A PUBLICATION OF FOXCROFT ACADEMY for ALUMNI & FRIENDS

HEAD OF SCHOOL’S ADDRESS Hello Ponies! It has been very busy since the last issue of the Foxcroft. I hope you enjoy this issue, as this is the first of many that Toby Nelson ’95 will put together. I want to update you on Foxcroft Academy’s accreditation process, let you know about some of Foxcroft Academy’s recent recognitions, and once again thank you for your generosity. FA has just completed the New England Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation visit. This has been a three-year project, led by Assistant Head of School for Academics, Jonathan Pratt, in which the faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni reviewed all aspects of the Academy under the framework of fourteen standards. The final report contains many commendations as well as recommendations that are based upon factual data that will be the foundation for future goals to continue to strengthen the programs of Foxcroft Academy. I would like to thank Bill Rayfield ’89, Jack Clukey ’88, Sandy Shapleigh Perkins ’75, Amy Fagan-Cannon ’99, and Tom Gerrish ’52 who formed the alumni committee that spoke with the visiting team. My favorite quote of the report is, “The visiting committee observed a strong community, committed to providing an outstanding education that meets students where they are and prepares them for the next step, whatever that step may be.” That is a powerful thing to say about a school and FA will continue to work hard to keep this statement true. Foxcroft Academy received some very positive feedback. This summer, FA was listed in the Washington Post as one of America’s Most Challenging High Schools. This recognition was based on the number of Advanced Placement and college credit courses per student. Of the six Maine schools listed in the rankings, Foxcroft Academy was third. Also, Foxcroft Academy has once again been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2016-2018. This award is based on excellence in five areas: Visionary Leadership, Innovative Learning and Teaching, Ongoing Professional Development, Compelling Evidence of Success, and Flexible Learning Environment. Faculty member Mia Morrison did a great job overseeing the production of our second iBook required in the nomination process. Associate Head of School Tim Smith was recognized as winner of the “92.9 Sports Heroes Award”, in recognition of his hard work with not only high school athletics but also with the youth in the Dover-Foxcroft community. Finally, Director of IT Rob Brown, just presented at a national technology conference on the JAMF System and Applications. The knowledge our faculty and staff provides is growing far and wide! Once again, I would like to thank you for your generosity in responding to mini capital campaigns that support the students of Foxcroft Academy. This past spring, all funds were raised through donations for the Gary D. Wakeland Memorial Pole Vault Pit with a great turnout at the ribbon cutting ceremony. The new swim scoreboard/timing system campaign for the PRYMCA has gone very well. All expenses for this project will be covered by generous donations from FA alums and local businesses. Five of the six lanes are currently named. Howard Insurance and the Dow Family are our leading donors and the timing area will be named in their honor. A ribbon cutting ceremony will take place in the near future. (story will be in the spring 2017 issue) This is a fun time at Foxcroft Academy with accreditation behind us. Our fall sports teams made us very proud as the field hockey team had an undefeated regular season, the boys soccer team made it to the quarterfinals and the football team made it back to the Class C playoffs. We are very proud of our students and it is because of your generous support that all of these opportunities are possible.

Stacy and I would like to wish you and yours a happy holiday season. Ride on Ponies,

Letter From the Editor - Toby Nelson - FA Director of Communications and Marketing I have been on the job for just over four months. When I started, I was well aware that part of my duties would be the editor of the Foxcroft Academy alumni magazine. I knew it was a big part of what we do, as I have been a recipient of the semi-annual publication since I graduated in 1995. Now, I am on the other end. As I sat down to work on my first magazine as Executive Editor, I really didn’t know where to start. I knew there was so much material that needed to be highlighted over the last six months, but what and where would I place it? We needed stories, pictures, graphs, lists and so much more. Luckily, I don’t go at this alone. Our Advancement Team spent hours working to make this publication the best it can be. We researched, gathered, and edited everything more than once. After it’s all said and done, I think this is an issue we can all be proud of. Since I returned, I’ve had a smile on my face almost all the time. The faculty and staff have all been so welcoming, the students help keep me young, and the people around town have been wonderful. There is no place I would rather be. So, while this edition of the Foxcroft took hours and hours, it’s a labor of love; Love for a school and love for a community. Always remember, Foxcroft Academy is your school. It is where you grew up. It is where you learned to become a better person and citizen of the world. It is where you learned to win with grace and lose with your head held high. It may be a place where you laughed and cried all in the same day. In the end, Foxcroft Academy is home. This is your magazine. I’m proud to be a part of it. If you have suggestions or story ideas, I want to hear from you. E-mail me at toby.nelson@foxcroftacademy.org or call during school hours, (207) 564-8351. I would love to hear from you. Tell me about your time at Foxcroft, a special memory from when you were in school, or tell me about a former faculty member who made an impact on your life while you were in school or as you made your way out into the “real world”. In the 1970’s, Sister Sledge had a hit song, “We are Family”. Well, that’s what we are at Foxcroft Academy except I have more than my sisters with me. Enjoy the following publication and as always, ride on Ponies!

