Happy Mother’s Day

to all you wonderful mothers out there! I would like to share with you a Mother’s Day poem by one of my mother’s favorite poets Edgar A. Guest. It is called:

MOTHER

Never a sigh for the cares that she bore for me, Never a thought of the joys that flew by; Her one regret that she couldn’t do more for me, Thoughtless and selfish, her Master was I. Oh, the long nights that she came at my call to me! Oh, the long years that she gave up her all to me! Oh, how I yearn for her gentleness now! Slave to her baby! Yes, that was the way of her, Counting her greatest of services small; Words cannot tell what this old heart would say of her, Mother-the sweetest and fairest of all. *** My mother passed away several years ago but there isn’t a day that goes by when I do not think of her –this poem by Edgar A. Guest sums it up. It is called:

A Mother Finds Rest

And now she dwells where neither doubt or fear May find her breast; No crying child may now disturb her here Or break her rest. Ended the ache of living. Here she lies in wondrous peace. God left a smile about her lovely eyes with her release. How oft we fretted her or caused her pain, We cannot say. Long hours she watched beside the window pane With us away. But now we suffer so, and vainly call For her to come. Her feet will never tread again the hall, Her lips are dumb. Love had no more sweet service to provide, But this we know, She’ll watch for us upon the other side, Who tried her so.

The Fowlerville JV Girls Soccer Team recently won 3 and lost one. On Wednesday, April 22, the Glads won their fourth game in a row, a 2-0 victory over Eaton Rapids. Jacie Devota tallied both of the goals, on assists from Selena Lopez and Madison Lemieux. The defense played well, led by Katrina Tersigni’s 14 saves and 4th shutout in a row. On Tuesday, April 28, the girls defeated Corunna by a score of 8-0. Jacie Devota had a hat trick, Selena Lopez added two goals, and Jayni Navarro, Tayshia Theibert, and Audrey Trinka each had one in the win. Assisting on the goals were Devota, Kelsi Meinecke, Madsion Lemieux, and Rachel Rigotti. The defense added another shutout on the season. Fowlerville ended April by traveling to Williamston to take on a talented Hornet squad. The girls were outplayed and out-coached on the way to a 5-0 loss. Despite the score, the Glads played hard the entire contest and showed a lot of heart. Katina Tersigni and Roz Opolka split the time in net, making 4 and 6 saves respectively.

The first game of May saw the Glads defeat Ionia by a score of 4-0. Audrey Trinka led the way with 2 goals while Jacie Devota and Selena Lopez added 1 apiece. (3) If a child residing in the school district is not 5 years of age on the enrollment eligibility date specified in subsection (2), but will be 5 years of age not later than December 1 of a school year, the parent or legal guardian of that child may enroll the child in kindergarten for that school year if the parent or legal guardian notifies the school district in writing not later than June 1 before the beginning of the school year that he or she intends to enroll the child in kindergarten. Fowlerville News & Views – Sunday, May 10, 2015 – Page 7 to 1988. Linebaugh’s parents established the William and Marjorie Linebaugh Scholarship, which is awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring in communications at Ferris. Both of the Linebaughs taught for the Fowlerville Community Schools prior to 1969. Another unique association Linebaugh has with the university comes via his banking career. Ferris State University founder Woodbridge N. Ferris was president of Big Rapids Savings Bank from 1902 until his death in 1928. That bank became First National, then affiliated with Chemical Bank in 1988. Linebaugh became Big Rapids community president in 1989. He has Big Rapids Savings Bank stock certificate No. 1 hanging in his office. Linebaugh addressed the College of Business graduates during the 4 p.m. ceremony on Saturday, May 9 in Wink Arena of the Ewigleben Sports Complex in Big Rapids. He told the graduates about his life experiences and the four values that define his life: happy, humble, helpful and hard work.

