am starting to realise that sci-fi is a really good way of asking heavily moral questions about humanity,” Anjli Mohindra tells me when we sit down to talk about her latest role, that of Archie in Joe Barton’s The Lazarus Project for Sky Max. “I suppose because it is set in another world, or a parallel time, it can really get deep into the questions about why we exist; does altruism exist; is anybody truly all good… ?” Sky describes the show, which comes out this month, as “a riveting series that speaks directly to our uncertain times and to our desire to take charge of what is beyond our control.” It tells the story of George, played by Paapa Essiedu, who is convinced he has lost his mind when he begins repeatedly reliving a day from his past, until he meets the mysterious Archie, who recruits him into a secret organisation that has the power to turn back time if the world is threatened by extinction. Known as the Lazarus Project, the group are desperately trying to stop a criminal who is hellbent on detonating a nuclear warhead and destroying the planet. “I am a huge Joe Barton fan, I really loved his last major series, Giri/Haji, so when the script came through for this, I already felt a huge amount of excitement to have my hands on it,” Anjli says, explaining the appeal of the project. “The cast as well… it is so brilliant when you are excited by the material, but also the team around you. So, we had Paapa Essiedu, Caroline Quentin, a brilliant actress called Salóme Gunnarsdóttir, Lorn Macdonald, and Rudi Dharmalingam and Charly Clive, I mean the list just goes on…” “Archie is George’s mentor, and she is just a delight to play. She is like a human grenade,” Anjli reveals of her character. “She just kind of sprung off the page. I learnt a lot from her about resilience and about social masks, and about how people can be in an awful lot of emotional pain, and yet still have this vibrancy, and this pull of humour and infectious fun. She is really such a brilliant, rounded character and was just an absolute joy to delve into.” Having watched a sneak preview of the finished show, Anjli is excited to see the response it receives from viewers. “I think they have done such a brilliant job of making it look like a Hollywood blockbuster; it looks great,” she tells me, excitedly. “It is really just the kind of show that I would love to watch. And that comes with great pressure, because you don’t want to screw it up… But, yeah, watching it was a real skin tingling moment!” Like many actors, Anjli admits that she feels conflicted when it comes to watching her work. “Do you know, it is such a two-sided feeling,” she explains, “because there is a real excitement to see how it all came together, and what other people brought to it, and whether what you did worked. Acting is so weird – it is one of those few art forms where you are the painter and also the canvas. So, you can’t stand back from it the minute you have created a scene and see how it has turned out. I mean, there is something quite liberating about that, but there is always a curiosity to see how it came together. I also find it excruciating, because I just hate the things that my face does and desperately wish that I could change it, but months have passed, and it is now immortalised on screen!” she laughs. Others clearly do not feel the same way about Anjli’s face. When she appeared as jihadi Nadia in the BBC’s Bodyguard in 2018, The Guardian wrote of her performance: “Full credit in particular to Anjli Mohindra, who played Nadia and who managed to say so much with her eyes throughout the series. From the terrified naivety she presented at the start, to the calculated zealotry she revealed at the end.” Though not her first major role, it marked a pivotal moment in her career, and is perhaps the one for which she is best known. Since then, her diverse CV has included quirky police drama Wild Bill with Rob Lowe, Netflix film Munich: The Edge of War and, most recently, medical officer Tiffany Docherty in the BBC drama Vigil. Next up after The Lazarus Project is a role in The Suspect, on ITV later this year. A gripping psychological thriller about a murder investigation, Anjli explains that the story is particularly poignant at this time. “It just felt very close to reality in many ways, because of the tragic cases of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa. Having a series about the murder of a young woman in London felt very strange and sad, but important, I think.” She plays DS Riya Devi, one of the team assigned to investigate the case. “Riya is… you wouldn’t say kickass for a guy, would you? I wish that wasn’t the word. A real hot shot, go-getting policewoman, who doesn’t necessarily want to be in murder, but has found herself there,” Anjli reveals. “And yeah, she is not a pushover, and she is not afraid to shout up the ranks to get herself heard. And I really respected that about her. Because she is a flawed character, like most of us are, and sometimes she gets it bang on, and sometimes she gets it wrong, and I think that is always quite interesting to play.” Another strong, determined character – is there a theme when it comes to the roles she is drawn to? “Yes, strength of character,” she agrees. “But I think sometimes that strength can be encased by a lot of vulnerability in a character, so also, flawed characters. As I am getting more experienced, I am realising that that is where the real fun is. You know, not necessarily likeable people!” Of course, falling in love with a character on the page is no guarantee of a part. I wonder how Anjli deals with the inevitable rejections that come with auditioning, especially for those roles she has set her heart on. “I don’t think the pain of rejection gets any easier, especially when it means so much,” she admits. “I am starting to learn, though I am not so good at applying it myself, that if the life that you have outside acting is rich and fills you with joy, then when you don’t get a job, if you can throw yourself back into the other things in your life that you love, it somehow gets a little bit easier… But it does hurt; sometimes I find myself grieving the characters that I didn’t get to play, because that version of them will not exist now, someone else will bring another version of them to life, and I feel sad that my version won’t get to live out a full realisation.” How does she go about realising the characters of the parts she does get? “I read the script as many times as I can, and then ask myself lots of questions about who they are,” she explains. “So, I try to work out what their flaws are, what they are running away from. And I do love that classic thing of writing a character biography, because I think that our childhood experiences massively shape who we are. I think that stuff really helps me to steep myself in a part. I read once that Meryl Streep always invents a secret that she imbues her characters with. She doesn’t tell anybody; it is just something that the character is trying to hide or run away from. And I think that is just such a brilliant thing. Because we are all trying to hide something. I am definitely inspired by that and starting to find ways to bring that to my characters, too.” Writing is something that allows Anjli to explore these character-building techniques, and it is something she has been doing more and more of since the start of the pandemic. “I was lucky enough to bag a place on the coveted Royal Court writers programme in 2016, and just loved it so much,” she tells me. “I cut my teeth for the first time in structure and form, and how to make a compelling story. But acting kind of took over from then, in a lovely way, I was just too consumed by it to get my pen out. But in lockdown, like a lot of people, I found my pen and got writing. It was an opportunity for people to rediscover their moonlighting hobbies. So, I was finally able to crack on with it.”

