ummer may not officially begin until next month, but we're feeling positive that we’ll see some sun before then. And with that in mind, we’ve been focusing our interiors attentions outside, by looking at clever ways to break the boundaries between home and garden (which comes with the added advantage of allowing you to feel like you’re outside, even when the weather doesn’t allow it). We’re also hoping to get outside and enjoy the best that London in the sunshine has to offer, including the start of the season at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and some pretty special outdoor yoga sessions in Hyde Park. Of course, if the weather does keep you indoors, you could do worse than spend time catching up on Line of Duty. See what star of the show Martin Compston has to say in our exclusive interview.

8-12 May | Various locations During the course of five days, visitors to this eclectic fair will have the chance to enjoy a jampacked roster of exhibitions, demonstrations, talks and workshops. This year, the spotlight is on elite craftmanship, exploring the myriad places that it can be found – from the engine of a Rolls-Royce Phantom to the carved medieval stones of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The festival is a platform for artists and makers in every sector, so you could find yourself taking part in a workshop run by ceramicist Matthew Raw at the Barbican Centre or listening to a talk about embroidery with artist Celia Pym. We’ve earmarked some time to go and see sculptor Lucille Lewin in her home studio as she talks with Rakesprogress magazine. (londoncraftweek.com)

here are two things that even the most die-hard Line of Duty fans might not know about Martin Compston, who plays DS Steve Arnott. Firstly, that he used to play football professionally, and secondly, that he was born and bred in Greenock, Scotland. Fooled by that London accent? You’re not the only one. It was, apparently, honed through hours of listening to podcasts while walking the dog; but how does he keep it up? “It can be tough,” Martin admits. “There is so much jargon, and you really have to be on top of the dialogue because Jed [Mercurio, who writes the show] can suddenly change lines, so you really need to know your stuff. But, as much as it can be a hindrance, an accent can be like a good costume, you know? As soon as I do that voice, I hear Steve.”

While Line of Duty might not be the big screen, it is big news. When the first episode of series five –which has been moved from BBC2 to BBC1 this year – screened last month, it was watched by 7.8 million viewers, making it not just the most-watched episode in the history of this police drama, but the most-watched show of 2019 so far. Martin says he had no idea that things would get this big. “I thought that the scripts were phenomenal and looking at the people they were getting involved, I thought it would be good, but I didn’t think that it would be a hit commercially… The storylines are quite complicated, and I didn’t know whether people would stick with it.” Stick with it they have, and Martin thanks his lucky stars that he is playing a part in the show’s success story. “When I got offered Line of Duty,

wife, American actress Tianna Chanel Flynn, in Las Vegas. “We were just over four months filming the last series, with rehearsals and stuff beforehand. It’s not like I can just nip over for the weekend when I have a bit of a break, so it’s tough,” he tells me. “But you just realise that you need to focus on the job.” This particular cloud has a silver lining, because being in the UK does allow him to spend time with friends and family back in Scotland: “I can go to Greenock, and see my folks and all the friends who are still there, so it’s not too bad,” he grins. And then there’s being able to watch his beloved football team in action – Martin is a huge fan of Celtic F.C. – which brings us back to the question of what exactly persuaded him to ditch the pitch in favour of a career in front of the cameras?

“I remember sitting in Leicester Square and watching, and thinking: one day I would love to have a premiere here – and I have been lucky enough to have a couple there now”

I’m catching up with Martin while he’s in London promoting the latest series. He may no longer live here, but he is very pleased to be back. “It is a great city, there is just always something going on. One of my favourite places in the world is Soho in the summer. I love people watching – just sitting outside the Groucho on Dean Street with a wee glass of wine and watching people go by. I remember, one of the first times I came to London was to visit my cousin when I was about 17, and I remember sitting in Leicester Square and watching, and thinking: one day I would love to have a premiere here – and I have been lucky enough to have a couple there now. That is a great buzz,” he says, smiling broadly.

I got offered a film role at the same time,” he tells me. “At one point the schedules were clashing; I was leaning towards the film (if it came to one or the other), but luckily they made it work that I could do both. I do have the odd nightmare moment where I think: what if ? You know? That would have been devastating if this thing was going on for so long and it wasn’t me that was playing Steve Arnott.” It is, he says, his favourite role to date, and he considers the work he has done on Line of Duty to be among his best. “I do love playing Steve,” he nods. “But I think a lot of that is to do with having such a fun time on the set with the guys.” It certainly makes up for having to spend months on end away from his home and his

“Because I wasn’t really a very good footballer!” he laughs. “You know, I loved the time I spent playing, and I don’t want to be negative about these things, but it was playing Scottish First Division football, and I think that was probably the highest I was ever going to get. I am 34 at the minute, and I am still a relatively young actor, but I would be coming to the end of my career as a footballer. I was never going to get to play for Celtic – if I could’ve done that, then maybe it would’ve been different.” In 2002, having never acted before, Martin successfully auditioned for the lead role in Ken Loach’s Sweet Sixteen. He was consequently nominated for, and won, the Most Promising Newcomer award at the British Independent

INTERVIEW

Film awards. How did it all come about? “I have always loved films, but I never really thought about it seriously,” he tells me. “A big moment for me was when I saw My Name is Joe by accident. I was on a double date with a pal of mine, and I can’t remember what we were actually planning to see – I think probably some big franchise film – but that was the only thing that we could get into. And it just changed the whole way that I viewed cinema, because I could see on this big screen people who spoke like me, and I could recognise the characters. And then, the very next year, Ken Loach was casting at my school for the follow-up, and it was just maybe a bit of fate. If I had never seen that film, I would never have thought of going. As it was, I thought: I loved that film; I can do it.” Though his CV is testimony to his success

