Norway’s tastiest traditions... In keeping with our Norwegian theme, we have selected two popular Norwegian dishes for you to try at home...

06

Welcome to the first edition of Cruising Magazine for 2017.

Norwegian Meatballs Beef Stew (Lapskaus)

Featured Destination: Discover the beauty of Noway’s Fjords.

This issue features one of cruising fans’ most popular destinations, the Norwegian Fjords, along with some of the more unique ‘special interest’ cruises available in the market today. We also take a look at expedition cruises for the more intrepid travellers amongst you, and for those who like to start their holiday as soon as possible, we include a range of ‘ex-uk’ cruises departing from regional ports across the country. Another popular way to extend your cruise holiday is to add on a hotel stay or land tour before or after your cruise – take a look at page 29 for some inspiration as to the best ‘add-ons’ to some of our most popular destinations.

‘Mors Kjøttkaker’ are arguably the most traditional dish of Norway. On Norwegian Independence Day (17th May), many people serve them with a cabbage stew, mushed peas, boiled potatoes and gravy. It’s a healthy and hearty meal for all of the family.

Norway's Fjords

6 Cruising Magazine

Some of Mother Nature’s finest work can be seen amongst the Fjords and valleys of Norway. Formed during the last Ice Age by mighty glaciers that carved out the rock-faces and cliffs to form stunning lakes and inlets surrounded by majestic mountains; the Fjords are Norway’s number one attraction and for good reason. Exploring the Fjords by cruise ship is one of the best ways to experience these stunning natural phenomena up close and personal. Many can also be visited during excursions from cities such as Bergen, Olso and Tromso. We give you an overview of some of the country’s most jaw-dropping fjords and what you can look forward to when you get there.

GEIRANGERFJORD

TROLLFJORD

Surrounded by majestic peaks, lush green cliffs and thundering waterfalls, the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord is one of the more popular highlights of a Norwegian Fjords cruise. There are several ways to enjoy the fjords, aside from admiring them from the decks of a cruise ship, including: kayaking, rafting, hiking or cycling its spectacular surroundings.

Found between the Lofoten Islands and Vesteralen archipelago, the Trollfjord is one of the country’s most exotic fjords with an extremely narrow entrance and spectacularly steep mountain sides. Only the most compact of ships can traverse its narrow waters, and once you are through, keep your eyes peeled for the flocks of native Sea Eagles that roam the skies here.

SOGNEFJORD The longest (and deepest) fjord in Norway boasts several ‘branches’ including the UNESCO-listed Naeroyfjord, surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, and the Lusterfjord, which has inspired artists with its unique beauty. The area around Sognefjord is renowned for its fresh pastures and abundance of fruit, berries and game, along with delicious goats cheese. Popular also with hikers, you can find no less than five fantastic national parks and valleys within the region where you can enjoy rock climbing, mountain biking and more.

HARDANGERFJORD The ‘Queen of the Fjords’, Hardangerfjord is the 3rd longest fjord in the world at 179km. The Hardanger region is synonymous with Norwegian folk culture and famed for some of the country’s most amazing hikes. It is also home to one of Norway’s most popular waterfalls, the Steinsdalsfodden, which is special in that you can walk behind it without getting wet, thanks to the overhanging cliff face that shelters its visitors.

THE ARCTIC CIRCLE In addition to visiting the country’s many fjords, you can also venture further north to Kirkenes and the Arctic Circle. Some specialist cruise operators will also take you up to Svalbard for a true ‘Arctic’ cruise where you can see whales, seals, arctic foxes, polar bears and more. With such a wide variety of cruise lines and ship types heading to Norway’s Fjords, from small expedition-style ships, to mainstream and luxury vessels there is a lot of choice out there. Whether you choose a taster cruise or 7 night sailing or something a little longer, a cruise is a fantastically affordable way to experience this stunning part of the world.

