Editor’s Letter & Contents
In the doldrums This is turning out to be a year where it would seem we all have to pick ourselves up and try to think positively about the future. The horse market last year took a huge nose dive with prices falling, cost of hay escalating and oil prices increasing, making it unaffordable to travel with horses from show to show. The beginning of this year seems to have thrown the weather at us to add to these woes. Spring is just around the corner, let’s put some sunshine back in our lives, look out for the new grass, breed selectively from our animals and plan our events carefully. Drivetime is looking forward to meeting up with our friends, old and new, at the National Carriage Driving Fair at Ardingly in Sussex on 13th March and also taking part in the London Harness Horse Parade on Easter Monday. Come along and say “hello” and don’t forget to send us any photos you have for our Snapshot section of our summer issue.

Wilf Bowman Ripley
Modern life demands a man to be strong and successful... meet Wilf Bowman-Ripley
A Modern Man B
Words Linda Warburton
owman is a name these days that is synonymous with Carriage Driving, with his Uncle, George Bowman, being probably the most experienced driver in the World. Blessed with driving in the family blood, Wilf Bowman-Ripley possibly had one of the best educations possible for a would be Carriage Driver. At the tender age of 42 years, Wilf Bowman-Ripley has followed in the family footsteps to become one of the stalwarts of the Carriage Driving community. Wilf is based at Ashfields in Essex, where he lives with his partner Zoe Napier. Zoe herself is an accomplished driver and is very supportive of Wilf, allowing him plenty of time to not only compete but pass on his experience to up and coming young drivers. Wilf Bowman-Ripley was brought up in Cumbria and

spent most of his spare time at his Uncle’s stables where along with George Bowman’s sons, Barnaby and Young George and Robert Bowman, another Uncle, he would while away his time with the horses, learning the intricacies of harness work, how to handle and ride and drive the horses and about the various carriages, learning directly from the Master and even grooming for George. “Those times” recalls Wilf “were the biggest influence on my life; being taken by the family to the Driving Shows as a youngster, experiencing the thrill and excitement I felt at these shows compelled me to go on to compete for myself.”
Speaking with Barnaby he remembers their early years with a fondness “where we grew up in Cumbria” says Barnaby “it was a time when all traders also had a field where they would keep their horses. Wilf grew up in the local estate where all the other lads owned BMX bikes, I had to make do with an old bike made up from parts we got from the local scrap yard, Wilf however, just had to outdo us all, while we were running up and down the back alleys playing cowboys and Indians on our bikes, Wilf would use his horse. No shortage of friends there as everyone wanted to be on his side”. Able to ride before he could drive, Wilf’s first Ride and Drive Pony was a coloured cob called ‘Minstrel’. After honing his skills with Minstrel, Wilf entered his first competition at a club event at

