Message from the foundation
Leadership
Dear Friends:
A
student scholarship recipient said it best recently when he said that charitable gifts from our alumni and friends provide the foundation for motivated, bright and involved students to become successful. He said, “Assistance will not create accomplishment. Assistance will,
however, create the opportunity for accomplishment.” Anthony Aiudi, the fourth-year pharmacy student who spoke these words, believes that the key to success is seeking out opportunities, getting involved and maximizing one’s time here at URI. Neither Anthony nor his twin brother, Christopher, also a fourth-year pharmacy student, has taken the involvement of our donors for granted. The support they receive, they say, makes them feel even more responsible, knowing that someone out there is behind them, routing for their success. They

are both involved in a number of student organizations on campus and are taking advantage of every opportunity that comes their way, all while earning top grades and volunteering. Your gifts help us build for the future and the impact your gifts make on our students today, including Anthony and Chris, as well as on our faculty, programs and facilities, provides us with tangible evidence that charitable support makes a difference. We are fortunate to count among our alumni ranks, people like you, who make supporting their alma mater a priority, if not a regular occurrence. Nearly half of all of our donors this year have made gifts for at least 10 years, some going back as far as our automated records — at 28 years. This type of dedication and commitment to giving back is impressive. Even more important than the size of the gift itself, especially for some of our younger alumni, is the regular habit of giving. One of our goals for the year ahead is to increase the participation of our alumni in terms of philanthropic support and other forms of involvement. As a university, our success is tied directly to the strength and involvement of our alumni base, and that is especially true in fundraising.
Michael J. Smith
Increasing meaningful alumni engagement is the key to building on what is already a strong foundation of philanthropy at URI. We are encouraging graduates to make five simple steps a part
of their lives each year: give a gift, recruit students to attend URI, attend URI events, display your Rhody pride, and stay connected through the alumni association. Many of you are already doing some or all of these things, and we truly thank you. With your continued participation, and with your help in getting more of your fellow alumni involved, all things are possible. Sincerely,
Thomas J. Silvia ’83

Message from the University
President
Dear Friends:
T
he University’s missions of education, research and discovery, and outreach are realized through the support of many people. The people of Rhode Island, as taxpayers, are investing more than $77 million this year in the University of Rhode
Island. And you, our dedicated and loyal alumni and friends, have contributed much to provide scholarships and other support for our students, faculty, and programs. On behalf
of the entire University community, I want to express my gratitude for your generosity. I believe that higher education has never been more important. Current and future generations of students will be required to craft or discover the solutions to issues ranging from building economic prosperity to dealing with climate change. And they will do so in a global economy. The University of Rhode Island is here to help prepare students to lead, tackle these challenges, and produce solutions. Investments in outstanding facilities and resources, like the new $75 million College of Pharmacy building, will foster cutting-edge research and engage students in experiential learning. Graduates and students are working in rural communities here and abroad to improve the health and lives of countless people. Collaborations among our faculty are creating new knowledge, new intellectual property, and new products that can stimulate sustained economic development. But to succeed, America needs to invest more, not less, in research, technology, and higher education. Our global competitors are doing this at a rapid rate. In order to keep America strong and prosperous, we must ensure affordability and accessibility to quality higher education so that our students can compete with their global peers. We are focused on transforming the ways we teach and learn, and we are aligning resources and creating efficiencies to achieve our goals. Transformation requires private and public support and a willingness to build a culture of continuous innovation. We are aligning your philanthropic interests with our strategic mission and goals to contribute to solving the challenges of the 21st Century. We are uniquely positioned to make big things happen in the State of Rhode Island, the country, and the world. As we consider the enormous benefits to students because of your foresight and generosity, we can also imagine what will exist for generations of students to come if we continue to partner, and constantly ask ourselves how we can do more and what we can do better. Together, there is powerful potential. I join with the leadership of the URI Foundation in thanking you for believing in the University, for supporting the people and programs, and in so doing, helping to distinguish URI from its peers by providing opportunities that truly enhance the academic experience for all. Sincerely,
David M. Dooley, Ph.D. President University of Rhode Island

creating a legacy
ways to give I
n order to advance it mission and continue providing funding for students, faculty and programs, the University of Rhode Island counts on the support of its dedicated and generous alumni and friends. Your gifts help provide scholarships and fellowships for the bright and deserving, attract scholars to our classrooms and laboratories, support vital
research and contribute to the enhancement of our facilities across all three campuses. As your generosity benefits others, it can benefit you as well. Depending upon your individual situation, you may receive a charitable income tax deduction and eliminate or reduce capital gains taxes. At the same time, it is possible to secure a lifetime income through a number of gift options. In any case, through any type of gift, the URI Foundation stands ready to assist you in aligning your philanthropic goals with the needs of the University.

