October 2020

The definitive guide to London living

p35 We heart autumn’s beautiful colour palette

Editor’s letter Liz Skone James While I can’t be sure exactly what the situation will be when you read this letter, I can promise a little escapism with our October issue. Our focus this month, as the days draw in, is on cosying up for autumn, starting with a snuggly selection of seasonal must-haves on our Wish List. Interiors-wise, as the seasons change, we’re lusting after the warmth and texture that comes with a real wood floor – there are so many gorgeous options to choose from. For those looking to hibernate at home (and who wouldn’t, once you’ve got it looking so lovely), on our Food & Drink page we’ve got more Michelinstarred takeaways and an introduction to a new series of at-home events at this year’s London Restaurant Festival, while Style & Wellbeing introduces the latest home gym equipment that uses artificial intelligence to whip you into shape in under a minute (yes, really). And our cover star Keeley Hawes tells us about her two latest shows, both very different, but nonetheless perfect viewing for an autumnal night in. Should you fancy getting out and about, you’ll find the hottest tickets in town on our Culture page, or why not head out to explore this month’s postcode crush – out of all of our areas, Hampstead has to be one of our favourites. Until next time…

EXHIBITION

Zümrütoglu: Atonal Drift 9 October-14 November, JD Malat

Hailed by some as the ‘Turkish Francis Bacon’, this 1970-born artist is making waves in the international art scene – but for now, he’s ours. Expect a series of paintings and sculpture that explore the ‘dissonant and disharmonious body’, with Zümrütoğlu’s trademark figurative abstraction as its core. The artist cites Western literature, philosophy and music as influences, and he isn’t afraid to wade into the dark side of human existence – whilst pushing corporeal boundaries. Think highly expressive and colourful canvasses featuring fleshy, swirling strokes in thickly applied oils, alongside ceramic forms that offer a visceral shock and border the grotesque. 30 Davies Street, W1K (020 3746 6830; jdmalat.com)

BOOK BOOK

The Botanical City By Hélèna Dove and Harry Adès

While London’s tourists are often advised to look up – so as not to miss the incredible architecture overhead – this book encourages us city dwellers to look down, and all around us, at the wealth of wild plants growing right on our doorstep. Created in collaboration with the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, and featuring beautiful illustrations lifted from a rare 18th century book in Kew’s library called Flora Londinensis, it offers one insightful botanical – and specifically urban – journey of discovery. If you don’t know your sneezewort from your bastard balm, you soon will. £25 (hoxtonminipress.com)

In an age of social distancing it seems a natural progression that the monologue should be having a moment. Alan Bennett’s beloved series both reached new audiences and rekindled our nostalgia during lockdown. The BBC One remake of these disparate but interconnecting stories of domesticity, isolation, and suppressed emotions, conversely, proved a much-needed lift. Now, eight of the actors featured, including Maxine Peake, Kristin Scott-Thomas, and Imelda Staunton, will be reviving their solo performances – only this time it’s on the stage. Expect a reduced capacity auditorium at the Tower Bridge based playhouse, but nonetheless, an electrifying one. 3 Potters Fields Park, SE1 (0333 320 0052; bridgetheatre.co.uk)

Keeley Hawes on work and life, from the horror of honourbased abuse to the resilience of the public during the pandemic

WORDS by LIZ SKONE JAMES

I

t’s been a busy day for Keeley, who has been promoting her latest project, Honour. “I am quite pleased this day has come around,” she tells me, “because with Honour being shifted in the schedules due to lockdown and COVID, we had a bit of a false start with it, so actually it has been really good to talk about it today.” Honour is based on the true story of the honour killing of 20-year-old Banaz Mahmod, who went missing in 2006. Her body was discovered three months later, buried in a suitcase in a garden in Birmingham, 100 miles away from her London home. The story is told through the eyes of Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Goode, who led the search. It has been co-produced by Keeley’s own production company, Buddy Club, and as well as taking the lead role, Keeley acted as executive producer. Telling the story sensitively was, evidently, a great responsibility, so it is a relief that initial responses to the production (“It feels wrong to call it a show, because that has connotations of entertainment and show business, and it isn’t,” Keeley explains) have been positive. “I was pleased, because two of Banaz’s sisters, Bekhal and Payzee, spoke to Gwyneth (Hughes), the writer and they were both… pleased is the wrong word, too, but I think they are relieved with the outcome. Payzee works very hard with IKWRO, which is the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation, a charity that