Spring 2011 Barry Ward’s place in Aspatria, Cumbria driving a pair. Barry is a long time friend of the family, a larger than life character and true horseman. It was with Barry that Wilf won his first ever competition. As an accomplished driver, I asked Wilf what was his preference to drive, a team or pair? “I like to drive both pairs and teams” said Wilf “I find teams are a lot more challenging. Trying to get four horses to work together is not so easy. We started with our current team when they were 3-year-olds training and did some light competition work with them as 4-year-olds. Now they have reached seven – eight years of age they are coming into their prime, working well as a team.” Wilf prefers to drive his Dutch Horses but as long as a horse shows the right potential to drive, he would consider driving or working with any breed. Wilf’s driving life has spanned 27 years during which time he has worked with some of the great names in the sport. Lucky in name to be born a Bowman, the ‘old boys’ are great to listen to and their stories of the
Wilf Bowman Ripley 05 earlier days of Carriage Driving are always entertaining. Some recall the days of tradesmen using their floats and carts, the horses they used, trips abroad to compete in Europe, listening to the Schoolmasters of the trade is always a good education, but as Wilf says “we do tend to hear the same stories a few times, but they are always great to hear”. These days the camaraderie with the drivers is still something special to Carriage Driving. “As a small sport, during the competing year” says Wilf, “you follow the same people around from show to show, both in the UK and abroad, so everyone knows each other, celebrations are always on the cards but I am not sure about celebrating someone else’s victory!!” Wilf can list amongst his many achievements being twice National Champion in Horse Pairs and National Four-in-hands. He was also a member of the Great Britain gold medal winning team in the 1997 World Pair Driving Championships in Germany. Last year saw Wilf and Zoe as main sponsors of the BHDTA Alternative Awards.
I find teams are a lot more challenging. Trying to get four horses to work together is not so easy. In Wilf’s opinion, although in the early nineties there appeared to be a lot more spectators for the sport, he does not feel that the popularity of Carriage driving is diminishing. As he says “the sport has moved on and the quality has improved. If we want to do well at International events, we need to be able to keep up with the European drivers. A lot of drivers are coming up through the clubs now and where it was once a spectator sport, these days people are starting to participate, they may start with one day event training days and once this has been mastered move up through the club levels to regional and national levels.” Ashfields in Essex was purchased in 2003 by Terry Chambers. Terry’s aim was to create an establishment that would cater for Carriage Driving along with an equestrian centre and Polo Club. Wilf joined Terry as a professional trainer and horseman and has helped to build up Ashfields as one of the largest establishments for anything and everything to do with Carriage Driving. He and his partner Zoe also run WBR Carriages based at Ashfields. Driving is very much the predominant sport to be held at Ashfields and can boast first class training facilities, including eight international standard obstacles, flat, well maintained dressage arenas and a cones

course. The aim at Ashfields
is to run some fantastic national events and also incorporate a grand country fair. Also provided at Ashfields are training facilities for para drivers, last year saw the UK team taking Bronze at the FEI World Para-Equestrian Driving Singles Championships in Breda, Germany. Terry Chambers gave permission for the team to hold their final training session at Ashfields supported strongly by both Wilf and his partner Zoe. Wilf helps to train juniors both here and abroad and says “GB has a large number of juniors coming through, but one of the biggest problems facing us, is to keep good events going and to encourage sponsorship into the sport. Last year we lost one of the major events in the South at Brighton and can ill afford to lose many more events.”
Wilf is very keen to promote the sport and to work with organizations, particularly helping disadvantaged children and adults to become more involved with driving. Carriage Driving is a sure fire way to engage with the animals in a positive way, bringing about enjoyment and a sense of
companionship with the driven horse in a safe and structured environment. DT

t is with sadness that we report the passing of Mr Michael D Flynn M.V.O. on 2nd January following a two year battle with Cancer. Micky was perhaps better known as Coachman for The Duke of Edinburgh. Born in 1937 in Islington, North London it was during the war years that Micky worked for his father with his horses and later went on to serve an apprenticeship as a slaughterman. At the age of 24 he married his long term sweetheart Marina and remained in London working for his brother Frank, driving a pair of Greys for Rothmans of Pall Mall and competing in light trade classes. He then joined Young’s Brewery and worked with the famous Black shire Horse team out of Wandsworth, eventually taking over as the show team’s Coachman, taking the team to shows and parades up and down the country. It was at the Queens Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977 that Micky realised his ambition to drive the eight in hand team for Young’s at Smiths Lawn. His career also took him to the Courage Shire Horse Centre in Berkshire where he was a familiar character giving demonstrations to the many visitors with the Shires. During his career in the eighties Micky worked with Alan Bristow eventually representing Team GB with Alan’s Lipizzaners at the World four-in-hand Driving Championships in Hungary alongside Prince Philip and George Bowman. It was here the Hungarians nicknamed him the “Flying Flynn” after finishing third in the marathon, helping to secure
Micky exercising the Duke of Edinburgh’s team of ponies
Bronze for Team GB. In the eighties Micky and Marina disappeared to America eventually putting together a team of horses for the late Mr Coson. Micky went on to compete in the North East USA, at the same time helping a local Amish community to put together a team of four Saddle bred horses. Upon his return to England in 1993, Micky was contacted by HRH Prince Phillip with an offer to produce and drive his Fell Pony Team, initially for one season, this became his long term career. During his time with HRH, Micky trained many friends and guests of the Royal Family. He travelled with the team to all the major driving events; a handy man to have around often being asked to repair harnesses and give general advice to other competitors and never accepting a penny for his efforts, although he could be tempted to accept a liquid payment. In 2009 Micky was awarded the Member of the Royal Victorian Order, presented to him by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace, a proud moment for Micky and his family. Micky was an extremely gifted Coachman and his skills new no bounds, an expert horseman, harness maker, coach painter and whip maker. He never failed to give his advice when called upon. A true Coachman and dedicated employee, Micky was often heard to remark that Prince Philip was the best boss he had worked for. A member of the Coaching Club Micky will be sadly missed by all who knew him and a great loss to those that had never had that opportunity. DT

