Practical Money Skills Is your teen ready for a summer job? By Jason Alderman For many teens, there’s nothing more exciting than receiving the ¿rst paycheck from a summer job ¹ a sure-¿re ticket to fun and freedom. It’s also a great opportunity for parents to encourage proper money management. Parents or guardians need to do some necessary paperwork ¿rst. Working teens will need his or her own Social Security Number (SSN) to legally apply for a job. They will also need a SSN to open a bank account to deposit their paychecks. Depending on state law, children under 18 may have to open bank accounts in their custodial name with their parents or guardians. It is also important for parents to check in with quali¿ed tax or ¿nancial advisors about their teen’s earned income, particularly if it may affect any investments under the child’s name. After that, it’s about encouraging teens to get a jump on their job search. The recent job market for American teens has been tough and investigating particular kinds of openings should start months in advance of summer hire. Networking is also important ¹ teens can reach out to friends, neighbors and other trusted adults about potential jobs in the community. Also, it is never too early for teens to learn resume writing and job interviewing skills. The Practical Money Skills website’s Landing a Job (http://www.practicalmoneyskills. com/personal¿nance/lifeevents/work/landingjob.php) page offers useful background to help teens get started. Parents can also assist by monitoring job categories their kids are interested in, encouraging them to meet application deadlines and being aware of federal, state and local child labor laws (http://www.youthrules.dol.gov/know-the-limits/ index.htm) to steer them from unscrupulous employers. Technology changes quickly, so tech-savvy teens may be ahead of the game when it comes to searching for work online. Leading job search engines are a destination for seasonal job openings, and many allow users to customize searches for speci¿c positions and employers. However, teens may need to be reminded about their social media activity before they begin any job search ¹ anything a teen posts publicly on the Internet may be seen by a potential employer. Banking is another major step in the life of the working teen, though they don’t need to wait for that ¿rst job to get started. Many parents open bank accounts for their children as early as their ¿rst allowance ¹ after all, digital banking makes it easier to monitor and transfer money without a trip to the branch or ATM. Paychecks ¹ on paper or via digital deposit ¹ make familiarity with the banking system an even greater necessity. Check with their bank to see what types of accounts are offered

for children and teens ¹ some banks offer a wide variety of custodial accounts where parents can track and assist their child’s spending and saving activity. A teen’s ¿rst job is a great opportunity to introduce budgeting, saving and long-term investment skills. Your child may be working over the summer to save for a particular desired item ¹ a cell phone or a trip ¹ or more extensive goals like future college expenses. The Practical Money Skills site offers a budgeting tutorial (http://www.practicalmoneyskills. com/personal¿nance/savingspending/budgeting/) and budgeting calculators (http://www.practicalmoneyskills. com/calculators/budgetGoals.php"calcCategory budget) for a range of purposes. When the job offer comes, there’s one more thing parents can do. Getting hired means a Àurry of paperwork that can be confusing; parents can help their children review those documents before signature. Most will apply to tax withholding, but such documents might also include special workplace agreements that might not always be clear to young workers. When that ¿rst paycheck arrives, consider sitting down to inspect a teen’s ¿rst paper or electronic pay stub. Many people don’t understand their withholding even as adults, so children can bene¿t greatly from this lesson at the start of their working lives. Bottom line: A teen’s ¿rst summer job is a great way for parents and children to collaborate on job-hunting and money management skills that will produce bene¿ts for a lifetime. -DVRQ $OGHUPDQ GLUHFWV 9LVDœV ¿QDQFLDO HGXFDWLRQ programs. Ask the Michigan State Trooper

