The definitive guide to London living FROM THE EDITOR
62
British summer time may not promise us wall-to-wall sunshine, but it does guarantee long, light-filled evenings – providing the perfect opportunity for outdoor entertaining when the weather plays ball. If you’ll be hosting, you’ll want to make sure your garden is guest-ready. The experts show us how to make the most of even the tiniest space in this month’s interiors feature. We’ll take one or two rainy evenings if it means being able to catch a few episodes of The Lazarus Project guilt-free, though. Star of the show Anjli Mohindra is looking blooming beautiful on our cover this month. Perhaps best known for her surprising role in Bodyguard a few years back, and her recent appearance in submarine drama Vigil, she’s about to hit screens in a brand new sci-fi thriller for Sky; we caught up to learn more. Elsewhere in the issue you’ll find perfect picnics, sublime swimwear and magical Mediterranean mini breaks, which should all make for a superb summer!
Up your garden game with a chic makeover

Situated on the preferred south side of this quiet cul-de-sac, backing directly onto a charming local park as well as a short stroll to the beautiful open spaces of Golders Hill Park, a detached four-bedroom house of some 2,380 sq ft (built circa 1960) with the accommodation arranged primarily over two floors plus, unusually, a lower ground floor. CULTURE EXHIBITION
Vision and Virtuosity
10 June-19 August, Saatchi Gallery Like magpies to shiny things, we cannot resist the prospect of a Tiffany & Co. exhibition. From Fifth Avenue to Sloane Square, the famed jewellers will be bringing over 400 objects, taking us on a ‘visual chronicle’ through archival jewellery designs, iconic window displays, and relics of popular culture including, excitingly, the original script from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The exhibition “tells the extraordinary story of one of the oldest luxury jewellers, through its nearly 200-year history of pioneering creativity and legendary craftsmanship,” says Tiffany’s president and CEO Anthony Ledru. “We are thrilled to share the world of Tiffany & Co. and our unique high jewellery style with London.” Duke of York’s HQ, King’s Rd, SW3 (020 7811 3070; saatchigallery.com)
EXHIBITION
In the Black Fantastic 29 June-18 September, Hayward Gallery
Michael Wharley & Feast Creative
This is the UK’s first exhibition dedicated to the work of Black artists who use fantastical elements to address racial injustice – whilst exploring alternative realities. Curated by writer and broadcaster Ekow Eshun, we can expect a wealth of new works and special commissions from artists including Nick Cave, Ellen Gallagher, Tabita Rezaire and Cauleen Smith. Hayward Gallery’s Ralph Rugoff says this will be “the first exhibition to highlight this very significant – and still under-acknowledged – artistic territory that extends across the field of visual art to recent trends in literature, film, television, and music. At once vivid and thought-provoking, lyrical and relevant, the works in the show embody the power of the fantastic to help us chart new ways of confronting legacies of racism and celebrating cultures of resistance and affirmation.” Important and intriguing.

am starting to realise that sci-fi is a really good way of asking heavily moral questions about humanity,” Anjli Mohindra tells me when we sit down to talk about her latest role, that of Archie in Joe Barton’s The Lazarus Project for Sky Max. “I suppose because it is set in another world, or a parallel time, it can really get deep into the questions about why we exist; does altruism exist; is anybody truly all good… ?” Sky describes the show, which comes out this month, as “a riveting series that speaks directly to our uncertain times and to our desire to take charge of what is beyond our control.” It tells the story of George, played by Paapa Essiedu, who is convinced he has lost his mind when he begins repeatedly reliving a day from his past, until he meets the mysterious Archie, who recruits him into a secret organisation that has the power to turn back time if the world is threatened by extinction. Known as the Lazarus Project, the group are desperately trying to stop a criminal who is hellbent on detonating a nuclear warhead and destroying the planet. “I am a huge Joe Barton fan, I really loved his last major series, Giri/Haji, so when the script came through for this, I already felt a huge amount of excitement to have my hands on it,” Anjli says, explaining the appeal of the project. “The cast as well… it is so brilliant when you are excited by the material, but also the team around you. So, we had Paapa Essiedu, Caroline Quentin, a brilliant actress called Salóme Gunnarsdóttir, Lorn Macdonald, and Rudi Dharmalingam and Charly Clive, I mean the list just goes on…” “Archie is George’s mentor, and she is just a delight to play. She is like a human grenade,” Anjli reveals of her character. “She just kind of sprung off the page. I learnt a lot from her about resilience and about social masks, and about how people can be in an awful lot of emotional pain, and yet still have this vibrancy, and this pull of humour and infectious fun. She is really such a brilliant, rounded character and was just an absolute joy to delve into.” Having watched a sneak preview of the finished show, Anjli is excited to see the response it receives from viewers. “I think they have done such a brilliant job of making it look like a Hollywood blockbuster; it looks great,” she tells me, excitedly. “It is really just the kind of show that I would love to watch. And that comes with great pressure, because you don’t want to screw it up… But, yeah, watching it was a real skin tingling moment!” Like many actors, Anjli admits that she feels conflicted when it comes to watching her work. “Do you know, it is such a two-sided feeling,” she explains, “because there is a real excitement to see how it all came together, and what other people brought to it, and whether what you did worked. Acting is so weird – it is one of those few art forms where you are the painter and also the canvas. So, you can’t stand back from it the minute you have created a scene and see how it has turned out. I mean, there is something quite liberating about that, but there is always a curiosity to see how it came together. I also find it excruciating, because I just hate the things that my face does and desperately wish that I could change it, but months have passed, and it is now immortalised on screen!” she laughs. Others clearly do not feel the same way about Anjli’s face. When she appeared as jihadi Nadia in the BBC’s Bodyguard in 2018, The Guardian wrote of her performance: “Full credit in particular to Anjli Mohindra, who played Nadia and who managed to say so much with her eyes throughout the series. From the terrified naivety she presented at the start, to the calculated zealotry she revealed at the end.” Though not her first major role, it marked a pivotal moment in her career, and is perhaps the one for which she is best known. Since then, her diverse CV has included quirky police drama Wild Bill with Rob Lowe, Netflix film Munich: The Edge of War and, most recently, medical officer Tiffany Docherty in the BBC drama Vigil. INTERVIEW
Next up after The Lazarus Project is a role in The Suspect, on ITV later this year. A gripping psychological thriller about a murder investigation, Anjli explains that the story is particularly poignant at this time. “It just felt very close to reality in many ways, because of the tragic cases of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa. Having a series about the murder of a young woman in London felt very strange and sad, but important, I think.” She plays DS Riya Devi, one of the team assigned to investigate the case. “Riya is… you wouldn’t say kickass for a guy, would you? I wish that wasn’t the word. A real hot shot, go-getting policewoman, who doesn’t necessarily want to be in murder, but has found herself there,” Anjli reveals. “And yeah, she is not a pushover, and she is not afraid to shout up the ranks to get herself heard. And I really respected that about her. Because she is a flawed character, like most of us are, and sometimes she gets it bang on, and sometimes she gets it wrong, and I think that is always quite interesting to play.” Another strong, determined character – is there a theme when it comes to the roles she is drawn to? “Yes, strength of character,” she agrees. “But I think sometimes that strength can be encased by a lot of vulnerability in a character, so also, flawed characters. As I am getting more experienced, I am realising that that is where the real fun is. You know, not necessarily likeable people!” Of course, falling in love with a character on the page is no guarantee of a part. I wonder how Anjli deals with the inevitable rejections that come with auditioning, especially for those roles she has set her heart on. “I don’t think the pain of rejection gets any easier, especially when it means so much,” she admits. “I am starting to learn, though I am not so good at applying it myself, that if the life that you have outside acting is rich and fills you with joy, then when you don’t get a job, if you can throw yourself back into the other things in your life that you love, it somehow gets a little bit easier… But it does hurt; sometimes I find myself grieving the characters that I didn’t get to play, because that version of them will not exist now, someone else will bring another version of them to life, and I feel sad that my version won’t get to live out a full realisation.” How does she go about realising the characters of the parts she does get? “I read the script as many times as I can, and then ask myself lots of questions about who they are,” she explains. “So, I try to work out what their flaws are, what they are running away from. And I do love that classic thing of writing a character biography, because I think that our childhood experiences massively shape who we are. I think that stuff really helps me to steep myself in a part. I read once that Meryl Streep always invents a secret that she imbues her characters with. She doesn’t tell anybody; it is just something that the character is trying to hide or run away from. And I think that is just such a brilliant thing. Because we are all trying to hide something. I am definitely inspired by that and starting to find ways to bring that to my characters, too.” Writing is something that allows Anjli to explore these character-building techniques, and it is something she has been doing more and more of since the start of the pandemic. “I was lucky enough to bag a place on the coveted Royal Court writers programme in 2016, and just loved it so much,” she tells me. “I cut my teeth for the first time in structure and form, and how to make a compelling story. But acting kind of took over from then, in a lovely way, I was just too consumed by it to get my pen out. But in lockdown, like a lot of people, I found my pen and got writing. It was an opportunity for people to rediscover their moonlighting hobbies. So, I was finally able to crack on with it.”