HORIZON SCHOLARSHIPS

Horizon Scholarships were established to expand academic opportunities and to enhance the personal and academic growth of Foxcroft Academy students and faculty. They provide financial support for exceptional academic experiences, and without the kindness of FA’s alumni and their contributions to sixteen distinct Horizon Scholarship funds, as well as proceeds from the Foxcroft Golf Scramble each Alumni Weekend, students would not be able to experience opportunities like the great ones shared below.

Kode with Klossy Brianna Adkins ’17

The fourteen days I spent in New York City churning out code faster than my brain could register, meeting 26 amazing young women, and accomplishing every dream on my list were the best of my entire existence. Each day was a new way to learn complex methods, strings, and variables, while each night was an adventure ready to be explored. I lived, laughed, and cried my way through that experience, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I had no idea I’d get into Kode with Klossy, but I applied for, then received the Horizon Scholarship anyway. The amount of money and faith they put in me was phenomenal. Not only did the scholarship make my dream possible—it made it happen. When I received the e-mail, I was backstage for the three act I finally landed a lead role for, wearing a Chewbacca onesie, and touching up my costume makeup. My iPad dinged with a notification and the words, “Congratulations Brianna,” lit up the screen like fireworks. That night was the best of my life. The teachers taught us to celebrate every 404 error with a round of high fives and how to think technically and creatively. I overcame every obstacle I encountered at that camp, from going through eight laptops in one day—I was the glitch—to losing every line of code I worked on in an hour, because of save errors. It taught me how to be patient, work hard, and most importantly, save my work. Every moment of coding, meeting Karlie, and hanging out on the rooftop was amazing. I never wanted it to end. It helped me realize that pursuing a STEM field in my future was possible, and it’s empowered me to believe in myself every day. Kode with Klossy was the greatest time of my life, and I’m so lucky and blessed to have had the chance to go. The Shirley Gammon Horizon Scholarship gave me that opportunity, and I’ll forever be grateful.

Erika Chadbourne ’17 • • • • • • • • • •

This summer I embarked on one of the most life changing experiences I’ve ever been on. I was accepted into Outward Bound and chose their 15 Day Appalachian Trail and Canoeing program. I knew it was one of the more physically difficult courses, but what I wasn’t prepared for was the amount of grit and mental strength it required. Over the course of the itinerary, I hiked and canoed over 60 miles with a group I can now proudly call my family. With no technology or toiletries, what you carried on your back was what you had. I hiked through spruce thickets, bushwhacked through dense forests without a trail, went 8 hours straight without a source of water in sight, was stung by 8 yellow jackets, canoed 12 miles in the wrong direction at one in the morning, and portaged a canoe over my head. I won’t lie, there were a few times I wanted to stop. However, I found support and guidance in the smiles of the ten people I shared everything with. They helped me keep moving forward, and I know that I will carry these memories with me, for whatever life throws in my way, I will, “serve, strive and never yield.” The money I received from the Gordon & Wilma Andrews Horizon Scholarship Fund helped me to purchase my supplies for this wonderful trip.

“While at Kode with Klossy, I learned how to build a calculator, defeat programs they set up for us, and build a website apps”

AROUND THE ACADEMY JUDGE STITHAM STEPS AWAY FROM THE FA BOARD OF TRUSTEES....THE END OF AN ERA FOR NOW The Honorable Kevin Stitham has served Foxcroft Academy on the Board of Trustees for 28 years, with two stints as a Trustee for a total 25 years and as an Honorary Trustee for 3 years. In fact, a member of the Stitham and/or Hayes (spouse Jane’s family) families have served Foxcroft Academy as a Trustee for the past six decades. Kevin has provided the Board with valuable knowledge of the law, by-laws and history of Foxcroft Academy and conveyed this valuable knowledge in a manner that only Kevin can. His vision, tenacity and dedication will be missed and his service is greatly appreciated. “Over the last 60 years, what Kevin and his family have done for Foxcroft Academy and the community we serve can’t really be measured,” said Arnold Shorey, Head of School. “He and his fellow Trustees care so much for the history of our school, the building we are in and students we educate. While he is no longer an active Trustee, his presence will be felt as an Honorary Trustee. We can’t thank him and his family enough for the service to FA.” As Mr. Shorey just mentioned, the good news for the Foxcroft Board is that Kevin will stay on as an Honorary Trustee! Thank you Judge Stitham for your many years of dedicated service to Foxcroft Academy!