y gift pledges: Gift pledges represent your intent to give a gift to benefit URI over time. The gift pledge option provides you with an opportunity to make regular payments over a period of several years. y matching gifts: Thousands of U.S. companies have programs that match charitable gifts made by employees. Gifts are matched or even multiplied, depending on the policy of the individual company, for an even greater impact on the University. The URI Foundation’s website provides a search component to help you determine if your company participates. legacy, providing critical and continued support to the people and programs of your choice. An endowment is a fund that is maintained in perpetuity — only a portion of the interest earned on the endowment is used for the purposes specified by the donor. The principal value of the fund is preserved and grown over time. y bequests and other planned gifts: Planned gifts, including bequests, are gift arrangements made to provide support to URI, while offering specific tax advantages to the donor. There are a number of options available that could maximize your giving potential while creating a legacy for generations to come, including: • Charitable gift annuities • Deferred gift annuities • Charitable remainder trusts • Appreciated securities • Life insurance • Real estate and/or personal property • Retirement assets

n paper, the odds seemed stacked against her. Fatoumata Traore had only been in the United States for four years, having joined her father here from her native country of Mali, in West Africa, when she decided to enroll at URI back in 2005. She
had very limited financial resources, with an income below the poverty line, and was a new mother. But Fatoumata dreamed of going to college and working in the healthcare field since she was a young girl and she would not be deterred. Having successfully balanced a very challenging academic workload, motherhood, and work, this single mother of Ali, aged 7, will graduate this May with a nursing degree from the University of Rhode Island. “This has been my dream for so long. It has been demanding and difficult at times, but it has all been worth it. Graduating and becoming a nurse will make my family, including my son, very proud,” says Fatoumata. She has three sisters and two brothers back in West Africa. She keeps in close contact with them. Fatoumata has worked at Rhode Island Hospital on a part-time basis, in its education division, for the last six months and it’s a job she truly enjoys. She says, “It’s a really great environment to work and learn in.” She has also done various student-nurse rotations in different areas and departments. With a particular fondness for community nursing, she

The recipient of privately funded scholarships including the URI Alumni Association Scholarship and the Ella Soloveitzik ’37 Memorial Scholarship, Fatoumata is appreciative of the support that has afforded her the opportunity to attend URI. “It has definitely been tough, financially, and I am thankful for the scholarships I have received. Without the support of donors I don’t know how I would have paid for college and would probably not have had this amazing opportunity at all. People in my position could not make their dreams come true without generous people like them.” Of her overall experience at the University, Fatoumata is very positive, saying, “URI is a fabulous university. The faculty and administration are very supportive and really help you achieve your goals. It’s a wonderful place to learn and prepare for work.” “I am grateful and I hope, one day, that with my nursing degree I can make a difference for others just as these scholarships have made a difference for me,” she says.

Meet Emily Serman, Uri International Engineering student, world traveler, scholarship recipient
E
mily Serman grew up in Newark, Maryland, a little town on the Delmarva Peninsula. When she was in high school, her family hosted an exchange student from Germany.
“I wanted to be able to speak with her in her native language and so
I learned a little bit of German,” said Emily. Those few words were the beginning of her global education. Today, Emily is a fourth-year University of Rhode Island engineering student presently studying at the Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany. She attends lectures given in German and works alongside her German civil engineering classmates at the Institute for Soil Mechanics and Foundation. Next March, she will begin a five-month internship at the construction company, Züblin AG in Stuttgart, Germany speaking only German. The University’s International Engineering Program (IEP) was the deciding factor in her decision to enroll at URI. “I loved the fact that I could complete the program and study abroad without losing any time on my civil engineering major and could even add a second degree in German. What a deal,” the 21-year-old says.

Emily became a tour guide to share her enthusiasm for the University while living in the IEP House, where she plans to return after her year abroad. “It is a great experience being surrounded by people of different cultures and backgrounds 24/7,” she says. “It prepared me for sharing an apartment here with students from Iran, Germany, and Spain.” “Even though I’m a Centennial Scholar, being an out-of-state URI student is expensive. I’m extremely grateful to have received the Arthur J. Minor Memorial and Joseph G. A. Riccio Civil Engineering Scholarships. Even with that help, I still must take out more than $20,000 in student loans every year. But, I believe that a good education is important and that this program is worth the debt,” she says. “I’m making an investment in myself and the people who give these scholarships are helping me to do that. I am so appreciative of their support.” It’s true that some things come full circle. Emily’s next internship in Germany will, luckily for her, bring her within driving distance of the home of the former exchange student the Serman family once hosted in Maryland. Emily plans to spend a good deal of time with the family this spring. Emily is pictured here in a recent photo taken in front of the Berliner Dom (cathedral), in Berlin.

