Clayton Klein died on Sunday, Feb. 22, at age 95 A man who never quit... and accomplished his dreams
By Steve Horton “I never heard him say ‘I quit’,” said Darrell Klein. “If you can dream it, you can do it was how he approached his life, and he pretty much accomplished his dreams,” added Deb Klein. The comments were made about their father, Clayton Klein, who died on Feb 22 at age 95 (two days short of his 96th birthday) at St. Joseph Hospital in Howell. The Fowlerville resident, who lived most of his life in the Conway Township home where he was born, founded three successful businesses, including Klein Fertilizer Company. He was also an author and lecturer, canoed numerous times in the upper reaches of Canada, and walked over 68,000 miles, including five trips down the length of Michigan when in his late 80’s. In his younger years, he also flew his small plane all around the United States and into Canada, Mexico, and Central America on both business and pleasure trips. Foremost, though, he was a family man as well as a good friend.

HAPPY MARCH
Spring IS coming right? Did you know that by 2050, one in five Americans will be an immigrant, and 30 percent of the population is projected to be Hispanic? The United States is aging, too: By 2050, one in five Americans will be over the age of 65. These demographic changes are fundamental shifts in the economy that change how Americans will learn and earn a living. In its 2009 report, the Knight Commission on the Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy described the digital era as a moment of technological opportunity “unleashing innovation in the creation and distribution of information” and requiring “new thinking and aggressive action.” The Commission went on to say, “Every advance in communications technology expands the possibilities for American democracy, but every information system also creates potential winners and losers.” The digital era has produced remarkable changes in everyday life-for the individual as well as for the community. Social media connect people across town and around the world, enabling new kinds of communities that transcend geographic barriers. Mobile technologies provide always-on

connectivity to people and information. Technology has made it possible for individuals to have instant access in their homes or on portable devices to the equivalent of the Library of Congress’s entire holdings! Employment is increasingly transient, with the average worker staying in a job 4.4 years rather than an entire career. Among workers born between 1979 and 1999, average tenure is 2.2 years or less. Keeping up with a more mobile job market requires access to information and resources and skills to navigate vast amounts of information. To put it simply, PEOPLE and COMMUNITIES NEED PUBLIC LIBRARIES! America’s public libraries have changed with the times with remarkable skill and agility over their long history. The nation’s nearly 9,000 public library systems remain highly trusted community anchors where resources are universally available and everyone is WELCOME. Libraries are stable, reliable, nimble and always there! Check out your local library – we are changing and we are always here for our community and library patrons. Till next week: “Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself.” Be Creative.

March is Reading Month
March 2015 marks the beginning of “March is Reading Month” in Michigan. Reading is vital to an effective education and lays the foundation for a rewarding and successful future. Teaching children to read at a young age is key to future success in both their school and career. My parents read to me often while growing up, and it is a tradition that I value and am passing along to my family. I encourage parents to join in the effort to help our children succeed through reading. Parents can check with their children’s school and local libraries about activities and programs, or ask about ways they can take part in reading activities along with their kids. If you are unable to participate this March, please keep an eye out for next year’s efforts and please be aware of resources our friends at the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) have made available, including suggested reading materials. By considering skill levels and developmental range, as well as the needs and interests of students, educators can select books that appeal to the broad spectrum. Acquiring a core of books, magazines and reference materials is the first step in engaging students and mastering Michigan’s learning requirements. The MDE resource page can be found at: www.michigan. gov/mde. Also, don’t hesitate to visit the Fowlerville Library for a wealth of materials and information. The knowledgeable and courteous staff will be on hand to assist you in any way possible. If you have any further questions, please email my office at SenJHune@senate.michigan.gov or dial toll-free 1-855-5634863 and my staff will be happy to assist you.

