Why cherries?
®
Welcome! I’ve spent over 40 years in the health food industry. My first business was running a health food store, and since then I’ve worked to formulate and introduce premier natural medicines to America. During that time, I have researched and developed over 400 nutritional and botanical formulations that continue to be top selling products on the market today.
Because cherry fruits provide powerful compounds that fight inflammation, stop gout, normalize blood sugar levels, and prevent oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Getting cherries into your regimen can make a world of difference for your health.
I feel that I’ve been blessed to be in a field that I love, educating people about the best in natural health and bringing amazing products to the marketplace. When you learn as much as possible, you’ll stay in control of your health, rather than let your health control you. Enjoy this magazine. I’ve developed it with you in mind. It is filled with lifestyle tips and nutrition news, fascinating information about traditional herbs, and everything you need to know about proven natural ingredients. Along with all of that, I’ve highlighted a selection of supplements that can make a lifechanging difference to you or someone you love. One thing to note, I believe you should always discuss starting any supplements with your licensed health care provider or physician. These articles are intended to inform you and help you live a healthy life, not treat or cure disease. Educating yourself is crucial for good health, but so is wisdom, so I don’t advise you to rush into any major changes to your regimen.

Why Don't We Give Iodine MORE CREDIT?
use was not only archaic and unnecessary, but could even be dangerous. Almost overnight the use of iodine in medicine was stopped. In its place we have fear of one of the most important and critical nutrients in our diet. Iodine costs just pennies a day.
When people think about iodine, they might think about table salt, or how it was once used to prevent goiter. But beyond that, many people probably don’t think about iodine at all. Why is that?
With the advent of modern drugs in the 1940s and 1950s, could the profits realized by the drug companies have a bearing on discrediting the use of iodine for hypothyroidism?
There is a solution. Get iodine into Could the profits realized by drug At one time, before the advent of your supplement regimen every day. synthetic drugs that are used today, companies have a bearing on iodine was one of the most beneficial If you’re tired, sluggish, gaining discrediting the use of iodine? and universal medicines used by weight—even though you exercise physicians around the world. But iodine was soon forgotten in favor of new pharmaceutical drugs. But make sure you’re getting enough iodine. The small amount Now we’re seeing the result—skyrocketing cancer rates, an epidemic of thyroid dysfunction, and problems detoxifying our bodies. Historically, iodine was always used for infections, pneumonia and bronchitis. Lack of it was considered to be the cause of mental slowness. Even today, iodine deficiency is considered to be the most common cause of preventable brain damage in the world. But in the 1940s, a single paper written by two researchers completely changed the way we use iodine. This poorly documented paper gave the impression that iodine
you get from a little bit of table salt now and then isn’t going to do much. In the same way that daily recommendations for vitamin D have increased from 400 IU for adults to 5,000 IU, we’re seeing more evidence that iodine intakes need to be bumped up from 150 mcg to 12.5 mg. In fact, many natural health experts believe that typical recommended levels have been far too low. Just make sure your iodine comes from varied sources, including molecular iodine, sodium iodide, and potassium iodide, because each type targets specific concerns. With the right iodine, at the right levels, you should notice a positive difference in your weight, metabolism, energy, and much more. In fact, you’ll probably never forget the importance of iodine again!

Lower Gut Bacteria = Greater Autism Risk? A new study in the journal PLoS One found that children with autism have significantly lower amounts of important gut bacteria than children without the condition. This lack of beneficial bacteria can make individuals more susceptible to dangerous types of bacteria, which can have a multitude of unhealthy effects. In a news release, study leader Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown, a researcher at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute, stated, “One of the reasons we started addressing this topic is the fact that autistic children have a lot of [gastrointestinal] problems that can last into adulthood. Studies have shown that when we manage these problems, their behavior improves dramatically.” (Source: “Lower Bacteria Levels in Gut May Be Tied to Autism in Kids.” Healthfinder.gov. Refined Carbs As Addictive As Drugs When you think you can’t just stop at one cookie or potato chip, you may be right. Meals with high glycemic index (GI) stimulate the brain to eat even more, according to new research. In a randomized, blinded study, participants consuming a high-glycemic index meal showed brain activity that mirrored addiction. Not surprisingly, blood sugar levels were 2 ½ times higher after the high refined carb meal followed at 4 hours by a tremendous crash and increased hunger. The study authors emphasized the importance of people who are overweight or obese avoiding refined sugars and carbohydrates as a critical first step to stopping the cycle of weight gain and the
Raw Milk Provides the Best Nutrients—And It’s Safe, Too! Although raw milk has been criticized for not being safe, the opposite is actually true. The naturally-occurring probiotic bacteria in raw milk protects it from pathogens. In fact, E. coli, Listeria, and Staphylococcus aureas are not very common in raw milk. You are more likely to encounter these bacteria in raw, leafy vegetables instead. Additionally, full-fat raw milk provides vitamins A, B6, B12, D, conjugated linoleic acid, iodine, and other short and medium chain fatty acids. Consider it the original “energy drink”! Denatured, homogenized, and reducedfat milk simply doesn’t do you any good. When you drink anything other than whole milk, you’re not going to absorb nutrients, because those vitamins and minerals require fat to be absorbed and used by the body properly. And if you’re concerned about lactose, about 80% of people who suffer from lactose intolerance aren’t affected by raw milk at all. Additionally, children with allergies, asthma, and ear infections become much healthier when given raw milk. So, want to avoid food-borne bugs and other illnesses? One of the best things you can do is to support raw milk producers in your region, and to get behind legislation that allows them to bring their products to the marketplace.