Anthony Wheeler named to newly funded professorship at URI’s College of Business
U
niversity of Rhode Island students learn the best practices of human resources management from Anthony Wheeler, one of the foremost authorities in the field. The associate professor helps prepare students to
eventually take seats at the corporate table and earn entry-level salaries of $54,000 and senior-level salaries above $100,000. Fortunately for URI students, Wheeler will continue imparting his inspiring, informative lessons for the foreseeable future, thanks to a professorship generously funded by URI alumnus Alan R. Spachman and his wife, Florence. The Spachman Professorship in Human Resource Management provides support to help attract and retain outstanding faculty in the College of Business Administration who specialize in human resources, labor management, workforce strategies or management.

“Professorships are a superb retention tool,” said Mark Higgins, dean of the College of Business Administration. “Without the private support made available through professorships, we could lose outstanding faculty members like Tony Wheeler to other schools. Great professors like him inspire their students to become great students who then become successful alumni.” Alan Spachman, founder and chairman of National Insurance Corporation, is a perfect example. Inspired by Professor Ted Schmidt when he was a student at URI, Alan incorporated his lessons into an extraordinary career. He earned his bachelor’s degree from URI in 1969 and his MBA in 1971. He founded the National Interstate Corporation in 1989 and currently serves as chairman of the board. Professor Wheeler completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland and earned both his masters and doctorate degrees at the University of Oklahoma. He joined URI in 2008 and has, very recently, been instrumental in helping to transform the curriculum of the College’s oneyear MBA program, which now incorporates a framework of teaching based on strategic innovation. The newly-designed, intensive program launched at the URI Feinstein Providence Campus this fall. “It’s a humbling experience to know that someone believes in URI and your work” said Wheeler, a recipient of multiple teaching and research awards. “I have the best job in the world. I’m passionate about what I do. I love teaching and I love research. I’m thrilled to work at a university dedicated to always getting better and that has allowed me to get better.” Said Higgins, “It’s our students who, in the end, benefit most from this form of support.” annual report fy 2012

Joe Graf, BS ’88, bolsters scholarship that benefited him as a student at URI
I
t was 24 years ago that Joe Graf, BS ’88, was awarded the R. Craig Caldwell Memorial Scholarship, which is bestowed upon a senior majoring in
computer science based on academic success. The honor came as a surprise. “I knew I did well in my classes and at school but I didn’t know I was at the
top of my class,” said Graf, 46, who lives in Glocester, Rhode Island. “It was nice to get the recognition of receiving that scholarship.” As a software engineer at Dassault Systemes Simulia Corp., in Providence, he is helping to ensure that future computer science majors at the top of their classes will be honored by bolstering the scholarship’s endowment. And he’s challenging others who’ve received the award to give also so the scholarship can keep pace with increasing costs. Why donate after 24 years? In Graf ’s world, 24 is a number filled with meaning. For example, 24 bits are used when speaking about computer memory and how many colors can be seen on a monitor. So Graf made a special donation, to the scholarship fund benefiting a computer science student, after 24 years and for $2,400. He and his wife, Linda Graf ’88, whom he met while both were students at URI, are also regular contributors to URI athletics and the annual fund. “I thought it was an opportune time to give back to the endowment,” said Graf, whose first gift was his $10 senior class challenge. He’s given every year since. “Once I got started I just continued doing it and as I became more successful financially, I could contribute and give more back.” Campus has changed since Graf attended classes. He’s stayed connected and has visited with the head of the Computer Science Department and toured the facilities. As a professional on the technical side of the industry, providing realistic simulation on

computer science is headed and what graduates need to learn to prepare for a field where problems arise on a daily basis and the solutions you create have an immediate impact. “It is interesting and challenging work,” he said. The Grafs enjoy returning to Kingston as often as they can and have held season tickets to men’s basketball for 20 years and football for seven. They are pictured here at a game this past fall. “I felt like I got a lot out of URI and it really helped me get where I am today,” he said. “It’s good to give back and it’s something that once you start, you should keep continuing. You make a habit of it.” annual report fy 2012
