Heroin use & other opiate addiction topic of community forum on April 14
“Project Opiate: Wake Up to Heroin,” a community forum designed to discuss and inform the public on heroin use in the community, is being held this Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Fowlerville United Brethren Church. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The church is located at 9300 W. Grand River. The program, sponsored by the Fowlerville Police Dept., is aimed at addressing the “ongoing problem of opiates, especially heroin” in Fowlerville as well as the rest of the county. “It’s no secret that Livingston County has a heroin problem,” said police officials. “We are losing our young people to this awful drug. What most people don’t understand is that heroin does not discriminate. It is not a drug that only ‘bad’ kids use. It is a drug that tears at the fabric of our society and leaves people devastated who have lost a love one.” The forum will include speakers from the DEA, Livingston County Probation, local law enforcement, and people whose lives have been impacted by opiate addiction.

Fowlerville wrestler finishes second in recent NCAA Championships
Fowlerville graduate Adam Coon finished second in the 2015 NCAA Championships, held on March 19-21, to wrap up a successful season. The sophomore heavyweight, who wrestles for the University of Michigan, was one of five Wolverines securing AllAmerica status in the tournament. He lost in the finals to the defending champion, Nick Gwiazdowski of North Carolina State, in a 7-6 tugof-war that required a final escape point by Gwiazdowski with about 17 seconds left to earn the win. Coon had been one of only two wrestlers to defeat the NCS athlete a loss in his college career, beating him in overtime last season. Coon advanced to his first NCAA final after winning a wild overtime scramble to defeat Northwestern’s second-seeded Mike McMullan, 3-1, Adam Coon earned All-American status at the NCAA Tournament in the semifinal round. After the wrestlers traded little more than escapes in regulation, McMullan shot in on Coon, seeded sixth to start the tournament, claimed a close 2-1 a low single leg to force the scramble midway through the extra decision over Maryland’s Spencer Myers in the quarterfinal frame. Both wrestlers appeared to have the upper hand more than round to secure his first NCAA All-America citation. Coon earned a quick escape in the second period and rode for 1:32 time once, but it was Coon that came out on top, spinning around to advantage in the third. earn the takedown with just one second remaining.
Former DPW supervisor remembered as a hard worker with common sense
By Steve Horton Former Fowlerville Dept. of Public Works Supervisor Ron Hanna was remembered as a “hard worker with good common sense.” Hanna died on April 4 at age 71. “Ron used to say he wished people paid more attention to what was underground, referring to the water and sewer lines, than just what was above ground,” said Marjorie Carlon, who served on the Village Council during Hanna’s tenure with the DPW. “He was always pushing for improvements to our infrastructure.
“Ron never adhered to a time clock,” she added. “If the work was not finished, he would stay until it was done. Or if something else came up, he’d stay on. He was a hard worker with common sense. Ron really cared about the people and the village. And he had a great sense of humor. He was just a great person to work with.” Muriel ‘Jean’ Bohn, who the village clerk for much of the time that Hanna worked for the DPW, described Hanna “as small and mighty.” “No job was too big or too dirty for him,” she said. “A title didn’t mean anything to him. He believed in comradery, where everyone (including the boss) Continued Page 4.

worked together. “He would help around the office, along with doing his DPW work,” Bohm added. “For instance, he built a podium type stand to set the big books on and made stands to put our copy on for typing, so we could see it better. He hosted Christmas parties at the DPW building. He liked to cook and often made sloppy joes and baked beans. Ron always did nice things for people. And he was a hard worker.” Hanna grew up in Fowlerville, graduating from high school in 1961. He married Linda Hull in 1964; she survives him. Hanna began working for the village in 1968. Earlier work included jobs with Klein’s Fertilizers and Sherwood Construction. He became the supervisor in 1975, replacing Grant DeForest who had been elevated to the position of village manager. He served in that capacity until 1985 when he left and went to work for Copeland Construction. He returned to the DPW in 1989 as an employee. When Howard Dorrance, who held the dual positions of village manager and DPW supervisor, retired in 1992, Hanna was named by council as the new supervisor. He remained in that

