January 2021
The definitive guide to London living Editor’s letter Liz Skone James Happy New Year! It’s the time when we annually think about our hopes and dreams for the coming months. This year, that feels more apt than ever. 2020 turned into a year that most of us want to forget, but there are signs that 2021 might be memorable for more positive reasons. While things still remain uncertain, we’re keeping our fingers and toes crossed. Sharing our hopes is cover star Sara Pascoe, who is dreaming of the simple things – like being able to perform a gig in a packed pub, and spend a day wandering around London, visiting her favourite places, unfettered by restrictions. We caught up to chat about her latest projects, both of which are well worth a watch if you haven’t already. Elsewhere in the magazine, if you’re planning a fresh new look for your home this year, you can discover the latest paint trends in our interiors feature. Somebody who isn’t afraid to express herself with bold paint choices is interior designer Emma Deterding, who shows us around her stunning home. And, excitingly, we welcome back our travel section – at the moment, we’re only plotting future adventures, but it sure feels good to dream. Until next month, look after yourselves

FILM
Away
From 18 January on digital download For fans of Studio Ghibli, as well as Jérémy Clapin of I Lost My Body fame, this is a similarly life-affirming and wonderfully hypnotic animation that’s decidedly not just for kids. The feature, written and directed by Latvian filmmaker Gints Zilbalodis, opens with a boy who finds himself in a barren land, hanging from a tree by his parachute. When a menacing, shadowy creature starts to follow him, he embarks on an epic journey of adventure, survival and dreamy landscapes. Without dialogue, just a beautifully gripping score, it is a sensory feast – and one that’s guaranteed to re-awaken our travel wants. Pre-order at itunes.apple.com

Frank Stella: What You See Is What You See 28 January-20 March, Shapero Modern
This is an exhibition of milestones: not only does it launch antiquarian book specialists Shapero’s new Maddox Street art space, but it’s the first comprehensive Frank Stella show in the UK since 2013. Exploring the progression of his career, with prints, paintings and sculpture from 1967 to 2001, What You See Is What You See focuses on the American painter’s artistic practice, bringing his print experimentation, love of colour, and his relationship with abstraction to a London audience. For gallery director Tabitha Philpott-Kent, the exhibition marks an exciting move, which, she says, “solidifies the gallery as a distinct entity from our Rare Books counterpart. Our opening exhibition offers the rare chance to explore this highly renowned artist.” 41-43 Maddox Street, W1S (020 3693 2197; shaperomodern.com)

Radical Architecture of the Future
Tracey Emin/Edvard Munch: The Loneliness of the Soul
By Beatrice Galilee
Inviting us to think outside the box – or rather the bricks and mortar – London-born, New York-based Galilee profiles some of the world’s most exciting projects in architecture and spatial design, noting that today, architectural practice transcends the design and construction of buildings.
Digital landscapes, art, apps, films, installations and virtual reality all feature in this forwardthinking book, which is as visually arresting as it is informative. Comprising five chapters – Visionaries, Insiders, Radicals, Breakthroughs, and Masterminds – and
Until 28 February, Royal Academy
featuring illustrious architects, designers, artists, writers, filmmakers and AI creators, this is one for design-lovers in all shapes and forms.
In this haunting, multi-layered exhibition, we get to see the eminent Emin as both artist and obsessive art lover. Her long fascination with the Norwegian expressionist, best known for The Scream, has been well documented: in the 1998 work Homage to Edvard Munch And All My Dead Children, we saw the confessional artist curled up and naked on a jetty on the Oslo Fjord. “I’ve been in love with this man since I was eighteen,” she says. Here, Emin’s paintings, neons and sculpture will flank 19 oils and watercolours from Munch’s rich canon, carefully selected by Emin herself to unite the works in their common themes of loss, grief and yearning.

Your home, your life
I
t’s a dark and dreary day with good news thin on the ground, but an interview with Sara Pascoe is a cheery prospect. If there’s anyone guaranteed to raise a smile on a blue January day, it’s the north London-based comedian. As a regular on the panel shows, hers is, happily, a face we see much of. Lately, though, we’ve seen even more of it. Back in October, her self-penned sitcom, Out of Her Mind, debuted on BBC 2 to critical acclaim. Female-dominated, and utterly modern, the six-part series sees Sara playing a deranged version of herself, exploring relationships, family dynamics and the female body. Utterly subversive, and brilliantly bonkers, it blurs fantasy and reality, frequently breaching the fourth wall. Though it is loosely based on her own life, sharing it publicly never felt too personal, Sara explains. “It is like a form of catharsis, because you kind of get to rewrite the truth to find a nicer version. So, you get to create, basically, a different kind of truth for you to live in. Especially with this show, because it is a version of the truth, but it is brightly coloured and has good endings, so actually it is a much more thought out version, and that is really satisfying.” She was, she says, thrilled with the response to the show: “It has been such a long period of being, either in my head, literally, and then with the actors and directors, so having it in the world is a really lovely feeling. You know, it actually exists, it wasn’t just a dream, so yeah, it has been really great.” Altogether different, her documentary, The Last Woman on Earth, has just been screened as part of the BBC’s festive schedule. “The premise is that I travel around the world, and people who are the last remaining people doing their job teach me how to do it,” she explains. “One day it would be like boat making, and the next day it would be up a tree collecting coconuts, and the next day, massage in this Georgian sauna, and things like that.” Exploring different cultures around the world, the show essentially addresses the impact of the unforgiving pace of modern life. “It was an interesting insight into the way that the world is changing,” Sara reveals. “Whether that’s the economy or the climate, or, with Cuba, obviously the fact that it is communist, and might be opening up to the world market.” In fact, filming was cut short when the pandemic hit last spring, and with travel restrictions in place throughout last year, the team were unable to finish it in the way they had intended. “We kind of put it into the story, we felt it was a chance to reflect on what 2020 had been like for everyone. It was a chance to talk right at the end about how, ok, wow, jobs are going to change for so many of us – I don’t know when I am going to work again. So, we made it really heartfelt about what this has done to all of us,” Sara explains. The team were in Lapland when the news came that the UK was locking down. “We were about to go off on a three-day trek with these indigenous reindeer herders. It was going to be really intense; we were all going to stay in one hut with the reindeer and all of these people. Then Finland basically said, ‘can you get out please, we are closing the airports, so you have to go now’,” Sara recalls. “So, it was a mad panicked rush. And those two weeks that we were in Finland were the ones where everything really changed in England, you know, when people started buying lots of toilet paper, so it felt like we left one country and came back to a completely different one.” In fact, Sara got home to find that she didn’t have any toilet paper herself,

