F ROM THE EDITOR

With love from all of us

Liz Skone James, Editor

What comes to mind when you think of February? That long-awaited drink after a month of self-imposed restrictions? The hearts and flowers of Valentine’s Day? The catwalk glamour of London Fashion Week? Or the welcome (or maybe not) family time that half term brings? Whatever your focus this February, there’s lots to love in this issue, starting with our cover interview with Eddie Marsan, whose attitude to fame and fortune is refreshingly down-to-earth. Not quite so grounded, but no less appealing, some seriously flamboyant lighting design is illuminating the last of winter’s dark days. On the subject of standout design, the Bauhaus is celebrating its centenary this year and we’ve, once again, fallen head over heels for its colourful modernist style. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to lovely stuff. Enjoy!

EXHIBITION

Nicole Farhi: Folds

Until 2 Mar | Beaux Arts In a new series, the famed French sculptor and fashion designer presents a unique celebration of the female form, drawing attention to the shapes and curves created by folds of human flesh. Farhi asked two friends to sit for the portraits, Paola Barone and Sue Tilley, a former muse of Lucian Freud. She brings abstraction to Mother Nature with each piece focusing on specific sections of the figures: voluptuous body bits are cast in plaster before the life-size models are finished in Jesmonite and bronze. “The human form and the emotions it elicits has been an enduring theme in my sculptural work,” says Farhi. Whether clothed or unclothed, her creations continue to inspire. 48 Maddox Street, W1S (020 7493 1155; beauxartslondon.uk)

9 Feb to 18 May | Barbican Centre The Barbican has announced a series of workshops, tours and courses exploring architecture’s most divisive movement and its enduring influence on craft. Throughout the season, visitors to the Barbican Shop can expect a multi-disciplinary programme of events: designer-maker Phil Cuttance heads up a vase casting workshop, while Jamie Temple examines Brutalism through lino printing. Photography exhibitions and architectural walking tours are on offer, plus, excitingly, the Barbican’s very first book club launches, discussing the brutal worlds of JG Ballard. MUSICAL

Only Fools and Horses

From 9 Feb Theatre Royal Haymarket As Peckham’s finest wheelers and dealers head “up west” we’re confident they’re in safe hands, given this is comedy powerhouse Paul Whitehouse’s latest offering. Further adding to the musical’s credibility, the Fast Show star has teamed up with Jim Sullivan, son of John Sullivan (who penned the original TV show) to come up with a new script and original score. Whitehouse takes centre stage as Grandad, with Tom Bennett as the wise-cracking Del Boy and Ryan Hutton as the hapless Rodney. Purists can rest assured: you can take the boys out of Peckham but you can’t take Peckham out of the boys. 18 Suffolk Street, SW1Y (onlyfoolsmusical.com) 38

THEATRE

All About Eve From 2 Feb | Noël Coward Theatre

February brings one of the Capital’s most anticipated openings: starring Gillian Anderson and Lily James, the stage adaptation of the 1950 Oscar-winning film now sees Olivier and Tony award-winning Ivo van Hove in the director’s seat. All About Eve promises a razorsharp expose of showbusiness’ obsession with youth and celebrity as it lifts the curtain on a world of jealousy and ambition. Not to be missed. 85-88 St. Martin’s Lane, WC2N (allabouteveplay.com)

EXHIBITION

Ulay Until 23 Feb | Richard Saltoun Gallery

Ulay is an artist whose haunting photography style will stay with you beyond the exhibition. Born Frank Uwe Laysiepen, the German photographer is, to many, unclassifiable. His early works in Polaroid focus on selfdiscovery, with hundreds of self-portraits manipulated in myriad ways. After exhausting his search of the self, Ulay embraced a photographic approach in which he identified with those deemed outside of mainstream society. In this, his first solo exhibition at Richard Saltoun, we’ll see that creative trajectory. 41 Dover Street, W1S (020 7637 1225; richardsaltoun.com)

BOOK

Le Corbusier Le Grand by Jean-Louis Cohen

Published in paperback 20 Feb You don’t have to be an authority on modern architecture to know the work of Le Corbusier. In fact, here in London, you’d be hard pushed to avoid it, such is the French-Swiss innovator’s influence. Yet this paperback draws on rarely seen archival material, including sketches, photos and correspondences, to give us a glimpse into the peripheries of the great man’s life – the people and events that shaped him – as well as his vast and varied artistic output. Cohen’s reputation as France’s most respected historian of 20th century architecture and urbanism cements him, too, as a leading light. Your modernist coffee table will thank you for it.

The popular Nature Explorers programme starts again on 19 February. Drop your young explorer off in Hyde Park where they will spend the day learning wilderness skills with other like-minded children. The session is run by a fully trained and DBS checked forest school leader. Alternatively, Discovery Days are back on 20 and 21 February from 11am-3pm, and they’re totally free. Take the entire family down to The LookOut Discovery Centre in Hyde Park to learn more about the birds of The Royal Parks. With food becoming scarce towards the end of winter, you can give the birds a helping hand through a host of activities, including making a bird feeder and bird watching in the parks. To find out more, visit royalparks.org.uk/whatson/upcoming-events The Royal Parks is the charity that cares for 5,000 acres of glorious Royal parkland and 500 years of history in the heart of our capital city. Every year 77 million visitors enjoy eight of London’s largest open spaces, including Hyde Park, The Green Park, Richmond Park, Greenwich Park, St. James’s Park, Bushy Park, The Regent’s Park and Kensington Gardens. INTERVIEW

Getting political Eddie Marsan speaks out on encouraging diversity in the arts, mastering the science of acting and achieving the extraordinary at work, plus his latest role in Vice by Liz Skone James

