The Classic Mekong
There can be no tapestry of river life as fascinating and varied as the River Mekong. Indeed there can be no more striking a cultural contrast as that between the bustling Vietnam delta and the tranquility of Cambodia. We pass from the vibrant French colonial port of Saigon, through the vast delta so rich in human life and endeavour, to travel along the main channel into the rich countryside of Cambodia. With a full day in charming Phnom Penh we then explore remoter waterways as we progress along this incredible river.
DAY 1 SAIGON - MY THO - BEN TRE
Journey by sampans through mangroves and bamboo forests to the fruit orchards of Ben Tre, an area rich in birdlife. Arrive at a village specialising in making local products.
DAY 2 CON PHUOC
Pass through a small canal and head ashore to Con Phuoc Island where we visit local craftspeople weaving bamboo baskets the traditional way.
DAY 3 CHAU DOC - VIETNAM/ CAMBODIA BORDER
Phuoc Dien Tu, climb the steps to the top to visit the pagoda. Visit the floating fish farms of Chau Doc by sampan. Stop at a Chham Village and observe the lives of Vietnamese Muslims. Upon return to ship, navigate a web of canals before dropping anchor on the Vietnam/Cambodia border.
DAY 4 PHNOM PENH
Visit Phnom Penh, the Royal Palace Silver Pagoda and National Museum with its marvelous collection of Angkorian statuary. Visit the Killing Fields and Genocide museum to learn more about the brutal Khmer Rouge regime.
DAY 5 KAMPONG TRALACH
Sail up the winding channels of the Tonle Sap river to Kampong Tralach. Travel by ox-cart around the river-side villages, markets and temples. In the evening cocktails are round a village fire pit joined by village folk keen to show us their traditional dancing and the delightful Khmer culture.
DAY 6 OUDONG - SILK ISLAND
Travel to the ancient capital of Cambodia, Oudong, stopping to visit the Vipassana Dhura Meditation Centre. Sail to Koh Nghe Tei (Silk Island) to study the silk-making process from worms to weavers. This village is a centre of the ancient martial art of L’bokator, believed to date back to the Angkor empire.
DAY 7 ANGKOR BAN VILLAGE & WAT HANCHEY
Sunrise cruise to Angkor Ban village and visit the library which was donated by Pandaw to Angkor Ban secondary school. If you want to donate books, please bring Children’s books in English (suitable for age 8 to 15 yrs).
Sail to Wat Hanchey, an important centre of worship during the Chenla period located above the mighty Mekong River with some of the best views in Cambodia. Visit 8th century structures some destroyed by American bombings during the Vietnam War.
DAY 8 SIEM REAP
Disembark and travel by coach from Kampong Cham through stunningly lovely countryside to reach Siem Reap, adjacent to Angkor Wat.

The Mighty Brahmaputra
The mighty Brahmaputra river in Northern India originates high in the Himalayas before flowing through the scenic Assam Valley where UNESCO protected national parks and remote rural communities provide the traveller with the most wonderful and authentic expedition. We are pleased to operate this new program with safaris in search of the Greater OneHorned Indian Rhinoceros and Indian tiger. We also visit tea plantations and artisan villages, temples and War Graves.
ITINERARY
DAY 1 GUWAHATI
Transfer to ship from airport and explore this pleasant Assami city visiting the Nilachai Hill temple and Commonwealth Graves.
DAY 2 SAILING
Sail all day making headway against strong currents through the lush Assami countryside stopping in a village of market gardens.
DAY 3 TEZPUR
Exploring the town by trishaw we visit the De Parbatia temple with its richly carved portals and Cole Park with its collection of medieval carvings collected from across the region.
DAY 4 NAMERI NATIONAL PARK
After an early breakfast, the Nameri National Park awaits at the foot of the blue hills of Arunachal Pradesh. Here, float down the Jia-Bhoreli River through the park. There are excellent bird-watching opportunities here (look out for the great Hornbills) and, the chance of sighting wild elephants.
DAY 5 KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK
Jeep safari to Kaziranga, this UNESCO World Heritage is home to the world’s largest population of the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros as well as the Indian Wild Water Buffalo. It has the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers and supports large populations of Indian elephants, Indian bison, swamp deer, and capped langurs. Besides wildlife, Kaziranga National Park is also a birding paradise.
DAY 6 TEA GARDENS
Return downstream to visit a tea estate and historic plantation house on the way.
DAY 7 SUALKUCHI SILK VILLAGE
Sailing down past Guwahati moor here in the afternoon to see silk production from the cocoon, to spinning and weaving to make the typical saree worn by Assami women.
DAY 8 GUWAHATI
Disembark in the morning and transfer to airport.