over the years, that early bravado at audition has abandoned Martin somewhat. “It is terrifying. I mean, I have been doing it for 16 or 17 years now, and if anything, it just gets worse! It’s a very hard thing to have to walk into a room full of people judging you,” he explains. “And it can be a buzz when it goes well, but it can be a real downer. You really work for it. You can spend days and days on something and then not hear anything back. That can be quite frustrating… You realise that you just need to get up and get on with the next one because you will get rejected a lot more than you get accepted in this industry. That’s a fact. You will lose a lot more jobs than you get.” In terms of his tally of jobs lost to jobs won recently, Martin couldn’t be happier. “It’s been a good year: a couple of decent films out, the

show is going well…” he grins. “And I have got a couple of scripts in at the minute that I really, really like, so hopefully that will come together, but I’m a wee bit superstitious until the deal is signed and sealed,” he tells me, refusing to give any further details. What about Steve, will we be seeing more of him? “There has been another series commissioned, but we don’t know who will actually make it to series six, you know?” he tells me. Is he hinting that DS Arnott may fall foul of the Balaklava Gang before the end of the current series? “Anybody can go at any time,” he shrugs. “But Line of Duty will be there for sure for series six.” If you know the answer to that one, don’t spoil it for the rest of us! Style& wellbeing WE LOVE

Boutique by Shelter As we become more aware of the impact of our own consumption, caring has, finally, become cool. More independent designers are choosing to make quality clothing using ethically-sourced materials, and there’s been a societal shift in attitudes to second-hand clothing, too, with charity shop revenue up by more than five per cent (while general retail figures fall). Pre-loved has never been more in fashion. We couldn’t be more excited about the latest opening at Coal Drops Yard. Sitting comfortably alongside the likes of Wolf & Badger and Paul Smith, Boutique by Shelter is a charity shop with a difference. Featuring a handpicked range of unique donations – from designer and vintage, to quality high-street clothing – and a bespoke interior by HemingwayDesign (which incorporates reclaimed materials) the charity’s new flagship boutique store offers a shopping experience like no other. With everything priced at a fraction of the original cost, and every donation raising vital funds to fight homelessness, this deserves to be one of this year’s most talked-about openings. David Cryer, director of retail at Shelter, says: “In a world where people are increasingly buying more sustainably, our boutique is leading the charity retailer revolution.” Unit EV8, 1st Floor, Coal Drops Yard, Stable Street, N1C (020 3725 9439; england.shelter.org. uk/support_us/shops/kings_cross_boutique)

STYLE & WELLBEING

Facing the future

Raw Pilates

W

hen time is of the essence, I’m usually more of a cardio or nothing girl, favouring high impact classes that will make me sweat. But my poor old bones are feeling that impact, and friends in the know clamour to inform me that Pilates is likely to be the answer to my niggles (not to mention being the ultimate all-over body conditioning exercise, too). I’ve done my fair share of mat Pilates classes in the past, and I’m game to give it another go – not least because I’d like to check out Raw Pilates, north London’s newest studio. Though it may be set in the rather lovely surrounds of The Laboratory Spa & Health Club, it is very much open to non-members, so I book in for an hour-long one-to-one session with Kate. The stylish studio is small and intimate – I am the only one there on a Tuesday lunch time – and equipped with every conceivable piece of Pilates kit, all of it top of the range. Kate and I have a quick chat, during which we set some goals and she introduces me to the various equipment available to us. We start on

the table, a sort of raised bed, so that Kate can see how my body moves (answer: not always in the way it should!). Through a series of seemingly simple exercises, using the various springs and straps on the table, we work our way from top to toe, concentrating largely on my core. Although everything sounds easy in principle, and appears to be straightforward movements of arms, legs and body, I find myself struggling, and I have soon worked up a sweat. We move on to the reformer, the tower and the chair – I really get my money’s worth with Kate – until every inch of my body has been worked out and stretched to its limit. I’m exhausted, but I feel much more in tune with my body and its quirks, and I can’t wait for my next session – although my enthusiasm wanes a couple of days later when the delayed onset muscle soreness sets in. Still, I reason, that is a better sign than anything that we’ve done some seriously good work. LSJ A single private lesson costs £65. More than two decades ago, Perricone MD was created by Dr. Nicholas Perricone, whose New York Times bestseller The Wrinkle Cure introduced the world to the benefits of an antiinflammatory lifestyle. A holistic, threetiered anti-inflammatory skincare and wellness system, the “cure” consists of diet, essential dietary supplements and potent topical skincare solutions, which incorporate some of the most powerful ingredients on the planet. We’ve long been fans, but all the more so since the brand had its own facelift earlier this year. Now focusing solely on the age 40 plus consumer seeking serious skincare solutions that work (hallelujah!), the product portfolio has been revamped, product names simplified and packaging streamlined. The best way to discover the best products for your skin is to book in for a signature facial. Using advanced lifting and sculpting techniques, alongside the patented skin treatments, the facial is bespoke and based on your skin and its health. And the best bit? The £45 booking fee can be redeemed against two or more products afterwards. Facials are available at John Lewis Oxford Street between 9-12 May and Harrods between 26 May-1 June. Buttermilk chicken shish kebab

W

ith its bonanza of bank holidays, May has us dusting off the barbecue. This year, eschewing burnt burgers for something more sophisticated, Josh Katz, the chefowner of Exmouth Market’s Berber & Q Shawarma Bar, shares this recipe from his first book, Berber & Q (£25, Ebury Press). He says: “Shish kebab is commonplace to all the cuisines across the Levant and Middle East. Most will use breast meat, which is lean but lacks the juiciness and flavour of thigh meat. I use thigh meat, but feel free to use whichever you prefer.” METHOD

For the buttermilk chicken shish Put the buttermilk, spices, garlic, oil, hot red pepper paste, lemon zest and juice, salt, pepper and onion in a bowl and stir together to combine. Add the chicken pieces to the marinade and massage the mixture into the chicken to ensure it’s evenly distributed and well coated. Cover the bowl and leave in the fridge for 4–6 hours or preferably overnight. To finish the chicken Skewer the chicken pieces intermittently with the red and green pepper and the red onion. Set a barbecue up ensuring that you are cooking on mediumhot embers. Grill the skewers directly over the burning coals, turning frequently to ensure both sides are well coloured

and the chicken is cooked all the way through when checked with a knife (or to an internal temperature of 70°C or above when probed with a thermometer). Brush the pitas or flatbreads with a little olive oil mixed with a few drops of water, and warm through briefly on the grill. They can be placed directly on top of the skewers if there isn’t sufficient room on the barbecue. To garnish and serve Remove the pitas and transfer to a serving platter. Place the skewered chicken thighs atop, brushed with olive oil. Scatter the spring onion and oregano leaves liberally over the skewers, along with the lemon pickle. This kebab is great served with garlic sauce, slaw and pickles of choice.