They don’t come more London than actor Eddie Marsan, who was born and grew up in Stepney within the sound of the Bow Bells. “I grew up in a very, very diverse area of London,” he tells me. He believes that it was those formative years in the East End that led him to a career in acting. “On the surface level I was born within the white working class. And I think that a lot of the culture of the white working class is a kind of stoicism and a generosity, and perseverance. But there is another side of it that is a celebration of ignorance and bigotry. I rejected that orthodox way of working from an early age. And I think that once you reject one kind of orthodoxy, it inspires in you a curiosity and an open mindedness. And I think that acting was a manifestation of that,” he explains. Though he has gone on to become a major star – in a career spanning almost 30 years he has amassed more than 100 film and television credits, including a memorable and award-winning performance as the driving instructor in Mike Leigh’s Happy-Go-Lucky, and the recurring role of Terry in Showtime’s Ray Donovan – he doesn’t believe that he has any

intrinsic talent for what he does. “I consider myself to be hard working, and I have mastered a technique that somebody else has taught me,” he says, adding: “I am a practitioner… It has enabled me to achieve a certain amount of success.” Eddie studied drama at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts under the renowned Russian director and acting teacher Sam Kogan (who went on to launch the Kogan Academy of Dramatic Arts, formerly The School of the Science of Acting, and is famous for his technique which applies neuroscience and psychology to the role of acting). Eddie still uses the techniques Kogan taught him to get into his characters’ heads: “Basically I try to create the prejudicial mindset of the character, to understand what people’s purposes are. What they think will make them happy – all human beings have that, that search for happiness,” he explains. While Kogan was influential on a professional level, Eddie tells me that none of this would have been possible without the help of a man called Leslie Bennett. “He became a kind of father figure to me. He paid for me to go to drama school and

he became a mentor to me. He was just a working class Bethnal Green boy who was very intelligent and went to grammar school and became really successful, and he spurred me on and encouraged me to go beyond my self-imposed boundaries.” Eddie is extremely grateful to have been given a foot in the door. Something he believes is not readily available to a lot of young people growing up in working class families. It is something he feels strongly about. “The way that it affects the industry is that the creative point of reference is from a very, very small circle of people,” he tells me, animatedly. “What is happening is that if you only get people from a more privileged background having access to a career in the arts, then even if their intentions are good, and their intentions are progressive and they are trying to address inequalities, it comes from an inaccurate perspective.” So what does he think can be done to redress the balance? “I think you have to put money into it. You have to create bursaries at drama schools. You have to give local councils money to create opportunities. You need a certain amount of redistribution of wealth to

encourage a meritocracy. You don’t get a meritocracy naturally… I hope this will happen. I’m not sure if it will. I’m not a politician; I am interested in politics, but I am not a politician,” he shrugs. With an interest in politics, his latest role – that of Paul Wolfowitz in Vice, Adam McKay’s controversial biopic of former Vice President Dick Cheney – comes as no surprise. Eddie tells me it was an irresistible role and a very creative project to be involved in. “I’m fascinated by politics; particularly interested in American politics. I also thought that The Big Short [McKay’s 2015 film about the build-up to the housing bubble in the United States] was an amazing film, in that it described a very complex situation in a very simple, accessible way. And I think Vice does the same. I think Adam is a bit of a genius in the way he does that,” he explains enthusiastically. Adding: “I thought it was just a brilliant script. And also I thought that to play Paul Wolfowitz would be fascinating. We demonise him as being a neocon, but he sees himself as a Truman Democrat, which I thought was fascinating. Maybe other people find this stuff boring, but for me it was the perfect role,” he grins. In preparation for the part, Eddie spent hours researching and spoke to various experts. This is, he says, one of the ways that acting has empowered him. “I never went to university, so this has been my university for 27 years. You have to study concepts, and philosophies and ideas that are always, to a certain extent, alien to you. You have to understand other people’s perspectives, and quite often you have to understand historical perspectives too.” Next up is a role in Feedback, a film by Spanish director Pedro Alonso about a radio host whose studio is hijacked by armed gunman. Set in present day London, it did not require as much contextual research, but was no less fascinating for Eddie. “I love films that are made by foreign directors about London, because they allow you to explore their perspective of London, which is fascinating. You know, giving a fresh perspective. It’s a really good film.” It is clear that there are no half measures for Eddie when it comes to work. Given that he seems to be constantly working, I wonder how he manages to balance life and work. “I’m just busy all the time. I can’t work, and have a social life and have a family – something has to give, so I gave up the social life really,” he tells me. “I work hard and I keep my head down and I get on with it. I very rarely go out. I come home and I am with my family.” It is in keeping with a piece of advice given to him many years ago by Sam Kogan. “He told me to strive to have an ordinary life and an extraordinary career. Don’t do it the other way around. Don’t try and be a celebrity. Be normal and have a really amazing career. Best advice anybody ever gave me.” It has served him well.

Alarmed by the passing of time, under pressure from the New Year, New You brigade and suffering from a hefty dose of winter-skin-itis, I decide that decisive action is needed and head to the Adonia Clinic in Maida Vale, where the talented Dr Ejikeme offers prescriptive skin-care routines as well as cosmetic treatments. Warm, welcoming and, of course, with a perfect, unblemished complexion, she immediately puts me at ease. We discuss not just skin, but what lies beneath, and how our heritage plays a huge role in how we age. Fortunately – for my skin – my family more often spent holidays on the Lancashire moors than soaking up the sun on Caribbean beaches, so windburn was a greater concern than sun damage. We discuss how to treat my melasma (hyperpigmentation) and how dermal fillers might help to lift my face. But today the prescription is a bespoke medical facial. The treatment starts with a thorough cleanse using a peptic glycolic foaming cleanser, which is reportedly excellent for pigmentation. This is followed by a hydration cleanse – a very gentle extraction process where water is gently hosed onto the skin in order to dislodge dirt and dead skin cells, which are then sucked out. After a spot of microdermabrasion, I’m left to chill under my own personal disco helmet (aka LED mask) for some light therapy. Finally, serums are applied and 70 per cent oxygen is used to gently push them deep into the base layers of the skin. A generous application of factor 50 sunscreen is the last step, which, I’m schooled by Dr Ejikeme, we should all be wearing every day, even in winter. My face is clean as a whistle and everything looks lifted. Better yet I feel more knowledgeable about why I have the skin that I have, and I know what I can do to improve, heal It goes without saying that and protect it going forward. the talented Dr Ejikeme Dr Ejikeme is so likeable has a covetable complexion and approachable that she could probably have told me I needed an entire face-swap and I’d have gone along with it, but she’s far too kind for that, and besides, who needs invasive treatments when her facials are so good. Which isn’t to say I won’t be back for some of those fillers one day, you understand… BP From £360. 474 Harrow Road,