Garlic: A Simple
Way to Help Your Heart
When most people talk about the goodness of garlic (Allium sativum), they think of heart health. That’s not surprising—there is strong evidence to back it up. Clinical studies and reviews about garlic are almost universally positive. In a recent analysis of 26 studies, garlic was cited as having “striking effects” during “long-term” intervention. In fact, the authors of the study concluded that garlic would help patients “at risk of cardiovascular disease.” Fresh garlic has been shown to reduce artery-damaging oxidative stress in the cardiovascular system. Garlic triggers nitrous oxide (a strong vasodilator) to “open up” blood vessels and reduce blood pressure.
Fresh Garlic Extract Can: • Prevent clogged arteries • Stop blood vessel inflammation • Reduce blood pressure • Fight tumor growth and bacteria
In fact, another analysis of garlic research showed that the botanical provided an impressive—and healthy—reduction in blood pressure compared to placebo. In the groups using garlic, the average reduction for individuals with hypertension was 8.4 mm/Hg for systolic blood pressure (the top number in your blood pressure
readings) and 7.3 mm/Hg for diastolic (the bottom number) blood pressure. For many people, that’s a big enough drop to mean the difference between being diagnosed with high blood pressure and having perfectly normal readings. Of course, garlic is well known for stopping harmful cholesterol levels, too. It does this in two ways: reducing the inflammation of arteries and preventing the oxidation of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, keeping it from becoming “sticky” and forming clots. What are the garlic components to look for? Garlic compounds must work together at the right time in order to be effective. The first two compounds are alliin and allinase, an activating enzyme. These two separate elements combine when fresh garlic is crushed to form allicin.
That’s why you need to look for a garlic supplement that is standardized for at least 4% alliin. And remember, aged garlic really differs from fresh garlic. They are processed differently and contain different components. In fact, aged garlic doesn’t contain any beneficial yield of the compound allicin. Other health benefits
Unfortunately, when allicin is exposed to oxygen the way garlic is during a meal, it is not very stable, and becomes even less so in the acidic environment of the stomach. To be effective, a garlic supplement must ensure that these two elements don’t create allicin until they get into the intestines, where it can be absorbed. That’s why the best type of supplement uses an enteric-coated tablet that bypasses the acidic environment of the stomach and only breaks down in the intestines. However, you need to make sure that the elements that create allicin are present.
Aside from its many benefits for heart health, there is growing evidence that the compounds in fresh garlic, including ajoene, inhibit tumor growth and fight harmful bacteria as well. Taking care of your heart can be easy When you’re concerned about heart health, a sensible diet and exercise program are essential. But taking a fresh garlic supplement each day is one of the simplest ways of getting the compounds you need for extra cardiovascular protection. 7

It really doesn’t take much time to get into shape. It just takes commitment and intensity rather than duration. Consider this study by researchers at Laval University in Quebec. They divided participants into two groups, a long duration exercise group and an interval short term exercise group. The long duration group cycled up to 45 minutes without interruption. The short term
interval group cycled in numerous short bursts of 15-90 seconds while resting in between. Not surprisingly, the duration group burned twice the calories, so you’d think they’d burn more fat, right? They didn’t. When the researchers recorded body composition measurements between the two groups, the interval group— exercising in small bursts—lost the most fat. Nine times more, in fact, for every calorie burned. Another study followed over 7,000 people. They found that the key to exercise is not length or endurance. It’s intensity. The more energy a person exerted, the lower their risk of heart disease.