INGREDIENTS For the buttermilk chicken shish 100ml buttermilk ½ tsp ground cumin ¼ tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp sweet paprika ¼ tsp ground cinnamon 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 tbsp garlic oil or olive oil 1 tbsp hot red pepper paste (biber salçası) grated zest and juice of 1 lemon

Psst… Barrafina fans will be excited to hear of another new opening. Parrillan, a terrace bar and grill restaurant with a difference will open at Coal Drops Yard on 10 May. Guests will be provided with their own mini charcoal grills, or parrillas, allowing them to cook cuts of meat, fish and vegetables at the table. The menu has been designed by Barrafina’s executive chef, Angel Zapata Martin, and is inspired by his favourite Ibicencan restaurant, Ca’n Pilot, where he used to eat when working as a private chef on the island. The space has been designed by Andy Martin Architecture, with a nod towards Mediterranean terraces, while staying true to its location. Steel beams and a highly technical glass roof with classic

timber shading beneath reference the industrial surroundings, while marble tables, iroko wood chairs and planted banquettes sit in an urban garden of mature olive trees, Mediterranean herbs and traditional Mallorcan ikat fabrics. Co-founder Sam Hart says: “Completing the final piece of Harts Group’s Coal Drops Yard jigsaw, Parrillan’s table-top grills will enable Angel to develop a great new way of eating out in London.” We think it's guaranteed to be one of the hottest openings this summer. ith a CV that includes two Michelinstarred restaurants (Murano and Galvin La Chapelle, since you ask) and the job of head chef at Babbo aged just 26, Carlo Scotto’s culinary credentials are impeccable. Which is why we were so excited to be sampling the 10-course tasting menu at Xier, his first solo venture. We were not disappointed. Billed as “modern European with global influences,” Xier’s menu finds its cues in countries as diverse as Peru and the Philippines, taking in Scandinavia and Japan along the way. But there was nothing random about the exquisitely presented dishes that arrived at our table. True, the pairings were bold – salmon and foie gras, red prawns and raspberries – but the flavours were always perfectly balanced. The Scandi influence is evident in the cool grey and neutral tones of the décor in the upstairs dining room, which is only open in the evenings for the tasting menu. And it was echoed in the shot of pine, lemon, mint and cucumber water we were offered as a palate cleanser.

The tasting menu kicked off in style with a glass of Canard-Duchêne Champagne that formed the perfect counterpoint to honeydrizzled stracciatella with wild strawberries. A trio of starters included red prawn crudo with red caviar and yuzu; beurre noisette gnocchi served with warm kombu tea and rosecured salmon boldly partnered with beetroot dusted foie gras – a real crowd-pleaser. There was a nod to food as theatre, too: beetroot and goat’s cheese macarons on liquid nitrogen — a dish that begged to be photographed. The fish courses were just as impressive: red mullet with the wondrously named leche de tigre (a Peruvian marinade) and a melt-in-themouth black cod in caramel miso. Beef cheek and pigeon followed, the former deliciously unctuous, the latter cooked to pink perfection. A seriously chocolately dessert selection, with a hint of rhubarb, brought the meal to a close. My kitchen heroes are… Keith Floyd, Rachel Humphrey and Heston Blumenthal. My fail-safe dinner party menu is… a one pot wonder. I'd brown cubes of lamb shoulder, then add garlic, onions and red peppers, with mild spices like cinnamon, paprika, cumin and coriander. Then deglaze with white wine, add water and dried fruits and let it simmer gently for a couple of hours. My last meal on earth would be… an Iberico ham and tomato sandwich – a massive one. I’d use a whole baguette, served warm and slathered in olive oil, and accompanied by a really cold beer, or two. ith its 300-metre-long stretch of private, sunset-facing beach – the only nontidal beach on the island and arguably the best stretch of sand on the Tanzanian archipelago – there’s no denying that Zuri Zanzibar is a little slice of paradise found. Zanzibar’s newest hotel, designed by Jestico + Whiles, offers accommodation in 55 luxurious stilted villas, set against a dramatic cliff backdrop. Add to that a mouthwatering food and drink offering, soporific spa facilities and a varied activity programme, and it all tots up to an irresistible five-star proposition, but where the resort really shines is its dedication to sustainability. From using locally sourced building materials, to implementing energy-saving initiatives and focusing on using organic, local produce in the restaurants, each element of the resort has been carefully considered. Zuri Zanzibar is also leading a number of local community programmes including providing wells around Kendwa, helping to construct local schools and leading a tourism training project to help locals to find work in the hotel and hospitality sectors. And it is because of all of this, that within a year of opening, it has just become the first hotel in the world to be awarded EarthCheck’s Sustainable Design Gold certification for its environmental, social and economic design and construction principles. SEDUCED BY SEVILLE From winding medieval streets to sweaty flamenco clubs off the beaten track; culinary delights to awe-inspiring architecture, there’s so much to explore in Spain's sunniest city by Ali Howard

ust as London’s tourists cannot resist a photo opportunity with a red phone box, here, for us, it’s the orange trees. We’ve been longing for that Andalusian glow, and the moment we arrive in Seville, we’re sat outside a café on a tree-lined street, cerveza in hand, soaking it all up under the exotic vegetation. The sun is shining for us as we meander through the buzzy city streets, dodging trams and bikes on the way to our first of two hotels. You can’t miss Alfonso XIII, a building of jaw-dropping magnificence on Calle San Fernando, a major thoroughfare that leads down to the sparkling river Guadalquivir. The handiwork of architect José Espiau y Muñoz, the hotel was built at the behest of King Alfonso