By Sgt. Michael Sura Over my career as a law enforcement ofÂżcer, I have responded to several incidents of cardiac arrest. The thing that I have always remembered about this type of incident is that they can happen fast, and every moment counts. Sudden cardiac arrest symptoms are immediate and drastic. Symptoms can cause someone to collapse suddenly, have no pulse, no breathing, and lose consciousness. Sometimes other signs precede sudden cardiac arrest. These may include fatigue, blackouts, dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, palpitations, sweating, and vomiting. It can also occur with no warning at all. When the heart stops, the lack of oxygenated blood can cause brain damage or death in only four to six minutes. Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Over 350,000 people will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest this year in the United States. This can happen to anyone, at any time, at any age. The average response time for Âżrst responders is approximately 5 to 8 minutes. An AED, or Automated External DeÂżbrillator, is an effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest. For every minute deÂżbrillation is delayed, the chances of survival decreases about 10 . However, if a deÂżbrillation device is used within the Âżrst few moments, it can increase one’s survival chances immensely. Sudden cardiac arrest is not the same as having a Âłheart attack´. Sudden cardiac arrest is a malfunction of the heart’s electrical system. It causes the heart to beat rapidly, then erratically, and then stop

all together. A Âłheart attack´ is when there is a blockage of the artery, resulting in a lack of oxygen to the heart muscle. Make no mistake-- this can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. A deÂżbrillator helps restore the normal heartbeat, which in turn keeps oxygen moving through the body. If you think someone is showing signs of cardiac arrest, have that person sit down to rest and keep calm. Loosen any tight clothing. Ask if the person takes any chest pain medication for a known heart condition, such as nitroglycerin, and help them take it. Call for help. Do not leave the person alone except to call for help, if necessary. Do not allow the person to deny the symptoms and convince you to not call emergency for help. Do not wait to see if the symptoms go away. Do not give anything by mouth unless a heart medication has been prescribed. The MSP Brighton Post currently has 9 DeÂżbrillators in service, and we are working to obtain more. I would like to thank Courtney Alexander, who is a driving force in our area and across the state for getting deÂżbrillators in police vehicles. Courtney Alexander, as you may or may not know, is a former resident of Hamburg Township and survivor of sudden cardiac arrest. Since that time Courtney, has continuously worked to obtain funding to provide deÂżbrillators for police ofÂżcers. Courtney was able to donate a deÂżbrillator to our post as a result of her efforts. If you have questions or comments please email them to askatrooper12@gmail.com, or mail them to Ask A Trooper, Michigan State Police – Brighton Post, 4337 Buno Road, Brighton, MI 48116.

WHY GRADES ARE IMPORTANT

(Find out why grades are an indicator of your child’s future) As parents we all want our kids to get good grades in school, right? But why? I am Sam Larioza, a father of two awesome kids and owner of Ohana Karate. Over the last 12 years we have helped hundreds of parents in our community raise their children. Many have underestimated the importance of their kid’s grades in school. Here is the secret: How a child performs in school sets in place the habits, attitudes and character traits they will carry into young adulthood and have for the rest of their lives! Parents ďŹ nd this story helpful in understanding this concept: “There are 3 types of people in this worldâ€? Type 1: “Always does a little bit more than anyone expects!â€? You can easily tell if a child is in this group. They consistently get all A’s and B’s in school. They are the ones on the team that always hustle. They are the ones that read one extra chapter or practice the piano 5 extra minutes! Type 2: “Always does just enough to get by!â€? The indicators for this group are students that get A’s and B’s in some classes (the ones they like) and D’s and F’s in others. They are the kids on the sports ďŹ eld that always do just enough and not any more. They are the kids that will see how poorly or slowly they can do a chore at home and get away with it. Type 3: “Are always trying to do less than they have to!â€? They typically do this by taking shortcuts or even cheating. They struggle in almost every aspect of school. On the sports ďŹ eld they stop or quit when they think no one is looking. They blame everybody and everything for why they can’t do something. So, which group is your child in? ...You are probably thinking “This is all ďŹ ne and good but what can you do?â€?

Here is the key: We are all products of our life experiences! And right now your child’s biggest life experience is coming from school! They spend 7 hours a day, 5 days a week there! Every single decision and act they do at school develops their attitudes and most of all their HABITS! I am running out of space, but here are 3 tips our parents use: 1. “Open the envelope - You need to open the letter containing their report card and know their grade in every single class. Better yet, go online and know their grades all the time and let them know that you do! 2. “Never, ever miss a parent-teacher conference - Parents will skip the conference because they know their kids are doing “okay or they have more important things to do. Never, ever miss one. Ever! 3. “Make grades important to you - Grades must be important to you. Both #1 and #2 do this but you need to take one step further. Don’t nag your child but talk about school and grades all the time. Grades are important to us! We talk about school and grades all the time. We require every student to turn their report cards in to us. If you need any more tips or help with your child’s performance in school give me a call or email. You do not need to be a student at our karate school. We just want to help every child in our community. It makes all of us better!