Ron Hanna, shown in this 1985 photo at the Village of Fowlerville DPW Building position until his retirement in 2001. For a few months during his second stint as the supervisor, when the village was in between fulltime managers, he and Bohm served as interim co-managers. Hanna was elected to the Village Council shortly after his retirement and served for one term. Hanna was also a member of the Fowlerville Fire Department for the first four years he worked for the village and later served for several years on the Fowlerville 4th of July Committee. In 1998, in recognition for his long service both to the village and the committee, he and Linda were selected as Grand Marshals of the 4th of July Parade. In an interview on that occasion, Hanna said that, as the DPW supervisor, his job included being the cemetery sexton, water commissioner, street administrator, overseeing the waste treatment plant, along with overseeing the activities of the employees. The responsibilities of the DPW, he noted, include snow removal, sidewalk repairs, tree maintenance, trimming trees, removing autumn leaves and summer yard debris, helping maintain the parks, cleaning the storm drain basins, and operating the water and sewer systems. “I just enjoy the work,” Ron said of his career with the village. “The people I work with and the public. Occasionally the public gets on your neck, but that’s part of the job.” Commenting on Hanna’s selection as the parade grand marshal, the then village manager John Hyden, said, “There are so many things Ron does above and beyond the call of duty for our village; things he automatically does at night or on weekends if a need arises or an emergency occurs.” Hyden added that Ron, with his now long tenure with the village, offers an invaluable institutional knowledge of operations and background.

Michigan House Report By Dr. Hank Vaupel 47nd District
Upon my election to the state House, I said that I was not afraid of the controversial issues. That statement rings true today as does my commitment to being accountable to those who put me in office. Over the past few weeks I have addressed some of the more controversial issues that are coming up in the legislature. I want to make sure you have information on these topics. I hope you find this background information helpful and I look forward to continuing this level of transparency on future issues. As always I continue all constituents to contact my office with any questions. We live in a country that was founded to recognize and protect religious freedom. Indeed, the free exercise of one’s religion is the very first right enumerated in our Bill of Rights. Religious liberty, tolerance and respect for different viewpoints are fundamental values that are entitled to heightened protections. Recent uproar about such protections in Indiana has raised questions regarding legislation of the same name that has been introduced in the Michigan Senate. Unlike Indiana’s law, however, the Michigan Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) mirrors the federal RFRA that unanimously passed a Democrat-led Congress before being signed into law by then-President Bill Clinton in 1993. That federal legislation enjoyed broad support from groups like the ACLU, the Jewish Congress and the Catholic Church. The legislation now in the Michigan Senate simply seeks to extend the federal RFRA’s protections to the state and local level, which is necessary after a Supreme Court decision left the federal law inapplicable against state and local governments. The Indiana RFRA legislation, in contrast, goes far beyond the scope of the Michigan and federal RFRAs, as it also applies against non-governmental actions. Under both the federal RFRA and the Michigan version, three criteria must be met: 1) Has the person’s freedom to exercise his or her religion been substantially burdened by government? 2) Does the government have a compelling reason to impose that burden, such as for public health and safety? 3) Is there a reasonable alternative available to serve that compelling interest? An illustrative example is the case of Arnold Abbott, a 90-year-old Florida minister who was arrested for feeding the homeless in public, in violation of a city ordinance forbidding such. Because Florida has a RFRA, a court ruled that this improperly infringed upon Mr. Abbott’s religious freedom rights. The court weighed the city’s interest in addressing homelessness against the minister’s desire to feed the homeless according to the dictates of his faith to hold that the ordinance, which in part would have required the minister to provide restroom facilities that he could not afford, was unnecessarily burdensome. Without RFRA, he would be out of luck. This is what the Senate’s proposed legislation seeks to address. It would allow Michigan to join the 27 other states that already have this type of law in place. Through a federal law called RLUIPA, inmates in Michigan prisons already enjoy these same protections. A state RFRA would simply extend to Michigan’s citizens the same protections currently afforded to its inmates. To be clear, this is not a solution in search of a problem.
NOTICE TO HANDY TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS RENEWAL OF ROAD MILLAGE BALLOT PROPOSAL AT THE SPECIAL ELECTION TO BE HELD ON TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2015
A ballot proposal for the 1 mill renewal of the Road Millage for the Township of Handy to provide for the improvement, maintenance and dust control of public roads in Handy Township outside the Village of Fowlerville limits. The renewal will be for a period of four years. VOTING PRECINCT LOCATIONS: Precincts 1, 2, & 3 will all vote at Woodshire Place Banquet Facility, 6520 W. Grand River, Handy Township (Located on the corner of W. Grand River and Hogback Road) (3-29, 4-5, 4-12, 4-19, 4-26, 5-3-2015)
Michigan residents have had their religious liberties threatened because of the absence of these protections. In Clinton County, Jewish parents objected on religious grounds to an autopsy performed on their son, who died in a high-speed car crash. Despite the cause of death being unquestionable, the County Medical Examiner ignored the wishes of the boy’s mother and ordered an autopsy under state law. Similarly, a Christian student in Western Michigan faced legal sanction for posting an advertisement for a female roommate who shared her Christian beliefs. RFRA would have offered legal protection in both of these cases. This legislation is still in its early stages. If and when it comes to the House, I look forward to discussing the issue with my constituents and colleagues to provide Michigan residents with the protections they are entitled to in this country.