“I am resolute that I will never ever complain again; not about anything. Not about the travelling or the late nights, drunk audiences… nothing! I am just going to be really appreciative”
and the shelves in the shops were bare. “I was googling to try and find out where toilet paper was, I found some toilet paper earrings with a little roll on, and I ended up buying them,” she recalls, laughing. A memento of a truly extraordinary time. It has been an extraordinary time in many ways, but perhaps especially in terms of being unable to work, something Sara says she has missed desperately. “I am resolute that I will never ever complain again; not about anything. Not about the travelling or the late nights, drunk audiences… nothing! I am just going to be really appreciative,” she sighs. There have been some gigs, but things have been very different. “I have done gigs to cars in fields, and I have done gigs in pub gardens, and gigs in the rain, and outdoors under marquees, and Greenwich Festival was completely outside at the Observatory. So yeah, I have done some gigs, and we have all just been so giddy with excitement to be there and to get a chance to do our job.” And there has been the opportunity to appear on socially distanced panel shows – something that is always good fun. “You have a mug with a bit of wine in. You sit and talk, and you laugh at very funny people and then somebody else edits it all together to make it just happen,” she explains. Sara has also been spending time focusing on writing, which is something she loves and that is totally under her control – a luxury at this time. “I am using the next couple of months to put some pitches together and do some research and work out what the next project will be. Whether it is writing for TV or writing another book, or maybe both,” she reveals. When she is not doing that, she’s out and about with her dog, Mouse, whose excited barking at passers-by outside Sara’s window has punctuated our interview. “When he was a tiny puppy he really looked like a mouse, but he’s not as quiet as a mouse, clearly! He thinks he is a baby wolf,” she laughs, explaining his unusual name. “He’s a half Springer Spaniel, half Jack Russell and he is very energetic. So, it means that we are out for at least a couple of hours every day,” she tells me. “It is wonderful; I think I have now got such a new appreciation for the seasons. Because they happen gradually, from morning to afternoon, day to day. The changing light and the smell in the air. And watching things grow and then watching them become mulch again. So yeah, it is really fantastic to be out on long, long walks. I live in north London, so we can go to Hampstead Heath, which is obviously heaven.” In fact, Mouse can take responsibility for kickstarting Sara’s fitness regime. “I started running with him,” she reveals, “which I’d never done before lockdown. It is such a great thing to do, outside in the fresh air. Normally I would have 'exercise more' down on my list of New Year’s resolutions, because it makes you feel so much better, but I have actually been pretty good, and I have already done that!” What else in on the list? “I would like, like lots of people, to drink less. Usually I’d say that I wanted to make more time to read, but 2020 has been full of empty days: I have been running and reading and yoga-ing lots, so actually I am really good girl and I just need to cut down on the wines!” she laughs. Those are the resolutions, what about the plans? Sara is, unsurprisingly, praying for a return to something resembling normality. “It’s waiting to see if things like my sitcom get a second series, and when work starts up again, auditioning for things and doing gigs and hopefully doing a tour next year, but obviously it’s the sort of thing you cannot do before people are safe. So, everything has got a question mark on it really,” she says. And, like so many of us, she is dreaming of the perfect, restriction free day, to do as her heart desires. “Let’s say it’s the spring, because what I really love is cycling in London, and I basically stop once the weather gets bad,” she tells me. “I’d go somewhere like Waterloo. I’d chain the bike up beside the river and go to a little independent coffee shop and have a flat white that knocks your head off. And then maybe, what I’d love, especially having not done anything like that recently, is wandering around a gallery, looking at paintings. Then spending some time in the gift shop buying some postcards and felt tip pens. Then, there are so many amazing vegan restaurants to have lunch, so maybe going somewhere like Mildred’s in Soho and having a really big healthy lunch. I do yoga near there at triyoga on Carnaby Street, so I could go and do a nice relaxing class afterwards, nothing too stressful. And then walking around the shops on Regent Street a little bit, and then the London Library is on Piccadilly, so I could go there and do an hour’s work before going to do a gig in the evening, at Leicester Square or somewhere. I really hope I can do all of those things again soon…” Fingers firmly crossed. Both Out of Her Mind and The Last Woman on Earth are now available to watch on the BBC iplayer

