WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Cruising can open up a whole new world of experiences for intrepid travellers, and an experience that tops the list for many of us is getting up close and personal to wild or exotic animals in their natural habitats. We take a look at some of the cruise lines, large and small, that are famed for their wildlife-centric itineraries; taking passengers to far-flung corners of the world to live out their dreams.

CRUISE TO THE CRADLE OF LIFE Africa. A continent that is synonymous with wildlife and nature, and always front of mind when it comes to wild animal encounters. Whilst it's true that cruise lines are somewhat logistically-restricted in respect of the national parks they can visit - having to focus their itineraries around the location of cruise ports - this in no way means that you are stuck for choice! 6 Cruising Magazine

Perhaps the most popular, and practical, port of call for African safari cruises is Port Elizabeth - close to South Africa's third-largest national park 'Addo'. You can visit this malariafree region on a half-day excursion by 4x4 and go in search of the famous 'Big Five' (elephants, buffalo, rhino, lions, leopards). For those of you wishing to go a little further inland to visit another reserve, consider adding a pre or post safaripark stay when you book your cruise. River cruise fans will also be pleased to know that there is a way to experience Africa's wildlife at your leisure, with a cruise along the Chobe River with luxury operator AmaWaterways. Their boutique cruiser, the Zambezi Queen, enables you to spot elephants, giraffes, leopards, lions, zebras and more all from the comfort of your balcony. Travel with... Silversea Cruises, AmaWaterways, Oceania Cruises,

TRACK TIGERS IN INDIA Tigers are beautiful, but elusive creatures. This is just one reason why seeing one in the wild is an honour that too few are able to experience. India is home to 70% of all tigers found in the world, so if you are yearning for a glimpse of our stripey friends at the top of the food chain, there is no better destination to head to. Far Horizons offer a wildlife-packed agenda as part of their sailings along the Brahmaputra River, which flows through India's bountiful Assam region. In addition to sighting wildlife from on board the ship, the M.V Mahabaahu, activities off the ship are aimed at providing an insight into the 'real India', with opportunities to explore the Kaziranga National Park for a spot of Tiger tracking. The Park boasts the highest density of tigers among the protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. It is also home to

two-thirds of the world’s Great Onehorned rhinoceros as well as large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo and swamp deer. You can also combine cruising with an India land-stay including visits to Ranthambore National Park, near Jaipur, with a selection of mainstream and specialist cruise lines. Travel with... Far Horizons of India, Azamara Club Cruises. APT Ganges Voyager, Noble Caledonia

P-P-PICK UP PENGUIN FEVER IN ANTARCTICA Far from an inhabitable environment, Antarctica is simply teaming with wildlife in the form of both birds and sea creatures, with perhaps its most famous inhabitants being the penguin. Travelling with an increasingly large selection of specialist expedition cruise lines along with more traditional luxury operators, penguinfans will be pleased to discover just how close you can get to gentoo, chinstrap, adelie penguins and more. Be sure to bring your camera as these friendly creatures aren't shy - they simply love to strut their stuff for visitors... well, you have gone all that way.

Travel with... Hurtigruten, Quark Expeditions, Princess Cruises, Poseidon Expeditions, Silversea, Seabourn

SPLASH WITH DOLPHINS IN THE CARIBBEAN Referred to as 'angels of the sea', dolphins are renowned for their inquisitiveness and friendliness, making them popular with children and adults alike. Swimming with dolphins has long held its place on 'must do' lists and encountering our gentle yet playful creatures is an experience you are unlikely to forget in hurry. With such a popular activity, it's important to note that swimming with dolphin excursions fill up fast, so be sure to reserve your place prior to departure. Princess Cruises' 'Dolphin Encounter' is an Animal Planet recommended excursion and takes place at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, while both Carnival Cruises & Disney Cruise Line operate their dolphin experiences out of 'Dolphinaris', Cozumel. The latter also includes snorkelling with tropical fish, as well as ocean kayaking and paddle boarding for those feeling a little more active. Travel with... Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines, Disney Cruise Lines