There have been changes the last couple of years to the State of Michigan School Code regarding enrollment of children in kindergarten and their age eligibility. Here is an excerpt from the revised school code 380.1147: (2) In a school district that provides kindergarten, beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, a child who resides in the school district may enroll in kindergarten if (3) If a child residing in the school district is not 5 years of age on the enrollment eligibility date specified in subsection (2), but will be 5 years of age not later than December 1 of a school year, the parent or legal guardian of that child may enroll the child in kindergarten for that school year if the parent or legal guardian notifies the school district in writing not later than June 1 before the beginning of the school year that he or she intends to enroll the child in kindergarten. A school district that receives this written notification may make a recommendation to the parent or legal guardian of a child described in this subsection that the child is not ready to enroll in kindergarten due to the child’s age or other factors. ride seemed to drain the girls. They came out a little flat and were outhustled to 16-8 and 22-14 deficits at half and the third quarter. They woke up in the 4th, but it was not enough in a 29-23 loss. Ella Floto had 10 points, Lindsey Darby 6, Alyssa McGalliard 5, and Gretchen Wylie 2 for the Glads. The B team is now 4-2 on the year. The A team had troubles of their own, even though they led 22-16 at half. The second half was also a little sluggish, but the girls pulled out a 44-32 victory. Elie Smith led the Glads with 19 points followed by Jackie Jarvis with 11, Meghan Douglass 8 Dalaija Franklin 4, and Chelsea O’Donnell 2. The A team is now 6-0 on the year. Next, the girls won a pair of games against Okemos. The B team took control of the game in the second quarter and despite a late Chieftain rally won 27-23. Lindsey Darby led the way with 10 points, while Alyssa McGalliard added 8, Ella Floto 7, and Alexia Rodriquez 2 to round out the scoring. The B team is now 5-2 on the season. The A squad had a close game in the first half, but came out strong in the second, eventually winning 63-53. Elie Smith scored 22, Meghan Douglass 16, Jackie Jarvis 14, Natalie Juopperi 7, and Sophia Spalding and Dalaija Franklin 2 in the win. The A team is now 7-0 on the year. The Glads then faced some tough competition in the way of Dewitt. The B team got down early, which continued through the first half and most of the game. This led to a 61-18 loss. Alyssa McGalliard had 9 points, Ella Floto 6, Lindsay Darby 2, and Kaitlyn Roberts 1 for the game. The B team is now 5-3 on the year. The A game saw much of the same as Dewitt came out and dominated early. The Glads never recovered in a 56-24 loss. Elie Smith had 11 points, Meghan Douglass 5, and Jackie Jarvis, Chelsea O’Donnel, Dalaija Franklin, and Sophia Spalding all added 2 points each. The A team is now 7-1 on the season. Although the Glads continued to play hard throughout the entire game, Eaton Rapids pulled away for a 38-22 victory. Lindsey Darby scored 7 points, the trio of Alyssa McGalliard, Ella Floto, and Alexia Rodriquez 4, and Kaitlyn Roberts 3 in the loss. The B team is now 5-4 on the year. The A team pulled away from a 5 point half time with a strong second half for a 42-22 victory. Elie Smith led the team with 17 points. Jackie Jarvis had 12, Meghan Douglass 10, Dalaija Franklin 2, and Sophie Spalding 1 to round out the scoring. The A team is now 8-1 on the season. Fowlerville then hosted Williamston for the second time in the year, but with much of the same result. In the B game, the girls came out and played strong defense as well as hitting the boards hard. This led to several offensive opportunities on the way to a 18-4 halftime lead. This continued in the second half as the Glads pulled out the 28-14 win. Ella Floto led the way with 16 points, Lindsey Darby added 10, and Alexia Rodriguez 2 in the win. The A team also pulled out a win, but did not play up to their usual caliber. Meghan Douglass had 19 points, Dalaija Franklin 7, Jackie Jarvis 4, and Sophie
Spalding 2 in the win. Despite the cold weather, the 8th grade girls’ basketball team kept busy over the last long weekend at the Our Savior Lutheran tournament. After a Friday night forfeit by Island City, the Glads took on the host OSL. With balanced scoring (8 players scored) and solid defense, the girls came away with a 35-16 win. In the championship game on Saturday, Fowlerville came out strong offensively and defensively for a big halftime lead. This continued in the second half for a championship win over Michigan Lutheran. All the girls played hard and contributed to bringing home the trophy. The wins leave the A team at 11-1 and the B, 8-4. The 8th grade girls’ basketball team wrapped up its home play with victories over Haslett. The B team grinded out a back and forth battle until the fourth quarter, where they pulled away and won 38-30. Kaitlyn Killen had her best game, scoring 8 points, while Lindsey Darby had 12, Alyssa McGalliard 10, and Ella Floto 8. Alexia Rodriquez shut down the Vikings’ best player. Elie Smith led a balanced attack with 27 points. Jackie Jarvis added 14, Daliaja Franklin 6, Natalie Juoperri 4, Meghan Douglas 3, and Kyla Chappell and Chelsea O’Donnell 2 each. The win puts the A team at 12-1 on the season.

A life well-lived...
In 1938 she married her childhood sweetheart. They probably fell in love the first time they met. He proposed on the edge of a frozen pond in the middle of winter. She said yes and for the next 20 years, she took care of his parents, her parents and her children in a small farmhouse. There was never a Great Depression in her home because of her hard work, her unwavering faith in God and her positive nature. Remember the love she gave and let us help you honor a life well-lived.