Sanctuary in the city
Seb Barre, manager of The Laboratory Spa and Health Club in Muswell Hill tells us why there’s never been a better time to join How would you describe The Laboratory Spa and Health Clubs in Muswell Hill and Mill Hill? Our clubs, situated in leafy north London, were designed 25 years ago as oases of calm and wellbeing, offering state of the art facilities with excellent customer service. Times have moved on, but this ethos hasn’t changed. Whether swimming is your thing, or you prefer to workout in the gym or in a studio class setting, we provide it all, in a friendly, supportive and motivating environment. How do you compete with the larger chain clubs in terms of service and facilities? We take personal pride in everything we deliver, and we listen to our members, responding to their needs and requests. Attention to detail is everything: The Laboratory’s directors and owners regularly use the club’s facilities themselves, enabling them to see everything through the eyes of our members. As a family run business, we are able to cherry pick our staff, allowing us to offer the very best service on a consistent basis. It’s what makes us different. How do you ensure member safety at this time? At a time when health is more important than ever, we are taking our responsibilities very seriously. We are following the latest Government guidelines to the letter: all members undergo a temperature check before entering, once inside,
they’ll find hand sanitiser stations throughout the club, and antiviral/antibacterial cleansing products in plentiful supply, so that equipment can be sanitised before and after use. We’ve also reduced class sizes, and carefully marked out individual workout spaces on the studio floor to facilitate social distancing, while use of the swimming pool is bookable in advance, so numbers can be kept to a safe minimum. Our team of friendly, dedicated Covid-19 cleaners are continuously walking around the club, cleaning touch points, communal areas and studios. Every possible precaution is being taken to ensure that members feel confident and secure when they are with us. You take social responsibility very seriously; can you tell us about some of the initiatives you are supporting? Giving back to the north London community is very important to us and we are currently collecting for local food banks in Muswell Hill and Mill Hill – a campaign that our members and staff are eagerly supporting. We also contributed to the Muswell Hill Christmas Tree fund. Over the festive period we also raised money for Save the Children. Further afield, in the past year our fundraising efforts have funded the building of a school and maternity facility in Nigeria, and we have contributed to multiple overseas charities. What would your message be to anyone thinking about joining the club this January? If joining a health club seems intimidating because you are new to exercise, or you feel uncertain about choosing to exercise indoors at this time, or you’re just not sure about which facility to choose, put your wellbeing in our hands. Your safety and wellbeing are paramount to our dedicated, expert staff, who are here to support you along your journey. people are judging me while I’m working out, so this is perfect for me. My trainer Marija and I chat about my goals before getting started. After just one session I’m hooked. It is easy to see the benefits of having Marija by my side – I am no longer alone in my quest to get stronger and lose weight. For the first month I book twice weekly sessions and every workout is different; weights, cardio, body-weight exercises, stretches… we cover it all. By the end of the month my stamina has improved and I’ve lost 5cm from my waist and 2cm from my thighs. But, actually, I get the most satisfaction from the realisation that I’m lifting heavier and heavier weights as the weeks go by – a sure sign that I am getting stronger. BP

Despite keeping up with an at-home exercise routine, I seem to have plateaued with my progress. I’ve been considering a personal trainer for a while, but I don’t fancy thundering around in my top floor conversion flat, and I really don’t want my fellow dog-walkers in the park laughing at my burpees! Up close and personal When the pandemic response saw large events and gatherings cancelled, it dealt a blow to Go Get Glitter, the specialist festival make up and accessory brand set up by north Londoners Holly and Sophia. Undeterred, the best friends got their heads together to think of ways to diversify that would allow their audience to express themselves in new ways. And so, Go Get Personalised was founded, providing personalised loungewear and jumpers that are perfect for cosy days at home. The duo supply t-shirts, sweatshirts, baby grows, face masks and more, in a spectrum of colours, all customisable with the use of embroidery or initial patches, giving their customers the thrill of creating bespoke and entirely unique items. Beautifully independent What’s in store for beauty this year? One thing we can thank the pandemic for is showing us the importance of our local communities and encouraging us to support small independent businesses, say Samantha Freedman and Margot Vitale. The pair are the founders of Curate Beauty, a revolutionary digital wholesale marketplace for independent beauty and wellness brands. With people staying in more, and worrying about their health, Curate has seen a move away from outward facing beauty, to more self-focused wellbeing. Supplements are now the second most searched term
on their website, with brands like Supernova Living Life Powders and Tonik being particularly popular, while sleep-focused brands like Holistic and Kalmar have grown by 70 per cent. And with spa days largely off the agenda, at-home pampering has grown massively. Candles – like those from Elm Rd. – are now Curate’s most searched items. NEW OPENING
Konnichiwa Covent Garden As far as we’re concerned, 2021 is not the year to be making resolutions involving sacrifice. So, this month, if the folks in Westminster sanction it, we plan to take full advantage of London’s bars and eateries – goodness knows they need our support. And top of our list is new sushi restaurant,
Bisushima. Located in Covent Garden’s Page8 hotel, it had its grand opening just two days before the November lockdown. And having reopened to much acclaim last month, we can’t wait to see what the fuss is about. Spread over 6,000 sq ft, the restaurant follows the principles of Shinrin-yoku, or nature
therapy, with floorto-ceiling windows flooding the space with light, a calming colour palette and design cues taken from the natural world. Chef and restaurateur, Sergey Men has designed a seasonally changing menu of well-balanced and flavoursome modern Japanese food, including the
Capital’s only Japanese breakfast. But the best bit has to be the two huge rooftop terraces, with views of Trafalgar Square, which will undoubtedly be in even higher demand this year! 8 St. Martin’s Place, WC2N (020 3879 9403; bisushima.com)

What’s the best meal you’ve ever eaten? That’s a really hard question. I’ve been fortunate to eat at some of the best places, and enjoy food cooked by some of the best chefs in the world. I would narrow it down to Mozaic in Ubud, Bali or our restaurant OKKU in Dubai, voted Restaurant of the Year for seven years in a row. The chef at the latter is now working on Los Mochis. Guilty food pleasure? Cinnamon Social from Ole & Steen – a soft dough pastry filled with vanilla custard and cinnamon paste and topped with icing. I am highly gluten intolerant, so before indulging I have to remember that the resulting stomach ache will make the rest of the day a write off – but it is so worth it! If you could cook for anyone, who? My mum, who passed away a few years ago after a long battle with COPD. I’d take the opportunity to ask her to share some of her best recipes, too. What should no kitchen be without? Someone who comes in and cleans up all the mess afterwards. Allegedly I leave the kitchen in a bit of a state... A hybrid of Mexican and Japanese cuisine set against a vibrant and colourful backdrop, Los Mochis is set to open in Notting Hill this month (losmochis.co.uk)