We love: Gee Woods

Don’t miss…

In a world where most things are mass produced, London based jewellery designer and gemologist Gee Woods likes to offer something a bit different. Until now, she has worked largely on bespoke commissions – with a special interest in reworking old, often neglected pieces of jewellery – but this year sees her launch a new capsule collection of ready-to-wear engagement rings. Designed for women who want to be distinctively different, the rings feature gorgeous stones sourced from around the world. Aptly named after nymphs, goddesses and resilient women from ancient Greek mythology – all known for their exaggerated and divergent personalities – each design has been created with a different character in mind. Prepare to be dazzled. From £1,350, for more details, see geewoods.com

We honestly couldn’t be more excited to bring you news of this pop-up… Londoner Cora Hilts set up online store Rêve En Vert back in 2014, in the belief that we shouldn’t sacrifice style for ethics. A conscious collection of the very best sustainable brands in fashion, beauty and homewares, all known for rejecting animal cruelty, child labour, poor working conditions and anything that damages the environment, the site quickly became a go-to destination for honest design. And now the luxury online e-tailer has opened its first HONEST SPACE concept store at the SMUK London studio in Belgravia. The space is decorated with Frances Loom’s exquisite vintage rugs, with one-of-akind Alexander Coe artworks, crafted from recycled paper, adorning the walls – all of which will go on sale at the end of the pop-up, in keeping with REV’s waste-free and upcycling philosophy. A new capsule collection is being revealed every fortnight, with February’s focus being lingerie and silks. Get there before it’s gone… The pop-up will be open until 13 March. Pucci Mayfair Once upon a time there was Pucci Chelsea – an upscale pizza joint made famous in the 1970s when its crispy bases and thrilling flavours attracted showbiz funsters such as Rod Stewart and Bryan Ferry. It was buzzing with the kind of musicians, aristos and actors who loved life, laughter and Italian tucker, as well as being waited on by the likes of Sophie Dahl. But Chelsea isn’t the buzzy booze den it used to be. Mayfair – once so quiet you could hear a golden hat pin drop – is now where it’s at. Enter Pucci Mayfair in Maddox Street. This is a world-class pizza place with added sharing plates (the pizzas are meant to be the side show to those small dishes of Mediterranean gorgeousness, but they refuse to be overshadowed). We nibbled on Barbari bread made with sesame and onion seed, before devouring croquettes with Parmesan and prosciutto – suitably crisp on the outside, pleasingly warm and soft inside. And as a nod to our five a day, a slider of Padrón peppers with smoked salt and Urfa biber. But then came the main event, possibly the tastiest pizza I’ve ever eaten (with ’nduja, burrata and honey) alongside perfect calamari (because why not) and succulent courgette fritti with sage and pickled red chilli. Slightly kicking myself that I didn’t also try the glazed Barbary duck breast with pomegranate. For pudding, we shared a cloud of peach pavlova – something about this place nudges you into behaviours you thought you’d grown out of. Ex-Noma and Gordon Ramsay Group chef Tilly Turbett is in the kitchen, exploring Lebanese, Italian and Turkish ideas. Owner Rufus Albanese (son of the esteemed Giuseppe ‘Pucci’ Albanese himself) roams the floor with charisma that is clearly genetic – welcoming whispering couples, jolly families, highspirited groups, and explaining the menu with great patience and passion (the downside of sharing plates: they do always need explaining to someone). No celebs there yet tonight as far as I could see under the soft pendant lighting, or behind the botanical extravaganzas and exposed brick, but at Pucci Mayfair, we can all feel like rock stars. LC 39 Maddox Street, W1S (020 3887 4363; puccimayfair.com)

Psst… January is traditionally the time for resolutions, but news of a brilliant app has had us adding a little footnote to our list this February: a promise to do everything in our power to help prevent food waste. Karma allows Londoners to buy high-quality food directly from local restaurants, cafés, delis, grocers and other independent food retailers: meals and ingredients which would otherwise be thrown away at the end of the day’s trading. There are already over 400 businesses signed up, including the likes of Michelin-starred Aquavit and deli and diet delivery service Detox Kitchen, with

users enjoying foodie treats such as sushi, pizza, organic charcuterie and artisan cheeses. In a government report published at the end of last year, it was noted that although 43,000 tonnes of surplus food produced by retailers and manufacturers is redistributed, a further 100,000 tonnes (equivalent to 250 million meals a year) is still going to waste. Consider Karma a tiny step towards reducing that terrifyingly big figure. For more details, and to download the app, see karma.life fabricmagazine.co.uk

Dry January over; we’re raising a toast to Fizz February (ok, we made that one up, but you’ve probably gathered we need little excuse to crack open the bubbles). We’ll be drinking this month at north west London’s newest pub, the William IV, which has just reopened following extensive refurbishment. Set on the junction of Warfield Road and Harrow Road, the historic pub first opened in 1837, when William IV was on the throne, and the latest incarnation incorporates many of the original features from that time – think wood burning fireplaces, arched doorways, stained-glass windows and a striking white marble bar. Offering an all day menu of well-executed British food and locally produced beers across its four spaces (the main bar, dining room, private room and back bar), the pub also boasts 15 gorgeous guest bedrooms, while a spacious garden and summerhouse will come into their own later in the year. All of which add up to make it the perfect location not just for dinner and drinks, but also for events and parties. Welcome to the neighbourhood, your majesty. 786 Harrow Road, NW10 (020 8969 5955; williamiv.london)

Chef proprietor, Xier

When I was a child I wanted to be… a chef! I always wanted to travel and cooking has allowed me to do that. The first thing I cooked was… scrambled egg. I was actually trying to cook a fried egg, but it spoiled and I improvised. My kitchen heroes are… Angela Hartnett. She is fair, amazingly skilled and taught me so much about how to run a business and a kitchen. Also, Pierre Gagnaire. I have all his books. He started as a commis chef at the age of 24 – late for a chef – worked his way up and is now three-starred. He is proof that if you work hard, you can achieve anything.