himself, to host international dignitaries at the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. These days it’s more likely to host Hollywood A-listers, such is its reputation as Seville’s finest. The hotel is literally palatial and we’re pinching ourselves before we even set foot inside the grand lobby with its marbled floor, imposing tiled arches and Moorish chandeliers. The interior is as deco-fabulous as it is north African-influenced – proof that in architecture you can never really escape your time – not that you’d want to here: the curved marble steps are quintessentially 1920s while traditionally-crafted Moroccan lamps in shiny silver hang down on chains. It is a heady mix. Travel-weary, we’re keen to check in forthwith, but we’re sorely tempted by the possibility of an upgrade to a grand deluxe room with a terrace – if only we can wait an hour or so for staff to prepare. We momentarily forget we’re on Spanish time. Of course, nothing’s a rush here and we figure we can manage a couple more cervezas under the orange trees. It only adds to the anticipation. When we do finally make it to our regal room, we laugh at how on earth we could have entertained turning this down. It is an utterly

Our own private terrace, complete with patio furniture and sun loungers, is the size of a London studio flat. With its terracotta tiling and twisted iron railings ornamented with arabesque gilded turrets, it is a resplendent sun trap and captures the Andalusian glow perfectly. And we were right to pinch ourselves: from here, through the palm trees, we have panoramic views of the city with the majestic Cathedral of St. Mary of the See straight ahead. It is indeed a sight to behold and it’s hard not to feel a spiritual flutter in the

presence of such glory. From the ornate interior detailing (a ride in the magnificent multi-mirrored lift is a must), to the exceptionally thoughtful five-star service (breakfast in the central courtyard is a dream), Alfonso XIII maintains its status as fit for nobility. A stay here is treat for those of us with less than aristocratic blood, then. But it wouldn’t be complete without a local tour from Mimo Sevilla, an affiliated cooking school and gourmet shop ideal for visiting foodies wishing to immerse themselves in Seville’s culinary culture. We plump for an evening tapas and flamenco-themed jaunt into the district of Triana, the true home, we discover, of the impassioned musical genre. We take in the sights of the historic naval college and the Torre del Oro (Seville’s imposing 13th century watchtower) all the while expertly narrated by our knowledgeable guide Aldara. Over the river we can hear the fervent thrum of flamenco shoes as locals practise their craft before we head to our first of many tapas bars. We get our fill of rich, delectable bites washed down with the finest local vino tinto before hurrying into Teatro Flamenco, arguably the best (read: most authentic, least touristy) flamenco theatre school in Seville. We sit front row of the diminutive toy-like auditorium in front of thick blue velvet curtains and cannot help but snigger at its perfectly Lynchian Surrealism. The hour-long show is a rollercoaster of high-octane drama fiercely performed by just four artists, with such skilled musicianship and deft dance moves, it’s as if their lives depend on it. All improvised content, the show is seriously impressive and we can understand why Aldara wanted us to experience real flamenco, this side of the river. As we wipe the dancers’ sweat from our own brows (we’re that close), we shuffle out of the auditorium more than a little bit stunned and newly in love with Seville, yes, but more specifically Triana.

It is time for a change of scene and so from David Lynch to Stanley Kubrick, we head up the river to Barceló Sevilla Renacimiento, the second of our luxury stays and a five-star hotel that couldn’t be further in aesthetics from the former. Modelled after New York’s modernist masterpiece, the Guggenheim Museum, Renacimiento, with its trio of interlocking circular buildings and stacked curvy interior, recalls, too, the visual style of 2001: A Space Odyssey – a mid-century design lover’s dream. We’re slightly out of town here (albeit not at all by our London standards), and suddenly there’s space. The vast entrance lobby is overlooked by an imposing central structure of swooping curves – the corridors holding some 295 spacious and light-filled rooms. The modernist look continues with in-room décor interior designed to complement the arresting architecture: think clean lines and funky furniture pieces with a distinct mid-century edge. On arrival, we are blinded with Sevillian sunshine from our suite’s expansive floor-toceiling windows and can’t help but fall back onto our sumptuous king-sized bed to soak it all up. But there’s so much more to explore here, including an indulgent indoor/outdoor heated pool, and to do that we must travel in retrofuture pods that seemingly float from floor to floor: evidently Seville hotels boast a strong elevator game. We spend the rest of our visit in and out of tiny tapas bars we find off the beaten track; we ogle at the majesty of the jewel-encrusted Virgen de la Esperanza de Macarena; we take in the drama of the Plaza de España; and we find yet more orange trees to sit under, as we sip, and bask in that special Andalusian sunshine. We’d bottle it up if we could. It really does glow. his west London garden (top) has been transformed into a sleek contemporary courtyard space that plays with height and differing levels, making the most of its limited footprint. Designer Charlotte Rowe has essentially created another room with raised beds and bench seating built up around the water rill. A sunken patio offers the perfect entertaining spot, allowing dinner guests to spill out post-feast, while cleverly positioned outdoor stair lights reflect those on the ceiling above, framing the kitchen. Tonally, the indoor/ outdoor divide is invisible with the kitchen’s pale limestone flooring repeated outside. And when the party’s over, discreet bi-fold patio doors effortlessly slide across. Architect-designed new homes and extensions that playfully subvert conventions of indoor and outdoor space are on the rise. More and more, homeowners want a fluidity in their property that not only brings the outside in, but which allows living spaces to seamlessly flow out into the garden, too. Here are some of the best boundary breakers to inspire by Ali Howard