In describing it as a hobby, Anjli does herself a disservice, though – she recently secured a development deal with Urban Myth Films to create a TV series based on the life of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, the daughter of the last Maharajah of Punjab and a goddaughter of Queen Victoria. “I came across her in the book by Anita Anand, called Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary, and I just couldn’t put it down and felt like I needed to find an outlet for that,” she reveals. “Coming from a Punjabi family, I knew about the Indian Empire, and how that was dismantled and taken in by the British Empire. I was raised on stories like that. But I didn’t know that the daughter of that last king was such an incredible woman. Alongside her work with the suffragettes, she also ran a hospital in WW1 for wounded Indian soldiers who fought for Britain. And then in WW2 she took in evacuees. She was just incredible, some of the things she did would leave your jaw on the floor – you couldn’t write it, people wouldn’t believe it, but she actually did do it,” she tells me, excitedly. Still in the development stages, it is uncertain when the project might come to fruition. “These things take a really long time to become realised and be commissioned by the major commissioners,” Anjli explains. “But there is a lot of hope that somebody is going to be brave enough to snap it up, because I think that now is the time. You know, when statues are being ripped down and people are desperate to learn the truth about colonial history, I think now is the best time ever for a story like this.” Even if it is never produced, Anjli is pragmatic about the process. “I am starting to learn that even the self-expression that does not make the light of day is just as important as that which does,” she explains. “I think humans are innately creative. Even the people who swear that they are not. There is a book that I love, and I love to buy it for people, called Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. It is so good. It is so, so brilliant. It is about how humans have always needed to find creative expression. It is just what drives people, and you don’t need to make money from it, or it doesn’t need to be a vanity thing. It is just something that you can do as a hobby, and it opens you up to all sorts of things.” There are examples of this everywhere, you just need to look for them, Anjli tells me. “Have you ever seen the chewing gum art on Millennium Bridge?” She asks. “There is this guy – we met him, we ran into him while he was painting once and I was like, ‘Oh my God, you’re here!’. For me it was like meeting Banksy. The little puddles of chewing gum that you see on the streets, on that bridge that takes you from the Tate to St Paul’s, he has a tiny paintbrush and these brightly coloured paints, and he makes these little artworks. And they are like crests. Once you have seen them you can’t stop looking, so you walk over the whole bridge just staring at the ground because there are these beautiful pieces of expression. It is so good.” Whatever happens with the writing, Anjli is clear that it is something that will always be in her life. “I hope to do it alongside my acting, forever,” she exclaims. “I love the agency that comes with it. You have got the whole gamut of tools to play with – you are in the proper creative driving seat, and there is something really incredible about that. But then acting and escaping into a role is so beautiful that I don’t think I could ever give that up either. If I can, I would definitely like to be able to do both.” The Lazarus Project will air on Sky Max from 16 June