WITNESS ONE-OFA-KIND WILDLIFE IN THE GALAPAGOS No article on wildlife cruising is complete without mentioning the Galapagos. This remote part of the world, off the coast of Ecuador, is home to 1,900 unique species of wildlife! The interference of humans has been kept to an absolute minimum here in order to preserve the integrity of the archipelago's flora and fauna, making a Galapagos cruise an absolute must for nature lovers. You can snorkel, hike, swim, sea kayak, scuba dive and surf amidst land and marine iguanas, giant tortoise, finches, frigatebirds, blue-footed boobies, albatross and more as part of a Galapagos cruise excursion with a variety of specialist cruise lines. A TRIP TO THE GALAPAGOS

Sailing on Celebrity Xpedition with Leon Hand Brand Training manager - Celebrity Cruises

I was lucky to be sent to experience the Galapagos Islands with Celebrity Cruises in order to be able to share my first-hand experience with customers and travel agent partners alike. I spent a week sailing on Celebrity Xpedition, which is a 100-berth mega-yacht. A luxurious home-from-home and the perfect base to explore the Galapagos Islands in-depth. What’s more, this trip is 100% all-inclusive, including all shore excursions, Wi-Fi, plus tours and transfers in Ecuador. Each day gives you a chance to discover 2 ports of call so it is an active schedule – certainly not a chill out or total relaxing holiday. Breakfast precedes the first port, and you normally disembark at around 9.30/10am on a high-tec Zodiac boat to explore one of the 13 islands that we visit. Each Zodiac takes 14 passengers so groups are small, and, of course, a qualified Galapagos National Park naturalist will guide you for the whole shore experience. Kitted out with your own wetsuit and snorkelling gear, all included in the price; there are plenty of chances to go snorkelling and spend time in the gorgeous waters of the Pacific, getting to know the bright and beautiful rare marine life, and if you are lucky one of the playful sea lions! A choice of mild or active excursions are offered on each port of call. Shore excursion lasts about 2 hours, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, with a delicious lunch in the main restaurant or freshly barbecued chicken, steak or seafood on the Beagle Grill up on the main deck outside. Evening time on board is very relaxed. Every night at 6.30pm everyone,

gathers in the main lounge to get a full 20 minute brief on the next day. Displaying pictures of the wildlife of that island or port of call, full maps and routes for any walks or hikes, and lots if interesting info on the next island to visit to whet the appetite and excite your sense of adventure! I wasn’t disappointed when it came to being able to view all of my favourite animals close-up. Such as the bluefooted booby, the infamous marine iguana and the iconic giant Galapagos tortoises native to Santa Cruz Island, which is the most highly populated of the 5 inhabited islands in the Galapagos. (20,000 people live in its biggest town Puerto Ayora, which incidentally is where we feature the hotel and activity programme for our brand new 3 night post-cruise stay)

RECIPE

Galapagos' famous Ceviche Ceviche is perhaps the most famous of the Galapagos dishes, which is one or more types of fish or seafood covered with thinly sliced tomatoes, onions and with enough lime juice to fill a bowl. It’s eaten with a spoon, like a cold soup. Prep Time: 20 minutes plus 1 hour 30 minutes in lime juice

INGREDIENTS • 500g firm white fish fillets, such as haddock, halibut or pollack, skinned and thinly sliced • 150g cooked king prawns • juice 8 limes, plus extra wedges to serve • 1 red onion, sliced into rings • handful pitted green olives, finely chopped • 2-3 green chillies, finely chopped

• 2-3 tomatoes, seeded and chopped into 2cm pieces • bunch coriander, roughly chopped • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil • good pinch caster sugar • tortilla chips, to serve

INSTRUCTIONS In a large bowl, combine the fish, lime juice and onion. The juice should completely cover the fish; if not, add more until it does. Cover with cling

film and refrigerate for 1 hr 30 mins. Remove the fish and onion from the lime juice (discard the juice) and place in a bowl. Stir in the prawns, olives, chillies, tomatoes, coriander and olive oil. Season generously with a pinch of salt and sugar. This can be made a couple of hours in advance and stored in the fridge. Serve with tortilla chips to scoop up the ceviche and enjoy with a glass of cold beer. Cruising Magazine 9

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK With it becoming an increasingly popular port of call for many of the leading cruise lines, Antwerp boasts many fascinating points of interest such as the Antwerp Fashion Museum – MoMu, the Rubenshuis, the MAS museum as well as attractive architecture ranging from medieval buildings to contemporary. Only a short journey from Antwerp is the delightful city of Mechelen. This small, compact and cosy city was named one of the 10 European cities of the future by the Financial Times. This picturesque city is big on charm and history, thriving with quaint shops, car-free areas and pleasant little squares. The grace of centuriesold palaces and majestic churches appeals to everyone. There are no less than 336 listed buildings and monuments, including eight gothic and baroque churches from the 14th17th century. The Begijnhofkerk is especially unique, with its feminine art schemes and pastel colours.