fabricmagazine.co.uk

As part of an extensive remodelling of an existing detached house, west London architects Waind Gohil + Potter engineered a beautiful bronze baffle to frame and shade the glazed rear of the property (left). In doing so, they successfully blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor space, using an earthy, natural material in the build, while protecting the glass from the heat of the sun’s glare. In stark contrast to the rest of the red brick house, this bold sculptural addition is designed to be admired from the garden with its perfectly level lawn – in itself a boundary breaker, being so carpet-like. A modern glass box extension brings homeowners closer to nature. As popular on a period property as they are complementing the angular lines of a contemporary new build, for many, it’s the ultimate in inside/outside living. This ambitious west London project (previous page) saw a complete refurbishment by UV Architects, including a basement excavation, double-height rear extension and loft conversion, allowing the firm free rein to play with levels and light. Here, the kitchen extends out into a chic glass box with doors opening onto the patio. Ingeniously, a skylight belonging to the storey below acts as a further light-loving side of the box, inviting daylight down. UV Architects (020 7407 9343; uvarchitects.co.uk) Outdoor furniture that mimics its indoor counterparts is a huge trend for SS19, further blurring the boundaries between inside and out. The owners of this Hampstead new build (right) enlisted local interior design company Black & Milk to inject their developer-bought home with personality. Part of that brief was creating a living room set-up in the patio space to allow for the garden to become a proper place to relax in. Carefully zoned, complete with an L-shaped sofa, coffee table, large floor vase and rocking armchair, it makes for a cosy extra living room, free from the conventions of the usual four walls. (020 3417 4884; blackandmilk.co.uk) The London Tile Co. offers flooring that’s as comfortable in a patio space as it is beautifying the kitchen. Their Valverdi Portico IndoorOut collection of grey-blue slate tiles offers a chic textured finish in durable stone that works for projects of both architectural and landscaping nature. But when laid side by side with just a glass wall defining inside and outside space, the tiles really come into their own. In this ultramodern extension (below) the kitchen and patio merge beautifully, drawing the eye out into the garden, or back into the house, depending on perspective. This creates the illusion of a larger footprint, with clean, uninterrupted lines. From £34.14 per sq m (0333 320 80 48; londontile.co.uk)

AT HOME WITH

Melinda Marquardt Textiles and wallpaper designer by Ali Howard

T

he founder of luxury wallpaper and fabrics brand The Vale London shows us around her bright and modern onebed duplex, which functions as both home and studio. The apartment is filled with homely furniture pieces and quirky wallcoverings, mixing cosy accents of nature-inspired textures with unique travel finds. For Melinda, Scandichic was a little too austere for her liking. Instead, she’s gone for her own take on the trend: Scandi-maximalism – a look that’s bursting with personality. How does the apartment work as both a home and creative studio? I really wanted two floors so I could split my work-life balance. Most of the daytime I spend in my studio on the ground floor, overflowing with swatches of fabric and new drawings. But upstairs is dedicated ‘life’ space – my bedroom takes up most of the upper floor, and I’ve popped a chaise longue and extra seating into the room to make it more versatile. I’ve also created a photoshoot space in the entrance hall, where I capture my latest designs and products, ready to be uploaded straight to Instagram. Above: an original Twiggy poster in the living space is a real talking point for guests Left and below: Melinda at work in her studio

AT HOME WITH How was the buying off-plan process? It gave me the flexibility to make some small edits. I completely re-designed the wardrobes and had them custom-built to fit my clothing and shoe collections, and I chose light kitchen units to keep the space as bright as possible. What do you usually look for in a property? It’s crucial for my business that I have a concierge service for accepting packages while I’m away. I regularly take mini-breaks to source ideas for my next collections and I’m travelling constantly to meet my distributors and agents all over the world. Needless to say, the concierge and I are now on first-name terms – he’s a lifesaver! The building I live in is perfect – it’s small enough that I know all my neighbours, and I always feels safe and secure. I also want a busy neighbourhood close by – somewhere I can easily pop out for a drink with friends, or grab some supermarket essentials. I have loads of restaurants, pubs and bars to choose from here, plus a good selection of parks for me to walk my Cockapoo, Milo. How have you personalised the space? I love to incorporate eye-catching pieces within a neutral palette – they bring focus to a space and are a great talking point for guests. In the kitchen/living room I’ve complemented the neutral walls with some of my favourite pieces of art – from an original Twiggy poster, to a patterned Élitis wallpaper on the sliding door to my studio. My David Linley mirror is a pride and joy – I love how it reflects the wallpaper design across the room. Tell me about your collection of travel pieces I’m always picking up pieces as I travel across the globe and I can’t resist going into local interior design stores. I picked up a wonderful rug in Azerbaijan recently, and some metal trunks from India, which bring real personality to the hallway. On the wall as you walk down the

staircase are a set of Emberá masks, woven by the Emberá tribe in the rainforests of Panama. I was inspired to convert these into a wallpaper, Panamania, which is part of The Oakley Collection. Which furniture piece is your favourite? My dining table from Nina’s House. It can be extended to sit 14, which is ideal for an impromptu dinner party. The neutral colour of the wood is really versatile, so I can dress it with all kinds of runners and tableware for different seasons and styles of event. At a recent dinner party I used my Lion Toile design as a tablecloth, which was a real crowd-pleaser. The open-plan kitchen/living room itself is a fantastic space for hosting a party. While I prepare food, guests can relax on the breakfast stools or chaise longue, or if they want some fresh air, they can access the private terrace via French doors.

so I placed a day bed by the window and I have a chrome chair with my desk. An essential for me was a dedicated dressing table, which I integrated into the fitted wardrobes to create a sleek design that maximises on space.

