Eighty-five years ago, The Society of the art world luminaries. Exhibitions ranged from small watercolor exhibitions and local art shows to artistic treasures that today grace the walls of museums. In The Four Arts’ early days, relationships with leading collectors were developed, which resulted in loans of priceless masterpieces. Michel Witmer, Chairman of the Fine Arts Committee at The Society of the Four Arts, discusses the paintings from 85 years of exhibitions, the state of The Society’s current art collection, and possible future directions.

Lourdes Lopez became Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet in 2012, bringing with her a nearly 40-year career in dance, television, teaching, and arts management. Born in Havana, Cuba in 1958 and raised in Miami, Lopez began taking ballet lessons at the age of five. Under her direction, Miami City Ballet has become one of the country’s premier ballet companies.

The illustrated presentation will compare the characters and settings in Disney Pixar Studio’s film UP! with real life characters and their adventures in southeastern Venezuela where Angel Falls is located. Karen Angel is the niece of “Jimmie” Crawford Angel (1899-1956), a legendary American aviator-explorer for whom Angel Falls, the world’s tallest waterfall, is named. NEW PROGRAM!

Author Nicholas Griffin spent five years researching Miami’s history to write The Year of Dangerous Days. Featuring an iconic cast of political figures including Jimmy Carter, Fidel Castro, and Janet Reno, we watch as the city erupts into one of the worst race riots in U.S. history, as over 125,000 Cuban refugees land on the Miami coast in the Mariel boatlift and imprint the city’s identity forever, as murder rates skyrocket, and as drug cartels infiltrate all levels of law enforcement and government. Nicholas Griffin is a journalist and author of four novels and three works of nonfiction. He lives in Miami.

From the beginning, those opposed to women’s suffrage pointed to mothers as the reason why women should never vote. But deploying the art of motherhood proved one of the most powerful weapons in the suffragist arsenal. Author and art historian Bridget Quinn will describe an astonishing, artful struggle where, from Sacajawea to the paintings of Mary Cassatt to the final vote for ratification of the 19th Amendment, motherhood itself helped win the vote for women.