FJORD FACTS • The peak Norway season is June to August, however to avoid the crowds, consider May or September too – just remember to wrap up a little warmer! • Trolls feature heavily in Norwegian folklore and according to the tales, are turned to stone if they do not hide before the sun rises. One of the most beautiful fjords of Norway, Trollfjord, is said to be inhabited by a vast amount of trolls, as is Hardangerfjord. • Sognefjord was one of the most important Viking trading routes, connecting villages Sogn and Bergen, and enabling villagers to transport fish, berries and fruits to local markets. • Fjords were created through several ice ages. Formed by giant glacier tongues that subsequently shaped the landscape, a fjord can be described as a u-shaped undersea valley. • The Norwegian Fjord Horse, or Fjord Horse, is thought to be one of the world's oldest breed of horse.

LYSEFJORD Over in the Stavanger region, lies the Lysefjord, home to the ‘infamous’ Pulpit Rock, often referred to as the most spectacular viewpoint in the world. Soaring 2000ft above Lysefjord, Pulpit Rock can be reached via a 3 hour hike from Stavanger itself. Alternatively, you can experience Lysefjord from the water on a refreshing cruise where you can explore its idyllic islands, waterfalls and plentiful nature.

Culinary Delicacies

from around the globe The world is such an interesting place, not least thanks to the weird and wonderful gastronomic ‘delights’ that can be found within its towns and cities. From Italian quirks to Inuit feasts, we take a little look at some of the more unusual examples out there…

SNAKE WINE Found in a number of Asian countries, including Vietnam where it originated, this is said to contain a number of medicinal benefits, including a cure for hair-loss and a boosted libido! Generally made by fermenting a whole snake (usually venomous) within a bottle of rice wine, it is not dangerous as the snake poison is inactivated by the ethanol in the alcohol.

CASU MARZ

WITCHETTY GRUB

A traditional Sardinian cheese milk made from Sheep, Casu Marz is famous for the live insect larvae it contains. Literally translated as ‘rotten cheese’ it is illegal to buy outside of Sardinia.

Fans of ‘I’m a Celebrity’ will no doubt have come across these little blighters already. A staple diet for Indigenous Australians, the Witchetty Grub is ‘bushmeat’ at its best. It can be eaten raw or lightly cooked, closely resembling scrambled egg.

KIVIAK A traditional Inuit Winter feast, Kiviak was created to avoid starvation throughout the long dark winter months in Greenland. Made from fermented birds sealed inside a seal carcass and left for several months, it may sound rather repugnant, but can be a lifesaver!

WASP CRACKERS A delicacy in Japan, these cookiestyle crackers, “Jibachi Senbe” apparently don’t taste as bad as they sound. Available to buy in the city of Nagano in the Chubu region of Japan, as well as on Amazon, they are said to pack a fierce punch, containing 81% protein – the highest percentage of any insect.

Your Cruise Calendar Where to go and when Often half the problem when choosing where to go on your next cruise holiday is deciding what time of year to go and why. This is especially true if you have a particular reason for visiting such as wanting to witness natural phenomena, to seek out wildlife or simply to make the most of good weather.

JANUARY - FEBRUARY It’s hard to beat a journey to Antarctica in January, especially if seeing cute little penguin chicks is top of your list! Seabirds and seals are also very active this time of year, whilst moving on to February, you are most likely to see humpbacks, sperm whales and orca. Expedition cruises only sail between November and March and you will need to book well in advance!

We have outlined some of the destinations you may like to consider for each month of the year below – this is not an exhaustive list of course and there is plenty of room for manouvere depending on what it is you would like to do when you get there.

spectacular tulip gardens in the worldfamous Keukenhof Gardens. Whilst the tulips are at their peak in mid-April, visiting slightly earlier will help you avoid most of the heaviest crowds. March is also a popular month to visit India and take part in the worldfamous Holi Festival – a colourful and very popular festival that both natives and tourists can get involved in. Here, you can celebrate amongst elephants and local families as Spring is welcomed all around you.

A trip to the Caribbean and South America at the turn of the year is a great way to kick off the next 12 months in style. Indeed from November-March you will enjoy warm temperatures allowing you to make the most of sightseeing and outdoor activities. Whilst the Caribbean can be very busy this time of year, you will have the benefit of LOTS of cruise lines to choose from as many of them will be positioned here for the season.

