOR GREENERY GROWS, AND THRIVES, IN EVERY SPACE

Parlour Palm

WORDS by ALI HOWARD

Weeping Fig

THE LIVING ROOM Choose: Wild Banana (Strelitzia Nicolai), Weeping Fig (Ficus Benjamina), Swiss Cheese plant (Monstera Deliciosa)

All cutout plant imagery supplied by The Stem (thestem.co.uk)

Typically the largest open space in the home, the living room can take some serious scale when it comes to house plants. Here, you can afford to go large. The oversized leaves of the Wild Banana plant not only offer big impact, but a taste of the exotic, too – ideal for a boho-inspired décor. With its waxy green leaves and woven exposed stem, the Weeping Fig is a beautiful addition to the living room. This is an elegant indoor tree that successfully blurs inside and out, while the everpopular Swiss Cheese plant brings retro ’70s charm, is easy to look after, and can reach the heady heights of the ceiling.

THE BEDROOM Choose: Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum), Parlour Palm (Chamaedorea Elegans), ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia) House plants have the ability to absorb carbon dioxide and convert it to oxygen, which is why a bedroom filled with air purifying greenery is a particularly relaxing one. Known to increase humidity, the Peace Lily, boasting attractive dark green leaves and white ellipse-shaped flowers, brings a Zenlike calm. With its lush feathery fronds, the Parlour Palm also scores high on air cleaning properties, removing pollutants such as benzene and carbon monoxide, while bringing a rich green colour splash to the bedroom. The ZZ Plant, with its smooth waxy leaves, can reflect sunlight, brightening up a darker sleeping space – and it makes a soothing addition to the nightstand.

THE BATHROOM Choose: English Ivy (Hedera Helix Variegated), Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia Reginae), Boston Fern (Nephrolepis Exaltata) Finding plants to suit your bathroom is no easy task. This is often a space with low lighting, high humidity, and wild variations in temperature – when the bath’s running or the shower’s on, the environment is practically tropical. English Ivy is a great choice thanks to its filtering qualities. The humidity-loving vine also adds instant glamour and can be hung high where there’s little floor space to accommodate a larger pot. The striking Bird of Paradise plant suits bathrooms blessed with lots of natural daylight. It loves humidity and brings an exotic look to our favourite pamper room, while the humidity-friendly Boston Fern offers a rich visual texture with its crinkled lime coloured foliage.

THE KITCHEN Choose: Heart-Leaf Philodendron (Philodendron Scandens Brasil), windowsill herbs, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis Miller) A splash of greenery breathes life into our cooking spaces, which are often clean-lined but can also be clinical. In a busy, functional kitchen, surface and floor space are extra precious so look for trailing house plants that can be suspended above a central island via hanging planters or terrariums. The HeartLeaf Philodendron, native to tropical jungle floors, works wonders here: it’s easy to maintain, fast-growing, and offers a dramatic look without encroaching on food prep surfaces. Practical plants that really earn their place in the kitchen include herbs – get creative with a fresh herb garden at the window, and Aloe Vera – the spiky succulent’s inner gel being a natural remedy for the chef’s inevitable cuts and burns.

Your home, your life

THE HOME OFFICE Choose: Chinese Money Plant (Pilea Peperomioides), Clusia Princess (Clusia Rosea), Snake Plant (Dracaena Trifasciata) Whether you have a dedicated study room or a makeshift workstation in the corner of the bedroom, you can counter the corporate look with well-chosen house plants. Our homes have already been pushed to their spatial limits with new WFH arrangements and so smaller desk plants are the way forward here. The Chinese Money Plant, with its flat round leaves, makes a cheery addition to any desktop. It loves the daylight and thrives on just a light watering – music to the ears of busy workers. Another plant that will forgive a little bit of neglect is the ornamental Clusia Princess, this one, with its strong waxy leaves, grows quickly but an annual trim will keep it desk-friendly while the Snake Plant, with its striking sword-like leaves, removes toxins and airborne nasties – great for keeping a clear head.