INTERVIEW Main image and left: in ITV’s Honour, Keeley plays real-life DCI Caroline Goode, who fought for justice for Banaz Mahmod Below: next up, a small part in the beautifully shot Netflix remake of Rebecca

And it was really inspiring.” On the subject of what and who inspires her, Keeley tells me that she has found the public response to the pandemic extremely heartening. “I have been really inspired by how amazingly people have adapted through this crazy time. And shown such resilience. Just as humans, how we have adapted and found new ways of doing things while being nice to each other. You know, the amount of people who signed up to help the NHS – god it was so moving. I tried and they were like: ‘We’re full. We are really at capacity’. But that renews your faith in human nature. So that was very inspiring,” she tells me. Though the NHS may not have required her time, Keeley was actually classified as a keyworker during the lockdown. “Contractually, weirdly, I was, because I am one of the voices on Classic FM,” she tells me. And through this work she got to see her beloved hometown in a new light. “I was able to go into the centre of London during lockdown. I went in to work, completely officially, it was all very safe and complied with everything. I grew up very centrally, so I feel very comfortable there, I know it really well, and it was so strange to see it emptied out. And it was raining when I went in, so it was like seeing it in a movie – an apocalyptic London,” she recalls. It has, she says, been a relief to go in since and to see the city coming back to life. At the time of our interview, infection rates were just beginning to rise, and there was uncertainty surrounding this continued return to normality. Whatever happens, though, Keeley’s next project should offer a

I mean nobody likes the fact that honour is attached to that, because it is rape and it is murder – that is what it is. There is no honour involved. It was incredibly eye opening for me just reading the scripts,” she tells me. “And I thought if I don’t know, then I’m sure that a lot of people are unaware, so this is something that could be really important, and really helpful. I read it in the very early stages of development, and I thought that this is a project that is at a point where I can be part of those conversations. It’s not often that something like that comes along – where you feel that your work can really make a difference.” While Keeley is an old hand when it comes to acting, she is relatively new to producing, so what the critics think of this really matters to her. “I worry about being good at it, I suppose. But it keeps me awake at night in a good way as well, because often I am excited. It’s good to be a bit scared, I think. I try to see it as a positive,” she laughs.

Work on other Buddy Club projects gave her something to think about during lockdown while other work came to a halt. “When the country went into lockdown, the production I was working on, Finding Alice, we were four or five weeks away from wrapping, and we had to shut the production down. I mean, it was the same for everyone, everywhere. And we still have five weeks to go to complete it,” she explains. “I have been working on Buddy Club from home though. Inevitably people haven’t stopped working behind the scenes in order to get back on track. And it has taken a long time, but things are moving, and people are working hard. Things are getting back on track,” she tells me. A pause from filming also gave her an opportunity to actually watch some television herself – including Dance Moms with daughter Maggie (who, though fascinated by the show, is so far making no noises about following her parents – Keeley is married to Matthew Macfadyen – into show business), and, at the other end of the spectrum, the documentary Crip Camp. “It’s from the Obama’s production company. And I think it was one of their first offerings with Netflix,” Keeley explains. “It is about a camp for disabled teenagers in the sixties and it is extraordinary. It is really, really wonderful. It is about the disability campaign in the sixties and moving forward.

little escapism. This month, she appears as Beatrice, Maxim de Winter’s sister in Ben Wheatley’s gorgeous remake of Rebecca for Netflix. A production Keeley sums up as: “a lovely autumnal film to get cosy with.” Energetic and talkative, Beatrice’s character immediately appealed to Keeley. “I thought that she was hilarious and that I could really have some fun with her. She is so great: we just laughed and laughed and laughed. She has this line when she says, ‘Oh bosh!’, so it became this thing where everybody was wandering around saying ‘Oh bosh!’ all the time,” she laughs. After the responsibility of producing and starring in Honour, this was an altogether different experience for Keeley. “It was great fun, and it was one of those things where everybody else was doing all of the hard work,” she grins. “I went in – I think I was only on it for five days in the end – and it is always nice to do that. To go in on something as lovely as that and have a couple of lovely scenes and work with nice people. The casting of Lily, and everybody else… it is a brilliant, brilliant cast. I really enjoyed it and it looks beautiful. And I think it will find a whole new audience.” Having seen it myself, I couldn’t agree more. Honour is on the ITV Hub now and will be available to stream on BritBox later this month. Rebecca will be available to stream on Netflix from 21 October

MENTAL HEALTH: AT A TIPPING POINT?