Yours for Rock Solid Kids.

VARSITY BASEBALL On Monday night, March 30, the Fowlerville Varsity Baseball team opened its season against Linden, winning both games. In game one, Fowlerville won 2-0 behind a great pitching performance from Eric Fritz. He struck out 8 while allowing only 4 hits. In game 2, Fowlerville won 5-2. Connor Matlock picked up the win on the mound. Josh Nabozny had 2 hits and Alex Montrose had 2 RBI’s. On Tuesday night the varsity baseball team lost both games against Mason. In game one, Josh Nabozny was 1 for 3. In game two, Eric Fritz had an RBI double while Clay Boak and Adam Jolliff each had a hit for the Gladiators. Their record is now 2-2 heading into spring break. *** JV BASEBALL On Monday night, March 30, the Fowlerville JV Baseball Team split with Linden. They came out in the ¿rst game and played hard with Bryant Martin contributing a hit and Steven Quigley turning in a solid pitching performance. The JVs lost 11-1. In the second game, the team took that loss as motivation and went out with a purpose. Nate Leonard pitched an outstanding game, shutting out Linden until late in the game when they ¿nally scored a run. He had 5 strikeouts. Cameron Brigham came up with a big two-out hit with bases loaded to give Fowlerville the lead 4-1 and that’s where it would stay. On Tuesday night, the JVs played Mason. Jason Klebba started on the mound, pitching great and only allowing 3 runs and getting batters to Ày out 9 times. Fowlerville had the lead with help from Dillon Ochs recording a 2 RBI single. The game was tied entering the bottom of the 7th with runners on 1st and third and two outs Steven Quigley was called upon to pinch hit and, with two strikes, delivered the game winning hit. The ¿nal score was 7-6. Game two was dominated on the mound by Calvin Teft who didn’t allow a run and struck out 9 batters. Nick Semke and Bryce Bertl scored the only 2 runs for Fowlerville and that was enough to secure a win. *** JV SOFTBALL The Fowlerville JV Girls Softball Team lost their season opener last week in two tough battles with Linden. Valerie Winn was on the mound the ¿rst game, striking out 5 Linden batters and only walking 4. Kaylee Moulton and Erica Fox split the second game, allowing only 5 hits. Kaylee Moulton also led the team offensively, getting on base 6 out of 7 times with 5 singles and a double. *** GIRL’S SOCCER The Fowlerville Varsity Girls Soccer Team defeated Lansing Eastern last Wednesday, 5-0. Scoring for the Glads were Heidi Siemon, Lauren Robertson, Rayne Phillips and Rachel Clark who had two goals. Ollie Updike provided two beautiful assists. Erin Veilbig earned her ¿rst shutout of the year.