NATURE Litta Sohi is a London-based interior designer with an international outlook. Whether residential or commercial, big or small, her calming spaces borrow heavily from Mother Nature How do you work with clients to achieve a peaceful and relaxing home? I design homes that reflect the personality of my clients. I always have a good talk and evaluation to start with, and I maintain close contact throughout the entire process to make sure we are on the same track. For me, it’s all about finding the right balance between objects and furniture, combined with the right colour schemes and lighting. Finding the right balance will create the perfect hygge feeling: one of relaxation, peacefulness, and of being at home.

Tell us about your Scandinavian influence, and how that relates to nature Growing up in Denmark, hygge had a very special meaning to me. In my interior design projects I usually add a small element of hygge wherever I can. It brings warmth, cosiness and soul to any space. I’m all about nature, it has a big impact on my work and I try to incorporate as many natural elements and materials as I can. How does nature affect mood in our living spaces? I’m a firm believer that bringing nature into our homes influences our mood and wellbeing. Spending time in nature can have a powerful and positive effect on our mood. It’s proven to alleviate signs of depression, stress and anxiety. Can you tell us about the kind of natural materials and textures you like to use in your work? Mother Nature has given us the luxury of utilising her raw materials. I particularly love the use of wood; I think it’s a fantastic material that’s

not only pretty and practical, but also has a naturally warm texture. I’ll often incorporate bamboo in the form of lampshades or baskets to create a softer natural texture in my spaces. And what about colours? What better colour palette is there than nature’s own? The natural nuances bring out the perfect harmony. I’m inspired by colours from nature, particularly the ever-evolving shades that change seasonally, like leaves falling from the trees. Do you like to blur the boundaries between inside and outside space? Yes! Times are changing, traditional conservatories of the past are now being transformed into open spaces with a waterfall of plants and huge windows or glass doors, so that both inside and outside begin to feel like one shared space. What can house plants bring to a space? I love to incorporate house plants into my interior design projects. Not only do they make spaces appealing and are beautiful to look at, but they also give great texture to any room. On top of this, one obvious benefit of house plants is that they play a role in our overall health, as they’re calming and reduce stress. AT HOME WITH Virginie and husband James made the opposite move to most people, relocating from the countryside to raise their kids in London, so it was important that their city space worked exactly as they wanted it to

What do you usually look for in a home? Light and a sense of space: both are non-negotiable. We were lucky to find this flat as the very high ceilings (4.5m), the exposure, and the big windows make it extremely light and airy. Having a garden was a big plus, which we were not originally expecting when we were searching for a place, but it turned out to be very important over the past 12 months in particular.

At home with

VIRGINIE CHARLES-DEAR With help from Frank & Faber’s Sarah Ellison, this grand four-bed, four-bath garden flat now deftly mixes classic and contemporary styles WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by PAUL CRAIG

The property dates back to 1865. How important is character, and a sense of history? I did some research before buying the flat to understand how and when it was built, and to identify which features were original. We restored some, in particular the marble fireplace in the front room. I love to think about how the first occupants of our building would have lived at the time, when a family would have owned the whole house. I found the sales particulars from 1907 of a house a couple of doors down that described “the ample domestic offices, stone staircase, numerous bedrooms, and good sized reception rooms, including a lofty double drawing room divided by a carved Moorish arch.” Did you do anything structurally when you moved in? Our original intention was to do a decorative update. However, when we started working with interior design studio Frank & Faber we realised that structural changes were needed to achieve a design to suit our lifestyle and practical requirements, as well as significantly improving the flow and aesthetic of the property. We ended up doing a large-scale structural overhaul removing all except one internal wall on the ground floor. It was quite ambitious from a structural and engineering perspective but has transformed the house into an amazing open-plan space, which really suits our needs.