Fowlerville High alumnus receives honorary degree from Ferris State

For more than 40 years, Karl Linebaugh has been an important figure in the Big Rapids community, both in his professional role as president of Chemical Bank’s North Region and through his altruistic service to Ferris State University and many civic organizations. As a result, Ferris’ Board of Trustees has recognized Linebaugh and his achievements with an honorary Doctorate of Business and Industry degree. Linebaugh and his wife, Cindy (Sherwood), both 1968 graduates of Fowlerville High School, have been Big Rapids stalwarts since moving to town in 1972. Since then, he has been a true pillar of the community, someone who has been an extremely positive force for business, education and the arts. “When you have been a resident of Big Rapids for as long as we have your dedication, appreciation and love for this community becomes second nature and the contributions of time and resources becomes almost automatic,” he said. Linebaugh’s involvement in the community includes serving on various boards and committees. He is a former member and president of the Big Rapids Jaycees, and a former board member and president of the Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce. He is a member who previously served as president and on the board of the Big Rapids Lions Club, and is a founding board member, past president and current member of the Mecosta County Community Foundation. He is a member of First United Methodist Church and chair of its finance committee. He also served as co-president of ArtWorks and is on the advisory board of the Salvation Army. His contributions to the Big Rapids community earned him the Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year recognition and the Mecosta County General Hospital Foundation’s Northern Lights Award in Business and Industry. Linebaugh also has deep ties to the University. In addition to serving on the Ferris Foundation Board of Directors, his involvement with Ferris includes a board position and past chair on the Friends of Ferris and membership in the University’s Founder’s Club. He is past president of the Bulldog Club and served on the 2003 presidential search committee. In addition, his father, William, taught at Ferris from 1969

Student of the Week-- Jade Moros

By Summer Cebula Congratulations to Jade Moros, who is this week’s Fowlerville High School ‘Student of the Week’! Jade has put in a lot of hard work to win this honor! Jade is the daughter of April and Mark. She also has a brother named Nick, who is eight years old with a stepbrother, Ben, who is eleven. Jade’s current class schedule includes the following courses: Biology, Geometry, World History, Spanish III, Psychology, and Honors Sophomore Literature and Composition. Her favorite class is Psychology because she finds it fascinating. Jade’s favorite teacher is Ms. Mossoian because “she’s an excellent teacher as well as a cheer coach.” Ms. Mossoian commented, “Jade is one of my most hard working and polite students. She is always willing to work with students around her, whether she is asking them a question, or sharing her knowledge and ideas. I also coached her during sideline and competitive cheer, so I have had the opportunity to see her open up out-side of the classroom. She has a great sense of humor, great leadership skills, and incredible dedication to her team.” If Jade could change one thing about Fowlerville High School, she would like more participation in athletics. Her favorite aspect of FHS is that there is a lot more opportunities than other schools offer. Her advice to next year’s freshman class is to be who you want to be. In the end, high school only takes up a fraction of your life. To make these memories, Jade participates in many after school activities, including football and competitive cheer. Besides these, she also enjoys hanging out with her friends, working out, and watching Netflix. Her favorite memory with her friends is mainly enjoying the little things that she does with them. Just going to a restaurant or shopping, which end up being the most memorable times. After high school, Jade plans on attending college to either become a nurse or a psychologist. Jade’s favorite movie is Hot Rod and her favorite TV show is Supernatural. She also enjoys Modest Mouse and the game Last of Us. When asked about how she felt about being nominated student of the week, Jade said, “I feel honored to have been recognized, thank you!” Her coach, Alex Drouillard expressed, “Jade is a motivated, dedicated, and hard-working individual. It is an honor to be Jade’s cheer coach and watch her continuously process towards her goals.”

My long road to sobriety

By Pastor Tom Tarpley I was only four in 1946 when I got drunk on homemade corn cob wine in the little town of Newport, Kentucky where my brother and I lived with my grandparents. By the time I was in my mid-to-late 20s, living in Pontiac, Michigan, I was a full-blown alcoholic on my way to becoming a drug addict as well. Today, some 50 years later, I am a ordained minister of the gospel. I am happy, joyous and free, and a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous. I celebrated 25 years of sobriety last July. I spent more than 40 years out on the street, drinking and drugging, abusing and addicted to almost everything out there that would get me high. I have used chemicals that were designed as tranquilizers for elephants and even soaked my marijuana in embalming fluid and other deadly chemicals to try and get a greater high. I would try anything anyone else tried with the exception of heroin. I was always afraid