Skillman Foundation Invests $10,000 in proven model for kids
Lansing, MI – Communities In Schools of Michigan; the Nation’s Leading Dropout Prevention organization has announced an investment by the Skillman Foundation of $10,000 to help Change the Picture of Education in Michigan by supporting the work of Communities In Schools. CIS is a network of local non-profit affiliates who follow an evidenced-based model proven to assist students to stay in school and achieve in life, by partnering with communities to deliver much needed supports and resources directly into school buildings. CIS believes every child needs and deserves: 1. A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult. 2. A safe place to learn and grow. 3. A healthy start and a healthy future. 4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation. 5. A chance to give back to peers and community. In 2013-14 CIS served over 25,000 students in Michigan through its local affiliates in Metro Detroit, Kalamazoo, Lenawee County, Mancelona, and Tecumseh. Ninety-eight percent of students targeted by CIS last year graduated, 97% were promoted to the next grade, and over 87% of graduating CIS students moved on to postsecondary learning. Over 92% of the students served by CIS in Michigan live in poverty. The investment in CIS will be used to expand services to more students throughout SE Michigan and across the State. The CIS model is a data-driven approach to providing Integrated Student Supports to students, and measuring the impact on the success of the interventions. Jeff Brown, the Director of the state office of CIS commented “the investment by the Skillman Foundation in our evidence-based model reflects a deep commitment to addressing the challenges of poverty that 47% of Michigan’s students face everyday. We are very grateful for this generous support of our work” CIS has been providing supports to students for over 40 years, beginning in Harlem in the 1970’s. The work in Michigan began 20 years ago. Communities In Schools of Michigan is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is part of the national Communities In Schools network. Last year the organization served over 1.48 million students in 26 States and District of Columbia. Communities In Schools surrounds students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Livingston County Walk for Warmth and I want to congratulate them on the success of the event. The event really showed the spirit of Livingston County and with over 400 attendees I know that we were able to do good for families in our community who struggle in the winter months to keep their homes warm. This week I want to stray from my legislative update a bit to remind everyone of the great resources that are available to us during this extremely cold weather we are having. The winter months and cold can be overwhelming but there are many options to those who may be struggling with the higher cost of heating their home. Michigna.gov has a Be Winter Wise section on the website which offers programs and options for families who may need a little extra help this winter. There is info on shut off protections, budget bill planning and emergency relief. I encourage anyone who may be struggling to check out the Be Winter Wise page! In a recent column, I discussed the beginning of the state budget process and I want to provide you with an update on how things are going. Appropriations committees are starting their budget discussions and receiving recommendations. In fact some of my colleagues and I submitted a letter to the House Appropriations chair with some of our budget recommendations to be considered in the process. Our recommendations include modernizing state programs and eliminating excess where possible. The areas focused on specifically are Venture Michigan Fund Program, the state Corrections budget, the Michigan Strategic Fund and the Michigan Public Service Commission. I think that these programs are a good place to focus and I look forward to seeing budget talks progress. The House has a goal of completing a balanced budget by May 31. I look

forward to being a part of the process and will continue to update you as it moves along. If you would like to see a full copy of the letter visit my website www.rephankvaupel.com.

Fowlerville art student has work published in magazine
Hailey Deyo, a Fowlerville senior, is on her way to becoming a published artist. Her grandfather was looking through one of his magazines that he receives (Michigan High School Athletic Association) and saw an ad seeking artwork created by high school students. Her grandpa told her about it, and she sent them one of her drawings. The editorials staff was interested in her creating a drawing for their magazine. They gave her guidelines and a subject. They wanted her to draw a picture about “Out of Season Coaching.” So she started doodling and drawing and came up with her final copy. It took about one to two weeks. She created it on her computer and sent it in. A couple weeks later she saw her artwork in the magazine. What a great experience for an up-and-coming high school artist. She plans on attending an art school next year.
Volunteers needed to deliver hot meals to homebound seniors
The Meals on Wheels Program is in critical need of volunteers to deliver hot meals to homebound seniors in the Fowlerville community. We would love the opportunity for you to be part of our team of volunteers. This is a commitment of 1-2 hours of your time, as little or as often as your schedule will permit. Volunteers not only deliver the meals, they also deliver a warm smile and a friendly greeting when they arrive at the door. For more information, please contact Lucy McKinnon at 810-632-2155.