Above: contemporary fixtures and fittings overlay the period shell in the living room, while the bold ceiling colour makes a feature of the ceiling height Left: warm brass fittings bring a sense of innate warmth to this bathroom

The apartment is grand in scale yet manages to be utterly homely and cosy. How was this achieved? When we bought it the period features had been stripped out and, in many cases, ceilings lowered. We all felt that these needed to be reinstated to give the property back its wow factor. We invested in amazing oversized decorative coving and skirting boards, which had such a transformative effect, restoring the house’s period grandeur. However, we are quite informal people and were concerned that the space would feel too austere and formal for our style of living. This is why we opted for the more openplan layout and a more contemporary approach to fixtures and fittings, which were overlaid onto the period shell. Frank & Faber encouraged us to use natural materials which have an innate warmth and natural patina to them, so we used a lot of timber and warm metallics such as brass. The parquet flooring and timber finish to the doors were used for the classic contemporary elegance but also the warmth and softness they bring. Use of layered textures were also important to bring warmth and cosiness, and we had gorgeous curtains made in linens, velvets and elegant cottons, which really bring softness and cosiness. And large rugs were used to frame and define areas and add to the warm layered palette. How would you describe your interiors style? I love mid-century Scandinavian furniture for its simplicity and practical design. But I like to mix pieces, vintage and new and different styles. My husband and I are also very much into colours, and I think the flat has a good mix of neutrals with pops of colour throughout. The choice of colours was also inspired by the architecture and natural light available, as well as ensuring there was continuity throughout the property. In the larger, openplan spaces, which have abundant light, we opted for a dominant light

AT HOME WITH

shade, whereas in the lower ground floor we used more intense, rich, darker shades, which work well with the lower ceilings and less natural light – for example, we have Farrow & Ball’s Brinjal in our bedroom and bathroom, which was accompanied by a rich ochre coloured velvet curtain to link back to the palette upstairs. I love the dark ceiling and light walls in the living room. How did that come about? Frank & Faber took on board our love of bold colour and a contemporary aesthetic but also combined it with finishes that are sympathetic to the period, style and natural light within the property. We were clear that we didn’t want anything ‘boring’ and wanted to have interesting and surprising finishes in every room – whilst at the same time making sure it all worked cohesively and wasn’t too overpowering. Because we have such generous ceiling heights and a lot of natural light on the ground floor, they suggested that we could make a feature of these by using dark and bold shades on the ceilings, which draw your eye up to them. We used Paint and Paper Library’s Kigali in the living room and Muga in the pool room, both of which are really striking. These were teamed with more neutral shades for the main wall colours with additional bolder tones introduced in the kitchen and on joinery. There is colour in all rooms, but at no point is it overpowering. frankandfaber.co.uk

Euan Williams Head of Lettings, St John’s Wood & Regent’s Park

I’ve worked in property since 2006, the vast majority of that time in lettings. It’s an environment that I thoroughly enjoy. Dynamic, fast paced and vibrant, it’s infectiously exciting when the phones go crazy (particularly on Fridays ahead of weekend move-ins) and the team works together to ensure smooth handovers. Maida Vale and St John’s Wood have lots in common: they are among central London’s best kept secrets with wonderful architecture, strong community spirits and yet all the benefits of being a short hop from the West End. The proximity of Regent’s Park, the excellent schools locally and the houses with large gardens prove a constant draw for families. Like many others, the market has pivoted from being very international to UK-based over the past 12 months, but we’ve noticed a spike in activity in recent weeks which bodes well for a busy summer ahead once travel restrictions are lifted. MEET THE LOCALS

1. Adam French, Goldschmidt & Howland

“Having worked in the area for 14 years I can tell you that the villagelike Little Venice within Maida Vale is particularly desirable for its diverse community (we have lots of European families here), the lovely canal walks, its restaurants, and its communal gardens, which really came into their own during lockdown. The neighbourhood is also well located with easy access to both Notting Hill and the West End.”

2. Ben Curtis, Winkworth

“Maida Vale’s red brick mansion flats were the first examples of Victorian apartment living and typically sell between £1 million and £1.3 million. Little Venice is famous for its white stucco apartments with access to private communal gardens, where larger apartments can sell from £2 million to £4 million. Houses along the canal are considered some of the most desirable with detached homes selling for in excess of £10 million.”