Research by Bupa Global shows that the pandemic has negatively impacted women’s mental health, now is the time to tackle the issues raised

W

orld Mental Health Day 2020 (10.10.20) demonstrates that public awareness of good mental health is growing, as is the moral, societal and business case for improving it. Yet despite this impetus, there are still numerous challenges in addressing issues head on. Mental health concerns don’t discriminate by wealth. High-net-worth individuals are just as likely to suffer from addiction or mental health issues as anyone else, but many may seek help less often for fear of losing important roles or because of a lack of support and guidance. And there are some conditions that affect more women than men. For instance, depression is twice as common in women1. Add to this increased pressure for women at work, as they battle gender imbalances in pay and status, and it’s no surprise that the mental health burden on female executives is particularly high. So how do we tackle these issues, and ensure that women are able to deal with the pressures of executive life and the mental health strains it can bring? For some, COVID-19 represents a mental health tipping point, bringing to light issues that might have otherwise remained under wraps. According to Bupa Global’s Executive Wellbeing Index, 60 per cent of high-net-worth women in the UK say the pandemic has negatively impacted their mental health2. With more awareness of the problem comes more awareness of potential solutions, and one of these is early intervention. Dr Pablo Vandenabeele, Bupa Global’s Clinical Director for mental health advises that seeking help as early as possible is crucial to improving outcomes. He says: “Our research shows that 40 per cent of highnet-worth women have delayed seeking help. Of course, it’s understandable that COVID-19 has taken precedence for many, but women mustn’t ignore their mental health concerns at this particularly difficult time.” Another important route is addressing the taboos around mental ill-health, where people fail to talk about their issues for fear of being stigmatized or judged. Dr Vandenabeele continues: “Just as society and employers encourage openness around physical health, the same should be true of mental health where people feel comfortable speaking publicly about their issues.” World Mental Health Day encourages openness and provides a reminder to anyone worried about their mental health, or that of a loved one, to seek help. If you feel that you are unable to cope, then it’s vital that you get professional help as soon as possible. Bupa Global recognises that mental health is just as important as physical health. This is why Bupa Global’s cover provides holistic health management for you and your family, including comprehensive mental health support. FASHION

New season style Social engagements may have diminished, but we’re still craving a taste of new season style. Personal stylist Suzanne Bernie shares her guide to autumn/winter 2020’s most wearable trends. “The beginning of a new season is always an exciting time for fashionistas; it’s when we have to decide which trends, colours, skirt lengths and shoulder widths float our boat and which, though great for the catwalk, may not work so well when dressing regular bodies. Here’s my top tips for the coming season:” Top of the list, sustainable fashion. Be aware, buy smart and think quality items, made to last. Black is back – possibly in reference to the mood of the world, more likely because it will always be simple and sophisticated. Go head to toe for maximum impact, choose layers and keep it loose and casual. Embrace the leather look – preferably oversized, full length coats, worn loose or belted. Think old style KGB or new style Matrix Mix and match checks and plaids – tartans, houndstooth, ginghams or Prince of Wales checks. Be bold with colour or play it safe with

neutrals, as long as it’s a check, it’s working. Make a statement with leg of mutton or balloon sleeves, be it on a dress, coat, sweater or shirt. Keep the bottom half neat and allow the sleeves to say it all. Invest in a really great cardigan – a sexy staple that can be worn with just about everything. Wrap it, tuck it, belt it… anything works! Once again, we’re seeing fringing on handbags, skirts, dresses, coats and jackets. If it swooshes, it feels good. And just when you thought it was all getting a little too dark, bring out the vibrant red, it always puts in an appearance at this time of year and this season is no exception!

REVIEW

Hakkasan at home

Founder, Club Mexicana What’s the last thing you cooked? It’s not strictly cooking, but I prepared an indulgent vegan cheese and wine night for my wife at the weekend. We’re friends with some of London’s best vegan cheese producers and the owner of London’s best natural wine shop, Weino BIB, so I pooled those connections and tarted it up with some grilled courgette and lemon, home-pickled beetroot, homemade Portugese carrots and toasted sourdough.