Students participating in the Fowlerville Online Learning Academy received a wonderful surprise when they arrived at the Fowlerville Senior Center to study. They received handknitted scarves and hats from senior, Katherine Arnot. The Fowlerville Online Learning Academy is proud of their cooperative relationship with the Fowlerville Senior Center. In the Fall of 2013, the Senior Center graciously offered a portion of their office area where eight computers have been set up for online students to meet with mentors and work on their classes during the school day. The Fowlerville Online Learning Academy (FOLA) is a high school diploma program that is delivered online. It is a rigorous program that meets all of the State of Michigan graduation requirements. The program is open to students in grades sixth through twelfth grade. The program is an option for students who desire an accelerated learning pace or who are not on track to graduate and want to recover credits. Other students have been previously home schooled and are working to transition into a public school setting. “They really welcomed us with open arms,” says Grace Damerow, Administrator of the FOLA program. “It has been wonderful to watch the students form relationships with the seniors.” The students can study at the Senior Center each week, Monday through Thursday, from 9 to noon. Joan Bartkowiak and Brenda Dunham are FOLA mentors who are certified teachers, providing tutoring and assisting students in their independent online studies. Joan Bartkowiak commented, “It is such a wonderful place. They are just so friendly and they truly want us to be there. It is so warm and inviting.” The FOLA Senior Lab is located outside the Senior Center main office. Fowlerville Community Schools updated the FSC electrical service and brought in tables, computers, and chairs. Great relationships have resulted. Last year one senior, Doug, was concerned about a friend living in the Philippines during the earthquake and hurricane. Mentors and students did research online for Doug and were able to give the senior information about the area the friend was living in, which eased his mind. Some of the students started clipping coupons for Doug so he could purchase toothpaste and other household items to take with him to the Philippines. He is currently visiting his friend. One of the FOLA kids even helped the seniors change the light bulb in their lunch room. Seniors also get the benefit of using computers provided by Fowlerville Community Schools. The latest gift of hats and scarves to the students was heart (and head) warming! “We can’t thank the Fowlerville Senior Center enough for sharing their space, time, and friendship with our students,” said Damerow.

Fowlerville Art Club creates Valentines for Vets
Catholic Charities holding Salute to the Stars & Celebrity Dance Competition
Fowlerville High School Art Club artistically created Valentines for Vets. They were sent to the VA Hospital in Battle Creek where they were distributed to many Veterans that served our country. This program was created in 1989 by Ann Landers as a way to thank our Veterans for their service. As many as 98,000 military men and women are in the VA hospitals around the country. We hoped these cards brightened their Valentine’s Day. Pictured from left to right are: Emily Wylie, Bianca Henley, Noel Brake and Sky Ferranti.

Senior Spotlight-- Emily Nelson
By Chelsea Stanley Senior Emily Laura Nelson is the daughter of Ron Nelson and Lisa Nelson. Her brother Jon Nelson and only sibling graduated from Webberville in 2012. She has attended Webberville Schools her whole life and looks forward to moving on with her future; yet, she is reflective of what she gained through her involvement in high school. “Sports have been a huge part of my life through the past four years, and they have taught me to be dedicated and how to push myself,” said Nelson. Through high school, Nelson has been involved with many extracurricular activities. Among these are athletics where she has participated in volleyball for four years, basketball for four years, and softball for four years. “We will miss Emily’s loyal and devoted love for us as her coaches and to us as people. It has been fun to push her to the edge of uncomfortable and watch her grow as a player and a person. She is an incredible young lady and we can’t wait to watch her gain additional confidence as she heads for college. She will be missed,” said Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Kris Tennant. Even as a three season athlete, Nelson has made time to maintain good grades and be a member of the National Honor Society and journalism. “I have really come to appreciate Emily’s motivation and perseverance,” said journalism advisor Colleen Scott Keiser. “She is willing to work toward a goal, take on added assignments, and has a great sense of humor along the way. These attributes will lend much success to her future.” Nelson has not only left her mark through athletics and extracurricular events, but through the relationships she has made as well. Friend and fellow senior, Kayla Crandall, describe Nelson as “very optimistic, outgoing, and always positive. She’s a great friend and I can count on her for anything.” After graduating high school Nelson would like to attend either Grand Valley State University or Ferris State University for a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Nelson has always loved to help people, and she has always has had her mind set on pursuing her dream of having a job in the health field. “My advice for underclassmen is to be involved in as much as you possibly can. High school goes by really fast so try to make the most of it,” said Nelson.