05_FabricJUN22_Interview (AM)_6p.indd 44
In describing it as a hobby, Anjli does herself a disservice, though – she recently secured a development deal with Urban Myth Films to create a TV series based on the life of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, the daughter of the last Maharajah of Punjab and a goddaughter of Queen Victoria. “I came across her in the book by Anita Anand, called Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary, and I just couldn’t put it down and felt like I needed to find an outlet for that,” she reveals. “Coming from a Punjabi family, I knew about the Indian Empire, and how that was dismantled and taken in by the British Empire. I was raised on stories like that. But I didn’t know that the daughter of that last king was such an incredible woman. Alongside her work with the suffragettes, she also ran a hospital in WW1 for wounded Indian soldiers who fought for Britain. And then in WW2 she took in evacuees. She was just incredible, some of the things she did would leave your jaw on the floor – you couldn’t write it, people wouldn’t believe it, but she actually did do it,” she tells me, excitedly. Still in the development stages, it is uncertain when the project might come to fruition. “These things take a really long time to become realised and be commissioned by the major commissioners,” Anjli explains. “But there is a lot of hope that somebody is going to be brave enough to snap it up, because I think that now is the time. You know, when statues are being ripped down and people are desperate to learn the truth about colonial history, I think now is the best time ever for a story like this.” Even if it is never produced, Anjli is pragmatic about the process. “I am starting to learn that even the self-expression that does not make the light of day is just as important as that which does,” she explains. “I think humans are innately creative. Even the people who swear that they are not. There is a book that I love, and I love to buy it for people, called Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. It is so good. It is so, so brilliant. It is about how humans have always needed to find creative expression. It is just what drives people, and you don’t need to make money from it, or it doesn’t need to be a vanity thing. It is just something that you can do as a hobby, and it opens you up to all sorts of things.” There are examples of this everywhere, you just need to look for them, Anjli tells me. “Have you ever seen the chewing gum art on Millennium Bridge?” She asks. “There is this guy – we met him, we ran into him while he was painting once and I was like, ‘Oh my God, you’re here!’. For me it was like meeting Banksy. The little puddles of chewing gum that you see on the streets, on that bridge that takes you from the Tate to St Paul’s, he has a tiny paintbrush and these brightly coloured paints, and he makes these little artworks. And they are like crests. Once you have seen them you can’t stop looking, so you walk over the whole bridge just staring at the ground because there are these beautiful pieces of expression. It is so good.” Whatever happens with the writing, Anjli is clear that it is something that will always be in her life. “I hope to do it alongside my acting, forever,” she exclaims. “I love the agency that comes with it. You have got the whole gamut of tools to play with – you are in the proper creative driving seat, and there is something really incredible about that. But then acting and escaping into a role is so beautiful that I don’t think I could ever give that up either. If I can, I would definitely like to be able to do both.” The Lazarus Project will air on Sky Max from 16 June

Renowned London aesthetician Dr Preema Vig is known for achieving exquisite, natural results
Look good, feel better FABRIC RECOMMENDS
Profhilo BODY by Dr Preema While I’m not one to shy away from the needle there’s always a part of me that’s a little apprehensive – a seemingly endless feed of pillowfaced, over-Botoxed celebs doing nothing for the cause. Any anxiety I had before this treatment, however, melted away the moment I was greeted by the adorable, pixie-like Dr Preema Vig, whose synonymous clinic on Park Lane is both glamorous and sanctuary-like. I’d heard whispers about Profhilo, a revolutionary hyaluronic acid moisturising treatment that (quite literally) gets under the skin. Already a fan of facial serums and creams that contain this super hydrating ingredient, I was intrigued to see how hyaluronic acid could work elsewhere in the body. Indeed, Profhilo is best known for its rejuvenating properties on the face, but thanks to Dr Preema, Londoners can now reap its skintightening benefits on the neck, décolletage, arms, elbows and tummy. And even add volume to loose skin, saggy knees, “bingo wings” or papery skin on the hands – the possibilities are positively tantalising. But it’s the latter two that I’m particularly interested in tweaking: the arms, because no matter how much weight I lose or muscle I build up, there’s always that stubborn inner arm spot between armpit and elbow that threatens to sag. And the hands? Well, there’s a certain diamond ring that needs showing off and I want my manicured mitts to be looking their absolute best.
TAKE 5: GLOW FOR IT
1
3
Dr Preema begins by identifying the areas that could do with some attention and with the aid of a perforated Profhilo template, gently marks the injection spots to create an evenly spaced web-like pattern, the idea being that the substance spreads evenly under the skin. I’ll admit, some areas are more sensitive than others, but I’m relieved to discover, within seconds, that these are barely-there baby injections – and much less painful than previously imagined. As she’s working her magic, Dr Preema explains that it’s best to think of Profhilo as a “bio-stimulation”
treatment. In other words, something that stimulates the body into renewal. Ultra pure hyaluronic acid is injected into the area, then, unlike wrinkle reducing and dermal filler treatments, Profhilo stimulates collagen and elastin, improving hydration in the deeper layers of the skin. I’m told the treatment is particularly popular because it offers an entirely natural, youthful look, whilst improving skin elasticity and minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles – yes, even on the hands. There’s some slight bruising and a bumpy texture to my skin, for which I’m given arnica infused pads to gently cover the treated areas. But any signs of the injections soon disappear. A little time and patience is required but within weeks of my second treatment I can really see and feel the results. The skin on my (newly sculpted!) inner-arm feels noticeably tighter when I pinch it, while my hands appear to have found themselves a time machine. They feel smooth and wrinkle-free – and they look fantastic in those engagement party photos. KH Prices for Profhilo BODY start from £850 for a 2-part treatment. SUSTAINABLE FASHION
Brilliant boots
Prussia Cove @AntonBelmonte
With festivals once again on the agenda, it’s a big summer for music fans. But camping and unpredictable British weather aren’t always a brilliant combination. We all remember those Glastonbury pictures of tents floating away in rivers of mud, right? It goes without saying that if you’ve been lucky enough to get your hands on tickets, you’d be wise to pack footwear that will see you through even the most extreme weather. With inner boots made from 100 per cent wool to ensure toasty toes on chilly evenings (and keep your feet cool on warm days), and hardworking removable waterproof rubber outer soles that you can slip off outside your tent, we think Voyloks are the ultimate festival footwear. The British brand promises to be 100 per cent sustainable, too. The wool is moulded into shape, without the use of stitches and seams, meaning it can be composted at the end of the boot’s life, and the rubber sole can be recycled. Continuing the no waste theme, the boots arrive in a clever RePack bag, with no tissue paper or cardboard – just post the bag back using the simple and free repost system and it will be reused. An incredible 150 per cent of the carbon footprint created in the production of Voyloks is offset by a rewilding pledge that sees one native tree, such as alder, birch, rowan or willow, planted for every pair sold. That’s what you call putting your best foot forward… From £115 (voylok.com)