Expanding vistas
Having not ventured far from home recently, we’re longing for adventures. But with restrictions and uncertainty still very much a part of our lives, what can we expect when it comes to travelling post-pandemic? We asked four experts for their view on what 2021 might hold. Time to start daydreaming…
Mark Duguid Managing director, Carrier Luxury Holidays Spontaneity and last-minute bookings We’ve seen a surge in clients choosing to book a spontaneous trip. As uncertainty remains along with constant changes to travel restrictions, we expect this to continue. People have had plenty of time to dream about a holiday and are just waiting until the right moment to take an impulse break. At Carrier our contacts and relationships mean we can often find last minute availability and facilitate some extraordinary opportunities. Private airport experiences Over the last few months, we’ve seen an up-tick in clients requesting everything from private jets and helicopter transfers to security fast-track, private departure lounges and the option to board first or last. They want the confidence to know their personal space will be respected at all times and they want to reduce the number of touch points with people. Recognising this demand, we’ve built these experiences into our latest campaign, Blue Skies Ahead, with an aim to ease our clients’ concerns with more timeefficient, luxurious and safer options. Humans will become the new luxury Throughout this crisis, the human touch has proved invaluable. And in-line with this, people want to have a real person at the other end of the phone, providing guidance and reassurance and handling complex renegotiations, all the while ensuring that their funds are protected and their best interests are prioritised. Any luxury brand worth their salt knows that real luxury is about people, service excellence and trust. carrier.co.uk
Arnaud Zannier Founder and CEO, Zannier Hotels Fewer, longer holidays With the challenges of quarantine, travel continues to be complex. Short hops are likely to be out for now and I think travellers will instead opt for longer, more experiential adventures. Those who were taking seven or eight city breaks a year are thinking they’re not sure they want to be flying as frequently. People still want to travel, but they really want to take their time when they’re there. There is also the environmental impact: the quiet skies during lockdown made us take stock of the world around us and realise the damage we’re doing to the planet by constantly jumping on a plane. Remote, wilderness experiences People are leaning towards

more remote-based experiences. They will be more careful about choosing their destination, maybe going for ones that aren’t too crowded and opting for smaller hotels. We’re receiving a lot of demand for our lodges in Namibia – the vast, beautiful landscapes coupled with a very limited number of rooms and unique, bucket-list experiences are exactly what people are looking for. Our newest property in Vietnam, Zannier Hotels Bãi San Hô, also ticks all the boxes. It’s situated within 98 hectares of paddy-fields and hilltops and overlooks an untouched, private one-kilometre beach. With just a handful of small fishing villages nearby, guests really will have the chance to completely disconnect from everyday life. Travel with a conscience This period has really given us the opportunity to make long-lasting environmental and philanthropical changes. A lot of travellers want to have a positive impact on not just the planet, but also local communities. It’s a very important subject for the millennial generation in particular, and it’s vital that we all do our bit to create a better planet. We’ve used this time to seriously look at what we’re doing for local communities and how our properties can make a positive impact on their surroundings. At Zannier Hotels Bãi San Hô, for instance, we have been teaching English in the nearby villages and in Namibia, with the increase in poaching due to the lack of tourists, our conservation efforts by N/a’an ku sê at the Zannier Reserve have been particularly important. zannier.com

TRAVEL Think local and sustainable – the chefs at The Pierhouse collect lobster from the end of their jetty
Gordon Campbell Gray Founder, The Wee Hotel Company Small, local, and sustainable Now, more than ever, people are looking for something that is slower, more thoughtful, and much more personal. Both The Pierhouse and The Three Chimneys use ingredients sourced nearby or made in-house, waste is minimised and the environment is considered. They celebrate the finest Scotland has to offer and provide a real sense of place. When you live in a country like Scotland where the local produce is so spectacular, it seems so pointless and upsetting to fly food in. At The Pierhouse when the chef needs lobster, he goes to the end of the jetty, which is just outside, and picks up a creel. I feel this is real luxury in today’s world.
My intention with The Wee Hotel Company is to return to good old fashioned hospitality and offer the warmest of welcomes, great comfort, utter relaxation and superb food. Our teams are completely dedicated to ensuring that a stay is truly special and memorable. There is indeed a huge welcome on the mat! theweehotelcompany.com
Staying in the UK Passport-free holidays became the norm in 2020 and I expect this will continue into 2021 and beyond, as we grow to appreciate the wonders on our doorsteps. We have all been inclined to stop and look at what is right in front of us and luckily the UK has plenty of culture, coastline, conservation parks and countryside to discover. Over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world, but, at the end of the day, few places can rival the sheer magnificence of Scotland. I am optimistic that we have seen, if not the end, then certainly the cutting back of what I call ‘wanton travel’ – a weekend in Prague followed by a weekend in Barcelona, for example – and that people will see the magic of holidaying and exploring in the UK while at the same time supporting local businesses.
Immune boosting treatments Now, more than ever, people around the world are acutely aware of the importance of good health and are looking at their general wellbeing with greater interest. They want to stay healthy, with prevention being key. There will be a shift away from lighter pampering treatments to a more evidence-based medical treatments and alternative therapies. At Chablé Hotels we can develop tailored wellness programmes, as well as those that focus on helping find mindfulness, balance and mental peace.
The personal touch I feel, and indeed hope, that there is going to be a move away from lavish excess in travel and tourism.
Cinthya Alva Flores Wellness director, Chablé Maroma
Back to nature During lockdown, people discovered a newfound appreciation for the rhythm of the natural world and its ability to soothe, calm and revitalise our minds. During these uncertain times, it has offered us the kind of certainty we are craving – the grass keeps growing and the flowers continue to bloom. Both Chablé Yucatán and Chablé Maroma allow guests to immerse themselves into nature, whether it’s the Mayan forest or the white sand beach. From the tropical gardens filled with ancient trees and the indoor-outdoor living to the alfresco fitness classes and forest walks, everything has been designed in harmony with nature and to help our guests feel happy and balanced.
Small, intimate hotels and unique, bucketlist experiences in remote locations are top of our wish list
Wellness for the whole family As wellness becomes more mainstream, its audience is diversifying, with tailored wellness programmes now catering towards previously overlooked groups: men, seniors and kids. Wellness is now considered a whole family affair, and post-Covid, people will want to reconnect and enjoy the company of their extended family more than ever, so will want experiences that cater towards everyone. We’re finding that more men are looking to take charge of their health and our experts can design a plan especially for their needs. Kids can also get involved with a selection of treatments especially for our youngest guests, as well as meditation, yoga and plenty of outdoor activities. chablehotels.com