In many ways, this makes a lot of sense. When we look at nature, we see that animals who are strong and powerful do not run long distances but maintain their power and strength by using short bursts of energy to capture their next meal—or to use that burst of energy to escape from being some other animal’s next meal. Your own routine can be as customized as you’d like. Start off with a 5 lb. kettle bell or whatever is most suitable. In general, women may find the 5 or 10 lb. kettle bell more than enough, while men may want to use a 10 or 20 lb. version. Continue to swing the bell until you are out of breath and then take a two minute rest. Repeat this sequence five or six times or for a period of 12-20 minutes. No matter what your day is like, everyone can find 12-20 minutes three or four times a week. The whole idea is to exercise for 20-30 seconds at your highest level of intensity. You can find out more about short burst exercise at these web sites: • www.alsearsmd.com • www.dragondoor.com • www.artofstrength.com/kettle bell • www.kettleworx.com The key is to make exercise enjoyable so that you’ll stick with it. Choose an activity that you enjoy—whether it is swimming, racquetball, or kettle bells— have fun and start feeling great!

Are you NUTS
about nuts? You Should Be! In our national mania against fats and towards so-called “healthy foods” (many of them pre-packaged and loaded with sugars and simple carbohydrates) a lot of people have been missing out on some of the very best snacks that Mother Nature created. Not only are most of these foods chock full of healthy fats, trace minerals, and fiber, but they’re a delicious alternative to chips, pretzels, and other snacks that don’t provide any value, but only add to your waistline. In fact, by replacing those lownutrient foods with a serving of nuts just once a day, you may notice your waistline thinning and your belly disappearing. But aside from those noticeable benefits, nuts are associated with lower blood pressure, reduced blood glucose, and improved cholesterol balance. Top 3 Must-Have Nuts Almonds Not technically a nut, but rather a seed, almonds are one of the original snack foods. They were mentioned in the Bible, and have traditionally been enjoyed for thousands of years. Almonds are a perfect snack. They satisfy afternoon food cravings, and studies show that almonds help reduce the risk of hypertension. They are also an excellent source of fiber, manganese, vitamin B2 and vitamin E. Walnuts Appropriately “brain-shaped”, walnuts protect your grey matter and your heart. Intakes of walnuts have been associated with reduced blood pressure and much better cholesterol balance, and may help prevent prostate cancer. That’s because walnuts provide omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and trace minerals including manganese. Cashews With a slightly sweeter taste (and a slightly lower fiber content than almonds), cashews are still packed with trace minerals and nutrients that are critical for mind and body health, including: copper, magnesium, phosphorus, and the amino acid, tryptophan. 10

Silica—The Key to
Supple Skin, Beautiful Hair, and Strong Bones
You may have never given much thought to silica. In fact, most people would probably say, “Hey, it’s just sand, right?” Actually, it’s much more than that. Silica, otherwise known as silicon dioxide, is a crucial trace mineral. Small amounts of silica can be found throughout the body—especially in the skin, hair, and nails. And as common as silica would seem to be, it can be tough for the body to keep enough in store. That’s because as we age, we tend to lose minerals. In fact, while some may ask “Have you had your vitamins today?” a better question would be, “Have you had your minerals today?” Without minerals, vitamins are ineffective, and we are often much more deficient in minerals than we may have guessed.
Bioactive Silica from Horsetail Plant Extract • Builds bones—boosts calcium absorption into the bones by 50% • Keeps skin, hair and nails strong, young-looking, and healthy • Is easily absorbed
Silica—like many minerals—is lost rapidly during the aging process, and it’s tough to get from diet alone. While you CAN get silica from food, very little is absorbed during digestion. In fact, you’d probably have to eat 50 bananas just to get about 8 mg of absorbed silica. As you can imagine, most people don’t get nearly the amount that they need.
keeping skin hydrated, supple, and younger-looking, and giving body and flexibility to hair. Of course, silica is also a critical trace mineral for bone density and joint health. The same collagen that makes our skin look young also cushions the joints. Additionally, silica works with calcium to keep bones strong, too— improving calcium absorption into the bones by 50%!
Supporting Skin, Building Bones
When you look for a silica supplement, look for one that contains an organic silica extract obtained from the aboveground parts of the spring horsetail (Equisetum arvense) plant. This organic, bioactive silica is naturally bound to other substances in the plant (called bioflavonoids), which helps to enhance the absorption and bioactivity of this vital mineral. A unique water soluble extraction process with no chemical solvents preserves the silica’s natural binding to these beneficial bioflavonoids and filters out any undesirable, abrasive particles. The result is a highly absorbable silica supplement. In fact, a study comparing the bioactive silica from horsetail to silica from bamboo found that the horsetail silica was much smaller in size, only 5 micrometers to bamboo’s 600 micrometers. With this silica, the body can simply absorb and use a much higher level.
The skin, nails, hair and teeth have the highest concentrations of silica. It helps create and maintain collagen and proteoglycans. Collagen gives skin strength, texture, and resilience. Proteoglycans bind water and create links with collagen,
So, the next time you think about the best ways to keep your bones healthy, and have beautiful skin, hair, and nails, give organic silica from horsetail (Equisetum arvense) a try. The results will make you never think of silica as “mere sand” again!
Although daily value (DV) recommendations have not been established for silica yet, it is generally suggested that 10-20 mg daily is necessary to prevent deficiency, while intakes of 30-40 mg daily or more have been associated with more significant benefits.