I don’t know about you, but I veer between wanting my life to return to normal and wishing I could stay closeted at home forever. Feelings that are no doubt shaped by whatever the latest news reports say. So, with new legal limits on permitted numbers for social gatherings and calls to limit social contact, I’m delighted to hear that Hakkasan, one of my all-time favourite eateries, has extended its Mayfair delivery zone to serve the Hampstead area and beyond, via Deliveroo. Eating out

à deux may still be allowed, but there’s undeniable appeal in tucking into a Michelin-starred feast at home. Hubby and I decide to go all-out and indulge in the signature Dragon Menu for two. This being no ordinary take-out, we mark the occasion by donning our glad rags, setting the table and pouring the bubbly. In no time we’re tucking into our old Cantonese favourites. There’s crispy duck salad and a selection of exquisite dim sum to start, followed by stir fried rib eye with lily bulb and black bean sauce,

Chilean seabass in honey, and black truffle roasted duck, served with seasonal vegetables and steamed jasmine rice. Everything is delicious and tastes as fresh as if it had just been carried out from the kitchen. In fact, it is all the more divine because we haven’t had it for such a long time; we certainly won’t be leaving it so long next time. What’s your signature dish? I’m a signature slut – I have a few! During lockdown, I treated myself to a Gozney pizza oven and got myself deep into sourdough. We ate pretty much nothing but sourdough pizza for three months! I make a great Club Mexicana pizza, with ‘chorizo’, jalepenos, and pink onions. And our cheeseburger, queso and dill pickle taco filling makes for a fine pizza, too! Best meal you’ve ever eaten? Dinner cooked by our friends in Galicia, after a long drive from the Algarve. We ate in their sun-drenched garden, with a view over the river Minho and the hills of northern Portugal. It was a meal full of their homegrown vegetables and produce made or grown by their local friends: gazpacho, padron peppers from their garden, super smoky baba ghanoush, homemade flatbread, za’atar and fantastic local wine. Simple and perfect. What’s your guilty food pleasure? Potato wedges (done with paprika and oregano), baked beans, hummus, malt vinegar and chilli flakes: hits the spot! What should no kitchen be without? Banging tunes and good wine! A favourite on London’s street food scene, Meriel opened her first permanent restaurant in Soho last month. Creating a cosy home starts from the ground up, and with all of its characterful knots and knolls, only a natural wood floor can offer autumn-ready warmth WORDS by ALI HOWARD

Salvaged style

If you’re after a look that’s rustic and raw, choose reclaimed wood flooring and you’ll be doing your bit for the environment as well as your cosy, nature-inspired living spaces. The Main Company is a brand that specialises in repurposing – and refashioning – salvaged wood to create beautiful flooring. This home project saw the team fit out the floorboards with reclaimed engineered weathered barn board, and it’s full of English country pub charm. Each plank has been painstakingly restored and perfectly finished to bring out the wood’s natural grain, while the flooring offers attractive and organic variations in tone. £127.50 +VAT per sq m (maincompany.com)

Back to black

For a truly dramatic look underfoot, don’t be afraid to go over to the dark side. As a neutral, a dark wood floor provides a theatrical backdrop upon which brighter, lighter homewares really pop out – and this can make a pleasing contrast. This highly textured Parquetry Deimos flooring from Ted Todd, in an almost black, is surprisingly warming. Playing to nature’s own geometrics, ingeniously, the European oak has been cut horizontally to reveal the rings of the tree, creating an arresting circular pattern. The hand-brushed end grain flooring has been treated with a deeply penetrating burnished hard wax oil, which gives it that glamorous, noir sheen. High fashion flooring. £237.54 per sq m (tedtodd.co.uk)

Block out

Parquet flooring is as popular as ever, but do you know your chevron from your herringbone or your Chantilly from your Versailles? Choosing a pattern is no mean feat: parquetry has the ability to visually widen or narrow a room. A busier arrangement can overwhelm a smaller space – and yet it can be truly majestic in a suitably grand hall. Bringing a beautiful texture beyond that of the natural wood itself is this intricate geometric design from flooring specialists, Benott, who’ve laid the floors of this residential project by architectural design studio Zulufish. In Mansion Weave, it’s one eye-catching wood floor that successfully and seamlessly connects the adjoining rooms. £300 per sq m (benott.co.uk)