If you’re looking to ring in the new year with a change of scenery – albeit indoors – Sheena Murphy of design studio nune is your woman. With a focus on materials, process and environment, Murphy is driven by the simple belief that considered design contributes to wellbeing. Graphic illustration pair Craig & Karl have teamed up with luxe London textiles brand Ambar to create a limited edition capsule collection guaranteed to bring joy this January. Simply comprising a blanket and a scarf, the design offers an arresting mix of eye-popping pattern and vibrant colour, woven in the softest merino wool. Based in New York and London respectively, the creative duo are best loved for their large-scale, often humorous installations. NEW YEAR, NEW HUE Never has the concept of a fresh lick of paint seemed so apt. This new year, we’re brightening up our walls with established brands that offer crisp new colours, alongside game-changing new names in the world of interior emulsion WORDS by ALI HOWARD
CIAO, SOFIA COAT is an exciting young paint brand that aims to change the way we shop for our wall colours. In response to our continually evolving and fast-paced wants, a new limited edition shade will be available every month, for one month only – alongside the brand’s 30 strong core range. This is in close collaboration with some of interior design’s style-setters including Justin Coakley, whose rebellious bright pink Amoureuse was recently seen at a collaborative fashion pop-up in Notting Hill. And like all the best paint brands, COAT’s colours are wildly creative when it comes to names, just like the grubby pink Ciao, Sofia. Keep an eye out for January’s no. 31 hue, Maverick.

MONOLITH While global travel might be off the agenda – for now – Andrew Martin’s new paint collection pays tribute to some of the far-flung destinations that have inspired the luxury brand for over 40 years – and it promises to ignite our wanderlust, too. Eco-friendly and highly durable, there are a whopping 114 new hues to choose from: Saharan Skies to Salt Flats; Welsh Slate to Timbuktu; and Greenwich Blue to Portobello Pink, if you’re after a shade that’s a little closer to home. Monolith is a warm, mid-toned grey interior paint with a hint of mauve, and it’s as elegant as it is earthy. From £39 (andrewmartin.co.uk) YELLOW 01 Bucking the norm on fancy paint names is the fashion-forward Lick, where the simple, numbered colours are entirely in fitting with the brand’s fuss-free ethos and utilitarian aesthetic: think sleek, vintage oil tin packaging, user-friendly peel and stick samples, and unpretentious colour descriptions (mid blue grey blend or mid lilac with a hint of grey). Naturally, these progressive paints are high on coverage, low on carbon and are 100 per cent vegan. And in a recent move, the brand have teamed up with Made to make the job of buying paint online even easier. The soft and buttery Yellow 01 promises sunnier days ahead. £38 (made.com) VINTAGE GREEN You know your four walls are in safe hands with Designers Guild, whose wallpaper and furnishing fabrics have adorned some of London’s finest homes since 1970. This may be a longestablished brand but its paint offering is decidedly fresh. The new Earth Tones collection sees bold botanical shades mix with stony neutrals in a range of indoor and outdoor finishes to inspire our DIY ambitions. (Think Cedar Tree in water-based eggshell or Sussex Flint in masonry paint). With the grassyhued Vintage Green on our interior walls we’re bringing the outside in this January – whilst holding out for springtime. From £25 (designersguild.com)
BRAVE GROUND Dulux’s 2021 colour of the year forms part of the brand’s new Earth palette, which sees complementary, nature-inspired tones come together harmoniously. Echoing the colours of the sea, sky and soil, wistful blues and calming greens are offset against the warm and earthy Brave Ground – and it is a heady contrast. As a neutral, the shade acts as a base upon which more vibrant colours can really pop out, such as the jeweltoned Mysterious Teal. And with the knowledge that Dulux’s colour connoisseurs have already done the hard job in putting the palette together, we’re given permission to get creative with our feature walls. EMMA DETERDING
With her passion for visual art and vibrant colour, Emma’s west London home was destined to be an apartment less ordinary WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by EMMA LEWIS

here are homes with wow-factor, and then there are homes that offer such an eye-popping visual feast it’s impossible not to comment when you walk in. Emma’s three-bed flat, set within a 1960s Brutalist block, is very much the latter – and it has been carefully curated so. “People don’t have to like it,” she says, “but I do want them to suck in their breath and go, ‘wow’!” For the interior designer and luxury brand owner, when it comes to putting a room together, fortune favours the bold. “I wanted to create something that was a little more unusual than the average,” she explains, “rather like haute couture – models always rock the most dangerous pieces and you think, how the hell could a normal person wear that? I wanted to create the flat so that it caused a storm when people came into it – but not too many people would be brave enough to do it themselves.” Emma’s confidence in colour and texture is infectious, and it oozes throughout the apartment, which she shares with her husband (who is, incidentally, colour blind – make of that what you will). It is also evident in every aspect of her work; KDLoves’ product range is colourful to say the least. The collection of soft furnishings, sumptuous headboards and lavish lampshades is wonderfully patternrich and deeply textured, too. “Colour feeds the soul!” Emma enthuses. “It lifts the mood, inspires us, makes us happy. I can live in black, but I don’t want to look at black. I want great colour to move me through my day, and if you do it well, it doesn’t have to be jarring or difficult to live with.