THE LOCAL EXPERIENCE Referred to as the Moon Extinguishers (Maneblussers), locals inherited this name on the night of 27th/28th January 1687 when a none too sober tippler emerged from an inn on the Grote Markt and suddenly saw that the tower was on fire. Immediately raising the alarm, the whole city was thrown into confusion. Little had the brave citizens realised that the reddish, misty glow they were trying to extinguish was the moonlight. Of course, the people of Mechelen tried to keep the incident quiet, but the news soon spread abroad, earning the people of Mechelen the nickname they bear to this day.

Did you know?

THERE’S FREE WI-FI ALL ACROSS THE CITY.

When not in the bars drinking the local brew, locals enjoy the surroundings of Mechelen, including the Vrijbroekpark with its beautiful rose gardens and outdoor sports facilities.

SOME OF THE CITY’S LOCAL DELICACIES INCLUDE: • Mechelen Cuckoo – Mechelse koekoek (chicken) • The Golden Carolus Beer – Het Anker Brewery • Maneblussertjes - crunchy moon-shaped biscuits that are glazed or filled with chocolate

THE FUTURE IS... INNOVATIVE! Innovation is often hailed as the key to longevity, and when it comes to the cruising industry this has never been more true. Far from the traditional cruise ships of old, the past few years have seen more and more ships introduce innovative new features (robotic bartenders anyone?) in a bid to keep their passengers entertained and to attract a new breed of travellers to life on the high seas. Whilst technological innovation is here to stay, this doesn't mean that we are destined for a future of gadgets and wizardry or ships with no soul, however. Innovation also means new on-board concepts, specialist experiences and themed cruises designed to appeal to all tastes. Here's a brief look at what we can look forward to over the next couple of years (tech and all!)...

CELEBRITY GIVE CRUISING THE EDGE We've been hearing a lot about 'Edge' over the last couple of years - a new concept from Celebrity Cruises designed to revolutionise 'Modern Luxury' for life. Hailed as one of the most innovative, exciting and 'transformation' ships ever designed, the 2918-passenger Celebrity Edge, due to launch in 2018, will feature a Rooftop Garden and 'Magic Carpet' platform capable of scaling four decks in between its chameleonlike role as (take a deep breath now) specialty restaurant, openair pool area, al fresco dining area and luxury embarkation station! When it comes to stateroom innovations, the new Edge Staterooms will offer an infinite balcony concept, which turns the whole room into a walkout veranda at the touch of a button, whilst their spacious 'Edge Villas' will treat guests to their own private terrace complete with inviting plunge pool.

AMAMAGNA CHANGES THE GAME FOR RIVER CRUISING No it's not a river ship powered by volcanic matter, 'AmaMagna' is the name given to luxury river cruise operator AmaWaterways' new ship, set to launch in 2019. Representing a new concept for river cruise lines, this new double-width ship will not only help to fulfil increasing demand for river cruising but debuts a quieter and more fuel-efficient engine along with a water-sports platform offering zodiac boats, canoes and other recreational equipment - a first for river cruise lines. The AmaMagna will be sailing a selection of Danube itineraries which incorporate a number of adventures for food-lovers along with new wellness offerings.

boast a striking new interior and exterior design with new innovative features including an 'all weather entertainment space' in the form of a clear sky dome on the top deck, and glass walls across three decks designed to bring the 'inside-out'.

SYMPHONY IS MUSIC TO ADRENALINESEEKERS EARS Royal Caribbean International is currently building the world's biggest cruise ship - Symphony of the Seas - sailings on which are already available to book. Fourth in their record-breaking Oasis Class, Symphony will not only feature more staterooms than Harmony of the Seas, but a new selection of adrenaline-pumping activities both on board and off the ship.

Several of the same features from its predecessor Harmony will be found on board, including the 10-storey Ultimate Abyss waterslide and the Bionic Bar. Yet new innovations are still shrouded in secrecy! She’ll be sailing around the Mediterranean from Barcelona in Summer 2018, before heading to the new Royal Caribbean-built Port of Miami, dubbed the 'Crown of Miami'. The port is hailed as the USA's most innovative cruise port - its design looks like a giant when looked at from east or west, and a crown when viewed from the water! Ask your Cruising expert for information on how to book your next cruise aboard one of these innovative new ships.