of heroin because I saw what happened to most of my friends who had used it and died, or were using it and dying. All the way through those years I was always functional, always had a job, and was usually very good at whatever job I had. I never in my life lost a job because of my alcohol or drug addiction. In 1980 it became clear to me that I was traveling on a downhill train that led to nowhere. I stopped using drugs without the aid of a treatment program. The problem with quitting the hard drugs was I needed something to replace them so I increased my alcohol intake to a level of unbelievable proportions. I drank all day long, almost everyday, and when I was not drinking, I was thinking about drinking. Trying to get high on beer was a waste of time for me because it took too long to get where I wanted to go. My drink of choice was anything over 80 proof, usually straight from the bottle to my throat. It would take another nine years to get free of the alcohol in my life. The thing I remember most about my last years of drinking

is that it was no longer fun to drink anymore. I didn’t enjoy it like I did in the beginning. So in 1989 I made the decision to give up drinking, but it was not until I had attended an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. It was at my very first meeting that I realized that I am an alcoholic and I am powerless over alcohol. There is no such thing as “one drink” for me because “one drink” is too many and a thousand is not enough. I thank God that he sent a good friend to my aid. It was this friend who encouraged me to go to AA, and it was this same friend who became my sponsor and helped me to stay sober until the day he passed on to glory. *** In the weeks to follow, I will share with you about my life, what it used to be like, what happened and what it is like today. Michigan Senate Report By Joe Hune, 22nd District

Promoting safety, protecting our kids from strangers As the weather continues to improve, our children will start spending more and more time outdoors, which means we need to make sure our kids know what it means to be safe. Every parent is worried about maintaining safe environments for their kids, but it’s even more important that we help our children learn what environments are safe and unsafe. One of the most important early learning tools for many kids is teaching them to identify strangers and handle interactions with them. I know it’s scary to think about, but there are still instances in Michigan where individuals are attempting to approach or abduct children. We recently saw a few situations in nearby Linden County where multiple children were approached by a stranger. Our police do a great job of responding to and addressing these incidents as they happen, but we have the duty and opportunity to teach our kids how to avoid and respond to these situations before law enforcement has the chance to respond. For many years, parents thought we only had to tell our kids not to talk to strangers, but that isn’t the best standard. For children, what distinguishes strangers is relative to their experiences. Someone at their school or in their neighborhood may look friendly and be in a friendly environment, but that’s why it is important we make sure our kids know that a stranger isn’t just a scary person. As parents and adults in our community, we have to balance the scare factor with education. Let’s make sure our children understand adult issues, which is best done through age-appropriate language and instructing them on what to do in sticky situations. The most important things we can teach our children include: --Always walk, play or hang out with a friend — don’t be outside alone; --Play only in safe, public areas where there are other children or adults around; --Be aware of their surroundings; --Know how to recognize suspicious people or vehicles; --Understand that strangers are not just scary or unknown people. Anyone they don’t recognize or know well is a stranger; --Never talk to, provide assistance to or accept anything from someone they do not know well; and --Never get in a vehicle with someone they do not know. Most importantly, we have to make our kids feel comfortable enough to talk to us in the event that something unpredictable happens. I encourage families to visit the National Crime Prevention Council’s website to find more information on ways we can help teach our kids to recognize and respond to strangers. Go to www.NCPC.org and search for “What to Teach Kids About Strangers.” If you have any further questions, please email my office at SenJHune@senate.michigan.gov or call toll-free at 855-JOE-HUNE and my staff will be happy to assist you.

Deyo has been spotlighted as the May ‘Artist of the Month’ for Fowlerville High School. Hailey created this wonderful pastel using colored paper and bright colors with a very expressive style, something vastly different then her regular style. Hailey as always liked creating art, but remembers it was about third grade that she knew she had talent. Her grandpa encouraged her to create stories with pictures. She is involved in Art Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, soccer and was a dancer and choir member in Footloose this year. She has participated in the Got Art Shows in Howell, and was selected to show her work in the MSUFCU Show. She also volunteered her time and energy creating decorations for the junior high Holiday Dance. Hailey will attend Lansing Community College in the fall and will then transfer to Kendall College of Art and Design to go into illustration. Stop by the office and see her work.