2015 Fishing Update
Michigan is home to 3,000 miles of Great Lakes coastline, has more than 35,000 inland lakes and ponds, and more than 49,000 miles of rivers and streams. With an abundance of fresh water habitat, fishing is one of our state’s top recreational activities and a key part of our economy. Recently, on April 1, the state Department of Natural Resources began its new fishing license season and regulation cycle, and there are a few notable changes that anglers should be aware of. This year there are five fishing license options to choose from: --Resident Annual - $26 --Non-Resident Annual - $68 --Senior Annual (for residents age 65 or older) - $11 --24-Hour (resident or non-resident) - $10 --72-Hour (resident or non-resident) - $30 The DNR also offers residents and non-residents a Hunt/ Fish combo license for $76 and $266, respectively, which includes a base license, annual fishing license and two deer tags. Lastly, there is a Hunt/Fish combo license available to senior residents for $43. As always, anglers may buy fishing licenses at traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, or you can purchase at your convenience on your phone, tablet or computer via the DNR’s E-License system at mdnr-elicense.com. Whether it’s a small inland stream or on a big lake, from easy-to-catch pan fish to mighty musky and everything in between, Michigan offers a great fishing experience. Before you load up the boat, I encourage you to check out the DNR’s new 2015 Michigan Fishing Guide, which thoroughly covers the rules, regulations, license information, and all relevant information about fishing in our state. For everything else not covered in the guide, visit Michigan.gov/fishing. As always, please feel free to email my office at SenJHune@ senate.michigan.gov or dial toll-free at 855-JOE-HUNE and my staff will be happy to assist you.

The research centered on men from Companies A, C, and F, the regimental staff, and the color guard. Their information was collected from military records, pension files, and genealogical internet sites. The primary purpose of the research was to compose personal letters “from” the soldiers to modern day re-enactors who participated in the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg as the 24th Michigan Infantry Regiment. Mr. May has taught secondary social sciences for over 25 years. He is a graduate of Oakland University where he earned his B.A. in secondary education and his M.A. in history. To promote reading during “March is Reading Month,” Mrs. Frechette, a preschool teacher at the Little Glad Center, has challenged her students to read at least 20 books at home with their families. Each time the children read a book at home, a book note was brought back to school and displayed in the hallway outside the Panda Room. Children were awarded with books, pencils, and stickers for reading throughout the month of March. Many guest readers, including Mr. Roedel, Mr. Dowker, and Ms. Kara Wieas, came in to read to the class. Mariam Mangan, (a.k.a. Amelia’s mom) and Tanya Dillingham, (a.k.a. Kenley’s mom) also brought in favorite books to read to the preschoolers. Mrs. Frechette believes that when children are given an opportunity to explore books at an early age they will develop a love for reading which will help them be successful in school as they grow older.

(3) If a child residing in the school district is not 5 years of age on the enrollment eligibility date specified in subsection (2), but will be 5 years of age not later than December 1 of a school year, the parent or legal guardian of that child may enroll the child in kindergarten for that school year if the parent or legal guardian notifies the school district in writing not later than June 1 before the beginning of the school year that he or she intends to enroll the child in kindergarten. A school district that receives this written notification may make a recommendation to the parent or legal guardian of a child described in this subsection that the child is not ready to enroll in kindergarten due to the child’s age or other factors. However, regardless of this recommendation, the parent or legal guardian retains the sole discretion to determine whether or not to enroll the child in kindergarten under this subsection. *** Michigan State University is hosting their Annual Science Festival, April 15 – 19th! By Haylee Terrasi-Klempner & Kellie Merchant Michael-Joseph Lawrence Gleason is the son of Michael and Deb Gleason and brother of Micole, Mandilynn, and Michael Gleason, II. He has attended Webberville since first grade. Gleason’s favorite classes at Webberville have been his art classes. He loves the way that his art can express his creativity and imagination, as with art, you can take one piece of paper and draw a thousand thoughts. “Joe has always had a great interest in art,” said art teacher Dean Wilson. “We have worked together on a number of interesting and fun projects and his skills have increased over the years.” Gleason’s art interest doesn’t stop at the school doors. He takes it with him everywhere. He enjoys creating art of animals that look and act like humans. His artistic abilities also help him enjoy video games a little more than average. “His interest in art really shows when he talks about relating it to video games,” said Wilson. Gleason’s interest in art isn’t the only thing he has gained at Webberville. He has also learned the importance of responsibility. He believes that it is a very important attribute for every person to have. “I will use the skill of responsibility in the workplace and at college,” said Gleason. Gleason has been inspired by his art teacher to become a website and game designer. He plans to go to college at the Art Institute of Michigan. “I imagine Joe will do very well in the path he has chosen,” said Wilson. Even though Gleason is making his future plans he will miss Webberville. He will miss the lessons learned and the friends he made. “Thank you guys and gals for always being there for me when I needed help,” said Gleason. “Make sure to always do your best on your work and get it in on time. Good luck on your journey.”