Which room is your favourite? My bedroom. Largely because I’ve recently installed one of The Vale London wallpapers behind the bed, which gives real wow-factor. The navy, grey and cream are carried into the soft furnishings, mixing up textures and patterns to create a vibrant yet soothing scheme. I’ve also put up some of my favourite photographs from my travels, which makes the room feel very personal. I think it’s important to have separate sitting areas in the bedroom,

What’s next for The Vale London? We’re launching our first collection at this year’s Decorex in October, which I can’t wait for! We’ll be showcasing The Oakley Collection primarily, which features delicate florals, striking tribal masks and ferocious lions, alongside timeless linens, textured embroidery and luxurious jacquard woven designs. We’re also launching in showrooms across Europe and, closer to home, the Simon Playle showroom this May. thevalelondon.co.uk

BUILD

One of just nine supersized townhouses, all with uninterrupted views of the Thames, Octagon’s latest release boasts five bedrooms and measures in at a staggering 6,159 sq ft. Complete with private lift and extraordinary roof terrace, the end-of-terrace house offers the ultimate in London riverside living. Designed around the traditional townhouse layout, behind the front door of this contemporary home lies a sizeable hallway, from which a large open-plan kitchen/breakfast area and separate dining room are positioned. Connecting both rooms is a pantry, designed to make entertaining as effortless as possible. From the kitchen/breakfast room, contemporary sliding doors provide access to a terraced garden and innovative “walk-on” glass ceiling, which has the added bonus of bringing natural light to the room below. Measuring 23'7 x 18'6, the cinema room on the

lower ground floor provides an expansive family space, equally convenient for watching the latest blockbuster as providing a dedicated children’s play space. For the fitness fanatic, the adjacent light-filled gym with shower room provides a glamorous work-out space with a lightwell ensuring good ventilation throughout the room. Completing the lower ground floor are a laundry room, WC and ample storage room. Two spacious reception rooms are found on the first floor: an elegant drawing room features double aspect windows providing wraparound river views, as well as access to a private balcony. Opposite is a more informal sitting room, with a feature fireplace offering a focal point. The opulent master suite provides some of the house’s most impressive river views; contemporary French doors open to a Juliet balcony with infinity glass balustrade. A dressing area leads to the

en suite bathroom, featuring striking book-matched marbling, a separate bath and shower and his-and-hers vanity units. Four additional double bedrooms and three bathrooms are spread over the second and third floors. The top terrace, which is accessed via a sleek electronically-controlled glass roof, offers panoramic views of the Thames, the WWT London Wetland Centre and Fulham’s characterful skyline, with two separate seating areas providing endless opportunities for outdoor living. Barclay Macfarlane, director at Strutt & Parker in Fulham, comments: “The end-of-terrace townhouse at Bishops Row provides an extraordinary view of the Thames – the sizeable terrace really exploits the riverside position of this development, providing residents with a unique outdoor space to enjoy the warmer months, and all just a stone’s throw from central London. No other new build home in Fulham offers a similar level of luxury.” A further eight houses complete Bishops Row, each offering between 4,375 and 6,150 sq ft of living space, with 4/5 bedrooms and 4 reception rooms. Each property is finished to an

exacting standard with high specifications, which include underfloor heating, air conditioning and a building management system. Location-wise, you couldn’t ask for better. Bishops Row offers good transport links in to the West End and the City. Nearby Putney Bridge station provides access to Sloane Square and London Victoria, whilst from Fulham Broadway and Parsons Green it takes 17 minutes to Oxford Circus and just half an hour to Canary Wharf. Meanwhile, Heathrow Airport can be reached in 32 minutes from nearby Hammersmith Underground. Closer to home, Fulham has a vibrant mix of shops, restaurants and bars, which are perfectly balanced by the peace and quiet of Bishops Park and the river. Nearby Ofsted Outstanding schools include Fulham Cross Girls’ School and London Oratory School, as well as independent schools such as Fulham Prep School, making this the perfect family home. Prices at Bishops Row start from £3.5 million. The showhouse is open between 10am-4pm, Tuesday-Saturday, or by appointment. Area guide Notting Hill Epitomised by its pastel-coloured homes, bustling market and the world-famous carnival, fashionable Notting Hill needs no introduction. Back in the nineteenth century, when the Ladbroke family began to develop the area, the architect and surveyor Thomas Allason came up with the idea of creating large private communal gardens, then dubbed “pleasure grounds”, surrounded by terraces or crescents of houses. Today, for its inhabitants, one of Notting Hill’s main pulls is its wonderful garden squares and imposing Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Large white stucco residences, many with grand pillars at their porches, abound; but despite this grandeur, there is a creative and bohemian vibe. There are plenty of luxury boutiques, restaurants, cafés and bars, as well as myriad green spaces to enjoy. If you’re looking for a creative and dynamic neighbourhood, this is your place. From our Agents

Ian Barrett Dexters

“Notting Hill remains a sought-after area for buyers and tenants alike. A three-bed terrace house typically sells for around £2 million, with prices for the prime six-bed garden square houses around £20 million. The most popular family homes tend to market at £3-£5 million.”

INSIDER

Little Black Book Iain Begg

Chestertons “One of my favourite streets is Stanley Gardens, known for its pretty stucco-fronted Victorian houses, many of which have been converted into luxury flats. Another gem is Ladbroke Square Gardens, Notting Hill’s largest and most desirable private communal garden, which offers membership to residents of the houses that back onto it, and those within 100 yards of the gates.”

Irene Forte

Founder of Irene Forte Skincare There’s so much that I love about living in Notting Hill… I like to start the day by popping into Granger & Co. for breakfast; I always order the açaí bowl. Alternatively, if I’m feeling naughty, I’ll get a cheeky chocolate smoothie from Juicebaby. There are so many choices when it comes to shopping locally: I usually go to Bens Fruit & Vegetables for all my produce; Daylesford for eggs, almond milk and other bits and pieces; for fish I go to The Fish Shop at Kensington Place; and if I’m not feeling too lazy, I can walk down to Whole Foods Market on High Street Ken for everything else. Other than food, I always have fun looking around Goop! And I take my dry cleaning to the American Dry Cleaning Company on Kensington Church Street. If I’m feeling energetic, I enjoy the Reformer Pilates and yoga classes at Heartcore. The Barre sessions at Barrecore are another favourite, and I’m a member of Equinox on Kensington High