A NEW YOU
From body contouring and laser hair removal, to skin tightening and chemical peels, one Marylebone clinic is leading the way with bespoke aesthetic treatments Demand for ‘tweakments’ is higher than ever before – these non-invasive aesthetic treatments smooth, tighten and sculpt with no downtime required, making them super convenient. Even more so since the opening of a brand-new clinic in the heart of Marylebone, just moments from St Christopher’s Place. Set within a beautiful heritage building featuring high ceilings, and bright, spacious rooms, Halcyon Aesthetics offers one-of-akind, bespoke treatments from its four treatment rooms. The luxurious facility was launched last year by Dr. Osman Bashir Tahir (aka Dr. OBT), a consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon with over 19 years of surgical experience. Dr. OBT began private practice in 2009, going on to open six successful healthcare facilities in Pakistan, where he has treated over fifty thousand patients. Excitingly, the London clinic is his first venture outside Pakistan. Here, Dr. OBT and his team offer bespoke face, body and wellness treatments in a relaxed and comfortable setting. From clinical grade and laser facials to energy-based treatments for skin tightening and rejuvenation, non-surgical injectable treatments and IV therapies, to laser hair removal, there’s a treatment for everybody (and every face). Halcyon is proud to work with the very latest technology, including EMsculpt Neo, the top non-surgical body contouring treatment in the world; EMTONE, which is used to simultaneously treat cellulite and tighten skin; and Exilis, a radiofrequency treatment for fat reduction and skin tightening that can be used on both the face and body. Meanwhile, innovative laser treatments include the Soprano Titanium Laser for hair removal; and the multi-tasking Aerolase, which can be used to treat more than 30 clinical conditions such as rosacea, acne, fungal infections and many more. The Halcyon Hollywood Spectra Laser is the latest addition to the practice, and promises to rejuvenate skin, tighten pores, and improve skin clarity, leaving clients with a healthy, radiant glow. Wrinkles and lines are addressed using Micro-Botox, with a focus always on achieving a natural, unfrozen look. Popular areas include forehead wrinkles, ‘bunny’ lines across the bridge of the nose and smoker’s lip. The Nefertiti Lift is a Botox technique used for neck rejuvenation and is named after the Egyptian queen Nefertiti. But Dr. OBT is perhaps best known for his unique injection techniques, using dermal fillers to enhance and improve facial features – the Face Sculpt is designed to help define the chin and jawline; Face Contour creates perfect facial symmetry; OBT Angel Lips promises the most natural results with lip fillers; and Liquid Rhinosculpt smooths the bridge of the nose, simultaneously lifting the tip without the need for surgery. Add skin boosters for face and body, regenerative therapies for hair loss and micro needling into the mix and the aesthetic wish list is wanting for nothing here. Feast your eyes on this month’s finest AL FRESCO EATING
Summer snacking Pack up a picnic, lazy summer days are here. And if making sandwiches isn’t your idea of fun, fear not, Fabric favourites Melrose & Morgan are on hand to do all the hard work. The north London grocer and kitchen has unveiled their selection of seasonal picnics, available from their stores in Primrose Hill and Hampstead – on the doorstep of some of the Capital’s finest green spaces, no less. There’s something on offer for everybody – the Heath & Hill is named after these famous picnicking spots and is filled with a selection of summer salads, empanadas, seasonal frittatas, smashed avocado, hummus and chocolate Florentines; meanwhile, fans of something a little more old school will love the Traditional British, which is filled with pork sausage rolls, Scotch eggs, bacon and cheddar tarts, crisps, a punnet of
fresh strawberries and rich chocolate brownies; and offering a touch of luxury, and a nod to this month’s Jubilee celebrations, the Afternoon Tea hamper has been inspired by Her Majesty’s favourite meal of the day, filled with sweet delicacies including home-baked lemon polenta cake and chocolate chip cookies. Each hamper is available in a variety of sizes, to feed up to six, and comes in a branded picnic tote bag with disposable eco cutlery, though wicker baskets, dining sets and herringbone blankets are available upon request. There’s even a bespoke option for those looking for the ultimate in al fresco luxury.
NEW OPENING
Simply seasonal Raised on his family’s smallholding in Herefordshire, Thomas Straker developed a passion for hunting and foraging in the surrounding Black Mountains, and with that grew a love of seasonal, sustainable food. Having trained as a chef and spent over ten years working in some of the Capital’s best restaurants, including Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner and The Dorchester, he went on to make a name for himself sharing recipes on TikTok. Excitingly, he’s now opening his own restaurant, right here on Golborne Road. Working with only trusted, small-scale and local suppliers such as Huntsham Court Farm for meat, Keltic Seafare for fresh, Scottish shellfish and Wildfarmed for flour. Straker’s, which opens this month, will offer exceptional, seasonal produce cooked with simplicity and flair. A mix of snacks, small and larger plates will form the base of a constantly evolving menu that has been heavily influenced by the Italian style of cooking. Dishes like the whole grilled seabass with white peach, green beans and almonds, and slow cooked lamb shoulder, broad beans and salsa verde will showcase Thomas’s approach to cooking; full of colour, flavour and exceptional ingredients. Meanwhile, a short but specialist wine list has been curated by Alex Percy at The Modest Merchant, who works exclusively with small, low intervention wineries from France, Italy and Spain. The intimate 40-cover space will feature an open kitchen and a concrete-topped bar will offer ringside seats for a few lucky diners.
From £45, to buy in store and online, with delivery available. Available until the end of September. For details, see melroseandmorgan.com

What do you cook on your days off? I love doing a roast chicken – you can’t beat those simple pleasures. It’s important to get the roast potatoes right – they should be crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
Chef owner, Amethyst
What’s the last thing you cooked? I’m in the process of testing the last few dishes for Amethyst. The last one I cooked would be the liquorice croquette with tarragon mayo. It’s delicious, even if I do say so myself! What’s your signature dish? My signature would be salmon and foie gras. For this, the salmon is cured with rose water and served with yuzu jelly, Piedmont hazelnuts and apple. It is paired with our lovely foie gras, L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

Best meal you’ve ever eaten? Without question, at Noma in Copenhagen – the whole experience was incredible! The next restaurant on my ‘to try’ list is Björn Frantzén’s own Frantzén restaurant in Stockholm. His style of cooking is quite similar to my own and I’d really love to try it.
Guilty food pleasure. Definitely ice cream. I don’t have a sweet tooth, but when it comes to ice cream, I can never say no. If you could cook for anyone, who? The dream would be to cook for Björn Frantzén. What should no kitchen be without? You will always find a blender in my kitchen. A few of them, in fact! I personally love a Vitamix; it’s a great go-to blender and from a highly regarded and trusted brand. NEW LOCATION
Continuing the Lina legacy Soho stalwarts Lina Stores have been serving the finest Italian fare to Londoners since 1944, and now they’re bringing a slice of Mediterranean magic to Marylebone, with a new all-day dining restaurant, deli and bar opening this month. Located on the corner of Marylebone Lane and Wigmore Street, the new site will be spread over two floors. The delicatessen will be reminiscent of the original Brewer Street store, offering coffee and light bites during the day and selling a selection of the finest Italian pantry items to take away. Come nightfall, the deli space will transform into an intimate wine bar serving delicious antipasti alongside a selection of Italian wines and
classic Lina Stores aperitivi. Offering a different experience, the restaurant, with its opentheatre kitchen, will offer more substantial meals – along with much-loved Lina Stores signature dishes, the menu will include a new range of larger sharing pasta dishes and secondi, as well as a generous dolci offering. Aperitivi and amari will be served from the feature art deco bar, topped with striking oxblood marble, providing the perfect backdrop for a cosy dinner or special occasion. Masha Rener, head chef, tells us: “With its neighbourhood feel and strong sense of local community, Marylebone Village is the perfect location for us to open both restaurant and delicatessen for the full Lina Stores experience. We can’t wait…” They’re not the only ones! 13-15 Marylebone Lane, W1U (linastores.co.uk)