Reza Pakravan

Explorer and television producer Bordered by Paddington, Edgware Road and Harrow Road, leafy Maida Vale is an oasis. It feels like a village in the middle of London. A peaceful place with a real sense of community – I’ve always loved living here, but started to appreciate the area more when I became a father as it is super child friendly. My day starts at 5:30am, when I go for my morning training at Paddington Rec. It offers an incredible running track and a lot of sports facilities – very unique in London. You have the entire gym outdoors. I have developed a habit of training there all year round. I can even train under the bandstand when it’s raining. At 6:45 I run to the lovely Gail’s and grab a fresh baguette and coffees to have with my wife and my little boy at home. When I am not on the road, I work from my home studio, which is located in my garden shed. My days are very hectic: a mixture of producing, editing and writing. During my 10am break, I take my boy to the local playground for a quick play. Our playground is absolutely incredible, probably one of the best in London and my son loves it. At lunchtime I might pop to one of my favourites, Thai Rice or Banana Tree, to grab a takeaway. Alternatively, my favourite pub, The Elgin serves awesome lunches. I try to schedule my meetings for the afternoon, so I can spend my morning on creative work. The area offers a myriad of independent shops and we normally try to buy our groceries from them. After work, I often pop to Raoul’s Deli or the lovely Provenance Village Butcher to grab something for dinner. I buy our vegetables from Clifton Greens and wine from The Winery. Sometimes, on my way back home, I stop by Elgin Blooms and buy a bouquet of flowers for my wonderful wife. If we want to treat ourselves, we book a table at our favourite Japanese restaurant Murasaki, followed by drinks at the lovely Prince Alfred pub. Reza’s hit show, The World’s Most Dangerous Borders is now available on Amazon Prime

“Little Venice has always had a magical quality. The resplendent white stucco architecture and the Regent’s Canal create a picturesque ambience that’s more reminiscent of Venice than west London. Characteristic of both Little Venice and Maida Vale are the much coveted communal gardens, making the area a magnet for families attracted by security and a sense of community.”

Local heroes

Maida Vale & Little Venice Café Laville, W2

Locations don’t come much more idyllic than Café Laville’s. Sitting pretty on the picturesque Regent’s Canal, it offers a view to die for – alongside its delectable food and drink offering. Little wonder it’s one of Amy Odell’s favourite eateries. The estate agent from Chancellors tells us: “It is a wonderful spot to watch the boats float by whilst you tuck into delicious rustic Italian cuisine. It really is a gem within the area and with floor-to-ceiling windows, which open up in the summer months, the views are some of the best around. 453 Edgware Road, W2 (020 7706 2620; cafelaville.co.uk)

Clifton Nurseries, W9

Marc Schneiderman from Arlington Residential tells us his local hero is “an oasis of calm.” The Capital’s oldest and arguably most beautiful garden centre, Clifton offers a wealth of indoor and outdoor foliage to peruse and purchase. At its heart is a fairy tale-like glasshouse filled with exotic flowers and house plants – we could lose hours here. Beyond the potted plants, the company also offers garden design and landscaping services, meaning you can have a slice of Clifton Nurseries magic in your own verdant plot. The dream! 5A Clifton Villas, W9 (020 7289 6851; clifton.co.uk)

The Winery, W9

Choosing just one local hero is no easy task – especially in a neighbourhood so rich in pickings – especially the foodie ones. “The list is almost endless in Little Venice,” says James Westendarp from Chestertons. “Clifton Greens, La Piccola Deli, Raoul’s Deli, Provenance Village Butcher and The Hero of Maida to name a few… But David Motion at the The Winery has the most incredible selection of wines from small local producers and is always there to help with your choice, or else dazzle you with stories from when he worked in the music industry!” 4 Clifton Road, W9 (020 7286 6475; thewineryuk.com)

Say what?