Capital Area District Libraries shoot & score with the Tournament of Books
As March Madness gets ready to kick off in the sports world, Capital Area District Libraries (CADL) is giving Young Adult book buffs something to cheer about in the library world. CADL’s Tournament of Books will pit titles selected by teams of individual CADL librarians against each other in a bracket format, with library patrons voting for their favorites each week. CADL’s Tournament will be headlined by MSU Basketball legend, Greg Kelser, who will be acting as Honorary Commissioner. Even if you are not a basketball legend, you can make your voice heard about which teen sleepers and hit novels you want to advance by voting online at cadl.org/ tournament or via printed form in any of our 13 branches. After the first round on March 7, a drawing will take place for two movie tickets to NCG Cinemas. This drawing will occur after each of the four rounds in the tournament. Finally, a grand prize will be awarded by drawing from the top winning brackets. This Tournament Prize Package includes event tickets and autographed items from MSU Coach Tom Izzo, and, of course, Greg Kelser. The current popularity in Young Adult lit has been led by successes like The Hunger Games and Divergent series, but books geared towards younger audiences are more than just blockbuster inspiring novels. Less well recognized titles are also worthy of attention, and CADL’s Tournament of Books is hoping to broadcast both pro and amateur titles. Jolee Hamlin, CADL Associate Director of Public Service, and the creator of CADL’s Tournament of Books, says, “Teen books have been one of the fastest growing publishing areas for several years. Some outstanding titles are showcased, including a few sleepers that you may have missed. Teen books have big appeal, for both teens and others, which make them a perfect fit for CADL’s March Madness style Tournament of Books. We hope our readers enjoy and vote often!”

Student of the Week-- Hannah Brock
By Hannah Mills Congratulations to this week’s student of the week, Hannah Brock who is a freshman at Fowlerville High School. Her family includes her mom, Jenny, her dad, Bob, and her sister Maddie. She is currently enrolled in American History, Sophomore Lit and Comp, Earth Science, Algebra I, Communications through Digital Media, and Spanish. Her favorite class is Algebra I because she learns a bunch and has a lot of fun with all of the group work that is done in that class. Her favorite teacher is “definitely Mrs. Naimo because she not only is a funny and unique character, she is also a fantastic teacher who is always willing to help.” If Hannah could change anything about FHS it would be to put it in New York City because she always wants to be there. However, she loves the people and the teachers. Hannah says, “I have met some amazing people I know I won’t forget.”
Her plan after high school is to attend the fashion institute of technology to study fashion design and business. After school, Hannah likes to sing, create things with her sewing machine, sketch, write, and she is currently learning how to play the piano. When spending time with her family, she enjoys getting together at huge family parties where everyone is always happy. Hannah’s favorite memory with her friends was going to fair last summer with Cassie and almost falling out of the sea dragon while simultaneously getting bruises and ending the day with cotton candy. Her friend Cassie says, “Hannah is just an overall great person. She always tries to make people feel better and she’s super smart. Hannah is also incredibly funny. I’m so lucky to have her as a friend.” During her high school career, she most look forward to making memories with my best friends and learning everything I can. Hannah has many favorite movies, bands, TV shows, books, and games. Her favorite movies are straight out of the 80s which include: Pretty in Pink, Footloose, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Some other favorites are her bands: Pink Floyd and the All American Rejects. She also enjoys watching One Tree Hill, Criminal Minds, and Project Runway. When she’s not participating in other activities, she enjoys playing Rummy, Monopoly, and loves Mario Party games. Hannah’s advice to her peers is, “Keep your grades up and hold on to your true friends; that’s all that really matters.” Hannah was nominated by Mrs. Mangan, Mrs. Zemper, Mrs. Collins, and Mrs. Naimo. Mrs. Naimo commented, “I have Hannah twice a day - for Sophomore Literature and Video Editing. She is scholarly and imaginative at the same