You just need to know when and where to use it, and to use it in the right quantity.” Alongside the rainbow of interiors picks on Emma’s site is a section dedicated to visual art. And in the apartment, contemporary artworks are given a vital role in bringing the whole look together. “Until you put artwork and mirrors onto the walls, a house will never really be a home,” she says. “They create a cohesive story when it comes to interiors. We’ve just done a fabulous collaboration with Guy Allen Art and I wanted it all – moon dust, Swarovski crystals, colour and coloured in-slips in the frames.” Describing herself as a dangerous collector who buys on impulse, Emma’s intuitive art habits have certainly paid off here. The aesthetic, sitting oh so pretty between Pop Art and Punk, is as deliberately garish as it is perfectly British – and with that, Emma playfully mixes in traditional furnishings such as gilded mirrors, ornately shaped, upholstered dining chairs, and plush velvet curtains – albeit ones in a riotous colour clash of stripes. “The Diet Coke piece is a reminder of my 30 years of drinking litres of it every day,” she laughs, “but it’s the coolest picture, made by a Dutch artist from reclaimed wood found on the sea shore – I loved it the moment I saw it!” As if to further cement the relationship between art and interiors, here, the walls themselves become a canvas. Emma brought in graffiti artist and long-time collaborator Tony Allen – whom she affectionately refers to as “the man with the can” – to give the apartment an edgy injection of street art. “He created this great design in the hallway,”
she explains. “He covered the flush doors into the coat cupboard and utility room, which makes it seamless and sets the story for the rest of the journey around the flat. All the colours in the hallway repeat throughout the flat to ensure the overall look, feel and scheme is cohesive and designed harmoniously.” Emma admits she’s not a fan of the apartment’s architectural style but she concedes that hers is, undeniably, a property with good bones. “The internals are great with absolutely no space wasted on passageways,” she says, offering that, “good internal spaces are a bonus, but not essential, as with clever and careful design and symmetry, you can create this.” Despite its punkish pops and rebellious colour clashes, much of the flat is laid out in inch-perfect symmetry – particularly in the master bedroom and the open-plan living/kitchen space, in which the eye is drawn directly down the centre of the sofa set-up, and straight up into the vibrant, striped painting hung centre of the stone splashback. On first glance, the flat offers an effortlessly cool, thrown together look, but it soon becomes apparent there’s a clever interplay of vibrancy and calm at work here. Emma skilfully toys with these elements, which pull in opposite directions – and the discipline is admirable. While the flat could very well act as a showroom for her own brand, Emma, who describes her interiors style as “eclectic, colourful, vibrant and full of surprises,” mixes in pieces from some of her favourite designers. “The two chairs, made by Helena of Littleblood are amongst my

favourites,” she says. “I think they say it all – a pair but not a pair, bold colours, interesting shapes… They’re a real statement.” She also namechecks Wicklewood for their cushions, Robert Langford for their case furniture, and William Yeoward for the brand’s general great taste. “Julian Chichester is a go-to for impeccable style and Tom Faulkner is, too, for his outrageously beautiful designs. He’s also a very cool man!” Emma adds. And when she’s not furiously spinning that colour wheel, collaborating with equally passionate artists, or working on her latest luxurious collection of vibrant homewares, Emma can be found relaxing in her very favourite spot, the living room. “I come home every night from work, put the TV on, and collapse onto the sofa with my feet up on the ottoman and think, ‘ah, am I not one of the luckiest people?’… I have a job that I love – 90 per cent of the time – a flat that I love, and family that I love. What could be better?” Emma is founder and creative director of Kelling Designs, KDLoves and KD2 london (kellingdesigns.com; kdloves.com; kd2london.com)

Meet the locals Holly Pollack Director, Go Get Personalised
“I moved into the area with my partner in October 2019, having grown up in Hampstead Garden Suburb. We always knew that we wanted to get a puppy as soon as we moved out from our family homes, so we focused the search for our first home together on locations that offered great outdoor space and local parks, while still being close to central London. Belsize Park seemed like the perfect area. And when we got our French Bulldog puppy, Kiboko last January, he really affirmed that decision by highlighting the sense of community here – lots of locals now recognise him on our daily walks and the local shops in Belsize Village always welcome him in. My business, which launched five years ago, originally focused on make up for festivals and events, all of which lockdown very quickly put a stop to. My business partner Sophia, who also lives locally, and I would meet daily for walks on Hampstead Heath, brainstorming ideas on how to adapt during these unprecedented times. It was on these walks in the
local area that we came up with the concept of our new brand, Go Get Personalised. Fast forward a few months and things are going well, but we regularly find ourselves working long hours, late into the night – on those days we’ll often pop into the Late Late Store in Belsize Village to stock up on essentials (their selection of snacks is unrivalled!) When working from home, I often start my day with a walk around the area with Sophia to run through the events of the day. We usually stop off at Gail’s for a much-needed coffee. We both love a big fresh salad, so next stop is Crescent Fruiterers to stock up on lots of fresh vegetables for lunch. Though we haven’t been here long, in a year like no other, we feel like we’ve really grown to know our new area. We absolutely love living in Belsize Park and hope to be here for many more happy years, supporting local businesses and mixing with the lovely people in the community.” gogetpersonalised.co

“This leafy and elegant suburb is a short walk from Hampstead Heath to the north and Primrose Hill to the south. “Belsize Park offers a striking mix of white stucco fronted homes, largely broken up into characterful apartments, elegant mansion blocks, and contemporary houses of varying styles. Prices start in the order of £1,000 per sq ft for smaller accommodation while family sized properties can achieve £1,600 per sq ft.”