The gorgeous Gatsby inspired bar where king of cocktails Ryan Chetiyawardana will be mixing up his latest creations

Join their club With a menu designed by Michelin starred chef Tom Sellers, show stopping décor by the internationally renowned artist Bradley Theodore and celebrity florist Nikki Tibbles, and a sleek Gatsbyesque basement bar with cocktails created by award-winning mixologist Ryan Chetiyawardana, it goes without saying that private members’ club The Court, launching this month, is going to be pretty spectacular. And, being located on Kingly Street, on the former site of Bag O’Nails – where Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and The Who were all once 52

fabricmagazine.co.uk

regulars, both on and off stage – The Court is keen to keep this rich musical heritage alive, with a piano stage and nightly live entertainment planned. Founder and entrepreneur Harry Mead hopes that by harnessing what made the iconic clubs of the past so special and giving it a modern twist, The Court will offer something truly unique to Londoners. We think it looks set to become one of the Capital’s most soughtafter luxury private members’ clubs. Annual membership from £600 per year. 9 Kingly Street, W1B (thecourt.co.uk)

My fail-safe dinner party menu is… obviously very different to what I would cook at Xier. I would do salmon carpaccio as a starter, followed by truffle risotto with artichoke crisps, and finish with vanilla cheesecake and strawberry sorbet. My last meal on earth would be… beef fillet with smoked pomme purée, honey glazed carrots and an asparagus gratin with cheese on top, served with a nice bottle of Masseto 1998 on the side. When I feel down I make… fresh pasta. It relaxes me. Everything from to tortellini to tagliolini. My favourite London restaurant is… The Clove Club (after Xier, of course). It consistently delivers excellence without stuffiness. Xier opens this month. 13-14 Thayer Street, W1U (xierlondon.com)

TRAVEL NEWS

Travel news Fall for Istanbul

The art of doing nothing If your mind is on romantic escapes, look no further than the Caribbean’s newest luxury hotel, from award-winning Scottish company Inverlochy Castle Management International (ICMI). Having opened late last year, The Liming, set on blissful Bequia, has now had a few months to find its feet, and early reviews are glowing. To Caribbean locals liming means ‘doing nothing’, and this boutique resort has been shaped by the philosophy that doing nothing is an art form. Norbert Lieder, managing director of ICMI says: “As soon as you arrive on Bequia you get the sense that life is a little different. We wanted to design a concept that embodies

this, something that offers guests the chance to enter the Bequia state of mind.” Set up to channel pure escapism, the resort comprises 13 spacious villas, each boasting a private infinity pool or hot tub, and all perfectly positioned to soak up the stunning views towards Canouan and Mayreau. The ultimate escape from everyday life, the only decisions you’ll be expected to make here are whether to lounge poolside or head to the beach, and which delicious dish to choose from award-winning chef Mustakeen Sultan’s tantalising menu of locally-sourced delights. It’s a little slice of heaven. For more information, visit thelimingbequia.com

Forget Paris, for romance you can’t beat Istanbul, says Serkan Serpen, senior concierge at The Ritz-Carlton, Istanbul “We are in the perfect spot for a romantic break: close to the Old City, which is home to the 1,500-year-old Hagia Sophia, the Topkapi Palace, the largest historical covered Grand Bazaar, countless museums as well as modern art galleries, antique shops and so much more… Wherever you look you will come across a love story, whether a historical building or an art exhibition. Here are my top tips for lovers: Mimar Sinan, one of the great architects of the Ottoman Empire, once fell in love with Mihrimah, daughter of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. La Isla Bonita A cluster of private villas on Zakynthos’ lovely Vassilikos peninsula achieve the seemingly impossible balance of a family friendly holiday that is a genuine treat for adults too BY KATI E H U TL E Y

akynthos, in the Ionian islands, is more widely known to Brits by its Italian nom de plume, Zante, and was once considered something of a party Mecca. We, on the other hand, are a family with a toddler, so the only bottles we’ll be interested in downing will be milk, (perhaps with the occasional Calpol chaser). Thankfully, the beauty of travelling with a tour operator you trust means you can expect a certain quality as standard. Simpson Travel winning Best Villa Operator 2018 at the Telegraph Travel Awards will come as little surprise to anyone who has holidayed with them, so we knew that we were putting our precious family holiday in safe hands. If that holiday moment when you touch down on foreign soil is always just a little a bit magical, for me, when that touch

down is onto Greek island soil, the magic is multiplied. But still, there was something niggling me…namely, just how could a holiday that has to cater to the needs of an under two-year-old really compare to holidays of yore, when days were lazy, evenings were long, and exploring the island didn’t require at least half an hour of loading the car followed by “I thought you’d packed the arm bands” and turning back round again? We set off accordingly for Periyali Villas, on the Vassilikos peninsula on the south of the island: included in the cost of your charming two or three bedroomed villa, complete with plunge pool and gated garden, is first class childcare for your little darling(s), with British certified nannies and all the fun and games they could wish for – leaving you free to holiday just like ‘the good old days’. With our daughter being so young, we