Eco elegance

For flooring that’s 100 per cent sustainable, consider bamboo. Technically a type of fast-growing grass, the material can be strand-woven for durability, which gives most hardwoods a run for their money. Climateconscious brand Woodpecker offers a range of beautifully crafted bamboo floors, including their Oxwich Natural Strand. This is an ecofriendly alternative to pale wood flooring, and a more affordable one at that. Finished in a matt lacquer, these blond planks retain the authentic light, bright shade of organic bamboo whilst offering a similar visual texture to that of a conventional wood floor. Witness the light bounce off the surface. £74.01 per sq m (woodpeckerflooring.co.uk)

Grey area

Hailed as the new neutral, grey is enjoying a renaissance in interiors, with a wealth of new releases from wallpaper to bedding, accessories to larger furniture pieces – and stylish wood flooring wants in on the act, too. Effortlessly chic, it’s a colour that both blends into any scheme and offers a cool, contemporary aesthetic. A versatile hue, silvery tones can be mixed with warmer greys to create an arresting visual texture, as in this modern, open-plan abode, which features Havwoods’ Fresco Herringbone flooring. Crafted from brushed and burnt European oak, and boasting a beautiful natural patina, this floor celebrates a full palette of greys. £161.94 per sq m (havwoods.com)

OLIVER PROUDLOCK & EMMA LOUISE CONNOLLY

In their first home renovation, this millennial power couple mix fun entertaining spaces with cosy textures and a darkly glamorous colour palette WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by ADAM FUSSELL

Emma Lou and Ollie may be young homemakers but when it comes to matters of architecture and interiors, they can be charmingly old fashioned: for the model and the reality TV star, there was no question that their dream home would be anything but a period property. As much as the couple like to champion contemporary brands, namechecking Buster + Punch, Loaf, and Murals Wallpaper amongst their go-tos, they can equally be found trawling the Capital’s antiques markets for one-off vintage finds. It’s this penchant for the pre-loved that drew them to their west London Victorian terrace in the first place. “We love character,” Emma Lou explains. “A new build or modern property was never, ever on our radar. We love the sense of history, imagining all the families who’ve lived here previously and all the goings on. I have to stop thinking about it too much or I do freak myself out a little… But we have a really lovely energy in our house. It was something we both felt on the first day we viewed it.” The three-bed townhouse is indeed bursting with character and energy but any unwanted ghosts of previous ownership have been well and truly exorcised by a chic renovation that saw the pair put their stamp on the property – with the help of interior designer Georgina Walker-Duncalf. “It really is a

minefield out there,” admits Ollie. “Sometimes the choices and colours can be overwhelming, so Georgina was pivotal in our final decisions,” Emma Lou agrees. “She planned each room and the general feel of the house before starting anything. As it was our first renovation, we didn’t really have much structure, which was a bit of a downfall. I’m pretty impatient, and I was really pushing our amazing builders hard. But thankfully everything was done perfectly,” she adds. With a side return and kitchen extension already part of the floor plan (thanks, previous owners), the transformation was largely a cosmetic one – save for a few irritating structural hiccups which were documented in the duo’s highly watchable YouTube series From Crib to Casa, which follows the renovation journey. Now, the four storey property is a wholly glamorous affair full of rich textures, gleaming metallics, mood lighting and dark, broody tones. It’s not short on preowned treasures, either: “Emma is obsessed with finding second hand junk and bringing it back to life,” says Ollie, recalling their best thrifty finds. “She found an old Singer sewing machine and we made it into a sink for our cinema room WC. We also found various copper pots, pans and a fire extinguisher in an antique shop in Henley for pretty cheap!”