April is the perfect time to visit Japan whilst it is in full Cherry Blossom bloom. These world famous flowers line the streets as far as the eye can see – perfect for photographers who wish to capture this beautiful, natural sight. The weather too is lovely and warm without being too hot to bear, so you can fit in plenty of sightseeing in comfort.

MARCH

MAY

Springtime, otherwise known as ‘Tulip Time’ is the perfect time to visit Holland and Belgium and admire the

Europe in general really starts to heat up from May, and this is a great month to visit ahead of the mid-

12 Cruising Magazine

APRIL

Summer crowds. Whether you choose to sail the Dalmatian Coast and visit destinations such as Dubrovnik and Kotor, or decide to take a tour to France’s wine regions; pleasant temperatures and stunning scenery await. Warmer sea temperatures are also sure to tempt you to try out a spot of kayaking or snorkeling, a great way to explore your destination from a different perspective.

JUNE Visiting the Amazon in Peru during ‘Low water season’, which starts in June and lasts through to November, will enable you to get off the beaten track and into the Jungle. The trails are accessible once the water retreats, mosquitoes are at their lowest levels and you are likely to spot a larger number of birds too. If monkeys are your thing however and you wish to experience some of the Amazon’s smaller canals and tributaries, high water season will offer you these opportunities – just be sure to bring your waterproofs as December to May is wetter and cooler during this season.

JULY

Most of Europe and the Mediterranean, including the Greek Islands should enjoy great weather during July – perfect if you are in the market for beaches and water-sports. Just watch out for the end of the month when schools break up and prices creep higher.

AUGUST If you are interested in whalewatching in Alaska you are most likely to spot them in August. However, be aware that early August is still within peak season so prices are higher, ships tend to be more crowded and, whilst mild, you could experience some rainy days. The Canaries Islands offer almost guaranteed sunshine during August, with many cruise lines offering ‘island hopping’ itineraries so that you can sample more than one of this archipelago’s delights. Book your cabin early however as availability will be limited the closer you get to summer due to the Canaries’ popularity.

November/December - Australia

September - Kenya

Warm temperatures and sunny skies make the summer months the ideal time to visit Northern Europe. The Baltic ports and Norwegian Fjords are stunning at this time of the year and, whilst likely to be a bit more expensive than at other times of the year, you can’t beat an afternoon out on deck or in a port-side café sipping a cool drink as you watch the spectacular scenery go by.

If you are considering a long-haul holiday at this time of year, it’s important to note that much of Asia and South East Asia do experience monsoons during ‘our’ summer months – as it is their ‘wet’ season. Over in North America too, hurricane season will commence from June to September.

SEPTEMBER Wildlife fans won’t go far wrong than visiting Kenya during September – just in time for the Wildebeest migration. Other safari destinations to consider at this time of the year include Chobe National Park in Botswana where herds of buffalo and elephant will start to appear. Alternatively in Namibia, you are likely to spot more wildlife congregating around water holes due to dry season. Several cruise lines including Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, MSC, Celebrity Cruises and Oceania Cruises offer the chance to combine a cruise with a safari. Whilst Canada enjoys its driest, warmest weathers in the summer, in addition to offering opportunities to spot bears and beluga whales, it really does come into its own throughout the Autumn months. Beautiful colourful foliage and fresh, crisp air are synonymous with this region throughout September and October. Be sure to pack an extra jumper towards the end of this season however as temperatures start to fall.

OCTOBER – NOVEMBER This time of year benefits from much lower rates if you are thinking of heading to Europe or the Med. Temperatures won’t be at their highest of course, but you will benefit from a little extra space and the ability to wander through some of Europe’s famous sites and fascinating museums at your own leisure. Further afield you will find a wider range of cruises to choose from if you wish to sail to Australia from late November onwards. The weather is typically best right up to March – perfect for taking in Sydney’s beaches and Harbour area, as well as exploring the exciting city of Perth. You can also get some great deals by sailing to the Caribbean early November when the hurricane season will be over and the crowds yet to emerge.