Governing By Crisis Isn’t Governing At All Column by Lee H. Hamilton After Congress came a hair’s breadth from shutting down the Department of Homeland Security a few weeks ago, members of the leadership tried to reassure the American people. “We’re certainly not going to shut down the government or default on the national debt,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declared on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” Congress, he said, would not lurch from crisis to crisis. I wish I could be so con¿dent. Because if you look at the year ahead, the congressional calendar is littered with opportunities to do just that. Next month, unless Congress acts, doctors will see a steep cut in Medicare reimbursements. In May, the Highway Trust Fund runs out of money, meaning that infrastructure projects all across the country could grind to a halt. The following month, the federal Export-Import Bank’s charter runs out. By the end of summer, Congress will need to raise the debt ceiling. Then it will have to ¿nd a way of funding the government for next year, deal with across-the-board spending cuts that are scheduled to take hold, and make it possible for the Treasury to continue to borrow money. I don’t know about you, but my bet is not on smooth sailing. This is a huge problem. Great democracies do not veer from one doomsday moment to the next, nor do they fund government on a week-to-week basis. World superpowers do not risk their creditworthiness or threaten to strangle their own agencies or force them to plan repeatedly for shutdowns. Yet that is precisely the habit Congress has developed. It’s embarrassing. Why? Look at what happened with Homeland Security. The issue, essentially, was that members, unhappy with President Obama’s plan to shield undocumented immigrants from deportation, tried to use the DHS funding measure to force him to back down. In other words, they tied two unrelated issues together. The solution ultimately lay in separating them, allowing a vote on each. But during the weeks Congress spent arriving at this commonsense approach, DHS had to get ready for roughly 30,000 employees to be furloughed, arrange to wind down administrative support functions, prepare law enforcement across the country for the loss of training funds, and ask crucial employees to be willing to work without pay — we’re

talking the border patrol, Coast Guard, screeners at airports, cargo inspectors...the people on the front lines. The impasse threatened ongoing research and planning on making the country safer and grants to local communities to pay salaries for emergency personnel. At the very point when terrorism overseas was consuming the attention of our national security agencies, the department charged with protecting the nation at home had to be consumed with shuttering its operations. Small wonder that much of the world thinks the United States is incapable of governing itself. I know that the politics of Capitol Hill are dif¿cult right now. But they’ve been troublesome for years, and legislating is about getting things done in a dif¿cult environment. Congress is designed to be an institution where the dilemmas of the moment can be overcome by skillful legislators. We need a Congress that can address its problems before a crisis comes up. What will it take to do so? Part of the answer lies in dedication to Congress’s job. Its members need to work at legislating every day — not just the three days in the middle of the week. Its leaders need to make clear their determination to move legislation through in an orderly fashion. The socalled “Hastert Rule” — that the Speaker of the House will not allow a vote on a bill unless he has a majority of his own party behind it — needs to be jettisoned for good, not just in extreme circumstances. Allowing a majority of the House and the Senate to work its will, whatever the partisan alignment, would do wonders. And perhaps most important, the tactic of tying two unrelated issues together in order to force an opponent’s hand needs to be rejected. The parade of make-or-break issues that Congress faces this year presents myriad opportunities for legislative mischief. If all we see before us is one governmentshutdown threat after another, the remaining faith Americans hold in our chief lawmaking body could disappear altogether. And deservedly so. Lee Hamilton is Director of the Center on Congress at Indiana University. He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 34 years. Senior Spotlight-- Travis Elowsky By Chelsea Stanley Travis Dale Elowsky will be graduating in the spring of 2015 from Webberville High School. He is the son of Mike and LaVerna Elowsky; the brother to Junior Alex Elowsky and Damon Elowsky who graduated from Fowlerville High School. With a bright future ahead, Elowsky looks forward to life after high school. Elowsky has been involved in many athletics throughout his time at Webberville. He has participated in basketball for three years, football for three years, and baseball for three years. “Travis made my Âżrst two years at Webberville as a head coach easier because he was a student of the game,â€? said head football coach, Joel Emmons. “Having a quarterback that is prepared and thinking the same as you made life a lot easier.â€? After graduating high school, Elowsky plans on going to Baker College to be a diesel mechanic. His dedication to everything that he does will improve his future greatly. “My advice to underclassmen is to work hard during high school, your grades have a big impact on your future and you only get one chance to get it right; but most of all stay golden,â€? said Elowsky. Although he is looking forward to graduating, he will always have the memories he has made throughout high school. Elowsky is looking forward to the remainder of this school year, but after graduation he is going to miss all of his friends. “Travis is very generous. He will always be there for anyone if they ask him to be,â€? said fellow senior, Jared Eberly. “Whatever you need he will help you with it.â€?