Complete Menopause Relief—And More! There are days when it can feel like menopause—and not you—is in charge. Fortunately, there are natural ingredients that can help relieve menopause symptoms, plus address the other health concerns that crop up during this time of life as well. Black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa): If you’ve looked at natural menopause relief, you’re probably very aware of black cohosh. This herb stands as one of the best known botanical ingredients to relieve night sweats, hot flashes, and irritability. It was used traditionally as a medicinal plant by the Native Americans, and has been the focus of intensive research (and real world use) for over 50 years. Black cohosh is well tolerated, which aside from its effectiveness, accounts for much of its popularity. Aside from symptom relief, it may even provide some protection against the development of breast cancer cells. This makes it excellent for breast cancer survivors who need to reduce menopause symptoms, but don’t want to deal with the risks of standard hormone therapy. In one 12-month clinical trial, 46% of the women taking black cohosh were free of hot flashes. None in the placebo group were. While black cohosh is a safe and effective ingredient, not all women see a reduction in menopause symptoms by using this herb alone. That’s why using it in combination with other synergistic botanicals like hops cone and pomegranate 12
extract is an excellent idea, especially for those who need stronger relief. Hops Cone Extract (Humulus lupulus): Hops cone extract supports better sleep, helps stabilize mood swings, enhances concentration, and decreases irritability. Hops contain naturally-occurring phytoestrogens that have mild estrogenic effects and are extremely safe. The most active compound is called 8-prenylnaringenin (8-PN) and is probably the most responsible for the reduction in hot flashes and night sweats seen during clinical trials. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, hops cone extract reduced general menopausal symptoms by more than 200% compared to the placebo group in just six weeks. Of the symptoms, hot flashes were reduced in the group using hops cone extract by 400% compared to the placebo. Pomegranate (Punica granatum): Clinical and scientific research shows that pomegranate is an amazingly strong antioxidant that supports the cardiovascular system, reduces inflammation, protects joint cartilage, and raises levels of glutathione (the body’s own natural antioxidant). In a laboratory study, pomegranate extract showed that it may relieve some of the symptoms of depression and bone loss associated with menopause. Additionally, pomegranate seed oil showed a 90% inhibition of MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Other tests have shown similar results—pomegranate oil and fermented pomegranate juice seem to have the strongest effects on breast cancer cell growth. Beyond its value as a cellular health defender, pomegranate acts as an anti-inflammatory and prevents damage to cartilage and joint structure. Pomegranate’s free-radical fighting power is a must for keeping skin looking younger and more vibrant, too. Studies show that it helps protect skin cells against UV radiation and can actually promote wound healing. Beyond Black Cohosh: Black cohosh is a wonderful botanical, but it isn’t the only herbal remedy for menopause symptoms. Instead, look for a combination of hops cone extract, pomegranate extract, and black cohosh extract that provides a complete approach for menopause symptoms and much more.

