Jon Kooley Interview on,
what is your biggest inspiration for L1? I think my biggest inspiration for L1 would have to be skating for sure. I also get a lot of inspiration from work wear clothing and random people wearing cool stuff. How big of an influence does the team have on the L1 and L1TA designs? The team has always had a massive influence on the designs. It’s been about making stuff the team wants to wear. L1 is a mash up of all of our styles and personalities, which I think is what gives it such unique look and feel. Jordan, Danny, Ben, Anton and the rest of the team have been the inspiration for each individual piece. You were one of the first pro snowboarders to start wearing street wear inspired snowboarding outerwear - how did that all come about? For me it just started from the simple fact that I wanted to wear stuff that looked like everyday clothing. I didn’t want to put a snowboard costume on. How long have you been into designing outerwear? This is my second season really designing, but I’ve been submitting design ideas for about 6 years now. I have always been into creating outerwear that looks like normal clothing. What is a typical day in the winter look like for you? I get up around 7, answer emails, coffee, and breakfast. Try to make it to
the mountain around 9, snowboard till around 1 or 2. Come home, work on some designs till my wife gets off work around 9. Then try to chill out with her for a bit before I have to do it all over again. It’s pretty nice. Do you ever get inspiration from the younger kids on the team? Of course, they’re the kids who’ll be setting the trends. How do you see snowboarding outerwear evolving in the next few years? It’s hard to say, It seems like this street inspired stuff is starting to catch on with the mainstream a bit more. I would like to see how far that could go with it. At least give people the option of outerwear that is more fashionable than color blocking. Which of your own video parts do you like the best - why? I think Love / Hate for sure. It was just an unforgettable time with some awesome people. What would you like to tell any aspiring snowboarder who wants to be a designer? I’m not sure... I would say practice, possibly intern with a designer if you can, and pay attention to what you see on the mountain. Watch the pros and people doing new and unique things with their style. That will most likely be the trend a few years down the road, and you don’t want to be the last one on it.

compromise is not an option. We are constantly striving to push the premium aspect of the brand – not only in our designs and fits, but in every fabric and material we use. For 2013-14, we present Cocona® Technology in select pieces of outerwear. These pieces feature a 3.5 layer shell fabric developed by Cocona®. Cocona® Technology has developed waterproof, breathable fabric that is not only extremely waterproof but, more importantly, extremely breathable. Many brand name fabrics currently in use in the industry boast highly waterproof fabric, but moisture from the body usually soaks the wearer from the inside out. Sweat and condensation in critical conditions make you wet and leave you feeling cold, clammy and uncomfortable. Cocona® Technology has solved this problem with Active Particles. Cocona® Patented Technology permanently incorporates natural Active Particles, featuring micro-porous structures, into fibers, fabrics, polymers and films. These active particles have been tested against industry standards and have been found to enhance the performance of fabrics by 30-50%. The benefits of Cocona® technology include: increased waterproofing, breathability, dry times, UV protection and odor management. Evaporative Cooling – Cocona® fabrics spread moisture over a vast surface area created by the Active Particles, accelerating evaporation, reducing dry times and keeping users dry and comfortable in both hot and cold environments. Odor Management – Odors are absorbed into the Active Particles and then released with normal laundering, thereby refreshing the garment. UV Protection – Active Particles absorb UV rays, shielding the wearer from the sun’s harmful effects. Natural Technology – Cocona® Technology uses activated carbon derived from recycled coconut shells and naturally occurring minerals.
What is Cocona® Technology? Patented technology that keeps Active Particles functioning in fibers, fabrics, membrane laminates and insulation. These Active Particles are permanently embedded, will not wear or wash out and are refreshed with normal laundering. How does it do that? The technology encapsulates natural Active Particles during the production process then exposes them at the surface of the material. This keeps the Active Particles active and working and is the ONLY technology in the world that can do this. What are Active Particles? We use Active Particles from the earth or from recycled coconut shells. These natural Active Particles are completely safe, add no additional weight and have billions of micro-pores that create an enormous surface area. They are also used for moisture control in household appliances and in a variety of industries including packaging, medical applications, filtration and humidity regulation.