decided to only make use of the service a couple of times during the week, but boy was it worth it. Day one and we set off on the winding roads to see where the spirit of adventure would carry us – and this was great exploring country. The Vassilikos peninsula is stunning, with endless stretches of sandy beaches giving way to hills blanketed with olive and cypress trees; we found ourselves on what felt like the top of the world, the view stretching infinitely with just the hum of cicadas and the buzz of bumblebees – attracted by the wild mountain flowers – for company. A somewhat perilous descent to Dafni beach carried the ultimate reward, of the sort of meal that Greece does best: simple, home cooked, abundant. Next time, we headed for civilisation: into Zakynthos itself, the island’s capital and a

town of infinite charm. It was market day, and the plan was simply to buy provisions for a home cooked feast that evening, but the inevitable sampling of wares at cafés, the pull of some tourist shopping and the picturesque warren of back streets in the old town meant we were spoilt for things to do, struggling to fit everything in to our morning of freedom. And so our week rolled gently by; days relaxing at Gerakas beach, a conservation site renowned for its turtle hatching, or splashing about in our plunge pool, evenings spent lazily collecting freshly prepared food from our favourite tavernas in a blissful state of peace and quiet. There is a real art to achieving the balance of a family friendly holiday that is a genuine treat for adults too, and we were lucky enough to find it here at Periyali. It won’t be our last visit. fabricmagazine.co.uk

The light fantastic Boundlessly innovative, lighting design brings form and function together with dazzling results. From bejewelled pendants to the stark lines of a sculptural centrepiece, the art and science of illumination continues to spark awe by Ali Howard

WEEPING WONDER Blurring the lines between art and interiors, Portuguese brand InsidherLand presented eight new designs at last month’s MAISON&OBJET, taking visitors through a gallery set up that showed the new releases in their best possible light. One of those featured was the Azores wall lamp (above), an intricate and sculptural affair handcrafted in polished brass with a gold finish. Designer Joana Santos Barbosa took inspiration from a trip to São Miguel and the lush vegetation she found there. The lamp recreates a piece of weeping willow found near a lagoon, its artificial light beautifully mimicking the sunlight piercing through the leaves. From €2,100 (insidherland.com)

FANCIFUL FEATHERS New to The French Bedroom Company is the Glorious Gloria pendant (right), a flamboyant hanging light. Designed by one Lottie Davies whose background in European theatre is evidenced in her fanciful designs: the Gloria could be straight out of the Folies Bergère, such is its attitude and aesthetic. Davies spent two years refining her craft, experimenting with materials of contrasting textures before her feathered pendants emerged. Here, she juxtaposes a garland of soft goose feathers with the rigid structure of a gold powder-coated brass frame. Gilded interlocking ball chain hangs below the bulb while the light is finished with gold lurex trimming. £565 (frenchbedroomcompany.co.uk) LAYERED LIGHT Sometimes we find the best inspiration looking back. One re-release that demands fresh recognition is Poul Henningsen’s iconic PH Artichoke (bottom). Marking the 125th anniversary of Henningsen’s birth, Danish lighting giants Louis Poulsen have re-issued the pendant in the same copper construction and rose finish as the 1958 original. Featuring 72 precisely positioned leaves with 12 unique rows of six leaves each, the light emits a softly diffused glow, bringing a distinct midcentury warmth to an otherwise highly structured and industrial piece. That the design has been reimagined and reproduced the world over only adds to its 2019 relevance and appeal. From £7,290 (louispoulsen.com)

STRUCTURED SHIMMER Also new from Louis Poulsen is Øivind Slaatto’s ethereal Patera pendant (below), now in silver. Originally launched back in 2015 in white as a contemporary take on the chandelier, this update takes on board a renewed appetite for rich metallics and shimmering house jewels. It is a bold and decisive move away from minimalism. Multifaceted, the light’s reflective profile is eye-catching enough unlit, but flick the switch and its Fibonacci sequence-based structure really shines, creating a mesmerising orb of light. In fact, its 360-degree glarefree illumination is all down to Slaatto’s painstaking planning with geometrics. Who knew mathematics could be so beautiful? From £710 (louispoulsen.com) FLOATING FIERCE Even the most abstract lighting design can take its cue from the natural world. Inspired by the long flat bill of a swordfish, the new Spada pendant from familyrun Viennese brand Kolarz offers a gallery-worthy installation of suspended light, especially when grouped together to create intercrossing lines. Stark and contemporary, these javelin-like spears seemingly float from the ceiling despite their robust form. They contain a recessed strip of LEDs, which give off a warm white light. Indeed, Spada’s clever interplay of lightness and strength elevates the design above and beyond illumination to sculpture. Isn’t it time we reconsidered strip lighting? From £1,560 (kolarz.at)

Andrea Livingstone Restoring a semi-derelict Grade II listed Georgian townhouse to its former glory was a labour of love for art historian Andrea Livingstone by Karen Heaney

62

fabricmagazine.co.uk

What drew you to Marylebone? I lived in Oxfordshire but all my children had left home and were London-based. After 30 years being in the countryside I wanted to enjoy the convenience of city living, being closer to galleries, the theatre and, of course, to my children and grandchildren. What appealed to you about this property in particular? It was a fabulous and rare opportunity to restore a Georgian London square townhouse back to a family home. The property was also appealing because it still retained its mews to the rear. As well as providing off-street parking, the mews flat above the garage is incredibly useful and offers a lot of flexibility. I could see the potential in the house – the proportions were generous, and much of the original

fabric of the 1820 house was still intact. It had survived remarkably unscathed. It was bright, south facing, spacious and looked onto a mature garden square, with private residents’ garden within. What state was the house in when you bought it? It was in a sorry condition – it had been occupied by squatters for a number of years. The structural timbers were damaged so the floors slumped precariously in the middle of the house. The ground floor had been used as an office space, and the second and third floors had been turned into separate flats. Many of the original features had been covered up: most of the shutters had been painted over; the fireplaces had been blocked up; and the cantilevered limestone staircase had been covered in white gloss paint. Much of the original woodwork

