Crossroads United Methodist Church invites crafters to join Fall Show
By Cheryl Poch HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY A little history on the meaning and beginnings of Memorial Day...Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, was formerly known as Decoration Day and originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veteran’s Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who DIED while serving, while Veteran’s Day celebrates the service of ALL U.S. military veterans. Following is a poem entitled:
We Salute Our Veterans This Memorial Day This Memorial Day… We salute every soldier who has served this great nation. And offer a heart of thanks and appreciation! We salute each member of our armed forces. And are thankful for their efforts and resources!

My Road to Sobriety:
An Adventure in Wine Making By Pastor Tom Tarpley I don’t know of any teenager or preteen who wants to have his baby brother tagging along behind them when they are with their older friends. This is why my brother, who was almost 10, was always trying to slip away from me to play with his friends. The other reason he didn’t want me around was because I was a tattletale. Whenever I caught him doing something wrong, I would tell on him and get him into trouble. On one occasion I remember he got back at me. I stole some candy, and he saw me and ran home and told my grandmother. Needless to say she beat me so bad until, if it were today, she would have gone to jail for a long time. My childhood was not a good time for me, and the memories I have of that time are mostly sad‌ except for when I was able to get my hands on some alcohol. I didn’t like myself growing up, and no one else did either. I felt unwanted and alone most of the time. The only times I can recall that I enjoyed were those times when I was drinking. My grandfather used to make his own wine and beer and, now that I’m older, I know that the big container in the barn was a still for making moonshine. He also grew these funny looking plants behind the house. Every time he pulled them up, he made my brother stay in the back yard and watch them so no one would bother them. I realize now that the plants were marijuana. One day my brother, who was very clever, came to me and told me that he was going to make some wine. He had watched my grandfather do it, so he was going to try. He had gathered some corncobs, a ¿ve-gallon lard bucket ,and swiped a lot of sugar from the kitchen. He ¿lled the bucket about half full, and I helped him carry it up into the hills behind the house to our little hideout that he had built out of old lumber and whatever else he could ¿nd. I watched him dump the corn cobs into the bucket and mix the sugar in with it. He put something else in it, but he wouldn’t tell me what it was. He then covered it with a piece of cloth to keep out the insects. If I knew then what I know now I would have told on him. By doing so, maybe I would have saved myself a lot of misery. But I kept silent. I wanted to try some when it was ready. One day he came to me and told me it was ready, and he was going to try it. The only thing I really remember is that it was real sweet and, after sitting up there in the hideout trying to act like grownup, I got very sick. My brother was scared to death because if my grandmother found out she would give him a whipping that he would never forget. So he had to keep me away from the house until I was able to walk. While we were waiting, I emptied my insides out several times. That was not the ¿rst time I drank, but it was the ¿rst time I got drunk. Anyone with any common sense would have never touched it again, but I could not wait for the next day so I could sneak off without my brother and repeat the day before. Over the next few days I think I must have drank most of it because my brother yelled at me one day when he went to get some and it was all gone. The uncontrollable desire to drink was in me, and the addiction would last for almost 45 years. Next Week: Escape from Kentucky.

