A PUBLICATION OF FOXCROFT ACADEMY for ALUMNI & FRIENDS
Dear Alumni and Friends,
A
lot has changed at Foxcroft Academy over the past year or so. In academ-
Maine to implement a 1-to-1 iPad initiative, have reinforced our standards-based learning practices by using PowerSchool, and have enhanced our curriculum by giving our talented and creative faculty the freedom to develop a variety of new academic offerings. Within the last few years, we have added more than 30 new elective courses while greatly expanding our in-house technical education offerings and proud of this progress and believe that it is no coincidence that members of our outstanding Class of 2012 received acceptance letters from 50 schools ranked in the top 120 of the U.S. News and World Report’s rankings, our most successful admissions effort in years, if not ever. In campus news, we’ve added a second beautiful dorm, renovated our entire kitchen, and completed the Burns-Johnson Tennis Complex, a massive community project. In athletics, we’ve added two more banners to our gymnasium’s rafters: a second-straight state title in wrestling and an Eastern Maine title in baseball. Our 21 varsity athletic teams have now combined to win 17 state championships and 39 Eastern Maine titles. In community news, we continue to strengthen ties with local businesses and historic Center Theatre and were featured on WABI-TV 5 for our role in helping promote Womancare’s “Race to End Domestic Abuse”. In closing, I’d like to bring your attention to a new major project currently in the works. In order to add to our beautiful campus and continue to enhance our ability to communicate with members of our community, we are planning to add an electronic sign to our grounds (see proposed design by Higgins and Merriam Architects below). We’ll use this sign to advertise SeDoMoCha and town events in addition to our own. If all goes well, we’ll be launching fundraising campaign later this year, and I hope you will consider contributing to this community-centered project. Thank you all for your continued support of Foxcroft Academy. Sincerely, Arnold Shorey Head of School

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS Mission accomplished: Completion of Burns-Johnson Tennis Complex and The Lodge headlines a very busy summer at Foxcroft Academy
T
he new Burns-Johnson Tennis Complex sign was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony that kicked off this year’s Alumni Weekend in early August. The well-attended ceremony marked the completion of the Foxcroft Academy Community Tennis Initiative, a community-driven project that began more than 16 months prior. Two new tennis courts (Hanson Court and Ben Howard Court) and a small basketball court (Dr. Kevin Chasse Court) now sit adjacent to the original Burns-Johnson Courts, which have been completely refurbished. The Burns-Johnson Courts, as they will continue to be known, were built in 1967 and named in memory of Thomas Stanley Burns and Sheldon Frank Johnson, Foxcroft Academy students who died tragically in an automobile accident on June 10, 1966. The project was completed on time thanks to the incredible generosity of community members and the tireless efforts of the Community Tennis Courts Steering Committee, chaired by Dr. Kevin Chasse and composed of Ernie Clark ’77, Jason Frederick ’94, Mary Webber Frederick ’67, Jim Lubas, Tim Magee ’87, Dr. Dennis Ruksznis, Dr. George Kousaie, Terry Snow ’73, Dr. Richard Swett, Ryan Dankert (FA tennis coach), Dr. Norman Hill, Harold Chase ’61, and Head of School Arnold Shorey. In total, more than $160,000 in cash and in-kind donations was raised for the project. After the new sign, which includes a list of all donors who contributed to the Tennis Initiative, was unveiled by the Steering Committee and the ribbon was cut by Winifred C. Macomber (representing the Burns family), Lois Johnson ’81 (representing the Johnson family), John Wentworth (representing the Foxcroft Academy Trustees), and Dr. Chasse (representing the Steering Committee), Shorey awarded plaques to the project’s major Beth Ruksznis, Tim Hanson ’76, the Estate of Benjamin Howard ’61, Pleasant River Lumber, and Sebec Fencing. (A comprehensive list of donors is displayed on the next page.) The Foxcroft Academy tennis teams, which previously played their “home” matches in Guilford, will now host all opponents on these four courts. In addition, the complex will be available to community members, summer visitors, FA staff, and students.
on August 23. Ground was not broken on the new dormitory, which houses 36 students and four faculty families, until mid-April. The was completed to the highest of standards,” said Shorey, who hosted a barbecue to thank the many contractors involved, declaring, “This

barbecue is to celebrate the contractors whose hard work, workmanship, and professionalism made these projects a huge from day one and made this happen.” A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house were held at The Lodge during Homecoming Weekend in September. As depicted on the cover, the ribbon was cut by Jason Merriam (principle owner of Higgins and Merriam Architecture), Kevin Bowman (co-president of Bowman Constructors), John Wentworth (chair of FA’s Buildings and Grounds Committee), and Ken Hews (president of the FA Board of Trustees). Other campus improvements over the summer included a new set of mechanically-controlled bleachers in the gymnasium and commence until this summer.

