Rebuilt several times throughout history, the city was abandoned as a capital after it was all but destroyed by earthquakes in 1839. Day 6. Bagan Today begins with a visit to the Anada Temple, the best preserved of all the temples known as the “Westminster Abbey of Burma”. After see Shwezigone Pagoda, one of the country’s most significant religious sites, before an exciting visit to the bustling Nyaung-U market. Mingle with the locals and browse the wares that are sold at this trade hub. Visit a range of distinctive structures such as Gubyaukgyi Temple, a 13th-century ‘cave temple’ with an Indian-style spire, before you head to a lacquerware workshop and a sunset viewing. Built in the year 1059 by King Anawrahta, the pagoda is known to house the sacred Buddda relic donated by King Vizaraba of Sri Lanka. Following lunch on board, cruise to the village of Salay, a colourful religious centre. Visit Yoke Sone Kyaung, the region’s oldest surviving wooden monastery resplendent with spectacular wood carvings and ancient religious artefacts. Magwe Awake today to the glorious scenery along the Irrawaddy River as you begin sailing downstream to the sleepy delta town of Magwe. Upon arrival this afternoon, visit the Mya Tha Lun Pagoda which is located on the top of the Naguttama Hill. It overlooks the riverbank and is the largest shrine in the region


featuring a gleaming gilded stupa. During October there is a Pagoda festival held here nearly two thousand monks lighting of nine thousand candles. Minhla, Thayetmyo Stop in the town of Minhla, the site of a significant battle during the Third Anglo-Burmese War, which was the inspiration for a Rudyard Kipling poem. Take a boat to visit Minhla fort, built by Italian engineers in 1860 to keep British forces out of Burma. Later, cruise to Thayetmyo, a pleasant port town that once sat on the British colonial border between Upper Burma and Lower Burma. Historians and archaeologists maintain that the pagoda was built by the Mon people between the 6th and 10th centuries. Myanaung This morning as you cruise out of Pyay, absorb wonderful views of the Akauk Mountains and their river-facing cliff carvings as you continue along the Irrawaddy. Zalon Continue south along the Irrawaddy Delta to the delta town of Ainteloge. You’ll set off on a guided walking tour, taking in the towns many colonial-style wooden houses and gardens.