Everybody who is anybody in the music industry has recorded at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios, but the venue was originally built as the Maida Vale Roller Skating Palace and Club. Europe’s largest indoor rollerskating rink, it even had an orchestra balcony. When the BBC took the building over in the 1930s, it became home to the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the World War II news operation. 67

Starting out

Leaving nursery behind and entering school is a big step in a child’s education – something Rebecca Addison, St. Anthony’s new Head of Reception, and her team know only too well

hen boys join St. Anthony’s in Hampstead at age 4, the school do their very best to ensure that the transition from nursery is as seamless as possible. They believe that the boys should be settled, confident and ready to learn from day one. Getting to know them and their families is a crucial part of this pivotal process. The transition begins by visiting the children in their nurseries to observe them operating in a setting in which they are familiar and where they feel safe. Meanwhile, parents complete a detailed questionnaire about their child, which provides the school with the information needed to ensure the best possible transition. Perhaps the most important stage in the process is the St Anthony’s Reception Tea Party, though, which happens in the Summer Term, offering an excellent opportunity for the boys to meet their new classmates and teachers, as well as giving them a chance to explore their new environment with their parents. The induction period, at the beginning of the first term at St. Anthony’s, is carefully planned to ensure that all of the boys remain happy and confident in their new school. By starting with short sessions in groups of no more than 10 boys, the Reception team are able to spend quality time getting to know each child individually, establishing routines and expectations, and generally ensuring a smooth settling in process for the new pupils. To ensure that parents feel as welcomed and reassured as possible, a curriculum information evening is held at the beginning of the school year. This is an excellent opportunity to communicate useful information, as well as answering any questions or queries. Parents are also encouraged to spend time in the classroom and St. Anthony’s ‘open door policy’ ensures that there is always an excellent line of communication between home and school. Alongside this, the stay and play sessions held each term are an excellent way for the children to show their parents the classroom and for them to spend time together in their school environment. On top of this, a weekly newsletter gives insight into the children’s learning and provides parents with any upcoming important information. Pastoral care at St. Anthony’s is at the forefront of school life. Ensuring that the transition from nursery to Reception is a positive experience results in happy and engaged students who are able to learn in an enabling environment that meets their needs and interests. FABRIC PROMOTION No two days are the same for Aarav, Arjun and their classmates in Reception, but fun is always guaranteed

PROFILE

Today at school…

For brothers Aarav and Arjun, no two days in Reception are the same, but every day is full of fun 09.00 Aarav and Arjun arrive in school bright and early! The boys know their morning routine in Rabbits class. They pop their belongings away and choose their ‘Mood Monster’ – this is a useful tool to gauge how the boys are feeling through facial expressions. Aarav chooses ‘excited’ because today is P.E, which is always a firm favourite! During morning registration, Arjun asks his teacher Rebecca if he can lead morning prayer and change the date on the calendar. The class talk through the timetable so that they know what will be happening during the day.

09.30

Top: Aarav has been writing about the lifecycle of a butterfly Bottom: Arjun plays a maths game

Straight into phonics and the boys show Rebecca lots of words featuring the sound of the week ‘ar’. Later, when reading, Aarav is eager to find words in his book containing that sound. Onto a ‘child-led learning’ session and both boys head straight to the maths area, gathering a group of friends to play ‘shops’. They pay for items using various coins of different values. Later, Arjun plays a maths game on the smart board, placing numbers in ascending order.

10.30 Back together on the carpet for maths, and a lesson on symmetry. The boys are learning about the life cycle of a caterpillar, so they use butterflies to describe lines of symmetry and Aarav shows excellent understanding when recreating the other half of a symmetrical image. During another ‘child-led learning’ session Arjun heads

to the writing table to work on his story. The focus book this week is Goldilocks and Arjun uses this as a theme to create his own take on this fairy-tale.

13.00 After a delicious and nutritious lunch, the boys enjoy some mindfulness to prepare them for an afternoon of successful learning. In ‘Understanding of the World’ this week the class are learning about the lifecycle of a butterfly and Aarav is eager to explain this process to everybody. In an adult-led focus task he produces a beautiful piece of writing explaining the changes from egg to butterfly. In P.E, the boys enjoy using the gym equipment safely and move to each station with confidence and enthusiasm.