and redefining what it means to be a successful chef, amongst them, the wonderful Chantelle Nicholson, who recently opened her new restaurant, Apricity, in Mayfair. Here, she shares a delicious seasonal recipe from the book. She says: “Making tarte tatin was one of the first jobs I had to do when I started at The Savoy Grill. I had never made, nor eaten, one before, so it was a wonderful discovery. And apricots have a special place in my heart – I am lucky enough to have eaten the best, grown by my family in Central Otago; gently plucked from the tree, sun-ripened and super sweet.”
INGREDIENTS 8 apricots | 50g/13⁄4oz caster sugar | 160g/53⁄4oz all-butter puff pastry | 1⁄2 a piece of star anise | 50g/13⁄4oz butter (kept in the fridge) | créme fraîche, to serve METHOD 1. Roll out the puff pastry to
3mm/1⁄4in thick, then pop it onto a piece of baking parchment and put it back in the fridge for 20 minutes so the pastry can rest. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 195°C/ 380°F (175°C/350°F fan), remove the butter
from the fridge and halve and destone the apricots. 2. Remove the pastry from the fridge and cut a circle to fit a small, ovenproof saucepan (approximately 12–14cm/5–51⁄2in in diameter). Place the pastry circle back on the baking parchment and return to the fridge. 3. Cut the butter into 4 pieces then press it firmly into the saucepan, using the top part of a clenched hand, into an even layer. Sprinkle over the sugar and shake the pan to distribute it evenly. 4. Grate 2 petals of the star anise onto the sugar. Push the side of one apricot half, skin down, into the sugared butter then lay the rest around the outer part of the pan, covering each other like fallen dominoes and finish with two in the centre. 5. Remove the pastry from the fridge and place on top of the apricots in the very centre of the pan. Cook over a medium-high heat until the butter and sugar begin to bubble and a golden caramel begins to form around the edges of the pastry. Put in the oven for 40–50 minutes, until the pastry is cooked through and golden. Allow to rest for 5–7 minutes before placing a plate on top of the pan, then flip the entire pan over so the tarte tatin slips gracefully onto the plate to be sliced. 6. Serve with créme fraîche and anything else you fancy – ice cream, custard or cream.
With wedding season in full flow, our attention turns to celebration cakes. London bakery Cutter & Squidge offers a tasteful yet seriously tasty number that has all the grandeur of a traditional three-tier affair, but this one is simple, elegant, and thoroughly modern in design. The Three Tier Floral Wedding Cake is 100 per cent vegetarian, halal friendly, and boasts all-natural ingredients. Brides- and grooms-to-be can mix tiers from six delicious flavours including lemon, raspberry, carrot, and even double choc salted caramel, gratifying guests with a particularly sweet tooth. Its chic ivory ruffle frosting acts as the perfect canvas for a floral embellishment of seasonal blooms to complement the wedding flowers and botanical tablescaping theme of the big day – simply speak to a member of the team to discuss your ideas. And if you’re torn on which flavours to choose, there’s a nifty signature sample wedding cake tin on offer, in which six generous slices of the different cakes are showcased – and beautifully presented – all in the name of research. Of course, even the most impressive wedding cakes are nothing without a reliable service. With a million things to think about in the run up to the nuptials, the last thing you want to be worried about is how and when the cake is going to arrive. With Cutter & Squidge’s incredible next-day delivery service, and a fuss-free delivery straight to the venue, it’s all reassuringly seamless – a piece of cake, in fact. THE IMPORTANCE OF CULTURE A cultural calendar underpins everything for children, staff and parents at St. Anthony’s School for Girls
It is indisputable that cultural events play an important role in the advancement of a child’s emotional, cognitive and social development. Recognising their importance, religious festivals, including Advent, Hannukah, Diwali, Lent, Purim, Holi Eid al-Adha and Easter, are marked on St. Anthony’s yearly cultural calendar. Lead by parents, celebration of these significant festivals is viewed as a valuable learning opportunity for the children, and is warmly received by the St. Anthony’s community. At St. Anthony’s Girls and Nursery the intrinsic value of acknowledging these cultural events in a sincere and respectful way is acknowledged. Thanks to this, children gain knowledge and build relationships, cultural heritage is maintained, and a feeling of inclusivity and community is fostered. This was witnessed in March when the children paused to reflect on the origins of Purim, a Jewish holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, an official of the Achaemenid Empire who was planning to have all of Persia’s Jewish citizens killed.
St. Patrick’s Day, an important day of Christian celebration was also marked in school with the children learning the origins of this festival and studying the early life of St. Patrick as the son of a Roman, living on the Welsh coast in the fifth century. The children were not surprised when time was also given to discussing the meaning of ‘Happy Holi’, also known as the Festival of Spring and the Festival of Colours. By following a cultural calendar within the school, the staff acknowledge the rich tapestry of diversity within the school community, ensuring that everybody feels valued and respected. Most importantly, girls are taught to recognise that according to our beliefs, traditions and cultural backgrounds, in all that we do there is more that unites us than segregates us. Situated is a Grade A listed Georgian mansion near the small town of Nairn on Scotland’s northern coast, Boath House will feature bedrooms, two restaurants, a walled garden, and cabins within extensive grounds. The beautiful old building has been transformed by artist and restaurateur Jonny Gent and architect Russell Potter, while the exciting restaurant menus have been curated by chef Florence Knight. A unique new project, Boath House is intended to be a retreat for creatives: a remote sanctuary built on the pillars of art, food, music and supplies. Or, as the trio describe it, “a bolthole in the woods for the lost artist to start again.” Art and expression will be integral here, with a handpicked selection of multi-disciplinary artists, writers, chefs and musicians taking up residence in the house and grounds. A GREEKEND IN ATHENS With Greece having dropped all of its Covid travel restrictions last month, now’s the time to pay a flying visit WORDS by BECKY POMFRET
O
h how I’ve missed the rush of new sights, sounds and experiences that come with a city break. So much more than mere respite from the everyday, those few days away offer a chance to reboot the mind and soul. And with only 48 hours to explore, every glorious moment counts (there’s always time to sleep on the plane home, after all). Having been deprived of such adventures over the past couple of years, an invitation for a three night ‘Greekend’ in Athens is snapped up. It is, remarkably, only my second time in the country; my first ever visit was to Crete, last summer. It was a holiday that saw me drawing up a list of other Greek locations I’d like to visit; Athens had been vying for top spot. Often passed through on the way to jump on a ferry to a Greek Island, I’d been urged not to overlook this bustling, noisy, colourful, dynamic, cultured city, with all of its magnificent history. I didn’t need telling twice… We are staying at one of Athens’ newest luxury hotels, the 5* Gatsby Athens, which opened its doors for the first time last autumn and is already making its mark. Paying homage to the art deco era, the building, formerly a police holding station that lay empty for many years, has been totally renovated in an effortlessly elegant style. Historic buildings in Athens are required to retain classical L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

