ROUTE 66 In this book you will find some photographs of the great places to visit on Route 66 with some tips on making the journey from Chicago to Santa Monica even more memorable. In 2014 we travelled with a small group on a photographic tour trying to capture the essence of this iconic road trip. This book will give you a flavour of the route.

FOREWARD This photography guide is designed to visually help you plan your journey along Route 66 and give you an idea of what to expect during your trip. I have added the photographs in the order that we undertook the trip from Chicago to Santa Monica - the maps show the places we visited and the approximate mileage covered on each day. I have also added some shots from the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas and Monument Valley which are detours off the route but well worth visiting.

I am a photographer based in Ringwood, Hampshire. For the past 17 years my wife Helen and I have been running Fotocourses. We provide a variety of photography courses in the United Kingdom and overseas. You can find out more about us by visiting our web site:

In 2014 I was lucky enough to cover this journey with a fine group of people who made the journey really enjoyable. They appear in the first photo of this book which is dedicated to them - Maria, Andrea, Derek, Ian, John and Isaac. Thanks for making the Route 66 trip great fun.

Gary Fooks

www.fotocourses.co.uk I hope you enjoy this book and I hope to see you on one of our courses in the future.

To give some idea of the settings used on the photographs in this book I have included a section at the end of the guide. 2

PREPARATION If you are planning this trip then make sure you have the following: A good road atlas of the USA. A reliable Sat Nav with maps of the USA. This can be obtained from your car hire company. The Route 66 EZ Guide which details the route with maps and guidance. I used this for my trip and would highly recommend it.

There are also apps like Navfree that allow you to view the route even when not connected to a phone network. Download the maps for the following States: Illinois Missouri Kansas Oklahoma Texas

New Mexico Arizona California. If your are detouring off the route to visit Monument Valley and Las Vegas then you may also need: Utah Nevada I would highly recommend both of these places as well as the Grand Canyon for stunning scenery. Check out the sections on these which have been added to this book.

Car Hire We needed a big vehicle and found that there is a lot of choice. You will pay a premium to drop the car off in another state so bear this in mind when you look at the quotes. It is also a good idea to get an International Driving Licence sorted as this is preferred in the USA for car hire. These can be obtained from the Post Office and you will still need your actual driving licence. It is probably a good idea to have at least 2 drivers as driving 2500 miles is a long, long way. Make sure that all the extras are included when you hire a car, typically breakdown cover and removal of a large excess are added to the costs when you pay for your car hire. Fuel costs are cheaper iii

in the USA but the cars are not as economical as European cars so MPG is lower. Our seven seater SUV was returning around 18 MPG! Accommodation There are no shortage of places to stay along the route but some of the retro motels will get booked up so it may be worth booking these before you go. You therefore need an idea of where to stay and the distance between places. I would allow 2 weeks for the straight trip and 2 extra days if you want to visit Las Vegas and Monument Valley. Food There are hundreds of Diners along the route and this guide will show you some of my favourites and must see stops. We found food to be good quality and plentiful. Breakfasts are huge and Burgers, Steaks and Pizzas are superb. If you want fine Michelin starred dining however this trip is definitely not for you! Flights We found the cheapest way to organise flights was to book a return flight to Chicago and an internal flight from LA to Chicago at the end. Internal flights are inexpensive, just make sure you allow a good few hours to transfer on your return leg at Chicago.

Time of Year We visited in March and found it a little early for the eastern states. We were lucky and avoided some heavy snow. The benefit of an early start is the route is quiet but some places will be closed. Peak times to travel are probably April to October but prices for hotels and flights may be more expensive. Places like The View hotel in Monument Valley greatly increase in price over the peak months.

CHICAGO

We flew into Chicago and as our flight was delayed we only really managed to get up to the top floor of the John Hancock Observatory and took the first image through the glass. We were not allowed to take tripods up with us as a security precaution so had to rely on chairs and tables in the restaurant to steady the camera. This image was taken at a low ISO (400) F3.5 at 1 second. The camera was placed as close to the glass as possible to reduce interior reflections and tidied up in Photoshop. Worth a visit at night or during the day for great views of Chicago. We stayed near the Magnificent Mile at the MileNorth Hotel in Chicago which is one of the main shopping streets. The hotel was reasonable and a good base with car parking available. The next day we headed off for breakfast a Lou Mitchell’s for a true Route 66 breakfast experience, before heading to the official start sign on Adam Street and Michigan Avenue.