“The Belsize Park property market has been extremely busy, despite the pandemic. Applicants still want to buy a home, although the need for outside space has increased dramatically. The volume of deals we have been doing remains high and my personal prediction for the future is that we will remain busy.”

If its abundant window display of freshly baked bread, cakes and pastries isn’t enough to tempt you inside, Dexters’ Chris Cooper tells us why this independent café is his local go-to: “Chamomile prides itself on serving locally sourced produce and freshly prepared food. There’s a wonderful welcoming atmosphere and a real sense of community,” he says, adding that it’s his favourite place to visit for brunch, “as their scrambled eggs are incredibly light and delicious. I’d recommend it to anyone visiting Belsize Park.” We’ll raise a coffee and a croissant to that.
For those gearing up for 2021, this multifaceted swim, bike, run and juice shop comes highly recommended by Aston Chase’s Mark Pollack. “It’s run by an Italian wife and husband duo who are hands-on and passionate about their business,” he says. WORDS by ALI HOWARD
The UK’s largest ever Youth Climate Summit took place late last year, in which over 50 organisations, including Greenpeace, WWF, and Friends of the Earth, joined forces to host online sessions for primary and secondary schools. The objective? To get all schools to carbon zero by 2030 – no mean feat. For climate action champion Nigel Topping, this is a vital subject that should engage parents, teachers and pupils alike – but it’s the kids themselves who are proving the real inspiration: “Every one of us has a role to play in addressing climate change and young people all over the world are leading the way,” he says. “The Youth Climate Summit was designed by young people, for young people, who are coming together to take action on climate change and encouraging their schools and families to join them”.
THE HEAD
Katherine Vintiner Heathside Preparatory School How would you sum up the ethos of the school? Heathside is a friendly, nurturing and academic school. Our community is positive, kind and mutually supportive which provides the right environment for pupils to learn well and grow. What makes it different? Heathside is non selective and we pride ourselves on being able to find the spark in each child that ignites a real love of learning. Our prep school pupils achieve great results, but not at the cost of their wider education. We passionately believe in the old saying ‘healthy minds, healthy bodies’ which resonates particularly strongly in 2021. Caring for our pupils’ mental and physical health is just
as important as caring about their academic or extra-curricular achievements. How do you ensure a well-rounded education? We aim to expose children to as many different positive experiences and influences as possible; in sport, for example, we give our pupils a chance to try more unusual activities so there is something for everyone. Whether it is music, art, sport or drama, we aim to find something that each child can feel real joy in and that will lead them to a life-long love of learning.
How have pupils been supported through the pandemic? We were ready with remote learning, ‘Heathside at Home’ on the first day of lockdown and I am very proud that our pupils achieved great progress during that time. In English, 87 per cent of pupils achieved on or above expected progress and 93 per cent achieved the same in maths. We focus on keeping school as normal as possible so pupils have a refuge from the concerns around us. What are you looking forward to in 2021 at Heathside?
I am so excited about the year ahead. We start 2021 with permission in place to teach GCSEs and be an all through school from nursery to Year 11. In addition, we hope to soon have exciting news about premises for our senior school. 2021 will be a year to consolidate all the positive changes that have taken place at Heathside over the last few years and really build on our strengths. Cut to this month and Brian Gruber and Adam Monier Edwards publish a must-have guidebook for any young activist, or indeed parent or teacher looking to inspire their children or students. Surmountable: How Citizens from Selma to Seoul Changed the World, profiles activists including Malala Yousafzai, Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg: young people who became catalysts for global movements – all from a single voice. Gruber and Edwards, who themselves crowdfunded the book, are passionate about the distinct power of youth. Offering historical and current day examples, they explore the ways in which our children are uniquely positioned to drive change. While we may still be reeling from the effects of 2020, with our politically engaged children leading the way, the future’s looking much brighter. transform-our-world.org/youthclimate-summit-2020; surmountable.org

Putting pupils first Richard Berlie, head teacher of Hampsteadbased St Anthony’s School for Boys tells us how the school provides a quality education in a caring, supportive environment
What is the St Anthony’s ethos? A caring ethos is at the heart of everything we do at St Anthony’s. This is rooted in the firm belief that every child is a unique person, valued first and foremost for who they are rather than what they do or achieve.
How do you ensure that every pupil is supported academically? The boys are willing to contribute to discussions because what they have to say is listened to; our teachers are trained to strike the right balance between praise and correction, so that the brightest boys are always challenged whilst those needing a bit more support are encouraged to keep trying. St Anthony’s is best described and defined by an holistic approach. Our view of education focuses on each individual child and their particular journey. I constantly remind myself, and the teachers, of our truly noble vocation where we always aim to put our boys first.
How is this achieved day to day? In many ways, this is all a matter of getting the priorities right. Being at school should be fun, exciting and challenging. Lessons at St Anthony’s are designed to draw out the children’s natural sense of enquiry. Written and verbal communication helps to build confidence, while the asking of questions such as ‘why might we say that’ or ‘who can tell me how’ encourages literal and imaginative thinking.