Profhilo BODY by Dr Preema While I’m not one to shy away from the needle there’s always a part of me that’s a little apprehensive – a seemingly endless feed of pillowfaced, over-Botoxed celebs doing nothing for the cause. Any anxiety I had before this treatment, however, melted away the moment I was greeted by the adorable, pixie-like Dr Preema Vig, whose synonymous clinic on Park Lane is both glamorous and sanctuary-like. I’d heard whispers about Profhilo, a revolutionary hyaluronic acid moisturising treatment that (quite literally) gets under the skin. Already a fan of facial serums and creams that contain this super hydrating ingredient, I was intrigued to see how hyaluronic acid could work elsewhere in the body. Indeed, Profhilo is best known for its rejuvenating properties on the face, but thanks to Dr Preema, Londoners can now reap its skintightening benefits on the neck, décolletage, arms, elbows and tummy. And even add volume to loose skin, saggy knees, “bingo wings” or papery skin on the hands – the possibilities are positively tantalising. But it’s the latter two that I’m particularly interested in tweaking: the arms, because no matter how much weight I lose or muscle I build up, there’s always that stubborn inner arm spot between armpit and elbow that threatens to sag. And the hands? Well, there’s a certain diamond ring that needs showing off and I want my manicured mitts to be looking their absolute best.

Dr Preema begins by identifying the areas that could do with some attention and with the aid of a perforated Profhilo template, gently marks the injection spots to create an evenly spaced web-like pattern, the idea being that the substance spreads evenly under the skin. I’ll admit, some areas are more sensitive than others, but I’m relieved to discover, within seconds, that these are barely-there baby injections – and much less painful than previously imagined. As she’s working her magic, Dr Preema explains that it’s best to think of Profhilo as a “bio-stimulation”