DECEMBER

August- Canary Islands

Mini cruises to Germany’s Christmas Markets will offer you a fantastically festive break on the lead up to the Big Day – these may be the exception when it comes to the ability to find lower rates during Europe’s ‘low season’ – short break cruises are becoming increasingly popular so be sure to book in advance.. Looking at long haul destinations, a cruise to Australia in December means you can take in the iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks at Sydney Harbour, whilst a short hop away in New Zealand you can enjoy clear, sunny weather. Special Interest Cruises

The adage ‘there is a cruise to suit everyone’ has never been more true than in recent years with an explosion of special interest cruises entering the market. Differing tastes, interests and hobbies identified in cruisers has enabled cruise lines to come up with some fantastically themed cruises to satisfy even the most niche. From Bridge and Jazz cruises, to the more established Wine and Music cruises, we take a look at just some of the diverse range of cruises on offer throughout 2017/18…

MUSIC CRUISES

ships. You can enjoy free daily yoga and meditation on deck, underneath thousands of square feet of billowing sails - the ultimate relaxation for body and soul, enhanced by the fresh sea air. Silversea also offer a selection of Wellness Expedition voyages designed to improve your wellbeing. Taking you to some of the most remote, untouched places in the world, you can enjoy a complete onboard programme of yoga and stretching classes, spa treatments and healthy daily menus.

PHOTOGRAPHY CRUISES

Cunard’s three Queens regularly host Big Band Balls for dance and music lovers around the world. You can enjoy music from Glenn Miller, Count Basie & Duke Ellington in the opulent surroundings of the Queens Room ballroom. For Opera fans, Cunard, MSC Cruises and Regent Seven Seas are amongst some of the cruise lines tying up their Mediterranean cruises with an overnight stay in Venice or Verona, enabling you to take in the Arena di Verona Opera Festival.

Many cruise lines, particularly those that venture into some of the world’s most exotic, far-flung corners of the world, now offer special photography workshops on board. Led by professional photographers, you can learn how to take the perfect picture, whether you wish to capture wildlife on camera, photograph magnificent landscapes or take a tricky nighttime shot. Expedition cruise lines offering expert-led photography sessions include Poseidon & Oceanwide.

WELLNESS CRUISES

BIRDS & WILDLIFE CRUISES

Star Clippers will be offering several ‘Yoga, Fitness & Pilates’ cruises throughout 2017 on board their three

Most Alaska cruises are fantastic for wildlife as you can imagine, and those that include stays in Denali National

Park also offer the opportunity to see grizzly bears, Golden Eagles, Moose and more! Over in India’s Assam region too, you can enjoy a visit to Kaziranga National Park as part of a river cruise along the Brahmaputra and go in search of the magnificent Bengal Tiger. Expedition cruises to Antarctica with cruise lines such as Poseidon Expeditions will of course be geared towards wildlife watching – from sea birds to penguins and seals… your camera will never be out of your hands!

ART CRUISES Explore Art History with a variety of Smithsonian Journeys’ Art-Themed Cruises throughout 2017, including a trip to Holland and Belgium on board Amadeus Silver II. Avalon Waterways will also be promoting an ‘Art and Impressionists’ cruise in August 2017 where you can experience scenic Northern France and explore art museums on shore. On the oceans, Cunard are offering an Arts & Literary Tour cruise on board Queen Elizabeth in July, with famed actor Robert Powell as guest speaker.

SPORT & FITNESS CRUISES The idea of cruises being predominantly sedentary has all but gone out of the window in recent years, with the majority of cruise lines now offering a variety of sport and fitness options on board. From rock climbing and water-skiing to kayaking, golf and on board bicycles, each cruise line has something to offer all sporting enthusiasts whatever their interest. On board fitness centres now offer group classes in the form of popular pilates, yoga and spinning, whilst on shore, a number of cruise lines including Fred. Olsen Cruise Line offer walking or cycling excursions for you to explore the world and enjoy a little exercise at the same time. Contact your Cruising Specialist today to find out more about the range of themed cruises on offer today. Expedition

“A journey undertaken by a group of people with a particular purpose, especially that of exploration, research or war” (Oxford Dictionary). When we talk about an expedition in the context of cruising, our purpose is very much that of exploration “A journey undertaken by a group and adventure –venturing of people with a particular purpose, bolding into parts of the world that are seldom visited by others. especially that of exploration, research

cruising

or war” (Oxford Dictionary).