NEW EAST SIDE PARKING LOT FINISHED; EASES PARKING AND HELPS WITH HANDICAP ACCESS If you have been on campus for an extra-curricular event over the last many years, parking has always been the most common issue we have. Last spring, FA decided it was time to do something about the problem. We added over 50 new parking spaces on the East side of our building next to the English and Music wing. These are much needed spots for faculty and staff during the day and for visitors to our campus during nights and weekends. Like many projects that have been done over the years, the new East side parking lot fits into the landscape and looks like it has been here for years! At Foxcroft Academy, we want all of our students, parents, visitors, and fans to feel welcomed when they are on our campus for a school function or program. Whether you are here during the school day or here after school hours, we want you to have the best experience possible. If you need help entering the building or getting around campus, here are a few useful tips: 1.) If you require a handicap entrance to the school, please park in the new East parking lot and access the building from there. We have ramps and elevators that will get you to every floor, classroom, and into the gymnasium. 2.) If you are attending an outdoor event and need help getting to an athletic field, please contact our Associate Head of School Tim Smith, prior to the event, at tim.smith@foxcroftacademy.org or call him at (207) 564-8351. We are more than happy to provide ground transportation to whatever field you need to get to. Please do not hesitate to call or e-mail us about getting around our buildings and grounds. We love our students, parents, fans, and visitors. We are here to make your Foxcroft experience a great one and a place you will want to visit over and over again!

AROUND THE ACADEMY JAY BRAINARD BRIDGE DEDICATION/SUMMIT PROJECT WEEKEND On Saturday, July 30th, the bridge spanning the Piscataquis River on the Atkinson/Sebec town line was dedicated and named after one of Foxcroft's own. Capt. John "Jay" Brainard ’04, was killed in action while defending our freedom in the Middle East on Memorial Day 2012. Jay grew up in Atkinson. After graduating in 2004, he attended UMaine. He was proud of his schools, community, and his country. Little did he know, we were just as proud to call him our own. The next time you drive over the Capt. John "Jay" Brainard Gold Star Memorial Bridge, just say "thanks". He deserves it. Thank you, Jay. On Sunday, a group of six Foxcroft Academy alumni lead by Kirsten White ’95, and Mike Keighley of the Summit Project hiked Borestone Mountain with stones engraved with the initials of fallen service members from across the state. Two stones were in honor of Jay. One picked out by his wife and the other by his uncle and aunt, Don and Nancy White. Alumni participating in the Sunday climb included; Jen Michaud Finch ’94, Kirsten White ’95, Kristin Stelmok ’95, Toby Nelson ’95, and Joe and Hillary Steinke Caruso ’96. It was a powerful experience and one that will not soon be forgotten. More photos from the climb are available on our Facebook page.

FA ATHLETES, WILL’S SHOP ’N SAVE, TEAM UP TO HELP OUR TEAMS Nothing says relaxing weekend like a cookout. Whatever you prefer on the grill, it just tastes better cooked outside. This fall, Foxcroft Academy student athletes and Will’s Shop ’n Save teamed up to feed the masses and help out FA athletic programs at the same time with an old fashioned cookout in the Will’s parking lot. Over a 6-hour span, FA student athletes, their coaches, and employees of Will’s Shop ’n Save cooked up and handed out over 500 hot dogs, bags of chips, sodas, and desserts. Thanks to the generosity of Will Wedge and the rest of his staff, all of the products were donated and in the end, $1470 was raised and turned over to our Sports Boosters Club. “Through tremendous efforts from local businesses like Will’s Shop ’n Save, our Sports Boosters and many other programs at Foxcroft Academy receive valuable funds used to help out our students,” said Arnold Shorey, FA Head of School. “Will has been an ardent supporter of Foxcroft Academy since he purchased the store and over those five years, he and his staff have helped raise more than $10,000 for FA Sports Boosters and Project Graduation. Without those funds, we could not offer many of the opportunities our students have. We can’t thank businesses like Will’s Shop ’n Save enough.” Many of our fall student athletes participated in the cookout. Our students are the ones that benefit from activities like this. Thanks, Will’s Shop ’n Save! With help and support from many of our local businesses, Foxcroft will continue to ride on!

FA TEAMS BUSY ON THE FIELDS AND COURSES

2016 FALL ATHLETICS REVIEW By: Emily Curtis ’18

Another fall season has come and gone. All our teams and athletes played hard, had great wins and tough losses. In the end, we are all proud to be Ponies! Field Hockey The field hockey team played and won 15 games, remaining undefeated throughout their regular season. Senior Alli Bourget was the leading scorer for the team, followed by freshman Cassidy Marsh. The team won their quarterfinal game against Hermon, but lost in the semifinals against Lawrence in double overtime. The girls, led by coaches Stephanie Smith and Morgan Rublee, put up a good fight against Lawrence. "FA Field Hockey had a great season, unbeaten during the regular season at 14-0,” said coach Stephanie Smith. “Our season was cut far too short with the tough loss to Lawrence in the semi-finals. We dominated the game in all aspects, but Lawrence scored in 2nd overtime. I really thought we had the goods to win it all. I truly believe to win a championship you need a little luck on your side. That was our only missing ingredient on Monday,” said Coach Smith.