AT H O M E W I T H had been ripped out and numerous sash windows replaced with late twentieth century metal frames. Did you have a clear vision of what you wanted to create? Not as such, but I knew that with the right help the house had the potential to become very special. The architects, McLaren.Excell, were very clear in their approach; identifying areas to be restored and where we could add contemporary elements that would be in keeping with the original fabric of the building. They did a whole series of layouts, eventually we settled on a scheme where the kitchen was moved to the ground floor next to the dining room. We re-instated the original floor plan on the top two floors, which gave us four bedrooms and three bathrooms. And the landing and corridors were opened up, giving more light and

space. They had the great idea of removing all the low, flat ceilings from the top floor rooms, and opening them up into the pitched roof, giving space for two more bathrooms and an artist’s studio. How was the work approached? First, we had to secure Listed Building Consent. McLaren.Excell had to provide a comprehensive restoration programme that detailed how they planned to repair and/or replace important historic features. The first step was to see what remained of the original features – and there were some real surprises. When they removed the paintwork from the window reveals they found a nearcomplete set of original, functioning shutters and when they uncovered the cantilevered staircase they discovered a beautifully preserved limestone structure.

63

AT H O M E W I T H To repair areas of woodwork, they copied sections of surviving joinery and replicated their exact profiles; they opened up three fireplaces and re-instated chimneypieces that were in keeping with the period of the house. They took impressions of the original cornice sections and reproduced them in plaster to restore the collapsed ceilings; and all original pine floorboards were pulled up, sanded down and re-laid. The plain glass fanlight was replaced with an exact reproduction of the original. And the natural finishes of many surviving elements were left exposed to showcase the beauty of the materials. How did you integrate the contemporary elements? With all the restoration work agreed, we could start thinking about the contemporary elements. I wanted these to contrast with

the period detail, while being sympathetic to their context. So we settled on a soft palette of materials that would work in such refined surroundings: Italian limestone, Welsh slate, cast concrete, African wenge and weathered zinc – all natural materials which, in time, will age beautifully like the house. How long did the project take from start to finish? About two years all told. It was very much a collaborative process and I loved working with them. What were the pleasant surprises/main challenges along the way? The pleasant surprises were unearthing more and more old fabric and discovering the beauty of the original Georgian proportions. The challenge was doing all this work on a reasonable budget!

We had the right team of artisans, suppliers and specialist fabricators, so we were able to achieve so much without the budget spiralling out of control. What do you most enjoy about living here? Which is your favourite room, and why? My favourite room is the new kitchen that looks over the square. We spend most of our time in there, and with its cantilevered island and versatile layout it has served us well. The first floor living room is also very special – it’s arranged laterally across the house and is a huge space with wonderfully high ceilings. Three tall French doors open out onto the garden square and light fills the room in a way that’s rare in the centre of London. Any tips you’d like to share about taking on a project of

this scale? What do you wish you’d known before you embarked upon it? I had been lucky enough to do a few restorations before and I knew the value in employing an architect that would go above and beyond the normal expectation. They designed all the internal spaces, kitchens, bathrooms, joinery, lighting etc. and were passionate about their design approach and the material qualities they introduced. This was always going to be key in making a project like this a success. The cost of building is always more than you anticipate, and I would advise anyone taking on a project to have this understood and agreed before they embark on the work. No matter how well things are planned, there will always be surprises along the way – far better to factor this in from the start. (mclarenexcell.com)

Area guide Bayswater With its zone one location close to Hyde Park and some of the Capital’s finest stucco garden squares and classical terraces, it’s something of a mystery why Bayswater has been overshadowed by neighbouring Notting Hill for quite so long, but change is afoot. With a number of ground-breaking new residential development schemes, a £1 billion retail overhaul centred on the famous and listed Whiteleys department store, and the promise of Crossrail on the way, Bayswater’s future certainly looks brighter. In terms of property, though there are some wonderful mews houses and five- and sixbedroom family houses in and around Connaught Square, flats dominate the market here: many of the stucco buildings have been converted into luxury apartments, while the Hallfield Estate – a large postwar council estate designed by the architect Berthold Lubetkin – is popular with fans of the mid-century style Photography by Kathy Anne Lim

Lucy Choi Shoe designer “It’s certainly never boring working in Bayswater, but for the real hidden gems I would suggest heading over to Connaught Village, Hyde Park’s luxury retail quarter. It’s full of small, independent boutiques where you can find exquisite and one-of-a-kind pieces, as well as art and gourmet food. I love fashion boutique Kokoro, where everything is exclusively created and customised. The Place, which was set up by former chief executive of Browns, Simon Burstein, to showcase rising British star Alice Archer, is a great place to find birthday presents for men. There’s also an incredible Argentine steak house called Casa Malevo. I can’t recommend it highly enough: the figs with goat’s cheese and honey are to die for. And of course, popping into Lucy Choi London is a must!” 18 Connaught Street, W2 (020 7402 3434; lucychoilondon.com)

Did you know? Historical records trace Bayswater brewhouse The Swan back to 1721, when it first appeared on the licensed victualler’s register, but it is widely believed to have been an inn for much longer. It is thought to have been the final drinking place for the victims of the gallows at Tyburn (close to the current location of Marble Arch), including notorious highwayman Claude Duval, who was 68

hanged in 1670. It has even been suggested that this tradition is behind the coining of some familiar phrases – the local jailer would draw up with the prisoner’s cage outside and request a final beer for the prisoner, saying, “One for the road,” and after the horses had pulled away, patrons at the bar would say, “He’s on the wagon,” alluding to the fact that the prisoner would never drink again.