and period features, so renowned Greek architecture firm WOA had a challenge on their hands. The shell remains much as it was when it was built in the 1930s, though plenty of greenery has been added to the exterior, in line with urban regulations. Where changes have been made, they marry seamlessly with the original features, like the marble that now accents the staircase, sourced from the same mountain as that which was used on the Acropolis. The interiors make the most of the glamour of the era; brushed gold and blush pink feature heavily – my room has a pink and gold-tiled bathroom that feels movie star-ready. The team at interior design firm Michaelis Boyd, whose signature style is instantly recognisable from The Bloomsbury in London, have pulled together a casual and very cool vibe. The lobby leads to a restaurant serving brunches, afternoon tea and cocktails. Judging by the fashionable crowd here, it has clearly already become a go-to spot for locals as well as guests. On our arrival we are offered a mojito mastiha,
a local twist on the classic mojito, created with mastic liqueur from the island of Chios. Sharing plates are passed around; massive feta salads and moussaka croquettes (which are divine). Everything agreeably washed down with a very good local rosé wine, we retreat to our rooms to freshen up before we head out to explore Athens. With its luxurious bathroom, and a huge, supercomfy bed, it’s tempting to stay put in my room, but once I’ve unpacked and checked out the view from the Juliette balcony, I’m ready to don my trainers and hit the streets. Top tip, the best way to see Athens is on foot, and to say the pavements are a little uneven would be an understatement, so pack footwear accordingly. We meet up with our guide, artist Niko, on a street-art tour run by Alternative Athens, a unique tour company that offers a way to see the city in a new light. We visit

neighbourhoods outside of the classic tourist zones and see some incredible street art, learning how each piece relates to the current social and economic situation in Athens. Riot Dog is a particular favourite: a huge image of a stray dog who became a Greek folk hero after participating in anti-austerity protests in 2011. We end our tour in graffiti-central, Psiri, where we perch on high stools to drink powerful gin and tonics at Kalimeres Bistro. We embark on a very different tour the following morning, after a much-needed lie-in and a delicious breakfast of avocado and eggs on toast. This time, it’s Vassia’s turn to guide us through the pretty streets, all the way up to the Acropolis (with one swift detour into a tiny Byzantine church, incongruously positioned in the main shopping district). We learn all about the Theatre of Dionysus and take hundreds of photos of the Temple of Athena Nike and, of course, the Parthenon. Standing in the shade of these ancient buildings, the myths Vassia is retelling seem to spring to life – stories about Gods and Heroes, like main man Zeus; Athena, Goddess of Wisdom and protector of Athens; Poseidon, God of the Sea; and Dionysus, God of Wine (of whom I am a big fan). It’s quite a climb up to and then around the Acropolis, so it’s with some relief that our next stop is for lunch. A noisy fish market is not quite the al fresco location we are expecting, but Hasapika, a Peruvian-Japanese restaurant, is not your average experience. With huge platters of sushi, massive plates of crayfish ravioli, and jugs of crisp white wine that seem to magically refill themselves, it’s a wonder we’re not still there now. Run by three friends who look like they should be on stage with The Foo Fighters, it’s a unique find and well worth a visit. One much-needed siesta later and we’re off out again – whoever said New York is the city that never sleeps has clearly never been to Athens. We start in an elegant manner, with cocktails on Cloud 9, Gatsby’s pretty roof terrace, which is complete with comfy sofas, views of the Acropolis and an open fire. By contrast, a few hours later we find ourselves stage-side, inches away from a crazy cabaret of scantily clad dancers in a club called The Box. Their famous Bouzoukia experience offers modern Greek music mixed with impressive light shows and some very interestingly dressed dancers: apparently a typically Athenian Friday night. I stagger through until 2am, discovering the next morning that our Greek hosts left at 6am and yet still look remarkably chipper at breakfast! We take advantage of the hotel’s luxury car service and pay a visit to the nearby Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. Newly constructed and bringing life to a previously neglected area, it’s home to The Greek National Opera and the National Library, and enjoys one of the largest green spaces in Athens. It’s well worth a visit for the spectacular views and the chance to hire a bike, or to sit and watch the impressive fountain displays. Afterwards, we pop up the road
for a spot of envious yacht-spotting at Flisvos Marina, before finding ourselves medicating our sore heads with piña coladas at Bolivar Beach Bar, whilst dipping our toes into the Med. Dinner that evening is at Birdman – a Japanese grill serving outstandingly good yakitori and dry-aged yakinikustyle meats cooked in an open kitchen on a robata grill. The Iberico pulled pork sando is so good that I’d fly back to Athens in a heartbeat to try it again. Back at base, a small issue with my previous room sees me upgraded to the ‘party suite’. Situated next door to the roof-top bar, it boasts a hot tub on its private terrace (and partition doors that can be opened if you want to hire out Cloud 9 and throw a party). All the rooms at Gatsby have one common feature: a mystery ‘dare’ button. Entirely fitting with the hotel’s hedonistic vibe and the seductive photography and artwork on display, it is a unique quirk that adds a little intrigue to the stay. On this, the last night, I pluck up the courage
59

to press the button. What happened, you ask? You’ll have to book a stay and try for yourself if you really want to know… It is with some regret that we descend to breakfast for the very last time the next morning. The warm and personal service is so attentive that our orders have been remembered from previous days, although I slightly confuse matters by deciding to mix things up and treat myself to a huge stack of fluffy pancakes piled high with blueberries and drenched in maple syrup. The Gatsby has been absolutely perfect – cool and quirky, yet with classical elegance and old school values. Add to that an envious location, glorious rooms, and delicious food and drinks, and it is an absolute must for any Athens trip. Go on, press that button. FINDING YOUR MATCH
With so many to choose from, picking an interior designer can seem a daunting task. A decision that is made all the more difficult because every interior designer has their own unique perspective and style. So, where should you start your search, and what should you be looking for? We put these questions to the experts at interior design studio, Nefarious Design. Read on to discover their top tips: The first place to look is the internet, search for interior designers working in your local area and review their portfolio of works. Look at things like whether their style aligns with your personal tastes and whether the completed projects within their portfolio are similar to the vision you have for your dream home. Social media is also a great tool for reviewing an interior designer’s work, as well as finding out more about their personality – are they a fun, personable company, or a serious, modern firm? You will be spending a lot of time with whoever you appoint, so it is important to choose somebody you can work effectively with. Once the initial research has been completed, we suggest whittling down the perspective companies to a choice of three before starting the interviewing process. At this stage, asking the right questions is key – things like what projects they have worked on, what challenges they have overcome, and how they work within a given budget. And pay attention to whether they are
L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G
16_FabricJUN22_Advertorial - Nefarious_1p.indd 60
asking the right questions about you, your family, your lifestyle and how you intend to use the completed space. Interior design is a long (and sometimes stressful) process, so it’s vital you are able to connect on a personal level. Developing a great relationship and having a good dynamic between yourself and your interior designer ensures that the process is more relaxing and makes the collaborative aspect of interior design more enjoyable – in this way the project should run smoothly. Once you have a sense of the designer’s personality, costings and fees will obviously be an important consideration. As a firm, are their costings for the service within the overall budget? Do their scope of works meet your requirements for the project and do their timelines work with yours? Hopefully these pointers have helped you to take the first steps not just into looking for an interior designer, but also towards creating your dream home. For more information, see nefariousd.com

INTERIORS Briefed with transforming a shaded basement garden in Kensington, Kate Gould created a green space that is lush with foliage. An oasis in the city
W
e’ve asked a lot of our gardens over the last few years. During the various lockdowns they became a veritable sanctuary, and for us city-dwellers in particular, a much-needed extension of our living rooms. Post-pandemic, the trend for blurred indoor/ outdoor spaces continues to spark the imagination. We want creative solutions to our limited patio space or cosy walled terrace that maximise on every square foot. Kate Gould is an award-winning garden designer whose Out of the Shadows entry at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show addressed exactly this. “As we (hopefully) come out of the pandemic, people have certainly become more mindful about creating safe spaces they can hunker down in,” she says. “They are thinking outside the box in terms of what they want their gardens to deliver, and they’re often not sure how to achieve this within a traditional garden model.” Kate offers reassuring advice on incorporating some seemingly over-ambitious garden ideas into a smaller outside space. “I want to show people that if they want a swim spa for example, or a space to do yoga, they don’t need to choose between having that and a beautiful garden. It doesn’t need to be an either/or choice. It’s about coming out of quite narrow, traditional views of what a garden needs to be,” she argues. “It can work on so many different levels and clever design choices can marry up lifestyle needs.” For the garden designer, a well-chosen water feature can bring life to a smaller patch, while incorporating a barbecue or firepit adds an important entertaining element. “The personal elements you choose for your garden are what make it uniquely yours,” she says. “These finishing touches are entirely up to you, and, over time, they will most likely change with fashions and trends. In a small space, every element needs to work hard, often serving a dual purpose.”