Where to plant trees on North Maple Street discussed at council meeting By Steve Horton :here to Slant new trees on 1orth MaSle 6treet was discussed at last Monday’s )owlerville 9illage &ouncil 6everal residents want them located on the village-owned right-of-way between the sidewalk and street 7he sewer lines are located under the west right-of-way (or green belt), the water line is located under the east right-of-way, and the storm drain is under the west curb 7he 9illage manager, .athryn $rledge, in her reSort indicated that the arborist, the D3:, and the 9illage engineer recommended that the trees be Slaced, with owner Sermission, in the residential yards rather than above these lines 6he said that she suSSorts that recommendation and gave the following written overview to council members “Discussion of the North Maple Street Construction Project. 6ummary 7his all started with a resident on MaSle 6treet, not wanting a tree Slanted in his yard he wants it on the 9illage SroSerty right of way 7he resident has gone to the neighbors, called several council trustees, Sast trustees, and 6enator -oe +une’s ofÂżce 7he new utilities for the MaSle 6treet &onstruction 3roject are in the 9illage right of way It is a known fact that trees are not to be Slanted over the utilities 7he 9illage &ouncil has offered to reSlace the 9illage tree that was on 9illage SroSerty, buy and Slant the tree in the resident’s yard 7his is a very gracious gesture from the 9illage &ouncil “My Slan is to meet with the residents, review the list of trees (includes choice of four maSle trees) with descriStion and Sictures, have the resident indicate on a drawing where they would like the tree Slanted, and sign an agreement “If the trees were to be Slanted in the right of way, it will comSromise the integrity of the infrastructure and would be Âżnancially irresSonsible, now and in the future, for me to recommend it In my oSinion, a MuniciSal 6treet right of way is no different then 6tate, &ounty and D7( right of ways “I will suSSort and follow the consideration and direction from the 9illage &ouncil “5emoval and 5eSlanting of 7rees $t the beginning of the construction Sroject on 1orth MaSle 6treet the 9illage &ouncil made a motion to hire a &ertiÂżed $rborist to e[amine the trees in the construction ]one, save the trees that could be saved and determine the ones that needed to be removed 7he &ertiÂżed $rborist has a formula to deÂżne the root ]one of the trees, it was determined that several trees needed to be removed “$t the last 9illage &ouncil Meeting a motion was made to have administration work with the &ertiÂżed $rborist to determine what kind of tree was recommended to be Slanted and the Slacement “On Monday, May , 0 I met with -eremy +ert], the &ertiÂżed $rborist, Matt %rinkoetter of :olverine (ngineers and an emSloyee with the 9illage of )owlerville D3: at the construction Sroject on 1orth MaSle 6treet “7he $rborist suSSlied a list of trees that was suggested to be Slanted 7he Âżrst thought was to mark out the area for Slanting in the recommended sSot in the resident’s yard It was determined that if the trees are going in the residents yard, they should have a say where they choose to have the tree Slanted as long as it met the reTuirements of where the tree would grow according to the 8nited 6tates DeSartment of $griculture )orest 6ervice 7ree Owner’s Manual --Do not Slant your tree where it will interfere with buildings, overhead utility lines, Savement or intersection sightlines as it gets bigger “$ couSle residents from MaSle 6treet came in the 9illage ofÂżce on 7hursday, May , 0 to inTuire on when the MaSle trees were going to be Sut back in the same Slace they
came from “It was and is my understanding that the 9illage of )owlerville does not want to comSromise the integrity of the infrastructure by Slanting the trees in the right-of-way (greenbelt) It was decided that the 9illage of )owlerville would Surchase and Slant trees in the residents yard, not over the new utilities that were just installed for reasons of the tree roots damaging the sidewalk, driveway, road or the utilities that were just installed I informed the two residents of this and they indicated that this is not what they were told )rom all of my investigations, the Sre-construction meeting and the 9illage &ouncil Meeting Minutes, it does not indicate that the trees would or would not be Slanted in the greenbelt It just indicates at the $rborist’s recommendation “7here is a reason