The beginning of Route 66 - All trips on Route 66 need to start with this sign.

DAY 2 CHICAGO - SPRINGFIELD 214 MILES

3

This is a great first day and really gets you into the trip. Places of interest are Joliet, Willmington. . Braidwood, Dwight, Pontiac Lexington and Atlanta. Check out the next few pages with images taken along this part of the route.

10

Joliet - Home of the Blues Brothers with the now closed State Prison used in Prison Beak and the Blues Brothers Movie.

Joliet Around 40 miles out of Chicago you will arrive at Joliet with its state prison just off Route 66. There are diners and garages along the route so take your time and stop to take pictures when you see something of interest. I really wanted to see the Muffler Men along the route. On Route 66 there are 3 good examples of

these fibreglass figures that were used to advertise exhaust systems and have now been converted to different uses - they have become tourist attractions along the route. The first is at Wilmington and is the Gemini Giant and is outside the Launching Pad Diner which was sadly closed down when we passed in 2014. The giant is still there and worth some shots.

11

The Gemini Giant All 3 shots taken at f8 1/250th iso 200

Braidwood The Polk-a-Do Drive in Motel.

Interior shot taken with flash and then run through filters in photoshop to give a retro feel.

15

Pontiac Home of the Pontiac Museum and Murals all over town. Take time to explore the town and visit the bus owned by Bob Waldmire. Whilst Bob has sadly passed away his passion for Route 66 lives on in his work. (See Mural on Page 2)

DAY 3 SPRINGFIELD TO ST LOUIS 96 MILES

A leisurely drive through the countryside brings you to some Route 66 gems. The Ariston Cafe and Skyview Drive-In are great stops. The oldest surviving filling station at Mount Olive and the Chain of Rocks Bridge are also worth a visit. You will pass some great filling stations along the way and the famous Rabbit Ranch. Make time to stop and have a chat. Plus two more Muffler Men at Springfield and Atlanta.

Ariston Cafe A must see place on the route - an amazing Diner experience.

One of my favorite days on the trip - old cars and historic places at every turn. Make sure you stop regularly and try some unusual angles. Vary your aperture to throw some of the backgrounds out of focus and look for strong colours.

Places like the Rabbit Ranch and Chain of Rocks Bridge make great subjects. These places are off the main road and will be quiet so take your time, look for unusual angles and think about lens choice. Look for things to take you through the picture from left to right and make sure you set the right aperture to maximise depth of field. Both these shots were taken with a wide angle lens and were stopped down to f16. Beware of flare when shooting into the sun. St Louis is nearby and well worth a visit. Check out the Arch but have a look at visiting times if you want to go up inside as it varies throughout the year. The road system around and through St Louis was difficult to follow so make sure you allow plenty of time. 28

5

DAY 4 ST LOUIS TO SPRINGFIELD

217 MILES

A great days driving ending up at the Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven Motel. We stayed at Collinsville just outside of St Louise. Look out for the worlds largest Ketsup Bottle.

Meramec Caverns Make the short detour to the Meramec Caverns and take the tour down into the caverns. Be sure to take your tripod as the light displays are something else. See the hideout of Jesse James and listen to the light shows illuminating the caverns to the Star Spangled Banner! It sounds dreadful and it is - but give it a go. You will see some shots taken on the next few pages. If you are using a tripod remember to set the camera before you go into the dark. It’s probably best to have it on a low ISO like 100 or 200 and set the camera to timer if you don’t have a remote. Set onto AV and 31

34

let the camera work out the exposure. Use the exposure adjustment setting to under or over expose. This is a great stretch of the old road so check out the Jesse James Wax Museum and the Devils Elbow.