Nature's Remedy for IBS If you’re not a big fan of DGL —“deglycyrrhizinated licorice”—you’re not alone. Generally, it is a chewable supplement—and a big chewable at that— with a licorice-like taste that can be tough to get past. Chewable DGL used to be the way to go, but science has moved on and there’s a better form available that can be swallowed in a capsule. No more big chewable tablet. No more licorice taste. This extract of licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a great ingredient. It does everything DGL should: reducing inflammation, healing ulcers, soothing heartburn, calming the stomach, and preventing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). An unexpected form of DGL This better form of DGL is in a small, easy-to-use capsule, and it has been clinically tested, too.
In a randomized, double-blind, placebocontrolled test, individuals with dyspepsia (upset stomach or indigestion) received either 75 mg or 150 mg of an encapsulated DGL twice daily. At 15 days and at 30 days, participants in both DGL groups showed significantly decreased symptoms, including reduced heartburn, feeling overfull, regurgitation, nausea, and bloating. Look for a DGL extract standardized to contain 3.5% glabridin. For even stronger results, make sure it is combined with a mixture of prebiotics and probiotics. Probiotics make a difference Useful amounts of probiotics are tough to get from diet alone, so getting them in supplemental form is a much better bet for results. A combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bifidobacterium longum, bifidum and lactis is an excellent choice along with prebiotic

Get the Right Form of
Vitamin B6 and Thrive! You’ve probably heard of vitamin B6, but did you know it is absolutely necessary for health? You need this nutrient to keep your nerve endings and brain chemistry healthy, regulate blood pressure, metabolize food and blood sugar, create oxygen-rich blood cells, help amino acids form the proteins your body needs to thrive, and strengthen and soothe tendons and ligaments. But the form of vitamin B6 is critical. The best is pyridoxal-5-phosphate, or P-5-P. Unlike other forms of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine, for example) it doesn’t have to be converted by the liver into the form the body needs—it’s already in that form. Sure, you can get some vitamin B6 from
foods, but processing and preparation methods reduce it by 50%! Feeling sluggish? You probably need vitamin B6. It helps the body produce energy, and it’s great for keeping healthy levels of dopamine and serotonin—our body’s natural “feel good” chemicals going strong.
• Arthritis • Autism • Carpal tunnel syndrome • Congestive heart failure • Depression • Edema • High blood pressure • Metabolic syndrome • Muscle weakness
Worried about high blood pressure, heart disease, or stroke? Here again, vitamin B6 is the right choice. Most people who are deficient in vitamin B6 also have high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that damages blood vessels, increases stroke risk and causes inflammation throughout the cardiovascular system. Researchers have
Recipe Rich and Tasty Smoked Curry Hummus If you’d like to incorporate turmeric and the healthy richness of curry into your daily diet, making your own hummus is an excellent way to do so. Chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans) form the base ingredient in this recipe. They are extremely healthy and are filled with fiber, protein, iron, molybdenum, manganese, folate, tryptophan, copper, and more. • 1 can (14-15.5 oz) of chickpeas, drained and rinsed • 1 tablespoon of olive oil • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder (not garlic salt) or 1 fresh clove, crushed and loosely chopped • 2 teaspoons of curry powder or plain turmeric powder • 1 teaspoon of smoked chipotle powder • Sea salt to taste Combine ingredients into the food processor and pulse until well blended. Check consistency of the hummus. If it seems dry, add just a little more olive oil to give it a creamier texture. Adjust chipotle powder to desired heat, or omit it altogether if you’d like a milder spread. Serve with fresh vegetables, pita chips, or gluten-free crackers and enjoy!

Prevent these conditions with Vitamin B6:
• Stroke
found that patients with coronary artery disease have low levels of vitamin B6, and that this deficiency is “an independent risk for coronary artery disease.” Reducing homocysteine with vitamin B6 will also help you think more clearly, and keep your cognitive powers in tune. In a recent clinical study, researchers followed the status of B6, B12, and folate in the diets of 321 older adult men who were asked to perform cognitive tests at a 3 year follow-up. They found that low B-vitamin status and high homocysteine concentrations were predictive of cognitive decline. So make sure you get your vitamin B6. Pair it up with a solid magnesium, which helps the vitamin work more efficiently in the body, keeps your blood pressure healthy, fuels cellular energy, and relaxes muscles after a strenuous workout. We need vitamin B6. But do yourself a favor and find the best form, P-5-P, for the best results. You’ll be doing your heart, muscles, and peace of mind a big favor!