Art and French students at Fowlerville High learn together

Mrs. Hesch’s art class and Mrs. Dowker’s French class joined forces and learned about different Impression Artists. The Fowlerville High students paired off and then shared their respective knowledge. Among the questions asked were: What was the artist known for? What were his most famous paintings? What did they sell for? What was the artist trying to say? After sharing, the art students taught the French students different painting techniques and the French students taught the art students some artist terms in French. They both created their own painting, either in the style of the their artist or recreated a famous painting the artist was know for. To culminate this experience, both classes were able to visit the Detroit Institute of Arts and view some of the paintings they studied.

By Chelsey Lorenz Jessica Anne Haite is currently a senior at Webberville High School and has attended Webberville since the 3rd grade. Haite is the daughter of Eric and Tracy Haite and Cindy Alexander. Haite is the youngest of four, all of whom have graduated from Webberville— Eric Haite, Stephen McKee, Jacob Haite and Jessica Eberly. “Eric and Jacob Haite have made the biggest impact on my high school career because I watched them both go through very rough times in high school, and I never wanted to go through what I saw them go through,” said Haite. She has greatly impacted her fellow students with her own individual country style, showing up to school many times with mud caked to the bottom of her boots. She will mostly be remembered for her truck and horse obsession. Fellow senior and friend, Whitney Bedwell shared one of her favorite memories. “It was fun when we would ride my horses after school. There was one time where the horse she was riding spooked and Jessica almost fell off. We had a good laugh,” said Bedwell. Haite likes to spend her spare time with her horses. She said that she plans on pursuing a career in horse training, after high school. Ever since she was younger, Haite has always wanted to be involved with animals, saying that she used to want to be a Veterinarian. Haite’s fascination with animals is the reason why she enjoys her Zoology class. “We get to learn about animals and spend the day taking care of and playing with little chickens!” Haite said. When asked what her favorite memory was of high school, Haite responded “Winning a State Silver Equine Proficiency Award at the FFA State Convention.” Haite’s experience in FFA has also allowed her to earn her State Degree and she was a state winner in the State Broiler Contest. “Jessica has a tremendous work ethic, and has a such compassion and empathy for animals,” said FFA Advisor Colleen Scott Keiser. “I am so impressed with what she has accomplished, she will certainly be an outstanding employee for anyone who has the chance to hire her.” Currently, Haite is working at Williamson Paints and Quarter Horses, where Haite devotes her time to care for fawns and breeding mares. She also makes time to train the horses as well. “I don’t really know what I want to do specifically, but I look forward to walking across the stage at graduation the end of the school year,” said Haite. Although Haite is still unsure of her immediate plans after high school, she hopes to work in the equine industry as a horse trainer, and she has a dream to open her own equine rescue

Webberville Community Schools offers summer meals to qualified children

For too many children, the end of the school year means an end to the free and reduced price meals they depend on throughout the year. But this summer, with many families struggling to put food on the table, Webberville Community Schools Food and Nutrition Summer Meal Program will help to ensure children do not have to worry about their next meal. The Program will provide regular, healthy meals and snacks for children who might not otherwise receive them. Summer Meal Programs must meet federal nutrition standards, ensuring that children continue to have access to the healthy, well balanced foods they receive throughout the year. ANYONE 18 years of age or under is eligible for free meals and snacks. Beyond fighting hunger, summer nutrition programs support quality programming for young people by boosting attendance at summer enrichment activities and providing the nutrition children need to fuel their day. Children may go on summer vacation, but hunger doesn’t. Webberville Community Schools Summer Meal Program bridges the summer hunger gap and lets our children know that the community cares about their well-being all year long. Meals will be available as follows: Monday-Friday June 15th- August 21st (We will be closed the week of June 29July3). _____ Snack_________________________Lunch_______ Webberville Secondary School (HS/MS) 9:45AM -10:15AM 11:30AM -1:00PM Other sites are being considered. Other areas that might be serviced include day camps (band or athletic), daycares, low income apartment complexes, parks or recreation areas, bible schools or any place that children may congregate. Voters in the Webberville Community School District approved a 10-year renewal on the non-homestead property tax. Handy voters approve renewal of road millage; state proposal soundly defeated

