A PUBLICATION OF FOXCROFT ACADEMY for ALUMNI & FRIENDS

How Did the First Year Go and What Happens from Here? An Interview with Head of School Arnold Shorey What attracted you to Foxcroft Academy?

I grew up in central Maine and worked as an educator for many years in the region, and I was always aware of FA’s outstanding reputation. I was content in my previous job (Assistant Superintendent for RSU 19), but I jumped at this opportunity when it opened up. This is my dream job, and it feels like home.

What were some of the highlights from your first year?

We had five goals going into last year, and we made good progress on all of them. Our first goal was to establish a 10-year strategic plan to upgrade our current facility in order to better meet our student needs and become a more green campus. We held several advisory forums in which students were able to discuss changes they would like to see. We want them to know that this is their school and we value their input. Our second goal was to improve our technology infrastructure, and we have done this by launching an iPad initiative and providing our faculty with the professional development needed to get the most out of these amazing new tools. Along those lines, our faculty and administration entered into a professional dialogue about best instructional practices, and one of our major goals for this year is for all teachers to focus on improving our students’ critical reading and writing skills. Our third, and perhaps biggest, goal last year was to get all the parts to work together, and we continue to make progress with all stakeholders working together to achieve the school’s mission. We have worked hard to build stronger relationships with all our constituents: students, parents, RSU 68, and alumni. We worked with the DoverFoxcroft Homecoming Committee in organizing Alumni Weekend, attended all RSU 68 board meetings and participated in their strategic-planning protocol, added more events that promote the return of alumni to FA (such as the Athletic Hall of Fame induction), formed a Parent Advisory Council, and involved students in some of our important decisions. Our fourth goal was to better integrate boarding and day students (we’re all Ponies), and we therefore offered an increased number of activities that included all students: dodgeball and basketball tournaments, horseback riding, winter camping, and many other trips. We believe these efforts have paid off; the level of participation of boarding students during this year’s Homecoming was the best it’s ever been. Our final goal was to start a summer academic program, maximizing the potential of our facility by ensuring that our beautiful new dorm is being used 12 months a year. This August we ran a successful International Prep program that featured three weeks of intensive SAT and TOEFL classes along with a steady flow of outdoor activities.

What are some of the challenges you face at Foxcroft Academy?

A stagnant global economy and a declining population in our area can make it difficult to meet our financial needs while still meeting student needs, and it also makes it difficult for us to recruit and retain the very best teachers. Without the generosity of our alumni and community, we would be forced to make some very difficult decisions. In addition, we need to work hard to stay current in our instructional practices in the ever-changing landscape of education. We also must continue to provide educational programs (such as our partnership with Tri-County Technical Center) that will support a variety of career choices. Despite these challenges, I am confident that we have all the pieces in place to realize our vision of being a competitive New England independent school of excellence for all our students.

Correction Notice: In the fall 2010 issue of the Foxcroft, Alfred and Elizabeth Buck were inadvertently omitted from the 2010 donor listing. We sincerely apologize for this error.

Foxcroft Academy Breaks Ground on Community Tennis Initiative The building stage of the Foxcroft Academy Community Tennis Initiative is now officially underway. Phase one of the initiative is the construction of two new tennis courts across the street from Foxcroft Academy in time for the start of the 2012 high school tennis season. The next phase of the project will be to restore the adjacent tennis courts that were built in 1966 and named in memory of Thomas Stanley Burns and Sheldon Frank Johnson, who both died tragically in a car accident in 1966. The Foxcroft Academy tennis teams, which previously played some of their “home” matches in Guilford, will now host all opponents on these four courts. In addition, this facility will be available to community members, summer visitors, FA staff, and students. Left to right: Rose Johnson Grant '77, The Community Tennis Courts Steering Committee, chaired by Dr. Kevin Chasse, has spearheaded a fundraising campaign that has raised nearly all of the money Randy Johnson '69, Shelly Johnson Snow '89, Judy Johnson Lewis '75, and Lois Johnson '81 needed to complete the project. A great number of community members--including key donors Dr. Chasse, Dr. George Kousaie, Dr. Norman Hill, Mrs. Donna Hathaway '66, Mr. Jason Brochu (Pleasant River Lumber), Mr. Harold Chase '61, Dr. Dennis Ruksznis, Mrs. Margaret Webber '37, Plum Creek Foundation, and others-have contributed to the initiative. Elwood Edgerly ’72 and Blake Smith ’87 have led the charge in coordinating local contractors for in-kind donations. “This has been a very exciting project--a true community effort,” said FA Head of School Arnold Shorey. “FA is very pleased to be able to share this valuable resource with the community.” Dr. Chasse, Chair of the Steering Committee, recognizes that the new courts will not only help tennis players in this community, but will also benefit future generations of players by making more and better courts available to all. “This is a project we’ve needed for some time--both for FA and for the community as a whole,” he noted. “These courts Steering Committee: Dr. George Kousaie, Donna Hathaway ’66, have seen a lot of use over the years, and there is a real need Mr. Ryan Dankert (FA tennis coach), Dr. Norman Hill, Mr. Elwood Edgerly to add more courts and repair the current ones. This initiative '72, Dr. Kevin Chasse (chair), Harold Chase '61, and Arnold Shorey. will also enhance and beautify the FA campus.” A list of donors will be permanently displayed in recognition of their philanthropic support in helping make this project a reality. In addition, a ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for August 3, 2012 to kick off Alumni Weekend. If you are interested in supporting this initiative, please contact Arnold Shorey at (207) 564-8351.