Highlights of your trip may include spotting whales, sea birds, seals and multiple species of penguin, sailing through the infamous Drake Passage and visiting the British overseas territory of The Falklands. Cruise lines visiting Antarctica: Poseidon, Quark Expeditions, Silversea, Oceanwide, Seabourn.

THE ARCTIC There is often a debate as to where the Arctic begins but the general belief is that anything further north than sixty six degrees is included. This encompasses the majority of Greenland, along with areas of Russia, Canada, Alaska, Norway, Sweden and Finland as well as the entire Svalbard archipelago.

When we talk about an expedition in the context of cruising, our purpose is very much that of exploration and adventure – venturing bolding into parts of the world that are seldom visited by others.

On your Arctic expedition there is a chance that you may encounter polar bears, reindeer, walruses, Arctic foxes and various species of bird, but no penguins. Penguins are found in the Antarctic and it is a common myth that they and polar bears ever encounter each other in the wild. Aside from the wildlife, there’s majestic frozen landscapes and thriving local communities to discover; making for a truly memorable trip. Cruise lines visiting the Arctic: Poseidon, Lindblad, G Adventures, Silversea, Quark Expeditions

Yet embarking on a thrilling expedition does not mean sacrificing all of your home comforts - this is 2017 after all. Many companies operating expedition cruises have worked hard to ensure that you are able to explore some of planet earth’s most awe-inspiring landscapes, indigenous cultures, and native wildlife in opulent surroundings. Those who would prefer a more ‘authentic’ expedition experience however are also well catered for, with ships such as the icebreaker ’50 Years of Victory’ and Hurtigruten’s earlier expedition ships offering adventurous cruises to the polar regions.

ANTARCTICA Antarctica is known as the frozen wilderness due to the fact that the conditions there are so extreme that 24 Cruising Magazine

the place has no permanent human inhabitants. Almost one hundred per cent of it is covered by ice that is over a metre thick on average. The only area not covered is the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. Most Antarctica expeditions are concentrated on the western part of the continent, with the majority landing on the Peninsula, but most of them take in other destinations around it too. You will be able to explore parts of South America, as well as many of the islands in the South Atlantic Ocean and other seas that can be found in this part of the world. There is also the opportunity to cross the Antarctic Circle line of latitude; something that very few members of the public will ever get to do.

IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT ICE Whilst the polar regions are certainly amongst the most popular destinations for expedition cruises, having been ‘unreachable’ for so many years, other exotic destinations also fall firmly into the expedition camp, including the Galapagos islands and the often overlooked west coast of Africa. The Galapagos Islands are a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise, with each island offering something unique in terms of species – from magnificent Frigatebirds to marine iguanas and the Galapagos Sea Lion. West Africa meanwhile is fantastic for an insight into unknown cultures, colonial history and of course wildlife. Cruise lines visiting the Galapagos/ West Africa: Celebrity Cruises, Silversea Expeditions, G Adventures.

Cruise & Stay The right way

The huge variety of ports of call available to cruisers has given rise to a fantastic amount of options to extend your holiday with a pre or post-cruise land stay. From adding on an overnight hotel before or after your cruise for that extra bit of comfort and convenience, to combining a cruise with a fullblown land tour, beach break or city stay, we take a look at just some of the itineraries that are just perfect for a land extension in order to make the most of all that is on offer…

ALASKA CRUISE & CANADA TOUR An awe-inspiring Alaskan cruise is an experience that is hard to beat. Yet to make your trip even more memorable, consider extending it with a Rocky Mountain adventure, or venturing into Denali National Park. Perfect for adventure lovers, an excursion into Denali generally involves a spectacular railroad ride, and a stay within the park itself will provide opportunities to get up close to wildlife as well as take part in some thrilling adventure activities including rafting or helicopter sightseeing. The Canadian Rockies on the other hand will take you from

Vancouver, through stunning scenery to beautiful locations including Jasper National Park, Banff and Lake Louise Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, NCL and Holland America Line are some of the cruise lines that offer fantastic Alaska cruise & stay itineraries.