HURTIGRUTEN'S ELECTRIC REVOLUTION The Norwegian Fjords are one of northern Europe's most beautiful and pristine destinations, so it makes sense for cruise lines to do as much as they can to preserve its natural assets. Norway specialist Hurtigruten is making the most of 'innovation' to ensure that they play their part in this with the launch of two new hybrid expedition ships. Using a new and environmentally sustainable hybrid technology, Hurtigruten aim to reduce the fuel consumption by around 20% in addition to introducing fully electric propulsion on a passenger ship for the first time. Hurtigruten currently advocates for all ships to turn off their engines while sailing in and out of harbour cities, ban the use of heavy fuel oil and make it obligatory to connect to shore power in a bid to minimise their environmental footprint.

P&O CRUISES' INCREDIBLE HULK Following in the 'green theme', P&O's forthcoming new ship will not only be its largest yet (holding 1,553 passengers more than 'Britannia'), she will also be its greenest. Powered by LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), a cleanburning fossil fuel, the ship is set to adhere new maritime rules on harmful emissions - minimising damage done to the marine environment. Designed exclusively for the British market, the ship is due to launch in 2020 and will also Cruising Magazine 19

SO FAR, 2017 IS CRUISING

Roundup of facts & figures from the cruise industry

There are many amazing reasons to take a cruise holiday, one of which is to be a part of a continued trend of growth. Last year, 1.9 million of us from the UK & Ireland took a cruise holiday with optimism that 2017 growth will push this number over the 2 million mark. This would represent a 50% increase in cruisers within just 10 years. Cruising was not the only holiday sector to grow last year, with an estimated 6% rise in the overall number of foreign holiday bookings and similar growth in package holiday sales. The potential for further increases in the cruise market remains substantial with the global industry currently committed to more than 70 new ships over the next 10 years. In 2017, there is every chance that the total number of UK passengers

choosing to cruise from a UK port will top the million mark for the first time with more ships basing themselves in the UK & Ireland for part or all of the season. Most popular UK-UK destinations were in the Western Mediterranean last year, this was followed by Norway.

up with many new vessels containing ocean equivalent facilities. Whilst much growth has come in European river cruising, where the Rhine and Danube remain most popular, destinations in the Far East have seen continued increases as this part of the world becomes more accessible.

The Mediterranean is also the most popular choice for fly-cruisers, followed by the Caribbean. This is reflected by the number of ships and the variation of cruise companies operating in these areas.

It is heartening to see this continued growth in all areas of cruising and, although certain destinations remain the most popular, the world is opening further with more intensity and greater product diversity than we have ever seen.

Whilst ocean cruising remains firmly as the largest area of the cruise sector, river cruising is on the up and

There has never been a better time to cruise.

RIVER OF DREAMS, TALKING FRED. OLSEN RIVER CRUISES

with Managing Director Mike Rodwell WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO EXPAND INTO THE RIVER CRUISE MARKET?

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ move into river cruising is a natural extension to what we offer as a brand: ‘closer’ cruising, incorporating some of the very best scenic sailing, combined with a relaxed British style, and a friendly, welcoming atmosphere on board. In recent years, we have found that the river cruises that we operate across our ocean-going fleet are amongst our most popular. We have also discovered that our current ocean guests are interested in taking a river cruise with us, and we therefore believe that there is an appetite for the unique kind of river cruise experience that we are offering. Backed by the reliability of the Fred. Olsen brand and underpinned by our industry-leading ‘Enjoyment Promise’, we are confident that there will be high demand for our style of river cruising – and early sales are very encouraging. 28 Cruising Magazine

WHAT IS THE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE GOING TO BE ON BOARD? Our river cruise boat, Brabant, accommodates just 156 guests, which means that holidaymakers will be able to experience a welcoming country house hotel atmosphere on board, with an intimate ‘home-from-home’ feel. As the majority of our river cruise guests will be British – in keeping with our ocean cruises – we will be offering a quintessentially British experience on board. Guests can expect to feel right at home on Brabant, with English spoken throughout and all transactions conducted in Pounds Sterling. The British taste will also be reflected in the cuisine, customer service and shore tours on offer. Built in 2006, 110-metre-long Brabant is a classic and comfortable river cruise boat, with bright and spacious public areas, stylish cherry wood interiors combined with contemporary colours, well-equipped bedrooms, and ample deck space, from which to enjoy the superb views. With just four decks – Haydn Deck 1, Strauss Deck 2, Mozart Deck 3 and Sun Deck 4 – and fewer

than 80 rooms and suites, staffed by 40 crew members, Brabant has the ‘closer’ feel that Fred. Olsen’s guests know and love.