14.00 Snack and story time end the day, giving the boys a chance to discuss and share anything that might be on their minds with the rest of the class. It has been another successful day of fun and learning in Reception! For enquiries about admission to Reception in 2021, call 020 7431 1066 (stanthonysprep.org.uk)

Stimulation and support

F

Are you looking to change your child’s school for Year 9? The “ecosystem of happiness” at Knightsbridge School will give them the emotional and academic support they need to flourish in the tricky GCSE years

rom the opening seconds of the senior school virtual tour video on the school’s website, it’s clear that the palpable buzz of Knightsbridge School extends into years 9, 10 and 11. The pupils are happy, confident embodiments of the KS Code, which provides consistent expectations of behaviour and manners. As the school’s founder and principal Magoo Giles says, “KS” stands not only for “Keep Striving” but also “Keep Smiling”. The senior school uses this whole child approach to build resilience, confidence and determination in pupils up to 16. Seniors are challenged academically: the curriculum uses artificial intelligence to create a unique learning journey for each pupil, while playing to their individual strengths. On top of the four core GCSE topics, students have 13 other options to choose from, including business studies and sociology. And thanks to the small class sizes, teachers can give each pupil focused attention tailored to their needs. Not all of Knightsbridge School’s learning is classroom-based, though. The senior school building on Elvaston Place is moments away from world-class museums and galleries. And each week, the student-driven Knowledge Society welcomes its choice of visiting speakers, from police sergeants to chess champions. Supporting the whole child also means

encouraging their strengths outside of academia. More than 60 extra-curricular clubs allow pupils to explore everything from horse riding to robotics; there’s even an annual talent show. The school’s exceptional pastoral care reflects the same holistic approach – and the link between how pupils feel and how they learn. Every pupil has a mentor to help them with their studies and social relationships. Student council meetings and house reps also give them a voice and a sense of ownership. Finally, Knightsbridge School builds the idea of “heathy body, healthy mind” into its weekly timetable for seniors. Mondays start with team building and Fridays with a 30-minute yoga session (in Hyde Park, when it’s warm enough). That’s on top of a morning fitness module and two extended sports sessions a week. This caring and stimulating environment allows pupils to try out lots of activities to find the one they love. By pushing themselves in and outside of the classroom, they also learn what their true strengths are, and how to fail well – all while feeling loved and supported. It’s no surprise that seniors leave as well-rounded individuals, ready for the challenges and opportunities of the next stage of life. THOUGHT

Brighter futures

Maida Vale School

With exams cancelled for a second year and the significant disruption caused to children’s education, parents fear that the effects of lost learning as a result of the pandemic will be long lasting. A survey by the Institute for Fiscal Studies in March revealed that some parents think that their child will never catch-up. 65 per cent of primary school parents and 68 per cent of secondary school parents are concerned that their child has lost out on learning, and among the latter, nine per cent believe their child’s education will never be able to fully recover. While the Department for Education announced a further £700m package to help pupils catch-up on lost learning, including funding for tutoring and summer schools, such intensive methods aren’t always the answer for young people who may be struggling mentally as well as academically. “We must not underestimate quite how difficult the last 12 months have been for our young people,” explains Brendan Pavey, Executive Headteacher, North Bridge House Senior Schools. Indeed, it has been unsurprising, and not unexpected, to see many of our nation’s young people struggling since the return to school. For some, it was the relatively minor initial issue of having to get used to a routine again and the new, unfamiliar safety procedures put in place. For others, there have been, and continue to be significant mental health challenges. “As parents and teachers, we need to ensure that we create a safe space for our children to express these concerns, to show them that we accept that it is normal to be stressed or anxious, and to be finding life challenging... They have shown great

What makes the school different? We genuinely focus on the individual pupil; we work hard to get to know them and what makes them tick. In turn, this means we know what they require in terms of care, support and challenge and we make sure that we deliver on that. We focus on achievement in all its facets.