Originally a five-bed, the pair were able to play around with the property’s living spaces and have created a couple of “juicy fun rooms,” as Emma Lou beautifully puts it: a cosy home office in the attic and a seriously plush cinema room, complete with one enormous velvet sofa and state-of-the-art surround sound, in the basement. “I’ve dreamt of having a movie room since I was a teenager, so it’s a real ‘pinch me’ moment every time we go down there for a movie-off!” says Ollie. With Georgina’s guiding eye, the couple were able to realise their vision of a wonderfully inviting home that’s as much a relaxing sanctuary as it is a fashionable party pad: the colours simultaneously evoke nature and nightlife. “Our initial idea was Buster + Punch (dark, sexy and a little rock ’n’ roll) meets Ralph Lauren (cosy, homely and comfortable),” says Emma Lou. “Georgina brought it to life so seamlessly, which is something neither Ollie or I could have done on our own without it taking us 10 years,” she laughs. With the use of just four colours on the palette, “a really deep, dark blue; a kind of mushroomy light grey; an almost black, and a khaki green” (all from Mylands Paints), there’s a pleasing continuity that leads you from one room to the next, creating that all-important flow. “Each room is so different, but almost a cousin of the previous,” observes Emma Lou. “We have a lot of deep dark velvets, warm woollen carpets, mahogany wooden floorboards and flashes of gold throughout.” And while Ollie is in his element in their luxurious basement cinema, Emma Lou’s happy place is undoubtedly their open-plan, marble-clad Terence Ball kitchen: “It’s the heart of the home, and somewhere that we regularly host friends and family for long, lazy lunches and dinners. We have already made some great memories in our kitchen,” she says. Ollie wouldn’t disagree: “Emma loves to cook, feed our friends and host parties here. She also loves to drink wine and that’s where the wine lives,” he smirks. It’s hard to imagine that their guests would ever want to leave.

Sumptuous velvet soft furnishings and warm-toned wood flooring lend a homely vibe to the edgy and dark vibe in the lounge

The heat is on

Can you tell us a little about your background? I started my career at British Gas, graduating from their Academy in Leeds in 2000. The first three years of my career I spent with them, but since then I have been all over the industry: I lectured for three years and launched my first heating brand in the north east of England in 2005, eventually looking after 1,200 private rented properties before I moved to London in 2010. Here I have worked on gas compliance for large scale housing providers, managed district heating projects, and carried out reactive maintenance in fine buildings and for VIP clients. I’m also a massive art and design nerd – alongside my first heating business I ran a co-working space and printmaking workshop, and in

another life I worked as an editorial photographer and creative director. In 2017 I spent a year in San Francisco studying User Experience Design and consulting to a couple of Silicon Valley tech startups; I’ve become obsessed by what makes good customer experiences. Why did you launch Hampstead Heat? Well, after nearly a decade experiencing all sides of my industry in London, I’ve thought hard about what makes great customer experiences, and worked very hard to serve those who live here in a way that is tailored to their needs. It’s time to invest that experience and insight into a new brand that reflects my ethos and can bring a new level of service and satisfaction to our clients.

Why Hampstead? I started working in Hampstead as a technical engineer contracted to a large national provider in 2015 and utterly fell in love with the place: the care that the locals have for Hampstead, their just pride in its history, architecture and community is like nowhere else I have ever been. But I really knew I wanted to be a part of this community when I walked into the Isokon Building on Lawn Road to repair a boiler in what turned out to be the original residence of the first head of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius. What makes Hampstead Heat different to your competitors? Where to start! It’s clear that our large legacy gas industry competitors are no longer interested in providing anything like the service levels that discerning clients deserve. One of the most important things I learned in Silicon Valley is that there are just some things that can’t be done with a one-size-fits-all, tech-driven approach. We love technology, but we aim to be a humane company that never puts it in the way of what our client feels that they need. We are also responding to changes in the wider heat industry with innovative approaches like our Advanced Service package: warranties of up to ten years are now common, potentially saving hundreds in breakdown

052

© Gianmarco Rizzo

For Hampstead Heat founder Adam Gilhespy, the future of heating technology may be exciting, but what matters most is customer service

costs over the life of the boiler, however, comprehensive and welldocumented annual maintenance is required for these to be valid. Our Advanced Service plan is, we think, the most in-depth planned maintenance schedule in the industry, not only ensuring those warranties stay valid, but also reducing inconvenient and stressful breakdowns elsewhere on your heating system (so, minimising unexpected costs). Advanced Service clients get the first £50 of any interim work that may crop up throughout the year covered by us, along with guaranteed fast, priority access to our technicians. Finally, what’s new in the world of heating? It’s looking interesting that’s for sure: as we are required to transition to electric heat systems, and as demand for air conditioning increases, clients will begin to see very different heat infrastructure appearing in their homes. Talk to us if you’re interested in being an early adopter in heat pump, electric boiler, or smart control upgrades, we’d love to help you meet your own as well as our city’s sustainability targets. MEET THE LOCALS