HOW WILL THIS EXPERIENCE DIFFER FROM YOUR OCEAN SHIPS? Whilst we will continue to offer the same high levels of service and quality that we do across our oceangoing fleet, Brabant is clearly a much smaller vessel, meaning that guests will be able to benefit from an even more intimate experience on board. On our river cruises, we will be offering one-seating dinner, no assigned tables and a smart casual dress code, which differs from our ocean product. Wi-Fi will also be included. Also, as the focus is purely upon ‘European’ river cruises, rather than exploring worldwide destinations, the ports of call are much closer to home for British guests. All in all, we feel that our river cruise product will give guests a much wider choice of holiday options with Fred. Olsen, and it is likely that our repeat guests will look to take a mix of ocean and river cruises throughout the year with us.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE NAME BRABANT? We are very proud of our many decades of cruise expertise and rich sailing heritage, and the name Brabant harks back to Fred. Olsen’s historic passenger ship of the same name from the 1920s. The names of all of our ocean cruise ships – Balmoral, Braemar, Boudicca and Black Watch – start with a ‘B’, so it also made sense for our river cruise boat to follow suit.

WHAT TYPE OF CUSTOMER DO YOU THINK BRABANT WILL MAINLY APPEAL TO? We know that the majority of our guests will be British, and that they are likely to be over-50, in line with our ocean cruise customers. Brabant’s guests will be looking for a smaller-ship river cruise experience, with the ‘home from home’ ambience and ‘Britishness’ that they expect from the Fred. Olsen brand – even to the extent of English mustard and Marmite being available on board! We are expecting a high number of our existing ocean guests to book our Brabant cruises, as well as a significant percentage of ‘newto-river-cruise’ and ‘new-to-Fred.’ customers, and we will be actively targeting both of these markets. We anticipate that Brabant will attract guests who are keen to experience scenic cruising and getting ‘right to the heart’ of the destinations, with everything just a short distance away. Shore excursions will reflect the fact that the British like to take the opportunity to explore a destination more thoroughly, and we will also be offering comprehensive tips and advice to those guests who wish to discover the destination independently. As Brabant will be offering European fly-cruise sailings, with durations generally shorter than those of our ocean itineraries – of between five and 25 nights – these itineraries will appeal to those wishing to take a cruise holiday closer to home. And with the majority of our river cruises being of only seven nights, this is the ideal duration for those who are working, with limited annual leave.

DO YOU THINK BRABANT COULD BE THE FIRST OF MANY IN THE RIVER SECTOR AND IF SO, HOW

MIGHT THIS EFFECT YOUR FUTURE INVESTMENT IN OCEAN CRUISING? Brabant and our ocean fleet are two entirely separate operations, and our investment in our river product will not impact upon our ongoing commitment to our ocean fleet. We are currently undertaking an extensive programme of upgrades and refurbishment for our ocean ships; Black Watch was the first to benefit at the end of 2016, and Balmoral and Braemar will follow at the end of this year, with Boudicca being completed in Spring 2018.

larger river boats cannot, such as sailing the Moselle to Bernkastel – the most scenic part of the journey – with only smaller river boats being able to moor and turn at the beautiful medieval town of Bernkastel-Kues. Similarly, the stunning city of Strasbourg is only accessible to smaller river boats, whereas the larger vessels have to moor in Kehl, on the German side of the Rhine. Fred. Olsen River Cruises’ Brabant programme will run from 5th April to 3rd November 2018.

There is potential for us to expand our river cruise product in the coming years, if this is what our customers demand, and we have chartered Brabant for two cruise seasons, so we are confident that this is a long-term venture for us….but who knows what the future will bring?