Lebanon Check out the Munger Moss Motel for classic neon. Then on to the Rail Haven. A highly recommended motel which gives a real flavour of Route 66.

Underexpose slightly to bring out the colours.

35

6

DAY 5 SPRINGFIELD TO OKLAHOMA CITY 286 MILES

This is one of the classic days on Route 66 where you will see some of the main sights and meet some great characters. You will also pass through a small corner of Kansas to add to your list of States visited along the route. Carthage, Galena Commerce, Foyil, Catoosa, Tulsa, Chandler and Arcadia are all worth a visit along the route ending up at Oklahoma City.

39

Gay Parita Sinclair Station and Garage This place is what Route 66 is about for me. A fantastic garage surrounded by old Route 66 memorabilia. If you are lucky enough to meet Gary then you are in for a treat. He will talk to you about the old days and show you around. Make sure you allow plenty of time to explore this little part of Route 66.

Living Legend Gary Turnerowner of the Gay Parita Sinclair Station and Garage.

40

Carthage Home of the 66 Drive-In and Iggys Diner. We also came across the Bugler Motor Co. - said to have been the inspiration for Mater in the Pixar ‘Cars’ movie.

42

Galena & Commerce There is lots of interest for the old Route 66 along this stretch with museums like the Galena Mining and Historical Museum. Motels like the Baxter Springs motel and restored filling station and museum also add interest. As well as the Painted Murals at Quapaw and the old mining town of Commerce. Also try to make time to visit the Totem Pole Park and Foyil.

HDR image of the Conoco Gas Stage at Commerce. 3 images taken at 2 stops exposure -2 / 0 / +2 and processed through Photomatix Pro.

44

Catoosa It’s difficult to miss this stop which offers great photo opportunities. It was built in 1972 by Hugh S Davis as a play area for his children. It became an attraction on Route 66 until it was closed in 1988. Now you can wander round and see the restored whale in all its glory.

Great colours and crops make this an interesting stop on route.

45

Stroud - Skyliner Motel

Chandler - Lincoln Motel

48

7

DAY 6 OKLAHOMA CITY TO TUCAMARI 369 MILES

This was the longest day traveling with the most distance covered. The reason for this was a stop at the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucamari. This was the best motel on the trip for that retro feel and I cannot recommend it enough. Make sure you get some spray cans for the Bug Ranch and Cadillac Ranch where you can add your own mark on Route 66. This part of trip is your first taste of the Wild West.

50

Hydro Lucilles Roadhouse - Great Route 66 Diner - stop for brunch.

Erick & Texola Get a real feel for the desolation caused to communities when the new highway effectively made these towns redundant. Check out the Tumbleweed Grill and Waterhole.

Texola - Population 36

51

Mclean & Groom Check out the Devils Rope (Barbwire) and Route 66 exhibition and look out for the leaning tower and 200 foot cross. You are now halfway through your trip with the weather getting warmer and the best of the trip still ahead of you.

HDR image of a fallen sign near the bug ranch. Above - Me at the half way point. 54

Bug Ranch and Cadillac Ranch These are two great stops for the photographer and a chance to express yourself with spray paint. The Bug Ranch was the quieter of the two and easier to take pictures without people in the background. Look out for close ups and use your depth of field by shooting wide open (F2.8- F4). See the shot of the Cadillacs on the next page.

56

Tucumari This was a request by Maria on the trip and I am so glad she suggested it. The Blue Swallow Motel is like stepping back into the 40’s and 50’s. The area around the Motel has a great feel and the owners are so helpful - even turning on the neon for us so that we could take some night time and early morning pictures. Our rooms all had a retro feel. There are some great motels on the trip but this was my favourite.

58

8

DAY 7 TUCAMARI - SANTA FE 179 MILES

This part of the trip takes on the pre 1937 route which takes you to Santa Fe. You get a real New Mexico feel in Santa Fe and it was an interesting place to stop and unwind after a long day traveling on day 6.