treatment. In other words, something that stimulates the body into renewal. Ultra pure hyaluronic acid is injected into the area, then, unlike wrinkle reducing and dermal filler treatments, Profhilo stimulates collagen and elastin, improving hydration in the deeper layers of the skin. I’m told the treatment is particularly popular because it offers an entirely natural, youthful look, whilst improving skin elasticity and minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles – yes, even on the hands. There’s some slight bruising and a bumpy texture to my skin, for which I’m given arnica infused pads to gently cover the treated areas. But any signs of the injections soon disappear. A little time and patience is required but within weeks of my second treatment I can really see and feel the results. The skin on my (newly sculpted!) inner-arm feels noticeably tighter when I pinch it, while my hands appear to have found themselves a time machine. Guilty food pleasure. Definitely ice cream. I don’t have a sweet tooth, but when it comes to ice cream, I can never say no. If you could cook for anyone, who? The dream would be to cook for Björn Frantzén. What should no kitchen be without? You will always find a blender in my kitchen. A few of them, in fact! and redefining what it means to be a successful chef, amongst them, the wonderful Chantelle Nicholson, who recently opened her new restaurant, Apricity, in Mayfair. Here, she shares a delicious seasonal recipe from the book. She says: “Making tarte tatin was one of the first jobs I had to do when I started at The Savoy Grill. I had never made, nor eaten, one before, so it was a wonderful discovery. And apricots have a special place in my heart – I am lucky enough to have eaten the best, grown by my family in Central Otago; gently plucked from the tree, sun-ripened and super sweet.”

INGREDIENTS 8 apricots | 50g/13⁄4oz caster sugar | 160g/53⁄4oz all-butter puff pastry | 1⁄2 a piece of star anise | 50g/13⁄4oz butter (kept in the fridge) | créme fraîche, to serve METHOD 1. Roll out the puff pastry to

3mm/1⁄4in thick, then pop it onto a piece of baking parchment and put it back in the fridge for 20 minutes so the pastry can rest. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 195°C/ 380°F (175°C/350°F fan), remove the butter

from the fridge and halve and destone the apricots. 2. Remove the pastry from the fridge and cut a circle to fit a small, ovenproof saucepan (approximately 12–14cm/5–51⁄2in in diameter). Place the pastry circle back on the baking parchment and return to the fridge. 3. Cut the butter into 4 pieces then press it firmly into the saucepan, using the top part of a clenched hand, into an even layer. Sprinkle over the sugar and shake the pan to distribute it evenly. 4. Grate 2 petals of the star anise onto the sugar. Push the side of one apricot half, skin down, into the sugared butter then lay the rest around the outer part of the pan, covering each other like fallen dominoes and finish with two in the centre. 5. Remove the pastry from the fridge and place on top of the apricots in the very centre of the pan. Cook over a medium-high heat until the butter and sugar begin to bubble and a golden caramel begins to form around the edges of the pastry. Put in the oven for 40–50 minutes, until the pastry is cooked through and golden. Allow to rest for 5–7 minutes before placing a plate on top of the pan, then flip the entire pan over so the tarte tatin slips gracefully onto the plate to be sliced. 6. Serve with créme fraîche and anything else you fancy – ice cream, custard or cream.

A GREEKEND IN ATHENS With Greece having dropped all of its Covid travel restrictions last month, now’s the time to pay a flying visit WORDS by BECKY POMFRET

O

h how I’ve missed the rush of new sights, sounds and experiences that come with a city break. So much more than mere respite from the everyday, those few days away offer a chance to reboot the mind and soul. And with only 48 hours to explore, every glorious moment counts (there’s always time to sleep on the plane home, after all). Having been deprived of such adventures over the past couple of years, an invitation for a three night ‘Greekend’ in Athens is snapped up. It is, remarkably, only my second time in the country; my first ever visit was to Crete, last summer. It was a holiday that saw me drawing up a list of other Greek locations I’d like to visit; Athens had been vying for top spot. Often passed through on the way to jump on a ferry to a Greek Island, I’d been urged not to overlook this bustling, noisy, colourful, dynamic, cultured city, with all of its magnificent history. I didn’t need telling twice… We are staying at one of Athens’ newest luxury hotels, the 5* Gatsby Athens, which opened its doors for the first time last autumn and is already making its mark. Paying homage to the art deco era, the building, formerly a police holding station that lay empty for many years, has been totally renovated in an effortlessly elegant style. Historic buildings in Athens are required to retain classical L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