Get Indian Gooseberry and
Boost Your Good Cholesterol!
It is estimated that 20 million Americans use statin drugs. And that’s not a good thing. Not just because it marks a flawed response to cholesterol levels, but because the drugs themselves are dangerous. In fact, they are some of the most deadly drugs on the planet. For starters, statins may cause cancer. In fact, studies show that this could be a real long term danger for men and women currently taking statins, but very little is heard about this risk. Secondly, statins can actually contribute to the cause of heart attacks. Statins lower levels of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a crucial element for cellular energy production in the mitochondria—the cellular “engine.” Since CoQ10 is needed by virtually every cell in the body—especially heart cells—you can understand how much more risk statins create from the very beginning. There is a better solution, and it doesn’t put you at risk.
Indian Gooseberry helps our body detoxify carcinogens, boosts cancer-fighting NK (natural killer) cell activity, and prevents DNA mutations caused by aluminum, lead, and chromium. Used every day, Indian Gooseberry helps you balance cholesterol levels, too:
14%
increased HDL (good cholesterol)
21%
decreased LDL (bad cholesterol)
Most serious cholesterol problems are due to not having enough HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or “good” cholesterol. After all, our bodies produce up to 1,000 mg of cholesterol a day, and we need cholesterol for many crucial processes. But when it is not in balance, the odds of oxidation and inflammation are much greater. In terms of effectiveness, Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), also known as “Amla”, is excellent for getting your cholesterol levels into balance and reducing oxidation. Used in Ayurvedic practice for over 2,000 years, practitioners noted that it helped the body heal, reduced inflammation, strengthened vision, and made bones stronger. Recently, it has been shown to inhibit cancer growth in human lung cancer cells, melanoma cells, and cervical cancer cells. One of the ways it can do this is simply through intense antioxidant power.
• Participants taking 500 -1,000 mg of Indian Gooseberry increased HDL (good cholesterol) by 14% and significantly decreased LDL cholesterol by 21%. Total serum cholesterol was reduced by 17% and triglyceride levels dropped by 24% within only three months.1,2
• Raising HDL levels by even 1% can reduce your risk of heart disease by 2 to 3%, and make a big difference in your overall cholesterol balance and risk of oxidized LDL cholesterol.
• Indian Gooseberry can reduce levels of CRP (C-reactive protein) by over 30%. This marker of inflammation in the cardiovascular system is routinely measured to determine an individual’s risk.3 Look for an Indian Gooseberry fruit extract standardized to contain greater than 35% polyphenol content. Jonny Bowden Warns Us:
“Don’t Believe Every Study You Read!” Jonny Bowden, PhD, CNS, (aka “The Rogue Nutritionist”) is a nationally known expert on weight loss, nutrition and health. Recently, he took the press to task for erroneous reporting regarding a study about omega-3s and the risk of prostate cancer. Unfortunately, the study’s true findings weren’t reflected in the headlines at all. A sample of just a few: “Omega-3 supplements linked to prostate cancer” (Fox News) “Omega-3 supplements could raise prostate risk” (Telegraph) “Fish oil supplements linked to prostate cancer” (Health News) “Men who take omega-3 supplements at 71% higher risk of prostate cancer” (NY Daily News) “Omega-3 supplements may trigger prostate cancer” (Nursing Times) “Hold the salmon: Omega-3 fatty acids linked to higher risk of cancer” (CNN) Dr. Bowden’s response was swift and to the point: …reading this, you might well think that researchers divided a population of men into two groups, gave one group fish oil supplements and the other a placebo, and found that the ones who took the fish oil supplements got way more prostate cancer than the ones who didn’t. Right? Wrong.
The first thing you need to know is that no fish oil supplements—or any other kind of supplements, for that matter—were given in this study. None. This study looked at blood levels of longchain fatty acids such as those found in fish (EPA and DHA). And even there, the association between higher blood levels and prostate cancer … was only found for DHA. No association was found between EPA and prostate cancer, nor between prostate cancer and ALA (the omega-3 found in flax and chia). So, why then, did the media make such a big deal about supplementation? In Dr. Bowden’s view, the only real explanation—aside from lazy reporting— was that "There’s almost no other explanation other than a strong anti-supplement bias and a desire for shocking headlines. And any doubt about the objectivity of the researchers should have been abandoned after one of them … told reporters, 'We’ve shown once again that use of nutritional supplements may be harmful'." However, no actual supplements were used in the study, as Dr. Bowden noted:
Supplements weren’t a part of the study and weren’t given to the participants. … Like so many studies these days, this was an observational study (based on nested data from participants in the
Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial from 1994-2003).There was no experiment, just an observation about what things were found together in this particular population." “It’s worth repeating—and repeating, and repeating—that correlation is not causation. Observational studies like this one are not randomized controlled studies. They simply point to associations—like the fact that people who have “yellowish fingers” tend to have higher rates of lung cancer. But association studies like this never tell us why those associations exist. (Yellow finger syndrome is a “side-effect” of holding cigarettes in your hand all day long. Clearly, yellow fingers don’t “cause” lung cancer, but there’s a strong positive association between the two.) In this study, we have no idea why higher blood levels of DHA were found to be associated with higher levels of risk for aggressive prostate cancer. DHA might be a marker for something else, just as “yellow fingers” are a “marker” for smoking. Researchers say they like to “control” for extraneous variables, but for reasons unknown, these researchers did not “control” for such variables as age and race and… oh yes, diet. God knows what else they didn’t “control” for.
Essentially, because the study results were taken out of context, there was a flurry of headlines with nothing to back them up. As Dr. Bowden noted, “context is everything.” Digging deeper into natural health is essential when you want the real picture. And that’s certainly something we all need to keep in mind when the next “breaking news” about supplements or wholesome foods makes a big splash in the media. 17