Foxcroft Academy Report of Charitable Giving 2010-2011 Listing for gifts received 7/1/10-6/30/11

Foxcroft Academy would not have received its charter in 1823 without the philanthropic support of the surrounding communities. Nearly two centuries later, the Academy still relies upon the generosity of alumni, parents, and community members to fulfill its Mission Statement:

Foxcroft Academy is committed to developing responsible and informed citizens, critical thinkers, and collaborative leaders. FA is a community promoting the development of integrity, character, and skills necessary for life-long learning. Thank you to all donors who have so generously contributed more than $171,000 in support of Foxcroft Academy. The support we receive will help Foxcroft in our mission to provide a top-flight education to students from Piscataquis County and the world abroad. Our three goals for this year as set by our faculty and staff are as follows: to implement the use of technology to enhance student learning, instruction and assessment; to institute a school-wide responsibility to create and support the diverse community of students through integrative activities and learning opportunities; to implement best practices that promote critical reading and writing across the curriculum. Foxcroft helped shape the person you are today—or that your son or daughter will be tomorrow. For every generation of Foxcroft students, the generosity of our donors has been crucial. With your support, we can continue to enhance and ensure our success in accomplishing these goals. Every single gift, at every level, makes a difference. Thank you for your support!

Horizon Scholars Report National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine

By Atticus Dennis ’13

This past summer I took part in a medical conference in Boston. The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine (NYLF) was a nine-day conference in which I explored the field of medicine and was able to meet with many like-minded people from around the country and the world. We took two site visits: Harvard Medical School and Holyoke Medical Center. At Harvard we talked with a medical student about studying medicine and participated in patient care problem solving. At Holyoke we learned about disaster preparedness and pharmacy and physical rehabilitation careers. We also had two meetings with difAtticus pictured first on left. ferent professionals in the fields of chiropractics and physical rehabilitation. It was interesting to learn what kind of education the doctors had and what they did on a daily basis, which encouraged my interest in their types of medicine. I also participated in an HIV/ AIDS forum in which three different people with the disease spoke about it and how they fought their sickness. I was astounded at how resilient and courageous these people are. I witnessed a total knee replacement surgery done in Ohio over a video connection, and we were allowed to ask the surgeons questions. The last event that I took part in was a disaster triage, in which doctors or emergency personnel arrive at an emergency and must take care of each patient quickly and effectively. This gave me a taste of what it would be like to work in an emergency room or as an EMT. Overall, my time in Boston increased my desire to join the field of medicine. The pharmacy in Holyoke Medical Center was one of the most interesting parts of the trip because I learned about a field that I had never known about before. The knee replacement surgery was also eye-opening, although it made me a little sick watching the top of the person’s knee be shaved away by a chisel. It was a wonderful experience and I am thankful to the Everett and Evelyn Johnston Horizon Scholarship for making this experience possible for me!