“When we design an urban or smaller garden, we look to create a holistic relationship between the indoors and out,” says Mark Latchford, director of landscape design at HollandGreen. “With gardens that have limited area, we aim to maximise and extend the living spaces, bringing the outdoors closer to the house and complementing the interior style and layout of the home. We often create separate zones with their own unique ambiance and usage, bringing a sense of separation and discovery that can actually make a garden feel bigger. For example, spaces for entertaining, relaxation, storage and play areas for children are carefully considered to ensure each space flows cohesively into the next, all brought together with new planting and lighting designs.” He adds
The firepit table creates the perfect centrepiece to the seating area in this garden designed by Kate Gould

“ AS WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE WARMER MONTHS, YOU WILL WANT TO CREATE A SPACE THAT CAN BE ENJOYED DURING THE DAY, BUT ALSO ONE THAT WILL FEEL INVITING AND COSY AT NIGHT” Responding to a client brief, HollandGreen designed this lush green oasis with cleverly thought out lighting and seating areas designed for quiet contemplation
that: “Views out onto the garden are just as important and should feel welcoming to encourage you outside.” The owners of the urban garden shown above wanted to create an oasis of calm. This was achieved through lush green planting and layers of textures set against the tranquil sound of a water feature. With the clever use of lighting, the garden transforms into a magical evening set-up, encouraging the homeowners and their guests to enjoy the space for longer. “We designed a timber and galvanised steel bench beside a garden sculpture as a great spot for contemplation,” says Mark. “A contemporary steppingstone path links each of the elements through the garden, and a featured pod seat is another lovely place to sit on summer evenings. Glazing across the new extension provides ample views out into the garden, making the interior space feel connected to the outdoors.” hollandgreen.co.uk (Photo credit: Ellie Walpole)
Whether you’re doing up a small balcony, roof terrace or a larger patio, shrewd outdoor furniture choices are a must. And there’s a wealth of design-led pieces on offer that will give their indoor counterparts a run for their money, further blurring the lines of inside and out. From cosy L-shaped seating to weatherresistant dining tables, bijou metal bistro sets and standalone hanging egg chairs, you can inject style and personality into your urban garden whilst maximising on space. “As we look forward to the warmer months, you will want to create a space that can be enjoyed during the day, but also one that will feel inviting and cosy at night,” says Claire Hornby, head of creative at Barker & Stonehouse. “I like to layer up garden furniture with cushions and throws that not only look great but make life al fresco a little more comfortable, too. Outdoor bulb lights are great and can help elevate a smaller space, but if you really want to embrace your intimate entertaining area, invest in a firepit. They are a real showstopper and allow you to take advantage of your garden or balcony, season after season.”

KATE GUINNESS
Boldly mixing colour and pattern, this characterful west London terraced home is a lesson in refined English whimsy WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by SEBASTIAN BÖTTCHER
The inviting sofas in the living area were custom made to be extra deep as Kate and her husband are both tall
Kate started her property search ten years ago with an apartment in mind, but when she was shown this Edwardian terraced house, she promptly fell in love. The interior designer had a rotation of flatmates before her husband moved in in 2016. The couple now share the five-bed family home with their three children. Tell me about living and working in west London Shepherd’s Bush is a great place to live, it’s so easy to get anywhere in London and there are lots of young families nearby, which is nice. I’m very lucky to have my studio just around the corner in Notting Hill, one of my favourite areas – so many lovely cafés, restaurants and shops on the doorstep, and I’m a stone’s throw from Portobello Road, which I visit a lot in search of one-off vintage and antique pieces for clients. What do you usually look for in a property? That’s a tricky one, often it’s just a gut feeling rather than a specific feature. As well as having character, I also have to be able to see the property’s potential if it’s something I’m going to be doing work to, taking into account what the spaces will be used for, and by whom. How important is character? Period features, a sense of history? The character of a house is very important to me. One of the things I fell in love with most about this house was the fact that all the original features remained intact and well cared for. When making changes to the property I’ve tried to remain sensitive to them. Having worked on several architecturally and historically important buildings for clients, we always make sure to respect the architectural integrity of each space, adapting our aesthetic to work with the building in question. What structural changes have you made? When I first moved in, I just did up the two existing bathrooms and lived in it for four years without making any other changes. Then in 2016, with a change in occupancy, we decided to do a side return and loft conversion, along with a complete redecoration of the house and damp proofing of the basement, which turned from a horrible damp space into a now much needed laundry room! How would you describe your interiors style? I think one of the main characteristics of my style is creating interiors that feel lived in rather than styled. I also love layering different colours, patterns, artworks and furnishings. My background in set and costume design has no doubt influenced my style, teaching me from the outset to be bold as well as how to create mood and atmosphere in my work. The house feels very naturally put together. Has the look evolved over time? (And how do you achieve this lived-in look for clients?) Yes, my own home has developed gradually over time, which is something we try to achieve for clients, just in a shorter time frame! I love creating spaces with an authentic sense of accumulation by combining antiques, fabrics, colour and art, which allows the personality of our clients to shine through. We work predominantly on residential projects, which tends to mean the client is the homeowner, so we find the most important thing in creating a home is to take into account the patterns and priorities of our clients’ day-to-day lives – the way they use the house and the way they see themselves. It’s important the interiors feel like home and appear to have grown organically.

Tell me about your furniture choices I love sourcing vintage items from all over the place, Adam Bray antiques always has really beautiful and interesting pieces, as does Dorian Caffot de Fawes. We’ve recently bought quite a few items from Howe London and Byron & Gomez, both of whom have timeless collections plus the option of ordering bespoke. Oh, and Collier Webb and PINCH – all handcrafted in England.
Unlacquered brass fittings and bold geometric Bert & May floor tiles make a statement in the small guest bathroom
Can you talk me through a few of your favourite pieces? The dining room chandelier is by Madeleine Boulesteix. Madeleine makes chandeliers and lanterns out of old jelly moulds, teacups and cutlery! They’re completely beautiful as well as being utterly unique. The one in our house combines some old chandelier pieces I bought in a French market when I was 20, along with some jelly moulds and glassware. The sofas in the sitting room were made extra deep as we’re both tall, upholstered in Gainsborough fabric, which I’d developed for a previous project and loved so much I decided to use it again. And the kitchen island is actually a Victorian flower arranging table from Lorfords Antiques, that we made higher by adding to the legs.
Any interesting family heirlooms? What’s the story? The orange velvet armchair in my son’s room belonged to my mum, which she in turn inherited. The velvet is an incredible colour and has so much character where the velvet has worn away in parts. Which is your favourite room? I particularly like the whole of the ground floor because it works so well for a family with small children. In the middle is the kitchen, which is open plan to the dining room at the front and sitting room at the rear. The sitting room has wonderful afternoon light and I love seeing the Tube trains rushing past in the distance. What’s next for Kate Guinness Design? We’ve got lots going on at the moment, we’re working on our own house in Wiltshire, which involves the re-build and conversion of a stable block that had half fallen down. We’re re-building half of it from scratch, converting the other half and joining the two. Two other ongoing projects are complete refurbishments of large Kensington family homes, which have involved everything from structural work to choosing tea towels and everything in between! We also have a few smaller projects ongoing, including a house in Wales, which is in the most incredible setting and which we’re doing work to gradually, a few rooms per year, as it is mostly rented out for holidays. kateguinness.co.uk