and period features, so renowned Greek architecture firm WOA had a challenge on their hands. The shell remains much as it was when it was built in the 1930s, though plenty of greenery has been added to the exterior, in line with urban regulations. Where changes have been made, they marry seamlessly with the original features, like the marble that now accents the staircase, sourced from the same mountain as that which was used on the Acropolis. The interiors make the most of the glamour of the era; brushed gold and blush pink feature heavily – my room has a pink and gold-tiled bathroom that feels movie star-ready. The team at interior design firm Michaelis Boyd, whose signature style is instantly recognisable from The Bloomsbury in London, have pulled together a casual and very cool vibe. The lobby leads to a restaurant serving brunches, afternoon tea and cocktails. Judging by the fashionable crowd here, it has clearly already become a go-to spot for locals as well as guests. On our arrival we are offered a mojito mastiha,

a local twist on the classic mojito, created with mastic liqueur from the island of Chios. Sharing plates are passed around; massive feta salads and moussaka croquettes (which are divine). Everything agreeably washed down with a very good local rosé wine, we retreat to our rooms to freshen up before we head out to explore Athens. With its luxurious bathroom, and a huge, supercomfy bed, it’s tempting to stay put in my room, but once I’ve unpacked and checked out the view from the Juliette balcony, I’m ready to don my trainers and hit the streets. Top tip, the best way to see Athens is on foot, and to say the pavements are a little uneven would be an understatement, so pack footwear accordingly. We meet up with our guide, artist Niko, on a street-art tour run by Alternative Athens, a unique tour company that offers a way to see the city in a new light. We visit

neighbourhoods outside of the classic tourist zones and see some incredible street art, learning how each piece relates to the current social and economic situation in Athens. Riot Dog is a particular favourite: a huge image of a stray dog who became a Greek folk hero after participating in anti-austerity protests in 2011. We end our tour in graffiti-central, Psiri, where we perch on high stools to drink powerful gin and tonics at Kalimeres Bistro. We embark on a very different tour the following morning, after a much-needed lie-in and a delicious breakfast of avocado and eggs on toast. This time, it’s Vassia’s turn to guide us through the pretty streets, all the way up to the Acropolis (with one swift detour into a tiny Byzantine church, incongruously positioned in the main shopping district). We learn all about the Theatre of Dionysus and take hundreds of photos of the Temple of Athena Nike and, of course, the Parthenon. Standing in the shade of these ancient buildings, the myths Vassia is retelling seem to spring to life – stories about Gods and Heroes, like main man Zeus; Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and protector of Athens; Poseidon, God of the Sea; and Dionysus, God of Wine (of whom I am a big fan). It’s quite a climb up to and then around the Acropolis, so it’s with some relief that our next stop is for lunch. A noisy fish market is not quite the al fresco location we are expecting, but Hasapika, a Peruvian-Japanese restaurant, is not your average experience. With huge platters of sushi, massive plates of crayfish ravioli, and jugs of crisp white wine that seem to magically refill themselves, it’s a wonder we’re not still there now. Run by three friends who look like they should be on stage with The Foo Fighters, it’s a unique find and well worth a visit. One much-needed siesta later and we’re off out again – whoever said New York is the city that never sleeps has clearly never been to Athens. We start in an elegant manner, with cocktails on Cloud 9, Gatsby’s pretty roof terrace, which is complete with comfy sofas, views of the Acropolis and an open fire. By contrast, a few hours later we find ourselves stage-side, inches away from a crazy cabaret of scantily clad dancers in a club called The Box. Their famous Bouzoukia experience offers modern Greek music mixed with impressive light shows and some very interestingly dressed dancers: apparently a typically Athenian Friday night. I stagger through until 2am, discovering the next morning that our Greek hosts left at 6am and yet still look remarkably chipper at breakfast! We take advantage of the hotel’s luxury car service and pay a visit to the nearby Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. Newly constructed and bringing life to a previously neglected area, it’s home to The Greek National Opera and the National Library, and enjoys one of the largest green spaces in Athens. It’s well worth a visit for the spectacular views and the chance to hire a bike, or to sit and watch the impressive fountain displays. Afterwards, we pop up the road

