Sociology AS/A2 Level Examination Board: AQA Aims of Course The aims of this course are to develop knowledge and understanding about sociological theories and research, and to develop the skills of critical analysis. Key themes are culture, socialization, and identity, and social stratification.

AS Level: The AS specification comprises two units. Wealth, Poverty and Welfare is concerned with sociological explanations for the nature and the distribution of wealth and poverty, and students’ understanding of this topic will be examined in the June series. The sociology of education focuses on developing knowledge, skills and critical understanding of the nature of the education process. This module is examined in the January series. A2 Level: The A2 specification comprises two units. Unit 3 focuses on the nature of the mass media and is examined in the January series. Unit 4 focuses on Stratification and Differentiation and the nature of social inequality. Students will also develop their knowledge and understanding of sociological theories and methods. Unit 4 is examined in the June series.
Approaches to learning The specification will be delivered in a variety of ways including teacher-led methods using PowerPoint presentations and group work. It is expected that students will conduct wider reading to develop breadth of knowledge.
Who is this course aimed at? This course is aimed at students who wish to understand the nature of society and how it works. Sociology A Level adopts a scientific approach to understanding society and makes special use of the skills of English language, Government and Politics, and Religious Studies.
Minimum entry requirement is a grade B in English Language at GCSE.