Card of Thanks
Many, many thanks to everyone who came out to the benefit dinner and basketball games on Friday, Feb. 6. This was a benefit dinner to help raise money for myself and my family for medical costs that have accumulated over the last five years while I have been fighting Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. I was so overwhelmed with the outpouring of love, people, prayers, donations to the silent auction, the special treats that were made for the bake sale, and the tee-shirts to show your support , not only for myself, but for others out there fighting as well. A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped plan the event, worked at the event, cleaned up after the event, to Frazzini Photography who took awesome pictures all night long, and to the ladies at Uptown Alure in Fowlerville for doing my hair and make-up so that I would feel extra special for the night. Thank you to my husband of almost 21 years, my three children, my parents, my brother and his family, my in-laws, cousins, grandparents, church family, my Titan family, my “girls night out” gals, and the best neighbors anyone could ever ask for. I thank them for years of support, the meals that were sent to the house, watching Lydia, driving me to and from chemo treatments, sitting with me for hours in the hospital, to the girls for our nights out that consisted of just a few of us sitting around and laughing at each others’ problems (But you know the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.”), and for all the thoughts and prayers that were directed for me and my family. God is good, and I know that I am able to be here, today, because of all the prayers. Not too many people can say that they have Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer and have made it over five years, and can still be working and managing their household. I am very proud to have made it this far. I owe it all to the good Lord for answering the prayers and holding my hand through all of this. I am so glad that He granted me more time to be with all the wonderful people in my life, especially a six-year-old girl who needs her mom the most. I am a survivor, I will keep fighting the fight with everything I’ve got in me, and with all your thoughts and prayers there is hope. Thank you again to everyone, and it should bring comfort to you knowing that we live in such a loving, caring, and generous community. Cancer is not easy, but with the prayers and support of family, friends, and co-workers it makes going through it all easier…and knowing that you have a community behind you to catch you when you fall, makes it that much sweeter. Remember: Ovarian Cancer Awareness & No One Fights Alone! With much love and affection Janet (Rhodes) Hines & Family

Medical supply company to build new manufacturing facility in Fowlerville
By Steve Horton A medical supply company plans to build a new manufacturing facility in Fowlerville at 919 Garden Lane. Medical Comfort Specialists LLC is a manufacturer of precision machined patient positioners, made from foam, that are used for medical purposes. Its product portfolio includes other products as well. “We’re a contract manufacturer that creates requested products,” said Randy McPhee, co-owner of the company. “We supply comfort products to Imaging OEM’s. We’re a preferred supplier to General Electric, Siemens, and Phillips as well as many other medical device companies. Our products include head rests, donuts, and arm cradles that are used to assist patients by making them more comfortable and stationary when undergoing medical procedures or when under medical care. We also manufacture a resistive warming pad used for operating room and surgical applications. These special pads keep a patient warm. We also do high-tech applications for MRI and CT scans and Radiation Therapy.” McPhee and his partner, Doug Sprague, founded the company in 1991 and have operated from a building in Brighton. “We’ve run out of space,” said McPhee. “Our current manufacturing facility is 20,000 square feet. We’re in the process of purchasing four acres and will construct a 38,500 square-foot building with the potential to add another 20,000 square feet.” The commitment to locate in Fowlerville hinged on the company obtaining an Industrial Tax Exemption from the Village of Fowlerville. This would grant a 50 percent reduction on the real property taxes for a 12-year period. The investment by the company, in applying for this exemption, was put at $2,026,250. The application indicated that the current 21-employee base would be retained and that approximately 10 more employees would be added during the scope of the project. Council granted that reduction at last Monday’s meeting. The company also needs to receive final site plan approval for the building from the Village Planning Commission. A preliminary site plan review took place at the commission’s February meeting. A special meeting was called for this past Thursday (past the newspaper deadline) to deal with that final site plan. If approved, as expected, McPhee said the company intends to close on the property and start construction later this month, as soon as the weather permits, with the goal of being in operation by the end of the year. “We’re excited about coming to Fowlerville,” he said. “We’re up against the wall in our current (Brighton) facility. Our business has been growing, and we need more space to expand our capacity by adding more manufacturing equipment, more room to expand the number of employees, and more room for inventory.” Fred Dillingham, President of Livingston Business Development Associates, said that he had been working with Randy and Doug for over a year. “We initially looked for an existing (vacant) building that would meet their needs in the greater Livingston County area,” he said. “When we were unable to find a suitable one, we then began looking at building sites.” McPhee said that one of the goals in the search was to
locate in or near Livingston County for the convenience of the existing employees. The Fowlerville site fit this goal, along with having room to expand and easy access to the freeway. Another factor, he pointed out, is that he found Fowlerville and local officials “to be business friendly.” Dillingham, in addressing council last Monday, pointed to the fact that this was a medical supply company. “Nearly all of our other companies in the community are auto-related,” he added. “I’m excited about Medical Comfort Specialists coming to Fowlerville because it provides diversification. The medical area is a growing area of the economy. “This is a nice sized company to bring to the community,” Dillingham said. “It’s a high-tech firm with skilled employees. It has customers all around the United States and overseas.”