How is this reflected in the school’s results? Our vision, when translated to practical outcomes, pays handsome dividends. Whilst not ‘super-selective’ on entry, nearly all boys go on to apply for and win places at some of London’s most competitive day schools and the UK’s most prestigious boarding schools. In addition, there is a roll call of boys who are successful in academic, music and art scholarships. In November 2019, the school was inspected by the ISI and secured ‘Excellent’ (the highest category) in all aspects of pastoral care and academic development. We are well known on the prep-school sporting
Science has a key role within the timetable and the boys are encouraged to develop their questioning skills
circuit for fielding teams in a range of sports including rugby, hockey and tennis. The creative arts flourish. How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? We take our boys’ wellbeing very seriously, with form tutors playing a crucial role as the link between home and school. Next term, we hope to install fish tanks (to house exotic varieties of fish and crustaceans), which will complement dedicated ‘breakout’ rooms – kitted out with bean bags, comfy sofas and Lego. We will also be running a competition for boys to design Wellbeing Murals for these spaces. Of course, we want the boys to develop resilience whilst recognising that there are many more pressures facing young people today than in previous generations. Our experience is that boys respond better in an environment akin to a greenhouse rather than a hothouse. How would you sum the school up? Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said ‘Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier’. I think this sums up perfectly everything we strive for and achieve at St Anthony’s. For admissions enquiries, call 020 7431 1066. St Anthony’s School, 90 Fitzjohn’s Avenue, NW3 (stanthonysprep.org.uk)
From an early age, boys relish the challenge of maths, so they enjoy a tricky or teasing problem rather than fear it

LET’S TALK
Create your dream dressing room
Director, XUL If your mess is causing you stress, the new year presents the perfect opportunity for a fresh start. But while decluttering is a good start, for best results you really need to look at the storage you have in place. It goes without saying that bespoke solutions will make the most of the space you have available, at the same time as organising your possessions in a way that works for you, particularly when it comes to your wardrobe. Philipp Nagel, owner of Neatsmith, specialists in bespoke wardrobes and home offices, says: “A bespoke wardrobe allows you to use your space effectively and maximise your storage – something that can’t always be done with a standard sized wardrobe. We recommend floor-toceiling designs, which not only look great but ensure no space is wasted. Similarly, corner wardrobes, which, when designed with the Neatsmith corner solution, utilise every inch available.” Think about how you want the storage to function. “When
Philipp reveals: “The influence of Marie Kondo is still prevalent with a lot of clients opting for in-drawer organisation and other accessories that help ensure wardrobes are not only beautiful on the outside but also perfectly organised on the inside.” These sorts of decisions can be difficult, but a good company will be able to provide you with really detailed plans that bring their design to life. “We use photorealistic CAD software that allows customers to see every element of the wardrobe or dressing room and how it will fit into their home,” Philipp tells us. “With large format printing, our clients are able to take the designs into the space and see exactly where every detail goes.” Time to get planning.
“A bespoke wardrobe allows you to use your space effectively and maximise your storage” starting a new project, it’s important to consider how you want to use the space,” Philipp explains, “perhaps your new wardrobes are simply about organisation and convenience, or you may be wanting to create a space you’ll spend more time getting ready in. By knowing how you want to use a space, you can plan a design that will take into account not just the wardrobes themselves, but things like whether seating
is required and how lighting will be used.” Once you know how you want the space to function, you can start thinking about the finer details, like whether you want hanging space to be full or half-length and if you’d prefer shelves to drawers. Perhaps the best bit about going bespoke is that it allows you to really organise how your storage works, from pull-out tie racks and shoe shelves to builtin laundry baskets.

What made you want to be an architect? I always liked making things; when this is applied to architecture, I liked the thought that you are not only transforming material things but also people’s lives. I was hugely inspired by an Argentinean artist/inventor called Xul Solar, whose work played with light. This is where the company’s name comes from. What can XUL offer clients that others can’t? Our approach is responsive and effective. We have invested time and resources to create systems that allow for better communication and bring clarity to the process. What’s your design ethos? We are inspired by light and the value it has on wellbeing. We pride ourselves on the sensorial and visual richness of our work, which results from our constant and in-depth research into the context. XUL’s approach is based on our belief that the obvious solution is not always the best. Describe your dream project. One where clients are open to take risks, when there is great interpersonal energy. And I’d love to do a community building, such as a local library, where we could explore the use of natural light. What do you see as being the major trends in architecture in 2021? The lockdown has led many to rethink their approach to life and work. So, we anticipate a growing demand for garden rooms, and both open and closed spaces in homes, as a way to generate a comfortable space that also facilitates productivity. What advice would you give to someone looking for an architect? Choose someone you like as a person as well as a professional and creative, you might be working with them for a couple of years. There also needs to be a huge amount of trust: make sure they have the right experience and speak with previous clients. 33 Belsize Lane, NW3 (020 7431 9014; xularchitecture.co.uk)

Market insight from our agents ADVICE
Stress free lets Becoming a landlord can be a daunting prospect. It comes with a whole host of new responsibilities – not least keeping control of those purse strings. If you’re looking to ensure your monthly cash flow, whilst easing off the admin, it’s worth considering a guaranteed rent scheme. So what exactly is guaranteed rent? Aston Pearl, a dedicated group of property professionals who specialise in the rental guarantee market, tell us: “It’s pretty self-explanatory but worth providing a definition: for whatever reason, a landlord enters into a contract with a third party (normally a letting agent) who takes control and management of the property. The third party – effectively the landlord’s tenant – pays a fixed monthly income to the landlord over a definite period, usually guaranteeing a percentage of the achievable rental income.” Guaranteed rent is, however, a broad term, and it comes with plenty of options tailored to your specific needs. These can include different products, policies and schemes. With a company like Aston Pearl at the helm, it’s not only your rental income that’s guaranteed, but your peace of mind, too. Don’t take our word for it. One satisfied client says: “We’ve been working with Aston Pearl since November 2019. Without question I would recommend these guys for all your housing needs,” while another comments: “I was offered constant support, which left me feeling instantly comfortable regarding my issues being addressed.” For further information, visit astonpearl.co

“The end of the stamp duty holiday and a projected rise in unemployment are expected to cause the market to slow in 2021, with the very real prospect of price falls at points during the year, hence our forecast of zero annual growth. But from a mortgage affordability perspective, a fall in the income growth forecast has been outweighed by the expectation of a continuation of ultra-low interest rates over our forecast period as a whole. That provides more capacity for house price growth over the medium term, tempered by the impact on loan to income ratios and mortgage deposit requirements.” Lucian Cook, Savills