FOXCROFT ACADEMY

Boys’ Soccer Boys’ Soccer finished their season with a 6-8-2 record, finishing in 12th place. The team played their first playoff game against Ellsworth, winning 2-1 after two overtimes and three rounds of penalty kicks. This was an impressive win considering the Ponies lost to the Eagles last year. Despite losing many seniors last fall, the team pulled together to make it to playoffs. "The guys worked really hard and never gave up," said team captain Josh Reed. FA lost to Presque Isle in the quarterfinals, 2-1. Girls’ Soccer Led by Coach Chris Wesley, the girls’ soccer team ended their regular season with four wins. The team started out playing tough teams with many away games, but pulled through and put up a good fight all season long. Although many were injured, including Captain Kendra Ewer, the team continued to play strong. “No matter what we always fight very hard,” said junior Jenna Clukey. Golf The Foxcroft Academy Golf Team, consisting of Akira Tanabe, Sam Libby, Ethan Curtis, Caleb Buerger, and Victoria Cyr, played a total of 11 matches in the regular season. They practiced at

Foxcroft Golf Club, playing three home matches. Coach Peter Caruso led the team to a total of six wins. Akira Tanabe qualified for the MPA Individual Championship. As only a freshman, Ethan Curtis joined the varsity team right away, led by Libby, Buerger, and Tanabe. Cross-Country Led by returning coach George Rolleston, the cross country team started the season with three veterans, and picked up 11 newcomers on the way. Coach Rolleston's objective was mainly to help the newcomers train to run long distances. "We focused on our runners improving their times and didn’t worry so much on the outcome of the meets,” said Rolleston. “It helped them get better throughout the year.” The runners (both boys and girls) all posted their best 5K times at the regional meet to end the season. Well done, Ponies! Fall Cheering FA Cheer competes at many different high schools throughout their season, but their one goal is to make it to States. At competition they are judged in five different categories: dance, spoken cheer, jumps, tumbling, and stunting. Seventeen different high school teams meet at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. They all compete and perform in front

of an audience and judges with the top scoring six high schools making it to the States. The FA Cheer team made it to 8th place. The team has been nonstop improving in the past couple years. "My freshman year we placed 15th, and then we slowly got better and better," said senior Jessica Moore. The team is including tumbling in their performance, so they hope to keep moving up! Football The FA football team had four wins during their regular season, and made it into the playoffs seeded #5 in Class C. They played Oceanside in the first round of the playoffs, losing 27-7. Foxcroft had the same number of regular season wins a year ago and just like last year, the injury bug really plagued the Ponies. Senior Billy Brock (leading rusher and tackler) was injured during their second to the last regular season game at Belfast but the Ponies kept fighting. The junior varsity football team also had a very successful season, only losing one game. The team was led by coaches White, Dankert, Miller, and Worthing. Like every FA team, they fight until the end. While the fall season has ended, our winter sports season will be gearing up at the time of publication. Our teams are ready to hit the courts, mats, tracks, and pools this winter. Watch out folks, the Ponies are coming!

AROUND THE ACADEMY NEASC ACCREDITATION TEAM VISITS Foxcroft Academy, along with other independent town academies in New England, is a member school of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Every ten years, these member schools go through a rigorous reaccreditation process to allow them license to educate our youth. It takes a number of years to do the required selfstudy and after that is complete, a visiting team from NEASC comes to see if the findings match what the report and others see. In simple terms, this is a quality assurance check. This year happened to be our year for reaccreditation and the process was completed in early October. A team of ten spent four days at Foxcroft Academy looking over our self-study from programs to facilities to faculty. There were 14 different standards that were combed over. In the end, Foxcroft Academy passed with flying colors and we are proud to say that we are reaccredited for the next ten years. We would like to thank the NEASC team for their time, energy, and efforts that they put into helping FA continue our path of excellence. Our administration, faculty, and staff put many hours into the self-study. The process has been eye opening and thought provoking. Improvements have been made as a result of the self-study and visiting teams findings. Here is to a job well done!

“The NEASC visiting team's perspective on our self-study and recommendations for school improvement will be a critical building block in our work over the next 10-year cycle to provide an ever-better experience of our mission for our students.” -Jon Pratt, Assistant Head of School for Academics

Trustee Tom Lizotte’s thoughts on Alumni Weekend. “Alumni Weekend is one of the highlights of the year for me, not only because it means my sons will be coming home to visit. The sense of pride in FA is palpable, on campus and throughout the wider community. There is little distinction between pride in FA and pride in our town - the two are so closely integrated that I cannot tell where one ends and the other begins.”

