THE MOORS

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

The 1850s-ish English moors, as depicted in our play by Jen Silverman, are a savage, desolate hellscape that will gobble you up if you aren’t careful. The women in our play are holed up in an aging manor—seemingly with only one room—in the middle of nowhere, with only delusion, crocheting, and atemporal journaling to keep them busy. Oh, there’s also a fervently religious, neglected dog who falls in love with an ignorantly atheist, injured hen. Our characters are depressed, frustrated, angry, hurt, bored, and alone. But don’t worry! It’s a comedy! Some situations are so miserable you can’t help but laugh at them.

The Moors, however, has a nagging darkness. After spending considerable time working on this play, it feels so plaintive to me now that I’m surprised when I hear laughter coming from the audience. The Mastiff (played by Lauren Lockhart) tries to describe to the Moorhen what’s its like being inside his head. The end of the monologue lands heavily on me.

“They think I’m guarded. But actually, if anybody truly asked me anything, I would tell them! I don’t want to be alone with my thoughts! It’s like being in a dark room all the time and you don’t have any hands and nobody thinks to open the door for you!”

Admittedly, I tend toward gloom and doom (my family and friends will snicker at this confession). And November can be a rough month—this one in particular. There’s Seasonal Affective Disorder, turning the clocks back, it getting darker earlier, Halloween being over, the Fair being over, Thanksgiving being practically in December this year, and the I’ve spent a considerable amount of time in a dark room working on a dark play. Yet, I still laugh. Laughter, after all, can be a soothing salve, even in the darkest times. Laughter heals by opening the door to hope—the door the handless Mastiff has no one to open for him.

Last night, at our final dress rehearsal, I was cackling. So how is it that, despite not feeling particularly hopeful at the moment, I can still laugh? It’s because I’m not laughing at the play. I’m laughing with my students. They open my door to hope. Their hard work, intelligence, passion, dedication, and humor heal me. When I watch them perform, not even the worst November could extinguish my hope.