Santa Rosa Check out the Route 66 Auto Museum and Blue Hole

64

65

Santa Fe To explore, start off at the Plaza and wander round this compact city. There are plenty of cafes and bars including Plaza Cafe and Pink Adobe. You could bypass this part of the route as the later Route 66 followed the interstate to Albequerque. You could stop in Albequerque or push on to Holbrook if you wanted to save a day to use elsewhere.

67

9

DAY 8 SANTA FE - HOLBROOK 294 MILES

This is another day covering the miles and the open plains of the USA. There are great stops along the way and take time to detour through the National Parks of the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert. The goal for today is to end up at the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook. Your own concrete wigwam with old vehicles in the parking lot. Another iconic place to stay on Route 66 with a great sunset silhouetting the wigwams.

69

Albequerque Situated in the centre of New Mexico the city spreads along the banks of the Rio Grande. Check out Central Avenue’s 18 miles of diners, motels and neon. Old Town offers a taste of New Mexico’s Spanish Colonial past.

Grants Check out the Uranium Cafe.

Old Signs come thick and fast on this stretch of the road. Be prepared for plenty of stops.

71

Gallup Has some of the southwests largest trading posts and one of the best strips of neon signs you’ll see on Route 66. Take time to stop off at El Rancho preserved to its 1930’s glory and go inside for some atmospheric shots of this classic diner - home to stars like John Wayne.

Check out El Rancho. You may have to wind up the ISO to avoid camera shake. 72

Holbrook The Wigwam Motel. Have you slept in a wigwam lately? This is a great Route 66 experience and something you won’t forget. The rooms are spartan but great value. No coffee making facilities but the supermarket just across the road has great coffee and cakes! You need to be here at dusk and dawn to get some great shots.

At this stage the original Route 66 is gone. The telegraph poles are all that remain to show the old road 76

10

DAY 9 HOLBROOK TO FLAGSTAFF 91 MILES

This a short little stretch which covers Winslow, the Two Guns Trading Post and Twin Arrows. You may want to consider adding on a detour to Monument Valley which is North of Flagstaff rather than stopping in Flagstaff. I have added a chapter on Monument Valley and the View Hotel.

81

Winslow If you are a fan of the Eagles then you will want to be ‘standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona’ There is the corner, a bronze statue, a flat bed Ford and Eagles Memorabilia Shop. Check out the diner and old bank across the road.

82

Meteor Crater A meteor crater one mile across formed 50.000 years ago. A short detour off Route 66. Complete with space museum, cafe gift shop and theatre showing short films about the crater.

Because of the scale it’s difficult to do this justice in just one shot. This image is 6 images stitched using the panorama software Hugin. 84

11

MONUMENT VALLEY

Monument Valley Monument Valley is one of the most stunning places to visit in the USA. The View hotel is the place to stay as the hotel looks out over the valley and every room has a view of the sunrise. Rooms are reasonable out of peak season and this is the only hotel in the Navajo Park. There is a trail around the valley which takes a few hours and takes you to all the best views. Its pretty dusty and uneven so take care when driving around. The restaurant in the hotel is good for Navajo food. The next restaurant is a long way away so book your evening meal to avoid a long wait. This area has very little light pollution so is ideal for night shots and star trails. You can set up your tripod on your balcony and fire off a series of shots at say ISO 400, F8 every 30 seconds. You will need a remote to do this so you don’t move the camera between shots. Take around 30 plus shots then run them through some software such as Starstax. On the next few pages are some shots taken over the years from The View and in the valley. If you are only doing this trip once and don’t plan to come back then add this to your itinerary. You won’t be disappointed.

87

12

DAY 10 FLAGSTAFF - KINGMAN 165 MILES

This is my favourite stretch of Route 66 and a part that I have covered many times. The stretch from Kingman to Williams is covered in both of the trips we do to the USA. On our tour which takes in the National Parks we head North from Williams to the Grand Canyon which I will feature in a separate chapter and is well worth the short detour. When we start this trip we leave Las Vegas which is another great area for photography. I will include a chapter on Las

Vegas as another detour from the route. Williams, Hackberry and Kingman are iconic stops on this stretch of the Mother Road.

