Bob & Shelia Larson named Grand Marshals of Christmas Parade By Steve Horton Bob and Shelia Larson have been named as Grand Marshals of this year’s Christmas Parade. Both had long careers as educators with the Fowlerville Community Schools and have been volunteers for different community groups and activities. Bob spent 38 years as a teacher, retiring in 2012.”I taught every grade from third thru eighth, was an assistant principal for a year, taught drivers education, and coached sports,” Larson said in an interview back in 2012. “Of the various age levels, ¿fth grade was my favorite. That’s where I spent most of my career. The kids are still very enthusiastic, but at age 10 and 11 they have become a little more mature. You can do more with them.”

Till next week: “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer-you’ll go down in history!

Christmas is coming; the geese are getting fat, Please to put a Nickle in an old man’s hat. Yes, Christmas is coming and the Fowlerville Library has a fantastic collection of ‘holiday’ reads, CD’s, DVD’s and more! Do come in this month to check out some merry reading and holiday viewing! It is always fun to explore the different traditions of Christmas. For example, the custom of embracing under a sprig of mistletoe or the adoption of the poinsettia as the Christmas Ă€ower. Did you know the adoption of the poinsettia as the Christmas Ă€ower is relatively recent, dating from 1828? The plant is native to Mexico. As early as the 18th century, Mexicans called the plant ³Àower of the blessed night,â€? because of its resemblance to the Star of Bethlehem. In 1828, Dr. -oel 3oinsett, the Âżrst 8S ambassador to Mexico, brought the plant into the States, where it was renamed in his honor. We all know about Santa and his reindeer but do we know where Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer originated from? It was Chicago, 1939. “Rollo, the Red-Nosed Reindeerâ€? and “Reginald, the Red-Nosed Reindeerâ€? are names that were considered for the most famous reindeer of all. The now traditional Christmas song began as a poem, a free handout to department store shoppers. In 1939, the Montgomery Ward department store in Chicago sought something novel for its Santa Claus to distribute to parents and children. Robert May, an advertising copywriter for the store, suggested an illustrated poem, printed in a booklet, that families would want to save and re-read each holiday. May conceived the idea of a shiny-nosed reindeer, a Santa’s helper. Rudolph became the name because of his four-year old daughter when Rollo and Reginald were nixed! In 1947, May decided to put the poem to music. Singer after singer declined the opportunity to sing the song, but in 1949 Gene Autry consented. And we all know what happened

High School ‘Coat Drive Team thanks community for support

On behalf of the Coat Drive Team at Fowlerville High School, we would like to thank the Fowlerville Community for your generosity! Over the course of one week, we had over 450 winter items of all sizes donated -- warm coats, cozy sweatshirts, hats, gloves, and scarves. We also had a plentiful gift of money given to our cause. During Thanksgiving week, parents and students were welcome to shop the collection and help themselves. Numerous residents received the gear they needed to be warm! Because we have a very large amount of goods still available, we are going to host a Community Coat Shopping Event in the High School Cafeteria on Thursday, December 11 from 4pm to 7pm (more details to follow.) Everyone is welcome to come browse the amazing, free selection. Please save the date so you can help yourself to warm gear for your family, your friends, your neighbors, your coworkers, anyone, everyone! Let’s help everyone to stay warm this holiday season!

Good Reasons to Sell Your Home During the Holidays

People looking are more serious about buying. Serious buyers have fewer houses to choose from, less inventory available, so you have less competition. 3. Houses tend to “show betterâ€? with holiday decor. 4. After the holidays the supply of listings increases substantially which lowers the demand for your home. 5. Buyers can be more emotional during the holiday season. 6. Buyers have more time to look during the holidays, as opposed to normal work-schedules at non-seasonal times. 7. 0DQ\ ZLOO EX\ WR WDNH DGYDQWDJH RI \HDU HQG WD[ EHQHĂ€WV 8. January is the month for some job transfers. If transferees cannot wait until spring, you must be on the market! 9. You can sell now, but specify a delayed closing or extended occupancy until next year if you prefer. 10. By selling now you have an opportunity to buy during the spring, when more houses are on the market!