INDIA RIVER CRUISE & BHUTAN A sailing down (or up) the Brahmaputra river in India’s Assam region will show you a side of India that many will have never seen. A popular region for wildlife lovers, thanks to the abundance of birds (over 850 species), fresh water dolphins, elephants, one-horned rhino and wild buffalo that can be found in this part of the world, a trip to Assam can also be combined with a land tour to India’s cities. For something really special, consider a land tour of Bhutan, also known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon. Here you can unlock the secrets of this Himalayan holyland and visit sacred temples, fortresses, local markets and more. Far Horizons of India offer a number of land extensions as part of their Brahmaputra river cruise itinerary.

EUROPEAN RIVER CRUISE & CITY BREAK Many river cruises begin and end in different port of calls, giving you plenty of choice when it comes to deciding how to extend your cruise with a city stay. Cities such as Amsterdam and Budapest have so much to offer in terms of magnificent architecture, an abundance of culture, fine cuisine and friendly locals. Docking at a river cruise port also means that from the moment you step off the ship, you are only minutes away from all of the highlights of the city, with no lengthy transfers required before you can embark on that all important sightseeing and shopping! APT Cruises offer large variety of cruises combined with land tours, alternatively why not create your own extension following a European cruise with AmaWaterways, Amadeus River Cruises, Uniworld and more. If you would like to know what land options are available to you on your chosen cruise, or if you would like a cruise and stay holiday tailored just for you - ask your Cruising Specialist today. Cruising from the UK

If you are not keen on flying, can’t bear the thought of airport queues, shuttle buses and lengthy transfers or simply can’t wait to start your chosen holiday as soon as you can, then cruising from the UK is the perfect choice. Enabling you to embark on an adventure from your doorstop, an ‘exuk’ cruise, as they say in the industry, also means that you are not restricted by airport luggage allowances so can pack all of your home comforts without fear of charges, and even bring an extra suitcase for all those souvenirs you are bound to pick up along the way. Hassle-free and great value for money, you now have so much choice when it comes to your departure point, with cruise lines such as Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines offering sailings from no less than 10 regional UK ports, including Southampton, Dover, Tilbury, Newcastle, Bristol (Avonmouth), Belfast, Glasgow and Edinburgh. We take a look at just some of the regions of the world you can visit on a cruise departing from the UK in 2017 and 2018 - from Europe to the Caribbean and beyond…

CARIBBEAN When considering a cruise around the Caribbean you could be forgiven for assuming that you need to get on a plane, however, there are plenty of opportunities to reach the stunning islands of Antigua, St. Lucia, Barbados and more by sea. Departing from Southampton on 21st March 2018, P&O Cruises’ Aurora will

take you to Portugal, the Caribbean and Azores on a 25 night cruise. Visiting Madeira, Antigua, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, Martinique, Tobago & Barbados, your itinerary also includes 16 days at sea throughout the voyage for you to make the most of Aurora’s onboard facilities. Cruise & Maritime Voyages meanwhile, offer a Caribbean cruise departing from Bristol, which also takes in Cuba and Central America, visiting ports such as St. Johns, Georgetown, Nassau, Havana and Ocho Rios on a 35 night sailing departing 28th February 2017.

FRANCE AND THE CHANNEL ISLANDS Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ smaller ships are able to reach ports that larger vessels often can’t. This means that you are able to sail right into the mouth of the River Seine on cruises such as their ‘Springtime Gardens & River Seine Experience’ voyage, departing on 26th April 2017 from Bristol (Avonmouth). This is a great opportunity to visit Rouen as part of an ocean cruise and will also take you to some of the beautiful gardens in places such as Honfleur and St. Mary’s in the Isles of Scilly. If you are looking for a mini cruise, Cunard offer a lovely little short break to Guernsey on board Queen Elizabeth, departing 28th September 2018.