why the Srofessionals are advising the 9illage not to allow trees in the right-of-way â€? $lso in $rledge’s reSort to council was information on the MaSle 6treet utilities 6he noted that the storm sewer runs under the west curb line from the &ounty Drain to *rand 5iver $venue 7here is aSSro[imately 6 feet between the toS of the SiSe and the curb green belt above it 7he water main was installed in the green belt on the east side of the road from the north end of the street to *rand 5iver $venue 7he water main is feet deeS 7he coSSer water service for each house is feet deeS in the green belt 7he sanitary services are around feet deeS at the SroSerty line give or take a foot Four residents who reside on the street²$udrey *lass, 6teve +udson, and /ee and Dorothy +anna²sSoke during the &all to the 3ublic at the start of the meeting *lass, in her comments, noted that there was nine feet of green sSace between the street and sidewalk comSared to seven and eight foot striSs on *rand 5iver where numerous trees are located “7hese,â€? she noted, “are all growing and thriving â€? 6he also stated that the root system should not interfere with the water and sewer lines since they have more shallow root systems that sSread out rather than Senetrating the deSths where the lines are located *lass also stated that locating the trees in residential yards would “take uS the entire yard and Sut them too close to the house â€? &athy (lliott also sSoke, noting that tree roots do get into the sewer lines “$t the &entennial 3ark we had what’s called a beard (where several roots combine into a single large root) get into the manhole,â€? she said “It was eight foot long and several inches in diameter :e had to cut it out of the manhole with a chainsaw 6o roots do get into the sewer lines â€? 7he issue of the MaSle 6treet trees was on the agenda as a matter of discussion 7hree trustees²(verett De*rush, &arol +ill, and -erry %ell²sSoke in favor of Slanting the trees in these green striSs, noting that they felt that this had been the agreement with the residents last year when the e[isting trees had to be removed due to the street construction 7hat Sroject involved reSlacing e[isting water and sewer lines and storm drains with new infrastructure, installing new sidewalks and curb and gutter, and aSSlying two coast of asShalt (7he second, Âżnish coat was aSSlied last Monday ) &ouncil had agreed at that time to Surchase and install two new trees for every one that was removed During the discussion by council, questions were raised of whether or not the roots of the maSles trees would go deeS enough to damage the lines and whether a more detailed reSort from the arborist should be obtained It was also noted that in recent street Srojects, mainly on 6outh and 1orth

By Haylee Terrasi-Klempner Alyssa Jane Ciavarelli is the daughter of KJ and David Woodworth and twin sister of Senior Alexandria Ciavarelli, Austin Woodworth (6) Addison Woodworth (4), and Evan Woodworth (4). She arrived at Webberville her junior year of high school. 8Son enrolling at Webberville, Ciavarelli has inÀuenced those she has met. She not only brings joy to those close to her but to everyone she sees. Ciavarelli always has a smile on her face and is determined to make everyone else’s day. ³She has a really kind heart,´ said cross ¿t instructor and friend, Jake Lyons. “She would do almost anything for you and she has a great personality to go along with it.” Ciavarelli enjoys experiencing new things. This allows her to dodge obstacles that are thrown into her path. She keeps a positive attitude through her day even when she is challenged. “Alyssa has overcome a lot of challenges,” said English teacher Mrs. Pape.” She has a positive attitude that can inspire others.” Ciavarelli enjoys all of her classes but her favorites are Consumers Math and English. Her English teacher, Mrs. Pape, has made a tremendous impact on her life. “Mrs. Pape helped me through so much,” said Ciavarelli. “Not only in school but in my life, she helped me to overcome things that I never thought I would be able too.” Even though Ciavarelli will miss not seeing her friends she is ready to leap into the world. She plans to go to college to get a degree in psychology or special education. She loves to work with people and both of these career paths will allow her to do so. “I want to leave the underclassmen with a quote from Babe Ruth,” Ciavarelli said. “Don’t let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.”