Gabrielle du Plooy Director and owner, Zebra One Gallery I have lived here all of my life. It’s such a special place – a beautiful leafy green village in the metropolis. My day starts with a walk, my favourite being to Kenwood House, passing the artist John Constable’s house on the way back. So many fantastic artists and creatives have lived in Hampstead over the years and many have become dear clients at the gallery, which has now been in business for 43 years. Back on the High Street, I like to grab a coffee and spend a few moments people watching at The Coffee Cup. I’ve been going there since I was a child. I often pop in to see Charles at Gunnersbury Arts in the Hampstead Emporium; he deals in fabulous 19th and 20th century paintings. And I have picked up some amazing things at the antiques stand in Flask Walk. When it comes to clothes shops, we’re well served; I mix it up with designer and High Street. I like to visit the local charity shops, too – to donate and to browse. Anne who works in the Cancer Research shop is an absolute gem and does such fantastic work, as do the whole team. I am very loyal when it comes to hair, and always go to the lovely Ellie at Venus and Mars. Handily, Zebra One is next door to Villa Bianca: it’s a lovely place to lunch with girlfriends, or to be romanced by your partner over dinner, not to mention the place we always celebrate our triumphs. The local pubs are also great. The garden of The Prince William is perfect for a cheeky drink, and The Stag serves wonderful food. But the gem of Hampstead has to be The Holly Bush. Once a year they host the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize. This year’s award is being supported by Dame Emma Thompson and I have been asked to be a judge. The ceremony will take place at Burgh House and the winner’s work will be placed in our gallery. Perrin’s Court, 73a Hampstead High Street, NW3 (020 7794 1281; zebraonegallery.com)

Benham & Reeves’ Mark Winship pays tribute to this special group of residents: “As soon as lockdown started, they recognised that a number of locals would be severely affected. They quickly formed a group to assist vulnerable people with everyday tasks. They put up posters offering their services and were oversubscribed with people wanting to help. I saw people delivering shopping and medicines – and taking a few minutes to have a chat, bringing a smile to the local residents. This kind of community action is so heart-warming.”

Discreetly tucked away in Perrin’s Court is this buzzy family-run café, and it’s exactly the kind of hidden gem you keep returning to once you stumble across it. “A more friendly staff you will not find,” says estate agent Dairin Moukarzel from Savills. “They’re so helpful and kind, they really cheer up our community.” From breakfasts to sandwiches to hearty hot meals – including the rude-not-to Mani’s Classic Steak Grill – the menu is a comprehensive one that caters to most tastes. But according to Dairin, they’re happy to turn their hand to any reasonable request, too.

“Hampstead remains the go to location for people looking to get the best of both worlds – particularly post lockdown. It offers acres of beautiful open heathland and a charming village atmosphere with sophisticated dining and shopping, and yet it’s only 15 minutes away from W1 and the West End.”

2. Oliver Lewis Chancellors

“Having the privilege of working in some of the most desirable areas of north west London, I must confess that Hampstead is my favourite. Over the past 18 months we have seen various changes to the market, but Hampstead remains resilient. Currently we are seeing a substantial demand for properties with private outside spaces and I do expect this to continue into 2021.”

THE HEAD

Eilish Sleator North Bridge House Nursery and Pre-Prep West Hampstead How would you sum up the school in a sentence? A place of boundless opportunities; a hub of creativity; a warm, open, and vibrant community; a home away from home.

LET’S TALK

Catching up after COVID-19 It’s a sad fact that lockdown widened the learning gap between richer children and poorer ones. According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, richer children spent 75 minutes more a day on educational activities. And 58 per cent received some kind of online teaching, compared to 42 per cent of poorer children. But while affluent pupils clearly had a big advantage, more than half of all parents said they struggled to support their children’s education at home. For Melanie Sanderson, managing editor of the Good Schools Guide, age was a big factor. “Until year 7, children need a great deal of parental support,” she says. “And if you’re both working from home, you just don’t have the time to help.” Prep schools soon adapted, with some teaching just maths, English and languages and making other subjects optional. Most senior independent schools performed brilliantly, too, offering almost the full curriculum throughout. (As you’d expect when you’re still paying 75-90 per cent of the fees, on average.) For those lucky children, then, catching up will be more about relearning social skills and regaining the momentum for extra-curricular activities. Melanie recommends allowing them