My family attended the Lawn Party for the first time and I must say it will be a “must do”. ALUMNI WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS

Tom Lyford ’64

Receives Tillson D. Thomas Award Tom Lyford was born in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine in 1946. He loves to remind people that was before there were such things as computers, calculators, cell phones, or ATM’s, all things he has become very fond of over the years. Tom is a real-deal baby boomer growing up in a town that molded his life. A 1964 graduate of the Academy, Tom went on to get his degree in education (English major, history minor) from Farmington State College (now UMaine Farmington), graduating in 1968. In 1966, he married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Raymond ’66. They have three children: Melissa, born in 1968; Kathryn in 1970; and Christopher in 1972, all three are graduates of FA. Over the next 34 years, Tom served as a high school English teacher. He spent one year in Belfast, ten years in Mexico, Maine where he was the English Department chair for six years and then the last 23 years of his teaching career back at Foxcroft Academy. In addition to all his teaching duties, Tom was the faculty advisor of the student newspaper, The Pony Express. He advised many other issue related service clubs such as F.A.D.D. (Foxcroft Against Drunk Driving), the annual Drug and Alcohol Awareness weeks, and the annual AIDS awareness program, which would display portions of the AIDS Quilt at FA. Tom developed a passion for computer programming in the late 80’s and helped develop the first computer curriculum at FA. He often found himself teaching computers to his students during the day and SAD 68’s faculty at night.

But overall, his biggest extra-curricular passion was for dramatics. Tom and FA drama went hand in hand over the next decade plus. His first one-act play was titled Once Upon a Playground. Tom readily admits, somehow it survived and then he was hooked. All in all, Tom ended up directing or co-directing over 50 plays at FA including full length plays, one-act plays, and musicals. Many of them would go on to win awards across the state. Tom says he was truly blessed with incredible and reliable student thespians who never failed to amaze. Tom retired in 2001, but was coaxed out for one year of doing something he loved; one more year of teaching kids. Since retirement, the Dover-Foxcroft native has continued his passion for everything English. He is employed as a library clerk at Thompson Free Library. His hobbies have included directing, as well as acting in plays; Tom appeared in an independent film; loves amateur radio, photography, motorcycling, computer programming, playing the guitar, sharing his poetry, storytelling, and even performing stand-up comedy. At the end of the day, so much of Tom’s work revolves around his love for his town, his school, and his wife. Some 50 years later, Tom still bleeds FA maroon and white.

Dean Smith ’86 Receives Dr. Mary Chandler-Lowell Award Dean starred in football, basketball, and baseball at Foxcroft Academy. He was a member of the 1983 State Champion football team and is the school’s all-time leading scorer in basketball. Dean was the second Pony to be named to the Bangor Daily News All-State first team, and he was All-LTC in football and All-Penquis League in basketball and baseball. Dean went on to an outstanding basketball career at the University of Maine, where he also became a 1,000-point scorer. He was a member of our first Athletic Hall of Fame class in 2011 and is a member of the Academic Hall of Fame as well. In addition to his many great athletic accomplishments, Dean was tenacious in the classroom. He was valedictorian, a first place finisher in chemistry at the State Science Fair, a participant in Dirigo Boys State, and a member of the UMaine Pulp and Paper program.

Dean was a three-time Academic All-American at UMaine--where he graduated with a 3.89 GPA--and was a recipient of the NCAA’s Walter Byers Award, given in recognition of the top male student-athlete, not just in Maine, but in the nation. In recognition of that great honor, the University changed the name of their top scholarship. The “Dean Smith Graduate M-Club Scholarship” is now given each year to the top-ranking male and female student-athlete at UMaine. Dean worked as an electrical engineer at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI from 1991-1998. He was the Director of Systems Engineering at the Sensor Research and Development Corporation in Orono from 1998-2005, and was a technology transfer specialist at the UMaine Laboratory for Surface Science and Technology from 20052007. Since 2007, he has been the owner and Vice President for Engineering at Orono Spectral Solutions. His engineering responsibilities include management, coordination, research, development, and commercialization of detection technologies for chemical and biological sensing for the Department of Defense, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Homeland Security, and commercial applications. Just recently, his company was the recipient of the prestigious Stephen R. Wilson Safety Award from CF Industries for their patented Clear Shot Technology. Dean continues to give back to FA as an assistant basketball coach and continues to watch the development of his sons Hunter and Hyatt here at Foxcroft Academy and beyond.

CLASS REUNIONS TWO EVENTS BRING THE 50TH CLASS OF 1966 TOGETHER by: Marie Heath Weatherbee and Cherie Stitham White ’65

Beating out a rainstorm on the night of August 4th, members of the class enjoyed an evening at Loon Lane on Sebec Lake at the Stitham camp. They were pleased to be joined by Head of School Arnold Shorey and his wife Stacy, who arrived by jet ski. Special guests attending were Mark Stitham and Mike Taylor of the Class of 1968. Special thanks go to Ellen and Bob Annis and Fred and Sue Mackey-Andrews who helped provide refreshments. The next day dawned bright and clear for the fiftieth reunion of Pictured here with Mr. the class of 1966. Twenty-five class members and several guests Shorey are Bob Annis, gathered for an afternoon of fun and fellowship. We revisited our Class President, Bob class choices of “Best Dressed,” “Class Clown,” “ Most Talkative,” White, V.P., Sheila Ames Robertson, Secretary, and etc. My how times have changed! It was fun to see our old friends and reminisce. I believe that thirty classmates managed to attend at the class advisor Susan least one of the four events offered. My daughter, Beth, has invited Stitham ’61 us back to the farm for “tea and crumpets” on her “new” deck which should be finished for our 55th or 60th. So live, laugh, love, and stay healthy and plan to join us for the next gathering. We’d love to see you all down on the farm.