F
oxcroft Academy alumnus and trustee John Simko recently headed to Washington, D.C. to brief the Congressional Delegation staff on what Pepin Associates, a cutting-edge aerospace materials company in Greenville for which he is the Director of Business Development, is capable of providing for the United States Navy. President and Senior Researcher John Pepin’s company reinforcement of aerospace structures. This novel fabric architecture allows complex parts to be formed easily without cutting or darting of material, and is being considered for use on Navy rotorcraft. This technology, which no one else in the world has, was patented by Pepin in 1996. Simko began working at Pepin Associates, which he described as “a very interesting company to work for and extremely different from any other business in Piscataquis County,” in 2010, following a ten-year stint as Greenville’s town manager. Having grown weary of the grueling nature of public administration, he jumped at the chance to work for Pepin, who he described as “very intelligent, very easygoing, and very committed to the community.” As the Director of Business Development, one of Simko’s main objectives is to help the company become less reliant upon federal contracts and more involved with commercial entities, such as major original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). “The automotive market and the aerospace market are the two biggest opportunities for commercializing our material,” he said. Simko is “determined to help the company grow” and has no intention of leaving Greenville, where he lives with his boy, on January 13. John relates that his daughter Ashley, who has wanted to be a “big sister” for some time, is “excited enough for all three of us!” Simko, who was born in Dover-Foxcroft but grew up in Sebec, graduated from FA in 1988 before attending Bowdoin College, where he studied Environmental Studies and Sociology and was very active in the Outing Club. Upon graduating from Bowdoin in 1992, he moved to Washington to work for then-Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, who had been serving in the U.S. Senate since 1980. Simko worked in a variety of different positions on Capitol Hill and notes that he “might still be there if not for Mitchell’s retirement in 1994.” He returned to Maine after Mitchell stepped down and ran for the state senate but was narrowly defeated in a primary battle with Amber Gahagen of Milo. time at Mr. Paperback and saying, ‘Do you want paper or plastic?’” Shortly thereafter, Simko landed a job as a news director at WDME radio, where he worked for about a year. He credits his time at WDME, which required him to attend quite a few selectmen and school committee meetings across the whole county, with allowing him to “get a sense of how the county operates” and “learn quite a bit about in Greenville to this day. Simko moved from WDME to serve as a grant writer for the town of Dexter, a job that he refers to as his was then recruited to apply for the job of Sangerville Town Manager, a position he occupied for three years before moving on to Greenville. In addition to his current work for Pepin Associates, Simko was also recently elected Fire Chief for Greenville and continues to work as an Intermediate EMT for C.A. Dean Hospital’s Ambulance Service in Greenville. Pepin and Simko in front of a full-scale model of a new amphibious airplane under development by the Pepin Aircraft Company.

Now at their 60th reunion they were able to present a check for $5365. Meanwhile the Class of 1962 was happy to announce that they too had surpassed their $5000 goal. They began the fundraising process just a few years ago and were able, at this their 50th reunion weekend, to present a check to Mr. Shorey for $5827! Word is that the Class of 1961 has also crossed the $5000 threshold and plans to announce their good news at next year’s Alumni Banquet.

FOXCROFT ALUMNA LEAVES LEGACY
I
n 1994, Foxcroft Academy initiated the Legacy Circle, which recognizes, honors, and thanks alumni, parents, and friends
(see listing of members on page 7). Berta Washburn Fitzgerald of the often spoke highly of Foxcroft Academy throughout her life. Her many activities while a student were listed in her 1939 yearbook entry and included the following: basketball, public speaking, Commercial Club, National Honor Society, and drama.
Pictured to left: Catherine Fitzgerald Tucker, Virginia Fitzgerald, Margaret Fitzgerald Hon, Roberta Fitzgerald, and Arnold Shorey
Berta played “Aunt March” in the Senior Play Little Women (pictured below) and was known for her pulic speaking prowess. She treasured her medals and awards from speaking competitions. On April 16, 1939, she wrote a letter to her Aunt Mabel Washburn, a teacher at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis. Berta’s daughter Roberta states, “I think it best captures the love she had of her days at Foxcroft Academy.” In this letter Berta wrote: Last week was full of honors for me. Monday, I represented Foxcroft Academy in a County Prize Speaking Contest held in Guilford, at which Laugh, Clown, Laugh by Albert Van Antwerp. Have you ever heard it? The prize was a very sweet gold medal that I wear on a chain around my neck. On Tuesday, April 11, I was announced one of the nine honor students of the class of ’39. Each of us was given a rose-bud. On Thursday, another medal was added to the one I had for being the winner of the humorous section of a local prize speaking contest. Nibble [her sister Mabel Washburn Parkman’s nickname] was also in this contest and did very well as this was on Class Day. Do you have a day called Class Day during Commencement week? Do you know any unusual places that we might meet? I thought perhaps you could tell me of some place that your senior class has met in the previous years. Next Friday, April 21, I will go to the state speaking contest that will be held at the U of M. The following week, I will represent F.A. in a New England speaking contest held at the U of NH. This will be a two day trip. The debating team, which by the way is very good this year, will go the same weekend to a debate tournament. Bet we have fun...I must close now and work on the “ad” department of our Senior Annual. I am advertising manager and it takes all my extra moments.
the intention of honoring their mother’s wish to leave a $10,000 gift to the Fred and Hattie Washburn Scholarship Fund. Earlier this fall, Berta’s gift was presented to Head of School Arnold Shorey by Berta’s four daughters: Roberta Fitzgerald, Catherine Fitzgerald Tucker, Virginia Fitzgerald, and Margaret Fitzgerald Hon. The entire Foxcroft Academy community wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Berta and her family.
The following people donated in Berta’s memory to the Fred & Hattie Washburn Scholarship Fund: Dr. & Mrs. Robert Bach, Mr. & Mrs. Larry Conley, Mr. & Mrs. Bruce Grant, Mrs. Jane Grant, Mr. Ted Grant, Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Hon III, Mrs. Carolyn Olson, and Mr. & Mrs. Robert White