the time to adjust. But what if your child has a more fundamental problem – their school failed to provide enough teaching? (Which, in some areas, unexpectedly included some of the best grammars). Melanie has this advice for parents worried their child has fallen behind. Don’t panic. Pupils are constantly being tested and tracked. Schools are likely to review those evaluations early on and quickly identify anyone who needs help. If you’re still worried, speak to your child’s form teacher, tutor or even the school’s SENCo. If your child is less academic – and in years 7 to 9 – you could also ask if they could drop a subject or two that they aren’t going to take at GCSE. Don’t put undue pressure on your child, but do take some ownership of their progress – especially if they’re in the state sector. We don’t know yet how the classes of 2021 or 2022 will be evaluated; if getting a tutor gives your child the best chance of success, then get one. Even if, like me, you’re not a huge fan of tutors for children in full-time school. goodschoolsguide.co.uk

What makes it different? North Bridge House is a nonselective, all-through school. That means children automatically progress from each key stage to the next, without the stress of entrance exams. The West Hampstead school is a brand-new building, with facilities that use natural, sustainable products as much as possible. Our children can grow their own vegetables and look after chickens. We also offer state-ofthe-art immersive technology and apply Philosophy for Children (P4C) to improve communication skills, teamwork and resilience. How would you describe the atmosphere? Our school is a growing hub for the local community, where parents and children are made to feel safe and comfortable. It’s all about fostering a genuine love of learning among happy, confident children. What about your personal educational ethos? In a future where technology will play an increasing role, our children will need to have excellent communication and social skills. I believe our creative immersive spaces, as well as the co-ed environment, will facilitate these. A co-ed setting in particular is very important in shaping the children’s social skills in these formative years. Young children need to be exposed to diversity so they can adapt to different environments as they grow up. The future looks bright

Eaton Square Senior School’s impressive first set of GCSE grades prove that a holistic educational pathway is more important than academic selection

t’s been three years since Eaton Square Senior School disrupted the secondary school market in London when it opened on Piccadilly in September 2017. Since opening, prospective and current parents have been eagerly awaiting the school’s first set of GCSE results, and they have certainly not been let down. As an academically non-selective school, Eaton Square Senior has achieved an impressive 47 per cent of grades at 7, 8 or 9 (equivalent to A or A* using the old GCSE grading) with 97.5 per cent awarded grades 4-9. The Head, Caroline Townshend, commented: “I am incredibly proud of how our Year 11 pupils, the pioneers of Eaton Square Senior School, have managed this exceptionally challenging year. They worked incredibly hard right through to the end of their courses and deserve these most impressive grades.” For a smaller independent school, Eaton Square Senior School prides itself on the breadth of options it offers. Pupils have the choice of studying a range of courses including a number of languages, astronomy, psychology and business studies. The school believes that each individual should be able to pursue the subjects that they are passionate about, and class sizes are small to ensure that each pupil receives individual attention in every lesson. The Senior School will now build on its strong foundations over the next few years, before launching its Sixth Form in September 2022.

However, GCSE grades are only one aspect of Eaton Square Senior School. Every teacher is truly passionate about nurturing each individual’s soft skills, and instilling values that will enable pupils to confidently and successfully embrace their future world. Leadership and Life Skills lessons are an integral part of the core curriculum; pupils are encouraged to aspire to achieve the most ambitious of dreams, and then they are supported by teachers to create individualised pathways to their goals. Along the way, pupils are equipped with the skills and

059

strategies for success in our multifaceted, ever-changing world, through debating, mentoring, public speaking and communication workshops. They are taught how to work collaboratively, across curriculum areas, through ‘synergy’ lessons. These reflect much of the modern world of work, further developing their ability to negotiate, be creative and solve complex problems. Pupils take ownership of their learning because they are actively involved in creating and leading their own projects. The entry process to Eaton Square Senior School remains balanced and well-rounded, with significant value placed on the interview and not just the entrance assessment. This enables the school to develop a much greater picture of the pupil as a person, rather than just their academic capabilities, and from there they can provide a recommendation in a much more considered and effective manner. For many parents, the path to finding the dream school for their child isn’t always a straightforward process, however, Eaton Square Schools aim to eradicate the challenge of tough entrance exams at 11+ and provide a holistic educational pathway for pupils, ranging from nursery to GCSEs. Championing wellbeing remains the school’s priority. Contact the Registrar to find out more. Email, registrar@eatonsquaremayfair.com or call 020 7491 7393 (eatonsquareschool.com)