The Story of the Kerry Bog Pony by Mary McGrath and Gay Keogh. Published by Associated Editions
For anyone who has visited the South West corner of Ireland and visited John Mulvihill’s Kerry Bog Village, you cannot fail to fall in love with the Kerry Bog Pony. John has worked tirelessly to rescue this breed from the brink of extinction. Mary and Gay have documented in a beautiful book the history of the breed, its uses in society, its demise and its resurgence today. Illustrations take you back to times gone by, to a simple existence, sometimes forgotten but always in our blood. From a decimated population of just 20 ponies some 20 years ago, with the sterling support of John and the Kerry Bog Pony Cooperative Society there are now officially approved and registered 279 Kerry Bog Ponies breeding mares and 39 stallions and offspring. An excellent read to learn about the Kerry traditions and a brave little pony. www.associatededitions.ie ISBN 978-1-906429-12-6

Stuart Russell Harness
Working for a world where the working horse is used but never abused
Stuart Russell Harness in developing countries with World Horse Welfare
A
fter serving 22 years in The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, finishing as the Master Saddler in 2007, Stuart started in business for himself. As well as work at home, he has also been involved with training people in developing countries for World Horse Welfare. Or formerly known as The International league for the Protection of Horses (ILPH). The countries he has worked in include Mexico, Romania, The Gambia, Lesotho, Guatemala, Senegal and Honduras. In these countries the working horse is vital to the everyday existence for millions of people. Whether it’s driving harness, riding saddles or pack saddles, the training teams will tackle whatever is most needed in that particular
region. With his personal interest in driving, Stuart often finds himself in locations where harness is the biggest problem. Firstly, a location is chosen where working horses are in need of help. They approach the local authorities and see if it’s possible to work where the problems are. The next step is to source an in country coordinator, who will be the ears and eyes on the ground. He will assist in the logistics of the course and help choose suitable candidates as students. Once the course is ready to start, Stuart needs to look at the typical problems that are faced by horses and owners alike. As well as the harness, obviously the vehicles need to be looked at too. Often the carts are far too heavy for the horses and in all too many
cases, over loaded. He also needs to source suitable, affordable and locally found materials. A variety of natural and synthetic materials are used in appropriate ways with many considerations to take into account. Such as – the weather conditions, cost of materials, time to manufacture and suitability for purpose. The training teams train 10 Saddlers and 10 Farriers in each country per year. As well as these two options, the students will also learn about good horse husbandry and nutrition. The training covers a nine week period split into four modules. Even though this is a relatively short time the students make great progress and will be able to make a set of harness by the end of week five. This is due to the simple but effective design, which is both strong and durable. The overriding objective of the training is to enable people to continue work after the trainers have moved on to another location. The charity could easily ‘airdrop’ sets of harness in with sets of instructions, but they would rather train people to stand on their own and consider the benefits of better horse care. Stuart often sees great pride taken by students in their work and it’s these people who will make a difference to the working horses in developing countries in the future. To focus on the work