for a spot of envious yacht-spotting at Flisvos Marina, before finding ourselves medicating our sore heads with piña coladas at Bolivar Beach Bar, whilst dipping our toes into the Med. Dinner that evening is at Birdman – a Japanese grill serving outstandingly good yakitori and dry-aged yakinikustyle meats cooked in an open kitchen on a robata grill. The Iberico pulled pork sando is so good that I’d fly back to Athens in a heartbeat to try it again. Back at base, a small issue with my previous room sees me upgraded to the ‘party suite’. Situated next door to the roof-top bar, it boasts a hot tub on its private terrace (and partition doors that can be opened if you want to hire out Cloud 9 and throw a party). All the rooms at Gatsby have one common feature: a mystery ‘dare’ button. Entirely fitting with the hotel’s hedonistic vibe and the seductive photography and artwork on display, it is a unique quirk that adds a little intrigue to the stay. On this, the last night, I pluck up the courage

to press the button. What happened, you ask? You’ll have to book a stay and try for yourself if you really want to know… It is with some regret that we descend to breakfast for the very last time the next morning. The warm and personal service is so attentive that our orders have been remembered from previous days, although I slightly confuse matters by deciding to mix things up and treat myself to a huge stack of fluffy pancakes piled high with blueberries and drenched in maple syrup. The Gatsby has been absolutely perfect – cool and quirky, yet with classical elegance and old school values. Add to that an envious location, glorious rooms, and delicious food and drinks, and it is an absolute must for any Athens trip. Go on, press that button. e’ve asked a lot of our gardens over the last few years. During the various lockdowns they became a veritable sanctuary, and for us city-dwellers in particular, a much-needed extension of our living rooms. Post-pandemic, the trend for blurred indoor/ outdoor spaces continues to spark the imagination. We want creative solutions to our limited patio space or cosy walled terrace that maximise on every square foot. Kate Gould is an award-winning garden designer whose Out of the Shadows entry at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show addressed exactly this. “As we (hopefully) come out of the pandemic, people have certainly become more mindful about creating safe spaces they can hunker down in,” she says. “They are thinking outside the box in terms of what they want their gardens to deliver, and they’re often not sure how to achieve this within a traditional garden model.” Kate offers reassuring advice on incorporating some seemingly over-ambitious garden ideas into a smaller outside space. “I want to show people that if they want a swim spa for example, or a space to do yoga, they don’t need to choose between having that and a beautiful garden. It doesn’t need to be an either/or choice. It’s about coming out of quite narrow, traditional views of what a garden needs to be,” she argues. “It can work on so many different levels and clever design choices can marry up lifestyle needs.” For the garden designer, a well-chosen water feature can bring life to a smaller patch, while incorporating a barbecue or firepit adds an important entertaining element. “The personal elements you choose for your garden are what make it uniquely yours,” she says. “These finishing touches are entirely up to you, and, over time, they will most likely change with fashions and trends. In a small space, every element needs to work hard, often serving a dual purpose.”

