Last autumn, something special happened within the inspiring spaces of The Box (Plymouth). A group from the international community joined us, cameras in hand, to explore their creativity and share their stories.
Over ten weeks we learned photography and saw the world through each other’s lenses. These workshops weren’t just about photography; they were about connection. Every Tuesday afternoon transformed into a space of learning. Cameras led to conversations and new friendships formed.
Guided by the exhibitions at The Box, we started with Planet Ocean, exploring themes of water, migration, and our relationship with the natural world. As the weeks went on, we responded to the work of Ingrid Pollard, using her art as a springboard for our own reflections on identity, place, and belonging.
It didn’t matter whether someone had used a camera before or if it was their first time picking one up. These workshops were about the process and connection. Each photograph adding to a bigger picture - building personal resilience, creativity and growing a sense of home here in Plymouth.
Thank you to the wonderful team at The Box who welcomed us into their space, the kind supporters of our Crowdfunder campaign and the community partners who helped spread the word. We were able to provide these workshops free of charge, with all the equipment and guidance our participants needed.
The International Photography Workshop was a fantastic celebration of Plymouth’s diversity, the power of creativity, and the ways in which art can bring us closer together.
This zine captures some of the magic, the photos, the moments, and the stories that emerged. It’s a reflection of what happens when we create space for people to share their perspectives, one frame at a time.
International Photo was a ten week course run in partnership with The Box in autumn 2024, with the intention of enhancing wellbeing and connection through the learning and practice of photography.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
And thanks to our Community Photographer, Emma, and amazing volunteer Greg, for running this programme.
“...a highlight of mine was realising within myself that I could start to become used to using a digital camera, being inspired by some of the photos taken by others and the sharing within the group...”
“...most importantly (the project has) encouraged me to keep stepping outside of my comfort zone to enable me to grow...”
“...this is a great project, I had a wonderful and productive time... it helps people to discover the wonderful world of photography...”
“...for me the most enjoyable moments were our practical sessions and the socialising during the process. We took pictures of each other, shared them and it brought us closer together...”