Stuart needs to look at the typical problems that are faced by horses and owners alike
currently going on in Senegal, Stuart is currently the Saddlery instructor on the course which is located on the outskirts of the capital Dakar, in a town called Rufisque. In this region Malaria is a constant threat to everyone. Seeing people clearly showing signs of the disease is not uncommon. Living conditions are very poor with only basic levels of sanitation. With high levels of traffic pollution, severe extremities of weather in the dry and wet seasons, life is really hand to mouth for many of the inhabitants of this suburb of Dakar. ‘We are halfway through year two here in Senegal now’ says Stuart. ‘We chose this location as we are right in the heart of a large population of working horses. The two main forms of horse use here are for taxis and carts, used for delivering or transporting goods. The general condition of the horses can vary from a very well kept and fed working horse, to cases in poor condition with a variety of severe injuries’. Unfortunately these are in the majority.
‘The message is a simple one directed to the horse owners who rely on their horse to support them and their families. We ask them why not take better care of your horse and it could last for over 15 years? Where as one which is used at too young an age, overworked, under fed, dehydrated and asked to carry on regardless of injury or lameness might not even see its 5th birthday’.
In countries where the horse is not held in such high regard as we hold it in the UK, at least the owners can see the benefit of protecting their investment. ‘But never think that every case is going to be a bad one.

After seeing some of the
most horrendous cases of horse misuse, Stuart often sees someone looking after his horse to standards as good as we see at home. Those people who do care for their horses, are vital to include on the courses and we encourage them to spread the word of the benefits of better horse care. It is also so important to have in country assistants as soon as possible wherever we work. To let them lead with the training, educating their fellow countrymen is a great milestone. The message gets put across a lot better when it’s given directly. This is when we feel that the foundations of change are firmly in place. DT

Chester Weber
Living the American Dream
Drivetime
Words and images supplied by Lucinda Stapleton of Horse Quencher UK
C
ombined Driver Chester Weber, whose name has become synonymous with Four-in-Hand driving throughout the world, achieved what no other driver has even done before when in March 2010 he won the United States Equestrian Federation’s National Four-In-Hand Championship for a record eighth year in a row. Well known for being a driver who sets goals and achieves them, following his eighth win Weber turned his attention to the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Held in Lexington, Kentucky, the 2010 Games marked the third time that Weber proudly represented the United States at this prestigious event. Weber showed himself to be world-class when he brilliantly won the cones phase of the Combined Driving event with a lightning fast time of 200.42 to help the US team clinch the Silver Medal. A phenomenal 2010 comes
on the heels of a stellar 2009 in which Team Weber dominated the Four-In-Hand division by winning all events entered. Weber won the prestigious CAI-A Live Oak International, a world class qualifying competition that draws top competitors to Ocala each year and is considered to be one of the premier Combined Driving events in North America. Team
Weber also won the FEI division for Four-In-Hand horses at the Sunshine State FEI Combined Driving Event in Ocala and the dressage phase at the Laurels At Landhope International Combined Driving Event in Pennsylvania. Weber’s successful 2008 summer campaign in Europe saw Weber breaking records again when he won an Individual Silver Medal in the Four-in-Hand

