APPENDIX II

Cancer Prevention

HEALTHY EATING

T

he biggest protection against development of cancer is eating a lot of cruciferous greens (all types of broccoli, cabbage, Brussels’ sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, all types of mustard seeds, arugula, radish, watercress, etc.) and fruits; eating small amounts of red meat, larger amounts of white meat, especially fish; eating whole grains, dark bread, and dark pasta. For sources of protein, in addition to white meat, legumes (lentils, beans) are all good. In contrast, fried, greasy, processed, salt-cured or smoked foods, along with those made from refined sugars, should be avoided. NOTE: Frying any food turns it into a delicious poison. P.S. Phytoplankton and Macrobiotic diets are anti-cancer.

HORMONES Optimize all hormone levels, i.e. thyroid, sex hormones or growth hormone. Sex Hormones If a woman needs any sex hormone (estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone), they should be bio-identical (natural) and not synthetic, i.e. made from horse urine.

24 HOUR URINE TESTING OF ALL STEROID HORMONES (Including Estrogen Metabolites) This should be done periodically to see whether adequate methylation is taking place and if not then to recommend supplements to promote

methylation. Also, urine testing can show whether estrogen metabolites, quinones, are forming—quinones are toxic and promote cancer such as breast cancer.

METHYLATION FACTORS Most B vitamins such as pyridoxine, folate, and vitamin B12 as well as S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe) will help effect safe urinary elimination of estrogen metabolites.

GENETIC TESTING If a female client or patient has a history of breast cancer in her family (such as in her mother, sister, cousin, etc.) then it is wise to do the testing for the two genes responsible for this familial transmission. They are called Breast Cancer Gene I (BRCA-I) and Breast Cancer Gene II (BRCA-II). This is to determine if the client being evaluated has one of these genes.

OBESITY There is statistical association between obesity and an increased risk for cancer. The answer is to focus on the specifics discussed in this book

ELIMINATION OF TOXINS INCLUDING HEAVY METALS Toxins of all types are in the food, air, soil, and water. It is impossible to completely block their entrance into the body— it is more important to focus on removing toxins from the body. Elimination of toxins through the intestinal tract requires insoluble fiber from food (vegetables, fruits, whole grain, fiber supplement, etc.). Chelation at the blood level requires soluble fiber and vitamin C, among other components. Removal of toxins through the skin requires perspiration, which results from exercise.

Cancer Preventon Presence of toxins in the body causes inflammation and it is inflammation that becomes a cancer risk. Some toxins have also been implicated in interfering with hormone production, and are collectively called “endocrine disrupters.” They also interfere with neurotransmitter production in the brain. Chelation is the process of removing toxins from the body and there are several products and several protocols of how to do it. Chelation can be done orally, rectally, or intravenously. Please see Appendix III on nutraceutical companies.

ALCOHOL Alcohol causes damage in two ways. One is actual damage to susceptible organs (liver, stomach, heart muscle, and brain). The other is general promotion of aging.

CIGARETTE SMOKING Cigarettes contain carcinogenic chemicals.

RADIATION From the sun, excessive exposure (especially for light-skinned people) causes a high risk for skin cancers. Frequent exposure to dental X-rays, CAT scan, mammograms, etc. does increase the risk for cancer. Frequent dental x-rays may cause thyroid cancer.

STRESS Everyone feels it—the objective is to learn to reduce and control it in practical ways.

“Antioxidant” means that the item is also automatically antiinflammatory and anti-cancer. Anything that is “anti-inflammatory” is not necessarily an antioxidant, but it is also anti-cancer. • Fish oil (Omega 3)—anti-inflammatory • VD3 • VC—antioxidant • VE—antioxidant • VK2 • Resveratrol • Curcumin (turmeric)—anti-inflammatory • Metizym®—anti-inflammatory • Quercetin—anti-inflammatory • Probiotics • Green tea—antioxidant • Ginger • Garlic • Onion • Nettle leaf • Iodine—a deficiency in women causes hypothyroidism and a higher degree of fibrocystic disease in the breast and a slightly higher breast cancer risk. A minor iodine deficiency can be corrected by taking kelp supplements, but a significant deficiency will need special iodine pills by prescription (Iodoral®).