Handy Township voters approved a renewal of the Road Improvement and Dust Control Millage by a large margin. The one-mill levy will continue for another four years. The vote was 627 ‘yes’ to 239 ‘no’. Residents of the Village of Fowlerville did not vote on the proposal, and will not see the levy on their property tax bill. The dedicated mill will bring in an estimated $148,000 this coming year, based on the township’s SEV. A portion of this money is used each year on dust control. Last year the township spent $41,717.36 on this program which involves applying road chloride on the nearly 48 miles of gravel roads. The number of applications (and therefore the cost) varies

from year to year, depending on weather conditions. The remainder of the money is used to fund road improvements. A portion of the township’s general fund also goes towards road projects. While Handy voters were saying “yes” to the local millage renewal, the state proposal to add one cent to the sales tax to help fund highway and bridge improvements was soundly defeated. The statewide tally was 1,404,779 ‘no’ votes to 350,742 ‘yes’ ones. In Livingston County the numbers were ’35,788 ‘no’ to ‘6,436 ‘yes’. While the one percent increase on the sales tax was a main feature, the proposal included other aspects. Among its main features were: eliminating sales & use taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel for vehicles on public roads; increasing a portion of the use tax dedicated to the School Aid Fund; expanding the use of the School Aid Fund to community colleges and career/technical education, and prohibiting use for four-year colleges and universities; and increasing the earned income tax credit for qualified low-income residents.

Michigan House Report By Dr. Hank Vaupel 47nd District

Recently, my colleagues and I have worked on a series of bills that will benefit Michigan families and most especially Michigan’s children. As a member of the House Committee on Families, Children, and Seniors, I have been able to work on some of these bills from the beginning of the legislative process and hope to see them reach the governor’s office soon. House Bills 4071 and 4482 modify current requirements for scheduling a child custody hearing during parental military deployments. This change will ensure that parents serving our country will have an opportunity to defend the changing of a child custody agreement. The bills work together to make sure that a motion for change of custody or change of parenting time will not be considered while a parent is deployed unless there is clear and convincing evidence that a temporary order would be in the child’s best interest. Under the legislation, the parent would be able to file an application for a stay in the proceedings as well as requiring the parent to inform the court of the official active duty end-date. This legislation will go a long way to provide peace of mind for parents serving in the military, as well as protecting those children from unnecessary change. Another bill that was passed on the House floor this week is HB 4457, which eliminates an outdated and unnecessary fee for potential adoptive and foster parents. This bill stops forcing prospective parents to jump through financial hoops will focus on what is important—finding loving homes and families for all Michigan children. The fee that is eliminated under the bill is for registering on the Michigan Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE) database. The Department of Human Services (DHS) ended the fee after realizing the unnecessary burden it places on prospective parent. This is a common-sense measure that will help more children find permanent homes. Finally, a bill that would allow Michigan high-school students more curriculum flexibility was approved in the House this week. House Bill 4390 allows students to take a half-credit course in financial literacy to satisfy the halfcredit needed in economics. Currently, this option is only available to fulfill a portion of mathematics credits. High school students today have many options to consider after high school and it is important that if they have a specific path in mind they are adequately prepared for it. This bill will add that small amount of flexibility some students need so they can adapt to today’s education and workforce landscape. As the legislative session continues I will provide updates about legislation that is being worked on in Lansing.

Rachel Clark scored the final goal to bring home the victory with 1:09 left in the second overtime period. Ollie Updike had an outstanding game and was very instrumental in helping to win balls all day in the midfield and to feed those balls to the strikers who made nice runs for her all day. Bethany Trites, Rayne Phillips and Heidi Siemon played well at the outside midfield position serving in some very nice balls that created many shot opportunities for the Gladiators.

The Gladiator defense also played well, shutting down some very good Ionia scoring opportunities. Jessica Holiday, Natalie Smarch, Jewlissa Aldred, Rayne Phillips, Brook O’Donnell and Rachel Longhi did a fantastic job of shutting down the scoring chances that Ionia tried to create throughout the game. Erin Vielbig and Kayla Villerot split time in goal and Erin did a great job making some key saves in overtime to bring home another victory. *** Varsity Baseball The Fowlerville Gladiators (15-5, 5-1 CAAC White) bounced back from a pair of Saturday (May 2) losses at the Shelander Classic to blank the Hornets twice.