Webberville Community Schools seeking renewal of non-homestead taxes Webberville Community Schools will have an operating millage renewal request on the ballot during the special election on Tuesday, May 5, 2015. District voters should look for the operating millage renewal request at the bottom of the special election ballot. This request will renew the millage that has been in place over the last 10 years. This millage is levied on non-homestead property, so it is not assessed on homes of community members who use their homestead exemption. The schools are requesting a renewal of the existing millage to continue the 20 mills for the operational budget over the next ten years. The district will actually only collect 18 mills, but will have 2 additional mills approved so that the funding will not dip below the 18 mill level due to the “Headleeâ€? amendment. The funding generated by this renewal is vital to serving students through stafÂżng and school district programming. The important thing to know is that this is not an increase in the existing tax level, but a request for renewal. The ballot language is listed below, if you have any questions please contact Brian Friddle at 517-521-3422 extension 101. OSHUDWLQJ 0LOODJH 5HQHZDO 3URSRVDO Shall the currently authorized millage rate limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in the Webberville Community Schools, Ingham and Livingston Counties, Michigan, be renewed by 20 mills ($20.00 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for a period of 10 years, 2016 to 2025, inclusive, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and 18 mills are levied in 2016 is approximately $601,701 (this is a renewal of millage which will expire with the 2015 tax levy)?

%\ 3HJ 0DZE\ +HDG /LEUDULDQ Every March schools and libraries put a great emphasis on reading. We plan events and activities meant to show our kids the fun of reading. Why? Because March is Reading Month! So now that March is just about over, we can get back to normal, right? Wait, why can’t every month be like March? No, not the weather, the reading! Let’s keep going with those activities that made reading fun. I don’t see any reason to stop. One of the best things you can do for you and your child is to have books and magazines around the house. When I was growing up, there wasn’t a room in our house that didn’t have some type of reading material. Most of the books we owned were from garage sales or gifts. One very special aunt gave us a stack of books every Christmas. Reading is reading. It really doesn’t matter if your child is reading a classic or a sports magazine. He’s learning and retaining new vocabulary. If you try and dictate what kids are reading, there is a good chance you will kill the fun for them. Be open to letting kids make their own choices. Avoid making rules about how many pages or how many books they have to read. They will read more. Make visiting the library a regular and special event. It doesn’t take much to make something special for a kid. You don’t need to conjoin the library visit with a trip to the toy store or fast-food joint. The fact that you are picking out books together makes the trip special. Try picking out a book that you remember enjoying when you were young. Maybe it is still too hard for your child to read alone, but you will be sharing something special when you read it out loud together. Capital Area District Libraries’ Webberville branch is located at 115 S. Main Street in Webberville. For information about our hours, services or events, call 517-521-3643 or visit cadl.org.