Can You Find Your Child in this Checklist? Rita, age 11, used to be confident...ready to take on the world. But after starting middle school, she seems like a different person: hesitant and unsure of herself. Ryan’s mom, Becky, worries because Ryan is so easily wounded. Things said to him by the other kids at school hurt his feelings so easily. Ryan’s hypersensitivity is a constant source of stress for Becky. The peace of the household is frequently disturbed. Everything is a battle: getting ready for school; dinner time; homework; even things that used to be enjoyable family activities are now potential battles. Screaming matches occur on a regular basis. Paula is so concerned about being popular. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, worry that this will make her an easy target for negative peer pressure. Tyler, age 4, does great when he gets it right the first time when learning something new. When he doesn’t get it on the first try, though, he becomes totally frustrated and says “I’ll never be able to do it!” Mr. and Mrs. Hall are frustrated at the level of disrespect demonstrated by their children. The kids never used to talk like this before! The Halls think, “If I had talked like that when I was a kid - I would have gotten clobbered!” Suzanne is constantly down on herself, often saying, “I’m not as pretty as Elizabeth”, or “I’ll never be popular like Marta”. Scott used to be a nice, kind child. Lately, though, he has become increasingly aggressive. His parents, Vern and Becky, are concerned... and they’ve already had two calls from the school about Scott’s bullying of younger children. The teachers say that Charlie can’t focus in school, and might need to be medicated. Nicole and Bryan, his parents, hate that idea. They feel that Charlie just needs to learn listening and focus skills. They are frustrated... how can they build the skills Charlie really needs? If you’ve “found” your child on the checklist (and most people do!)... read on...You just might find the big BREAKTHROUGH you’ve been seeking for your child!
Ohana Karate -
Dear Fellow Parents, You’re probably thinking “come on...how can punching and kicking improve my child’s self confidence, focus and self control?” Well, I’m here to tell you, in many more ways than you can begin to imagine. I am Sam Larioza, a resident of Fowlerville and father of two wonderful teenagers. I’ve spent much of my life teaching and mentoring young people. I’ve worked with thousands of kids (just like yours!) over the last 25 years. So, back to the question “How can karate do all this?!” Look at it this way. Your child’s first and biggest challenge comes not from “fighting for his rights on the street”, or “beating up the neighborhood bully”. It comes, instead, from battling more sinister forces. Your child’s own fears and self doubts! “I’m not as smart as John.” “I’m just not good at math.” “I wish I was as (strong, pretty, popular) as Sally.” “Why does Jim keep picking on me?” Well here is the secret: Karate is less about your child learning to fight others, and more about fighting...himself. His innermost fears and self doubts. Conquer them, and your child unleashes within himself a powerful, unstoppable force. A force that gives him the strength to kick down the doors of his own self doubts, a force that opens your child to the exalting power of values and the ability to reach his full potential. For more information go to www.ohanakarate.com or just give me a call at (517) 586-1001. Yours for Rock Solid Kids,
Sam Larioza