Revitalize Your Adrenal Glands and Take Charge of Your Life! If even the smallest amounts of physical and mental stress leave you feeling incredibly drained, you’re probably dealing with adrenal burnout. Adrenal burnout can have serious, long-term consequences. First, it tends to build a spiral of unhealthy avoidance behavior. It also weakens the body’s defenses against colds and flus, and can affect blood pressure, too. So this is nothing you want to ignore. The adrenal glands are two small glands about the size of an acorn, one atop each kidney. They help the body fight against stress and fatigue and are responsible for controlling stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. For many people— anyone who is a natural risk-taker and enjoys a challenge—the adrenal glands perform just fine. But for others, whose lives are dominated by a fear of the unknown and would rather shrink from any confrontation, the adrenals probably need revitalizing. The right ingredients can help. Vitamin C, best known for immune support, is also a key nutrient for the adrenal glands. That’s because during stressful events, the adrenal glands secrete this antioxidant vitamin to protect against oxidative stress. Of course, vitamin C is water-soluble, which means you have to replenish it often. It makes sense, too, when you consider that people with adrenal burnout are more likely to get colds and flus—there’s just not enough natural antioxidant left in their already-stressed system to keep them healthy. 18
Another nutrient that’s an absolute “must have” for revitalizing your adrenal glands is DHEA. In our bodies, this hormone is synthesized by the adrenal glands, and is wellknown for its ability to “recharge your batteries” and help you feel more energetic. The amino acid L-tyrosine helps the mind and body resist stressful situations. While L-tyrosine (also known simply as “tyrosine” is found in food sources including cheese and yogurt, you’re not guaranteed a standard amount with either of those sources, so supplementation is a smart option. Extract from licorice can help stop the breakdown of the beneficial adrenal hormones, making them more available to the body. Because licorice can extend the “shelf life” (so to speak) of adrenal hormones, it means the adrenal glands themselves have less work to do just trying to catch up. Another natural hormone produced by the adrenal glands is pregnenolone. It’s a good one to add to your adrenalrebuilding regimen because it is a building block for DHEA, too. While vitamin B6 is fairly common, the best and most bioavailable form, Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P-5-P) isn’t. It’s worth the time to seek it out. This form of vitamin B6 doesn’t need to be converted by the body and can go to work right away, helping form neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, two natural “feel good” chemicals produced by the body. Another member of the B-vitamin family, pantothenic acid, is a good revitalizing ingredient to get into your regimen, too. It helps the body create cellular energy from the foods you eat, including metabolizing energy from dietary fats. Extract from Rehmannia root (Rehmannia glutinosa), also known as Di Huang, is an herb native to northern China. It was continued >

used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as a tonic, and to increase energy. That’s understandable, because the herb contains a compound called catalpol which helps stimulate production of adrenal hormones. And, of course, adrenal extract contains the naturally occurring hormones and nutrients that can add extra support. The source of adrenal extract is critical, though. Look for an extract that is from a clean, healthy, bovine source like the free-range cattle in Argentina. You can get your adrenal glands back into gear, and meet everyday challenges without feeling exhausted. You simply need to recharge with the right nutrients!