The Class of 1996 had a wonderful 20th reunion. Class members and families gathered at Joe and Hillary Steinke Caruso’s camp on Sebec Lake on Saturday afternoon. Although thunder storms threatened early on, the clouds cleared and the adults had a wonderful time visiting, while the kids swam and played. Grandparents and babysitters were called in on Saturday evening, as classmates gathered in the Spaulding Room at Pat’s Pizza. In all, 32 classmates were able to make it to one or both of the gatherings. We were pleased with the good turnout, but are looking forward to seeing even more faces in five years at our 25th! HALL OF FAME FA Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016 Karen Blodgett Baker ’68 Karen grew up in the time before Title IX (nine) and before many sports were offered in which girls could participate. Karen made the most of what was offered at the time. She was a standout twosport athlete in basketball and softball, the only two interscholastic sports available for girls at the time. Her 1966-67 basketball team, coached by fellow FA Hall of Famer Susan Stitham ’61, finished the season undefeated at 16-0. There were no MPA regional or state tournaments at the time for girls. They were Penquis League Champions, something Karen and the whole team were very proud of accomplishing. During the season, Karen scored 50 points in a game against PCHS. At that time, her total tied a state record. In softball, she was a standout at the plate and in the field, playing second base and pitching. She was an overall great athlete. Her basketball and softball coach Susan Stitham has said that if girls sports were covered in that day like they are now, the last name Blodgett would have first been known for Karen, and not Cindy at Lawrence High School some 25 years later. Karen fondly remembers her time at FA and was proud to be on a championship team.

David Ingraham ’75 David was a three-sport athlete competing as the quarterback on the football team, point guard on the basketball team, and third baseman for the Pony baseball team. He was a member of the All Penquis League team in baseball and he was on the LTC All Conference team as a quarterback in football. His overall records on the field were good, but the numbers on his basketball team are things that hometown legends are made of. In 1974-75, David was a main cog in the Ponies’ basketball wheel that brought home gold. Using his “quarterback” mind, David was the point guard and main defender for Coach Skip Hanson. He averaged about five points per game his senior season, but where he was needed was as a ball handler and defender. That is where he thrived. With his help, Foxcroft avenged a loss a year earlier to Orono in the Eastern Maine finals and a week later, went on to win the 1975 State Championship in Augusta. It’s still the lone basketball gold ball in the trophy case. David credits his coaches, Skip Hanson and Dennis Kiah as teachers who helped mold him during his high school years.

JD Merrill ’86 JD was a standout in every sport in which he was involved; football, basketball, and baseball. During his sophomore season, the Pony football team won the Class D State Championship after finishing runnerup his freshman year. Over his four years on the gridiron, JD became an All-Conference Tight End and Defensive End, helping the Ponies to many victories. His baseball team won the Penquis League Championship during his senior year where he was the team’s MVP. During his junior year, he led the team with a .444 batting average and led the team in almost all offensive categories. His basketball success came as he helped the Ponies to the playoffs during his junior and senior seasons, making it the Class C semifinals. He was a County All-Star on several occasions, voted Most Improved Player his sophomore season, and won the team Spirit Award his senior year. After his days at FA, JD went on to play basketball and rugby at Colby College in Waterville. He credits Gary Worthing, Ken Grant, Carl Parker, Dave Clement, and Roger Davis as faculty and staff members influential on his time at FA and beyond.

HALL OF FAME

FA Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2016 Tracy London Cushman ’92

Tracy was a star three-sport athlete during her four years at FA. On the basketball court, she was captain of her team during her senior year and voted the team's MVP. In softball, she was captain during her junior and senior seasons as well as the Offensive Player of the Year. But Tracy was a real standout on the field hockey field. As a junior, her team went all the way to the Eastern Maine Championship game. As a senior, not only did they take home Eastern Maine gold, but won the State Championship, 1-0 over Telstar. Tracy scored the only goal of the game. It was the first ever State Championship for FA and longtime Head Coach Gene Philpot. Tracy was selected to the Class C All-State Field Hockey team that season. Tracy may have become an even better overall athlete when her playing days at FA came to an end. She competed in several marathons, canoe races (with her husband, Kenny, a world class kayaker), and in golf. Earlier this year, she broke 80 on her home course. Tracy said her coach and teacher, Gene Philpot, was highly influential on her in school and beyond. “Coach Philpot not only taught me how to win with dignity and respect, but how to be gracious in defeat. These are life lessons that I learned at a young age thanks to Coach Philpot.”