LEAD America Program in Medicine

Over the summer Gabi Henderson ’13 (center) had the opportunity to attend a medical conference at Olin College in Massachusetts. In her own words, “I would have to say this medical conference is the best thing that I have ever experienced. Not only did I learn about the medical field, but I met people from all over the world and made lifelong friendships with people from India and Japan. We learned how to do a physical examination, CPR, and about the different fields in medicine. In addition, I had the opportunity to attend lectures from professors from Boston University. I received a new perspective about the medical field and the many choices of this great and rewarding profession. I am now better prepared to make a decision on which field I would like to pursue in college.” “This experience would not have been possible for me without the Barb Goodwin Horizon Scholarship. I strongly believe that Horizon Scholarships open new doors for students and am very thankful for this opportunity.”

A Summer Session on Aquaponics

By faculty member Julie Willcott This summer I attended a training session on aquaponics at Herring Gut Learning Center in Tenants Harbor. Aquaponics is a system which combines aquaculture, or raising fish, with hydroponics, or raising plants in water. Basically, the fish waste is used to fertilize the plants. It was a great workshop and I was really inspired to incorporate aquaponics into my teaching. In addition to the training, I received a set-up for my classroom (pictured to the right). Thanks to the Horizon Scholarship Program for assisting me in attending this program.

Horizon Scholars Report Future Filmmakers in the Making

By James Birtwistle ’12 This summer, I took a two-week filmmaking class at Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine. As soon as I arrived I realized that this was going to be a very intense program. We had about thirteen hours per day of class time, and then even more time after that to write scripts and develop shot lists for the short films we would all have finished by the end of the two weeks. I wouldn’t have thought that a four-minute short would take sixty hours of work, but this turned out to be the case. During the first week, we learned basic camera skills and shot composition; we watched all kinds of movies to get the feel of different techniques and styles used to portray a story; we practiced filming short examples. During this week alone, I learned more than I ever have about film production and how 30 individually-meaningless clips can be put together to make something incredible. After we had been there for a week, we moved on to writing and directing our own short films. We created every part of our films; we wrote, filmed, and edited our work into a finished product. We booked actors and locations; we gathered all the equipment and props we were going to need. This was an amazing experience as it forced us to use everything we learned and put it all together. The one downside of this workshop was its hefty price. I didn’t really have $3000 that I could spend on a summer program. I looked into getting scholarships and was told that FA has its own scholarship program. Louis Philpot, a 1930 graduate of Foxcroft Academy, established a Horizon Scholarship in 1999, and that, combined with a scholarship from Maine Media Workshops, made it possible for me to attend. Again, this program was an incredible experience for me, and would be for anyone interested in filmmaking. I learned so much, even in such a short span of time. Note: Kate Morrison ’13, Stephanie Chevalier (ESL, Psychology, and Filmmaking teacher), and Mark Chevalier (Communications Officer and Filmmaking teacher) also received Horizon Scholarships to attend Maine Media Workshops this summer. Kate honed her editing skills in “Final Cut Pro for Teens” while Mark and Stephanie took the “Film and Video Teachers Workshop”.

Foxcroft Students Stand Against Domestic Abuse

Despite cold and rainy conditions, this year’s “Race to End Domestic Abuse” drew a recordsetting crowd of 78 runners and 566 walkers, raising $16,700 for Dover-Foxcroft’s Womancare. Foxcroft Academy helped promote this event and also swept the top six spots in the 5K race. Social Studies teacher and Cross Country coach, Brett Almasi, won the 5K with a time of 19:48, and five members of his team were not far behind. Fall/Winter 2011

New Faculty The hiring that Foxcroft coaches and student athletes are most excited about is that of Jaclyn Tourtelotte, full-time Athletic Trainer. In addition to working as a trainer, Jaclyn will teach Physical Education and Physical Management. Jaclyn spent the past six years at Orono HS, where she taught Health and Physical Education and served as the school’s Athletic Trainer. She has a BS in Kinesiology and Physical Education from UMO and also attended the university’s Education Leadership program. Jaclyn enjoys hiking, cycling, camping, and playing with her cattle dogs. Kandi Grant Martin ’93 returns as Foxcroft’s newest School Counselor, a role she held from 1999-2004. In addition to her counseling duties, she’ll serve as co-advisor for the sophomore class and will act as an advisor to PALS. Kandi took 20042008 off to stay at home with her two children (Logan, 8, and Lauren, 7) and then worked at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor as a counselor for the past two years. While a stay-at-home mom, she developed her own business, Country Mamma Signs (which is still in business). Kandi obtained a bachelor’s degree in Childhood Development and Family Relations as well as a master’s degree in Education from UMO. Her hobbies include camping and four-wheeling with her husband and children.