Webberville Boosters host Denim & Diamonds
The Denim & Diamonds Mother-Son Dance was a very special evening for many cowboys and their special ladies. This Webbberville Elementary Booster-sponsored event was well attended, with more than 125 guests attending the shindig. Everyone enjoyed the music of DJs, Jane and Emily, who kept the tunes rolling and the boots a-scoot in’! Photographer, Mike Faucett, was on hand to capture the western flair of the boys and their dates. There were awesome door prizes, a hula hoop contest, and special gift bags were handed to each boy as they left the dance. Special thanks go out to our door prize donors: Howell Western Wear, Tractor Supply Company, The Sun Theater of Williamston, Shear Image Salon of Fowlerville, and the Historic Howell Theater. Thank you to Chelsea Curtis from WHS! She volunteered her time to come and lead us in some great dance moves. Thanks, also, to these volunteers for their help and support: Terri Johnson, Pam Fraley, Heather Derian, Michelle Szilagyi, Vikki Peterson, Jill Hull, Courtney Pierce, and Jane and Emily Sparkia. A BIG thanks to everyone who prepared and brought food for this dance – it was greatly appreciated!

watching movies and sports with her family. She says her family can have fun with almost anything they do. Dominique plans on attending Lansing Community College in the fall to become a radiologist. After she graduates, she said that she will miss all the great teachers that made school so enjoyable. Her advice to underclassmen is to get your work done early, instead of procrastinating. Her favorites include: The Interview (the movie), while her favorite artist is Ed Sheeran, and her favorite TV show is Impractical Jokers. She was honored to receive the award, stating, “It feels good to know the hard work I’m putting in my classes is paying off with this acknowledgement.” She is extremely excited for prom and graduation, with those two special event rounding out her senior year.

Join us at the Howell Opera House for An Afternoon with Emily St. John Mandel, Author of the 2015-16 Great Michigan Read Station Eleven. Sunday, April 26, 3:30- 4:00 pm Station Eleven is the story of the Traveling Symphony, a troupe of Shakespearean actors and orchestral musicians traveling the shores of the Great Lakes in a post-apocalyptic Michigan. Striving to maintain their humanity in the altered landscape of a world where 99% of the population has been wiped out by flu pandemic, the Traveling Symphony operates under one credo: “Survival is insufficient.” The questions raised in this novel will make you think about what it means to be human, why we fight for survival, and the human need to connect, to mark history and to create a future. Station Eleven was on the New York Times best-seller list for eight weeks, and was one of the best-reviewed books in 2014. The film and TV rights for the novel have been acquired by producer Scott Steindorff. Emily St John Mandel was born and raised on the west coast of British Columbia, Canada. Her fourth novel, Station Eleven, was a 2014 National Book Award Finalist. All four of her novels—Station Eleven, Last Night in Montreal, The Singer’s Gun, and The Lola Quartet—were Indie Next Picks, and The Singer’s Gun was the 2014 winner of the Prix Mystere de la Critique in France. Her short fiction and essays have been anthologized in numerous collections; including Best American Mystery Stories 2013. She is a staff writer for The Millions. She lives in New York City with her husband. Great Michigan Read is a biennial statewide literary program sponsored by the Michigan Humanities Council. The Great Michigan Read aims to connect us as Michiganians by deepening our understanding of our state, our society, and our humanity. A statewide panel of teachers, librarians, community leaders and book lovers select the Great Michigan Read every two years.

By Jamie Jabara Congratulations to Dominique Turner on being nominated to be this week’s honored student for displaying leadership, hard work, and dedication in and out of the classroom. She balances a demanding schedule her senior as she is taking Personal Relations, AP Calculus, Physics, College Prep English, Crucial Issues, and History through Film. Her family consists of her mother, Roxy; her father, Patrick; and brother, Kyler. Her favorite class here at FHS this year is Personal Relations because she has learned a lot about the healthy side of relationships. Her favorite teacher this year is Mr. Vanhorn because he is laid back, however, she added, that he makes sure things get done and his way of teaching is easy to understand. Her favorite thing about Fowlerville High is how nice the teachers are, stating that it is great to be able to get along with so many people. Dominique was nominated by many of her senior teachers. Mrs. Thomas commented, “Dominique is a really great individual, hard worker, good role model, and great representative of FHS in and out of the classroom.” Mrs. Hardenbrook stated, “Dom cares a great deal about her school work and puts forth tremendous effort in all she does. I have enjoyed watching her as a student from 7th grade, to 9th grade to now, as a senior. She is kind, caring, and a true example of a Gladiator.” Outside of school, Dominique enjoys playing softball and hanging out with friends and family. She enjoys talking and