strength and resilience up to this point, but they will continue to need love and support as we wait for a greater sense of normality to return and will take great comfort from knowing that it is OK to not be OK,” Brendan explains. While NBH was able to provide the hardware, software and the skillset to deliver excellent online teaching and learning over the lockdown period – with students continuing to benefit from a full timetable of lessons – Brendan acknowledges that this has not been the case for many thousands of students up and down the country. “Talk of being behind or needing to catch up will automatically make success feel unattainable, and is counter-productive,” he says. “Our responsibility as educators and parents is to ensure that students don’t feel disadvantaged or hard done by, and to help them have a positive outlook on the future. Equally, to progress their studies and feel confident in their learning and assured of their ability to achieve, students who struggled with online learning during lockdown now need to be encouraged by their schools and teachers to make the most of being back in their care and leadership,” he concludes. northbridgehouse.com

Can you tell us about the facilities? We have a wonderful Victorian school building which has been renovated and modernised in the most inspiring way. We have stunning facilities onsite including a wonderful theatre, a world class design and technology workshop, art studios and a food preparation and nutrition room to enhance our creative curriculum. Our onsite sports facilities include a MUGA and Basketball lay-up court. How would you describe the atmosphere? It is centred on a community that really does care, so there is a warmth that you will not find in many schools. Which extracurricular activities are you proud of? We are very proud of our performing arts provision, which has seen us put on a production of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, host a wonderful Christmas Carol Service with performances from our choir, and put on an Easter concert that was filmed professionally and distributed to all our parents who were not able to attend for obvious reasons. In any given week there are 35 clubs on offer, every day there are options for sport, creative arts, performing arts, academic enrichment and study time. How do you balance these with the academic side? As part of a broad and balanced curriculum, we offer four 90-minute lessons each day. This maximises learning time, ensuring that pupils have the opportunity to explore topics fully. We believe that by focusing on the process of learning in the way that we do, pupils will achieve beyond their potential and therefore attain excellent results. (020 4511 6000; maidavaleschool.com)

WHY THE SDLT FAZE OUT IS GOOD NEWS FOR LONDON FAMILIES STILL WANTING TO MOVE. In the spring budget the chancellor announced a fazed-out approach to the SDLT holiday, however with the 0% SDLT only applying to properties under £500,000 many families selling and buying in London did not benefit. Instead, they paid 5% or 10% depending on the value of their home. With the fazed-out approach the 5% of SDLT will be paid on properties over £250,000 from 1st July, meaning the current status-quo remains, offering London families more time to purchase.

FROM 1ST JULY 2021 UNTIL 30TH SEPTEMBER You’ll pay 5% on a purchase from £250,000 to £925,000, therefore for example if you buy a new home for £900,000, you’ll pay 5% on £650,000. Over £925,000 to £1,500,000 you’ll pay 10%. The reminder (over £1,500,000) you’ll pay 12% on. Your home, your life Receive a conveyancing quote from our 72 St. John’s Wood team - www.attwells.com

ASK THE AGENT

James Diaper

Q. Are people currently paying a premium for homes with outside space?

Savills Years in the business? 15 years. I love London because of… the diversity of its people, each with a different story to tell. I also like being in close proximity to the latest trends – whether that’s clothes, music or new restaurants. First London home? An apartment in the Barbican. Period property or new-build? Period property every time.

Alien’s attack, which London spot would you save? It has to be Hampstead Heath.

It’s really interesting to explore the tow paths. During lockdown I found some incredible spots in the area.

Favourite place to grab a coffee? Ginger & White, which happens to be right next to the office.

What’s your hidden talent? I’m very handy with a spanner and screwdriver – in another life I might have been a car mechanic!

Where do you go for head space in the city? I live in east London, so I spend a lot of time on my bike riding around the canals of the Olympic Park, Limehouse and Victoria Park.

Your home, your life

A: Definitely! We’ve seen individuals cashing in prime zone one flats in search of properties in NW6 and NW3 postcodes with outside space. Subsequently, demand is up 17 per cent since the beginning of March. Families seeking to put down roots are joined by Hong Kong buyers who have Hampstead in their sights due to the recent BNO visa scheme. This year, the warmer months coincide with pent-up demand and the easing of restrictions. With many vendors postponing holidays, the next six months provide the perfect opportunity to achieve the optimum selling price.

which, I’m sure we’d end up out in Soho! Creature comfort? My espresso machine – for those time when I can’t get my caffeine fix at Ginger & White.