From the agents... “Bayswater has been somewhat overshadowed by Notting Hill and Hyde Park. But perceptions have changed over the last five years and wealthy buyers from both the UK and overseas now reside here, choosing the area’s beautiful garden squares and terraces in particular.” Dylan James, Chestertons “The first major superprime development here was The Lancasters, which was completed in 2011 and gave the market confidence in the underlying credentials of the area north of Hyde Park. The £1 billion regeneration of Whiteleys will give the area the luxury retail destination it’s been lacking. It offers attractive investment opportunities, in terms of capital appreciation and rental yields, with the Paddington Basin regeneration and Crossrail set to drive this even further.” Marcus O’Brien, Beauchamp Estates

Local heroes PORCHESTER HALL, W2 This glorious Grade II listed building is one of the Capital’s lesser known architectural gems. Built in the mid-1920s, it epitomises Art Deco elegance with its ornate cornicing, grand wood panelling and beautiful marbled stairwell – little wonder it offers the perfect city wedding venue. But for Di Gong at Benham and Reeves Residential Lettings, Porchester Hall’s versatility is its main draw: “They host an array of stunning events, and the Hall is used for filming TV shows and putting on concerts, too,” he says. 45 Porchester Road, W2 (020 7313 3850) LE SUPERMARCHE, W2 Bayswater’s Francophiles might be well positioned to jump on the Eurostar to get their Parisian kicks, but there’s a slice of French living much closer to home, too. But we’d highly recommend you experience Le Supermarche vis-à-vis to get a true taste, as would Oliver Lurot from Savills, who says: “It’s full of all sorts of delicious and hard-to-find food and drink. My favourite is the French confectionery.” 35 Craven Road, W2 (020 3719 3696) DISTINCTIVE SHOE REPAIRS, W2 Aidan Coates from Hamptons International nominates this Bayswater cobbler as his local hero, saying: “It’s a great stand-out business in the area, it’s totally traditional and run by one cobbler who’s incredibly skilled and knowledgeable about his trade.” We’re doting on its charmingly traditional façade, too – a proper old London shopfront. 3 Norfolk Place, W2 (020 7460 6610)

TESTING TIMES The reformation of the London Consortium is set to change 11+ testing this year and prestigious boys’ schools are dropping the 13+ common entrance exam: James Stenning, North Bridge House Prep School’s new headteacher, is a firm advocate of the simplified process Historically, North Bridge House Prep School has successfully prepared girls and boys for entry to the top senior schools in the country at 11+ and 13+ respectively. For entry from September 2019 onwards, however, girls applying to a London school in the 11+ Consortium will sit a bespoke, multiple-choice cognitive ability test, which will incorporate mathematics, verbal and non-verbal questions. “The change is intended to reduce the amount of preparation required to sit the exam, which was restricting the curriculum in schools, and to limit the damage done to girls’ mental health from the extensive and expensive tutoring that takes place,” explains NBH Prep Head, Mr Stenning. Meanwhile, elite boys’ schools such as Westminster and

St. Paul’s, which NBH graduates often attend, are replacing the 13+ common entrance exam with 11+ pre-tests – also in a bid to reduce pressure on pupils, parents and teachers. “These changes should be lauded. Schools will have more time to develop critical thinking in pupils, as well as wider ‘soft’ skills which will build their confidence to shine at interview. Secondary schools should end up recruiting pupils with the most potential, rather than those who have been through intense tutoring to simply know the most for that one exam,” says Mr Stenning. James took over as Head of North Bridge House Prep School in January, having spent the previous term transitioning from his role as Deputy Head at North Bridge House Senior Canonbury. Since starting at the school he

has focused specifically on being able to make positive changes to the school’s curriculum as a result of the new 11+ processes. He welcomes the new assessments for boys and girls as an exciting opportunity for the high-achieving, co-educational day school next to Regent’s Park. He has been working closely with the NBH Nursery and Pre-Prep headteacher Christine McLelland, who prepares her pupils for natural progression to the Prep School without a formal assessment. “We do not prepare children for the 7+ as the process can be very bruising for a child. We have seen confident and competent children crumble under the pressure, which has diminished their interest in learning and knocked their self-esteem. Instead we prepare children very well for the next

stage in their learning – with almost half of the entire Year 2 cohort performing in the top five per cent of the country for English and Maths – through a broad and creative curriculum, promoting a deep understanding of the content taught,” says Mrs McLelland. North Bridge House see the changes to the 11+ assessment within the London Consortium and former Common Entrance groups as a welcome and exciting opportunity. Teachers are continuing to build on the ‘Outstanding’ Prep School’s broad and creative curriculum under the guidance of the new Head, ensuring that children are challenged in the high-achieving environment but never pressurised. Is your child itching to switch? Think your days of trudging around schools are over? Wait until your 16-year-old starts clamouring to move for the sixth form. “Some girls feel they might like to explore schools that could broaden their horizons,” says Catherine Stoker of The Independent Education Consultants. “Your child will also be more likely to consider a move if their school doesn’t offer the A Level subjects they’re interested in.” But sometimes it’s the parents who are itching to switch. “Parents may invest in independent education for this important stage,” says Catherine. “Or they might choose a co-ed boarding school, where their child will forge useful networks. Meanwhile, some parents make the opposite move – because they believe their child might have a better chance of getting into Oxbridge from the state sector.” Whatever your reasons, it’s important to be aware of the downsides. “Making new friends in just two years can be difficult,” says Catherine. “It takes a least a term to bed in. And while a bigger school environment will arguably prepare your child better for a competitive future, is the sixth form the right time to do it?”

Catherine has four tips for parents grappling with the decision 1 Establish what you’re trying to achieve. Does your child want to go to a particular university, or study a specific course? If their current school doesn’t offer what they need to get there, you have a genuine reason to move them. 2 Make sure you understand all the options available, including BTECs, the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Cambridge Pre-Us. What exactly do these courses consist of and would the assessment process suit your child? 3 Go to sixth form open days and ask the teachers what it’s like to study that subject at that school. Some schools offer Year 11s the chance to sit in on A Level lessons, too. 4 Lead with the head not the heart. Make sure there’s a legitimate reason for moving. And consider the logistics of moving one child if another stays where they are. How will you manage pick-ups and drop-offs? (independenteducationconsultants.co.uk)

How would you sum up the school in a sentence? KPS is a local, academically selective school that aims to give each student the framework they need to achieve their best – not just now, but in years to come. What makes it different? As a small school, we really can tailor what we offer to the needs of our students. Our classes are genuinely small – science is taught in classes of 12 from Year 7. Our Sixth Form has a distinct look and feel to the Lower School.