Stop the Pain and Tingling of
Neuropathy
For people with diabetes, neuropathy—the “tingling” feeling or loss of sensation in the feet is one of the most distressing symptoms. Left untreated, it will get worse. Prescription drugs for treatment all have their share of significant side effects, and none of them really get at the core of the problem—repairing delicate blood vessels and nerve endings and helping the body learn how to metabolize sugar properly again. The good news is there are clinically-tested, safe, and effective nutrients that can make a big difference. Nutrients that Heal Neuropathy: B1 (Thiamin): Deficiency of B1—also known as thiamin— greatly affects your nervous system, blood sugar levels, mood and the ability to think clearly. Thiamin helps the body metabolize carbohydrates effectively, to turn those calories into energy. Without it, not only do sugars not break down as they should, (leaving more in the bloodstream), but your chances of oxidative damage and inflammation in the blood vessels increase. Not surprisingly, people who have difficulty staying on task or controlling their emotions have found great improvement with supplementation, becoming more composed and energetic. B6 as P-5-P (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate): Vitamin B6 is available in multiple forms, but only one is the bioactive form of vitamin B6 used in the human body—Pyridoxal-5Phosphate, or “P-5-P”. By providing this necessary nutrient in the P-5-P form, it doesn’t require conversion by the liver, so it can bypass that step. In a recent study examining patients with hyperglycemia —high blood sugar—14 of 34 patients were found to be 20
deficient in vitamin B6 as well as having high blood glucose levels. But, those in the group who were given P-5-P—the bio-active form of vitamin B6—showed reduced blood glucose after only 7 days. B12 as Methylcobalamin: The vitamin B12 you’ll find in most supplements is in the cyanocobalamin form, which requires a cumbersome conversion process by the stomach and liver, so its value can be limited. However, the methylcobalamin form is already in the ultimate form that the body needs. That’s important, because vitamin B12 helps nerves function better and delays the damage to nerves in diabetic conditions. Folic acid as Methylfolate: Like P-5-P and methylcobalamin, methylfolate is an active form that goes to work in the body right away, versus the more common form of folic acid. Current research combining this form of folic acid with P-5-P (vitamin B6) and methylcobalamin (vitamin B12) shows that it improves the nerve fibers that lay close to the surface of the skin. At the end of 6 months, 82% reported reduced frequency and intensity of the “pins and needles” feeling or of the painful sensation (or lack of sensation) brought about by simple touch and contact. Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2, reduced diabetic neuropathy symptoms in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study over the course of four months when combined with other B-vitamins. continued >

Did you know? The word “vitamin” is only about 100 years old. Traditionally, ashwagandha has been prescribed for many things: calming nerves, reducing inflammation, and increasing both libido and stamina. Aside from these more psychological effects, ashwagandha is a well-known traditional therapeutic for arthritis and joint pain, so it is an excellent all-around herbal medicine for just about anyone. The scientific explanations for ashwagandha’s success? It contains a wealth of potent natural compounds, known as withanolides that boost resistance to stressors—physical and psychological. In fact, in scientific studies, ashwagandha has been shown to reduce corticosterone levels and increase antioxidant activity. The result—less “fight or flight” and more calm, and less oxidative damage as well. Clinical and scientific studies have found that ashwagandha not only reduces stress by decreasing cortisol levels, it can significantly reduce nervous tension as well—by over 50% in one clinical trial (as measured by a standard rating scale).
cognitive, stress-reducing, and energizing effects of the herb. Clinical research on rhodiola has shown some remarkable results. For instance, one well-known clinical study focusing on fatigue associated with night duty for young physicians showed an improvement in the rhodiola group for total mental performance—important for anyone working during the evening hours, but especially critical in this case.
Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) is another powerful adaptogen with a long history of traditional use. In more recent years, it has been clinically studied and shown to enhance concentration and physical stamina. Important constituents of rhodiola include salidrosides and the compounds rosavin, rosin, and rosarin, which are specific to the Rhodiola rosea species. In chemical and scientific analysis, it is primarily these compounds that are responsible for the

Other clinical research focused on individuals trying to accomplish many goals in a limited time period, something many of us could identify with, but in this case, relating to students and final exams. In one double-blind study of 60 college students, the rhodiola group saw improvements in mental fatigue, overall fitness and well-being, and final exam grades—a real world test with positive results if ever there was one. Stand Up To Stress
In other studies, ashwagandha has also been shown to increase physical energy and stamina, fight bacteria, and even relieve stress-related male infertility.
Every Body's Multiple
You can’t control everything. In fact, the very urge to do so is one of the reasons people experience such intense feelings of stress and feel overwhelmed. But, it’s certainly true that anybody can be “overtaken by events,” too. There are natural ways to stand up to stress and thrive. The first is to work on changing your outlook. The second, is to make ashwagandha and rhodiola a part of your daily regimen. These two adaptogens help you resist the damaging effects of stress and be revitalized and recharged, with the time-tested support you need to meet each day in good health in both body and spirit.