EXPANDING HORIZONS As North Bridge House Prep School prepares to welcome children from Reception age, Penelope Lee, Assistant Head, tells us what the change means for the school
What will the new facilities look like? Our innovatively designed Early Years and KS1 facilities will provide multifunctional internal and external teaching spaces, and the children’s very own rooftop science garden will afford them the opportunity to learn and play amongst nature, facilitating the continuation of the curriculum outdoors.
Tell us about North Bridge House Prep School and how its expansion has come about? North Bridge House Prep School has a longstanding reputation for providing a fully rounded, ‘Outstanding’ education, and is renowned for its impressive track record of 11+ and 13+ exam results. Pupils are prepared for the school best suited to their individual strengths, character, and interests, including many of the country’s leading senior school destinations, as well as North Bridge House Senior Schools in Hampstead and Canonbury. Expanding the school to include Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes will bring us in line with other prep schools in the local area, and most importantly, it will allow us to accommodate families with siblings, which is certainly where we see a lot of demand. What is unique about the new Early Years and Key Stage 1 offering at North Bridge House Prep School? Our new Reception curriculum is focused on developing depth of understanding and mastery of concepts from the outset of a child’s education – to take them above and beyond the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and ensure that

17_FabricJUN22_Advertorial - North Bridge House School_1p.indd 70
each stage of their learning journey is seamless with the next. Our pupils will be immersed in an academically rich, well-sequenced Maths, Literacy, and Phonics programme, revisiting units of knowledge explicitly and systematically, to enhance their learning across the curriculum. Children will benefit from specialist teaching in Art, Drama, French, Music and Sport, and a wealth of outdoor learning opportunities will develop the soft skills that aid higher cognitive abilities, such as critical thinking and information processing. With language being the foundation of thinking and learning, we will focus our children’s learning around holding quality conversations in a languagerich environment, prompting them to share their ideas through a wide range of evidenceinformed approaches. Our KS1 programme is ultimately designed to stretch pupils further than in a typical junior school setting and prepare children for progression to an increasingly broad and knowledge-rich KS2 curriculum. We redefine the teaching and learning of humanities, treating Geography and History as discrete subjects rather than combined topics, and introduce Critical Thinking as well as Philosophy, Politics and Economics in Year 3, encouraging our pupils to remain life-long learners.
How does the new Early Years and KS1 programme prioritise children’s wellbeing and character development? By providing a supportive classroom climate, which builds a sense of connectedness, focus and purpose; recognising our children’s emotions; providing warm relationships and celebrating the differences between us. The health and happiness of our pupils is very much at the forefront of education. As well as a comprehensive PSHE curriculum, we prioritise opportunities for language acquisition, development of self-agency and understanding how to self-regulate one’s emotions, so that our children can communicate clearly and know themselves and others in the context of a cohesive community. We also provide staff training and parent workshops with a mental health expert, establishing a collaborative relationship between the school and home. In knowing our children and developing resilience in them, we can help them to cope with predictable life changes and transitions, whilst keeping abreast of the new challenges being posed all the time by our everchanging world. Extra-curricular activities also play a huge part in the personal growth and character development of our pupils, and a diverse range of after school clubs provide a wide breadth of experiences beyond the curriculum. In the Early Years, pupils will be able to enjoy everything from ballet and yoga to gardening and chess, while fencing, architecture and the Climate Change Committee prove particularly popular higher up the school. e all know people who’ve deserted the Capital since the pandemic in search of a better life. But this so-called “exodus” doesn’t appear to have reduced the competition for places at London private schools; if anything, demand has gone up. According to Francis Hamlyn of The Good Schools Guide, a couple of new schools have even opened since the start of the pandemic, thanks to what he calls “the boundless interest in private education in London”. That’s certainly been true of North Bridge House, as the executive head of its senior schools, Brendan Pavey, explains. “We were worried we might see the same knock-on effect as in 2008, when parents viewed private education as a luxury,” he recalls. “But it was the reverse. State school parents in particular started to notice how well our pupils were doing, and we even had applications continue to come through in the summer term and during the holidays of 2020.” Brendan attributes this interest to the school’s swift, comprehensive and commended shift to online learning: within a week of closing, the entire timetable was available through MS Teams. But two years on, demand is still rising, and there continue to be far more applicants than places. (Though Brendan says it’s hard to know exactly how much of the increase is due to the pandemic.)
With competition still hot, then, what advice does Brendan have for parents wanting to win a place for their child? “First, make sure the school is a good fit for them and that they have a good chance of getting in,” he suggests. “Talk to their primary or prep school teacher and think carefully about the entry criteria. Then, if they’re coming for an interview, don’t over-prepare them. Let them be themselves, relax and reveal what they’re interested in.” Finally, if you’re thinking of escaping the competition by quitting the capital, Brendan suggests you tread carefully. “London offers a huge variety, from academic hothouses to our lowpressure, high support model,” he says. “If you move somewhere more rural, the only available schools may not suit your child. And if they’re good, the competition for places will be as high as in London. It’s a question of supply and demand.” northbridgehouse.com; goodschoolsguide.co.uk

What makes it different? Every teacher knows every child’s name. This means children feel truly known and valued as individuals. When a child succeeds in any area of school life, teachers know and celebrate with them. How would you describe the atmosphere? As you walk through the school, you’re constantly met by children who are genuinely eager to share their learning. There’s a ‘buzz’, which is a testament to the wholehearted commitment of our teachers to do the best by each and every child. How do you balance your extracurricular activities with the academic side? We have daily after-school clubs, from dance to debating, football to fencing. Our girls can take on a number of these clubs due to our policy of not setting homework. Instead, we have independent study slots within our daily timetable, during which girls complete homework under the supervision of a teacher. This allows our teachers to understand the extent to which a concept can be applied independently. It also means our girls have their evenings to rest, chat about their learning and prepare for the next day. 2 Parkhill Road, NW3 (020 7485 4673; thevillageprepschool.com)

founder, The Birch House I’m an early riser and can often be found at Kensington Leisure Centre doing a 7am HIIT class; occasionally I’ll squeeze in a short run, too, although my feet aren’t what they used to be when I ran the London Marathon back in 2018! I have many memories of torturous hill training in Holland Park. I’d pop a fiver in my sock so I could reward myself with a coffee at the café afterwards! It’s a beautiful park, spread across 54 acres and complete with formal gardens, wooded areas and a children’s playground. It’s even home to Holland Park Opera – one of these days I hope to make it to one of the amazing performances they put on in the park every summer. Most mornings I’m in my studio by 8am. If I’m not working there, I’ll be out fitting curtains, doing measure ups and meeting clients, most of whom are in the immediate vicinity. I feel very lucky to live in such a great area and to get to see inside some truly fantastic homes. I started my business in 2015 after a lifetime of sewing – a skill I was taught by my mum from an early age. I specialise in making handmade bespoke curtains, blinds and soft furnishings, and guide clients through the process from start to finish, including supplying curtain poles and tracks. I work on my own in a studio, with the radio and podcasts for company. I use a lot of fabric from The Cloth Shop, nearby on Portobello Road; it’s a great place for linens and sheer fabrics in particular. Many years ago, I worked in various restaurants on High Street Kensington, and I still enjoy shopping in the area. I recently picked up some amazing martini glasses at TK Maxx. Speaking of cocktails, there’s an amazing new bar called Amaro, which serves brilliant cocktails and food – definitely worth a visit. I’m also often to be found in Decathlon; I love being outdoors, and I particularly enjoy cycling. Often at the weekend I’ll do a few rounds of Hyde Park; we’re so lucky to have so many green spaces, and yet still enjoy such a central location. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. “Residents are spoilt for choice here with an abundance of greenery and parkland walks. The Campden Hill area is home to large red brick portered mansion blocks, which offer spacious lateral apartments, 24-hour security, and in some instances, private parking. South of Kensington High Street offers slightly smaller houses and a little more village feel around Stratford Road.”
Sara Garzelli, Benham & Reeves “Now that UK travel restrictions have been lifted, we’re seeing the return of wealthy international investors to the area, keen to expand their portfolios and making good offers. While property prices are pushing up fast, a realistic market valuation remains essential and accurately priced properties are selling fastest. Value for money is as important as ever, even in this competitive market.” Amaro

“This has always been one of the most desirable areas of central London. But the real beauty of Kensington is that it’s hugely diverse. Yes there are large houses at the upper end of the scale, but the reality is that many budgets are catered for. From townhouses to mansion blocks and the wide variety of period conversions, not to forget the many modern developments to choose from, Kensington really has it all.”