We also offer central London boarding from Year 10, and an innovative co-curricular package that includes ice skating and curling! How would you describe the atmosphere? There’s an incredibly positive atmosphere at KPS, which benefits all areas of school life. We were recently inspected by OFSTED and inspectors found that: “Relationships between pupils and their peers, and between pupils and staff, are very positive. There is a strong atmosphere of care and respect.”

How do you balance your extra-curricular activities with the academic side? Our lengthy lunch break gives students ample time to take part in clubs, music, sport and drama, as well as eating a healthy meal, catching up on work or enjoying some downtime. We schedule certain clubs for after school, which enables us to offer wraparound care from 8am to 6pm. We also have an after-school homework club. 40-44 Bark Place, W2 (020 7616 4400; kps.co.uk)

RAISING RESILIENCE “Good emotional health and wellbeing are key to academic success,” says Jenny Mackay, Headmistress of Hawkesdown House School

Kensington based independent preparatory school, Hawkesdown House prides itself on its outstanding pastoral care and its ambitions for the children, which directly contribute to the high academic standards achieved. From the very beginning, Hawkesdown House provides advice, support, reassurance and the preparation to give pupils and parents a very happy start at school. Mrs Jenny Mackay, the Headmistress, is deeply commitmented to pastoral care, academic excellence and the development of the individual. “We believe that school should be a safe place where children can be confident to learn and discover for themselves. We expect our children to be kind, considerate individuals, able to take responsibility for themselves and others and to be unafraid either to succeed, or to fail and try again,” she says.

To this end, the school is now in the second year of a rolling programme of “raising resilience” amongst the pupils. Workshops are run termly for the children alongside masterclasses for parents, all designed to help the pupils grow in confidence and self-esteem, giving them the ability to bounce back after any personal setback. Jenny Mackay continues: “Our children are more assured and confident, they are adept at speaking up on matters that impact on them and others. At Hawkesdown House we have succeeded in combining the joy of learning with very individual attention. We concentrate on knowing each pupil and understanding what is important to each family. In a world that is changing at an accelerated rate, where children of all ages feel increasingly pressurised, good emotional health and wellbeing are vital to success.”

“Hawkesdown House pupils are actively encouraged to develop both their initiative and their intellectual curiosity. By embedding these resilience workshops and masterclasses into our school community, we are ensuring that high standards of academic attainment are sustainably met and giving the children learning tools for life,” concludes Jenny. Queen Anne’s School Queen Anne's School is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, set just north of the River Thames, located in Caversham, Berkshire.

We welcome day girls and those who wish to board, either full-time or weekly, and care for them all to the highest standard. We are less than half an hour by train from London, with frequent trains from Paddington to Reading. The 35-acre site offers plenty of space for sport, including lacrosse, netball and tennis, as well as art and drama. Queen Anne’s first-class teaching includes a tutorial system that encourages students not only to achieve academic success but to develop a love for and enjoyment of learning. A new music centre with specialist-designed areas for practice and performance, and an award-winning sixth form building with a digital learning zone, learning pods, breakout rooms and a café helps facilitate collaborative and dynamic learning. A unique feature of Queen Anne’s is its innovative approach to understanding the teenage brain, reflecting BrainCanDo, the psychology and educational neuroscience research programme started by the Headmistress, Julia Harrington, five years ago.

‘You cannot teach, guide or inspire a teenager with any success unless you understand what stimulates their exuberant brains, or stalls and depresses them,’ says Mrs Harrington. ‘Our positive and inclusive approach to learning and behaviour helps every girl to get the best from themselves. It supports and engages them while they are at school but also prepares them for a successful and happy life beyond.’ We invite you to join us for our Open Mornings on Friday 8 March and Saturday 11 May, with tours starting at 9.30am. Our next Open Evening will take place on Thursday 13 June, with tours starting at 4.30pm London Paddington to Reading in just 26 minutes An extensive bus transport network, including a London service

I love London because… it’s a melting pot of people, styles, tastes and all things. First London home? An amazing Gothic Victorian conversion in Hampstead.

Musical moves Chestertons has announced a new partnership with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The collaboration launched late last year at the Royal Academy of Arts with a pared down performance by two of RPO’s musicians, alongside MD Huw Davies, who spoke to a select audience about life on the road with the world famous ensemble. As part of the relationship, the London estate agents are offering customers tickets to a number of RPO concerts, kicking off this year with Love, Legends and Fairy Tales on 5 February and Symphonic Masters on 28 March, both at the Royal Festival Hall. For Giles Milner, Marketing Director and Chairman of Chestertons’ Charity Champions, this is an exciting move. “For many years, Chestertons has supported various local groups, sports clubs, charities and campaigns,” he says, “but more recently has emerged as advocates of the world of art and culture.” (chestertons.com)

If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… a professional boxer, that would be the dream. Favourite London Street? Windmill Hill in Hampstead. There are a couple of very private and hidden houses with large gardens. I like understated houses. Best sales experience? Jumping in a black cab with a buyer immediately after showing them a top end property to go to the seller’s lawyer to exchange contracts. If not London, where? A remote hillside house in Ibiza with my family.

Q. When it comes to viewing property, do you believe in love at first sight? A. “There’s a theory that most people know within the first 90 seconds if a property is ‘the one’. But with many first viewings taking place online, most of the research has already been done. By the time buyers set foot in the house they know almost everything there is to know: the location, what it looks like, the layout… Then it’s all about the emotional pull and feel of the property. So a first viewing can be seen as love at second sight.”

Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out – who and where? David Bowie for a walk with my dog on the Heath. Creature comfort? A real log fire.