Kate started her property search ten years ago with an apartment in mind, but when she was shown this Edwardian terraced house, she promptly fell in love. The interior designer had a rotation of flatmates before her husband moved in in 2016. The couple now share the five-bed family home with their three children. Tell me about living and working in west London Shepherd’s Bush is a great place to live, it’s so easy to get anywhere in London and there are lots of young families nearby, which is nice. I’m very lucky to have my studio just around the corner in Notting Hill, one of my favourite areas – so many lovely cafés, restaurants and shops on the doorstep, and I’m a stone’s throw from Portobello Road, which I visit a lot in search of one-off vintage and antique pieces for clients. What do you usually look for in a property? That’s a tricky one, often it’s just a gut feeling rather than a specific feature. As well as having character, I also have to be able to see the property’s potential if it’s something I’m going to be doing work to, taking into account what the spaces will be used for, and by whom. One of the things I fell in love with most about this house was the fact that all the original features remained intact and well cared for. When making changes to the property I’ve tried to remain sensitive to them. Having worked on several architecturally and historically important buildings for clients, we always make sure to respect the architectural integrity of each space, adapting our aesthetic to work with the building in question. What structural changes have you made? When I first moved in, I just did up the two existing bathrooms and lived in it for four years without making any other changes. Then in 2016, with a change in occupancy, we decided to do a side return and loft conversion, along with a complete redecoration of the house and damp proofing of the basement, which turned from a horrible damp space into a now much needed laundry room! How would you describe your interiors style? I think one of the main characteristics of my style is creating interiors that feel lived in rather than styled. I also love layering different colours, patterns, artworks and furnishings. My background in set and costume design has no doubt influenced my style, teaching me from the outset to be bold as well as how to create mood and atmosphere in my work. The house feels very naturally put together. Has the look evolved over time? (And how do you achieve this lived-in look for clients?) Yes, my own home has developed gradually over time, which is something we try to achieve for clients, just in a shorter time frame! I love creating spaces with an authentic sense of accumulation by combining antiques, fabrics, colour and art, which allows the personality of our clients to shine through. We work predominantly on residential projects, which tends to mean the client is the homeowner, so we find the most important thing in creating a home is to take into account the patterns and priorities of our clients’ day-to-day lives – the way they use the house and the way they see themselves. It’s important the interiors feel like home and appear to have grown organically.

Tell me about your furniture choices I love sourcing vintage items from all over the place, Adam Bray antiques always has really beautiful and interesting pieces, as does Dorian Caffot de Fawes. We’ve recently bought quite a few items from Howe London and Byron & Gomez, both of whom have timeless collections plus the option of ordering bespoke. Oh, and Collier Webb and PINCH – all handcrafted in England.

Can you talk me through a few of your favourite pieces? The dining room chandelier is by Madeleine Boulesteix. Madeleine makes chandeliers and lanterns out of old jelly moulds, teacups and cutlery! They’re completely beautiful as well as being utterly unique. The one in our house combines some old chandelier pieces I bought in a French market when I was 20, along with some jelly moulds and glassware. The sofas in the sitting room were made extra deep as we’re both tall, upholstered in Gainsborough fabric, which I’d developed for a previous project and loved so much I decided to use it again. And the kitchen island is actually a Victorian flower arranging table from Lorfords Antiques, that we made higher by adding to the legs.

Any interesting family heirlooms? What’s the story? The orange velvet armchair in my son’s room belonged to my mum, which she in turn inherited. The velvet is an incredible colour and has so much character where the velvet has worn away in parts. Which is your favourite room? I particularly like the whole of the ground floor because it works so well for a family with small children. In the middle is the kitchen, which is open plan to the dining room at the front and sitting room at the rear. The sitting room has wonderful afternoon light and I love seeing the Tube trains rushing past in the distance. What’s next for Kate Guinness Design? We’ve got lots going on at the moment, we’re working on our own house in Wiltshire, which involves the re-build and conversion of a stable block that had half fallen down. We’re re-building half of it from scratch, converting the other half and joining the two. Two other ongoing projects are complete refurbishments of large Kensington family homes, which have involved everything from structural work to choosing tea towels and everything in between! We also have a few smaller projects ongoing, including a house in Wales, which is in the most incredible setting and which we’re doing work to gradually, a few rooms per year, as it is mostly rented out for holidays. kateguinness.co.uk

How long have you been head? Since September 2021. Previously, I was the assistant head (academic) at Garden House School. What attracted you to the school? The girls. They have an absolute passion for learning. They’re also kind, curious and already understand the positive difference they can make in our world.