By Joe Hune, 22nd District Fowlerville offers many great attractions and events for community members and visitors, but one of my favorites is the Farmers’ Market. Opening day for the 2015 market season is right around the corner, on Friday, May 15. The market is located in the Fowlerville Downtown Development Authority’s parking lot entrance, along Ann Street and Grand River Avenue, and will be open each Friday from 3-7 p.m. through Oct. 9. The mission of the market is to offer a welcoming and fair place for local farmers, bakers, artists and crafters to vend their products. It provides a family-friendly environment where residents and visitors can access wholesome, gardenfresh foods, baked goods and artisan-made items. “The community’s support has been outstanding, and continues to grow a healthy market with strong local roots,â€? said Nadia Freeman, the market director. “All patronage is greatly appreciated. The Library of Michigan Foundation announces keynote speaker The Library of Michigan Foundation is pleased to announce that 2014 Michigan Notable Book Award winner, Linda Hundt (Sweetie-licious Pies: Eat Pies, Love Life), will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2015 Night for Notables event scheduled for Saturday, April 25 at the Library of Michigan. This annual event honors the twenty 2015 Michigan Notable Books and their authors. The evening will include an award ceremony, featuring remarks by Ms. Hundt, followed by a gala evening of notable author book signings, interaction with the authors, and a ¿ne selection of hors d’ oeuvres, desserts and Michigan beverages. Past keynote speakers have included: New York Times best selling novelist Doug Stanton; nationally renowned author Judith Guest; National Book Award winner Kevin Boyle; Academy Award winning ¿lmmaker and bestselling author Michael Moore; and Steve Hamilton, nationally acclaimed author of the Alex McKnight mystery series and the winner of the Edgar and Shamus Awards – all former Michigan Notable Authors. The annual Michigan Notable Books Program highlights 20 of the previous year’s most engaging books that are set in Michigan or the Great Lakes region, have a Michigan theme or are written by a Michigan native or resident. The Library of Michigan coordinates a statewide committee of librarians, booksellers, reviewers, historians, writers and editors to review hundreds of titles each year and selects 20 quality titles that best capture Michigan’s diverse heritage and have wide public appeal. For additional information on the 2015 Program, please visit: www.michigan.gov/notablebooks. “We are so pleased that Linda Hundt will join us in honoring the 2015 Michigan Notable Book authors for their outstanding contributions to our state’s rich literary tradition” said Carolyn Sparks, Executive Director of the Library of Michigan Foundation. “Linda has a large and enthusiastic following, who will welcome this special opportunity to see her in person and hear her inspirational story.” Ever since she got her ¿rst turquoise Easy Bake Oven, Linda Hundt has known that baking delicious memories for others was her mission in life. Now a nineteen-time national pie-baking champion and retro-inspired bakery owner, she has been featured on the Food Network, the Steve Harvey Show and other television programs, as well as in newspapers and magazines throughout the country. Sweetie-licious is the exclusive pie provider for WilliamsSonoma, Inc, and her pies are available nationwide through the Williams-Sonoma website and catalog. She currently owns three shops in Michigan and in November Sweetielicious was named the #1 Best Pie in Michigan by MLive papers. Linda, who resides in a century-old farmhouse with her husband and has two lovely grown daughters, is a soughtafter keynote speaker who focuses on entrepreneurism, inspiration and pie baking. (3) If a child residing in the school district is not 5 years of age on the enrollment eligibility date speci¿ed in subsection (2), but will be 5 years of age not later than December 1 of a school year, the parent or legal guardian of that child may enroll the child in kindergarten for that school year if the parent or legal guardian noti¿es the school district in writing not later than June 1 before the beginning of the school year that he or she intends to enroll the child in kindergarten. )RZOHUYLOOH VKRS GRQDWLQJ SUR¿WV IRU special tattoos to Boxing Autism Club Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects 1 in 68 children in the United States, according to CDC statistics. This ¿gure is a 30 percent jump in only two years and is the latest available numbers since early 2014. Boxing Autism Club of Livingston County is an organization devoted to supporting those affected by ASD in Livingston County and their caregivers. The non-pro¿t organization is involved in policy advocacy and enhancing educational resources. Additionally, the local organization offers group meeting to help support autistic individuals and the community members whose lives they touch. One of the awesome ways that Boxing Autism Club of Livingston County is supporting the community is through the organization’s “Buddy benches” program. This simple, but inexplicably important idea was designed to ¿x the problem of playground loneliness that many children, especially children with ASD deal with each school day. A child who feels lonely during recess sits on the bench as a simple, non-verbal way to communicate their desire to play with someone and their feeling of loneliness. Other children are made aware of the purpose of the buddy bench, so when they see a child sitting on the bench, they know that that person wants someone to play with. At The Shop, a licensed tattooing facility in downtown Fowlerville, we have a vested interest in seeing enhanced support for the ASD community. It is undeniably, very close to our hearts. Because of this, artists at The Shop will be holding an Ink4Autism fundraising event with proceeds to be donated to The Boxing Autism Club of Livingston County. The event will take place for the entire month of April. The artists have drawn up a variety of tattoo designs that follow the theme of the event. For the entire month of April, any time someone chooses one of these designs, which will be at special prices, all pro¿ts made off of that tattoo will be donated to Boxing Autism Club of Livingston County. Tattoo designs are available for viewing in the lobby and on The Shop’s Facebook page. As talk progressed last month, others in the community have joined us. Included in the festivities, a trike worth $1500 was donated on behalf of the Boxing Autism Club of Livingston County and will be awarded to one random child with autism from Livingston County. Please check out all facets of the event.