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THE ITINERARIES THAT YOU DID? Our river itineraries build upon all the elements for which Fred. Olsen is renowned: ‘closer’, scenic cruise experiences; ‘hidden gem’ destinations; and helping our guests to see and discover more ashore. So, just like our ocean cruises, we have put together a range of carefully-crafted itineraries – with exciting destinations and differing durations – to ensure that our guests are able to get the most out of their Fred. Olsen river cruise experience. Examples of river cruises on board Brabant for 2018 include: Düsseldorf, Germany to Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Düsseldorf to Nuremberg, Germany; Nuremberg to Budapest, Hungary; Budapest to Hirsova (Bucharest), Romania; Düsseldorf to Basel, Switzerland; and Hirsova (Bucharest) to Düsseldorf. Our river cruise itineraries have something for everyone, from sailing the breath-taking Danube, to enjoying a ‘taster’ cruise to Amsterdam when the tulips are in full bloom. Importantly, we have also incorporated a large amount of scenic cruising in daylight hours, so that our guests can make the most of the spectacular scenery on offer at the best time of the day. One of the key ‘USPs’ of a Fred. Olsen river cruise is that Brabant can offer destination experiences that the other

WELCOME ABOARD THE G EXPEDITION

Big ship, big continent, and even bigger adventures The Arctic. A land of perpetual winter. A barren hinterland of vast icefields beneath staggering glaciers and rocky peaks. The midnight sun beating down on the cool blue water. It’s a landscape that demands dedication and rewards with beauty and awe – one that has dared man to explore its depths for centuries. And with the G Expedition, now it’s your turn.

A WORLD OF GOOD The G Expedition is G Adventures’ polar expedition ship, designed to bring you even closer to places that will stay with you forever. For over 25 years, G Adventures has been a global leader in small-group tours, connecting travellers to the world’s greatest destinations in ways they simply couldn’t achieve on their own. Every one of their adventures has been designed to deliver must-do highlights, spontaneous situations, personal freedom, and under-theradar encounters with local people. And when you travel with G Adventures, you get so much more than the adventure of a lifetime. You become part of a worldwide social enterprise that supports small local businesses and helps the communities you will visit to help themselves.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE ARCTIC The G Expedition not only steers you to the ends of the Earth in comfort and care, it does so with a highly-skilled team of onboard experts and fleet of Zodiac boats, there to bring you closer than ever to the otherworldly wildlife and haunting beauty of the Arctic. G Adventure’s Arctic expedition season runs from June to September, much of which sees a never-setting sun – great for taking in views

from the ship’s deck. A birder and wildlife enthusiast’s paradise, you’ll get plenty of chances to see polar bears, walruses, reindeer, whales, dolphins, puffins, and more. After all, what’s a trip to the ends of the Earth without some rare sightings? Daily excursions get you off the ship to explore foreign waters and shores. Our fleet of Zodiac boats, included exclusive parka, and complimentary waterproof boots get you ashore quickly and comfortably. And for an even closer look, opt for Arctic kayaking so you can paddle right up to the floe edge. On-board experts are there to answer questions and provide greater insight and appreciation of the Arctic. Their team is comprised of professional and highly skilled historians, marine

biologists, and naturalists. And with one of the highest ratios of expedition team members to guests, you’re sure to always learn something. Attend an on-board lecture or info session to get prepared before heading to shore.

SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Come join an extraordinary adventure (at an unreasonably reasonable price). You’ll return home a different person than when you left. G Adventures can’t wait to show you the world. To book, see back page for contact details.

With the city’s cruise terminal recognised as one of the most passenger friendly in North America, it is no wonder 900,000 passengers choose to sail to or from the port each year. But Vancouver is not all that Western Canada has to offer. Journeying along rail routes steeped in history from the Gold Rush era is the Rocky Mountaineer, recently voted the Best Luxury Rail Service. Taking you through the heart of the Canadian Rockies and past some of the most spectacular scenery Mother Nature has to offer, Rocky Mountaineer allows you to carve through otherwise inaccessible terrain. As you travel along any one of the four different rail routes, your attentive train hosts will ensure no wildlife sighting goes unseen. They will also enhance your trip by indulging you in myths, legends and local history as each picturesque scene glides past your window– Canadians are great storytellers after all. Whilst you sit back and take in the awe-inspiring mountain ranges, the onboard executive chefs will delight your taste buds with gourmet, locally sourced food, fine wines and beers brewed within this captivating part of the world. At the end of your day’s journey, you can be assured of a comfortable hotel room – no sleeper bunks here.