Adam Perkins will be teaching Computer Applications, Web Development, and Business IT; he’ll also co-teach the Filmmaking class that was started last year. Adam taught in the Sociology department at Texas State University for the past two years. He holds an AAS from Eastern Maine Technical College in Business Management, a BA from UMO in Sociology, and an MA from Texas State University in Sociology. Adam loves hiking, skiing, walking his dog, and learning about all kinds of technology. Sarah Krause is teaching Algebra and Geometry for the Math department. She earned a BS in Secondary Education and a BA in Mathematics from UMO in 2009. She did her student teaching at FA while working on her degrees and “jumped at the opportunity to return to FA as a full-time teacher.” Sarah taught sixth grade math as a long-term substitute at Orono Middle School and taught Calculus Recitations as a teaching assistant and tutor at UMO. She also recently worked for Eastern Maine Development Corporation as a career advisor, helping clients find employment or obtain funding for training programs. In her free time, Sarah enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. She is also a lover of music and art and “believes that these things are NOT mutually exclusive from mathematics.”

Dan Straine replaces Jim Garland, who retired after 17 years of teaching in the FA Special Services department. Dan will be providing direct instruction in Math and English. He previously served as a Multimedia Arts Teacher for a non-profit in Vermont, managed and taught photography workshops in Vermont, worked as an Ed Tech at Orono HS, and student taught at both Old Town HS and Hampden Academy. He holds an AA in Photography (Brookdale Community College), a BA in Journalism (Johnson State College) and a M.Ed in Special Education (UMO). Dan, who attended middle school and most of high school at the American International School of Luxembourg, works part-time as a freelance writer and photographer for a host of regional clients. He enjoys soccer, baseball, gardening, fly-fishing, camping, hunting, skiing, biking, and surfing, and he plans to put his love for the outdoors to use by organizing some outdoor adventure trips for students at FA.

Homecoming Week September 19-23

Judges declared that the juniors’ float was the best, but the seniors took first place in the Spirit Stick competition and ultimately walked away with their second straight Homecoming title! After upsetting the Class of 2011 last year, this year’s senior class was determined not to be upstaged. Their total of 74 points was enough to outlast the hard-charging juniors (67), the upstart freshmen (58), and the sophomores (53). No one can accuse the senior class of lacking school spirit.

The football team avenged last year’s season-ending loss to Stearns High School with a resounding 31-6 win on Friday night.

The Class of 2013 built a circus on wheels for their Homecoming float.

The field hockey team improved to 7-1 on the season with a dominant 6-0 win at home against PCHS, giving Coach Gene Philpot her 350th career win at FA.

Our Community October 12

October 12 was “Make a Difference Morning” for the Class of 2015. All Foxcroft Academy freshmen branched out into the community and performed three hours of volunteer work with their advisory group. The annual event, started by the Counseling Services Office four years ago, has been a big success each year. “This program has been great for the community and great for our kids,” said Lee Pearsall, Director of Counseling Services. “The feedback we’ve received--both from students and from participating businesses--has been overwhelmingly positive each year.”

Jordan Allen cleans the walls at Center Theatre, where students also vacuumed, painted, and fixed arm rests on theatre seats.

Mrs. Chase’s advisory group raked leaves and cleaned up debris at the town beach. Zachary Johnson, Mason Bell, Trevor Tash, Caleb Edgerly, Kaleb Faloon, and Gaige Pleninger raked leaves and washed windows at the PRYMCA.

Dexter Canning, the youngest fire chief in Dover-Foxcroft history, polished the town’s trucks to a high shine.

Annie Rich, Shayla Bickmore, Bram Dennis, Zhou Zijun, Drew Smith, and Alisha Thomas did some raking and gardening at the Thompson Free Library.

Devin Kerr ran a raucous Bingo game at Hilltop Manor. Other students cleaned up the grounds outside, played games with residents, and even treated a few lucky ladies to manicures.