Street, so I also walk there to do my classes, or I go for a run in Kensington Gardens. For something a little more leisurely, I love walking through Kensington Gardens and heading towards the Serpentine, where I often stop for a coffee or a juice at Chucs. Or I’ll go to Holland Park Gardens where I can potter around the Design Museum. It takes a good half an hour, but I also love walking to Clifton Nurseries and picking some new plants for the house. I have an amazing facialist called Desi Valentine, who comes to me at home and uses Irene Forte Skincare, and my masseuse, Lucja Maslowska, also does home visits. My favourite lunch spot is Mazi on Hillgate Street. It’s a cute little spot serving Greek food with a modern twist. For dinner, you can’t beat Cépage[s] Wine Bistro on Westbourne Park Road. It’s a cute sharing-concept French restaurant – the food is delicious and the red wine fantastic! (ireneforteskincare.com)

Savills

“While Notting Hill has all the benefits of being a prime London location, it has the added plus of a community feel, attracting families to settle here. Sensibly priced homes are selling, and as the rest of the year plays out, we’d expect to see the strongest activity for best-in-class properties, which continue to sell well at all levels of the market.”

Did you know? In 2010, during upgrade works to Notting Hill Gate tube station, a series of vibrant vintage posters from the 1950s were revealed in an abandoned lift passageway. The space had been closed to the public since the station’s last upgrade in the 50s, when elevators that were used to transport passengers down to the lower-level Central line platforms

were replaced by brand-new escalators. The posters include advertisements for hire cars from Chain Garage (on close by Hanger Lane), Pepsodent Toothpaste and The Daily Mail Ideal Home Exhibition, as well as films such as Too Many Crooks, starring Terry-Thomas. These fascinating specimens are now inaccessible to the public, but you can see photos of them if you search online.

AN EVOLVING EDUCATION HOW ONE NORTH LONDON SCHOOL GROUP IS USING THE LATEST RESEARCH TO FURTHER DEVELOP ITS TEACHING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES, AND SUPPORT STUDENTS AS INDEPENDENT LEARNERS

T

here has been vigorous debate around “progressive” versus “traditional” methods when it comes to teaching, but we have long accepted that copying from the board will not fulfil our children’s potential. The UK boasts some of the oldest education institutions in the world, which have pioneered teaching approaches that evolve tradition and produce young people who are not just successful, but versatile, too. In an independent school system, which prides itself on developing well-rounded students equipped with a global skillset, North Bridge House School is at the forefront of research-informed teaching and learning. Currently partaking in a joint research project between UCL and its parent school group, Cognita, North Bridge House is committed to implementing cutting edge research within its everyday methodology. “At a time when teachers work harder than ever it is imperative that their efforts are directed into effective practices, which maximise impact for the young people in our schools,” says Head of North Bridge House Senior Canonbury, Jonathan Taylor. The project has seen seven teaching staff, from across the North Bridge House Senior Schools in Canonbury and Hampstead, attend UCL’s world leading Institute of Education (IOE) to work with programme leaders, Karen Spence-Thomas

and Greg Ross, from the London Centre for Leadership in Learning. NBH staff will continue to receive on-going training, support and guidance over the course of 18 months, as they work with the IOE to contribute to the academic body of research around personalised learning. North Bridge House is already known for its tailored and inclusive approach, understanding students as learners, adolescents and individuals. This latest research project will enable the school to further develop its teaching and learning strategies to support students as independent learners, facilitating the use of their own thinking, metacognitive abilities and skills. “The IOE programme very much complements our ethos; we maintain that students are unique individuals, whose personal and academic development is best supported when teachers personalise learning specifically to their needs,” says Sean Doherty, Director of Teaching and Learning and Head of Science at NBH Senior Canonbury. He continues: “The beauty of supporting students in developing metacognitive skills is that we are helping them to develop their own creative problem-solving skills, which are not only requisite by universities and employers, but are generally key life skills.” The opportunity for NBH staff to embark on this project with UCL was itself made available by current research in place in the school: a

later start time was introduced for students in response to work with teen sleep expert and neuroscientist Dr Paul Kelley from the University of Oxford, which revealed that a teenager’s body clock is two hours behind that of a fully developed adult’s, making them less receptive to early morning learning. Teachers now benefit from CPD sessions every Wednesday morning before students arrive, discussing how best to use research to inform their everyday practices, from marking to assessment. As part of the school’s ongoing work to tailor its teaching to the academic and personal needs of its students, NBH Senior Canonbury has also been working with the University of York’s Psychology department to ascertain the impact of distraction on working memory. This is “an under-explored area of research,” says NBH Senior Canonbury Head, Jonathan Taylor. Given that senior school education is largely dominated by exams and exam preparation, revision is a hot topic among staff and students. But for North Bridge House, it’s not just about urging students to revise; it’s about seeing how they can most successfully revise and retain information in the first place. THOUGHT PIECE

Creativity counts

Norland Place School

87%

of creative jobs in the UK are at low or no risk of automation

I

f you’re worried that favouring creative subjects will disadvantage your child in the workplace – don’t be. The UK’s creative industries have grown nearly twice as fast as the economy since 2010, generating £100 billion in 2017. The sector recorded the biggest employment growth in the country between 2011 and 2017. And according to a Nesta study, 87 per cent of creative jobs in the UK are at low or no risk of automation. It’s not just the booming creative sector that values people with these talents. Creativity is tightly linked to innovation, which every business now needs to succeed. And according to Candida Cave, principal of the Fine Arts College, all innovative ideas stem from a leap of imagination. “If children aren’t confident at using their imaginations, they’ll be good at taking instructions, but less good at inventing new ways of doing things,” she says. “And while pupils need to know the facts, it’s the imaginative interpretation of those facts that’s the foundation of good learning.”