92

Williams Make sure you spend some time exploring this Route 66 town. This is a great place to pick up memorabilia and capture some great images. The Grand Canyon Railroad goes up into the Canyon from Williams - the train leaves first thing in the morning and returns in the evening. There is the old station and a static wild west train to photograph along with numerous shops and motels. The next few pages will give you flavour of the town. For a great milk shake and burger check out Twisters at the bottom end of town with the pink cadillac parked outside.

Change your angle to add impact to a picture.

95

Twisters interior given the HDR treatment.

96

Look for the more abstract like this wooden carving with good light to bring out the textures.

99

Seligman Find your way back onto the old stretch of Route 66 and you will pass through Seligman. Said to be the place the Movie ‘Cars’ is based on. Check out the Barber Shop owned by Angel Delgadillo founder of the Route 66 Association of Arizona.

Grand Canyon Caverns Take time out to visit the Caverns and take a guided tour. You can stay a night in the Cavern in the 1 room deep underground. Make sure you book in advance!

100

Hackberry

You could spend hours at Hackberry. Most photogenic place on Route 66.

101

107

13

GRAND CANYON

Grand Canyon Just a short 50 mile or so drive north from Williams brings you to the entrance to the National Park. Most of the shots in this section were taken along the South Rim Drive.

Image One taken through a window with fill flash to light the foreground. Whole shot underexposed by 1 stop to bring out colours. 109

14

LAS VEGAS

Las Vegas A few hours drive north of Route 66 but well worth a detour if you have the time. Stay in one of the hotels on the strip. I prefer to be in the middle near the Bellagio or Flamingo as you are in the heart of the action but there are loads of great hotels. We have used the Luxor, Flamingo and New York, New York which are all good mid range hotels. The town comes alive at night and if you have time visit Fremont which has a real old Vegas feel. During the day there are malls and casinos to visit. check out the photography galleries by Peter Lik which can be found in many of the Malls. You will find some inspirational shots of American landscapes. Another great place to visit is the Neon Sign Museum which has a collection of many of the old signs from demolished casinos. A neon graveyard with a guided tour and great photo opportunities.

Check out the iconic Las Vegas signs on the approaches to Vegas. There is a small car park by each to allow you to stop and take pictures. 113

15

DAY 11 KINGMAN - BARSTOW 194 MILES

I would like to mention the Eltravatore Motel at Kingman. This is another treat and highly recommended as an overnight stop. The hotel has been lovingly restored by its owners with themed rooms and great murals. I stayed in the Clint Eastwood room but there are all the iconic stars from John Wayne to Marilyn Monroe. Great value and the tallest neon sign on the Route. From Kingman you head across some arid landscape climbing over the pass to Oatman,

then travelling across one of the hottest places in the US. A stretch of the old road runs through the ghost towns of Goffs and Fenner. Look out for Roys Motel and Cafe and the Bagdad Cafe before arriving in Barstow. We stayed at the Route 66 Motel which is another quirky iconic motel which boasts round beds in all its rooms. Great for night time shots and a sunrise along the road.

121

Oatman Looks like a wild west film set, except for the people, cars and tourist shops! Was once an old gold mining town.

125

16

DAY 12 BARSTOW - SANTA MONICA 148 MILES

The final stretch of the Route taking you across the Mohave Desert to the outskirts of Los Angeles. You can stop at San Bernadino and see the original McDonalds which is now a museum, then drive through Pasadena and Beverly Hills. This will be the slowest part of the journey as the traffic heading into Los Angles is very congested. Allow plenty of time especially if you are planning to fly back from LAX. We stayed overnight at Santa Monica before

heading home. Check out the Ore Grande Bottle Tree Ranch. It is well worth a stop and is full of photographic opportunities. Check out the next few pages to see what I mean.

131

Santa Monica This is the end of the trip. The sign to the left is on the pier but the Will Rogers Highway plaque where Santa Monica Boulevard meets Ocean Avenue marks the official end of your journey.

136

AND FINALLY...

To all those who embark on this amazing journey I wish you all the best and I hope you have as much fun as we did.

I hope to see you on one of my photography trips in the future...