Jennifer Michaud Finch ’94 While at FA, Jennifer was captain of the field hockey, basketball, indoor, and outdoor track teams during her 4-year run. She experienced her most success on the field hockey field and on the track, both indoors and out. From team state championships (in both field hockey and track), individual titles and honors, state records at the time, and a fall or two on the old cinder track (she has the scars to prove it), both of these sports prepared Jennifer for the life ahead. After her time at FA, she went on to not just play, but excel in field hockey, cross country, and track at Springfield College. During graduate school at Northeastern, she coached the cross country teams. Running has always been a big part of Jennifer’s life as she has run over a dozen marathons, and still competes in many half marathons and 5K’s. She has focused her love of sports in her career as a sports cardiologist, currently in Massachusetts. Jen credits her coaches: Gene Philpot, Gary Worthing, and George Rolleston, as well as her parents and family as huge supporters of her over the years of competition. Jen was also inducted into the FA Academic Hall of Fame last year.

Vanessa Lougee ’10 Vanessa was involved in every sports season during her time at FA. During the fall, she played soccer and was voted to the PVC second team her senior season. She played softball and won the Coaches Award twice. Vanessa was most known for her time gracing the basketball court. She is one of only two female players at Foxcroft to have scored over 1,000 points. She was voted to the Big East Conference First Team her junior and senior seasons. She was a 2010 McDonald's All-Star and was named the Ernest “Lap” Lary Award winner her senior year, signifying the top female athlete. Her team made it to the Class C semifinals her senior season. After school, Vanessa went on to Washington County Community College where she won the President’s Award for Excellence in Heavy Equipment Maintenance and was the WCCC Student of the Year in 2011. Vanessa credits FA faculty members Wayne Strout, John Sylvester, Doreen Emerson, and Jen Bickford as having big impacts on her school career and her life beyond FA.

But prioritization on deadlines became a hassle when tasks accumulated and deadlines changed or canceled. So I created a basic app to prioritize my upcoming deadlines to not forget them. After a few iterations of updates, PriorityClouds is now a breeze to use, storing notes and digital bookmarks so users can access them anywhere in the world.” Although PriorityClouds.com is a relatively small project, he hopes to produce more influential projects in the next three years.

MICHELLE EMILY BUCK ROOM Life is precious. For a family living after an untimely death, life has a hard time returning to normalcy. Dr. Alfred S. Buck is living proof. On December 17th, 2015, in Pennsylvania, Dr. Buck’s 19-year-old granddaughter, Michelle, was struck in a crosswalk by a vehicle and died as a result of the accident. Michelle was a sophomore at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA. Growing up, she was a strong student who loved to travel and loved being in the outdoors. In wanting to honor the life of Michelle, Dr. Buck and his family decided that her legacy must live on: a legacy based on the love of learning and doing, one that can help other people and with that, help the family to live life again. On Friday, August 5th, as part of Foxcroft Academy’s Alumni Weekend, the FA Board of Trustees held a dedication and ribbon cutting of a new classroom in the Mary Kammerer Fittig Humanities Wing to the memory of Michelle Emily Buck. “We believe in the love of learning, just like Michelle did,” said Arnold Shorey, FA Head of School. “Even though Michelle did not graduate from Foxcroft, her family’s legacy to FA is as strong an any graduates we have had. FA would be proud of any of our students who would follow Michelle’s dedication to and the love of learning.” The Buck name is synonymous with Foxcroft Academy as the Buck House (named after Dr. Buck’s Aunt Anna) in Dover-Foxcroft was the Head of School’s residence for many years. It is still owned and maintained by Foxcroft Academy to this day. Dr. Buck and his son Alfred E. Buck were in attendance along with several family members. Speakers included; Dr. and Mr. Buck, Arnold Shorey, FA Head of School, Dr. Richard Swett, President of the FA Board of Trustees, and Rev. Chad Poland ’91, Pastor of the Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church. The Fittig Humanities Wing was dedicated last year during alumni festivities. “Loved by all who knew her. She blessed us with her intellect, artistry, and goodness,” the Buck Family.