By Peg Mawby, Head Librarian Play is an essential part of learning. This isn’t a new theory—experts have proven over and over just how important play is in the development of children. It allows them to use their creativity, develop physical and cognitive dexterity, learn decision-making skills, and discover their own areas of interest. At Capital Area District Libraries, we have long recognized the relationship between play and learning. That’s why we include songs and games in our storytimes. We also offer drop-in LEGO Clubs, where free-style play reigns. Our afterschool club has been so popular at the Webberville branch that we have decided to offer it over the summer. Kids can drop in anytime from - p.m. on the Âżrst and third Thursdays during June, July and August. Dolls are another popular feature of playtime. Last year, a generous patron donated an American Girl doll to CADL. Like the books in our American Girl collection, ÂłJoseÂżna´ can be checked out for children to enjoy at home. 1ow a second doll has joined our collection. ÂłKit´ is currently available at the Webberville branch. She comes with a book about her, called Meet Kit, and a suitcase Âżlled with pajamas and robe, sweaters, hats, shoes, skirt, and a cool leopard print cape. I hope someone checks her out soon or I might be tempted to take her home myself. Long live play time! Capital Area District Libraries’ Webberville branch is located at 115 S. Main Street in Webberville. For information about our hours, services or events, call 517-521-3643 or visit cadl.org. All CADL branches will be closed over Memorial Day weekend—Saturday, May 23-Monday, May 25.

(3) If a child residing in the school district is not 5 years of age on the enrollment eligibility date speci¿ed in subsection (2), but will be 5 years of age not later than December 1 of a school year, the parent or legal guardian of that child may enroll the child in kindergarten for that school year if the parent or legal guardian noti¿es the school district in writing not later than June 1 before the beginning of the school year that he or she intends to enroll the child in kindergarten. A school district that receives this written noti¿cation may make a recommendation to the parent or legal guardian of a child described in this subsection that the child is not ready to enroll in kindergarten due to the child’s age or other factors. However, regardless of this recommendation, the parent or legal guardian retains the sole discretion to determine whether or not to enroll the child in kindergarten under this subsection.

Congratulations to this week’s Student of the Week, Tyler VanPatten! Tyler is a senior and has a schedule that consists of 12 grade English, Gym II, Advanced Auto, and Co-Op. Tyler likes Fowlerville High School because it is a small school and he said that there is nothing that he would change about the school or his experience here. Some advice that he has for underclassmen is to make sure you stay on track and not get behind in your classes. Outside of school, Tyler spends most of his time working and with his friends. As of right now, he is mostly looking forward to graduation and working over the summer. Tyler was nominated by his senior teachers. Mr. Ferguson commented, “Tyler always goes out of his way to do a superior job on any assigned repair in the Automotive Lab. He has even come in on his own time to work on a car in the shop that did not belong to him.” Mrs. Houtteman stated, “Tyler did also just receive an outstanding evaluation for his Q3 co-op eval. His bosses love him and say he is their hardest worker.” Congratulations once again Tyler, good luck as you enter the real world!
Webberville Community Schools offers summer meals to Tuali¿ed children For too many children, the end of the school year means an end to the free and reduced price meals they depend on throughout the year. But this summer, with many families struggling to put food on the table, Webberville Community Schools Food and Nutrition Summer Meal Program will help to ensure children do not have to worry about their next meal. The Program will provide regular, healthy meals and snacks for children who might not otherwise receive them. Summer Meal Programs must meet federal nutrition standards, ensuring that children continue to have access to the healthy, well balanced foods they receive throughout the year. ANYONE 18 years of age or under is eligible for free meals and snacks. Beyond ¿ghting hunger, summer nutrition programs support quality programming for young people by boosting attendance at summer enrichment activities and providing the nutrition children need to fuel their day. Children may go on summer vacation, but hunger doesn’t. Webberville Community Schools Summer Meal Program bridges the summer hunger gap and lets our children know that the community cares about their well-being all year long. Meals will be available as follows: Monday-Friday June 15th- August 21st (We will be closed the week of June 29July3). _____ Snack_________________________Lunch_______ Webberville Secondary School (HS/MS) 9:45AM -10:15AM 11:30AM -1:00PM Other sites are being considered. There is no limit, a day, a week or the whole summer. Please consider hosting a food service site if you have children that might be hungry in your area. Other areas that might be serviced include day camps (band or athletic), daycares, low income apartment complexes, parks or recreation areas, bible schools or any place that children may congregate. If you have any questions please call 517-521-3422 extension 350. Or email ccourter@webbervilleschools.org