World Driving Championships in Beesd, The Netherlands – making him the first American to ever win an Individual Medal at the World Driving Championships. Weber was also named a 2008 USEF Equestrian of Honour and his horse, Jamaica, took home top honours as the 2008 Farnam Platform/USEF Horse of the Year. Weber took his role as a 2008 Equestrian of Honour seriously by not only actively promoting the sport of combined driving, but also by wholeheartedly supporting the USEF throughout the year by serving on the Board of Directors, and various other committees. Weber raised the bar to a new standard as an ambassador for the USEF. With Jamaica, who was rescued from a slaughter house before going on to become part of Weber’s international team, Chester and Jamaica made public appearances, promoted rescue organisations and horse adoption and took part
Chester Weber 25 in a variety of charities. While Jamaica’s story captivated the nation, the story didn’t end with his win of the HOTY title. Weber and Jamaica followed a “pay it forward” mentality and donated all of Jamaica’s winning feed from Farnam to two different horse rescues. Weber’s success in combined driving started early. At 18 years old, he was the youngest driver to be named to the United States Equestrian Team (USET) and to qualify for the World Pairs Driving Championship. By 1999, Weber had won 12 consecutive Advanced combined driving events and then transitioned to Four-in-Hand driving, where he made a name for himself internationally. At the 2002 FEI World Equestrian Games, Weber helped the US Driving Team earn a Silver Medal and placed fifth individually in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. The next year he claimed his first, of now eight, consecutive USEF Four-InHand National Championship titles. In July 2004, Weber became the first American to win the prestigious German Fahrderby held at CAI-A Riesenbeck, an achievement he handily repeated in 2008. In 2005, Weber decided not to compete overseas. In the United States, he recorded several wins including his third consecutive national title. He won each of the competitions he entered, which included three CAI and two CDE competitions. Weber was selected to represent the United States at the FEI World Equestrian Games in 2006 where his team took eighth place.
United States Equestrian Federation’s National Four-In-Hand Championship for a record eighth year in a row Again in 2007, Weber made the choice to stay in the United States where he proceeded to win every competition he entered that year; including another national combined driving championship. As an athlete, Chester brings a rare combination of talent, commitment, sportsmanship and showmanship to Four-In-Hand Combined Driving. A truly driven Combined Driver who continues to leave an amazing mark on the Combined Driving world, Weber now has his sights set on competing in the 2012 World Championships in Riesenbeck, Germany – another step in the journey of this remarkable horseman’s legendary career. Horse Quencher – the driving force behind Chester Weber Weber began using Horse Quencher last winter and is equally pleased to have them join his team of sponsors, thanks to his belief in the product. “I have never seen a horse so happy to drink regardless of the weather or the environment,” Weber said. “Horse Quencher keeps my team drinking on long trips and at horse shows where the water has a distinctive taste. One of the most important things relative to my horses’ health when we’re travelling around the world is that they continue to drink. We travel often 18 or 19 hours at a time and it’s very important that my horses drink because there is a direct correlation to their health and well-being. Horse Quencher has been a huge help. We wouldn’t leave home without it.” Lucinda Stapleton of Horse Quencher UK, says: “We are delighted to sponsor Chester Weber, whose name has become synonymous with Four-in-Hand driving throughout the world. Drinking is a big part of
keeping horses healthy on the road and being able to give their best performance. We are pleased to be able to give Chester peace of mind in this respect, to know that his horses are always healthy and hydrated.” New Horse Quencher looks like muesli and when you put it into a bucket and fill it with water, horses drink up immediately. Its all-natural ingredients are permitted under FEI regulations and its low sugar formula makes it suitable for horses with insulin resistance. It is not an electrolyte. The product is available in four flavours (apple, mint, butterscotch and root beer) and has a two-year shelf life. Singleserving sachets cost just £3 and a tub measure £1 making Horse Quencher inexpensive ‘health insurance’ to have on hand so you are ready when you need to get your horse to drink. Boathouse Bilbo spends the day with The Horseboating Society For over 200 years, from around 1740, horsedrawn boats were one of the main forms of transporting goods. However, the convenience of motorpowered boats has meant that a horsedrawn boat is a rare sight on most of our canals today. The Horseboating Society exists to promote horseboating and to preserve the heritage and skills of this once common form of transport. This
year it celebrates it’s tenth anniversary having been formed on 19th January 2001. Many events have been planned for this year including on Saturday April 23th ‘St.George’s Day and the Dragon’ event when a dragon boat will emerge from the Standedge Tunnel, Huddersfield. This is the oldest and deepest canal tunnel in Britain, and it will have to be seen if St George and his horse can save the trembling locals. There is no right to use horses on the inland waterways, but the Horse Boating Society is able to offer this opportunity through its campaigning work and representation with British Waterways. If you would like to receive training, or be part of the crew visit the website for further details: www. horseboating.org.uk In July and August 2010 The Horseboating Society travelled the length of the Rochdale Canal. Boathorse Bilbo towed the historic narrowboat Elland.