MEDITERRANEAN Most ex-UK cruises to the Mediterranean will involve an initial day at sea before reaching the North West

coast of Spain. From there, you can reach Barcelona in a couple of days where you will be perfectly placed to explore some of the Mediterranean’s most popular ports. These include Civitavecchia (Rome), Monte Carlo, La Spezia, Gibraltar and more. Cunard’s luxurious Queen Elizabeth offers one such cruise, departing from Southampton on 27th May 2017 - their 14 night ‘Iberia Cruise’. Royal Caribbean’s popular Independence of the Seas® and Navigator of the Seas® offer several cruises departing from the UK and taking you to destinations including Lisbon, Malaga, Nice, Valencia and Seville. These all depart from Southampton, however similar cruises to Mediterranean ports can be taken from Liverpool for example, including Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ ‘Glitz & Glamour of the French Riviera’, departing 6th September 2017 and taking you to Lisbon, Barcelona, Nice, Monte Carlo, Cannes, Mahon & Cadiz.

NORWEGIAN FJORDS An increasingly popular cruise region (see pgs 6-7 for more), the Norwegian Fjords can be reached in just under two days via cruise ship. The breathtaking scenery found in this part of the world will have you picking your jaw up off the floor and will leave you with many memories to recount once you return. Princess Cruises’ ‘Norway & Fjords Cruise’ departing from Dover on 27th June 2017, visits popular destinations including Bergen, Geiranger and Tromso, whilst also giving you the opportunity to venture into the Arctic in Russia and the island of Spitsbergen, home to the majestic polar bear. Travelling at this time of year will mean you avoid sub-zero temperatures and will get to experience the glorious Midnight Sun. Newcastle is a great starting point for Northern Europe or Baltic cruises also. Both Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and Cruise & Maritime Voyages sail to the Fjords from Newcastle, as well as offering alternative cruises few from Tilbury, Bristol and even Dundee (CMV). Ask your Cruising Specialist for more information and inspiration on cruises departing from a port near you.

These Islands will leave you dazzled. Step aboard Horizon for 7 nights across the Greek Islands. Visiting Mykonos, where you will find picturesque settings mixed with vibrant bars, Marmaris and Patmos, as well as the mesmerising Santorini - the island born as a result of vast volcanic activity and one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history. You will truly experience an array of stunning sights along the way. From flavourful foods to vibrant bars, gorgeous architecture to scenic beaches, it’s safe to say your cruise to the Greek Islands will be packed full of colour.

ABOARD HORIZON 7 NIGHT ITINERARY • Piraeus (Athens), Greece • Mykonos, Greece • At Sea • Marmaris, Turkey • Patmos, Greece • Santorini, Greece • Piraeus (Athens), Greece

DEPARTURE DATES 2017 • May 21, 28 • June 4, 11, 18 • July 9, 16 • August 6, 13 • September 3, 10, 17, 24

HIGHLIGHTS • Visit one of Mykonos' many beaches. Into quiet beaches? Visit Psarou or Platys Gialos. Or maybe you prefer lively beaches? Paradise and Super Paradise beaches will be the ones for you. • The Turkish town of Marmaris has a lot to offer visitors, with a vast array of beaches, bars, restaurants and a busy bazaar. This is a vibrant and bustling town and if you fancy doing something more traditional, you can have a Turkish bath. • Patmos claims one of the holiest spots in Christendom: the Grotto of the Revelation. Exiled from Ephesus in 95 A.D., St. John retired to Patmos spending 18 months in a cave. There he received the visions that resulted in Revelation, the last Book of the New Testament. You can still view the saint's Grotto and climb the path to the 11th-century monastery of St. John the Theologian today.

Norway’s tastiest traditions... In keeping with our Norwegian theme, we have selected two popular Norwegian dishes for you to try at home...