Senior Spotlight-- Chelsey Stanley By Emily Nelson Chelsey Ann Stanley is a senior at Webberville High school that has a bright future ahead of her. Stanley is the daughter of Kevin Stanley and Jennifer Sales and the sister to Ashley Stanley who graduated from Fowlerville High School. Stanley transferred to Webberville her sophomore year and has been involved in numerous things since then. “I really like how involved the high school is with the community,” said Stanley. “I am glad I decided to come here.” She has been in competitive cheer for two years and sideline cheer for two years. She has also been a part of the FFA for three years and currently serves as a vice president for the chapter. This year, she was the captain of the state winning broiler team. “Chelsea is a compassionate person with a strong regard for her commitments,” said FFA Advisor Colleen Scott Keiser. “She has a solid work ethic evidenced by her ability to manage her busy involvement in school with her job milking at Risch Farms. There are few high school students that can balance an a.m. milking schedule and an academic and extracurricular schedule. Moreover, she raises swine, milk and beef projects for both the Fowlerville and Ingham County Fairs.” FFA has had a large inÀuence on her life and she has been a big part of the program. “My favorite memory from high school was going to National Convention for FFA,” said Stanley. While she is ready to move on she certainly will miss a lot about Webberville High School. “The thing that I am going to miss most is always seeing my friends and going to all of the sporting and FFA events,” said Stanley. Stanley will also be missed by her friends. Teammate and fellow FFA of¿cer Jenna Kingsley said “What I am going to miss most about Chelsea is her humor. She always cheers me up on my worst days, and I don¶t know who is going to ¿ll her shoes.” Along with excelling in academics, Stanley also has a full time job at the Risch Farm owned by Bill and Dawn Risch. During the summer she participates in showing cows, horses, and pigs at the Fowlerville and Ingham county fairs. “Showing at fair since I was little, has taught me great responsibility and dedication that I will carry with me throughout my future,” said Stanley. Through her work at Risch Farms, she has found a passion for taking care of animals and she plans to study dairy herd management and nutrition. After graduation, she plans to attend Michigan State University and get a degree in animal science. Stanley’s advice to underclassmen is to “get involved in everything that you can, high school will be over before you know it.” She would like to thank Ms. Scott and Mr. Wheeler for being such a great inÀuence for her and always pushing her to do her best.

It’s not about the Apps; Webberville students using IPads in classroom

McKenna Stubbert, a 9th grader, presents her story created on the iPad in English 9.

%ULDQ%HKQNH#'LFN6FRWW FRP

By Katie Pingle Webberville English teacher IPads are in the hands of all students, teachers, and administrators at Webberville High School, a wish granted to the district this year by the Whole School Technology Grant. Although this is the ¿rst year of implementing the one-toone technology program, Webberville High School students are already using their iPads as tools for learning. When students received their iPads, mathematics teacher Tina Haskell assisted students with creating Schoology accounts, a learning management app. This app is being utilized by many teachers and allows students to submit assignments, participate in discussions, and take assessments. While some applications, like Schoology, seem to have a universal purpose which can bene¿t all classrooms, other apps are content speci¿c. Jenn Andrechek recently gave to the Webberville Board of Education presentation on apps being used in her science classes. Andrechek’s chemistry students use applications such as Educreation, a presentation creator, to make learning visible, and Skitch, a photo-editing app, to visualize concepts like atomic structure and electron con¿guration. English 9 students recently completed a project on their iPads in which they became creatures in The Hobbit. Students used a storytelling app, Shadow Puppet Edu, which allowed students to select images from the Internet, draw pictures by hand, and use photo editing apps. Students then recorded themselves narrating their stories. By using AirPlay, the videos were presented directly from the student iPads to the classroom projector. Along with affording new learning opportunities, students are recognizing other bene¿ts to the one-to-one iPad technology. “The iPad allows me to have my email, planner, and homework all in one place. I can do anything from reading a book in English to checking my grades in PowerSchool” said Clare Theriault, WHS senior. All good things bring challenges, and students, teachers, administrators, and parents are working together through these. “A big challenge is learning the new technology for the ¿rst time if you have never used it,” stated junior George Curtis. Although learning has a different face at Webberville High School this year, many things haven’t changed. Teachers and administrators are still dedicated to student achievement as they work to ensure students have the skill set required of the next generation. While the iPad technology is providing new opportunities to the district, it has remained clear that the focus is not on the new apps, it’s on the students.

Webberville Art Program – Individual Focus for the Future

The Webberville Fine Arts Department continues to expand to offer opportunities for students who have an interest in the visual arts. Students have the chance to work with graphic design, digital art, sculpting, painting, photography and a vast array of artistic expressions. “Independent study art students have the opportunity to explore a variety of different mediums” stated art teacher Dean Wilson, “We work with them to identify their career interests and tailor their course of study to meet speci¿c project goals.” Senior Hannah Solace, an independent study student, recently completed doing a ‘high pour’ for a special effects silicone mold. When she’s done, she will be creating ‘creature dentures’. Hannah also recently ¿nish a wood burning project in honor of her grandfathers, Tony Solace and Chester Rudziak. “In Hannah’s case, she is planning on pursing special effects when she graduates in the spring. Her dream is to work for 3eter -ackson director of the ‘/ord of the Rings’ ¿lms ” commented Wilson. The opportunity to work independently under the direction of 0r.