Local market insight from the Buyers’ Agent Deborah Stanton from Garrington Property Finders takes a closer look at the areas of Holland Park and Kensington, and highlights what buyers might expect when navigating the local markets Holland Park and Kensington are two of the most desirable places to live in the capital. Renowned for their striking architecture, tree lined avenues, exclusive communities and garden squares. Properties across these two prime postcode areas are seldom openly advertised for sale with a high percentage of transactions taking place discreetly off-market. Holland Park Holland Park is one of the most sought-after areas in West London. Known for its Japanese Garden, designer stores, historic homes and for being one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods in London. Wide, leafy streets are lined with beautiful large Victorian townhouses, with mews houses tucked away on cobbled streets behind, and iconic Italianate style detached white stucco properties sit on some of the most desired roads, such as those on Holland Park, recognisable for their ornate glass canopies over grand entrance steps. Several conservation areas cover much of Holland Park ensuring the look and feel of the area is maintained. Kensington Well-connected and surrounded by vast green spaces, Kensington is a sophisticated and sought-after area. Famous for its regal connections, museums, Royal Parks and the Royal Albert Hall. Kensington residents enjoy
the number properties available for sale in both Holland Park and Kensington compared to buyers actively searching these markets. An increasing number of properties are reported to have been sold ‘off-market’ over the past 12 months meaning buyers seeking property in these prime London postcodes will often need to gain access to this ‘hidden market’ in order to find a home.
Deborah Stanton
having a broad selection of shopping options on the doorstep along Kensington High Street, and the area also boasts an excellent dining scene with several Michelin starred restaurants and gourmet pubs. Some of London’s most expensive property is in Kensington, with many homes positioned around garden squares, others within red brick, portered mansion blocks. The most sought after addresses in the area include Phillimore Gardens and Argyll Road, where some of London’s finest period architecture can be enjoyed. Accessing the hidden market Whilst there has been a slight increase in properties becoming available for sale, there remains to be a significant imbalance between
How do property finders find off-market homes? The key to a property finder’s success, and more importantly the value they offer to a client, is their contacts and involvement in their local community and surrounding areas. Contrary to popular belief it is not just the local estate agents that contribute to the supply of off-market options provided to property finders. Information regarding properties available to purchase away from the open market can come from all manner of sources including solicitors, tax advisors, gardeners, interior designers, and architects. In situations where a seller only wants to reveal their intention to sell to a select number of people, property finders are usually towards the top of the list to be notified. Whilst finding the right property to purchase in prime areas is likely to remain challenging, it is by no means insurmountable, with the right experience, contacts and access to all options in the market.
Garrington’s consultants help buyers to find and purchase properties that meet their lifestyle requirements. Their local expertise and in-depth knowledge of the property market helps homebuyers to consider a wider choice of properties and purchase more effectively. Local heroes LIFT, W8
With its cool, jet-black exterior, you can’t miss this contemporary coffee hub on Kensington Church Street. Inside you’ll find equally cool industrial chic décor and, according to James Pace from Knight Frank, “simply the best coffee”. Lift opened in 2019 and, pandemic excepting, has gone from strength to double-shot strength, offering coffee loving locals a sanctuary-like spot in which to sit, sip and contemplate. “It’s a lovely team,” says James, “and I understand that they have helped other businesses with advice on where to source coffee, so really helpful, too.” 133 Kensington Church Street, W8 (liftcoffeelondon.com)
THE CHURCHILL ARMS, W8
If you like your pint with a slice of British eccentricity, this is the pub for you. Chris Cady from Dexters says: “The Churchill Arms has a unique exterior decorated with 100 flowerpots, 48 window boxes and 42 hanging baskets! When all the flowers are in bloom it’s truly a sight to see!” But you’d be wise to step inside, too, where you’ll find a wealth of Churchill memorabilia (the connection being that the 1750-built pub was frequented by the wartime prime minister’s grandparents). These days, it’s best loved for serving delicious Thai food and real ales.
119 Kensington Church Street, W8 (020 7727 4242; churchillarmskensington.co.uk)
LOS MOCHIS, W8
Chancellors’ Edward Parker tells us this local eatery is a “vibrant addition to the area. The food is great, and the colourful interior is fantastic”. The pan-Pacific restaurant fuses Mexican and Japanese cuisine, and boasts a creative décor to match. The plates too are as stylish as they are delectable, whether you plump for maki rolls or tacos. Of course, the signature cocktails are flowing here, including the Pink Hot Chilli Paloma. We’d go as far as to say that good times are guaranteed. 2-4 Farmer Street, W8 (020 7243 6436; losmochis.co.uk)
Spread across 54 acres, Holland Park boasts a glorious mix of woodland and formal gardens, including the breathtakingly beautiful Kyoto Garden. A gift from the Japanese city in 1991 to commemorate the longstanding friendship between the two countries, it was designed by renowned landscape architects, who placed a large pond at its centre, fed by a tiered waterfall. With shoals of koi carp swimming in its tranquil waters, the beautiful pond is surrounded by lush native plants and stone lanterns 77

Spring Into Your New Home
If you have children and are hoping to move this year, spring is an ideal time to put your house onto the market as you’ll be likely to move in the summer holidays. The property market tends to pick up prior to the summer holidays. This is mainly due to parents moving out of term time but also moving to change the school catchment that their children are in.

Garden growth
Mark Sumray
In an overcrowded city, outside space soon becomes a luxury – even if that’s a tiny but cherished balcony. It comes as little surprise then, that London properties with gardens sell for a premium. Luxe garden furniture brand Moda Furnishings has gathered and analysed data from a variety of cities across the UK to find out where a garden adds the most value, and sure enough, the Capital comes out on top. On average London houses sell for around £510,000. Moda’s research shows that those with a garden or outdoor space sold at a staggering 250 per cent higher than those without. So, if you’re lucky enough to have a property with a patch, this summer, make sure you’re making the most of it.
Dexters
How long have you been in the business? Most of my life! I’ve been in the property business for 40 years and spent 30 of those working in Highgate. If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… a landscape gardener. I really enjoy being outdoors in nature and have my own vegetable patch at home. I love London because… there’s lots of free culture. From museums to art galleries and one-off exhibitions, London is one of the few cities where you can see a world class masterpiece for absolutely nothing at all.
modafurnishings.co.uk
First London home? My roots are here in north London – my first flat was in Hampstead. Favourite London street? Probably North Hill in Highgate. It has some of the most varied architecture in the country. Where do you go for head space in the city? Whenever I have some free time I like to take my dog for a long walk across Hampstead Heath. It helps me to unwind. Most memorable sale? I sold a block of 26 flats on behalf of the American Embassy. I had a visit to the Embassy to negotiate several deals, which was quite fun. Property pet peeve? Downstairs shower rooms.
ASK THE AGENT
When it comes to attracting buyers, how important is a well-manicured garden?
Favourite architectural style? Arts and Crafts Penthouse or garden flat? Garden flat. My dog doesn’t like heights!
“Outside space, particularly a private garden, has always been a favourite requirement for purchasers, and since the pandemic, for many, it’s become a prerequisite. A well-manicured garden can ultimately be the main selling point of a property, especially during the spring and summer months. If you’re fortunate enough to own a property with a garden, it’s worth making sure it’s looking its best before having the property photographed and commencing viewings.” Sam Gould, Chestertons