Clayton Klein, continued
“He always took time for us kids,” said Darrell. “He spent a lot of time with me when I was a little guy. Later, all of those canoe trips we took together were very valuable to me. The first one was in Canada, back in 1958 when I was 13. “I grew up in the family business (Klein Fertilizer),” Darrell added. “I eventually took over in 1984. He was great to work with and always asked my opinion.” “Dad and I took a lot of trips together,” said Deb. “There were the family vacations when I was young. Dad flew his plane to Canada, the Rockies, Mexico, and Central America. I started off going with him on canoe trips in Michigan and then accompanied him on his wilderness adventures in northern Canada. We also took a canoe trip through the Everglades in Florida. “We did a lot of hiking on trails in the Western United States,” she noted. “In more recent years, he liked to walk sections of the abandoned railroad lines in Michigan. I’d bike it, while he hiked. “My dad was always there when I needed him,” Deb said. “He always wanted to share his life with us.” Clayton was born on Feb. 24, 1919, on the family farm in Conway Township to George and Gertrude (Avery) Klein. He had an older sister, Bernice. Like most boys growing up on a farm, he helped his family with the various chores and seasonal tasks. He attended the nearby Sixteen Country School through eighth grade and went to Fowlerville High School, graduating in 1936. After high school, he attended Michigan State College for two years, taking an agricultural short course. He worked in Gratiot County as a milk tester for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He then returned home to work on the farm with his father. Soon after, in 1941, he married Marjorie Nash. While farming, Clayton began using bagged fertilizer and lime to improve the yields. That eventually led to his going into a lime-spreading business and this quickly evolved into establishing Klein Fertilizer, with a small plant located next to the railroad tracks in Fowlerville. Klein Fertilizer Company grew in size and scope during the ensuing years. Additional plants were established in other Michigan communities. “At the height of our operations, we had five plants,” noted Darrell. Two events occurred during the early years that had impacts on his life: learning to fly and walking. To keep up with his growing business operations, Clayton purchased a plane. While air travel allowed him to get from one plant to the other, or to attend businesses conferences in other states, the plane also provided him a means to begin taking vacations to faraway locales with family and friends. As for walking, he hurt his back while unloading bags of fertilizer. Rather than undergo an impending surgical operation, he took the advice given to him by a chiropractor to try walking. That exercise not only fixed his sore back, it became a passion. He kept track of his mileage early on and had reached over 68,000 miles at the time of his death. “I think he initially counted the miles as a way of motivating himself,” said Darrell. “Then he started challenging himself with longer trips, and these were added to the total.” “He was still walking this past December,” noted Deb. “We went to Florida. There was a lake, and Dad would walk around it each day. It was about a mile trip.” Clayton kept a diary from the time he was young. He used those notes and other material as an author. His first book Cold Summer Wind, started in 1982 and published the following year, was about the canoe trips Darrell and he had taken in northern Canada, above the 60th Parallel. He penned it about the same time his sister, Bernice Chappel, was writing a memoir In the Palm of the Mitten about the Klein family and growing up in rural Fowlerville. He decided to publish the book himself and established a company, Wilderness Adventure Books. As an author, Clayton went on to finish eight books, with the last one My First 90 Years coming out in 2012. As the owner of Wilderness Adventure Books, assisted by his wife Marjorie, the company published the works of numerous other writers. He also gave lectures to various groups, telling them of his canoe excursions and to promote his books. After selling the publishing company, the couple established Klein’s Booklien, a business that supplied publishers’ overstock books to bookstores. They would buy remainders from various publishers at a low bulk price, and then resold them at a wholesale price to stores, as well as to the public at their Fowlerville location or through their catalogue. After Marjorie passed away in 2003, Clayton remained busy. He published a book A Well-Kept Secret in 2007 and continued with his long walks. He challenged himself by going across the width of Michigan from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. Then at age 85 he decided to go the length of the state, starting at Paradise in the Upper Michigan, timing his walk so that he could cross the Mackinac Bridge on Labor
Day, and proceeding south to the town of Hell in Livingston County. From there he continued on to the Ohio border. He also decided to capitalize on the publicity the effort garnered by raising money for Hospice. “The walk was 417 miles,” noted Deb and Darrell. “He did it five times, the last one being when he was 90 years old.” His age, the distance, and the charity inspired many others to join him on different stretches of the journey. Darrell noted that he started off with his father one time at Paradise, but after two days was falling behind. “He was covering 25 miles a day, a little more than me,” Darrell laughed. “I joined him for different stretches in lower Michigan,” added Deb. Clayton and his walk were featured in several newspaper stories and reports on local TV newscasts. Motel billboards on his route would have messages welcoming ‘The Walking Man.’ “He got a hug from Gov. Jennifer Granholm one year at the Mackinac Bridge,” said Darrell. “She told him that he was an inspiration.” *** Among those who knew Clayton for many years were Mary Miller and Ken Rice. Mary and her late husband, Henry R. Miller, were dairy farmers and neighbors of the Klein’s. “He was a big help to area farmers with the fertilizer business,” said Mary. “He helped their bottom line when he started spreading the lime and then testing their soil and selling the fertilizers. They also had the equipment to spray or spread the fertilizers and could do it in a few hours Otherwise the farmer would have had to spend the whole day. This service saved the farmers a lot of time.” Mary recalled that she and Hank joined the Farm Bureau 60 years ago this fall. “Marjorie and Clayton were
original members,” she said. “We spent time with them at the meetings. Also, Debbie and our daughter, Becky, were friends.” Mary said that Clayton’s walking as a cure for his sore back inspired others to do the same. She noted that she encouraged one of her co-workers, who had a bad back, to try this remedy. “Pretty soon my friend was walking all around,” Mary said. Ken said that Clayton was “like a second father to me,” adding “If I hadn’t had my father, I’d have wanted him to be mine. He treated me like a son.” Ken worked two different stints at Klein Fertilizers for a total of over 20 years. “I did sales and service during most of those years, and during my last year there I was the manager for the Fowlerville plant. He and Darrell were awful good to work for.” Ken described Clayton “as a top notch man,” adding “I never saw him lose his temper although there were a few times maybe he should have with me. He was a gentleman all the way through, and honest as the day was long. I miss him already.”
Fowlerville Wrestlers, continued to state. Kyle Roberts, a junior at 140 lbs., placed third in the regional meet. He was also a third-place finisher at both the districts and in the conference finals. He has a 24-6 record. This is his second trip to the state meet. He did not place in last year’s tournament. The Division II State Finals are once again being held at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Action begins this Thursday and continues on Friday and Saturday.