W

e all know people who’ve deserted the Capital since the pandemic in search of a better life. But this so-called “exodus” doesn’t appear to have reduced the competition for places at London private schools; if anything, demand has gone up. According to Francis Hamlyn of The Good Schools Guide, a couple of new schools have even opened since the start of the pandemic, thanks to what he calls “the boundless interest in private education in London”. That’s certainly been true of North Bridge House, as the executive head of its senior schools, Brendan Pavey, explains. “We were worried we might see the same knock-on effect as in 2008, when parents viewed private education as a luxury,” he recalls. “But it was the reverse. State school parents in particular started to notice how well our pupils were doing, and we even had applications continue to come through in the summer term and during the holidays of 2020.” Brendan attributes this interest to the school’s swift, comprehensive and commended shift to online learning: within a week of closing, the entire timetable was available through MS Teams. But two years on, demand is still rising, and there continue to be far more applicants than places. (Though Brendan says it’s hard to know exactly how much of the increase is due to the pandemic.)

With competition still hot, then, what advice does Brendan have for parents wanting to win a place for their child? “First, make sure the school is a good fit for them and that they have a good chance of getting in,” he suggests. “Talk to their primary or prep school teacher and think carefully about the entry criteria. Then, if they’re coming for an interview, don’t over-prepare them. Let them be themselves, relax and reveal what they’re interested in.” Finally, if you’re thinking of escaping the competition by quitting the capital, Brendan suggests you tread carefully. “London offers a huge variety, from academic hothouses to our lowpressure, high support model,” he says. “If you move somewhere more rural, the only available schools may not suit your child. founder, The Birch House I’m an early riser and can often be found at Kensington Leisure Centre doing a 7am HIIT class; occasionally I’ll squeeze in a short run, too, although my feet aren’t what they used to be when I ran the London Marathon back in 2018! I have many memories of torturous hill training in Holland Park. I’d pop a fiver in my sock so I could reward myself with a coffee at the café afterwards! It’s a beautiful park, spread across 54 acres and complete with formal gardens, wooded areas and a children’s playground. It’s even home to Holland Park Opera – one of these days I hope to make it to one of the amazing performances they put on in the park every summer. Most mornings I’m in my studio by 8am. If I’m not working there, I’ll be out fitting curtains, doing measure ups and meeting clients, most of whom are in the immediate vicinity. I feel very lucky to live in such a great area and to get to see inside some truly fantastic homes. I started my business in 2015 after a lifetime of sewing – a skill I was taught by my mum from an early age. I specialise in making handmade bespoke curtains, blinds and soft furnishings, and guide clients through the process from start to finish, including supplying curtain poles and tracks. I work on my own in a studio, with the radio and podcasts for company. I use a lot of fabric from The Cloth Shop, nearby on Portobello Road; it’s a great place for linens and sheer fabrics in particular. Many years ago, I worked in various restaurants on High Street Kensington, and I still enjoy shopping in the area. I recently picked up some amazing martini glasses at TK Maxx. Speaking of cocktails, there’s an amazing new bar called Amaro, which serves brilliant cocktails and food – definitely worth a visit. I’m also often to be found in Decathlon; I love being outdoors, and I particularly enjoy cycling. Often at the weekend I’ll do a few rounds of Hyde Park; we’re so lucky to have so many green spaces, and yet still enjoy such a central location. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. In an overcrowded city, outside space soon becomes a luxury – even if that’s a tiny but cherished balcony. It comes as little surprise then, that London properties with gardens sell for a premium. Luxe garden furniture brand Moda Furnishings has gathered and analysed data from a variety of cities across the UK to find out where a garden adds the most value, and sure enough, the Capital comes out on top. On average London houses sell for around £510,000. Moda’s research shows that those with a garden or outdoor space sold at a staggering 250 per cent higher than those without. So, if you’re lucky enough to have a property with a patch, this summer, make sure you’re making the most of it.