Candida’s three ways to develop creative thinking in your child: 1. If you’re choosing a school, ask to sit in on a class. Is the teacher teaching by rote or are the students contributing, asking questions and challenging? Are the classes small enough for every child to contribute to a two-way discussion? And do you know a current pupil who can give you the inside story on what learning at the school is really like? 2. If your child’s already settled in a school, ask the teachers how they help their pupils to think creatively and innovate across all subjects. Do they encourage children to bring perspectives from one topic to another? Do they run trips so children can really see and feel what they’re learning? 3. Take your child to London’s world-leading galleries and theatres from an early age. Help them to take an active part by asking about what they see and encouraging them to take a sketchbook to galleries. You’ll spark their imagination, which will help them to think independently as well as see traditional subjects through a creative lens. (hampsteadfinearts.com)

How would you sum up your school in one sentence? A happy, dynamic and successful school that prides itself on bringing out the very best in each and every pupil. What makes it different? From an early age, pupils are accomplished learners and approach their studies with enthusiasm and the desire to give their best. This is a direct result of the strength of our teaching and curriculum, which focuses on academic prowess, pupil achievement and personal development, enriched by musical, artistic and sporting opportunities. How would you describe the atmosphere? Happy, dynamic and collaborative. Children take ownership of the school and are kind, considerate and confident. They also have a wonderful relationship with staff members: weekly ‘leaders’ enjoy Friday elevenses with the headmaster, and every second year, one child has the chance to be ‘Head for the Day’. How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? Approachable staff interact across the range of year groups on a weekly basis, while PSHEE lessons and impromptu sessions encourage all children to air their views. Pupils help to make their school a better place through their representation on the School Council, Environmental Committee and as class leaders. We also offer a buddy system, a ‘worry box’, meditation lessons, healthy lunches and plenty of physical activity. Norland Place School, Holland Park Avenue, W11 (020 7603 9103; norlandplace.com)

SCHOOL OF LIFE SEBASTIAN HEPHER, PRINCIPAL OF EATON SQUARE SCHOOLS, DISCUSSES THE BENEFITS OF ATTENDING AN ALL-THROUGH SCHOOL

Choosing the right school for your child can be difficult. It’s their first step into the world of education and there are many factors you should take into consideration when evaluating options. Not only academic results, but also things like the quality of the facilities on offer, and whether the pupils are happy and the staff engaging. Worth considering are the many benefits of an all-through school. Something for everyone All-through schools combine at least two educational stages – usually primary and secondary – in one establishment. A number of schools also offer nursery classes and sixth forms, taking children right through from age two to age 18. Having recently welcomed its first pupils from the age of 11 into the newly opened upper school – the first co-ed private school to open in central London for decades – Eaton Square School is now one such establishment. Principal, Sebastian Hepher explains: “Eaton Square School provides a seamless co-educational learning experience from the Early Years in our three central London nursery schools, through to the preparatory school in Belgravia and now onto the upper school on Piccadilly. We carefully considered the benefits that continuous education brings – not only to the child, but to the whole family – and have created a vibrant co-educational school that educates your children right through their school career.”

Reaping the benefits This model of schooling is still relatively unusual, but it is becoming increasingly favoured by educationalists. The most obvious advantage is that it eliminates the unsettling transition period between primary and secondary. “Transitioning from school to school is a big step in a child’s life. Our aim is to transform a stressful time into an adventure, where every child feels comfortable with their surroundings,” Hepher tells us. And there are other advantages, such as the fact that younger children benefit from having specialist language and science teachers on hand, and can enjoy access to the very best facilities. Hepher says: “Consistency is key in education: offering continuity in the formative years of a child’s life and a

shared philosophy and ethos with teachers working together across different year groups, our school provides children of all ages with the skills and values that will prepare them for life.” Creating well-rounded individuals Preparing pupils for everything that life may present them with is very much at the heart of the school’s ethos. Whatever age the child, Hepher explains, parents entrusting their children to the care of Eaton Square School can be ensured that equal importance will be placed on intellectual, artistic, physical and musical pursuits throughout their educational journey: “We pride ourselves on making sure all our pupils are happy and confident, so they can progress and thrive as individuals.” Knowing what’s right Of course, no prospectus or website can ever truly convey what a school is really like; Hepher has this advice. “Make sure you do your research, establish your needs and take the time to visit all the locations you are considering – your gut instinct will point you to the right choice. After all, you are the experts when it comes to your own children.” For nursery and prep enquiries, call 020 7931 9469 and for upper school enquiries, call 020 7491 7393 (eatonsquareschool.com)

Alice moves on

K

een property seekers and fashionistas alike may have spotted this irresistible opportunity: fashion designer Alice Temperley, whose creations have been worn by the likes of Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson and the Duchess of Cambridge, has placed one of her five boutique shops on the market with Bective Leslie Marsh. And situated in prime Notting Hill, we doubt it’ll be available for long. A striking Union Jack façade really makes this building stand out from the crowd (it’s no surprise Temperley wanted all eyes on her boutique). Arranged over three floors, and spanning two mews houses, the beautifully light open spaces give the premises a lovely welcoming feel, with a knocked-through ground floor, oak flooring and an open-plan workshop up in its vaulted loft space. Undoubtedly a multipurpose building, there’s scope for the new owners to either follow in Temperley’s footsteps, or create something completely new. £3.25 million (bective.co.uk)

Psst… Chestertons has announced its fourth programme with the Royal Academy of Arts. The London estate agent will be offering clients complimentary tickets and priority access, as well as the chance to attend one of the RA’s VIP Fridays. To register your interest, visit surveymonkey.co.uk/r/artprogramme-2019

A: “It might be hard to believe but estate agents are human. And a lot of us are very good at what we do. I’ve been in the business for over 25 years and I know clients want to hear the lowest fee, or the highest valuation figure, but I will always give an honest opinion. The hard work with estate agency is knowing about all aspects of property and understanding how to solve problems. When it comes to selling your biggest asset, it’s crucial you use a professional: someone highly experienced in what they do, who knows how to work with people and negotiate, and someone who has an in-depth knowledge of property, buildings surveys, leases, management, subsidence, property insurance… the list goes on. Ask anyone who’s had a tricky situation with a sale or purchase and they’ll tell you how invaluable their agent was. You’re paying for our expertise and our ability to make things happen, not to simply stick a property up online.”