Foxcroft Academy’s Howard Ryder Dedication

Pictured on the cover: Back--LR: Heidi Ryder Bray ’94 and husband Jamie ’93, Lincoln Ryder ’ 91 and spouse Brenda Front--LR: Wyatt and Lilian Bray, Betty Doyon Ryder, and Haley and Colby Ryder

At the annual meeting of the Foxcroft Academy Board of Trustees last August, a portrait of former Head of School Howard F. Ryder was commissioned in honor of his fourteen years of service to the Academy. His tenure as Head of School was second only to Tillson Thomas, Principal from 1947 through 1972. More than 120 family members, friends, former colleagues, alumni, and community members gathered in the Pride Student Center for a stirring tribute to Mr. Ryder, whose portrait was dedicated to FA and now hangs in the Academy’s main hallway. Doug Cummings, former Assistant Head of School and Athletic Director at FA, regaled the crowd with stories of his close friend and former colleague. Other speakers at the event were Dr. Thomas Harvey ’68, former director of Counseling Services at FA, the Honorable Kevin Stitham ’70, and Jamie Bray ’93, Mr. Ryder’s son-in-law. Mr. Ryder’s wife, Betty Doyon Ryder, ended the dedication with reflections on her husband’s life and even shared a pair of his bronzed baby shoes with the crowd. Mr. Ryder began his career at Foxcroft Academy in 1980 as Assistant Head of School and Athletic Director under the headship of Jim Steenstra. In 1981 he took over as Head of School and remained in that position until 1994 when he left to become Head of School at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle, Maine. He was honest and direct and believed in guiding and empowering others in their positions of responsibility. Schools and children thrived under his care, direction, and influence. Mr. Ryder passed away at the age of 57 on November 11, 2006.

South American Trip Reveals the Big Picture By Dana Frasz ’01

The inspiration for a 15-week trip to South America started from the desire to share a unique journey with my Mom. We discovered an organization that works with indigenous people to help preserve their lands and culture. Seeking a trip that would be personally satisfying and environmentally and culturally rich, we signed up, stocked up on mosquito repellent, and flew to Ecuador. Deep in the jungle, we shared meals, stories, and even dreams with the Achuar tribe, a spiritual people who live in harmony with the earth and whose lives and home are being threatened by oil companies. It was here, surrounded by the beauty and power of nature, that I was confronted with the urgency and importance of coming together to build a more sustainable, socially just, and spiritually fulfilled world. Following the rainforest journey, I was joined by my friend Mark, and we spent days traversing the Ecuadorian landscape with the local people, passing through small agricultural villages tucked in and around lush green mountains. We walked the coastal beaches scattered with sand dollars, hiked to hidden waterfalls, interacted with grazing wild horses, volunteered on a remote organic farm, and ate enormous quantities of ceviche, a delicious dish made of raw fish marinated in cit-

rus. After Ecuador, we explored Peru: traveling through one of the most arid deserts in the world, hiking for 3 days in a canyon twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, and staying with families that inhabit the beautiful region around Lake Titicaca. Finally we spent an entire day from sunrise to sunset taking in the breathtaking views at Machu Picchu.

16 FOXCROFT ACADEMY

In Bolivia, the skies were incessantly blue, the sun remarkably warm, the wind brisk, and the nights as cold as December in Maine. We made friends through the CouchSurfing website and completed a brutal but amazing 42 mile

trek with them in 2 days. Our next adventure involved a long, cold, dusty, bumpy bus ride to arrive at the largest salt deposits in the world. It was well worth it as we spent the next 3 days admiring volcanoes, multi-colored lagoons, geysers, hot springs, and strikingly beautiful rock formations. This transformational journey reminded me of the abundance of beauty in this world, the strength and value of nature, and how crucial it is to nurture the spirit. It gave me hope and inspiration to see communities living simply and happily in harmony with the earth. I gained a deeper understanding of our global interconnectedness and the extent to which our individual and collective actions have global consequences. Lifestyles rooted in consumption and acquisition threaten communities like the Achuar and the health and wellbeing of the entire planet. We have the skills, power, and resources to change these destructive ways and create a more just and sustainable world. We can realign our actions to be more consistent with the needs of society, our personal values, and the environmental realities of our times. We have been privileged with a great opportunity to influence the future of life on this planet. By embracing this challenge we can live the most meaningful lives any generation of human kind has ever lived and accelerate the shift towards a more rich and beautiful existence on this planet.