ANNUAL DONOR REPORT Dear Alumni and Friends,

My first year as President of the Board has been a very fulfilling and enjoyable one, working with an outstanding group of board members. As well as devotion to Foxcroft Academy, our board brings strong backgrounds in education, government, business, finance, law and healthcare. We have been working with the administration on issues that will maintain the present excellence of FA, and also considering options for the future that would provide our students with even better opportunities to succeed. This fall we had a successful accreditation process through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, passing with flying colors. Our steadily increasing enrollment has risen to 467 students this year. A number of these students come with their families who have chosen to move to the area because of FA’s reputation for providing a great educational experience. I am pleased to report that the 2015-16 Annual Fund surpassed our goal, raising just over $107,000 to assist in making our educational programming the best it can be. Total donations amounted to just over $300,000, including gifts to the Fittig Humanities Wing and Gary D. Wakeland Memorial Pole Vault Pit. Support of this kind says a lot about the generosity of our alumni and friends and their backing of FA’s vision for the future. My wife Caroline and I have chosen to join the Legacy Circle, whose members have opted to leave a bequest or planned gift to the Academy. During Alumni Weekend 2016, we welcomed four new members to the Circle, three under the age of 40 and I would like to very much encourage you to make FA part of your legacy as well. On behalf of the Board, I offer my sincerest thanks for your continued support and interest in Foxcroft Academy. Richard Swett, MD President, Board of Trustees

LEGACY CIRCLE The Foxcroft Legacy Circle - Make a Difference Many of us feel the compelling need to make a difference–to leave a lasting impact on the people most dear to us and the town in which we grew up. Our search for significance and the desire to plan for the future leads many of us to consider our legacy. A bequest is perhaps the easiest and most tangible way to have a lasting impact on people and organizations like Foxcroft Academy that mean the most to us. Bequests through a trust, will, retirement account, or life insurance policy are increasingly popular because they cost nothing now, no amount is too small, and beneficiaries can be changed at any time. Legacy gifts allow the Academy to remain financially strong for years to come, and each gift makes a profound and lasting difference for the school and students. The Foxcroft Legacy Circle recognizes all who have made a bequest in the following forms:

• • • • • •

Outright Bequest Charitable Gift Annuity Charitable Lead Trust Charitable Remainder Trust Real Estate Bequest Life insurance or retirement income designation

As an independent school, the Academy is not eligible for any state capital construction funds; therefore, our endowed funds play a critical role in our future.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST Individuals wishing to retain either for themselves or another, an income interest in their gift to Foxcroft Academy may consider establishing a charitable remainder trust, which could provide a stream of payments for life or a set term of years to a designated beneficiary(ies). There are two basic types of charitable remainder trusts: the charitable remainder unitrust which pays a fixed percentage of the value of the trust as revalued annually, and the charitable remainder annuity trust which pays a set dollar amount annually. The payout from the unitrust will vary from year to year; the payout from the annuity trust remains constant. All payments, whether from a unitrust or an annuity trust, are made solely from the assets of the trust. In general, to establish a charitable remainder trust with the Academy, the Board of Trustees requires a minimum gift of $50,000. With a unitrust, money or property is irrevocably transferred to the Academy, with instructions to make payments to one or more individuals annually, either for life or a term of years. The payments will be a fixed percentage of the trust’s value, as revalued annually, varying the amount of payments from year to year. Additional gifts may be made to the unitrust. Generally, the higher the payout set by the donor, the lower the tax deduction will be. On the death of the beneficiary(ies) or upon the expiration of the term, the remaining trust assets will pass to Foxcroft Academy to be used for the purpose originally designated by the donor. An annuity trust, like a unitrust, is separately invested. Unlike a unitrust however, it pays out a fixed payment, as opposed to a variable payment. It is valued only once when the trust is initially established, and a certain percentage of this amount (to be determined) is distributed annually to a named individual or individuals for life or a term of years. Additional gifts cannot be made to an annuity trust. By designating the Trustees of Foxcroft Academy as the remainder beneficiary of these giving instruments, you will receive a charitable tax deduction, and in addition, can save on estate tax and probate costs.

GIVING BACK CORNERSTONE SOCIETY We have a very special and deeply dedicated group of donors who support our school and play an integral part of what makes Foxcroft Academy such a great institution. To honor their loyalty and generosity, we have created the Cornerstone Society. This a group who have chosen to include Foxcroft Academy at the heart of their giving whether they are a member of the Founders’ Society, the Legacy Circle, or a donor who has for ten years consecutively given a gift in support of the Annual Fund. We believe that this group is the cornerstone of what builds the foundation that helps Foxcroft inspire lifelong learning in our students.

SPECIAL GIFTS The “Hope” Fund Horseshoe Tournament In the Fall 2015 issue of the Foxcroft, we wrote of the creation of the Hope Fund, initially begun by Hope Austin Lacouciere ’46 in November 2009. The Hope Fund is dedicated to ensuring that music students interested in the strings program can receive lessons at no cost. Upon the first anniversary of Hope’s death, her family decided to continue a yearly family tradition by holding a horseshoe tournament. It will be held each year around Hope’s birthday, June 15, and the event will be hosted each year in a different location by one of her seven children. Family members will “pay to play” with the proceeds being sent to the Hope Fund here at Foxcroft Academy. This year, over $1400 was added to the fund through the generosity of Hope’s family. Thank you to participants in the tournament as well as other donors who have chosen to remember Hope in this way.

Pictured here are two of Hope’s sons: Jay and Rick Pinkerton
